  • Why did ‘The Flash’ Flop at the Box Office?

For a moment there, it looked like ‘The Flash’, a remnant of the “Snyderverse” set of DC movies that Warner Bros. (now Warner Bros. Discovery) had pinned its hopes on, would speed to victory.

The signs were good, despite a long, long development process that had seen directors including John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (who moved on to make ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves‘) come and go.

But with a positive reaction out of April’s CinemaCon event (where even journalists’ social media had been mostly glowing) and ringing endorsements from an eclectic group that included Stephen King, incoming DC Studios boss James Gunn, and superstar/theatrical experience cheerleader Tom Cruise), hopes were higher that final director Andy Muschietti had pulled something off that might be embraced by audiences.

And yet… ‘The Flash’ opened to a dismal $55 million over the June 16th-18th weekend, on par with past DC bomb ‘Watchmen’ ($55.2 million) and not far ahead of infamous stumble ‘Green Lantern’ ($53.5 million), not adjusted for inflation.

    What happened with ‘The Flash’?

In defense of the movie (which we reviewed positively), it was facing an uphill battle. It was a lesser-known character who, despite some comic book recognition a long-running, popular TV series and appearances in the different cuts of the ‘Justice League’ movie, wasn’t a proven draw on its own yet.

Star Ezra Miller, who had played the role with charm and humor against some of the more serious superheroes, didn’t help, racking up a string of controversial personal crises we won’t reheat here, but had been trying to resuscitate their personal reputation with apologies and seeking mental health treatment. They were also mostly kept away from promotion for the film.

Another issue was the movie’s delayed release, which kept it shifting around the schedules.

And finally, the worrying fear of superhero fatigue, which has impacted both DC and Marvel movies of late.

Audiences really do seem to be tiring of watching costumed heroes running/flying around, sprawling parallel dimension stories with endless heroes popping out of portals and big CGI-laden finales.

Even the star name endorsements didn’t move the PR needle.

One veteran studio executive had this to say to The Hollywood Reporter on that:

“It is unfathomable to me why Zas [WBD CEO David Zaslav] and James Gunn promise how wonderful any picture or new plan will be months into the future. The public doesn’t care and isn’t aware of their prognostications. Let the product talk.”

Word of mouth wasn’t great even when it did open –– audiences handed out a B Cinemascore, and reviews were more mixed closer to its arrival.

Said Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian to the Reporter about the movie:

“‘The Flash’ unfortunately had a rough road to the multiplex and given the complexities and challenges of the marketing and positioning of the film in the marketplace, the number one debut is actually a solid result for the latest from DC Comics in such a crowded and competitive summer season.”

Yet ‘The Flash’ wasn’t the only movie facing problems on its release. Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ also didn’t manage to make much of a dent at the box office.

The latest movie from the animation powerhouse, long considered a champion at the box office, delighting audiences and growing a huge fanbase with its work, had been going through its own relative rough patch.

Corporate parent Disney had not exactly safeguarded the studio’s films –– during the pandemic, it was understandable why movies such a ‘Soul’ and ‘Luca’ might have been pushed to streaming service Disney+, but once theaters started to open up again and audiences seemed happier returning to the movies, it was less defensible for the likes of ‘Turning Red’ to debut primarily on small screens.

    Ohqm8sLpQU559qc2ATHM04

So as ‘Elemental’ –– set in a world of living elements and featuring a love story between the fiery Ember (Leah Lewis) and watery Wade (Mamoudou Athie) –– debuted over the same weekend as ‘The Flash’ with the second-lowest three-day opening (for a wide release) in studio history at an estimated $29.5 million.

The only Pixar film to ever make less than ‘Elemental ‘over a three-day opening was the original ‘Toy Story’, which made $29.1 million over its first three-day weekend. And there’s really no comparing the two, since ‘Toy Story’ opened in 1995, when cinema tickets were much less expensive, debuted on 1,500 fewer screens than ‘Elemental’.

It also follows the poor performance of last year’s ‘Lightyear’, the movie (with its loose ‘Toy Story’ connections) that was supposed to have brought Pixar soaring back to theatrical. Instead, it crashed and burned, and several of the people who worked on the movie lost their jobs in the latest round of Disney layoffs.

    Original thinking

‘Elemental’, of course, had no such connections to help sell it, but its originality was also seen as its own positive: in a world of sequels, reboots and franchises, it could help boost the cause of films not based on IP. Unfortunately, the relative lack of recognition (even from a hugely popular team such as Disney/Pixar) didn’t get people into theaters.

The new movie did at least warrant an A from Cinemascore’s polling of cinema customers, which points to potential legs, especially since there aren’t a lot of family movies headed our way at the moment.

    The future

Both Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney/Pixar are unlikely to be too affected by all of this drama, aside from when they have to justify spending to shareholders. Both companies have a robust slate on hand (albeit impacted by the ongoing WGA strike) and plenty of money to spend on upcoming releases.

Warners has ‘Blue Beetle’ and the ‘Aquaman’ sequel ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ waiting in the wings and is keeping its fingers crossed that Gunn can rejuvenate its superhero fortunes with his new DC Studios output. Disney has many subsidiaries to generate movies and income, and Pixar has its next movie, ‘Elio’, scheduled to arrive next March (like ‘Elemental’ it is once again gambling on another original story). And we’re not likely to see the end of the comic book genre or animated movies anytime soon. But there are surely lessons to be learned from both of these flops.

The Flash’ is set to speed into theaters next week and the word is very positive on director Andy Muschietti’s first stab at the DC comic book universe. And if a new report from One Take News works out, he’ll be hanging around that universe for a while to come as he’s set to direct ‘The Brave and the Bold’.

    exwPuru5PnwtNU0UNgy8i

What is ‘The Brave and the Bold’?

Announced by DC Studios co-CEO/filmmaker James Gunn, ‘The Brave and the Bold’ will represent one of the key tentpoles of Gunn and Peter Safran’s initial phase taking over the comic book movie universe at Warner Bros. Discovery.

It’s a Batman story that revolves around a character from the comics that has appeared in other mediums but would be making is live-action movie debut here.

Gunn said this about the movie,

“This is a story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman’s actual son, who we didn’t know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He’s a little son of a bitch. He’s my favorite Robin, based on the Grant Morrison comic books run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now.”

There are no other details out about the movie for now –– no word on who might be writing it, and that’s something likely to wait regardless given the current writers’ strike. It’ll also represent a casting challenge as, yet another actor will be filling the cowl as Batman, with the movie planning to introduce more of the so-called “Bat family” of characters around Bruce Wayne/the Caped Crusader.

Muschietti, of course, is no stranger to Batman –– there are two (that we know of at this point) in ‘The Flash’, as trailers have already heavily shown both Ben Affleck’s take on the character and, even more prominently, Michael Keaton’s. The latter reprises his iconic version first seen in the 1989 game changer ‘Batman’ and 1992’s ‘Batman Returns’, both directed by Tim Burton.

And from the sounds of it, ‘The Flash’ has been figured out so as to create some sort of link between the current DCEU as kicked off by Zach Snyder and Gunn’s future plans for the DC Studios Universe. Which sounds like quite the feat to pull off for one movie.

Assuming it comes through, this would mark the third director to board a DC Studios project. Gunn has already announced that he’s directing ‘Superman: Legacy’, which will be a fresh take on the Superman story, while James Mangold is attached to make a ‘Swamp Thing’ film.

‘The Flash’ will be in theaters on 16th June. ‘The Brave and the Bold’ does not yet have a set date.

Opening in theaters on June 16th is the highly awaited new DC Studios movie ‘The Flash,’ which was directed by Andy Muschietti (‘It’) and written by Christina Hodson (‘Birds of Prey’).

What is the plot of ‘The Flash?’

In ‘The Flash,’ Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller) travels back in time to prevent his mother’s death, which traps him in an alternate reality without metahumans. Barry enlists the help of his younger self (also Miller), an older Batman (Michael Keaton) and the Kryptonian castaway Supergirl (Sasha Calle) in order to save this world from the restored General Zod (Michael Shannon) and return to his universe.

    GqvjtiR1Skzdp96PgxYKv5

Who is in the cast of ‘The Flash’?

‘The Flash’ stars Ezra Miller (‘Justice League’) as Barry Allen/The Flash, Michael Keaton (‘Batman Returns’) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Ben Affleck (‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Sasha Calle (‘The Young and the Restless’) as Supergirl, Michael Shannon (‘Man of Steel’) as General Zod, Antje Traue (‘Man of Steel’) as Faora-UI, Kiersey Clemons (‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’) as Iris West, Ron Livingston (‘Office Space’) as Henry Allen, and Maribel Verdu (‘Raymond & Ray’) as Nora Allen.

    Initial Thoughts

Believe the hype! ‘The Flash’ is one of the best comic book adapted films ever made. Director Andy Muschietti reinvents the DC universe by brilliantly adapting the ‘Flashpoint‘ storyline from the comics, and fusing it with Michael Keaton’s ‘Batman’ and other nods to DC’s cinematic past. The movie is an exciting, action-packed, and humorous celebration of the DC Comics characters, with a brilliant dual performance from Ezra Miller, and of course, Keaton’s triumphant return.

    Story and Direction

For those not familiar, ‘Flashpoint’ was a 2011 DC Comics storyline that involved the Flash going back in time to save his mother’s life. When he returns, his world is not the same, he no longer has his powers, Thomas Wayne is Batman instead of Bruce, a weakened Superman is secretly being kept prisoner by the government, and Atlantis and Themyscira are at war. ‘The Flash’ follows a similar storyline with Barry losing his powers and needing to regain them, but instead of Thomas Wayne being Batman, its Michael Keaton from Tim Burton’s ‘Batman.’ It’s also a weakened Supergirl they break-out of captivity instead of Superman, and Earth is in danger from an attack by General Zod and the Kryptonians not a war between Atlantis and the Amazons.

None of these changes affect the power of the story, and the lesson Barry learns about excepting your past and living in the present. But they do allow general audiences to understand the story a little easier, as they are likely more familiar with Michael Keaton’s Batman than the sudden appearance of Thomas Wayne. In the comics, the ‘Flashpoint’ storyline was used to usher in a new continuity, and in that sense, ‘The Flash’ comes at the perfect time for DC Studios, as the film officially marks the end of the DCEU and the beginning of the new DCU. The movie honors the DCEU, as well as other cinematic DC projects from the past, while setting up an exciting future for these characters.

Director Andy Muschietti clearly loves these characters and retells the ‘Flashpoint’ story well, streamlining it into a tight, fast-paced, and dramatic movie. He also injects the film with a good amount of humor, but it never feels cheesy or forced and aligns with the characters. The filmmaker also handles the time-traveling aspects of the movie very well and in a coherent way, something Marvel struggled to do in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Muschietti does a great job with the effects, especially Barry’s powers and the Speed Force. Super-speed has never looked like this before, and Muschietti and his VFX team take a completely new approach to it, which is much different than the slow-motion effects Zack Snyder used.

    Ezra Miller’s Dual Performance

A lot has been written about Ezra Miller over the last few years concerning their brushes with the law and whether this movie should be released at all given their illegal activities. I’m not going to get into any of that, and just judge them on their performance in this film, which was nothing short of extraordinary. Miller plays two roles, the Barry Allen we all know and have seen mature through appearances in ‘Batman v. Superman’ and ‘Justice League.’ But Miller also plays a younger Barry Allen, who has not yet become the Flash and lives in this new alternate reality. Most of Miller’s scenes are with themself, and you truly believe they are two different people.

Our Barry is a bit older and wiser, and not as impulsive as when we first met them, but the new Barry is young and immature, and it’s fun watching the two of them interact. As both characters, Miller has great chemistry with Keaton and Sasha Calle, as well as a few strong scenes with Kiersey Clemons’ Iris West. In some ways, Miller plays a third role in the movie as well, but to say too much would be a spoiler, so I’ll just say that they are equally impressive and believable in that role too. Whether Miller will ever return to play Barry Allen again is yet to be seen, but if they do not return, it certainly won’t be because their performance in this film was lacking.

    Michael Keaton’s Return

I was just a kid when ‘Batman’ was released, so for me … Michael Keaton will always be Batman, and his return in this movie is a very welcomed one. While I really liked Ben Affleck’s Batman, and the actor does a great job in this movie in his limited role, the film really kicks into high gear when Keaton is on screen. He reprises his particular version of Bruce Wayne and Batman effortlessly, and while he has some funny moments, brings a lot of emotion and heart to the role. Keaton is also great in the action scenes, including an early fight scene between him and Miller. Muschietti perfectly matches Wayne Maynor, the Batmobile, the Batwing, and the costumes to the look and aesthetic Tim Burton originally created.

    Supergirl and General Zod

Sasha Calle breathes fresh air into the role of Supergirl, which is a much different and darker depiction than we’ve seen before. The actress is strong and believable in the part, and also plays the role in a mysterious way as to never really know her true intentions and keep the audience guessing. Calle has a few fun scenes opposite Miller and Keaton, but most of her work is in the action sequences and that’s where she really excels in the role. It’s also fun to see Michael Shannon return as General Zod, and he’s just as menacing now as he was in ‘Man of Steel,’ but other than the big fight sequence, he doesn’t have a whole lot to do. The Kryptonians are a real threat to our heroes, and that certainly adds to the drama and suspense.

The Multiverse, DC Easter Eggs and Cameos

DC fans have seen the multiverse approached on both the Arrowverse’s ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ crossover event, and more recently on ‘Titans,’ but visually, Muschietti depicts it in a way that is much more cinematic than we’ve seen on TV. The multiverse also makes sense in this movie and you can actually follow along with what’s happening, which wasn’t always the case with Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Because of the multiverse angle, Muschietti was able to sprinkle in a lot of cameos, most of which I won’t discuss here. I’ll just say that archival DC footage was used well, and those cameos are nice nods to what has come before.

There are a few cameos that I will mention since it is already public knowledge they are in the film. As previously mentioned, Ben Affleck returns as Batman, and as seen in the recent trailer, Jeremy Irons is also back as Alfred. Affleck recently let it slip on a podcast that a certain cast member from ‘Justice League’ would be returning for the film as well. I won’t say who incase you don’t know yet, but it is awesome seeing them interact with Affleck and Miller as members of the Justice League early in the film.

The other cameo I will mention, and only because director Andy Muschietti spoiled it a few weeks ago, is that an actor long rumored to play Superman finally gets the opportunity with a cameo in ‘The Flash’ as an alternate universe version of the Man of Steel. Beyond it being something fans have literally wanted to see for decades, the actor in question is magnificent in his brief role, and fans familiar with the canceled Superman project, will truly get a laugh from watching the scene.

    The New DCU

There is actually one other major cameo that I will absolutely not spoil, but I will just say that it is a true shocker of an ending, and something people will be talking about all summer long. It also sets the stage for the new DCU, and completely changes the status quo. Whether that actor or actress will continue to play that specific DC character moving forward, is still anybody’s guess. While the film has a very satisfying conclusion, much like the ‘Flashpoint’ comic, it definitely cleans the slate and sets the stage perfectly for James Gunn’s new DCU, whether that was Muschietti original intent or not.

Are There Any End-Credit Scenes in ‘The Flash’?

Yes. There is a mid-credit scene, which takes a look at an earlier scene in the movie from a different point of view, and is mostly played for laughs. But there is also an end-credit scene and I will just say that it helps to explain how the upcoming ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ takes place in the new DCU.

    Final Thoughts

The really pulled it off! ‘The Flash’ is the most entertaining and satisfying DC movie in decades. Andy Muschietti masterfully adapts the source material and fills it with as many Easter eggs, callbacks and cameos as any fan could desire. While still delivering a coherent, fun, action-packed and emotional movie, that features a mesmerizing dual performance from Miller, and the return of the one and only Michael Keaton as Batman. This is one movie DC Comics fans will not want to miss!

‘The Flash’ receives 10 out of 10 stars.

Before you read any more of this story, we would caution you to wait until you’ve seen ‘The Flash’, the stand-alone movie for Ezra Miller’s speedy DC hero, which will run into theaters on June 16th. A major cameo will be discussed below, and we’d hate for anyone to be spoiled.

    SPOILER ALERT!

Still with us? Okay… While ‘The Flash’ is already bursting with DC characters including Michael Keaton reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman from Tim Burton‘s ‘Batman‘ and ‘Batman Returns,’ Ben Affleck as the Snyderverse version of the same character, Michael Shannon as a multiverse variant of ‘Man of Steel’s General Zod (alongside Antje Traue’s return as his faithful lieutenant, Faora-UI) and Sasha Calle as a new version of Supergirl, the movie promises several more, and possibly the biggest has been confirmed by director Andy Muschietti.

Talking with Esquire Middle East, Muschietti revealed that Nicolas Cage is appearing in a cameo as Superman.

Here’s what Muschietti had to say,

“Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it. I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon. He is a massive Superman fan. A comic book fanatic.”

Was Nic Cage going to play Superman in the past?

Yes, Cage is finally realizing a long-held dream to play the last son of Krypton in a movie. While this is only a cameo, he got close to playing the character in a cancelled movie called ‘Superman Lives’.

Originally written by Kevin Smith (among others), the movie was planned for Renny Harlin to direct and for Cage to star as what he has described as an “emo” Superman will long black hair and a darker suit.

Cage, though –– who is such a fan of the character that he named one of his kids Kal-El after Supes’ Kryptonian moniker and once owned a copy of ‘Action Comics #1’, which features the first ever appearance of the superhero –– thought that Tim Burton, who had brought such style to his ‘Batman’ films, might be a better fit.

While it got to the stage of Cage going through suit fittings (you can see video of that here) creative differences and budget issues eventually derailed the movie in 1999. The ill-fated production was chronicled in the 2015 documentary ‘The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? .’

Yet Cage did end up playing Superman once, albeit in animated form in 2018 ‘toon movie ‘Teen Titans GO! To the Movies’. Now, though, he has his dream come true at last.

There are more secrets to be found lurking within the ‘Flash’ movie, but you’ll have to wait and see them for yourself.

What is the plot of ‘Double Life?’

Sharon Setter (Pascale Hutton), a grieving widow learns from her late husband’s mistress, Jo Creuzot (Javicia Leslie) that his death was no accident. The two women will form an unlikely alliance to uncover the truth behind his murder and unmask the man (Niall Matter) that they both loved.

    ztmIS3Uubxc4q5rB7TF7M6

Who is in the cast of ‘Double Life?’

‘Double Life’ stars Pascale Hutton (‘The Unspoken’) as Sharon Setter, Javicia Leslie (‘Batwoman’) as Jo Creuzot, Carmen Moore (‘The Flash’) as Detective Carmen Traxler, John Cassini (‘Se7en’) as Louis Strand, Vincent Gale (‘Firewall’) as Larry, Aaron Douglas (‘Battlestar Galactica’) as Sheldon Roberts, and Niall Matter (‘Watchmen’) as Mark Setter.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Javicia Leslie about her work on ‘Double Life,’ the plot, its 90’s vibe, her approach to her character, working with actress Pascale Hutton, the unusual bond between their characters, and reprising her ‘Batwoman’ role as Ryan Wilder on the final season of ‘The Flash.’

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interview with Javicia Leslie about ‘Double Life’ and ‘The Flash.’

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your approach to playing Jo Creuzot, and what were some of the aspects of the character that you were excited to explore on screen?

Javicia Leslie: So, my approach with playing Jo, it’s funny because I’ve been a bartender many times. On ‘Batwoman’ I was a bartender, and on ‘God Friended me’ I was a bartender, so it was kind of funny to get another role playing a bartender. But I think there’s something about that energy, specifically a person that knows how to get in the mix of things and knows how to make things work no matter what, and knows how to keep the ball rolling no matter what. I think that’s an element that Jo has throughout this movie, throughout the story, is that, “Okay, things didn’t necessarily go the way she expected, but how can we keep going? How can we figure this out? How can we make things happen?” One of the things that I was excited by, but I was also nervous by, was maybe not necessarily being the good guy, because I’m kind of used to being the good guy. So when I read the script, I was like, “Okay, how do I feel about this?” But I immediately accepted it. I immediately took it in and I played with it, and I had fun with it because one of my teachers always says, “A murderer can love his children.” You’re complex as a human being, and you have to play with all those complexities. I had a lot of fun with that with this project.

MF: Can you talk about when Jo discovers the truth about her boyfriend, and how that moves her forward feeling both grief and betrayal?

JL: Yeah, because I think there’s a moment in the film where there’s a realization that even though this isn’t what I thought it was, I still love this person. We all go through that. We all sometimes fall in love with the wrong person, and we can’t change how we feel about them. So I think the reveal definitely took her for a spin, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t change what their story was before that happened. And how real that was. I think she questioned, was it real? But when you know it’s real, you know it’s real. It is what it is. They had a secret, but we all have secrets. That’s kind of what this movie’s about is all of our secrets.

MF: Can you talk about the unusual friendship that Jo and Sharon form while trying to solve this mystery?

JL: It’s a bit of ‘Thelma and Louise’ action, except we don’t go off the cliff. I think that obviously they have a commonality and they both really start to realize there’s something that obviously he saw on you, and something he saw on me. They’re good people. Joe and Sharon are good people, so it doesn’t surprise me that at least in the beginning, they probably thought a friendship could develop. So, I think that that’s the beautiful part of this. Yeah, we’re telling the story of these two “junior detectives” that are going out trying to solve the murder mystery, but really we’re telling a story of this beautiful female friendship that goes through this journey within however long the film is. To see these two women, because sometimes we tell these stories and women are fighting, and they don’t come together at the end. It’s always about a guy or the guy is a hero, and that’s not this story, and I love that.

MF: What was it like working with Pascale Hutton on that relationship?

JL: So much fun. I didn’t know Pascale before this project. It’s funny because when you first meet someone, you’re kind of just figuring out their energy and who they are. I’m a Gemini, so I immediately figure out how I can fit into their world versus the opposite. So I’m immediately like, “Okay, well what can I do to make sure she’s comfortable and make sure I’m comfortable, so that we can tell the story?” I didn’t have to do that at all. Pascale’s the kind of person, she’s so open and available and takes you as you are. We spent so much time laughing, making jokes and making fun of our characters sometimes. You know what I mean? Like, “Girl, you know you wouldn’t do this. You know I wouldn’t do that.” She’s Canadian, so she’s laughing at me because I’m always cold. It was just really a great experience, and she was a part of it being such a great experience.

MF: You mentioned ‘Thelma and Louise’ and the movie definitely has a ‘90s thriller vibe, can you talk about that?

JL: I don’t know that it was technically set to be that vibe, but that’s what I felt and that’s what I fell in love with. I loved thrillers from the ’90s, especially with Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts. Oh my God, do you remember when Sandra Bullock did ‘The Net?’ Like those types of films where it’s so high-paced, I like that kind of energy. So, to be able to be a part of those stories is really cool.

MF: Finally, what was it like for you to have a chance to reprise your role as Ryan Wilder from ‘Batwoman’ on the final season of ‘The Flash?’

JL: It was an honor. You know what’s funny? I didn’t come back on ‘The Flash’ as Batwoman really. So, it felt opposite of it. It felt like I’m really just doing a completely different character, which I was. I tried to make sure, even as Batwoman is very controlled, she thinks through everything, which makes sense. But Red Death was completely the opposite. I think that she thought through things, but it was still this unhinged aspect that I had as Red Death. So it was really fun to play that. Then of course, it was an honor to be able to suit back up as Batwoman and kick a little butt, then leave in an epic way, or as epic as we could. So it was great to get a chance to say goodbye.

Having caused ripples with filmmakers and nervous feelings for already-threatened theater chains during the pandemic by putting a swathe of movies either directly on streaming service HBO Max or releasing them day-and-date online, Warner Bros. was somewhat naturally ready to go all-in on the big s screen as part of its presentation to cinemas bosses.

Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav opened with his commitment to theatrical, adding that the studio has 14 movies planned for cinemas in 2023, looking to ramp up to 20 in the coming years.

“I’m convinced, there is no other place to see a motion picture, to have impacts on all parts of the world…we believe in full windowing of the business, we don’t believe in streaming. We’re in no rush to bring movies to Max,” he said, referring to the to-be-retitled streaming service.

Zaslav has a longstanding business relationship with Oprah Winfrey (he oversaw development on her OWN network) and helped to introduce a project she’s deeply involved with –– the new musical version of Steven Spielberg’s ‘The Color Purple’.

Winfrey took the stage with the movie’s director Blitz Bazawule and told the room it was her first time at CinemaCon. “This is first circle moment for me to be a part of this film,” said Winfrey who starred in that original adaptation of the Alice Walker novel.

Winfrey said that the new musical version brings “magical realism, wholesome family goodness” to the screen. She happily introduced Bazawule,

“We knew you were the director to bring this version to the screen. How did you know you were the one?”

Bazawule: “I started this journey with the utmost respect for you, but also for Alice Walker, whose book gave us this amazing story…. At its core it’s about finding your voice, your family and breaking through obstacles which keep you down.”

“We’re going to get the groups in the seats,” said Winfrey, “It’s a celebration of sisterhood.”

They showed off the filled with lush Southern backgrounds, beaches, grand period costumes. We see Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery saying, “I was married to a man I didn’t know”. There’s a shot of a 1920s band set on stage, and Henson adds “We got to show these folks we belong.” The movie stars Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Jon Batiste, Halle Bailey and more.

‘The Color Purple’ will be in theaters on December 25th.

‘The Color Purple’ might indicate prestige, but pink was really the color for both the opening of the presentation –– launched by distribution chiefs Jeff Goldstein and Andrew Cripps who were decked out in hot pink suits with ties and sneakers to match –– and of ‘Barbie’, which has been making waves following its trailer and poster launch.

Co-writer/director Greta Gerwig took the stage with stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera to promote the movie, with Gerwig laughing as she told partner/co-writer Noah Baumbach to “move aside” when he suggested he might direct.

But the star of the presentation was Gosling –– clad in a pink jacket –– who revealed how the filmmakers helped him find the character of Ken.

    Here’s what he said,

“I have to be honest, I had up until this point, I only knew Ken from afar. I didn’t know Ken from within,” the actor explained. “If I’m being really honest, I doubted my Ken-ergy. I didn’t see it. Margot and Greta, I feel like they conjured this out of me somewhere.”

The foursome debuted some unseen footage, which helped flesh out the story of the movie as seen in the recent trailer. Robbie’s title character is seemingly going about her technicolor life until strange things start happening, like cold showers and burnt waffles and then the ultimate ailment — flat feet. Her fellow Barbies suggest she go and see “weird Barbie,” played by Kate McKinnon who offers two options, to go back to her regular Barbie life or real-life as displayed by a stiletto or a Birkenstock.

Barbie then sets off on a journey to the real world and is surprised by Ken who joins her in the backseat of her convertible.

From the looks of the trailer for the giant shark sequel, the filmmakers (including director Ben Wheatley) are doubling down on the monster action, bringing lots more creatures plus a new, bigger Megalodon shark.

Jason Statham returns as the heroic Jonas, seen in the footage leaping into the air on a jet ski to face off against a shark with a sword. Are we getting into ‘Sharknado’ territory? Possibly, but that’s part of the fun.

The footage showed some big moments, such as Paul riding one of the native Sandworm creatures, plus new cast members such as Florence Pugh and Austin Butler, who will be Princess Irulan and the calculating sword-slinger Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen. Who hopefully doesn’t sound like Elvis Presley.

    ‘The Nun 2’

There was horror to be found with the sequel to ‘Conjuring’ spin-off ‘The Nun’, with a first look at the new movie, directed by Michael Chaves.

As expected, it’s scary stuff, with young girls playing a dare game that soon turns terrifying. Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene is back to help deal with the new demonic threat. Expect freakish goat creatures, rivers of blood and lots of screaming.

Farmiga and co-star Storm Reid took the stage to talk up the film with the former explaining that Sister Irene returns because “she has a strong sense of duty”. Filming at a real abandoned church in France frightened Farmiga so much that she needed an escort to walk her around the location.

‘The Nun’ will vow to frighten audiences on September 8th.

James Wan’s ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ kicked off a half hour chunk of the presentation dedicated to DC movies.

Though James Gunn is away touring the world for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’ he sent a video message. Fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran was in person to talk up the slate.

    Here’s what he said,

“Each of these films not only delivers a stunning cinematic experience that uniquely highlights our iconic DC heroes, but they also blaze a trail forward into our DC universe that we are cracking with our next chapter.”

Neither James Wan nor star Jason Momoa were on hand, though they appeared via video to introduce a new trailer for the aquatic hero’s sequel.

Wan said ‘Aquaman 2’ visits “beautiful, strange new worlds” where it explores “interesting new characters.” “It’s an action-adventure story with a really fun bromance between Arthur (Momoa) and Orm (Patrick Wilson). Orm was a villain the first time around, but this time Arthur needs him.”

As for the trailer, it finds Momoa battling Yahya Abdul Mateen II’s Black Manta –– who this time has his own Trident, and is causing big trouble for our hero, requiring the Orm assist. Oh, and Aquaman has a child now.

A new trailer for ‘The Flash’ was shown, adding in more to the story of Barry Allen’s troubles with the multiverse.

Directed by Andy Muschietti, the superhero film finds Barry (Ezra Miller) causing problems when he uses his powers to save his parents – and breaks the universe in the process. As the trailer shows, he’ll need the help of Michael Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl to stop a multiverse variant of ‘Man of Steel’s General Zod (Michael Shannon), who has free rein in a world where heroes don’t appear to exist.

Now, talking to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s revealed one place he definitely won’t be calling the shots: DC Studios.

What did Ben Affleck say about directing at DC Studios?

Asked whether he’d be up for directing a DC movie, Affleck had this to say,

“I would not direct something for the [James] Gunn DC. Absolutely not. I have nothing against James Gunn. Nice guy, sure he’s going to do a great job. I just wouldn’t want to go in and direct in the way they’re doing that. I’m not interested in that.”

This is likely news –– at least in public –– to James Gunn, who took to Twitter in December replying to a fan question about Affleck by saying this:

“Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.”

You can read more about what Gunn said here:

Affleck also did not hold back from talking about how unhappy he was while making the theatrical version of ‘Justice League’.

    Here’s what he said,

“That was the worst experience I’ve ever seen in a business which is full of some shitty experiences. It broke my heart. There was an idea of someone [Joss Whedon] coming in, like, “I’ll rescue you and we’ll do 60 days of shooting and I’ll write a whole thing around what you have. I’ve got the secret.” And it wasn’t the secret. That was hard. And I started to drink too much. I was back at the hotel in London, it was either that or jump out the window. And I just thought, ‘This isn’t the life I want. My kids aren’t here. I’m miserable.’ You want to go to work and find something interesting to hang onto, rather than just wearing a rubber suit, and most of it you’re just standing against the computer screen going, ‘If this nuclear waste gets loose, we’ll …’ That’s fine. I don’t condescend to that or put it down, but I got to a point where I found it creatively not satisfying. Also just, you’re sweaty and exhausted. And I thought, “I don’t want to participate in this in any way. And I don’t want to squander any more of my life, of which I have a limited amount.”

Despite that, he still squeezed back into the “rubber suit” for ‘The Flash’, where he reprises the role of Batman. And he feels like he finally got a handle on the role.

Affleck said this of coming back to the role,

“I did finally figure out how to play that character, and I nailed it in ‘The Flash’. For the five minutes I’m there, it’s really great. A lot of it’s just tone. You’ve got to figure out, what’s your version of the person? Who is the guy that fits what you can do? I tried to fit myself into a Batman.’

‘Air’, in which he also plays as Nike co-founder and former CEO Phil Knight, will be in theaters on April 5th before it then heads to Prime Video.

  • James Gunn Outlines Initial DCU Plan

James Gunn and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran have been teasing for a while what we can expect from the movies, shows and video games that will form part of their planned 8-10 year reboot of the DC onscreen universe. Gunn took to twitter today to make the initial announcement, one which includes new versions of Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and more.

Gunn confirmed that the existing DC movies still to be released––‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ ‘The Flash’, ‘Blue Beetle’ and ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’––are all still on track for release, with the Flash outing and its universe-rebooting nature key to helping to usher in the new shows and movies.

Those films will then lead into what Gunn and Safran are calling ‘Gods and Monsters’, which is a major part (but not all) of the first “Chapter” in their plans. “The one thing that we can promise is that everything from our first project forward will be canon and will be connected,” says Gunn. “We’re using some actors from the past, we’re not using other actors from the past, but everything from that moment forward will be connected and consistent.” It’ll be a mix of TV (both animated and live action) and movies, with games tying in as needed.

“DC has had great individual movies over the years, but we think that what the audience really appreciates and needs is a connected universe,” adds Safran. “It minimizes audience confusion and it maximizes their connectivity to it across all the platforms.”

Gunn talked up 10 initial titles. For TV, first up will be the animated ‘Creature Commandos’, which looks to include the likes of Weasel (as seen in Gunn’s move ‘The Suicide Squad’). Gunn has written the first batch of episodes and the plan is for characters to cross between animated and live-action, and for the same actor to both voice and play the role where possible.

There was also confirmation of ‘Peacemaker’ spin-off series ‘Waller’, with Viola Davis reprising her role as the tough wrangler of Task Force X, interacting with some characters from ‘Peacemaker’ (and one from ‘Creature Commandos’). That show will be overseen by Christal Henry, who was a writer on the TV’s ‘Watchmen,’ and Jeremy Carver who created ‘Doom Patrol’. The series will sit between the first and second seasons of ‘Peacemaker’.

Those are what Gunn is calling an amuse bouche for the main DCU launch, which will officially start via one of DC’s heavy hitters: Superman. ‘Superman: Legacy’. As he’s previously said, Gunn is writing the new take on the hero, and there is the hope he’ll also direct (though that hasn’t been confirmed yet). And it has a locked in release date of July 11th, 2025. “With our stories, we want to take it away from good guy vs. bad guy,” Gunn says. “There are really good—almost saintly—people and Superman is among them. There are really terrible villains like Gorilla Grodd or the Joker. And then there’s everybody in between them, so there are all these shades of gray which allow us to tell complex stories.”

That will be followed by ‘Lanterns’, which is the latest iteration of the series that has been in development at HBO Max for a while now. It’ll be an Earth-set series featuring Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart (with others popping up) and is described as ‘True Detective’ with a “terrifying mystery” that ties into the wider universe.

On the movie front again, ‘The Authority’ will utilize characters from the WildStorm Comics Imprint that DC bought. Says Gunn, “It’s a very different kind of superhero story. They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them.”

Wonder Woman fans are getting ‘Paradise Lost,’ a show set on Themyscira, the birthplace of Princess Diana, and described as ‘Game Of Thrones’ with the Amazons. “It’s an origin story of how this society of women came about. What does it mean? What are their politics like? What are their rules? Who’s in charge? What are the games that they play with each other to get to the top?,” Gunn enthuses. “I think it’s really exciting.” It’s set before Diana is born.

Batman will be all new in the main DCU via movie ‘The Brave And The Bold’, adapting Grant Morrison‘s run, and featuring yet another Bruce Wayne who tries to keep his son, Damien Wayne, in line as Robin. This will launch the “Bat-family” into the movie universe.

‘Booster Gold’ is touted as an HBO series. “I think of it as basically the story of a superhero’s imposter syndrome,” says Gunn. “How do you deal with that? It follows how he tries to use this future technology to be loved by the people of today and what is really at the base of that. It’s a character story that’s going to be a very different type of show, and we’re talking to an actor about it now.”

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will be a big-scale sci-fi film based on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s comic run. It features a “darker, harsher” version of Kara Zor-El raised on a surviving chunk of Krypton who sees everyone around her die.

Finally, a new ‘Swamp Thing’ movie will be a horror-inflected origin story for the creature, one that still intersects with the rest of the DCU.

What, then, does all this mean for the likes of Matt Reeves’ ‘Batman‘ or Todd Phillips’ ‘Joker’ sequel? They will fall under the umbrella title ‘Elseworlds’. “The bar for an Elseworlds tale is going to be higher than the bar for a movie within the DCU,” says Gunn. “Not that we’re not always going to have a high bar, but it’s got to be something really special for us to tell that story outside of our regular continuity and to spend the money to make it.”

“We are actually developing a few other things as well, but for one reason or another, we can’t say them,” Gunn concludes. This is the first batch of stuff, but there may be a couple of surprises to come.”

It’s certainly an ambitious plan. Now we wait and see whether it truly comes to fruition––as previous DC regimes have made bold statements, but haven’t always lasted to see their ideas realized…

  • Stephen Amell to Play Oliver Queen Again on ‘The Flash’

‘Arrow’ Star Stephen Amell Will Return as Oliver Queen in the Final Season of ‘The Flash.’
‘Arrow’ Star Stephen Amell Will Return as Oliver Queen in the Final Season of ‘The Flash.’

Heads up, ‘Arrow’ fans! Stephen Amell, who played vigilante archer Oliver Queen (aka the Green Arrow) throughout the CW TV show’s run, will pick up his quiver and bow once more, as he returns to the role that made him famous in an episode of the ninth and final season of ‘The Flash.’

His return serves as a thank-you to fans of both shows, since Grant Gustin’s Flash was first introduced in a guest spot on ‘Arrow,’ which served as the foundation for the CW’s Arrowverse.

Amell has made guest appearances in eight previous episodes of ‘The Flash’ – before retiring as Oliver Queen after eight seasons of ‘Arrow’ in 2020 – with Gustin frequently returning the favor by appearing in ‘Arrow.’ Their character’s annual team-ups were highly anticipated and celebrated by fans of both shows.

Since leaving ‘Arrow,’ Amell has starred in the Starz professional wrestling drama ‘Heels,’ which was renewed for a second season in November 2021.

According to Deadline, Amell will guest star “in episode 909 (of ‘The Flash’), joining previously announced David Ramsey (John Diggle aka Spartan), Keiynan Lonsdale (Wally West/Kid Flash) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (Ramsey Rosso/Bloodwork).”

“‘As soon as our final season was announced, we knew we wanted Stephen to come back and reprise his iconic role as Oliver Queen,’ said executive producer Eric Wallace. ‘After all, it was Oliver who originally launched Barry Allen (played by Grant Gustin) on his heroic path. That’s why everyone on Team Flash felt so strongly that it was important to create a full-circle moment with Oliver’s return in the final season of ‘The Flash.’ The result is an epic-yet-emotional episode we hope Arrowverse fans will enjoy. It’s all to say “thank you” to everyone for watching and supporting our show throughout nine wonderful years. We absolutely cannot wait for everyone to see Grant and Stephen saving the world together again. And yes, there will be thrills, chills and tears.’”

David Ramsey’s return as John Diggle is also cause for celebration, since the actor also starred in ‘Arrow’ since the show’s first episode, proving the perfect partner for Amell’s character.

Ramsey’s since gone on to direct episodes of ‘Arrow’ as well as its spin-off shows ‘Legends of Tomorrow,’ ‘Supergirl,’ ‘Batwoman,’ and ‘Superman & Lois.’ His return to the role of John Diggle will be helmed by another Arrowverse actor-turned-director, Danielle Panabaker – who’s starred in all nine seasons of ‘The Flash’ as Caitlin Snow (aka Killer Frost), after debuting in the role in an episode of ‘Arrow.’ Panabaker has since directed three episodes of ‘The Flash.’

‘The Flash’ season 9 will debut on February 8, 2023.
