CinemaCon 2026: Amazon MGM Studios Presentation

After making its first trip to CinemaCon last year, Amazon MGM Studios has certainly been enjoying a good year at the box office so far, largely thanks to the huge success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ (which, as announced at the panel, just crossed $525 million at the global box office, cementing it as the company’s biggest movie to date, and will see its theatrical window extended, Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!).

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling, the studio unveiled new looks at this year’s crop of movies and beyond including ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’. But if you were expecting a surprise announcement about casting for the new James Bond movie, there was none –– but VP of Film Courtenay Valenti did promise it’ll be worthy of the venerable franchise’s legacy.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’

First out of the gate (even though it isn’t out until next March) was newly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan‘s remake of the 1968 caper movie –– previously re-imagined in 1999, which the actor is directing and starring in.

After a look at some fun footage, Jordan himself took the stage to talk up the fact that Jon Batiste is crafting the music for the movie. He also brought out co-star Adria Arjona, complimenting her “intensity, wit, and fire” while calling her “an incredible scene partner.” Their cat-and-mouse relationship (as art thief and the insurance investigator tracking him down) is at the core of the movie.

Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, plays the antagonist, the person that Jordan’s Crown targets. Jordan says he made the movie for big screens.

‘Masters of the Universe’

Hoping for another big hit, Amazon MGM is putting a lot of weight behind ‘Masters of the Universe’, which adapts the 1980s toy line and cartoon series (and was already focus of a notoriously unsuccessful 1987 movie).

Stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and director Travis Knight took the stage to introduce a new look at the film. Galitzine, of course, was hefting He-Man’s classic power sword, which is surely some sort of safety violation.

Some fresh footage from the movie –– which Knight and co. described as tackling how someone is challenged to step up beyond what they think they can do –– was screened after Galitzine had the audience lift the fake swords they received as he recited He-Man’s classic transformation line…

The new scene shows Galitzine’s Prince Adam and Mendes’ Teena reuniting on Earth before they travel to Eternia to battle the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), which in turn leads into the new trailer.

Another jump ahead in time for a quick look at footage from Jason Statham action sequel ‘The Beekeeper 2’. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from The Stath, and should keep fans happy. Statham himself appeared via video to exclaim, “some people say less is more. I say more is more.”

The new movie will see the Beekeeper society looking to overthrow the US government. At this point in time, the jokes write themselves…

‘The Sheep Detectives’

Back to 2026’s schedule, and the quirky mystery drama about a herd of sheep who must solve the murder of their beloved shepherd (Hugh Jackman).

Jackman himself arrived on stage (along with co-stars Nicholas Braun, and a returning Galitzine) to tout the film, which also boasts a considerable cast in both live-action (Emma Thompson) and voice (too many to list) form. It’s described as “a warm deeply human story about finding your place in the world.” And we got an extended look at the movie.

Sope Dirisu in the story of Colt, a Vietnam veteran turned contract killer, goes on the run after assassinating a gangland boss.

‘How to Rob a Bank’

With confetti and chaos, the new movie from director David Leitch launched into a first look at a team of social media types who make videos about, well, how to rob banks.

Leitch came on stage with Pete Davidson, and Davidson revealed that this group of robbers livestreams their crimes and robberies. “They’re putting an end to greed and corruption one heist, and one video, at a time,” he said, before Rhenzy Feliz and Anna Sawai were confirmed to be the other two robbers. Leitch wanted to capture the energy of a manic YouTube video, before a video message from the rest of the cast played.

‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother‘

The much-anticipated ‘Spaceballs’ sequel was introduced by originator Mel Brooks (via video), with cast members Bill Pullman, Josh Gad, Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and to great response, Rick Moranis actually present to introduce a first look at the movie, which is as funny as you might hope for. Let’s just say the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy is heavily targeted for spoofing.

It might still be busy shooting, but the re-imagining of the 1980s action movie is one of the bigger titles on the horizon for the studio.

With Henry Cavill starring as the immortal warrior who must battle others of his kind, it promises plenty of set pieces.

Cavill and director Chad Stahelski (‘John Wick’) are halfway through filming, but the former took time out to appear via video and offer some early footage.

The chaotic making of the 1976 Sylvester Stallone classic is the subject of this based-on-truth film from director Peter Farrelly.

He strode on stage with some of his cast to talk about the movie, one he described as “for dreamers” before cueing up a first look.

Henry Cavill Offers First Look at New ‘Highlander’

Cavill’s caption includes the phrase, “this has been quite the journey for me, which I’ll tell you all about when the time is right,” which might be a reference to an injury he sustained while training, which pushed the schedule of the movie back.

What’s the story of ‘Highlander’?

The 1988 original revolves around Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th Century who is somehow immortal. He has survived through the centuries, and learns from Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), that he is part of a race of many who can only die when beheaded.

We don’t exactly know what elements the new movie (written by Michael Finch) will utilize, but Stahelski has said the focus will be on modern-day New York and Hong Kong.

When will the new ‘Highlander’ be in cinemas?

The 1988 original revolves around Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th Century who is somehow immortal. He has survived through the centuries, and learns from Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), that he is part of a race of many who can only die when beheaded.

The power of the slain immortal is absorbed into the victor, and they are all competing for “The Prize” –– enough power to rule Earth forever. Connor’s biggest threat is the Kurgan, a murderous brute of an immortal who wants that power for himself and Connor must face him at an event known as The Gathering.

There can, as the tagline famously reads, only be one.

Here’s what Stahelski had to say about the plot and changes:

“We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There’s big opportunity for action… and it’s a bit of a love story — but not how you think.”

The script for the new movie has so far seen work from Ryan J. Condal, Michael Finch and Kerry Williamson.

Finch’s script is the most recent draft, and it is taking some diversions from the original as it builds out a more complex and deeper world.

Cavill is MacLeod, with Crowe as a version of Ramirez. Bautista is playing the Kurgan, the movie’s top villain, while Gillan is MacLeod’s Scottish and very mortal wife. Djimon Hounsou is an immortal warrior from Africa, while Abela is MacLeod’s modern romantic interest. Max Zhang and Drew McIntyre are also in the cast, with McIntyre taking the role of Cavill’s brother.

Irons will be the movie’s other antagonist, the leader of a secret order called The Watchers, who are keeping an eye on the immortals and see them as a threat to humanity.

When will the new ‘Highlander’ be on screens?

Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm a release date for the movie, and it may yet appear later given the production delay.

Does The Right Person Exist Out There To Play The New James Bond?

- With Daniel Craig stepping away and Amazon MGM Studios taking over the franchise, finding a new James Bond is crucial to the series’ success.
- Amazon supposedly has a wish list of actors, while other names have also been cropping up – sometimes for years.
- Only six actors have officially played Bond in more than 60 years.
Who should be the next actor to don the mantle of James Bond, agent 007 of the British Secret Service? That question has vexed filmmakers since the franchise first launched in 1962, when then-superstars like Cary Grant and Richard Burton were bypassed in favor of a little-known Scottish actor named Sean Connery. In the 60-plus years since ‘Dr. No’ introduced Bond to audiences, six actors (seven, if you include David Niven in the non-canonical 1967 Bond spoof, ‘Casino Royale’) have worn the tuxedo, with a mix of established stars and relative unknowns taking on the role for stints varying from one film (George Lazenby) to seven (Roger Moore).

Some Bonds, of course, have been more successful than others, but the venerable franchise faces a challenge on two fronts now: first, the property has changed hands for the first time in decades, with the Broccoli family’s Eon Productions – which has been behind every Bond film to date – ceding control to Amazon MGM Studios. Second, the next Bond actor will follow the five-film run of Daniel Craig, which yielded one of the franchise’s all-time best films (2006’s ‘Casino Royale’) as well as its highest-grossing (2012’s billion-earning ‘Skyfall’).

But there’s more to it than that. The next Bond, whoever he is – and all kinds of potential names have been circulating for years – has to find just the right balance of qualities. He should be young enough (early 30s) to have cross-generational appeal, but not too young that he seems to lack experience; he should be as quick with his gun as he is with a quip or double-entendre; he needs to portray both the ruthless brutality of a top-notch assassin and the vulnerability of a lonely, haunted man; and he must be both physically imposing and sexually alluring.

Not such a tall order, right? There’s no question that director Denis Villeneuve and producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman have their work cut out for them. So let’s take a quick scan of the names that are out there now – and analyze whether any of them are destined to become the next James Bond.

The Grizzled Veterans

Let’s start with the actors who won’t be Bond. The irony is that all of them were mooted for the role at one point or another, but time has frankly passed them by. That short list includes Henry Cavill, a fan favorite who auditioned for the role at age 22 but lost to Daniel Craig. At 42, he’s the same age as Pierce Brosnan when the latter got the part, and three years younger than Roger Moore. But Cavill is also far too recognizable from playing Superman in the DC Extended Universe and the title role in ‘The Witcher’ TV series.

Also, outside of his stints as Kal-El, Cavill is not a box office draw. That in itself means nothing, especially if the producers go with a smaller name – but Cavill has been on screens long enough to prove that he lacks a certain quality that audiences flock to see.

Tom Hardy, likewise, has been in hits such as ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and the ‘Venom’ trilogy, but has had an erratic box office run outside of those. At age 47, he’s also pretty much aged out of the role already. The same goes for 52-year-old Idris Elba, a popular choice for a long time who was reportedly reluctant to consider the role because he worried whether audiences would accept a Bond of color. Of the three, he probably would have been the most formidable choice.

Variety reported in June 2025 than Amazon MGM was interested in casting an actor under 30 as Bond. The studio’s wish list featured three actors: Tom Holland, Harris Dickinson, and Jacob Elordi — all decent-to-good actors still exploring their potential, but not necessarily able to nail the role of Bond.

Let’s dismiss Holland right off the bat. Fair or not, he’s a relatively small fellow with a baby face that will simply not suit Bond. Not only that, his global fame all stems from his portrayal of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in six Marvel films, with at least two more to go. At 28, the Australian Elordi (the person playing Bond, by the way, can be British, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or Australian – but not American) is probably the best all-around actor and may have just enough gravitas (and height) to evolve with the role. Dickinson, meanwhile, showed psychological and sexual intensity in ‘Babygirl’ and a rough physicality in ‘The Iron Claw,’ but like most of the actors attached to the role, would still have to bulk his slender frame up a bit.

When you get past names like Holland, Cavill, and Elordi, there is a whole crop of relatively young U.K. actors who, for the most part, are relatively obscure outside their home turf even if they’ve done some movie and TV work in Hollywood. Leading that pack is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s been bandied about as a frontrunner for 007 for the past couple of years but remains fairly low-key with the public despite roles in high-profile films like ‘Nosferatu’ and ‘28 Years Later.’ Taylor-Johnson is a good actor, but he’s missing something – a certain magnetism – that makes us reluctant to consider him for Bond.

Theo James is another British actor who has scored some impressive credentials – most recently, he starred in the TV version of ‘The Gentlemen,’ Season 2 of ‘The White Lotus’ and the Stephen King film ‘The Monkey’ – but at 40 may be at the tipping point to play 007. Will Poulter, meanwhile, has shown physical prowess in the recent ‘Warfare’ and as Adam Warlock in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ and can be quite menacing (he’s frightening as a sadistic cop in ‘Detroit’), but may lack the sexual spark necessary to attract female audiences.

One interesting candidate whose name has surfaced again and again is Scottish thespian Jack Lowden – at 35, he’s the right age, he has rugged good looks along with experience in physical action roles, and his resume (which also includes extensive stage work) ranges from high-level productions like the BBC’s 2016 version of ‘War and Peace’ to the acclaimed Apple TV+ series ‘Slow Horses,’ in which he plays – in an eerie coincidence – an MI5 agent.

Other U.K. actors whose names have been linked to the role at one point or another include Paul Mescal (‘Gladiator II’), Josh O’Connor (‘Challengers’), James Norton (‘The Nevers’), Callum Turner (‘Masters of the Air’), Regé-Jean Page (‘Bridgerton’), Damson Idris (‘F1’), Richard Madden (‘Eternals’), Sam Heughan (‘Outlander’), and Dev Patel (‘Monkey Man’).

Do any of these – or even the other candidates above – scream ‘James Bond’ at us? Not necessarily. But actors are capable of transforming themselves in ways that we ordinary folks can’t often imagine, and one of the above – if not someone yet unrevealed to us – will certainly emerge from that process as the next Bond…James Bond.

What was the story of ‘Highlander’?

The 1988 original revolves around Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th Century who is somehow immortal. He has survived through the centuries, and learns from Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), that he is part of a race of many who can only die when beheaded.

The power of the slain immortal is absorbed into the victor, and they are all competing for “The Prize” –– enough power to rule Earth forever. Connor’s biggest threat is the Kurgan, a murderous brute of an immortal who wants that power for himself and Connor must face him at an event known as The Gathering.

There can, as the tagline famously reads, only be one.

Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the first film is considered a cult classic, dividing audiences into those who love it and those who think it’s so bad it’s great. The movie is famous for its sword fights and its Queen-composed soundtrack.

Here’s what Stahelski had to say about his ideas:

“ ‘Highlander,’ I’ll tell you, if we get our s**t together and pull off a feature, we have ideas for days about the coolest characters and how to make that an epic TV show. I just think that’s a rich, rich mythology. Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”

As for the story:

“We’re bringing it forward from the early 1500s in the Highlands to the beyond present-day New York and Hong Kong. There’s big opportunity for action… and it’s a bit of a love story — but not how you think.”

The script for the new movie has so far seen work from Ryan J. Condal, Michael Finch and Kerry Williamson.

Dave Bautista Also Joins ‘Road House 2’

Deadline’s report also makes mention that Bautista will also be joining the cast of the sequel to Amazon MGM’s ‘Road House ’, for which we previously reported he was in talks.

‘Superman’ opens in theaters on July 11th, 2025.

Superman is one of the oldest and most beloved superheroes of all time!

Created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938 before making his live action debut played by Kirk Alyn in a series of movie serials in 1948 and eventually the 1950 movie ‘Aton Man vs. Superman‘. George Reeves took over the role in 1952 on the television series ‘Adventures of Superman‘ and reprised his role in the movie ‘Superman and the Mole Men‘.

But it was 1978’s ‘Superman‘ starring Christopher Reeve that became the definitive movie based on the character. Reeve would go on to play the character in three sequels, while TV versions of Superman included 1988’s ‘Superboy‘ starring both John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher as the young Man of Steel, 1993’s ‘Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman‘ featuring Dean Cain, ‘Smallville‘ starring Tom Welling as a young Clark Kent, and ‘Superman & Lois‘ featuring Tyler Hoechlin.

Back on the big screen, actor Brandon Routh would take over the role for ‘Superman Returns‘, before being recast by Henry Cavill for ‘Man of Steel‘, ‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ and ‘Justice League‘. Now, the mantle has been handed off once again to actor David Corenswet in director James Gunn‘s ‘Superman‘, which opens in theaters on July 11th.

The script for the new movie has so far seen work from Ryan J. Condal, Michael Finch and Kerry Williamson.

Finch’s script is the most recent draft, and via THR, it is taking some diversions from the original as it builds out a more complex and deeper world. According to sources, the feature seems to be populated by more immortals who also happen to be from various parts of the world.

According to current reports, Crowe will be a take on the “Spaniard” Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, as brought to life by Connery (with zero hint of a Spanish accent!)

So Crowe could be showing up as a veteran immortal warrior who helps Cavill’s character achieve his destiny.

As for Abela, she apparently has one of the other lead roles, a new characters for the story, an immortal who is a teacher of swordplay and one of MacLeod’s past loves.

Abela got her big break in the aforementioned UK/HBO series ‘Industry’, about the lives and loves of workers in the British banking.

She recently won a BAFTA TV award for her performance in the third season of the show that has gained acclaim in both the UK and the States.

And she played singer Amy Winehouse in musical biopic ‘Back to Black’ and stole scenes from Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett in ‘Black Bag,’ Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller that was released earlier this year to rave reviews (albeit less than stellar box office results).

When will the ‘Highlander’ reboot be on screens?

Despite Amazon MGM’s clear enthusiasm for the movie, it is not yet at a point where the company can set a release date, but ‘Highlander’ is apparently destined for theaters rather than direct to streaming.

Russell Crowe Joins the ‘Highlander’ Reboot

It’s been a while since we’ve heard much of an update about director Chad Stahelski’s plan to reboot the ‘Highlander’ action franchise, and that’s partly because of the actors’ and writers’ strikes in 2023 and the fault of a certain other well-known action character, John Wick (of which Stahelski is the main director and franchise overseer).

Yet there is some forward movement now on the film that will star Henry Cavill as an immortal warrior facing off against his fellow fighters, as Collider brings word that Russell Crowe is now aboard the film in an unspecified role.

What was the story of ‘Highlander’?

The 1988 original revolves around Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th Century who is somehow immortal. He has survived through the centuries, and learns from Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), that he is part of a race of many who can only die when beheaded.

The power of the slain immortal is absorbed into the victor, and they are all competing for “The Prize” –– enough power to rule Earth forever. Connor’s biggest threat is the Kurgan (Clancy Brown), a murderous brute of an immortal who wants that power for himself and Connor must face him at an event known as The Gathering.

There can, as the tagline famously reads, only be one.

Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the first film is considered a cult classic, dividing audiences into those who love it and those who think it’s so bad it’s great. The movie is famous for its sword fights and its Queen-composed soundtrack.

It spawned several sequels (including the much-maligned ‘Highlander II: The Quickening’, which attempted to introduce the idea that the immortals are aliens), various spin-off TV series plus comics, video games and a host of other merchandise.

While Stahelski clearly loves the original, he’s not above pointing out its flaws:

“There’s not a lot that happens in the second act, It’s mostly about bitchin’ flashbacks with Sean Connery mugging the camera. You watch the movie, and it has no business being good or cool or interesting, but for whatever reason — the fisheye lenses, weird sword fights, f****d up dialogue, and the Queen soundtrack make it one of the funnest movies you’ll ever watch.”

Here’s what Stahelski had to say about his ideas:

“ ‘Highlander,’ I’ll tell you, if we get our s**t together and pull off a feature, we have ideas for days about the coolest characters and how to make that an epic TV show. I just think that’s a rich, rich mythology. Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”

As for the story:

It’s anyone’s guess at this point as to how Crowe will fit into the story, but there are options.

He could, for example, be playing a version of the Kurgan, and we could see Crowe doing something fun and intense with the concept of an immortal psychopath who has, in the Brown version, gone on to be one of the most memorable screen baddies.

And then there is famed “Spaniard” Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez, as brought to life by Connery. Could Crowe be showing up as a veteran immortal warrior who helps Cavill’s character achieve his destiny?

Finally, given the changes that Stahelski is planning, he could be an all-new character. We’re still guessing he could unleash hell! Wait, no, wrong franchise…

‘Voltron’ Movies Adds Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora and More

When we learned way back in 2022 that Rawson Marshall Thurber –– who has made movies such as ‘Red Notice,’ ‘Skyscraper,’ ‘Central Intelligence’ and ‘Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story’ –– was developing a live-action take on anime stalwart ‘Voltron’, we’re not sure we foresaw it taking quite this long to come together.

Still, a couple of years is, we suppose, not all that bad given that some movies take decades to finally reach screens.

Thurber is now boosting the cast for the new film, with Sterling K. Brown, musician/actor Rita Ora and John Kim stepping aboard.

All being well, Thurber should have the cameras rolling this month in Australia.

What’s the story of ‘Voltron’?

‘Voltron’ has its roots in the Japanese sci-fi series ‘Beast King GoLion’ and ‘Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV’.

American production World Events bought the rights for the States, then edited and dubbed the series as a syndicated show, titling it ‘Voltron: Defender of the Universe’, which ran in the mid-1980s.

The premise focused on five young pilots in a battalion named the Robot Lions, which are vehicles that merge to form a mega robot known as Voltron and take on a variety of enemies.

The show in animated form has already been rebooted twice, once for the NickToon channel in 2011, while the current version is on Netflix.

It’s a compelling concept (one that has been referenced and parodied endlessly since its heyday) and a-live action version has been in development at different terms since the early 2000s.

The plot for the new movie, which Thurber wrote with Ellen Shanman, is a mystery for now, but we can expect a fair amount of giant robot combat.

This is what Thurber told fans at a ‘Voltron’ convention this past October:

“I want to make sure that we stay true to the heart and the spirit of ‘Voltron.’ In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined ‘Voltron’ for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to those iconic elements that you love, that I love.”

Who else will appear in ‘Voltron’?

The new recruits join Henry Cavill, who was cast in October, and Daniel Quinn-Toye, a relative newcomer whose previous screen credit was a tiny role in a BBC sitcom called ‘Badults’ that ran in 2013 and 2014.

But Quinn-Toye has one other job that caught the eye of Thurber and Amazon MGM studios: the 21-year old actor, who attended London’s Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts as well as the Dance School of Scotland, was the understudy to Tom Holland in the ‘Spider-Man’ actor’s big return to the theater world this past spring in the West End production of ‘Romeo & Juliet.’ He also had small roles in the play itself.

What else are Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora and John Kim working on?

Brown, who was most recently seen in ‘American Fiction’ (for which he received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination) and Netflix sci-fi thriller ‘Atlas’, is starring in and executive producing Hulu drama series ‘Paradise,’ created by Dan Fogelman, who helped Brown break out in ‘This is Us.’

The actor is due to begin production on Elegance Bratton’s ‘By Any Means’ opposite Mark Wahlberg, and recently wrapped production on Hulu’s limited series ‘Washington Black.’

While Ora is best known for her successful music career, she is increasingly taking acting and hosting jobs, and was last seen in Disney’s ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ (and is in the cast for the fifth outing of the popular franchise).

She’s also recently worked on the movies ‘Tin Soldier’ and ‘He Bled Neon.’

Australian actor Kim already has a connection to an Amazon production, since he was in the cast for Prime Video’s ‘Cruel Intentions,’ the television reimagining of the 1999 cult teen movie classic.

When will ‘Voltron’ be on screens?

Amazon MGM Studios has yet to confirm a release date for the movie. Given the likely post-production/effects workload, 2026 would be a more sensible target given that production is only now about to kick off.
