    • ‘Alien: Romulus’ brought terror to the San Diego Comic-Con.
    • Director Fede Alvarez and his cast were in attendance.
    • The movie’s team brought Facehuggers to the presentation.

It’s always a challenge to stand out at a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con; but when you have the compelling terror of an ‘Alien’ movie and the resources of 20th Century Studios, you can afford to put on a show.

With journalists previously teased by a VHS tape begging up the idea of the panel weeks before, the Con event itself proved to be memorable, launched with flashing red lights and red smoke piercing the pre-show gloom and closing with a planted audience member stumbling on stage, attacked by a Facehugger (AKA the larval stage of the xenomorph aliens we love to hate), others of the creature scuttling across the stage and another person having an alien burst from his chest with a spray of fake blood.

Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn are among the main cast for the movie, and they were all present for the Comic-Con panel.

The actors talked about their roles and the experience shooting the movie, which blended practical and physical effects –– Fearn talked about not having to shoot “with tennis balls”, while Spaeny enthused about being enveloped by the huge practical sets.

What did we learn at the ‘Alien: Romulus’ Comic-Con panel?

Director Fede Alvarez, who wrote the script with regular collaborator Rodo Sayagues, answered the lion’s share of the questions, including those submitted by the likes of Ridley Scott (director of the original 1979 ‘Alien’ and a couple of more recent spin-offs, who is a producer on ‘Romulus’), Dan Trachtenberg (director of Predator movie ‘Prey’) and Guillermo del Toro (a filmmaker who surely needs little introduction).

Asked by del Toro about his approach to leading the design for the latest take on the xenomorph creature, he admitted it included lots of reading and looking through old films to make sure they honored what came before. “If you love it, it’s hard to f*** it up,” he said.

Trachtenberg asked who would win between a Predator and a Xenomorph, with Alvarez and his cast clear that the Xenomorphs would triumph.

Scott got two questions –– one about the themes of the new movie (“It’s called ‘Romulus’ because it’s really a story about siblinghood,” Alvarez said, explaining that he wants to explore more human connections in a way the original movies didn’t.

The other Scott query could almost have come from the fan Q&A section, grilling Alvarez on his favorite ‘Alien’ movie, with the proviso that he directed the original –– which Alvarez confirmed he loved the most (well, it wouldn’t do to be fired at this point).

Dotted through the panel was footage from the movie, including a chestburster scene that the director explained upfront had been edited differently to the final film version so as to preclude some spoilers. All the scenes shown from the movie had the audience screaming and cheering in equal measure.

When will ‘Alien: Romulus’ be in theaters?

The movie itself is due to unleash horror in cinemas on August 16th.

  • SDCC 2024: ‘Transformers One’ Panel

    • The ‘Transformers One’ Panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con featured casting news about Laurence Fishburne and Steve Buscemi.
    • Chris Hemsworth and Tyree Henry are among the leads.
    • ‘Toy Story 4’ director Josh Cooley made the new movie.

While this year’s outing of the San Diego Comic-Con has so far proved to be a relatively quiet one (at least until the likes of Marvel show up to offer tantalizing news tidbits), there was some new information about an animated movie that is garnering some positive buzz off the back of early screenings: ‘Transformers One’.

The movie, which stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key and Scarlett Johansson features the much-loved robots in disguise… but at a time when they were able to transform at all.

It kicked off one of the early presentation panels, and the actors (minus Johansson, who was busy on the new ‘Jurassic World’ film) were on hand alongside director Josh Cooley (‘Toy Story 4’) and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to debut some fresh footage and provide some new insight into the movie.

And the panel also offered up the latest trailer, which you can watch above.

The new movie is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

Hemsworth voices Orion Pax, who will become Autobot leader Optimus Prime, while Henry is D-16, the future Megatron. Key plays B-127, a chatty ‘bot who’ll later be known as Bumblebee, and Johansson is Elita-1.

The panel included word (or rather, confirmation) that Jon Hamm is playing Cybertron leader Sentinel Prime, with Laurence Fishburne taking the Morpheus-alike role of Alpha Prion.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was word that Steve Buscemi voices Starscream, who we know will become one of Megatron’s (usually) loyal lieutenants. In ‘Transformers One’, they’re in opposition, with Starscream proclaiming that “the idea of a unified Cybertron is a myth” –– though it’s clear D-16 is starting to have doubts about his alliances.

Chris Hemsworth at the Comic-Con 2022 'Transformers One' presentation.

Among the panel highlights were funny moments, including Hemsworth remarking that he and Henry –– who never shared a recording booth –– prepped to play best friends by sleeping in bunk beds.

Key, meanwhile (whose character is the comic relief for the movie), looked to lead the Hall H audience in a rendition of the ‘Transformers’ cartoon theme tune, only to find few takers. “Good, now we know who’s over 40,” he quipped.

This is what producer di Bonaventura had to say about the advantages of animation for a Transformers movie:

“If we did this as a live-action movie, it would probably cost $500M. What has been tricky in live-action is that every time a robot talks, it costs a lot of money. In animation, you can have them build out their character.”

And for Cooley, it was a chance to dig into the characters lore.

“Hasbro gave me the bible of ‘Transformers’, this Tolkien-length history –– so much to play with, a huge sandbox –– I wanted the feeling of what it was like to play with the toys as a kid, that feeling of nostalgia and joy trying to make these things work.”

When will ‘Transformers One’ be in theaters?

‘Transformers One’ will be released on September 20th.

The last few years have not been kind to San Diego’s huge celebration of all things pop culture, Comic-Con. Despite a high point in the early-mid 2000s where massive crowds showed up to hear about new developments in franchises such as ‘Twilight’ and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the view of the event as a premium launching point for new movies and TV shows has taken a hit more recently.

And the COVID pandemic, which saw the 2020 and 2021 versions of the event reduced to a sparse virtual shadow of its former self, didn’t help.

But while hopes were raised by a largely triumphant return last year (including the traditional big panel from Marvel announcing its upcoming slate and trotting out stars and creators to generate buzz), it appears that the biggest issue on Hollywood’s mind will now have an impact on which companies are bringing anything to the event.

    Writers’ strike delays

    Marvel Studios' 'Blade.'
    Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade.’

According to a new story in The Wrap, Marvel in particular has decided to make this a skip year, deciding not to bring any of its shows or movies to the huge Hall H space where it has traditionally been a highlight of the four-day event. It will still, however, have a presence on the trade show floor of the Con.

While the studio has not shown up before (or had a reduced presence due to it saving some big reveals for parent company Disney’s own D23 event, which falls after the July dates of the Con), the writers’ strike is reportedly behind the new move.

Movies such as ‘Blade’ and ‘Thunderbolts’, along with TV series including ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ are all being delayed, and all the various release date shifts are impacting what will be worth showing off.

And it’s not just the writers –– acting union SAG-AFTRA has yet to make its own deal with the studios, and that could mean talent on strike, unavailable to take the stage since they a forbidden from promotional duties while engaged in industrial action. Which would put a dampener even on projects Marvel could conceivably promote, including ‘Captain Marvel’ sequel ‘The Marvels’.

    Other companies?

Marvel is not alone in this decision, as The Wrap additionally mentions that Universal and HBO are among the other names mentioned as pondering whether to show up this year.

HBO is perhaps understandable, since its own parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery is on a serious cost-cutting run (including news that it is exploring licensing big HBO series for viewers to watch on Netflix to drum up extra revenue) and would not want to splash the cash to bring talent to the Con when hotel accommodation and other expenses would be extremely high. And, like Marvel, the companies are also seeing projects being pushed back because of the strike.

Comic-Con is still scheduled to run between Thursday July 20 and Sunday July 23, but it sounds like its impact will be smaller this year.

    Helen Sloan/HBO

The highly anticipated “Game of Thrones” panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 will look different than expected.

A handful of key players have backed out of the event. HBO has updated its list of panelists, and noticeably absent are showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, actors Iain Glen (Jorah Mormont) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei), and director Miguel Sapochnik, as Variety reports. HBO chalked the changes up to production and schedule conflicts.

The good news is that there are still plenty of panelists set to participate. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Conleth Hill (Varys), and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark) are all on the list. The “Game of Thrones” Twitter account promoted their presence in a tweet Wednesday.

This will be a last hurrah of sorts. The eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones” concluded in May, so the event is bound to be bittersweet. The panel is set for Friday, July 19 at 5:30 p.m. in SDCC’s Hall H.

Marvel Returning to Comic-Con’s Hall H in 2019: Report

    Marvel

Our cinematic futures may become clearer during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, with Marvel returning to Hall H for the first time since 2017.

Deadline reports Marvel will return to Hall H after skipping last year, to maintain a veil of secrecy about the fate of the characters after the ending of “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The big, looming question now is: What will Marvel bring?

The studio has been tight-lipped about its lineup post-“Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Obviously, more Marvel movies are coming — they’ve booked the first weekends in May and November 2020 for untitled projects. It’s possible Marvel boss Kevin Feige will reveal those titles and its slate for the next couple of years.

The most likely footage to be shown may come from the standalone “Black Widow” movie starring Scarlett Johansson. Hall H will go nuts if the star makes an appearance with fellow cast members David Harbour and Rachel Weisz.

There may also be an introduction of the cast of “The Eternals,” including Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, and Richard Madden.

And Marvel may roll out footage from its upcoming Disney+ series, like “Loki.”

New ‘DuckTales’ Comic-Con Sizzle Reel Teases a Return to ‘TaleSpin’

    Disney Channel

Comic-Con dropped a “DuckTales” sizzle reel that fans will flip for.

In the video below, exclusive to IGN, there’s a reference to Cape Suzette, the setting of the animated fan-favorite series “TaleSpin.” (This reference is a strong hint that we’ll also likely see characters from “TaleSpin” crossover into the new “DuckTales” series. Can’t. Wait.)

Also glimpsed in the sizzle reel is a cool reference to “Darkwing Duck,” so, yeah, get excited, Disney fans.
All-time MVP villain Magica de Spell is introduced as well,  this time voiced by former “Doctor Who” companion Catherine Tate. Fans get to see Magica (finally) in her non-shadow form.

In more “DuckTales” news, Entertainment Weekly revealed the return of the Three Caballeros to “DuckTales.” Check ’em out below:

Quick background on this trio: they starred in two “package films” that were birthed out of Walt Disney’s peacemaking trip to South and Central America during World War II. They can currently be seen at the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot.

  • ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Season 4B Trailer Brings Storm of Zombies

    fear-the-walking-dead
    AMC

Call it Hurricane Zombie. That’s what the survivors of “Fear the Walking Dead” will face when Season 4B returns to AMC in August.

At Comic-Con in San Diego, AMC debuted the trailer for the second half of the season, which was rocked by controversy over star Kim Dickens’ unexpected (and unasked for) exit from the show in June’s Season 4A finale.

The trailer gives us glimpses of Alicia Clark (Alycia Debnam-Carey), Morgan Jones (Lennie James), Luciana (Danay García),John Dorie (Garret Dillahunt), Althea (Maggie Grace), and June (Jenna Elfman) as they battle a raging storm and the raging undead.

Season 4 has already brought a number of major changes to the show. Original cast member Frank Dillane’s Nick Clark was also killed off in episode 3 upon the actor’s request. Then, Dickens’ Madison Clark, ostensibly the lead of the show, was killed off. But in this case, Dickens disagreed with the storytelling choice. and a backlash ensued among fans.

Showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg defended their decision, saying, “A lot of the back half of the season will be about, ‘How do we exist together? Who are we to each other? What do we do going forward? How do we carry on what Madison lived for? How do we maintain hope in this often bleak world?’ There’s a lot of things these people will be wrestling with. Those are stories that we’re excited to tell, and we’re really looking forward to hearing the audience’s reaction when we do tell them.”

“Fear the Walking Dead” Season 4B premieres August 12 on AMC.

  • An Uncut Version of ‘Deadpool 2’ Will Screen at Comic-Con

    20th Century Fox

The Merc With a Mouth is getting an extended encore at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, with a special “uncut” version of “Deadpool 2” set to screen at the fan event later this month.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the sequel — alternatively titled “Deadpool 2: Uncut” and the “Super Duper $@%!#& Cut” — will be the same version that audiences can see when they pick up the film’s Blu-ray or digital release on August 21. But fans who secure a coveted Comic-Con ticket can watch it an entire month earlier, on Saturday, July 21.

The exact logistics of the event are still a bit unclear (EW reports that both 10 p.m. PST and 9:30 p.m. PST are listed as start times for the event), but you’re going to need either a Saturday or weekend-long Comic-Con badge in order to buy tickets. The lucky few who do score a seat at the screening will be treated to “15 minutes of brand-new action and jokes lovingly inserted throughout,” per EW.

Fox will also host a “Deadpool” panel earlier in the day, featuring titular star Ryan Reynolds and some unnamed “pals.” The official listing for the event tells fans to “Expect dirty jokes, broken fourth walls, maybe some spandex, and real, live unicorns!* *Panel may not actually include mythical creatures.”

More information about both events can be found on the official Comic-Con schedule here.
