  • The Early ‘Batman v Superman’ Reviews Are Discouraging, and Unfair?

Why so serious? That seems to be a major complaint from critics who just saw “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” before its March 25 wide release. But, hey, at least they liked Wonder Woman!

The long-awaited showdown between Ben Affleck‘s Batman and Henry Cavill‘s Superman has not been embraced by many critics, so far. As of Wednesday morning (March 23) it has only a 40 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, only 62 reviews have been posted at this point, so there’s time for a comeback.

Most of the reviews are mixed, whether labeled fresh or rotten. The length and somber tone were singled out in several critiques, as if every superhero movie now needs to be a non-stop one-liner comedy showcase like “Avengers,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Deadpool.” You can find comparisons to Marvel movies in a few critiques, which seems a bit unfair — we don’t need DC to copy Marvel’s formula, they are setting up their own game.
And even though Ben Affleck seems to be accepted as the new Batman, the strongest praise was for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, who isn’t on screen that much this time. Jesse Eisenberg‘s Lex Luthor was more polarizing, earning praise and blame, depending on the critic.

Here’s a selection of sometimes conflicting critiques, to give you an idea of the credits and complaints:

“Overlong, underdeveloped and almost entirely humorless, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice may please die-hard fans by pitting two DC icons against each other. Everyone else may want to wait for the next Marvel movie.”
    Newsday

“A near-total drag, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice plays like a loose, unofficial quarter-billion-dollar remake of The Odd Couple, in which Oscar and Felix are literally trying to kill each other.”
    Chicago Tribune

“Constantly threatening to collapse from self-seriousness, this epic has way too much of everything, including CGI and Oscar winners up the wazoo.”
    New York Post

“Gorging on bombast and self-importance, swamped by its own mythology, Batman v Superman is loud, sprawling, and distracted. The action jumps around almost as fast as a man can fly, but nowhere near as smoothly.”
    Screen Daily

“When the head-to-head heavy hitting finally transpires — be patient, for it takes some time to get there — Dawn of Justice delivers the shock and awe on a level befitting a superhero blockbuster of such massive scale.”
    Herald Sun

“There are moments that make the whole enterprise worthwhile, and introduces an intriguing new Batman. But it’s also cluttered and narratively wonky; a few jokes wouldn’t have gone amiss, either.”
    Empire Online

“BvS will please those either waiting for the two main players to lock horns on a movie screen, or those who’ve just been pining for Wonder Woman forever.”
    USA Today

“It’s overstuffed, confusing, and seriously crippled by Eisenberg’s over-the-top performance. As the megalomaniac tech mogul hell-bent on bringing our heroes to their knees, the actor is a grating cartoon of manic motormouth tics. […] Dawn of Justice starts off as an intriguing meditation about two superheroes turning to an all-too-human emotion: hatred out of fear of the unknown. Two and a half hours later it winds up somewhere very far from that—but at the same time, all too familiar. It’s another numbing smash-and-bash orgy of CGI mayhem with an ending that leaves the door open wide enough to justify the next 10 installments. Is it too late to demand a rematch? C+”
    Entertainment Weekly

“In a picture that’s constantly in danger of being ground down by its own gloom, the brittle lightness of Eisenberg’s high-strung savant is a relief. His sentences unspool like wiry puzzles; in need of Ritalin, he speaks in riddles. The stunning and aristocratic Gal Gadot shows up, all too briefly, as Diana Prince/Wonderwoman: It’s a delight to watch her laugh in the face of danger, which is exactly the opposite of the demands placed on poor Cavill and Affleck.”
    Time

“All the Internet resistance to Affleck being cast as Batman seems silly when you see him sharing the screen with Cavill, as Affleck is easily the superior actor. (Cavill is solid, but there’s not all that much difference in his facial expressions registering anger, fear, pain or love. He winces quite a bit.) There’s not a moment when we don’t believe Affleck as Bruce Wayne or as Batman. Amy Adams’ Lois Lane is a modern, self-sufficient, strong woman — but she still needs rescuing from Superman every other week. Jesse Eisenberg’s twitchy, self-conscious mannerisms can be irritating in some performances, but he’s a creepy delight here as Lex Luthor.”
    Chicago Sun-Times

“The silver lining in the depressing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice turns out to be that we can still look forward to 2017’s Wonder Woman with something approaching a sense of hope. We’re calling it better than nothing.”
    Digital Spy

And here’s a “Super Reviewer” critique from a fan:

*sigh* I wanted to like this movie. Honestly, I did. I enjoyed Man of Steel, and I didn’t hate this one – it has its moments – but I found myself disappointed and actually bored for the vast majority of it. The cast is all fine, with the exception of Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. When I heard he was cast, I was very optimistic. I figured he would play it as a combination of his Mark Zuckerberg and his character from Now You See Me – somewhat of a sociopath and always the smartest guy in the room. But no, he played it very… weird, and almost cartoony.
    Martin Bishop

But there is good news for DC/Warner Bros. A full 98 percent of users (more than 117,000) voted that they want to see “BvS,” which bodes well for the box office. That may be all that matters with this film, since they need momentum going into “Suicide Squad,” which should have the humor that some critics felt was missing in “BvS.” And this does seem to tease out Wonder Woman nicely, and her solo film arrives in 2017, after “Suicide Squad.”

So as long as fans watch this movie and stick around for the next segments, the DC Extended Universe should be OK. But hopefully fans who watch “BvS” this weekend see it as the movie they needed and deserved.

  • Henry Cavill Admits Making Movies for Money, Calls Out Disrespectful Fans

US-OSCARS-ARRIVALSBreaking news: Superman isn’t always in it “for the craft.” Henry Cavill is in promotion mode for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and he shared some interesting details in a couple of new interviews.

He’s on the new cover of Man of the World, and here’s his stand on the “fantastic” money you can make as an actor (via JustJared):

“I’m slightly wary of saying this, because it can be frowned upon, certainly by members of my community and people outside my community…but I’m not just doing this for the art. The money’s fantastic and that’s something which I deem—and again, it is frowned upon—very important. […]

You’ve got to enjoy life! I mean, you’ve got to! When I’m making money I’m spending it on nice stuff, whether that be lavish holidays for me and my friends or just seeing something and going in a shop and saying, ‘Yeah, I want that for the house,’ and buying it. […]

People will be calling me a cock as they’re reading this, but travel’s great as long as you’re going first class. I mean, traveling to New Zealand in economy, it sucks. Especially if you’re over six feet. But first class? I’m not going to ever pretend to be coy about that. I love it.”

Well, did you call him a “cock” as you read that? Some fans think it’s refreshingly honest for him to admit he’s in it (at least in part) for the money, since he’s probably not alone in that boat. But other fans wish he would close his mouth before he starts to sound like a superficial supervillain.

He struck a slightly different tone with the Sunday Times (via People), taking a page from Charlie Hunnam, who recently wrote an open letter to “the ladies of social media” who were cyberbullying his girlfriend. Apparently this is an epidemic for hot male celebrities. Here’s his request for civility on the streets:

Cavill on the “double standard” for genders when it comes to flirtation: “I mean, if a girl shouts something like, ‘Oi, love, fancy a shag?’ to me as I walk past, I do sometimes wonder how she’d feel if a builder said that to her. Although, of course, I wouldn’t feel physically threatened, as she might.”

On fans who approach him, sometimes in front of his girlfriend, Tara King: “I’ve heard some things in my time, I have to say. I’d best not say what. I don’t mind it – not unless I’m with my girlfriend and someone is being complimentary to me in order to disrespect her. People who don’t respect other people’s feelings really get my goat.”

Don’t get Superman’s goat! It is pretty disrespectful to shout “Oi, love, fancy a shag?” at anyone, so maybe call out, “Hi, Henry” or something, if you feel compelled to shout at all. Or maybe just yell, “Congrats on all that ‘fantastic’ money!”

  • Poor Jimmy Kimmel Was Cut From ‘Batman v Superman,’ See His Genius Bonus Scene

The best thing about this “Jimmy Kimmel Live” video isn’t even the “deleted scene” from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” although that is hilarious and includes cameos from “The Lego Movie” Batman Will Arnett and Kimmel’s resident nemesis, Matt Damon.

No, the real treat is the build-up, with Jimmy Kimmel looking near tears as guest Ben Affleck gently breaks the news that his “too awesome” scene was cut from the final film. It’s played to perfection. But Kimmel brightens when Affleck reveals that he brought the bonus scene to show the JKL audience. “Oh, this is good,” Kimmel says, “More people will see this than that stupid movie!”

So here’s the clip, with Affleck, Henry Cavill, and Jesse Eisenberg shooting a new fake version of their trailer scene, this time adding Kimmel. Bless them for that. And it is kind of strange that no one just outs Superman and Batman like this, when it does seem pretty obvious who they are.

The video is 9 minutes long, but stay for all of it for Will Arnett’s Lego Batman cameo and, of course, Matt Damon on Mars.

  • Super Meh? Watch Henry Cavill Get Rejected by Little Girls Who Prefer Batman

JAPAN-US-ENTERTAINMENT-FILM-SUPERMANChicks love the car, man. Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck will soon face off (and then inevitably team up) in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” But first, as part of an Omaze charity video, the British Man of Steel himself sat down with a bunch of kids to try and win them over to Team Superman.

Let’s just say Cavill does not have a future in lobbying.

He put his back into selling Superman, but not only did both of the little girls in the video stay strong with Team Batman, one of the little boys openly admitted, “I kind of like the villains.” (Keep an eye on that kid, he’s hilarious … and sorta scary.)

Here’s the video, stay till the very end for an adorable coda:

It’s *possible* those girls just need to wait maybe 10 years, and then someone can show them Cavill’s recent Instagram post and they’ll change teams. So just go for the long game, Supe.

If you’d like a chance to console Cavill in person, head to Omaze’s site to enter the contest to hang out with Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Jesse Eisenberg at the premiere of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The movie opens March 25.

  • ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Final Trailer Kicks Major Ass

batman v superman, dawn of justice, trailer, final trailer, wonder womanThe final trailer for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” puts the spotlight on the Caped Crusader, as he starts things off by taking down a bunch of bad guys in a single bound — though really, it’s Clark Kent’s alter ego who’s in his sights.

The clip bends over backwards to prove Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is a powerful vigilante, while also explaining why he’s so immediately threatened by Superman’s (Henry Cavill) arrival.

“He has the power to wipe out the entire human race,” Wayne reasons. “If we believe there’s even a one percent chance that he is our enemy, we have to take it as an absolute certainty.”

That latter bit paints Wayne as more of a paranoid politician-type than a man truly looking out for his planet’s best interests, though it does an effective job of establishing his motivation to start the titular battle with the Man of Steel. Or as Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) puts it, it’s really a case of “God vs. Man” or “Day vs. Night.”

Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) certainly seems intrigued by the latter half of that equation, though she coolly smirks and dismisses Wayne when they first meet.

“I don’t think you’ve ever known a woman like me,” she tells the billionaire, in the first words audiences have heard her speak so far. That exchange is followed by some footage of the heroine springing into action, a tease of the kickass girl power to come. We’re already rooting for her.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is due in theaters on March 25.

  • Henry Cavill Posts Shirtless ‘Superman Training’ Photo, Internet Faints

Henry Cavill Visits "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon"Move over, Zoolander, there’s a new male model stealing the Internet’s attention this week. Henry Cavill — aka the “Man of Steel” and co-star of the upcoming “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” — only joined Instagram a few months ago and he just shared his first shirtless photo. In a classic humblebrag, Cavill used the shot to announce the “Warm up phase for Superman training,” saying the photo would be his inspiration for a “minimum goal.”

    Here it is:

Please. That’s the minimum goal? Fans may not survive if he hits the maximum, whatever that might be. Let’s just say Joe Manganiello and Alexander Skarsgard may have more competition than they thought.

You would expect Superman to look, you know, super, but the best part is the reaction of drooling fans on Instagram and beyond. Here are just a few comments from Us Weekly readers:

    • I’d climb that like a tree.

    • Well, GOOD MORNING TO ME!

    • *clutches pearls* oh my!

    I just fainted

    • I love the comment that said her wedding ring blew off when seeing the picture 😆

Isn’t it fun when we can bond over our shallowness? Anyone not interested in the male form may not be having much fun, but they have plenty of other photos on Instagram to enjoy. Besides, maybe they too will be inspired by Superman’s super-bod.

  • New ‘Batman v Superman’ TV Spots, Poster, and Cameo Revealed

Who will win? That’s the tagline on the new “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” poster, and it’s leading some fans to offer suggestions like “Alfred” or “Neither.” Fans get to win when the movie is finally released on March 25, and we start the DC train that keeps rolling with “Suicide Squad,” “Justice League,” etc.

The DC world is in full promotion mode, releasing a new “Batman v Superman” poster and two new TV spots. Also, “The Walking Dead” star Lauren Cohan (Maggie) will have a brief cameo in the movie as Martha Wayne, mother of Ben Affleck‘s Bruce Wayne — although we have to assume she’ll play the mother of a younger Bruce in flashback.

    Here’s the new face-off poster:

As for TV spots, one focuses on Bruce Wayne and the other highlights Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent, and both clips show the guys talking crap about each other behind their backs. (Superheroes, they’re just like us — in middle school!)

Here’s Bruce Wayne getting wicked intense with Alfred (Jeremy Irons) about the mysterious newcomers in town. (“She’s the one that brought the war to us,” “I’m going to have to destroy him.”)

And here’s Clark Kent getting shot down by Perry White (Laurence Fishburne) at the Daily Planet, when Kent wants to take on the “this Bat vigilante.” But then he seems to go vigilante himself as Superman to tell Batman, “the Bat is dead. Bury it.”

Can’t we all just get along? It seems inevitable that they will get along eventually, we just have to see how it plays out when the movie arrives March 25.

  • ‘Batman v Superman’ TV Teaser Unmasks Dark Knight

Batman v SupermanSuperman, meet Batman — or, as only a few know, Bruce Wayne.

A new teaser for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” aired during last night’s episode of “Gotham,” and it showed some tantalizing footage. Batman (Ben Affleck) finds himself chained up with some other rogues — and his captor is none other than Superman (Henry Cavill).

An angry Superman rips the mask off the equally pissed-off Batman, revealing his identity as Bruce Wayne.

Aside from the question of how Batman got caught, we’re intrigued by the soldiers who kneel down to Superman. What’s that about? The official synopsis doesn’t give much away:

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’ most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Maybe we’ll learn more when a new, full-length trailer debuts during Wednesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens in theaters March 25.

  • Ben Affleck: There’s ‘a Ton of Pressure’ on ‘Batman v Superman’ to Do Well

Every movie wants to find an audience, but big-budget movies with franchise ties and huge future plans really NEED to find an audience. A massive audience. And that audience has to like the movie enough to want to come back for sequels and tie-ins. It’s currently working for Marvel’s “Avengers” but what about DC? “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” comes out next year, as a follow-up to the meh-ly received “Man of Steel,” and it will be followed itself by “Suicide Squad,” “Wonder Woman,” “Aquaman,” “The Flash,” a two-part “Justice League” movie, and more.

Ben Affleck is the new Batman in “Batman v Superman” and he knows a lot of eyes will be on him and the movie, especially since it’s meant to include more of his Caped Crusader than Henry Cavill‘s Man of Steel. “I think there is a ton of pressure on it,” Ben Affleck admitted to Variety. “I mean I would be bulls—ting you to say there isn’t.”

Warner Bros. may not have had the strongest 2015, but Affleck is confident the studio will see a turnaround in 2016, which includes the releases of both “Batman v Superman” and “Suicide Squad.” As Affleck put it, “You’ll see next year they are going to have a great year. They are now developing … probably the single greatest under-exploited IP asset in the entertainment business, the DC comic world. And now they have started to exploit that and you are going to see that blossom. And, when it does, it’s going to be massive.”
Comic-Con International 2015 - Warner Bros. PresentationHowever, Affleck knows that results have to come pretty much immediately nowadays — in a huge opening weekend — or there’s potential for the whole thing to be tarred as a failure. “We are a very kind of instant gratification culture when it comes to analyzing the film business,” he told Variety. “And there is a lot of hyperbole involved. Nonetheless, there’s a lot of pressure on it. If it doesn’t do well, that will be extremely disappointing.”

What defines “well”? That may have to be determined next year, since blockbusters can still have massive openings (like the final “Hunger Games” movie) and get bad headlines because they didn’t open as well as other films.

A lot of people are rooting for “Batman v Superman” to succeed, but there are some out there expecting and maybe even wanting it to fail. What are your hopes and expectations?

  • See New ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ Photo of Ben Affleck and Batmobile

Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adaptive Studios And HBO Present The Project Greenlight Season 4 Winning Film "The Leisure Class"Why so serious(ly badass), Batman? Ben Affleck‘s Caped Crusader stands in front of his sweet ride in a new photo from “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.” The image was shared on Twitter by photographer Clay Enos, who bowed to fan requests and was duly thanked for his time. Here’s the pic:

Director Zack Snyder recently said there will be more of Ben Affleck’s Batman in “Dawn of Justice” than Henry Cavill‘s Superman, despite their shared billing in the title. As he noted, this is a different Batman than the one played by Christian Bale in the Christopher Nolan movies, so he needs a bit of explaining and context. Plus, Cavill’s Superman just had his own standalone movie, so he can take some steps back. He can’t step out of the movie, but expect to see and hear more from the guy above.

“Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is scheduled for release March 25, 2016, co-starring Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey, and Tao Okamoto.
