  • WB TV Reveals Comic-Con Hall H Slate Featuring ‘Riverdale,’ ‘Castle Rock,’ ‘Supernatural’

“Riverdale” will be temporarily relocating to southern California: Warner Bros. Television revealed its lineup this week for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and the hit CW series is set for its own splashy panel in Hall H.

Though the show — which just wrapped its second season — has had an annual Comic-Con presence since before its January 2017 premiere, this will be the first time it’s featured in the hallowed Hall H at the annual fan event. The panel will include what’s being dubbed as a “special video presentation” (perhaps including footage from the upcoming third season?), as well as a Q&A with the cast and crew.

Other notable standalone events scheduled for Hall H include a presentation and Q&A for long-running sci-fi show “Supernatural,” and the world premiere screening of Hulu’s new J.J. Abrams-produced Stephen King anthology series, “Castle Rock,” which will also be followed by a Q&A. All of the CW superhero shows — including “Supergirl,” “Arrow,” and “The Flash” — are also set to be featured, as is “The Big Bang Theory,” which airs on parent network CBS.

The full schedule of WB TV’s Comic-Con 2018 panels and presentations can be found here. The event runs from July 18 through July 22.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Westworld’ Are Skipping Comic-Con

Yet another major pop culture player is foregoing a San Diego Comic-Con panel this year, with HBO announcing that neither “Game of Thrones” nor “Westworld” will be present at the annual fan event.

In a statement, the premium cable outlet explained that the omission of its two biggest series from Comic-Con was a purely logistical choice, noting that “production schedules and air dates” for the splashy series conflicted with the July event.

Here are HBO’s remarks in full:

“Due to production schedules and air dates for Game of Thronesand Westworld, these series will not be presented at San Diego Comic-Con this summer. HBO has a longstanding relationship with SDCC, and we are very grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic response over the years. We look forward to returning in the future.”

HBO has offered a “Game of Thrones” panel every year since the show’s premiere. Skipping it now, ahead of the launch of the show’s eighth and final season in 2019, seems more than a little anti-climactic. And while “Westworld” only made its Comic-Con debut last year, it seemed by all accounts poised for another buzzy panel in 2018, following all of its season two shakeups.

Of course, HBO isn’t the only notable name that won’t be presenting a panel in Hall H this year: Marvel is also passing on that noteworthy annual event, instead simply offering fans a floor exhibit honoring 10 years of the MCU. But according to Deadline, HBO won’t even be doing that, skipping any sort of Comic-Con presence entirely (and that includes a rumored sneak peek at one of the potential “Thrones” spinoffs). Bummer.

Regardless of those glaring absences, Comic-Con will be overflowing with other offerings — more information can be found here. The event runs from July 19 through July 22.

  • Sorry, Marvel Fans: The Studio Won’t Hold a Comic-Con Hall H Panel This Year

Marvel fans may want to rethink booking their tickets for this year’s Comic-Con: The studio is skipping its annual panel presentation at Hall H.

That’s what several media outlets are reporting after speaking with none other than Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige, who told reporters from both Vulture and Collider that the MCU would still have a presence at SDCC to celebrate its 10th anniversary. But there won’t be any splashy cast reunions or big-time movie reveals at a fan-packed panel event.

“Kevin Feige just told me that while Marvel will still have a floor presence, they’re skipping the usual Hall H panel to let the dust settle from INFINITY WAR,” Vulture’s Kyle Buchanan tweeted.

Collider offered a few more details from Feige, including the reminder that this isn’t the first time that Marvel will be missing from Hall H (they also skipped the panel after the first “Avengers” flick in 2012, as well as in 2015). And according to the exec, the studio purposefully wants to avoid giving out any information about its upcoming slate of flicks — including not proving the names of several untitled films scheduled to hit theaters in 2020 until after “Avengers 4” is released in May of 2019.

Skipping a flashy Comic-Con panel is certainly one way of ensuring absolute secrecy about its future releases, though as fans noted on Twitter, it’s a bit odd, considering the studio has been promoting the 10th year of the MCU so heavily and seemed primed for a big, celebratory Hall H event. And now, there won’t be any more “Avengers” panels at Comic-Con, since “Avengers 4” will come out well before SDCC 2019 (currently scheduled for July).

While this news may be disappointing for fans, at least they can comfort themselves with the knowledge that “Avengers: Infinity War” is coming out on Friday (or Thursday night, for those who bought tickets for advance showings).

  • ‘Marvel’s The Punisher’ Panel Cut From New York Comic-Con After Las Vegas Shooting

In response of Sunday’s horrific Las Vegas shooting, there’s been a change to the New York Comic-Con 2017 lineup: “Marvel’s The Punisher” has been pulled.

Marvel and Netflix have decided to cancel the series’ scheduled panel, which was set for Oct. 7. The companies announced the move in a joint statement Wednesday, sharing that the decision was made “after careful consideration.” Per their statement, they concluded that “it wouldn’t be appropriate … to participate.”

The cancellation makes sense, given that “The Punisher” follows Frank Castle, a fictional vigilante who leaves bullets and bodies in his wake, based on the brutal trailers we’ve seen to this point. Any previews that might have been released during Comic-Con could very well have poked at still-raw emotional wounds. Fortunately, the companies were cognizant of that fact.

“We are stunned and saddened by this week’s senseless act in Las Vegas. … Our thoughts continue to be with the victims and those affected by this tragedy,” the statement read in part.

There is no word yet as to whether the Las Vegas tragedy will impact the series’ premiere date. Netflix has not yet announced the date “The Punisher” will debut, but Season 1 is due out before the end of the year.

  • Lupita Nyong’o Did Comic-Con Right With Power Rangers Cosplay

Women In Film 2017 Crystal + Lucy Awards Presented By Max Mara And BMW - ArrivalsCosplay isn’t just for fans, because, you know, stars — they’re just like us!

Lupita Nyong’o was at San Diego Comic-Con to talk about her role in Marvel’s upcoming “Black Panther,” but she also took advantage of the chance to enjoy it as a fan. The Oscar-nominated actress did so by finding the perfect way to blend in: cosplay. Dressed as the Pink Power Ranger, she wandered — and danced — around the massive annual convention.

Nyong’o shared a video of her antics, writing, “Did you see me at Comic Con?!” as the caption to a video of her enthusiastically taking in the sights incognito.

Hats off to Nyong’o for cosplay well done. Next year, she should go as her “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” character Maz Kanata and see if she can still pull it off without being recognized.

  • Chadwick Boseman Confirms Black Panther’s ‘Vital Role’ in ‘Infinity War’

Black PantherKing T’Challa ruled at Comic-Con.

Marvel’s upcoming film “Black Panther” was one of the major success stories of Comic-Con International, with preview footage from the movie prompting a riotous standing ovation from the fan-filled crowd. Equally jubilant was the all-star cast of the film, who were getting their first look, too, and the actors’ enthusiasm was led by star Chadwick Boseman, who seemed nearly overwhelmed by the glimpse at director Ryan Coogler‘s vision.

Moviefone caught up with Boseman immediately after the big reveal and, still reeling from what he’d seen, he offered a glimpse at the Black Panther’s role in both his solo film and the forthcoming “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Moviefone: This is obviously something that’s been huge and looming in your life for a while. When you finally get to show it to these fans, who are absolutely dying to see it, how do you feel?

Chadwick Boseman: Honestly, I wasn’t even worried about them, because I enjoyed it myself! I think I felt just like they did: Crazy!

What was the best part of this version of T’Challa, to evolve him from how you’ve already played him in “Civil War”? What got you excited about this story?

In “Civil War,” he had a one-track mind. He obviously had a turn at the end of the movie where you get to see that there’s a sense of principle, that there’s a culture that he comes from that would have him make the decision that he makes at the end of “Civil War.”

You could just see where that comes from now, in this movie, and see him wrestle with those ideas of principle as even more things get thrown at him in terms of that belief system. So I think it’s more so than all of the fighting and the suit and all that, it was just being able to explore the culture that he comes from.

What did you love about the world of Wakanda in the film?

I think there’s a sense of the old and the new combined, in a way. You get a sense of appreciation for tradition, and, at the same time, a need to expand, to modernize him, to have most advanced technology or knowledge that there is. Those two things don’t have to conflict with each other.

This film’s cast is as good as it gets. As an actor, what’s the experience been like to work with this many great performers?

Honestly, when everybody’s good, you don’t think about it. You only worry about it when somebody is not going to be able to bring it, and you have your moments where you’re like, “Oh, that was amazing. That was good.” But you honestly just get lost in what you’re doing. You’re able to do that easier.

In “Infinity War,” does Black Panther play a vital role, and who did you have the most fun working with that you hadn’t worked with before?

It’s a vital role — definitely a vital role! And I think [Mark] Ruffalo. Ruffalo is the main person that I felt like we hit if off and had fun, and I hadn’t worked with him before. In fact, when I met him, it felt like I had already met him. That would be the name I’ll say. I can’t say more than that.

  • ‘Infinity War’ Director Talks ‘Surprise’ Duo, ‘Unprecedented’ MCU Task

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Comic Con PosterThe roof of Comic-Con International’s Hall H nearly exploded from the unbridled excitement generated by a second unveiling the still-not-public sneak peek footage from “Avengers: Infinity War” that took D23 by storm.

    So, no pressure, Joe Russo.

Immediately after the presentation, Russo — who, with his brother Anthony, are the filmmakers at the helm of the forthcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe mega-crossover that unites the superhero community in a battle against Thanos’s bid to conquer the cosmos — told Moviefone he was feeling energized by the wildly positive response to the footage, especially given that he and Anthony are just about to start work on the follow-up installment.

And he offered a hint at who he suspects will be the breakout superhero comedy duo of “Infinity War.”

Moviefone: The response that you’ve gotten here and at D23, what has it meant to you to see the enthusiasm the “Infinity War” footage has provoked?

Joe Russo: It’s incredible, because oddly, it happened to have fallen, both D23 and Comic-Con, in between the two movies that we’re working on. It’s hard making these films, physically hard. It’s emotionally demanding, it’s psychologically demanding. To see that reaction, right before we’re about to start the second movie, is a great burst of energy to carry us to the next film.

You’ve gotten the opportunity to work with just about everybody in the MCU so far. What was the thrill of experiencing the new people that you got to work with? Did anybody stand out as, like, that was way better than I expected?

Everybody brings incredible energy. Marvel does an incredible job of casting. I joke that the cast is like “The Poseidon Adventure” meets “Towering Inferno.” It’s that big. Everyone who comes in is a movie star. Movie stars are day-playing on this film. They’ll come in and do one day’s worth of work.

So you’re just constantly surprised every day by the quality of talent you have in front of you. I’ll just pick up the call sheet and laugh, because I go, “Oh my God, this person’s coming in for one or two days, and they’re one of my favorite actors.”

These huge Marvel movies are challenging to make in any circumstance, but this is that big culmination movie, the epic that everything’s been building toward. What were the specific challenges of that for you?

It’s trying to pull all the different threads together, all the characters so that you have continuity in narrative, that there’s a flow, that you are paying off everything that’s been set up. So, it’s been a hell of a task.

Thankfully, we have incredible partners in [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, who wrote “Winter Soldier” and “Civil War,” and are writing both “Avengers” scripts for us. We have great partners in Marvel. We’ve worked with the same crew now on four movies, so it’s like a family. So we have an incredible amount of support.

The hardest part is tying all the different threads together. It’s kind of unprecedented. I can’t think of a movie that has this many stories that are leading into it. It literally took us a year in a room in front of a computer screen trying to figure it out.

Are there any two characters you can tease that were especially fun to see together for the first time?

Oh boy! I like the dynamic between Thor and Star-Lord. I think it’s going to surprise people. It’s very funny. People saw it today, what Taika [Waititi] did with the tone on “Ragnarok,” bringing that tone and energy from the “Thor” world into the “Guardians” universe, and you get a really combustable chemistry and some pretty funny stuff.Star-Lord and Thor

  • First Look at ‘Westworld’ Season 2 Ups the Body Count

Even though “Westworld” Season 2 isn’t due to premiere till 2018, HBO is already teasing us with new footage.

The premium network debuted a first-look trailer during San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, and there is already more carnage, including a tiger corpse. That is not the only creepy part; blood pops up multiple times in the preview — on paper, on the floor, and on people. Not that that’s a surprise, of course.

Since the trailer comes so far in advance, the footage is fairly limited. However, we did get interesting glimpses, including of Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) gunning down people from the back of a horse as well as the Man in Black’s blood-spattered face.

“Westworld” Season 1 drew 22 Emmy nominations this year, so Season 2 will look to create similar success. Settle in, though, because it’s going to be a long wait till the show returns in 2018.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Season 2 Trailer Brings ‘Thriller’ to Hawkins

Two pop culture sensations have come together — “Stranger Things” and “Thriller.”

Netflix’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation on Saturday came with a brand new trailer for Season 2 of its hit sci-fi horror series in which the Michael Jackson song is prominently featured. However, with all the intrigue the preview offers, “Thriller” wasn’t necessary to capture our interest. Not at all.

The footage returns us to Hawkins, Indiana, where arcade games aren’t enough to distract Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) from a lingering darkness. Creepy, bizarre things are happening, and the poor kid is struggling even with the support of his friends Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo). We don’t know what the culprit is yet, of course — that’s what Season 2 is for.

Meanwhile, we don’t see anything of everyone’s favorite waffle lover Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) initially. Don’t worry, though; she pops up at the end, bloody nose and all.

“Stranger Things” Season 2 hits Netflix on Oct. 27.

  • New ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Trailer Is as Philosophical as It Is Action-Heavy

The more “Star Trek: Discovery” footage we see, the more we like it.

With San Diego Comic-Con in full swing on Saturday, CBS debuted a new trailer, and it teases what appears to be a compelling and complex story. Right from the start, the words of Lt. Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) will get you thinking.

“All life is born from chaos,” she says. “The world doesn’t always adhere to logic. Sometimes down is up, and sometimes when you’re lost, you’re found.”

Those ideas come into play, especially toward the end when we get Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs) is talking to her. He says that though she chose to do “the right thing,” she “helped start a war.” We can’t wait to see how that comes about.

    Are you intrigued yet?

“Star Trek: Discovery” premieres Sept. 24 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS as well as the network’s streaming service, CBS All Access.
