Elisabeth Moss, Benedict Cumberbatch to Star in Jane Campion’s ‘The Power of the Dog’

    Sundance/Showtime

Elisabeth Moss and Benedict Cumberbatch will make one Emmy-winning power couple in Jane Campion’s next film, “The Power of the Dog,” according to Variety.

The project reteams Moss with the creator of the crime thriller series “Top of the Lake,” for which the actress won a Golden Globe.

“The Power of the Dog” is an adaptation of the Thomas Savage novel, which tells the story of wealthy Montana brothers Phil (Cumberbatch) and George Burbank. Together, they own the biggest ranch in their Montana valley. When George secretly marries local widow Rose (Moss), an angry Phil wages a relentless war to destroy her and her son.

“‘The Power of the Dog’ is a sublime novel that deserves a life on the big screen. I couldn’t stop thinking about the story, it really haunted me. The themes of masculinity, nostalgia and betrayal are an intoxicating mix,” Campion said in a statement.

“ It will be the first time I’ve worked with a male lead, which is exciting.”

Cumberbatch is just coming off a cameo in “Avengers: Endgame” and HBO’s “Brexit.” Moss recently appeared in the horror hit “Us” and will debut the third season of Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” in June.

  • Sidelined ‘The Current War’ Getting New Cut, August Release

Sidelined ‘The Current War’ Getting New Cut, August Release

    101 Studios

The Current War,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison, Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla and Michael Shannon as George Westinghouse,  is finally seeing the light of the day.

The film had an disastrous debut at the Toronto Film Fest in 2017 and never saw a theatrical release due to the collapse of The Weinstein Company.

Now, with a new cut and a new distributor, 101 Studios, the film will be hitting theaters this August.

As director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon told Deadline, “It had been accepted to Toronto based on an early cut and then came the rush to finish in time. I knew in my heart, and every fiber of my body was saying, it’s not ready… We rushed the mix, ADR, sound.” He said he came out of the festival feeling, “like an idiot. I went in fearless and then suddenly you realize you are a casualty, a footnote.”

Then Harvey Weinstein (who used to be dubbed “Harvey Scissorhands” for his penchant for drastically cutting films), came up with his own edit. If not for the scandalous revelations that ended Weinstein’s career and caused the demise of his company, the film would have been released with Weinstein’s more drastic edit.

Instead, with bad scenes trimmed, a new score, and some new footage — not to mention 101 Studios paying off the film’s debt — it’s ready to be seen.

“Everything missing is there now, including the right pacing that escalates the tension between these two men,” Gomez-Rejon explained. “The heart of the film is restored: Edison’s relationship with his wife (Tuppence Middleton), and the explanation of her fatal illness and what it did to him.”

He added that “Westinghouse has been humanized without making him a saint” and that “there are new scenes with Tesla, who was never meant to be a lead character but now you see his genius and vulnerability… he gives heart and clarity to the clash between these two men and what drives them to go to such dark places.”

If this all sounds familiar, you know your inventors very well. Or you recently watched the 2010 “Drunk History” episode, which starred John C. Reilly as Tesla and Crispin Glover as Edison battling over AC vs DC current.

The “Good Omens” cast just keeps getting better. The newest addition is Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Academy Award-winning actor has signed on to voice Satan in the Amazon series, as creator Neil Gaiman announced Wednesday. He revealed the news during a TCA event, and the “Good Omens” team later joked in a video about “taking a chance” on the “up-and-comer.”

Cumberbatch comes to the role as anything but an up-and-comer. He has not not only starred in a number of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, he plays the titular character in the acclaimed crime drama series “Sherlock.” He also recently starred in the miniseries “Patrick Melrose,” and some of his other film credits include 2015’s “Black Mass,” and 2013’s “12 Years a Slave” and “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

In “Good Omens,” Cumberbatch joins a number of big names. The show’s cast includes David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Anna Maxwell Martin, Josie Lawrence, Adria Arjona, Jon Hamm, Jack Whitehall, Nick Offerman, Michael McKean, Miranda Richardson, and Frances McDormand. Based on Gaiman’s 1990 novel written with the late Terry Pratchett, it centers on an angel (Sheen) and a demon (Tennant) as the Apocalypse and Final Judgment near.

“Good Omens” premieres  May 31 on Amazon Prime Video.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch Makes His ‘Brexit’ in HBO Movie Trailer

Benedict Cumberbatch Makes His ‘Brexit’ in HBO Movie Trailer

    HBO

Brexit, 2016’s other shocking political event, is getting its own movie.

HBO released the first trailer for “Brexit,” which stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dominic Cummings, the man who led the Vote Leave campaign resulting in the U.K. voting to exit the European Union.

“Everyone knows who won,” Cumberbatch says in the trailer. “But not everyone knows how.”

Cummings uses cunning to “hack the political system” by using social media to stoke fears about race and immigration and encourage a desire “to return to a time when we knew our place, when things made sense, fictional or not.” Sounds somewhat similar to the other big political event of 2016.

Rory Kinnear also stars as Craig Oliver, Prime Minister David Cameron’s director of communications and head of the Remain campaign.

“Brexit” premieres Saturday, January 19, at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Who should play Dracula? Is it elementary?

Sherlock” creators and “Doctor Who” writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are working on a “Dracula” miniseries with three 90-minute installments. The Bram Stoker adaptation will air on the BBC in the U.K. and Netflix elsewhere around the world.

Here’s a tease from Netflix (via Variety):

“In Transylvania in 1897, the blood drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.”

Moffat and Gatiss (who also plays Mycroft Holmes in “Sherlock”) shared their own tease:

“There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”

Here’s more from Charlotte Moore, BBC director of content:

“Genius duo Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss turn their attentions to Dracula for unmissable event television on BBC One.”

And now Larry Tanz, VP of content acquisition at Netflix:

“We can’t wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC.”

Maybe it’s too obvious with the “Sherlock” connection and “Doctor Strange” cape, but screw it — Benedict Cumberbatch should play Count Dracula. If you disagree, come up with your own suggestions.

  • ‘Avengers’ Directors Praise Benedict Cumberbatch for ‘Monitoring Tom Holland’ Spoilers

‘Avengers’ Directors Praise Benedict Cumberbatch for ‘Monitoring Tom Holland’ Spoilers

    Avengers: Infinity War
    Marvel Studios

You don’t need to see 14 million possible futures to realize at some point Tom Holland is going to spoil a major “Avengers” moment.

It has already happened – multiple times. Sometimes he even spoils his co-stars’ movies.

But that’s why Benedict Cumberbatch is a true superhero. Because Tom Holland would’ve shared even MORE spoilers if Doctor Strange weren’t there to shut Spider-Man down at key moments.

Avengers: Infinity War” directors Anthony and Joe Russo are now promoting the film’s Digital release, and upcoming August 14 Blu-ray release. They were asked about Tom Holland in the film, and then about Tom Holland outside of the film.

ET reporter: “How do you feel that Tom Holland spent the entire press tour spoiling aspects of the movie over and over?”

Joe Russo [laughs]: “What are you gonna do? You know. He’s the nicest guy in the world. So you can never be punitive towards Tom Holland.”

Reporter: “People made supercuts of it, which was my favorite thing.”

Joe Russo: “Of everything he spoiled? Was it like 15 minutes long?”

Reporter: “It was him and Benedict Cumberbatch, and Benedict Cumberbatch just being like [blocking Tom Holland to shut him up.]”

Joe Russo: “By the way, Benedict is a great partner for him on the press tour. Because Benedict is actually very good at dancing around spoilers — and monitoring Tom Holland.”

    Anthony Russo: “That’s hard work.”

    Joe Russo: “It is.”

Yes, here’s the supercut in question:

Watch the full ET video for a lot more from the Russos, including their take on all the “Hot Thanos” thirst:

We can probably expect more Tom Holland spoilers from “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which is now filming, and “Avengers 4,” which comes out next May.

  • Benedict Cumberbatch’s 2018 Emmys Nom Marks a Milestone, and He’s ‘Humbled and So Appreciative’

    Benedict Cumberbatch in Patrick Melrose
    Showtime

Now that the 2018 Emmy nominations have been announced, there are a lot of people in the entertainment industry who have something to celebrate, and Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely one of them.

Not only did the actor earn a nod for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for his role in “Patrick Melrose” on Thursday, he reached an impressive milestone. Cumberbatch is now is now tied for the second-most nominations ever in that category. He is currently holding down the second slot with late actor and director Laurence Olivier.

The official “Patrick Melrose” Twitter account made note of the milestone in a tweet and congratulated its star.

The account later shared a statement from Cumberbatch, and not surprisingly, the actor is thrilled to have been recognized. He said:

This is wonderful! Getting to play this role was reward enough and now to be recognized with this nomination makes me feel humbled and so appreciative. And I’m thrilled for my talented colleagues who were honored with our other nominations for their superb work on Patrick Melrose. And we are all eternally grateful to the brilliant Edward St. Aubyn whose unparalleled prose was our inspiration. I hope this recognition brings an even wider audience to both the series and the books.

In total, Cumberbatch has been nominated for six Emmys, all in the same category. He’s gotten a nod every year since 2012, save for 2015, and five of the noms were for “Sherlock.” So far, he’s won once, for “Sherlock: His Last Vow,” in 2014. We’ll see if he can add to his collection in September.

The 2018 Emmys air live on Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

  • ‘Mowgli’ Trailer: Andy Serkis Tells a Darker Version of ‘The Jungle Book’

Motion-capture master Andy Serkis is tackling a familiar subject with his next project, “Mowgli,” an adaptation of Rudyard Kipling novel “The Jungle Book.” But as the actor-director explains, his film will be decidedly different from the more lighthearted versions that most moviegoers know.

The first trailer for the live-action/CGI hybrid is a visual feast, featuring impressive effects that bring the film’s animal cast to life. Those creatures are portrayed in painstaking detail thanks to motion-capture performances from some high-profile humans, including Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Naomie Harris, and Serkis himself. And newcomer Rohan Chand is a standout as the titular mancub.

As viewers can no doubt tell from the trailer, “Mowgli” isn’t Disney’s “Jungle Book” (neither the 1967 animated version, nor the 2016 CGI/live-action remake), differentiating itself by adhering more closely to the original Kipling source material. As Serkis notes of his flick in an accompanying featurette, “There’s no singing or dancing by the animals, that’s for sure.”

Part of the director’s mission with “Mowgli” was to “shatter … preconceptions” about the story, Serkis said. Based on this first trailer, it looks like he’s well on his way to achieving that goal.

“Mowgli” is due in theaters on October 19.

  • ‘Patrick Melrose’ Trailer Makes Benedict Cumberbatch Lose His Mind (in an Eyepatch)

Benedict Cumberbatch trades in his “Sherlock Holmes” hat and “Doctor Strange” cape for an eyepatch and snazzy suit in the first trailer for “Patrick Melrose.”

The actor also executive-produced the Showtime limited series, which is based on the novels by Edward St. Aubyn. The official synopsis describes it as an “acerbic and fearless look at the protagonist’s harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood to his remarkable survival as an adult.”

Patrick’s life has its dark moments, from an abusive father to cocaine and heroin use, but he’s also a bitingly witty rogue who skewers the upper class society in which he moves.

Cumberbatch has been busy lately. He just headlined the PBS Masterpiece TV movie “The Child in Time” and joins all the other Marvel heroes later this month in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

“Patrick Melrose” also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hugo Weaving, Anna Madeley, Blythe Danner, Allison William. The five-episode run begins May 12.
