  • Steven Spielberg Hints Next Indiana Jones Could Be a Woman

2008 Cannes Film Festival - 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' PhotocallIf the “Ghostbusters” can be women and the new Jedi hero of “Star Wars” a woman, so could Indiana Jones. Steven Spielberg certainly thinks so.

The director recently revealed he plans to start shooting “Indiana Jones 5” next year in England. Harrison Ford is set to reprise his role, but as Spielberg told The Sun, “This will be Harrison Ford’s last Indiana Jones movie, I am pretty sure, but it will certainly continue after that.”

And when the blockbuster franchise does continue, he believes the character should take “a different form” — the form of a woman.

“We’d have to change the name from Jones to Joan. And there would be nothing wrong with that,” Spielberg said.

(Sure, though, Steve, Jones is the character’s last name. A woman’s first name could still be Indiana.)

While story details on “Indiana Jones 5” are non-existent, fans have speculated the movie could introduce a younger protege of Ford’s character, like 2008’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” attempted to do with Shia LaBeouf playing Indy’s son, Mutt. Well, that was a big fail, so why not make version 2.0 a woman?

  • Steven Spielberg Reveals When and Where ‘Indiana Jones 5’ Filming Begins

38th AFI Life Achievement Award Honoring Mike Nichols - Show“Indiana Jones 5” finally has a start date.

Steven Spielberg is one of Hollywood’s most prolific filmmakers. The sequel has long been on his plate, but last year, he decided to make “The Post” instead. And he was still in post-production on “Ready Player One,” the sci-fi adventure that hits theaters March 29.

But now that those projects are done, Spielberg can finally move on to “Indiana Jones 5.” Last night, at the Rakuten TV Empire Awards, the director revealed the production’s start date and location.

“It’s always worth the trip when I get to work with this deep bench of talent coming out of the UK,” he said while accepting a lifetime achievement award.

“The actors, and the crew, the chippies, the sparks, the drivers — everybody who has helped me make my movies here, and will continue helping me make my movies here when I come back in April 2019 to make the fifth Indiana Jones movie right here.”

This would be the first “Indiana Jones” movie shot entirely in the U.K.

Star Harrison Ford will be back to wear the fedora as Indy, but little else is known about the movie, which is slated for release July 10, 2020.

  • Shia LaBeouf Will Not Be in ‘Indiana Jones 5’ After All

Premiere Of Lionsgate Premiere's 'Man Down' - ArrivalsShia LaBeouf is sitting out the next Indiana Jones adventure.

The actor, who starred in the long-running franchise’s fourth movie, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” is no longer set to reprise his role as Indiana Jones’s son, Henry “Mutt Williams” Jones III. LaBeouf was expected to return for “Indiana Jones 5,” but screenwriter David Koepp has revealed to EW that the actor is “not in the film.”

We don’t know the reason behind the decision, but the news isn’t entirely shocking. LaBeouf caused a stir in 2010 when he made negative comments about 2008’s “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” in a Los Angeles Times interview. Although he only blamed himself for not having been able to “make it come alive and make it work,” Harrison Ford didn’t appreciate his co-star’s lack of support for the film. (And that’s putting it mildly — Ford called LaBeouf a “f–king idiot” in a 2011 Details interview.)

Now that LaBeouf is out, there is room for Jones to have a new protege, but it remains to be seen what will happen. All we know so far is that Ford is returning as the titular “Indiana Jones 5” character. Koepp was vague when teasing the plot, simply revealing that Jones will be on the hunt for a precious artifact.

At this point, the screenwriter has finished a draft of the script that he says they’re “mostly happy with,” and he believes that production could start soon. Scheduling is difficult, though; Ford and director Steven Spielberg remain in high demand.

Let’s hope they can fit in another whip-cracking adventure soon.

  • Steven Spielberg Promises Harrison Ford Doesn’t Die in ‘Indiana Jones 5’

38th AFI Life Achievement Award Honoring Mike Nichols - ShowEarlier this year, Disney made the surprising announcement that another entry in the “Indiana Jones” franchise would be hitting theaters in 2019. While we still have almost zero details about the flick, other than that it will star Harrison Ford and be helmed by Steven Spielberg, the director has confirmed at least one plot point for fans.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg discussed some of his past and upcoming projects, including “Indy 5.” While he didn’t say much about the film, the director teased that he was “super excited” to return to the franchise, and that the flick is meant to be “straight down the pike for the fans.”

And what could me more fan service-y than assuring moviegoers that Jones will live to wield his whip another day?

“The one thing I will tell you is I’m not killing off Harrison [Ford] at the end of it,” Spielberg told THR.

While that hint doesn’t exactly reveal anything about the movie’s plot, it does leave open the window of possibility that the “Indiana Jones” franchise could live on past this fifth installment. It had been widely assumed that “Indiana Jones 5” will be Ford’s (and Spielberg’s) last outing in the series, since the star will be 77 by the time it hits theaters. But if anyone could still believably be setting out on wild adventures as a septuagenarian, it’s Ford-as-Indy.

“Indiana Jones 5” is being scripted by longtime Spielberg collaborator (and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” screenwriter) David Koepp. It’s slated for release on July 19, 2019.
