After a celebrated career performing stunts, Yakima Canutt became a stunt coordinator, orchestrating the lengthy chariot race in this film, still one of the most exciting action sequences ever made. Most of the time, stars Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd are the ones seen holding the reins, but in one jaw-dropping moment, Canutt’s son, Joe, doubling for Heston, who gets thrown over the front of the chariot but manages to climb back in.
