Ezra Miller Rewriting ‘The Flash’ Movie Script to Keep the Role

    Warner Bros.

Ezra Miller really, really wants to keep playing The Flash. So much so that he is teaming up with DC Comics writer Grant Morrison to pen his own script for “The Flash” standalone movie.

Miller stole scenes as the Scarlet Speedster (real name: Barry Allen) in “Justice League,” so it was only natural for the character to gets his own movie. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein boarded the project in January 2018.

However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the directors and star have clashing visions for the film. Daley and Goldstein — who previously made “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Game Night” — plan to take a light-hearted, fun approach. That’s more in line with the direction that DC/Warner Bros. movies are taking after the success of “Aquaman” and the positive buzz for the upcoming “Shazam!”

But Miller reportedly wants a darker take on the story. Now, in an extremely unusual move, he’s writing a version of the script himself with Morrison.

If Warner Bros. doesn’t go with Miller’s script, he may end up speeding away from “The Flash” altogether.  THR notes his holding deal for the movie expires in May.

Then again, the studio seems to have no problem rebooting even recently-occupied characters. Ben Affleck retired as Batman and Idris Elba may replace Will Smith in “Suicide Squad.” Miller, meanwhile, still has a big franchise to call home, as one of the stars of the “Fantastic Beasts” saga.

OK, but now “Arrow” fans are pushing to see Stephen Amell in a “Supergirl” suit.

That kind of “Freaky Friday” wish was just one reaction to The CW’s intriguing new “Elseworlds” poster teasing this year’s crossover event — where “Destiny Will Be Rewritten.”

You know the Arrowverse shows (or at least a few of them) have themed crossovers every year. This year, “The Flash,” “Arrow,” and “Supergirl” are holding a three-day event from December 9-11.

The “Elseworlds” special will feature a trip to Gotham City to team up with newcomer Batwoman (Ruby Rose). Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Bitsie Tulloch) will also be there, along with Cassandra Jean Amell as Nora Fries, wife of Batman villain Mr. Freeze.

Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin normally play Oliver Queen/Arrow and Barry Allen/The Flash, but they showed their swapped roles when sharing the crossover poster on social media:

Fans had a lot of reactions to the Flash/Arrow switch — confusion, excitement, pride that they guessed right, and some clever call-backs to past references:

  • ‘The Flash’ Movie Production Delayed, Eyeing 2021 Release Date

    Warner Bros.

The Flash isn’t racing into theaters anytime soon.

Warner Bros. is delaying the start of production on the still untitled standalone movie centered on the speedster character, played by Ezra Miller in “Justice League.”

According to Variety, even though the film never received a formal greenlight, it was due to begin filming in March. Now, filming is more likely to commence in late 2019, for a 2021 release.

The delay is reportedly all Harry Potter’s fault, or we should the Harry Potter universe. Miller has a key role in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, and the third film is set to begin filming in July. That would’ve caused major scheduling headaches had The Flash movie started this spring.

Earlier this year, Warner Bros. replaced director Rick Famuyiwa (“Dope”), who had left the project due to creative differences, with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

The DC Extended Universe has plenty going on, even with The Flash’s delay. “Aquaman” and “Shazam” are coming soon, and everyone is excitedly waiting for “Wonder Woman 1984” in November 2019.

The Arrowverse isn’t just going elsewhere, it’s going “Elseworlds.”

The CW released a new poster for its annual DC crossover event, which will tie together “Arrow,” “The Flash,” and “Supergirl” over three nights this December. The poster revealed the event’s title: “Elseworlds.”

That’s a nod to a special imprint of titles that took place outside the regular DC universe (like one in which Batman hunted Jack the Ripper in Victorian-era England).

The poster also teased the Bat logo, since the event will take the heroes to Gotham, where they’re introduced to Batwoman (Ruby Rose).Cassandra Jean Amell has also been cast as Nora Fries, the wife of famous Bat-villain Mr. Freeze.

Tyler Hoechlin is also reprising his role as Superman, and fans will get to meet Lois Lane (Bitsie Tulloch). And LaMonica Garrett (“Designated Survivor”) will play Mar Novu aka The Monitor, “an extraterrestrial being of infinite power.” In the comics, Monitors intervened in crises in the Multiverse.

The Arrowverse crossover event will air Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11,

The CW’s annual Arrowverse crossover event just got faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive!

Tyler Hoechlin will fly in to reprise his role as Superman, which he originated on “Supergirl.” And that show’s producers are casting an actress to play Lois Lane, as well.

“We couldn’t be more excited to introduce Lois Lane to the Arrowverse. This dogged, determined and brave reporter will make for a strong partner to Superman and amazing addition to our universe of DC characters,” said “Supergirl” executive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner.

Hoechlin will appear on all three nights of the DC Comics crossover, which kicks off with a special screening of “The Flash” on Sunday, Dec. 9, continues with “Arrow” on Dec. 10, and concludes with “Supergirl” on Dec. 11.

This year’s crossover also introduces Kate Kane aka Batwoman, a lesbian superhero played by Ruby Rose.

  • The CW Renews 10 Series Including ‘Riverdale,’ ‘Jane the Virgin,’ ‘Supernatural’

Looks like The CW was feeling generous this week: The network renewed 10 of its series for additional seasons.

The buzziest of the bunch is “Riverdale,” the modern-day twist on the “Archie” comic series, which will be back for season three in the fall. And there’s good news for some shows that were on the bubble, too: “Jane the Virgin” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” also made the renewal cut, despite dismal ratings.

Both “Jane” (which will be back for season five) and “CXG” (which will be back for season four) are likely to end their runs after those episodes, since producers had previously discussed having those specific number of seasons in mind when planning out their shows’ respective story arcs. Plus, “JtV” star Gina Rodriguez already spilled the beans about her series’s impending end.

Not likely to end anytime soon, though? The CW’s lineup of DC superhero series, which are all returning for the 2018-2019 season. And the Winchester brothers are proving that “Grey’s Anatomy” isn’t the only TV drama that can hang around for over a decade: “Supernatural” has been picked up for a 14th season.

The full list of renewed shows includes: “Arrow” (Season 7), “Black Lightning” (Season 2), “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (Season 4), “Dynasty” (Season 2), “Legends of Tomorrow” (Season 4), “The Flash” (Season 5), “Jane the Virgin” (Season 5), “Riverdale” (Season 3), “Supergirl” (Season 4), and “Supernatural” (Season 14 ).

The flurry of renewals comes as The CW amps up its original programming, expanding into Sunday nights. No word yet on the fate of the just-moved freshman series “Life Sentence,” though with so much time to fill, the network may yet wind up throwing that show another season, too. Stay tuned.
