  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Trailer: Joker, Harley Quinn Get Biggest Comic-Con Reaction

UPDATE: Warner Bros. has released a high-quality version of the “Suicide Squad” Comic-Con trailer, which can be viewed right here:
    PREVIOUSLY…

“Suicide Squad” is still filming in Toronto, but director David Ayer and cast showed up at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 to promise fans a great movie and show the first big trailer. And of course that trailer was immediately leaked online.

Watch the video below to see David Ayer basically do some D.C. vs. Marvel stand-up for the crowd, then introduce cast members Karen Fukuhara (Katana), Adam Beach (Slipknot), Cara Delevingne (Enchantress), Jay Hernandez (El Diablo), Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Killer Croc), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flagg), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), and Will Smith (Deadshot).

Will Smith ends the video by saying, “This group right here, we are banging out something that is absolutely fantastic and stunning. And this guy right here, David Ayer, is the absolute truth, he is making something you are going to love.”

David Ayer joked about the leaked set photos from their time filming on the streets, saying people had been shooting some footage with their iPhones, so here’s a little something he found online. Cue the trailer. And cue the bootleg version. Here’s a fan-shot video over here — and you can hear the crowd definitely sharing the strongest reactions for all the shots of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and (especially) the few end-of-trailer glimpses of Jared Leto‘s Joker. It does seem like the Joker is being positioned as the real star of this movie, in part because of how secretive they’ve tried to be about him. Jared was not at Comic-Con and his character only appears at the end like a special treat.

“Suicide Squad” is set for release August 5, 2016.

  • ‘Deadpool’ Trailer Gets Encore at Comic-Con, Then Leaked Online

Comic-Con audiences tend to gush over everything, but they REALLY loved the new “Deadpool” trailer.

Fans have been promised “a hard R” from the Ryan Reynolds superhero movie, and the trailer features plenty of dirty language, a sex scene, action sequences, an avocado reference and … “Shoop.” Yes. According to Variety, the trailer is supposed to premiere online this week, but if you can’t wait, you can watch a bootleg version shot in the theater and leaked by a fan.

The trailer got a standing ovation during the “Deadpool” panel Saturday night, along with chants of “One more time!” So they played it again in an encore. Based on the footage, it looks like the encore version is the one that got leaked.

“Deadpool” is scheduled for release February 12, 2016, so there’s plenty of time for more footage to drop. Are you happy with what you’ve seen so far?

  • ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’ Characters, ‘Connected Universe’ Teased at Comic-Con 2015

Comic-Con International 2015 - "American Horror Story" And "Scream Queens" PanelIt’s confirmed: “American Horror Story” fans are going to want check in to “Hotel” and never check out.

We already knew “American Horror Story: Hotel” was shaping up to be a killer installment of the Emmy-winning FX anthology series, but after showrunner Ryan Murphy spilled a bunch of beans during the show’s panel at Comic-Con 2015 today, it’s clear that it’s also going to be a very satisfying trip for fans looking to revisit characters from series past.

“We have a long-term plan with the show. Things are connected,” Murphy revealed. “So characters are connected to different seasons. [Pepper] obviously is the first. This season you’ll see more and more of that. Characters from previous seasons will come back and check into the hotel. It’s part of a connected universe with a pretty cool thesis statement at the end of the run.”

Murphy also chatted about the buzziest addition to the “AHS: Hotel” cast, Lady Gaga, who wasn’t in attendance. But, sadly, those looking for the ostentatious performer to go full Gaga are in for some disappointment: She will NOT be singing. He explained that Gaga wrote to him as a fan of the show and asked if he would ever consider putting her on it. Her one stipulation? “I want to be evil.” Yes! The only other tidbit he served up was that her role involves fashion, adding “You want her to look a certain way.” Sounds like we’ll get a bit of the Gaga we already know and love, after all.

If you’re thinking that — outside of Gaga — “AHS: Hotel” is going to serve up more of the same (hey, it’s pretty much the same cast), think again. Murphy is still looking to make your jaw drop. After acknowledging that Sarah Paulson, who has starred in each iteration of “American Horror Story,” has survived every season so far, the showrunner admitted “We gotta change that right away … but not in the way that you might think.”

A twist on a death in AHS? We would have it any other way.

“American Horror Story: Hotel” premieres in October on FX. Additional reporting by Jessica Wedemeyer.

  • SDCC 2015: ‘Supernatural’ Fans Raise Candles to Support Jared Padalecki

“Supernatural” had a very touching human moment during its Comic-Con 2015 panel in San Diego.

Once the moderators opened the floor to fan questions, the audience held up faux candles in unison. The cast didn’t know what was happening, but the audience called out, “Always keep fighting,” in reference to Jared Padalecki’s campaign to support people, like himself, who have struggled with depression. Jared shared the photo shown above on Twitter during the panel, and addressed the candle-holders, saying, “This is so touching and humbling and honoring … I don’t have the proper words to say thank you or how humbled and honored and excited I am and keep it up, guys. Thank y’all so much.”

In March, Jared talked to Variety about his depression, and why he launched his T-shirt campaign to “Always Keep Fighting.”

    As he told Variety:

I, for a long time, have been passionate about people dealing with mental illness and struggling with depression, or addiction, or having suicidal thoughts and, strangely enough, it’s almost like the life I live, as well. These characters that we play on “Supernatural,” Sam and Dean, are always dealing with something greater than themselves, and I’ve sort of learned from the two of them that they get through it with each other, and with help and with support. And I, in the past, have had my own struggles of not [being] so happy with where I am in life, which is strange and I think it goes to show. … Maybe a lot of people don’t know this, but Season 3, we were shooting an episode, and I went back to my trailer to get changed and just kind of broke down.

A doctor came to set and talked to me for about 30 minutes or 45 minutes and said: “Jared, I think you’re clinically depressed. I think I should write you a note and we can shut down production for five days and then we can take it from there.” And it kind of hit me like a sack of bricks. I mean, I was 25 years old. I had my own TV show. I had dogs that I loved and tons of friends and I was getting adoration from fans and I was happy with my work, but I couldn’t figure out what it was; it doesn’t always make sense is my point. It’s not just people who can’t find a job, or can’t fit in in society that struggle with depression sometimes.

Luckily, two of my great friends, Jensen who everybody knows very well, and my friend Kelly who I work with, came to my trailer to check in on me and talked to me for probably an hour or so and then, I was like, “All right guys, I’m going through a tough time right now. I don’t know what it is, but I’m just going to keep my legs moving. I’m going to keep fighting.” They let me go that day. They were like, “Hey buddy, go home. Call your family, and you’re off work. Come back to work tomorrow.”

I say constantly that there’s no shame in dealing with these things. There’s no shame in having to fight every day, but fighting every day, and presumably, if you’re still alive to hear these words or read this interview, then you are winning your war. You’re here. You might not win every battle. There are going to be some really tough days. There might be several tough times in any given single day, but hopefully, this will help somebody to think, “This isn’t easy; it is a fight, but I’m going to keep fighting,” and that’s why we did this shirt.”

Beautiful. Good for him — and good for his friends and SPN Family for stepping in with support!

“Supernatural” Season 11 will premiere Wednesday, October 7. Additional reporting by Jessica Wedemeyer.

  • SDCC 2015: ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Scoop on New Characters, More Seasons

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 just started filming this past week, but executive producer Julie Plec shared some good news during the TVD’s Comic-Con panel Sunday, July 12 in San Diego.

For one thing, Julie addressed the idea of Season 7 marking the series finale. “I do not foresee the show ending after next season,” she said. “I think that we have more story to tell and I think that we’ve built this gorgeous family that I’m not quite ready to split up yet.” Nice! Speaking of that family, a few members will be added (and, as you know, Nina Dobrev was subtracted). As Julie told the SDCC audience: “There are some really great new characters. Three women especially. Valerie, who we just cast this weekend … then a new couple, Nora and Mary-Louise, who have been together for 120 years, I think.”

TVLine dropped some hints on these new characters last month, noting that we’ll be meeting TVD’s first same-sex couple. As they teased:

First up are Nora and Mary Louise, a dangerous duo of down-low lovers with murderous tendencies. The vampires, both turned in their mid-20s, have kept their relationship a secret for more than a century, and although their connection is clear to those able to infiltrate their inner circle, Mary Louise’s constant doting can sometimes feel a bit smothery for fiery Nora’s liking. Still, anyone foolish enough to cross either of them will feel both their wraths.

In addition to the aforementioned twosome, we’ll also be meeting Valerie, another 20-something vampire who relies on her dry sense of humor to counter a life of pain and dismissal. She’ll encounter someone who helps her remember the happier, free spirit she once was — and she’ll do whatever it takes to keep him in her life.”

Are you excited to see the new and core cast in action this fall?

“The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 premieres Thursday, October 8 on The CW. Additional reporting by Jessica Wedemeyer.

  • SDCC: New ‘Batman v Superman’ Trailer Reveals Wonder Woman in Action, Lots of Punching

Clutch the pearls, guys. The new Comic-Con trailer for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is here.

Director Zack Snyder, Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Godot took the stage at Hall H Saturday, where they revealed new footage that included our first look at Wonder Woman in action. (Yes, fans — she uses her bracelets. And it’s amazbutts.)

We also see what’s left of the Batcave, as Affleck’s Bruce Wayne looks up with sad eyes at the battle-ravaged husk of a Robin costume, defaced with the Joker’s graffiti.

Other highlights include: Superman unleashing a full blast of heat vision on The Dark Knight, moments before Batman grapple-hooks his way to safety; General Zod in a body bag; A figure dressed-up as Batman, in the desert, battling a SWAT-like army that sports the “S” logo on their arms; and Supes tearing the roof off the Batmobile as Bats slowly rises to face him. Pissed.

And now we’re shaking and trembling again…

Jury’s still out though on Jesse Eisenberg‘s take on Lex Luthor. The footage shown here has the actor engaging in some questionable line readings (“The red capes are coming…”) and wearing an even more questionable wig. See for yourself below:

    “BvS” kick-punches into theaters March 25, 2016.

  • How Willow Shields & Jennifer Lawrence Went From Sisters to Best Friends

Comic-Con International 2015 - Day 1 Willow Shields has had the pleasure of playing Jennifer Lawrence‘s sister since 2012, and while their real-life relationship definitely started off as more of a sister bond, it’s developed into an even deeper relationship.

“At the beginning, it was like she was a big sister to me, and now it’s become more like friends,” she told Moviefone Contributing Editor Jessica Wedemeyer during this year’s Comic-Con.

Shields also revealed that she thinks growing up around Lawrence definitely strengthened their friendship. “I feel like, as I’ve gotten older, we’ve kind of gotten closer in that sense — and it’s interesting to see how that changed too cause I guess in a certain sense you’ve seen the characters evolve into that a little bit as well — and even though they’re very much so sisters, they’re also best friends. So I feel like we can definitely share that similarity.”

The biggest benefit of being sister-friends with Lawrence? She has a plethora of wisdom to share. “She’s been working in the industry since she was my age, and she’s basically like, ‘You’ve got to put a lot of hard work into it because at some point it will pay off.’ It may take a while, but it will pay off — and I’m actually so lucky to already at 15 have some of that work and some of that hard work pay off — hugely, already! So that’s pretty incredible.”

And it’s a good thing she has that advice to look to because she’s spending her formative years in the spotlight. “It’s one thing to grow up from 10 to 15, but it’s another thing to grow up in the industry,” she said. “I feel like I’ve tried to keep a little more normalcy in my life. I’m home-schooled, but I’m still very involved in schooling and things like that.”

One way Shields makes herself feel like a regular teenager is surrounding herself with people who don’t live in the Hollywood bubble. “I have friends who are not in the industry. It’s hard to grow up in this kind of environment, but I feel like it’s forced me to grow up quicker. I think it’s incredible though. Not a lot of people can ay that they were playing a character in a huge franchise for years — a really epic franchise. It’s nothing but good things in general.”

We think she’s going to be great! “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” hits theaters November 20th.

  • Watch Official ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Trailer (Plus Spoilers)

Claimed! “The Walking Dead” Season 6 Comic-Con trailer just made its official debut today (Friday, July 10) at San Diego Comic-Con. A slightly shorter version was leaked online last night, but the full trailer has an extra 30 seconds a the start, before Enid walks through the gate, extending the footage to more than 4 minutes. That super-size length is perfect for the Season 6 premiere, which was announced to be 90 minutes, starting Sunday, October 11 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.

    Here’s the full trailer:

The trailer certainly leaves us with a lot of questions. Will almost everyone be against Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) this season, including his two BFFs? We figured Mr. All Life Is Precious Morgan Jones (Lennie James) might have concerns about The Ricktator’s kill-or-die strategy — and the trailer includes Morgan’s voice saying, “I know Rick, I can stop him” — but it looks like maybe Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) could disagree with Rick too. Probably not really though, since the trailers are always misleading, with quotes moved around and visuals definitely positioned to send us down the wrong path.

This trailer not only focuses on Team Rick vs. Team Alexandria, it also ends with Daryl appearing to be in danger. But that’s probably more trolling to get the Daryl fans in a tizzy. But who ties up Daryl and points a gun at him, demanding that he not say sh-t or he’ll be killed? One of The Wolves or a different threat, since that particular guy did not have a “W”? (Some fans seem to think this guy is Kirk, a new character announced for this season. Didn’t see much of Heath, though.)

*Warning: Walking Dead comic book spoilers referenced ahead*

Who is Rick pointing a gun at in his “Do you have any idea who you’re talking to” speech? In the comic book, that speech — which ends with a great “united we stand” rally — was from Rick to Nicholas in Issues 89-90, when Nicholas says everything was fine before Rick showed up, then pulls a gun on Glenn, Maggie and everyone in his anti-Rick rant. But the TV show has already given Nicholas a different Glenn storyline, so would they also add this to his pile? If so, it may just make Glenn look worse for letting Nicholas continue to live. The trailer wants to make it seem like Rick is pointing his gun at Morgan, and they seem to want us to think Deanna Monroe is pushing for Morgan to take charge instead of Rick, but Rick and Morgan will probably end up on the same side, with Rick as leader. If they don’t give this exact gun-in-face moment to Nicholas, could they remix it with someone else?

Several shots (including Jessie hiding) also suggest a massive herd attack on Alexandria, which would fit with the comic book storyline — unlike the Morgan vs. Rick stuff. In the comic, after a standoff with The Scavengers (The Wolves seem like a TV remix) at the Alexandria gate, the noise draws a huge group of walkers and the Alexandria Safe-Zone is breached. By that point, Rick was fully in charge, with the leader (Douglas Monroe in the comics) going a bit mad. The TV show has changed so much — not only with Deanna losing both her husband and one of her sons, but also with the new twist of adding Zen Morgan to the mix — that it’s hard to know what might happen. (Will Carl still lose an eye or not?) There were shots of Enid in there, so we might get her backstory, along with whatever is happening outside the wall with Daryl. Neither Enid nor Daryl is even in the comic book, so they could do anything.

A ton of stuff will be coming out at Comic-Con, but here’s a portion of showrunner Scott Gimple’s vague Q&A with Entertainment Weekly:

Should we assume, then, that there are some other threats in season 6 in addition to the Wolves?
There are multiple threats, even in the first half of the season. And sort of different versions of threats we’ve seen before. The first three episodes are quite intense, and the cast and crew are — we just shot them out of a cannon directly into another cannon that we shot them out of again. The first three episodes are — we say every year, “Ah, it’s so crazy” and everything, and it has been crazy — but the first three episodes this year and the things that we’re doing are very big and very difficult, and we’re pushing people hard, and in some ways I think we’re going to be pushing the audience hard. I’m pretty excited and terrified about it.

“Walking Dead” trailers traditionally include footage from up to the first 5-6 episodes, since they are still filming the season and they usually get through the epic Episode 8 midseason finale in August. We’re now extra excited for those first three episodes, as well as the rest of the 16-ep season. Are you pumped?

“The Walking Dead” Season 6 starts Sunday, October 11 on AMC, with a 90-minute premiere.

  • Liam Hemsworth’s Bond With Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence Is Even Closer Than You Think

Comic-Con International 2015 - Day 1 Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, and Josh Hutcherson have been squad goals ever since the first “The Hunger Games” movie was released in 2012. And now, after finishing up “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” their bond is stronger than ever.

“We’ve always had such a close relationship with each other,” Hemsworth told Moviefone Contributing Editor Jessica Wedemeyer at this year’s Comic-Con. “We always got along. We always really enjoyed being around each other. We literally know everything about each other. These people know more about me than most people in the world — too much probably! It’ll be a lifelong friendship.”

When it comes to spending time together, the trio likes to keep things pretty casual. “We don’t do a lot — usually just sit around and talk a lot of bullsh*t, pretty much. There’s a lot of giggling and talking nonsense,” he said.

So after being thrust into the spotlight along with Lawrence and Hutcherson, does Hemsworth feel like his new friendships and job came with too big of a price? “I try not to regret anything in my life. I try to learn from whatever I do.”

Don’t worry though, if he does find himself feeling a little overwhelmed, he’s got a plan. “Any time I do feel that feeling of regret, I try to look at it from a subjective point of view and try to figure out what I can learn form that situation. You can’t change what’s happened. It’s happened, and as long as you move forward in a positive way, I think that’s kind of the best thing to do.”

“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” hits theaters November 20th.

  • SDCC: Ben Affleck in Talks to Direct, Star and Co-Write Solo ‘Batman’ Movie

Just as Comic-Con begins, so does a new era for The Dark Knight.

Batman v Superman” star Ben Affleck is reportedly in talks to cowrite a “Batman” standalone film with DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns, according to Deadline.

Affleck will also star as Batman and possibly direct, with the latter rumored to be a condition of his deal to don the cowl in “BvS” when he first signed on to that film in 2013.

Deadline also reports that Affleck and Johns, a popular DC Comics scribe, are already at work on a script that the team may finish by end of summer — before Affleck goes off in November to direct the 2016 crime thriller “Live By Night,” based on the novel by Dennis Lehane.

Affleck’s second appearance as the Caped Crusader won’t start shooting until after “Night” is finished, which means we won’t see a solo Batman film until at least 2018 or 2019. Deadline broke the story two days before Affleck and his “BvS” costars arrive for Warner Bros.’ epic Hall H presentation at Comic-Con Saturday.

Before becoming DC’s CCO, Johns was responsible for writing such popular and successful comics runs as “Green Lantern” and “Justice League.” This will mark Johns’ first feature writing credit.

“Batman v Superman” hits theaters March 25, 2016.
