    • Disney, as expected, went big on Pixar and Marvel.
    • The likes of ‘Deadpool’, ‘Inside Out 2’ and more were showcased.
    • ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ also showed footage.

Disney might not be enjoying quite the same cinematic dominance as it once did, but it still has some heavy hitters thanks to the likes of ‘Avatar’, ‘Star Wars’ and more.

Before the main presentation, we were treated to a PSA from no less than Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their ‘Deadpool and Wolverine‘ outfits, reminding the audience not to silence cellphones (it included a skit about Deadpool trying to spoil Marvel’s upcoming Avengers movie ‘Secret Wars’, but being interrupted by a ringing phone, leading to a filthy rant.)

Disney Co-Chair Alan Bergman kicked things off by saying that while every movie can’t be on the level of ‘Avatar’, but that the company continues to invest in event movies. A timeline on screen certainly attested to that, with confirmations of the various ‘Avatar’, Marvel and other titles.

    And talking of event movies…

First up was the next generation of the ‘Apes’ franchise, which has the unenviable task of following the Matt Reeves films.

Set decades after those movies, Wes Ball’s new effort is focused on the young ape known as Noah, and a couple of footage clips looked truly impressive –– Weta’s effects team once more working wonders on the motion capture apes.

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ is in theaters on May 10th, so not too long to wait now.

Next up was Pixar’s next big sequel…

    Inside Out 2

Amy Poehler at Disney's 2024 CinemaCon Presentation.

The return to the world of a young girl’s head has been a controversial one so far, with several of the voice cast deciding not to return after low pay offers.

But Amy Poehler is back as main character Joy, here confronting some new emotions as her charge Riley enters the tween/teenaged stage.

Poehler was present to introduce roughly 35 minutes from the start of the film and enthuse about how much Joy means to her.

As you might expect from Pixar, the footage went over very well, packed full of emotional power. (The likes of Maya Hawke, Ayo Edebiri and Paul Walter Hauser are among the new voices for this one.)

‘Inside Out 2’ will be out on June 14th.

And so we leave the sweet animation world for somewhere very different…

Marvel: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘ and more

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige at Disney's 2024 CinemaCon Presentation.
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige at Disney’s 2024 CinemaCon Presentation. Photo: Disney.

Kevin Feige walked on stage to talk about upcoming Marvel output. In keeping with Disney’s new mandate of quality over quantity, there is only one main movie from the MCU gang this year.

Feige cracked that they had Deadpool design a popcorn bucket to tie-in with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and can’t wait for us to… experience it. The mind shudders.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be with us on July 26th.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

Feige moved on to future movies. He dropped word that the ‘Thunderbolts’ movie is actually titled ‘Thunderbolts*’ and that the asterisk will be explained at some point soon. That movie will be with us on May 5th, 2025.
Then it was time to look further –– Feige mentioned that his team is developing two of their movies to shoot with IMAX cameras, including ‘The Fantastic Four’, which will finally kick off production in a couple of months.

Anthony Mackie and Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige at Disney's 2024 CinemaCon Presentation.
(L to R) Anthony Mackie and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige at Disney’s 2024 CinemaCon Presentation. Photo: Disney.

The Marvel boss moved on to ‘Captain America: Brave New World‘, citing the influence of ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’. He described the movie thus far as fast-paced and grounded and focused on Sam Wilson.

With that, Anthony Mackie took the stage, to a salute from Feige –– “you should always salute your captain.” Mackie was to show the audience a clip. Cut the check!

The footage has Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross –– who is now President –– telling Sam Wilson that he wants him to help rebuild the Avengers. There’s also a moment where a mind- controlled former super-soldier Isiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) tries to kill the Prez.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’ arrives on February 14th next year.

    38PIIqJ72BWyVUfWZQqug4

And in case you thought Team Marvel didn’t somehow find time to hype ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ one more time, director Shawn Levy closed out the company’s section of the Disney presentation with 9 minutes from the movie.

As could have been predicted, the ‘Deadpool’ footage is chaotic, funny and meta. We won’t give away too much here but suffice to say it’s everything you might be hoping (or fearing), including a shot of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor crying over Wade Wilson’s body. (“That happens in the distant future”, our hero is told.)

Hey! Talking of the future, next up…

    Alien: Romulus

The new entry in the ‘Alien’ franchise comes from Fede Alvarez, and if you’ve seen the first teaser, you know it’s very much in the horror mode.

Nine minutes of footage was screened for the audience. It was largely a scene featuring a legion of involved a series of small Facehuggers attacking scientists in a cryo Lab. One of the creatures manages to swim like a shark through some water and escape the lab. As the clip ends, many Facehuggers escape and start filling the ship…

We also see a scene of an alien explosively birthing itself from the chest of a human victim, all while the ship it is aboard is crashing though the walls of a giant structure.

‘Alien: Romulus’ heads to theaters on August 16th.

From strange creatures to strange filmmaking…

    Kinds of Kindness

Fresh of Oscar victory (and box office success), the Searchlight team arrived to promote Yorgos Lanthimos’ next collaboration with stars Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. They confirmed that the movie will debut at Cannes but didn’t offer much beyond the trailer that has already been shown online.

‘Kinds of Kindness’ is due in theaters on June 21st.

    XaZ021ZNetOzcc6jTpVju

The movie was simply mentioned along with a batch of other Searchlight releases, including ‘The Amateur’, starring Rami Malek (due out April 11th next year) and ‘Nightbitch,’ which has Amy Adams starring (and will be out on December 6th).

A little more attention was given to…

    Ella McCay

‘Ella McCay’ is the latest film from James L. Brooks, who has quite the cast attached to his latest film, about a young politician juggling life and work as she prepares to try and take over for her mentor.

Here’s the list (many of which have been announced): Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Albert Brooks, Woody Harrelson, Kumail Nanjiani, Jack Lowden, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn and Rebecca Hall.

The movie has yet to lock down a release date.

    Mufasa: The Lion King

We already knew that Barry Jenkins was working on this prequel to the 2019 photo-realistic remake of the animal drama.

Jenkins headed on stage to explain how incredibly personal Mufasa is to him, and how he watched the original hand-drawn animated version hundreds of times as a kid and then with his nephews. He sees the new movie as a chance to share a similar message and feeling with a new generation.

“This is a massive f*****g film,” Jenkins said, “and it was my job to fill it with massive heart.” He jokes that he can’t share who is performing the music for the movie because Disney won’t let him.

He debuted the first trailer from the movie, on which he’s been working for 3/12 years. It is, as you would expect, full of lion goodness.

‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is in theaters on December 20th.

    And finally? Time to rock.

    Moana 2

Dwayne Johnson at Disney's 2024 CinemaCon Presentation.

By which we mean, of course, The Rock. Dwayne Johnson was on stage with a phalanx of Polynesian dancers to introduce the animated sequel to the 2016 hit.

This new movie was famously adapted from the planned TV series featuring the character, and Johnson explained how his performance as demigod Maui was inspired by his grandfather.

He was surprised on stage by receiving the NATO Spirit of the Industry and seemed genuinely touches.

Johnson wrapped things up by showing some ‘Moana 2’ material. “You’re welcome!”

The footage has Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) singing about how happy she is to be home. But before long, she’s off on another adventure.

‘Moana 2’ makes landfall in theaters on November 27th.

    • Paramount revealed a lot of news on future movies at its CinemaCon Presentation.
    • Other movies highlighted included ‘Transformers One’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’.
    • Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator 2’ provided the big finish.

Paramount had a solid if uninspiring 2023, including a disappointing result for the oft-delayed ‘Mission: Impossible –– Dead Reckoning Part 1’ (which suffered in competition, particularly for IMAX screens, against ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’). But’s best not to bet against Tom Cruise, who will no doubt be doing something to promote the next ‘Mission’ (odds are good we’ll learn the new title). Still, the more recent likes of ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Bob Marley: One Love’ were reasons to be grateful, even as talk of the studio being up for sale continues to swirl.

Beyond that, expect plenty of promotion for Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator II’, ‘A Quiet Place’ prequel ‘Day One’ and possibly the next ‘Transformers’ outing, animated prequel ‘Transformers One’.

Even before the presentation proper kicked off, there was news of new movies in the works. The studio is developing a reboot of the ‘Scary Movie’ spoof franchise to shoot this year for release next year via Paramount’s Miramax subsidiary.

And while a sequel to last year’s family friendly ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ is moving forward, the company also intends to go in a more grown-up direction with a new live-action ‘Turtles’ offering called ‘The Last Ronin’ that will adapt a dark comic book tale set in a totalitarian New York where Shredder’s grandson has employed artificial ninjas to slaughter all but one of the Turtles. The lone survivor swears vengeance. So… yes, definitely a less kid-centric take on the characters, and one that feels even closer to the black and white origins of the story. That one will be produced by former DC movie boss Walter Hamada, who has a multi-year deal with Paramount and ‘Boy Kills World’ writer Tyler Burton Smith is on script duty.

And now, on with the show…

After a glitch with the opening reel (effectively a tour of the Paramount lot), the presentation commenced with another highlighting Paramount’s considerable movie history and spotlighting successes such as ‘Sonic’, ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘TMNT: Mutant Mayhem’.

And, as suspected, the world of ‘Gladiator’ is a focus, as Roman soldiers stride on to the stage to shepherd the executives. Will those who backed unsuccessful movies have to battle lions? Doubt it, but… would watch.

First up to tout two very different movies is one John Krasinski, who is appearing via video from London. He talks first about…

    IF

Cailey Fleming and Blue star in Paramount Pictures' 'IF.'

As Krasinski (who wrote and directed this one) explains, ‘IF’ posits a world where everything kinds imagine is real –– and some imaginary friends are looking to find their humans again (or be connected with new ones).

It has Ryan Reynolds starring, a stacked celebrity voice cast and leans heavily into the Pixar style of movie making.

He cues up the final trailer for the film, which you can see here:

    Paramount Presentation: Other News

The Bee Gees in 'The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.'

In between teases for this year’s releases, there were more news announcements, including confirmation of a ‘Transformers’ and ‘G.I. Joe’ crossover movie, Edgar Wright landing Glen Powell to star in his new take on Stephen King’s ‘The Running Man’, Ridley Scott officially boarding the Bee Gees musical biopic and Damien Chazelle seemingly handed a second chance after the floptastic ‘Babylon’, getting ready to shoot his next movie this year for the studio, with a release planned for 2025.

Also touted? ‘South Park’ duo Trey Parker and Matt Stone are working on a new, live-action comedy musical with Kendrick Lamar, which will debut on July 4 next year.

With the title very much back in the public consciousness thanks to the Netflix live-action show, Paramount has the likes of Dave Bautista and Eric Nam lending their voices to what is currently title ‘Aang: The Last Airbender’, with Bautista playing a villain. The movie will be in theaters on October 10th next year.

That was not the only voice cast confirmed for an upcoming movie. The new ‘Smurfs’ animated movie, which has Rhianna starring, will also see the tonsil talents of Nick Offerman, Natasha Lyonne, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, James Corden, Octavia Spencer, Hannah Waddingham, Sandra Oh, Alex Winter and more. Expect that one on February 15th next year.

Patrick and Spongebob in 'The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run'.

Continuing the animated theme, we learned that ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants,’ will debut on December 19th, 2025

In fact, lots of future slate info dropped, including that the next ‘Star Trek’ movie (whichever it might be from the various options) and the new, Seth MacFarlane produced ‘Naked Gun’ with Liam Neeson starring, will both also arrive next year.

Oh, and if you, like us, had “next Mission movie title announcement” on your bingo card, no scratching it off –– there was a mention of it, but zero footage and no word on title.

    Now on to…

    Transformers One

The animated ‘Transformers’ movie that follows a titanic battle on Cybertron has ‘Toy Story 4’s Josh Cooley in the director’s chair and Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth among its voice cast.

Following a video introduction from Johansson, Hemsworth (who, if we’re honest, was already in Vegas because of the Warners presentation) arrived on stage to talk up the film. He voices Optimus Prime, with Brian Tyree Henry (who joined him at the event) as Megatron.

From the looks of the footage, the tone is aiming for more of a family adventure style, leaning closer to comedy than the live-action/CG movies. And it’s an origin story for many of the characters we love, with Keegan-Michael Key voicing Bumblebee.

Along with a trailer, a first clip screened –– in 3D, no less –– to wide approval for its epic scale and comedy value.

Stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn were on hand to debut an extended trailer for the thriller prequel showing how the scary creatures first arrived and began to terrorize New York. As the previous trailer hinted, this one will see devastation, fear and, ultimately… quiet.

‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ heads to theaters on June 28th.

    Speeding from there, we find…

    Sonic The Hedgehog 3

Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2.'

Given that Sonic and pals have become one of the biggest recent franchises for the studio (even extending to the upcoming ‘Knuckles’ series), it’s almost surprising how low key the talk of the new movie was.

The studio team just showed a trailer, which went heavily on Jim Carrey’s villainous, maniacal Dr. Robotnik and introduced Shadow the Hedgehog.

‘Sonic The Hedgehog 3’ is racing into theaters on December 20th.

A follow-up to the 2022 horror sleeper hit, the new movie will see a Lady Gaga-esque pop star confronted by smile-affected people around a concert venue.

Starring Naomi Scott, Kyle Gallner, Rosemarie DeWitt and more, it looked suitably creepy.

The ‘Smile’ sequel is aiming to scare up business on October 18th.

    And finally, Paramount’s big finish…

    Gladiator II

Russell Crowe in director Ridley Scott's 'Gladiator.'
(Right) Russell Crowe in director Ridley Scott’s ‘Gladiator.’

Sir Ridley Scott appears on screen from London (where he’s still finishing post-production on the movie), to hype his return to the world of ‘Gladiator’.

We were also treated to an intro reel featuring stars Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, and Pedro Pascal all raving about working with Scott and the scope and scale of the film.

It might be unfinished, but that didn’t stop Scott unleashing a five-minute look at the movie.

“I remember that day. I never forgot it. That a slave could take revenge against an emperor,” says Paul Mescal’s Lucius. A boat battle is seen taking place in the Colosseum. Paul Mescal and other Gladiators fight vicious monkeys. “Rage is your gift,” Denzel Washington tells Mescal. Washington and Pedro Pascal watch on as Mescal fights a rhinoceros. The footage ends with a brutal fight between Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal.

Are we not entertained? Yes, we were entertained. Though animal rights activists and worried Pedro Pascal fans might think differently.

‘Gladiator II’ returns to the theatrical arena on November 22nd.

    • ‘Wicked’, ‘Twisters’ and more were showcased at Universal’s CinemaCon show.
    • There was news of sequels to ‘M3GAN’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s.
    • The likes of Jon M. Chu and Glen Powell showed up to support their films.

Universal enjoyed a successful 2023 on several counts, not the least of which was the explosive popularity of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, which did well at both the box office and awards season. Plus there were the horror likes of ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s and the big family hit that was ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’. True, there were also the downsides –– ‘Fast X’ didn’t quite deliver in terms of that giant franchise, while ‘Renfield’ and ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ struggled.

But for the most part, we’re expecting the studio to celebrate its big win, and look forward to a slate that includes giant windy natural disasters (plus star Glen Powell), a new entry for its money-printing ‘Despicable Me’ franchise and what it is hoping will be a magical adaptation of iconic stage musical ‘Wicked’.

And the company is also including 2024 offerings from its Focus arm, so we’re anticipating the likes of Robert Eggers’ vampire tale ‘Nosferatu’.

Unsurprisingly, the studio kicked things off with a sizzle reel highlighting the big names it collaborates with –– Jordan Peele, Christopher Nolan, some youthful chancer called… we want to say, Stevie… Spielberg? –– very much highlighting its relationships and celebrating last year’s big release.

President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution Jim Orr touted the fact that more than 75% of the studio’s releases are original movies, with some hoping to launch new franchises. But his focus was also on ‘Wicked’, letting off a bright green flare and promising that the company will be turning theaters green “you got that, right? Y’all are wicked smart.” Yes, Jim. We got it.

After bringing Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt to CinemaCon last year for ‘The Fall Guy’, the studio kicked off this year’s event with a full screening of the movie, so we doubt there will be too much chatter about it this time around.

    rmpbgAExPwfTyXKruCLje7

Christopher Nolan sent a video message along –– not, to announce a new film with Universal, but to thank theater owners for their support and reminding them that his journey to promote ‘Oppenheimer’ began at last year’s event.

    Now, though to the future…

There was a brief mention of the new ‘Bridget Jones’ movie (more on that here), which is confirmed for February 14th next year.

Illumination boss Chris Meledandri arrived on stage to whip up support for his animated efforts. And yes, he mentioned that a new ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie is indeed on the way in April 2026, which is hardly shocking given the success of the original.

And, of course, a sequence from ‘Despicable Me 4’, which offers much of the expected madness with Gru and co. (and you’ll have seen some of it in the trailer). Will Ferrell is confirmed as the villain, with word that Stephen Colbert is also in the cast. Pharrell Williams is confirmed to be back providing music.

    Twisters

Twin Twisters, in 'Twisters' directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
Twin Twisters, in ‘Twisters’ directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

The new movie’s director Lee Isaac Chung is best known for the far smaller, much-respected indie ‘Minari’, so of course he addresses what is foremost in audience’s minds: why tackle a big franchise entry about tornadoes.

Turns out, it’s his Midwest background –– he grew up in tornado territory, so he brings something personal to the movie about Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glenn Powell chasing twisters. Chung’s intent was to make an immersive movie, and to make us all appreciate the terrifying power of nature. He worked with weather scientists and experts to get the details right and had real-life storm chasers on the crew.

He also name drops Steven Spielberg (a tornado obsessive whose first movie was a tornado epic shot in his bathtub), who taught him a lot about filming them.

(from left) Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Javi (Anthony Ramos), and Tyler (Glen Powell), in 'Twisters' directed by Lee Isaac Chung.
(from left) Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), Javi (Anthony Ramos), and Tyler (Glen Powell), in ‘Twisters’ directed by Lee Isaac Chung.

Stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos joined their director on stage to offer up the usual anecdotes about filming in blazing heat and being pelted with water, air, ice, and more (to remind us of their commitment, Powell and Ramos once more faced water, fake debris and –– of course! –– a cow, albeit inflatable, on stage).

They’re also here to key up some footage from the film. A rodeo is disrupted, and Powell and co. head off on their chasing mission. There’s a glimpse of Dorothy, the storm-testing device from the original movie.

And the two giant twisters from the trailer combine into one giant super tornado. It’s very much the “‘Twister’… but bigger” energy from the first released footage.

‘Twisters’ heads to theaters on July 19th.

From natural action to supernatural horror, and beyond…

The next sizzle reel highlighted the studio’s more recent horror legacy, including collaborations with Jordan Peele and James Wan.

And confirmation that sequels to both ‘M3GAN’ and ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s will appear next year –– ‘M3GAN 2.0’ in May, ‘Freddy’s in the fall.

But the first actual presentation from the genre is for…

    Wolf Man

Since ‘Wolf Man’ is in production, there was just a brief clip introduced by director Leigh Whannell, featuring stars Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner. It’ll see a father (Abbott) trying to protect his family from a threat. Only… he’s the threat.

‘Wolf Man’ will be in theaters on January 17th, 2025.

Eschewing a bigger presentation, it was largely a sizzle reel of footage from the company’s upcoming releases, including the aforementioned ‘Back to Black’ (due on May 17th) and pope-focused drama ‘Conclave‘ ( November 1st), which stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and more.

Perhaps the most exciting was the first look at footage from Robert Eggers’ new horror, ‘Nosferatu’. The director’s take on the classic vampire tale looks suitably intense and creepy, with Willem Dafoe at the forefront of the clips.

It’ll be in theaters on December 25th –– because Christmas always needs vampires.

The new animated charmer, featuring the voice of Lupita Nyong’o and more, and already has a trailer online (you can see it here).

But if we’re honest, it was all preamble to the biggest movie that Universal is pinning its hopes on being popular…

‘The Wild Robot’ will be on screens on September 20th.

    Wicked

'Wicked,' opens in theaters on November 27th.
‘Wicked,’ opens in theaters on November 27th.

With posters adorning the walls outside Caesar’s Palace forum, tulips in all the cupholders and light up green lanyards handed out before the presentation, Jon M. Chu’s big adaptation of the hit stage musical is a two-part gamble on the largest scale.

Jeff Goldblum’s giant golden head kicks things off on screen… and he steps out (from behind the curtain, as befits the Wizard of Oz) to enthuse in true Goldblumian style how “dreamy” the making of the movie was –– practical sets and all.

Producer Marc Platt and director Chu are up next, who in turn introduce members of the cast (including Michelle Yeoh, who chides her ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ and ‘Wicked’ director for always casting her as “mean” characters.

The last to take the stare are stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who talk about how much the movie(s) mean to them.

Footage from the film encompassed snatches from several of the musical’s big tunes, including ‘Popular’ and act one show-stopper ‘Defying Gravity’. It ends with Erivo’s Elphaba (who will become known as the Wicked Witch of the West) claiming her broomstick. “You can do this, you can do anything,” Grande’s Glinda tells her. “I’m not afraid,” Elphaba replies, “It’s the wizard who should be afraid of me….”

Oh, and we learned that Peter Dinklage is in the movie as the voice of Dr. Dillamond, a goat professor at the show’s Shiz University who befriends Elphaba.

What was shown was certainly impressive and bodes well for fan expectations.

‘Wicked’ is flying into theaters in those two parts –– the first on November 27th this year, followed by the second on November 26th, 2025.

    Preview:

    • Lionsgate brought the likes of ‘The Crow’ and ‘Borderlands’ to CinemaCon.
    • Stars including Henry Cavill and Halle Berry promoted their new movies.
    • The studio revealed several movies that have yet to lock down release dates.

Following a somewhat subdued and honestly lacking 2023 presentation, Lionsgate has a much more packed release schedule this year.

With movies such as the new take on ‘The Crow’, video game adaptation ‘Borderlands’ and an actual update on ‘John Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ –– there is plenty for the company to drum up excitement for.

But before talking about the movies coming in 2024, there was a chance to tease even further in the future, with confirmation of ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton adapting the ‘Naruto’ manga and anime, the third ‘Now You See Me’ in development with Ruben Fleischer directing and, even more intriguingly, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse working on a new ‘Blair Witch Project’ and Margot Robbie intending to make a ‘Monopoly’ movie with her LuckyChap company.

Now, on to the imminent offerings…

The upcoming release of Guy Ritchie’s World War II based-on-truth spy action thriller gave the company the chance to also tease his early 2025 release, which we now know is called ‘In The Grey’ and features criminals who work in a gray area of the world, somewhere between right and wrong.

Henry Cavill was brought out on stage to promote ‘Ministry’ and ‘In The Grey’, which he’s also appearing in. ‘In The Grey’ will see him once more appearing alongside ‘Ministry’s Eiza Gonzalez, with the addition of Jake Gyllenhaal and Rosamund Pike. It’s a heist thriller that looks slick and fun.

And because he’s Mr. Lionsgate right now, Cavill also talked up the ‘Highlander’ reboot movie series that has Chad Stahelski in the director’s chair.

According to Cavill, the new movies will dig much deeper into the lore of the characters and the world in ways the previous films did not. “I’m a lover of the original movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it.”

He also teases that, “If you thought you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything.” Showoff!

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ opens next week on April 19th, ‘In The Grey’ will be in theaters on January 17, 2025. The ‘Highlander’ movie has yet to score a date.

The presentation then moved on to a quick look at…

    The Strangers: Chapter 1

Director Renny Harlin's 'The Strangers: Chapter 1.'

The reboot of the horror franchise comes from Renny Harlin and kicks off a fresh trilogy.

This first new movie follows what happens when a couple driving cross-country to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest sees their car break down and is forced to spend the night in a secluded rental, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.

A trailer was shown, but you can see the previously released version below.

Onwards to what the studio is no doubt hoping will be one of its heavy hitters in an era where video game adaptations are ruling the genre roost…

    Borderlands

Borderlands’ adapts the popular sci-fi game series, and the movie boasts a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Haley Bennett, Kevin Hart and (the voice of) Jack Black.

The cast and director Eli Roth submitted videos to the presentation, talking up the tone of the film (the extended version of the trailer continues the feel of Roth aiming for a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-style romp). He cites ‘The Fifth Element’, ‘Aliens’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and more as inspiration.

‘Borderlands’ is in theaters on August 9th.

With that complete, it was on to the other big hitter…

    The Crow

    Bill Skarsgård in 'The Crow.'
Bill Skarsgård in ‘The Crow.’ Photo Credit: Larry Horricks for Lionsgate.

The presentation for the supernatural thriller remake begins with a lot of talk about how the new movie draws more from James O’Barr’s graphic novel source material more closely than the 1994 adaptation.

With Rupert Sanders directing this one, the cast includes Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and Danny Huston in the story of a couple who are murdered when the woman’s past catches up to her, only for the guy to be brought back to mystical life to take violent revenge on the criminals responsible.

The new trailer for the movie played to the room, which vastly improved on the first. It’s a lot grittier and more violent and spends a little more time building up the relationship between Skarsgård and Twigs and then being told, “The Crow will guide you to put the wrong things right. Kill them. Kill them all…”

We watch our hero getting into impressive scraps and needing to rebuild his body after a nasty encounter with traffic. Could this turn around word on the new movie?

‘The Crow’ flies into theaters on August 23rd.

    Next!

    Never Let Go

Halle Berry took the stage to talk up horror movie ‘Never Let Go’ from director Alexandre Aja, who also made ‘Crawl’ and 2006’s ‘The Hills Have Eyes’.

It’s the story of a family who have been haunted by an evil presence for years –– or at least, that’s what their mother claims –– begins to question the truth of their situation. Berry talked about how she’s an adrenaline junkie who grew up loving ‘The Shining’ and looked to be part of a story she’s never seen before.

And she also mentioned going Full Method to play an overprotective mother who lives with her kids in a cabin in the woods –– including learning to skin a squirrel.

‘Never Let Go’ is out on September 27th.

    LMDLz9bk1PL2KBMzAJUeV6

    Next, a surprise entry…

    The Killer’s Game

The movie features Dave Bautista as an assassin who falls for Sofia Boutella and looks to start a family. But then alas! He’s diagnosed with a fatal disease, so to help those around him avoid the pain of a long illness, he takes out a contract on his own life… until he learns he was misdiagnosed and learns that the contract is still valid –– and a lot of his former colleagues (including an enthusiastic killer played by old ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ pal Pom Klementieff) are still looking to collect.

Day Shift’s’ J.J. Perry is behind this one, and it looks fun, but it has yet to confirm a release date.

    bDGAW2juQSFlTfeikJ2916

Now, to one people might have something to say about…

    ‘Flight Risk’

A thriller directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg? Yeah, surely that won’t be controversial.

Still, the film, which features Wahlberg as a scenery-chewing mob hitman who takes over piloting a charter flight transporting a prisoner (Topher Grace) to New York to stand trial had a footage reel. The biggest thing to draw attention appeared to be Wahlberg’s accent and hair…

‘Flight Risk’ is still being edited, so it has yet to announce a release slot.

    Moving swiftly to…

    ‘Good Fortune’

Another less reported movie, this one directed by Aziz Ansari, in which he also stars alongside Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.

It’s the story of Ansari’s struggling Los Angeles-based assistant, who is visited by a “budget guardian angel” (how could Reeves be a budget anything?), who helps him find meaning and value in his life. And how is that accomplished? A body-swap twist with Rogen’s wealthier sort, so both can see how the other half lives.

When you have Ansari behind your movie, you naturally have him come out on stage to be funny, and so he does, poking fun at Henry Cavill and how theater owners (the primary crowd here) frequent strip clubs in Vegas.

He also tells a story about Keanu Reeves –– a man who has survived ‘Matrix’ and ‘John Wick’ movies ending up on crutches while shooting this film… by tripping on a rug on his way back to his trailer. He kept on working, shooting everything bar one dance sequence, for which Ansari, in a moment of genuine gratitude, described him as an actual angel.

‘Good Fortune’ is another movie without a release date in place.

And talking of Keanu Reeves and ‘John Wick’…

    Ballerina

Keanu Reeves as John Wick in 'John Wick: Chapter 4.'
Keanu Reeves as John Wick in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’ Photo Credit: Murray Close.

The ‘Wick’ spin-off starring Ana de Armas as an assassin has been the subject of much speculation, most pointedly because it has been delayed more than once.

After little to talk about on this one last year, the company had more to say on this one, including extra details on how the release delays allowed director Len Wiseman to go in an add extra action scenes.

The first trailer for the film screened which, to no-one’s surprise, includes Reeves’ appearance as John Wick in the movie. And, also less than surprising, it factors in the High Table, the Continental, and some key cast from the franchise. From the looks of it, Reeves’ Wick will be training de Armas’ character.

‘Ballerina’ will land in theaters on June 6th next year.

    One more for luck?

    Michael

It’s still in production, so director Antoine Fuqua couldn’t make it to Vegas, but Lionsgate still wanted to make sure we all know the Michael Jackson biopic is on the way next year. Producer Graham King (who has no little experience with musical movies about big stars after ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) was on hand to offer a first look. Behind-the-scenes buzz-builder ahoy!

King revealed that the movie will feature more than 30 songs from Jackson’s oeuvre, and that it’ll dig into various aspects of his life in music and beyond. How far it’ll probe still remains to be seen, but King seemed confident in the filmmakers’ approach.

‘Michael’ is due to arrive on April 18th next year.

    • Maggie Gyllenhaal has offered a first look at Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley in ‘The Bride!’.
    • The new take on ‘Frankenstein’ is now in production.
    • Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz co-star.

Much like fellow literary horror icon Dracula, Mary Shelley’s Dr. Frankenstein and the not-so-ethical doctor’s ill-fated creation are seemingly always the subject of adaptations for screens big and small.

The latest to try their hand at some fresh re-telling is Maggie Gyllenhaal, who proved she had great directorial chops to go along with her acting career when she made intense drama ‘The Lost Daughter’ in 2021 and it went on to score three Oscar nominations.

But ‘The Bride!’ (for that is the title her latest, exclamation point and all) should certainly prove to be something quite different from Gyllenhaal, and she’s now taken to Instagram to offer up first looks at stars Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley via the movie’s camera tests.

What’s the Story of ‘The Bride!’?

    'The Bride!'
‘The Bride!’ Photo: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Instagram account.

Here is the logline for the movie: A lonely Frankenstein (Bale) travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride (Buckley) is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.

Who Else is in ‘The Bride!’?

    Jessie Buckley in 'The Bride!'
Jessie Buckley in ‘The Bride!’ Photo: Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Instagram account.

Gyllenhaal’s cast also includes Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Julianne Hough and Penélope Cruz.

From the looks of this, Bale is going the typically committed route (we’re sure that’s prosthetics, though he’d probably agree to die and get stitched back together in the service of his art given half the chance) and Buckley’s look is also striking.

It’s a seemingly refreshing version of the ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ story, written by the director and picked up for distribution by Warner Bros. And that title –– whether or not it keeps the exclamation point –– indicates a solid role for Buckley, who did such great work in ‘The Lost Daughter’.

Kevin Smith has made a career riffing on pop culture and channeling nostalgia, along with a steady stream of stoner gags.

With his time in the ‘Clerks’ universe apparently over for a while, Kevin Smith has turned his attention to an original movie. His latest, ‘The 4:30 Movie’, might sound like it’s headed back in a weed direction (but it’s not ‘The 4:20 Movie), but is instead founded upon his own teenage love of cinema.

Set in the summer of 1986, the coming-of-age comedy follows three sixteen-year-old friends (played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup) who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. As with the original ‘Clerks’, which was famously shot at night in the convenience store where Smith worked in his 20s, ‘The 4:30 Movie’ utilized the Smodcastle Cinema that the director owns. A cinema, in fact, in New Jersey where he used to visit as a teenager himself.

This is what he told Deadline:

“The day we bought Smodcastle Cinemas, I not only reclaimed an integral piece of my childhood, I also suddenly had access to a visually interesting and cost-free movie location! So I started writing a personal paean to the past for us 70’s and 80’s kids –– the pre-information generation who grew up without the Internet, when romance and relationships required much more than a swipe to get started, and the idea of asking out someone you had a crush on was as terrifying as the looming threat of nuclear war.”

When will ‘The 4:30 Movie’ be in theaters?

Smith is returning to a release policy that has worked for him in the past –– he’s taking the new movie out on a roadshow tour this summer. Then, it’ll be released nationwide in theaters, but a date has yet to be announced.

    • Director James Mangold posted the picture in response to a flood of paparazzi set images.
    • This new movie will chronicle a key early part of Bob Dylan’s career.

Thanks to the recent one-two punch of ‘Wonka’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’, Timothée Chalamet’s celeb-obsession-ometer is naturally high right now. So with him out and about in New York shooting the new film ‘A Complete Unknown’, there has been a paparazzi feeding frenzy for images of the young star playing a scruffy 1960s-era Bob Dylan.

To head off more, filmmaker James Mangold, who is directing the new movie, has released his own image of Chalamet, plus one of the clapper board from the movie, via social media.

Co-written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, ‘A Complete Unknown’ is set in the influential New York music scene of the early ’60s.

It follows 19-year-old Minnesota musician Bob Dylan’s meteoric rise as a folk singer to concert halls and the top of the charts — his songs and mystique becoming a worldwide sensation — culminating in his groundbreaking electric rock and roll performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

In the new movie, Edward Norton plays fellow folk musician Pete Seeger (a role that initially went to Benedict Cumberbatch before scheduling issues forced him to drop out), Elle Fanning is appearing as a character based on university student and artist Sylvie Russo, who was an early big love of Dylan’s, while Monica Barbaro is Joan Baez.

The cast also includes Boyd Holbrook, Scoot McNairy, Dan Fogler, Will Harrison, Charlie Tahan, P.J. Byrne, Eli Brown, Nick Pupo, Big Bill Morganfield, Laura Kariuki, Eric Berryman, David Alan Basche, Joe Tippett, and James Austin Johnson.

One person not in the movie? Chalamet’s ‘Dune’ co-star Austin Butler, who famously got his own big break playing another huge music icon in ‘Elvis’.

Here’s how Chalamet joked to Butler about him appearing, as reported by NME:

“I wish you were in it! There’s an Elvis character in the Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk the Line’. It’s really brief, it’s very brief, but I was kind of wishing we could create a musical cinematic universe.”

While the actor doesn’t have any roles officially lined up after the Dylan pic, he’ll likely return for ‘Dune: Messiah’ as and when director Denis Villeneuve is ready to make the next chapter in the successful sci-fi saga.

But Warners, pleased with the box office hauls of both ‘Wonka’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’, has now signed a deal with the star, which will see the studio collaborating with him on movies he’ll lead and produce, much as it recently did with ‘Barbie’s Margot Robbie and her LuckyChap company.

After years spent in development limbo (more on that below), we are finally going to see the remake of 1994 cult goth action movie ‘The Crow’, which as before will be adapted from James O’Barr’s graphic novel.

And now, to remind us all, the first pictures from the film are online, giving us a look at Bill Skarsgård (tattooed and buff), and FKA Twigs as soulmates Eric and Shelly, who are slaughtered, only for Eric to be brought back via a supernatural avian for some dark, vengeful justice against their murderers.

O’Barr’s comic book focuses on a man named Eric Draven, who along with his fiancée Shelly Webster, find themselves under attack. They’re brutally assaulted and murdered by a gang, but a mystical crow brings Eric back so he can hunt down and take out the criminals responsible.

Director Alex Proyas, along with writers David J. Schow and John Shirley, adapted the comic book for the 1994 movie, which featured Brandon Lee as Eric Draven, a rock musician slain alongside his fiancée by a criminal gang on Devil’s Night in Detroit.

It was made infamous by the death of Lee on set in an accident involving a blank round in a prop gun. It went on to become a box office success, spawned three sequels and a TV series spin-off.

If you thought Eric Draven’s story sounds tortured, wait until you learn of the new movie’s journey to screens.

Blade’ director Steven Norrington came up with a fresh take in 2008, which went through different variations including Nick Cave on screenplay duty and Mark Wahlberg considering the lead. Norrington later walked off the project over creative differences.

The next year, ‘28 Weeks Later’s Juan Carlos Fresnadillo came aboard, while ‘Watchman’ writer Alex Tse took a fresh crack at the script. Bradley Cooper was offered the lead but turned it down. A spat over the rights emerged saw Fresnadillo leave, to be replaced by F. Javier Gutiérrez, with another new script in the works. Luke Evans became the latest potential star, but that didn’t work out either.

Most recently, ‘The Nun’s Corin Hardy was attached to the movie, and he oversaw a version that briefly had Jack Huston in the lead before being replaced by Jason Momoa. Yet even that compelling combo was stymied, largely by “creative and financial differences” which led to Hardy and his chosen star leaving in 2018.

Rupert Sanders, who has the live-action ‘Ghost in the Shell’ and ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ on his resume, jumped aboard in 2022, with ‘King Richard’s Zach Baylin writing a draft before William Schneider took it on.

When will ‘The Crow’ remake be in theaters?

Thanks to ‘John Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ being pushed back to 2025 so more action set-pieces can be added, ‘The Crow’ has flapped in to replace it, landing on June 7th.

    • New images from ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ have arrived.
    • Director Todd Phillips has also talked a potential trailer date.
    • The movie is out in October.

In this social media age, it’s not unusual for filmmakers to be pressed into (or want to) use their personal channels to promote their work. And Todd Phillips, who is busy in post-production on ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, the follow-up to his billion-dollar-plus (not to mention Oscar-winning) 2019 take on the classic Batman villain, has been drip-feeding images from the new movie for months now.

The filmmaker used Valentine’s Day as an excuse to offer new pics of his central pair –– that would be Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Lady Gaga as a version of his ride-or-die romantic pairing (and frequent partner in crime) Harley Quinn.

Quite what Phillips’ take on Quinn will be remains to be seen, but since his (and Phoenix’s) version of the Joker origin story stands in stark contrast to Batman lore, we’re anticipating tweaks.

What’s the story of ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’?

Not much is officially known about the new movie, but with Phillips co-writing once again alongside Scott Silver, ‘Folie à Deux’ promises more bad behavior from Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, joined now by Gaga’s Quinn.

We’ll pick up the story Phoenix’s Fleck, the wannabe comedian struggling with mental health issues who, besieged by disappointment and fueled by rage, slowly segues into a psychopathic killer and agent of chaos.

Fleck ended up in Arkham Asylum –– the infamous facility for psychotic criminals from the ‘Batman’ comic book universe, and the new movie appears to take place to some degree there.

Arkham is where the Joker (usually, at least) meets one Dr. Harleen Frances Quinzel, who eventually becomes obsessed with him –– and he, in turn, slowly drives her insane until she becomes Harley Quinn, the character who has long been part of comics canon and most recently on the big screen by Margot Robbie in the ‘Suicide Squad’ movies and her own spin-off.

There will be some carry over from the first movie –– Zazie Beetz is back as Sophie Dumond, the neighbor with whom Arthur had a relationship (at least until, spoiler alert, it was revealed as all in his head).

Who else is new in the ‘Joker’ sequel?

The new cast also includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Bill Smitrovich and Jacob Lofland are all in the ensemble.

Is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ a musical?

One of the biggest elements of speculation for the new film has been the idea it is a musical. But according to cinematographer Lawrence Sher, it might not be the song-filled experience we’ve all been expecting.

Here’s what Sher said on a recent Zoom call:

“It’s not a musical per se, it just has music in it, that’s all. Music’s a part of the movie and the characters, but I don’t know if it’s a musical.”

Of course, he could always be trying to throw us all off the scent. More of a clue will come in the teasers and trailers. And talking of…

When will the ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ trailer be out?

Phillips responded to a comment on his Insta post asking about when we might see the trailer.

    Here’s what he said:

“Been getting this question a lot. The movie comes out in October. So our first teaser won’t be out until mid-April.”

When is ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ in theaters?

‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ will land in theaters on October 4th.

    • The first images of ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 are online.
    • Star Lee Jung-jae will be back with a mix of returning and new cast.
    • Netflix released a trailer for its new and returning shows for 2024.

The wait for a new season of ‘Squid Game’ has been almost as torturous as some of the twists in the first run, all the way back in 2021.

‘Squid Game’ become Netflix’s most-watched show, with the company estimating that subscribers worldwide streamed 1.65 billion hours of the show in the first 28 days of its release. It inspired many Halloween costumes based on the contestants’ numbered green tracksuits and the orange jumpsuit/face mask combination sported by guards on the show.

And while last year’s reality show ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ may have tried to tide us all over, it was far from the real thing. The good news for fans, then, is that it’ll be back for a second season this year, with pictures to prove it.

Season One saw 456 cash-poor contestants are invited by a mysterious organization to compete in a series of children’s games – with deadly consequences – to win a piece of the ₩45.6 billion prize pool (around $38.5 million).

If you’re one of the potentially three people where Netflix is available that somehow didn’t watch the show, we won’t spoil anything further.

What will happen in the new season?

Here’s all we know… “Main man Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) abandons his US plans after a mysterious call and embarks on a chase with a motive.”

The new season will also welcome other beloved characters back like Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) and Recruiter (Gong Yoo). Adding to the intrigue, a new character played by Park Gyu-young makes her debut, sparking curiosity about the new character.

What other shows and movies will come to Netflix in 2024?

For those eager to hunt for more clues as to what will be happening, footage from ‘Squid Game’s second season was included in a big new trailer released by Netflix.

The trailer featured a wealth of looks at shows both old and new, plus movies that will launch. So if you’re a fan of ‘Cobra Kai’, ‘The Diplomat’, ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Sweet Tooth’ or are anticipating new series including ‘3 Body Problem’, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and the arrival of movies such as ‘Axel F’, ‘Hit Man’, and the second entry in Zack Snyder’s ‘Rebel Moon’ franchise, chances are you’ll find something to get excited about here.
