  • ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Filming Photos Have Us Intrigued, and Jealous

If you happen to be spending Springtime in Paris, keep an eye out for Henry Cavill. He’s running around out there — literally running, since he’s training for the Durrell Challenge while filming “Mission: Impossible 6.” DC’s Superman is a new addition to the M:I world, joining Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, and director Christopher McQuarrie as they film the sixth movie in the franchise for its 2018 release.

Filming started earlier this month, with Tom Cruise almost immediately up on a roof for a stunt. Both McQuarrie and Cavill have kept fans up-to-date with beautiful Parisian photos to remind us that they are living the dream out there while we’re doing whatever we’re doing.

The photo at top (in full below) with the director, Cruise, and Cavill shows the actors geared up for some kind of night stunt. (Are they about to jump off something?) There’s no official word yet on Cavill’s role, or what Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust will be up to this time.

    Here’s more from the filmmakers:

  • ‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Starts Filming, With Tom Cruise Already Pulling Stunts

Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation UK Fan ScreeningYour mission, should you choose to accept it, is to get hyped for “Mission: Impossible 6,” which comes out in July 2018.

Tom Cruise‘s Ethan Hunt is back, along with Rebecca Ferguson, with Jeremy Renner not in play for MI6, but Superman himself Henry Cavill joining the team.

Director Christopher McQuarrie announced the official start of filming:

Henry Cavill took a cuter approach when teasing his film preparation, including his dog in every shot:

That Traveling Bear needs to be in the movie.

“Mission: Impossible 6” started filming April 8, and paparazzi actually got the first shots of the movie when they found Tom Cruise on a Paris roof, surrounding by helicopters (of course). Will this stunt be able to top Tom Cruise’s now iconic plane scene from “Rogue Nation”? In February while prepping this movie, McQuarrie teased the next big stunts to Empire Podcast:

“I may have found something today. I came to Tom with a picture of something and Tom looked at it and said, ‘That’s awesome! I want to fall off of that!’ It’s like, OK, I can see it on a poster, and I can see Tom falling off of it.”

Nice! However, he cautioned that this stunt would not be the opener. “It starts in a very unconventional way. It does not start with action. That was the hardest pitch of this movie.”

McQuarrie also said we’ll see “a very different Ethan Hunt, I can promise you that.” After five films, the director said he didn’t really know Ethan yet, so this time, “I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it.’

“Mission: Impossible 6” is currently scheduled for release on July 27, 2018.

  • Jeremy Renner Won’t Be In ‘Mission: Impossible 6’

It’s hard to juggle two or three major franchises, which means Jeremy Renner‘s commitment to Marvel is nixing his return to “Mission: Impossible,” according to Showbiz411.

Renner is shooting “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp” back-to-back and there’s just no room for the Tom Cruise spy franchise at this point.

This is likely why Henry Cavill (who’s got his own mega-franchise commitment) was announced for the sixth “Mission” film, which will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

Renner played William Brandt in 2015’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” and 2011’s “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.”

The two-time Oscar nominee also has “Wind River,” the new film from “Hell or High Water” director Taylor Sheridan coming out this August.

As for that sequel to “The Bourne Legacy“? It’s probably not happening.

  • Henry Cavill Training Hard to ‘Make Sure That I’m Bigger Than Green Lantern’

CinemaCon 2015 - Warner Bros. Pictures Invites You To 'The Big Picture,' An Exclusive Presentation Highlighting The Summer Of 20Why is Superman currently training to out-muscle Green Lantern? Henry Cavill knows he has DC fans talking after his cryptic new Instagram post.

Superman was left in a bad way at the end of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and Cavill has not been on the promotion circuit for “Justice League.” But he is in training, rehabilitating his knee after an injury, and he got the DC Extended Universe buzzing after this post:

    “Wait whaaat?” is right.

Maybe he’s just joking about the rumor that his “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” co-star Armie Hammer will play Green Lantern, since there’s been speculation that Hammer is up for the part in “Green Lantern Corps.” Maybe he’s semi-spoiling that the rumor is true? Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan in the 2011 movie “Green Lantern,” but he is now busy as Deadpool, so it seems more likely that someone new will put on the suit.

Hammer is recovering from a recent surgery, but at SXSW Screen Rant asked him if he’s still in the running for “Green Lantern Corps.” Hammer shrugged and said, “I don’t know. Technically (I am), because they haven’t hired anyone.”

As ScreenRant noted, Green Lantern is expected to show up in the DCEU at some point, and there are rumors that he might even appear in “Justice League” before “Green Lantern Corps.” CinemaBlend joined the speculation brigade after Cavill’s tease: “Does that mean we may actually get a Lantern appearance in ‘Justice League’ after all? Or maybe Green Lantern will be appearing in ‘Man of Steel 2’ which appears to have recently found a director? Is Cavill expecting to appear in ‘Green Lantern Corps’?” Or is Cavill just messing with us?

For now, we just know “Justice League” is opening November 17.

  • Netflix’s ‘Sand Castle’ Trailer Sends Nicholas Hoult & Henry Cavill to Iraq War

You can tell Nicholas Hoult‘s Private Matt Ocre is not one of those gung ho soldiers just seconds into the “Sand Castle” trailer. He smashes his own hand in a door, over and over, with the hope of having an injury bad enough to keep him from combat in Iraq. It does not work.

The new Netflix original movie, co-starring Henry Cavill, Glen Powell, and Logan Marshall-Green, arrives on Netflix April 21.

    Here’s the synopsis:

“Set in Iraq in 2003, ‘Sand Castle’ follows a group of American soldiers in the early days of the second Gulf War. Bearing witness to the heat and the horror is the inexperienced Private Matt Ocre (Nicholas Hoult), who, together with several fellow soldiers, is ordered to the outskirts of Baqubah to repair a water pumping station damaged by U.S. bombs. But, as Ocre discovers, in an atmosphere where resentment and anger fester, trying to win the hearts and minds of the locals is a task fraught with danger. It’s here, in the streets, squares and schools that he discovers the true cost of war.”

  • ‘Man of Steel 2’ Is Happening, According to Henry Cavill’s Agent

Last month, rumors swirled that the long-awaited sequel to 2013’s “Man of Steel” was finally moving forward, though there was no confirmation from anyone at Warner Bros. on the subject. Now, a source connected to Superman himself is claiming that the flick is definitely still happening, and is currently in development.

Dany Garcia, a Hollywood super agent with starry clients like Dwayne Johnson, recently added another big name to her roster: Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in DC’s film universe. In an extensive interview with Newsweek discussing her recent successes — including securing Johnson the title of the world’s highest-paid actor — Garcia also added a juicy bit of intel about her new client, offering a bit of an update on “Man of Steel 2” in the process.

Here’s what Garcia told Newsweek about her work with Cavill so far:

“We’ve been in a five-month period of time where he’s re-strategizing, acquiring property [for his production company Promethean], he’s filming [‘Justice League’] now, he’s in development for the ‘Superman’ standalone… he’s beginning to expand that world. It’s beautifully teed up.”

The key passage is obviously “he’s in development on the ‘Superman’ standalone,” which is similar to language from last month’s report stating that Warner Bros. was “in active development” on the project. So it seems that the rumors are indeed true. Now the only question remaining is just when fans can expect to see that film.

“Man of Steel 2” was originally slated for a tentative 2018 release, though with the upcoming standalone Batman movie in the wings, in addition to the 2017 releases of “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League: Part One,” it seems DC’s slate is currently quite crowded. We’ll have to wait until we hear from the studio itself before we know when it plans to unveil the sequel.

  • Henry Cavill Teases New Superman Suit for ‘Justice League’

superman, henry cavill, suit, new suit, justice leagueProduction on “Justice League: Part One” is officially underway, and fans have already gotten quite a few behind the scenes looks at what to expect when the flick finally hits theaters late next year. Now, star Henry Cavill has also shared a sneak peek of his new Superman duds for the film, foretelling a more somber return for the Man of Steel.

Cavill took to Instagram this week to reveal a snippet of his Superman costume, and this time, it looks a bit different from the iconic red, blue, and yellow number that fans have come to associate with the hero. The super tight closeup shot shows very little of his look, but the new color scheme is unmissable: this time, Supe will be sporting solid black.

That likely means that “Justice League” will closely follow the plot of the “Death and Return of Superman” comic series from the 1990s, which saw the Man of Steel return from his demise wearing an all-black suit. And since (SPOILER ALERT for those who have yet to see “Batman v Superman”) Cavill’s character died at the end of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it would make sense to resurrect him with this new costume.

Of course, there’s still a possibility that Cavill may have just been getting a little creative with his Instagram filters, and the suit actually isn’t black at all. We’ll have to wait until someone else from the production — perhaps even the actor himself — shares some more intel from the set before we know more.

“Justice League: Part One” is due in theaters on November 17, 2017.

  • ‘Man of Steel 2’ Is Reportedly in ‘Active Development’ at Warner Bros.

After the disappointing box office performance of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” many DC fans wondered if that meant that Superman wouldn’t be getting another standalone film. But according to a new report, a sequel to “Man of Steel” is indeed in development, though there’s no word yet on when it may see the light of day.

TheWrap reports that “Man of Steel 2” is “going into active development” at studio Warner Bros., reaffirming DC’s plan to give Superman another standalone flick. Here’s the scoop from the site:

Despite Superman’s battle with Batman, DC has been silent on a sequel to “Man of Steel” featuring Superman solo, leading many frustrated fanboys to believe that another film wasn’t going to happen. But a person close to the project told TheWrap that Superman is a top priority for the studio and getting the character right for audiences is of tantamount importance.

DC fans certainly had reason to worry, since the comic powerhouse’s foray onto the big screen hasn’t been as successful as it had hoped. Fans and critics alike were divided on “Man of Steel,” “Dawn of Justice,” and the most recent release, “Suicide Squad,” and some feared that the years-long radio silence on the subject of “Man of Steel 2” meant that that flick would never materialize. And while “disappointing” may be a relative term when discussing a movie that pulled in $872 million worldwide, “Dawn of Justice” was expected to easily surpass that (it was eyeing somewhere north of $1 billion), leading some to speculate that DC was moving on from the idea of another Superman standalone flick.

While “Man of Steel 2” was originally slated for a May 2018 release date, that seems very unlikely to hold now. Though TheWrap’s report notes that there’s no word on a replacement release date yet, it’s likely to come out after the upcoming standalone Batman movie, which also does not have a release date.

Stay tuned for more intel as it becomes available.

  • Superman Is Coming to ‘Supergirl’ Season 2 (But It Won’t Be Henry Cavill)

“Supergirl” is becoming even more super in season two: Superman himself is set to appear on the show’s sophomore season.

The show, which follows the exploits of the titular heroine and her alter ego, Kara Danvers (both played by Melissa Benoist), will be moving from CBS to The CW this fall, and the show is making sure that loyal viewers follow by also finally introducing the Man of Steel in the flesh. Though Supergirl’s more famous cousin has been alluded to (and appeared in quick flashes) on the show’s first season, he’ll now have a proper role on the series, in what is set to be a two-episode arc.

According to Deadline, the plan is to introduce Superman (and Clark Kent) during the first two episodes of season two. While it’s currently unclear if the character will appear again after that, the trade notes that it’s likely, since his mythology is so closely tied to Kara’s (and Superman is such an established household name).

Of course, DC fans who’ve been watching Henry Cavill’s exploits as the Man of Steel on the big screen shouldn’t get their hopes up about the Brit appearing on the CW show: “Supergirl” is actively looking for a different actor to cast. That follows the same pattern as fellow DC property — and CW series — “The Flash,” which features two different actors portraying the hero on TV (Grant Gustin) and in film (Ezra Miller).

Season two of “Supergirl” makes its CW debut this fall on Mondays at 8 p.m.

  • How ‘Batman v Superman’ Beat the Haters and Became a Box Office Juggernaut

batman v superman box officeHave you seen some of the scathing reviews that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” has received? Forget Lex Luthor and Doomsday; this week it seemed like the biggest threats to the DC superheroes were the critics, who hurled pans that could have thwarted not just Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent but Warner Bros.’ vast DC Extended Universe franchise plans for the next decade.

Didn’t happen, of course. The fanboys — and everyone else — went anyway, helping “BvS” launch the franchise with an estimated $170.1 million, exceeding predictions by about $20 million and smashing numerous records in the process. It’s the biggest March opening ever, the biggest opening for a Batman or Superman movie, and the biggest opening ever for Warner Bros. With its dismal 29 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes, it’s also the worst-reviewed movie ever to earn more than $150 million during its first weekend.

So the universe is safe, and so is Warners’ investment in the future, starting with the $250 million invested in just this film’s production. Still, how did the studio manage to overcome the Kryptonite-like reviews, not to mention decades’ worth of justifiable fanboy apprehension over Warners’ often botched efforts to create its own Marvel-like big-screen mega-franchise? Here are six secret weapons “BvS” had up its spandex sleeves.

    1. Wonder Womanwonder womanShe may not have a huge part in the film, but DC fans have been waiting 75 years to see her on the big screen. According to a survey by ticket pre-seller Fandango, Gal Gadot‘s Amazon warrior princess was the single biggest draw, cited by 88 percent of respondents. Of course, Gadot has her own fanbase from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and everyone knows she’s getting her own “Wonder Woman” movie next year. So many viewers were willing to sit through 2 1/2 hours of “BvS” just for a few glimpses of Wonder Woman holding her own with the top-billed heroes.

    2. Everyone Else Who Isn’t Batman or Supermanlex luther and lois laneAccording to the same survey, 60 percent of those polled were fans of Jesse Eisenberg who were eager to see the “Social Network” star’s take on villainous mogul Lex Luthor. And 66 percent were fans of director Zack Snyder, whose previous DC comic book films include “Watchmen” and “Man of Steel.” Not that people didn’t also want to see Ben Affleck‘s version of Batman or see “Man of Steel” star Henry Cavill don the red Super-cape again. Still, there were lots of other draws, including even the auteur behind the camera. Speaking of whom…

    3. 3D and IMAXsupermanLove him or hate him (and there are many in both camps), Snyder deserves credit as a creator of eye-popping visuals that really do look like frames from a comic book brought to life. His movies are among the few that do benefit from being seen in enhanced format. It’s no wonder that a full 40 percent of this weekend’s “BvS” grosses came from 3D screenings, and a healthy 10.6 percent came from IMAX showings. Those ticket surcharges helped the supercharged opening.

    4. TimingDiana Prince / Wonder WomanIt’s late March, so there’s really nothing out there, not even “Deadpool” or “Zootopia,” that offered a real obstacle to the “BvS” steamroller. The only other wide-release movie this week was the romantic comedy “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2,” which actually did better than expected with it estimated $18.1 million premiere. Of course, it’s audience was 76 percent female, while “BvS” viewers were mostly guys (62 percent). So it’s not like Warner Bros. had to worry about Universal’s rom-com stealing much of its action audience.

    5. The DC Universebatman v supermanAs Marvel fans know, it’s sometimes hard to follow all the action in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies if you haven’t been paying attention since the beginning. DC fans know that, if they want to keep up with the DC movies that will spring from this one — there are at least 10 of them on the drawing board set for release over the next five years, including this summer’s “Suicide Squad,” next year’s “Wonder Woman” and “Justice League,” and several others — they had to get in on the ground floor with “BvS.” Indeed the new movie contains not just a Wonder Woman guest spot but teasers and Easter eggs for heroes, villains, and plot developments that may not come to fruition for several years.

    6. FOMOben affleck as batmanBut even if you’re not interested in coming up with your own fan theories or spotting references that may not pay off until, say, the release of the “Cyborg” movie in 2020, you still wanted to see “Batman v Superman” just out of Fear of Missing Out. Thanks to months (years?) of hype, it’s become part of the national conversation. (International, even, since the film has grossed an estimated $254 million abroad.) The terrible reviews have only added to that conversation. It can’t really be as bad as they say, can it? You went out of curiosity, or because you assumed the critics were just being pointy-headed elitists, or because, even if you thought they might be right, you still had to share the experience. (In fact, the film earned a blah B at CinemaScore, suggesting that word-of-mouth among viewers isn’t much more enthusiastic than the reviews.) It’s a conversation that’s not going to die down any time soon, especially because of the film’s controversial ending that’s sure to divide even die-hard DC Comics readers who might have seen it coming.

Or maybe you’ve just wondered since you were a kid who would win if your two favorite DC heroes fought each other. If so, then the premise of “Batman v Superman” is nearly impossible to resist.
