If you were wondering when you might get an exclusive look at the new action comedy thriller starring Dave Bautista and Sofia Boutella, your wait is over.

Moviefone is excited to debut a new image from the film, featuring Boutella as Maize, a key character in the story (see above).

With a cast brimming with action icons and character favorites, it promises plenty of crazy set-pieces and entertaining performances as it answers the question “what would happen if a hitman learned they’re dying and put a hit out on themselves. But… Oops! Turns out the diagnosis is wrong, but now they still have to deal with everyone trying to kill them.”

The new action comedy kicks off when top hitman Joe Flood (Bautista) is diagnosed with a terminal illness, and he decides to take matters into his own hands –– by taking a hit out on himself.

But when he both learns he was misdiagnosed and the very hitmen he hired also target his ex–girlfriend (Boutella), he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and win back the love of his life before it’s too late.

The new movie has been in development for a long time. But it has finally found like thanks to Lionsgate, which acquired the script in 2023 and hired ‘Day Shift’ director J.J. Perry to oversee it.

Adapted from the novel by Jay Bonansinga, the script has seen work from James Coyne, Simon Kinberg and Rand Ravich.

The cast for the movie also includes Pom Klementieff (which marks a reunion for Bautista with one of his ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ co-stars), Scott Adkins. Marko Zaror, Daniel Bernhardt, Ben Kingsley and Terry Crews.

Bautista was recently asked about the choice of Boutella as Maize by The Hollywood Reporter.

This is what he had to say:

“They brought forth other actresses, and I just kept turning them down, saying, ‘No, I just can’t wrap my head around anybody else other than Sofia,’ ”So then I said, ‘Let’s not look for another actress. Let’s just try to move schedules around so we can make Sofia work.’ It took a lot of doing from producers and agents and managers, and Sofia being willing to fly back and forth from Budapest to London while she was on two projects.”

When will ‘The Killer’s Game’ be in theaters?

You’ll be able to catch all the action when ‘The Killer’s Game’ arrives in theaters on Friday, September 13th.

  • First Look at ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’

    • Gareth Edwards is in the director’s chair.

While ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ in 2022 seemed to signal the end for the franchise that was spawned way back in 1993 with ‘Jurassic Park,’ turns out it was less of an extinction-level event and more of a brief pause between eras.

Because, far from letting a cash dinosaur just wither into nothingness, Universal began making plans for another movie featuring giant beasties and the humans who want to help, hunt or otherwise avoid being snack food last year.

What is now officially titled ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ has come together quickly, and now with shooting still in progress, we have the first look at some of the human characters including those played by Scarlett Johansson, ‘Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali.

Here’s the official synopsis for the new movie:

“Five years after the events of ‘Jurassic World Dominion,’ the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

Johansson is playing skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.

When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.

Ali is Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader

Bailey (who will also be seen in Universal’s ‘Wicked’ this Thanksgiving) plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis.

Rupert Friend (last seen in ‘Asteroid City’) appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (‘The Lincoln Lawyer’) plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

The cast also includes Luna Blaise, David Iacono and Audrina Miranda as Reuben’s family. And, as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain and Ed Skrein.

Who is making ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’?

    'The Creator' director Gareth Edwards.

With longtime producers Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley returning to shepherd the new movie (and original ‘Park’ director Steven Spielberg as an executive producer as usual), the first other major player hired was scriptwriter David Koepp.

He, of course, wrote the first two ‘Jurassic’ movies, working from the concepts and characters originally created by novelist Michael Crichton.

Directing this time is Gareth Edwards, who is best known for the likes of ‘Monsters’ in 2010, 2014’s ‘Godzilla,’ ‘2016’s ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ and, most recently, last year’s sci-fi pic ‘The Creator.’

Amblin and Universal have scheduled the new ‘Jurassic’ outing for release on July 2nd, 2025.

    • The ‘Transformers One’ Panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con featured casting news about Laurence Fishburne and Steve Buscemi.
    • Chris Hemsworth and Tyree Henry are among the leads.
    • ‘Toy Story 4’ director Josh Cooley made the new movie.

While this year’s outing of the San Diego Comic-Con has so far proved to be a relatively quiet one (at least until the likes of Marvel show up to offer tantalizing news tidbits), there was some new information about an animated movie that is garnering some positive buzz off the back of early screenings: ‘Transformers One’.

The movie, which stars the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key and Scarlett Johansson features the much-loved robots in disguise… but at a time when they were able to transform at all.

It kicked off one of the early presentation panels, and the actors (minus Johansson, who was busy on the new ‘Jurassic World’ film) were on hand alongside director Josh Cooley (‘Toy Story 4’) and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to debut some fresh footage and provide some new insight into the movie.

And the panel also offered up the latest trailer, which you can watch above.

The new movie is the untold origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, better known as sworn enemies, but once were friends bonded like brothers who changed the fate of Cybertron forever.

Hemsworth voices Orion Pax, who will become Autobot leader Optimus Prime, while Henry is D-16, the future Megatron. Key plays B-127, a chatty ‘bot who’ll later be known as Bumblebee, and Johansson is Elita-1.

What did we learn about the ‘Transformers One’ cast?

The panel included word (or rather, confirmation) that Jon Hamm is playing Cybertron leader Sentinel Prime, with Laurence Fishburne taking the Morpheus-alike role of Alpha Prion.

Perhaps the biggest revelation was word that Steve Buscemi voices Starscream, who we know will become one of Megatron’s (usually) loyal lieutenants. In ‘Transformers One’, they’re in opposition, with Starscream proclaiming that “the idea of a unified Cybertron is a myth” –– though it’s clear D-16 is starting to have doubts about his alliances.

Chris Hemsworth at the Comic-Con 2022 'Transformers One' presentation.

Among the panel highlights were funny moments, including Hemsworth remarking that he and Henry –– who never shared a recording booth –– prepped to play best friends by sleeping in bunk beds.

Key, meanwhile (whose character is the comic relief for the movie), looked to lead the Hall H audience in a rendition of the ‘Transformers’ cartoon theme tune, only to find few takers. “Good, now we know who’s over 40,” he quipped.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura at the Comic-Con 2022 'Transformers One' presentation.

This is what producer di Bonaventura had to say about the advantages of animation for a Transformers movie:

“If we did this as a live-action movie, it would probably cost $500M. What has been tricky in live-action is that every time a robot talks, it costs a lot of money. In animation, you can have them build out their character.”

And for Cooley, it was a chance to dig into the characters lore.

“Hasbro gave me the bible of ‘Transformers’, this Tolkien-length history –– so much to play with, a huge sandbox –– I wanted the feeling of what it was like to play with the toys as a kid, that feeling of nostalgia and joy trying to make these things work.”

    • It’s the latest show from ‘Yellowstone’ creator Taylor Sheridan.

While ‘Yellowstone’ might be coming to an end, series creator Taylor Sheridan is certainly keeping himself busy. He has a variety of other shows either on streaming services or in the works, and the first images from one of the newcomers, ‘Landman’ are now online.

Starring Billy Bob Thornton (who first came into Sheridan’s orbit when he took a role on ‘Yellowstone’ prequel ‘1883’), the series is set in the high-pressure (in several senses of the word) world of oilrigs in Texas.

And around Thornton, he’s recruited a typically starry cast.

Set in the proverbial boomtowns of West Texas, ‘Landman’ is a modern-day tale of fortune seeking in the world of oil rigs. Based on the 11-part podcast ‘Boomtown’ from Imperative Entertainment and Texas Monthly, the series is an upstairs/downstairs story of roughnecks and wildcat billionaires fueling a boom so big, it’s reshaping our climate, our economy and our geopolitics.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Thornton discussed his character:

“I’m a fixer and a foreman. Even though I work with the head guy, I also work very closely with the people out in the field. I check the wells every day, get the information to give him, I deal with the landowners, and if something happens on that land, if there’s an accident on the rig, I’ve got to solve that problem and go deal with the lawyers. There aren’t really a lot of scenes where my character comes home and says, ‘My God, was my day amazing!’ I slink into the house every day like somebody just beat the hell out of me.”

Moore discussed working with Sheridan on the show:

“He thinks way ahead. He’s thinking through not just one season. He’s thinking through an epic story. He writes incredible, complex, dynamic and delicious women who are powerful, vulnerable, flawed.”

When will ‘Landman’ be on screens?

    • The first pictures from ‘Gladiator II’ are online.
    • Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Connie Nielsen are among the cast.
    • Ridley Scott directed the sequel to his 2000 epic.

Though we’ve gotten used to legacy sequels landing years, sometimes decades after the original movie (Netflix’s ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ is one recent example), it’s less common for the original director to return 24 years later. But few directors are as driven or influential as Ridley Scott, who at 86 is still making giant movies at an impressive rate.

And that brings us to ‘Gladiator II’, which follows up the swords and sandals epic of 2000. While the original starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, a general who is betrayed by a scheming emperor’s son (Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus) when the ruler favors Maximus as his heir.

Maximus ends up a gladiator in the arena, fighting for his life. A fateful showdown with Commodus sees both men dead by the end of the movie.

Yet writer David Scarpa and Scott have found a way to continue the story through Commodus’ sister Lucilla (with Connie Nielsen reprising her role) and her son Lucius.

Scott’s sequel is set decades after the original film. Lucilla dispatched Lucius (who in adult form is played by ‘Normal People’ and ‘Aftersun’s Paul Mescal) to the African region of Numidia, where he has grown up feeling resentful of his mother for sending him away.

Her reasons were to secure his safety –– Numidia is beyond the grasp of Rome. But as Lucius has raised his own family, his safety is put under threat when Rome decides to invade Numidia.

Returned to his birthplace as a slave and then a gladiator, Lucius must confront his past and secure his future.

Here’s what Mescal told Vanity Fair about the themes of the movie:

“What human beings will do to survive, but also what human beings will do to win. We see that in the arena, but also in the political struggle that’s going on outside of my character’s storyline, where you see there’s other characters striving and pulling for power. Where’s the space for humanity? Where’s the space for love, familial connection? And ultimately, will those things overcome this kind of greed and power? Those things are oftentimes directly in conflict with each other.”

“Ridley’s process tends to be extremely collaborative. “He is extremely open to suggestions and ideas, which is what makes him a dream director in that way. He hears you, he sees you, and I, for one, come up every morning with my list of ideas that I run by him. Comedian and actor Nick Kroll was on hand to discuss the 8th and final season of his popular adult comedy ‘Big Mouth’, and introduced a table read montage video from the series.

“We started ‘Big Mouth’ eight years ago. Season Eight will be coming out early next year. It’s our final season of the show. I think about where when we started, ‘BoJack Horseman’ had come out and we were in the next little round of animation at a time when Netflix itself was just beginning to do original programming. We had unbelievable freedom to create exactly the show we wanted to make. Netflix really gave us the freedom to do that. Eight seasons later, we will be the longest running series in Netflix history for an adult series. I’m incredibly proud of that and I’m proud of how we’ve made the show. I’m proud of the partnership we’ve had with Netflix, and it’s just been an unbelievable joy creating this show with Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett and Andrew Goldberg, our unbelievable cast, our unbelievable writers, and are unbelievable storyboard artists, editors, everyone involved in the engineering of it, the producers, and our partners at Titmouse. This has been an incredible labor of love.”

Actor, comedian, and singer Craig Robinson took the stage to discuss two upcoming films he will appear in. First, he introduced a scene from ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’.

“Hey, everybody! I’m here today because SpongeBob is back — and so are his friends. ‘Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie’ is coming exclusively to Netflix in August, and I’m so pumped to be in it”

Robinson then discussed his other Netflix movie, ‘In Your Dreams’ before introducing a video of actor Simu Liu talking about his involvement in the project and presenting a clip from the film.

“As awesome as it was to finally reach a place in my career where I got to voice a Squirrel Dad, it pales in comparison to my next role. I think it proves I’m at the top of my game: A stuffed giraffe. I was told by the filmmakers that I was their first and only choice. They said, “Craig, you were born to play this part.” His name’s Tony Baloney, because he’s stuffed with processed meat. Oh, and he can shoot laser farts. That’s awesome. Daniel Day Lewis had ‘Lincoln’, I got Baloney Tony. I’m already working on my Oscar speech.”

Before introducing an animation test from the film ‘Pookoo’, acclaimed actor Nathan Lane discussed his upcoming animated movie ‘Spellbound’.

“’Spellbound’ is about Ellian, the tenacious young daughter of the rulers of Lumbria. She has a secret; a mysterious spell has turned her parents into monsters! Ellian loves her parents. That’s why she summons the mysterious Oracles of the Sun and Moon. I play the Oracle of the Moon and Tituss Burgess plays the Oracle of the Sun and we come to help her break the spell. The cast also includes some other great actors: Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, John Lithgow, and Jenifer Lewis. It also has music by Academy Award winning composer Alan Menken. The film is directed by Vicky Jensen, who also directed a little movie you may have heard of called ‘Shrek.’ ‘Spellbound’ is a big adventure for the whole family, filled with incredible new characters you’ll love. I’m excited to share that the movie, which will release globally on Netflix on November 22, 2024.”

Zach Snyder Talks ‘Twilight of the Gods’

Director Zack Snyder (‘Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire’) and his wife, producer Deborah Snyder presented footage and images from their new animated series ‘Twilight of the Gods’.

Zack Snyder said this about the series:

“’Twilight of the Gods’ was a show that we’ve been working on for quite some time, years in the making. I’ve always been obsessed with Norse mythology. I think it’s an amazing place. I love mythology in general, and so the idea of being able to dig into this rich tapestry of heroes and gods was an incredible opportunity for both of us. This show is really a story. It’s a story about love and revenge, and it just takes us across this massive and beautiful landscape in pursuit of, well, you’ll have to see.”

    Deborah Snyder added this:

“As Zack said, it’s been about just over four years in the making, developing these scripts and then having an in-house team of about 48 artists who developed all the characters and the worlds. In animation, nothing is for free. Every prop and everything, as you know, must be created. We were so lucky to be able to work with this group of very global artists.”

After the presentation, Moviefone had the pleasure of speaking briefly with Zack Snyder one on one about his new animated project.

Moviefone: To begin with, what drew you to adapting Norse mythology for this animated series?

Zack Snyder: Well, we’ve been talking about doing an animated project with Netflix. That had been a conversation that was going on. We had that conversation and are doing an ‘Army of the Dead’ animated series, so that was kind of happening at the same time. This happened because I think (Director) Jay (Oliva) and I were talking about how we both love Norse mythology; wouldn’t it be cool to do something in that world. We started talking to Netflix about it and they said, “Yeah, do that!” So that started us on the journey of developing it.

MF: Finally, I think fans have been waiting for you to adapt this specific mythology for a long time. Did it seem like a no-brainer for you too?

ZS: I think it was easy in us being excited every day. I wasn’t like, “I got to do that Norse mythology thing.” We were utterly and completely off the chain with (the animation) too, so that was cool.

  • First Look at James Gunn’s Superman Suited Up

    • James Gunn has revealed the first look at David Corenswet in ‘Superman’
    • The movie is still shooting in Atlanta.
    • ‘Superman’ will be in theaters on 11th July next year.

Given the intense scrutiny of James Gunn’s new ‘Superman’ film –– which, if not already burdened enough by having to launch the latest iteration of the DC superhero figurehead also has to cinematically kickstart the filmmaker’s vision for the overall DC movie and TV universe –– it’s hardly surprising that he chose to get out ahead of those wanting to snap a paparazzi shot of new star David Corenswet in his Superman suit.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C6ogjVERTl8/

In a fun twist from the usual Super-introduction, the shot appears to show Corenswet’s Clark Kent calmly pulling on one of his suit’s boots instead of the standard, all-action first look. And that’s despite some giant threat seemingly outside the window, looming over Metropolis. But we’ll say this: Corenswet certainly looks the part, though some fans are certainly drawing comparisons to Henry Cavill’s ‘Man of Steel’ look.

Filming has been underway on the movie for a couple of months now, with production happening in Norway for some Fortress of Solitude location work and its homebase of Atlanta.

Little is truly known about the plotline at this point, but Gunn has been clear that he’s eschewing the usual exploding home planet Krypton/arrival in Smallville origin story (though those will likely be referenced) in favor of more of a workplace film with Clark showing up to work at the Planet, where Lois will already be an established reporting star.

Peter Safran, Gunn’s co-chief of DC Studios (and a producer on the movie) said this about the new movie during the duo’s big announcement about DC films and series going forward:

“It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

    Who is appearing in ‘Superman’?

Alongside Corenswet as Clark Kent/Supes, Rachel Brosnahan will be Lois.

Also in the cast? Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardener), Isabela Mercad (Hawkgirl), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher) and María Gabriela de Faría (Angela Spica/The Engineer).

That’s the main ensemble; we can expect an appearance from Gunn’s brother Sean (a regular in his movies, who has played the likes of Kraglin and provided the on-set reference performance and voice for Rocket Raccoon in the ‘Guardians’ franchise) as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

And finally, Milly Alcock is likely to have a cameo as Kara/Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, ahead of her own movie debut.

    • Matt Damon and Casey Affleck are thieves in the first images from ‘The Instigators’.
    • Doug Liam directed the crime thriller.
    • The movie will land on Apple TV+ on August 9th.

We might most famously think of ‘Good Will Hunting’ in terms of Matt Damon and Casey Affleck sharing the screen (then alongside the latter’s brother Ben), but they were also both in ‘Oppenheimer’ last year.

But later in 2024, we’ll see them in meatier roles for a new crime thriller called ‘The Instigators’, in which they play two thieves pulling off a desperate robbery.

Apple TV+ was quick to snap this one up and has the first images from the movie online.

What’s the story of ‘The Instigators’?

Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses.

Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture –– or worse.

Affleck co-wrote the script with Chuck MacLean, and Doug Liman is in the director’s chair.

Here’s what Affleck told Entertainment Weekly about his inspirations:

“The inspiration for this was definitely ‘Midnight Run’ and ‘Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’. I’ve always wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”

And for Damon, this was a chance to reunite with his ‘Bourne Identity’ director. This is what he said:

“I absolutely love working with Doug. I can’t believe it took us 20 years to find something else to do together. Doug is one of the most creatively tenacious people I’ve ever met. He just won’t stop until the movie is as good as it can be, and that is the best possible thing you can feel from a director. I trust him completely.”

Who else is in ‘The Instigators’?

The movie also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman.

Here’s Affleck on how some of the cast fit in:

“‘The Instigators’ is about two strangers who are hired for a heist. They become frenemies and then become friends while Jack Harlow yells at us, Paul Walter Hauser insults us, Ving Rhames hunts us, and Hong Chau keeps us alive.”

When will ‘The Instigators’ land on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ will start streaming the new movie on August 9th. Hopefully Liman is already aware it’ll be going directly there; we don’t need another ‘Road House’ protest.

  • ‘Another Day in America’ Interview: Emilio Mauro

Natasha Henstridge in 'Another Day in America'.
Natasha Henstridge in ‘Another Day in America’.

Premiering at the Boston International Film Festival on April 14th is the new movie ‘Another Day in America,’ which was written and directed by Emilio Mauro (‘By the Gun’) and stars Alexis Knapp (‘Pitch Perfect’), Ritchie Coster (‘The Dark Knight’), Paul Ben-Victor (‘The Irishman’), and Natasha Henstridge (‘Species’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with writer and director Emilio Mauro about his work on ‘Another Day in America’, developing the screenplay, balancing the tones, casting, working with the actors, the festival circuit, his creative inspiration and what’s up next for him as a filmmaker.

Writer and Director Emilio Mauro on the set of ‘Another Day in America’.

Note: Some Spoilers for ‘Another Day in America’ below!

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about developing the screenplay and as a director what were some of the themes you were excited to explore?

Emilio Mauro: There was a shooting in Wakefield, Massachusetts in 1999 at a company called Edgewater Technologies. What I noticed about that shooting, even though shootings were still rare then, it was the first time I thought about the victims, and it’s because it happened the day after Christmas. But anyway, eight people died, and I just thought it was such an odd day to be in the office. I just thought about the people going in the office that day. It really affected me. This goes back almost 25 years now. I wrote myself into a corner saying, “This is how I want to end it. I want it to come out of nowhere. I want people to experience it the way people normally would experience a mass shooting, where they’re grocery shopping, or at a movie theater, or whatever, and this awful thing happens.” But then I’ve set these rules where, I want something that leaks into the office that’s cultural, and social. I didn’t want to make ‘Glengarry, Glen Ross,’ that ends up oddly. The tone of the film is where I really needed to hit home, and the pocket I needed to land in. It tonally makes sense after watching it, because I’m talking about America, about some of our social issues, some of our cultural issues, some hot topics, and things like that. As far as themes, I don’t even know if this is really a theme, but there is this age thing going on in the office, with this new attitude versus this old attitude, this patriarchy in this company, and maybe in our country, depending on how you see it, is crumbling. For good or bad, I’m not here to make people’s decisions up for them. That’s really one other thing I wanted to hit home, which is I didn’t want to be preachy. I really wanted both arguments to land as best I could. I think that’s a strength of mine as a writer, which is empathy. I said this in another interview, but I’m going to say it again. I don’t think you should be writing unless you can have some empathy for everyone, even if it’s a blockbuster. Thanos is a great character, so it’s okay to empathize a little bit. You can hate him, and you can root against him, but I think being a writer, being able to see his point of view, it makes for a better character. I think that’s another thing I wanted to land. But I said that if a million people watch this film, which I hope they do, I hope I get a million different point of views, or emotional responses, and that they all watch a different movie, in some way.

MF: The movie begins like an office comedy commenting on workplace culture and then becomes a drama about mental health and gun violence. Can you talk about the challenges of balancing the different tones?

EM: So, structurally, I’ll never write like this again, as a feature. It’s hard. There were no third act, there’s no turning points. The linkage and the craft that you learn as a screenwriter, it’s slightly thrown out the window. I wrote it episodically, you’ll notice there’s time slots, and every time I’m leading something towards the end, every time is an episode, in my mind. The goal was to smoke screen the audience a little bit, because I just wanted them to feel something. It’s almost a two-hour film. This whole entire film for me is a movie about a mass shooting. No mistake about it. What I’m trying to accomplish is to capture your attention. I’m trying to keep you involved, and I’m just using different genre elements to do it. Either it’s drama, or a dark comedy, or a satire, or whatever. Really that’s where it came from. It was slightly by design, but I started writing the first draft, and really it really came out like, “Oh, these guys are funny. These guys have some common banter.” But as I get closer to the end, I get more serious. There is someone who’s dealing with a breakup, who’s bipolar, and he’s miserable, and obviously he has his moment at the end. It was more of a genre balance, with a tone balance. I hate to call my film experimental, but it slightly was to me writing it. As far as directing it, it was simple, because there were so many carve outs within the actors. I didn’t really ask many actors to do two things, except for maybe one, and that was to be serious. Mostly they stayed in their pocket of either comedy, or satire, or drama, or a combination of both.

Natasha Henstridge and Alexis Knapp in 'Another Day in America'.
(L to R) Natasha Henstridge and Alexis Knapp in ‘Another Day in America’.

MF: The movie includes young actors and veteran actors; can you talk about putting together the cast?

EM: This is a pretty small film. I had these three tiers of actors, and there’s no disrespect for any of them. I think they all did great. I had these really working veteran actors, that work, and most likely probably pay their bills acting. Then I have these professional actors that haven’t broke through yet, and then I had complete unknowns, literally. Every approach was different. There are blueprints in the script, so they’re reading the script, but with certain actors there was a complete rewrite, and some actors wouldn’t change a word. Some actors came in, just because I wanted to work with them, and we created a character together. This is all from personal relationships, and then Oliver Trevena, who played Scott in the film, was a producer on the film. He helped me cast Natasha and Alexis, but everyone else I knew in some way. Domaine Javier, who played Star, was one of the only ones that was through a real casting process, where I had to look at audition tapes.

MF: What was it like for you directing accomplished actors such as Richie Coster, Paul Ben-Victor and Natasha Henstridge on set?

EM: They’re pros. They just make it so easy. They really do. I mean, I asked Richie a lot of questions, because he’s worked with Michael Mann. I’m like, “How’s it like working with Michael Mann?” Paul’s great. I mean, they’re all really pros. Just to see how they’re acting against each other was interesting. But a lot of my work with the actors were done in prep. I’d say 70% of what I do as a director is on the page. I think then the rest of it’s probably during prep, and there’s not much I do on set. I feel like I’m more of a manager of department heads, and I’m just tweaking. If I see something I’m like, “Oh, try it this way, or try it that way.” But it was game time, so they were all into it. It was game seven every day. They took it seriously, and it was great. I think that goes for the whole cast. I think some were just real pros and just wanted to do their job, as best they can, and some wanted to have something to prove, and wanted to do more work. But it was great working with those guys.

Writer and Director Emilio Mauro on the set of 'Another Day in America'.
(Center) Writer and Director Emilio Mauro on the set of ‘Another Day in America’.

MF: Can you talk about some of your creative influences as a writer and director?

EM: Well, Duke Ellington had the quote, “Art’s supposed to be dangerous.” I mean, it’s a wild film. I use hard language. I push areas that I call “outside the lines.” I don’t think I could have made it without Duke Ellington’s quote, to be honest with you. I was scared. Charlie Kaufman‘s quote was something that I saw, just when he was writing it, about how as artists, we’re storytellers, but we’re supposed to tell a truth. I’m not here to tell you how to believe, but I’m telling you a story and if that story resonates like, “I know that person,” or “I am that person,” I want my movie to be a mirror. I would love to go make a big blockbuster film, but I think it all must be mirrors. I’m a huge Marvel fan, so when I watch ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ I get emotional, when I hear “On your left”. So, I just feel like as storytellers we’re the shield of society, as artists. We’re supposed to present things and show things that other people can’t. I always say, “Don’t judge this as an op-ed. I’m not a journalist. If you do that, then please don’t watch the movie.” The other movies (that were inspirations) are simple. ‘Reservoir Dogs,’ just because at that time people were telling Tarantino, “You can’t say this, you can’t do that. You can’t do the ear thing.” Also, it all takes place in one location, somewhat. Mine does too. I think tonally, I always think how ‘American Beauty’ would play today. I think it’s a classic. I love it. It’s one of my favorite films. I feel like a lot of the DNA in ‘American Beauty’ leaks into here, in some capacity. Because it’s real. I think if you really breakdown ‘American Beauty,’ you got this guy in a midlife crisis, and the high school girl, so it’s real pushing the boundaries of art and storytelling. But also, ‘Chasing Amy’ was in there too, just because of the language. It’s easy to say David Mamet, but I get that a little bit. It’s such a compliment. Mamet’s great at dialogue, and a lot of people see this as a play, because it is 90% in the office. But I think that Duke Ellington quote’s the one that really hit home and gave me ultimately the courage to keep going. It’s a great quote.

MF: Finally, what has it been like taking ‘Another Day in America’ out to film festivals and what’s next for you as a filmmaker?

EM: The festival circuit’s been great. It’s new to me. All of this is new. I never directed before. I want to keep directing, and it’s good to get it out there, and to show a sample. Look, I don’t have a buyer. There’s no distributor. I have a good sales company, so hopefully a distributor picks it up and sees the potential in the film. I think it’s got a lot of viral material in there. I think that’s a good word to use, especially in today’s marketplace, everyone’s on their phones. My movie, in a very odd way, makes some statement about social media, and our iPhones, and how we consume content. But as far as what’s next, I want to make a bigger film. I am going to be blunt; this was hard. I admire 20-year-old film directors. I’m not 20. But I have a script called ‘Unsolved’. It’s making the rounds, and we’re organizing the producing team. I’d want to do less producing on my next film too. I really wore way too many hats. Then I got this TV series that I wrote, that takes place in an office. It’s about the mid 2000’s mortgage boom to crash and it’s loosely autobiographical. Obviously, I want to continue working, but I always said I did this film out of desperation. This is either day one or the last day, right? Because it’s a hard business, and I just wanted to go out with something that was me, and that represented me as an artist, as a writer, as a director, as a filmmaker, and I came close to it. I think I always said I wanted to make a contemporary 90s film. I’m pretty sure I did that. I’m proud of it, and everyone did great, and hopefully we can all keep working.

The upcoming Pixar animated feature ‘Inside Out 2’ will be in theaters on June 14, 2023. Moviefone was invited to Pixar Animation Studio in Emeryville, California, along with a group of journalists to preview the first 30 minutes of the film and get a closer look at the inner workings of creating an animated feature film.

Moviefone had the pleasure of screening the first 30 minutes of ‘Inside Out 2’. Chief Creative Officer of Pixar, Pete Docter (who directed 2015’s ‘Inside Out’) kicked things off by talking about using big backdrops for past animation movies. Docter speaks about stories using large backdrops such as the ocean or space in films such as ‘Finding Nemo‘ and ‘Lightyear,’ but with ‘Inside Out,’ it explores the vast mind of a young girl.

‘Inside Out 2’ director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen present the 30-minute footage. The director also clarified that some shots were not completely finished at the time of the presentation. Both Mann and Nielsen are now fathers of teenage girls and expressed that that made working on this film extra special and meaningful.

Mann says he could not stop thinking about the final line from Joy in the first film: “After all, Riley’s 12 now. What could happen?” as he began to work on this movie to explore Riley’s next chapter. ‘Inside Out 2’ will examine this stage of growing up – when a teenager’s self-consciousness and self-doubt are at the forefront of their emotions.

While Mann did not work on ‘Inside Out,’ he did experience the film as an audience. Now, as director, he’s able to go into the sequel and explore the next chapter with new emotions: “I’d zeroed in on the idea of Anxiety being a major character,” said Mann. “It’s something that really starts to appear as we become teenagers – we can “It’s something that really starts to appear as we become teenagers—we can all relate. I remember doing a lot of research early on about what happens in our brains at this age that triggered this idea of a wrecking ball coming through Headquarters — a bunch of workers piling in and tearing everything down. It’s a renovation — that’s kind of what it feels like to be a teenager. It’s chaotic.”

Anxiety brings along fellow new emotions: the always-admiring Envy, the ever-mortified Embarrassment, and Ennui, who is in a constant state of boredom and disdain, opting to lay on a couch and stare at the phone rather than interact with the group.

The presentation kicks off with Riley’s hockey game, and inside Headquarters, the Emotions are gearing up for the big game. As Joy commands the console, she also doubles as a sports commentator as she gives the play-by-play. The other Emotions take turns at the console as the game continues – Anger when Riley needs to be more aggressive on the ice; Disgust when Riley accidentally puts someone else’s mouthguard in her mouth; Fear ensures Riley skates with caution; and Sadness when Riley gets a penalty. This is followed by a short exposition where Joy catches the audience up on what Riley’s been up to and gives a quick overview of the workings parts inside her mind, such as Personality Island, Friendship Island, and more.

The scene introduces something new called Riley’s Sense of Self. It blooms as Riley experiences various successes and failures — like scoring a goal or missing a pass from a teammate. The Emotions call this their masterpiece.

After the game, Riley and her two best friends are approached by a high school hockey coach to commend them on a well-played game and extend an invitation to hockey camp. This is where we’ll see Riley’s self-doubt come into play as she grows anxious and nervous about her performance at hockey camp. Joy has invented a “Riley Protection System” for moments like this — where she takes the “bad” emotions and launches them out of Headquarters and into the back of Riley’s mind.

Another new element introduced is the Belief Center, adorned with beautiful light threads made from Riley’s beliefs, which is where Joy stores the key memories.

In the middle of the night, the console begins beeping. One by one, the Emotions awake to investigate the sound. A new button on the console is causing the beep – we come to find out this button is “Puberty.” Amidst the chaos of the demolition of Headquarters, the Emotion finds that the control console has become increasingly sensitive, causing Riley’s mood to surge from one spectrum to the other with even the slightest touch of a button. If things weren’t crazy enough, new Emotions, Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, arrive at this moment.

During the commotion, an Emotion we have yet to see makes a quick appearance, hinting at what’s to come for Riley in her adult life, but we won’t spoil that moment for you here. We also get a quick glimpse inside Riley’s mom’s mind as Riley experiences mood swings, “Welp, that’s a preview of the next 10 years.”

While talking to her best friends on their way to hockey camp, we get a better look at Riley’s self-consciousness taking over her mind. Disgust overanalyzes everything they say, including zooming in on her friends’ faces to study their expressions. It turns out that her friends would not be attending the same high school as Riley next year, causing a small rift in their friendship.

Arriving at hockey camp, the girls are enamored by being around high school students. They meet Valentina “Val” Ortiz, the captain of the high school hockey team. With both old and new Emotions now sharing the console, Riley’s first meeting with Val quickly becomes awkward, from a very cheesy greeting with “shooting” hand gestures to nonchalant responses courtesy of Ennui.

Joy and Anxiety fight over Riley’s Sense of Self, as they do not see eye-to-eye on how to best handle social situations at hockey camp among high school-aged girls, as well as whether she should be hanging out with the hockey team or her best friends. Anxiety’s approach is to “plan for the future” which would mean Riley should hang out with her potential future teammates, whereas Joy chose to stay with what’s familiar – Riley’s friends.

With Joy and Anxiety unable to agree on the best way to help Riley, Anxiety ends up throwing the old Emotions inside a bottle and launching them out of Headquarters. Then, she announces her plan to build a brand new Riley. The new Emotions heads down to the Belief Center to begin the rebuild, and we see the straight, shining threads turn into sharp, jagged lines—similar to Anxiety’s hair.

The old Emotions find themselves inside a dark vault, where some of Riley’s oldest memories – and perhaps some secret – lie. This scene includes two new characters in a very different art style – a 2D animation-style character reminiscent of ‘Dora the Explorer’ and ‘Blue’s Clue’ and a 3D polygonal character whom the Emotions ask for help getting out of the vault and return to Headquarters.

What It Takes To Create ‘Inside Out 2’

Following the footage presentation, journalists were split into various groups and guided into the working offices of the Pixar campus for an in-depth look at what it takes to create the sequel.

First up was character development with Production Designer Jason Deamer and Character Art Director Keiko Murayama. They speak about the process of creating an Emotion by studying their Shape Language – like Anxiety who is more tightly wind-up and Joy who has more of a star-burst shape. Color and silhouette are looked at as well in character creation. One of the bigger challenges in creating the sequel is that it must look and feel like the first film, and it took around a year and a half to get it to look just right.

Next up is Story Pitch with Story Artist Becca McVeigh, who took us through the process of being assigned to a scene, animating it, and pitching it to the director. McVeigh live-pitched the scene called ‘The Alarm,’ where the Emotions are awoken by a strange beeping sound coming from the console. During the story pitch, artists will not only draw the sequence of the scene but also act out the dialogue and sound effects. After the pitch, director Kelsey Mann is there to give his notes, and they will run through the animated scene with McVeigh making changes right there on the spot – from adding more jokes or adjusting the dialogue of important moments to elevate the film further.

Following the story pitch is the live edit session, where ‘Inside Out 2’ lead editor Maurissa Horwitz demonstrates how the editors piece together a scene, from layering various sound effects to make the scenes sound fuller to choosing the right music for scenes and picking the perfect dialogue performance.

Journalists also got a try at voicing a character in the movie in a mock voice recording session directed by a senior recording engineer.

The next stop was Virtual Camera Set Scout, where Adam Habib, Ryan Heuett, and Sunguk Chun gave an inside look at how being on a digital set in a Pixar film can parallel being on a physical set in a live-action film. The team used a tablet on a handheld rig, which functions just as a camera that allows the director and editors to move around anywhere on the set to find the right shot. This technology allows for over-the-shoulder shots, birds-eye view, and more. It can even give certain scenes a specific camera language. For example, Anxiety will be a more handheld-type, up-close shots and have less motion blur – with Heuett referencing the inspiration from ‘Uncut Gems’. In this session, journalists got to operate the handheld rig to virtually “walk” around the emotions’ Headquarter.

The final stop is Animation Polish Review, where animators will go over a specific shot they’ve been working on, addressing the various notes and changes before receiving final notes or approvals. This process takes a close look at the detail elements such as fabric movement and wrinkle, ice particles on a hockey rink, and more.

Just like the Emotions and Mindworkers inside Riley’s mind, it takes a team and a lot of coordination to create an animated feature film.

‘Inside Out 2’ will arrive in theaters on June 14, 2024.
