  • New Coke Is Coming Back and You Can Thank ‘Stranger Things’

New Coke Is Coming Back and You Can Thank ‘Stranger Things’

    Netflix

Because everything old is new again, New Coke is coming back.

And you can thank “Stranger Things” Season 3 for it.

In 1985, Coca-Cola introduced a new version of its popular soft drink. People were mad. They were very mad. “New Coke” was spit out, crushed up, vilified as worse than garbage water, and then made into a punchline and cautionary tale.

Well, 1985 is also the year that Season 3 of “Stranger Things” is set. The new season, which premieres July 4 on Netflix, will feature New Coke in several episodes.

Coca-Cola is taking advantage of the tie-in by selling a limited supply of New Coke starting May 23 at cokestore.com.

“Stranger Things” is no stranger to these kinds of product references; Eggos had the spotlight in Season 1.

And for Season 3, New Coke isn’t the only product tie-in for the new season. H&M will sell a line of ’80s-style clothing, swimsuits, and flip-flops, with star Dacre Montgomery (Billy Hargrove) featured in the ad campaign. Baskin-Robbins will feature new flavors referencing the show’s Scoops Ahoy ice cream parlor.

But New Coke “was one of the first ideas in our Season 3 brainstorm,” show creators the Duffer Brothers wrote in an email to the New York Times. “It was the summer of ’85, and when you talk about pop culture moments, New Coke was a really big deal. It would have been more bizarre to not include it.”

The Duffer brothers even directed a remake of the original New Coke commercial, which will be show in movie theaters starting this weekend:

  • First ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Clip Kicks off a Hot Summer

First ‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Clip Kicks off a Hot Summer

Stranger Things Season 3 clip still
    Netflix/YouTube

Summer has arrived early, thanks to a new clip and posters from “Stranger Things” Season 3.

Netflix unveiled the season’s first clip on Monday, and it gives a taste of the latest in Hawkins, Indiana. When the show premieres this July, it looks like we’ll be right into the summer heat. The clip features the busy Hawkins community pool, where a group of women are taking in the sun … and the sight of one of the lifeguards.

The group of ladies has their eye on Billy Hargrove (Dacre Montgomery), the volatile older stepbrother of Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink). Meanwhile, he might just have his eye on someone, too. As we saw in Season 2, there seems to be a mutual appreciation between him and Mrs. Wheeler (Cara Buono). Watch below.

The clip doesn’t show the kids at the center of the series, Jane Hopper/Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin), Max Mayfield (Sink), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), or Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo). Fear not, though — they’ll all be back as the adventures continue. Netflix also released new character posters on Monday, and they show the gang as well as other major players:

The “Stranger Things” plagiarism lawsuit isn’t headed to trial after all.

The trial was set to begin May 7 in Los Angeles, but on Sunday, the suit’s plaintiff, Charles Kessler, withdrew his claim, per Deadline. He cited documents from 2010 and 2013 that proved the show’s creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, had independently conceived of the story. Kessler had previously accused them of basing “Stranger Things” on ideas that he said he pitched them during an encounter at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.

“After hearing the deposition testimony this week of the legal expert I hired, it is now apparent to me that, whatever I may have believed in the past, my work had nothing to do with the creation of Stranger Things,” Kessler said in part in his statement Sunday.

Netflix had been clear about its support for the Duffers since the lawsuit was filed and, unsurprisingly, continued to be once the claim was withdrawn. The streamer released a statement reiterating that “‘Stranger Things’ is a ground-breaking original creation by The Duffer Brothers” and that it is “proud of this show and of our friends Matt and Ross.”

The news clears up the controversy surrounding the show as it heads into its third season. The latest installment in the Duffer brothers’ series is due to premiere on July 4.

  • ‘Rim of the World’ Trailer: ‘Stranger Things’ Meets ‘Independence Day’ in New Netflix Film

‘Rim of the World’ Trailer: ‘Stranger Things’ Meets ‘Independence Day’ in New Netflix Film

    Aaron Epstein/Netflix

Netflix subscribers who can’t wait for the upcoming third season of “Stranger Things” can tide themselves over with “Rim of the World,” a new film featuring a ragtag group of kids who team up to fight off some scary creatures.

It’s clear that the movie is inspired at least in part by the Duffer Brothers series (heck, the main foursome even ride bikes together), with the young protagonists bonding over a sudden alien invasion that interrupts their summer adventure camp experience. Pop culture references abound, including nods to “Star Wars,” “Jurassic Park,” and “Independence Day,” the latter of which gets an especially hysterical shout-out in the flick’s trailer.

Processing an alien invasion is hard enough for Alex (Jack Gore), ZhenZhen (Miya Cech), Dariush (Benjamin Flores Jr.), and Gabriel (Alessio Scalzotto), who find themselves alone at their campground. But then, they’re entrusted with a special key that may hold the answer to stopping the attack and saving the world — as long as they can survive without any adults or electronics.

The trailer looks super fun, and with McG (“Charlie’s Angels“) at the helm, we have faith that “Rim of the World” will set itself apart from its predecessors. The film hits Netflix on May 24.

The Marvel universe is getting turned Upside Down.

“Stranger Things” star David Harbour is joining the cast of “Black Widow,” the standalone movie starring Scarlett Johansson as the Avengers heroine, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Harbour’s casting comes just a few weeks after Florence Pugh hopped on board the movie. Details of who either will be playing have not been revealed.

Not much is known about the plot, other than that it will be a globe-trotting story featuring Natasha Romanoff, the spy who was trained by the KGB before becoming an agent of SHIELD and an Avenger.

Harbour, a veteran actor who gained leading man status on Netflix’s supernatural drama series “Stranger Things,”  is headlining his first film, a reboot of “Hellboy,” opening April 12. “Stranger Things” Season 3 premieres in July.

    Netflix

Sadie Sink is moving from the Upside Down to “Fear Street.”

The young “Stranger Things” actress has been tapped to star in the second installment of the “Fear Street” trilogy, based on the R.L. Stein novels. Leigh Janiak is directing all three movies.

Sink joined “Stranger Things” in Season 2 as newcomer Max Mayfield.

The “Fear Street” trilogy has previously announced cast members Kiana Madeira, Olivia Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Ashley Zukerman, Fred Hechinger, Julia Rehwald, and Jeremy Ford.

The book series, released in 1989, was set in the town of Shadyside and revolved around teenagers who faced malevolent and sometimes paranormal opponents. The books have sold over 80 million copies.

The first movie is set in 1994 in the aftermath of a brutal tragedy. A group of teens discover a series of horrifying events that have plagued Shadyside for many years.

The second installment, set in 1978, centers on Camp Nightwing, divided between wealthy Sunnyvale campers and staffers from Shadyside. But when horrors from both towns’ shared history come alive, they must band together — or face a terrible fate.

The third film takes place in 1666, when a colonial village is gripped by a hysterical witch hunt that has deadly consequences for centuries to come. The teens in 1994 try and finally put an end to their town’s curse, before it’s too late.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 3 Trailer & Photos Tease an All-New Terror in the Upside Down

    Netflix

Summer is here on “Stranger Things” Season 3 and it’s brought the teenage wasteland known as a new mall.

School is out in the first trailer for Netflix’s supernatural drama. It’s 1985, several months after the events of Season 2. Tweens Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Max (Sadie Sink) and Will (Noah Schnapp) are playing pranks, enjoying the sunny outdoors, and visiting the new Starcourt mall.

But as is usually the case in Hawkins, Indiana, sinister threats lurk underneath the surface. And as the trailer briefly teases, a new, terrifying monster emerges from the Upside Down.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEG3bmU_WaI&feature=youtu.be

There’s a lot to unpack in the trailer and the new photos (below) released by Netflix: Steve (Joe Keery) is working at the mall’s ice cream shop and his bromance with Dustin continues; Billy (Dacre Montgomery) is still flirting with the ladies as a lifeguard at the pool; and Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) appear to have jobs at the Hawkins newspaper.

Meanwhile, Chief Hopper (David Harbour) is looking spiffy in printed shirts and possibly going on a date (!), is it with Joyce (Winona Ryder)?

We also get glimpses of new cast members Cary Elwes as the mayor, Jake Busey as a local reporter, and Maya Hawke as Steve’s co-worker.

“Stranger Things” Season 3 premieres July 4 on Netflix.

  • ‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

‘Stranger Things’ Star Finn Wolfhard In Talks for ‘Ghostbusters’ Movie

    Netflix

Remember when the “Stranger Things “kids dressed up like “Ghostbusters” in a Halloween episode?

Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike on the ’80s-set sci-fi show, is in talks to star in the upcoming “Ghostbusters” movie directed by Jason Reitman.

The studio would not comment on plot details, but sources told Variety that the story will focus on a single mom and her family, with Carrie Coon (“The Leftovers,” “The Sinner”) playing Wolfhard’s mom. Whether they become Ghostbusters themselves remains to be seen.

Since the sequel to is being billed as a continuation of the first two ’80s films (and not the femme-centric Paul Feig film), a woman Ghostbuster seems unlikely.

Supposedly, Reitman was reluctant to use anyone from the “Stranger Things” cast (given they’ve already done “Ghostbusters,”) but both he and the executives were “blown away” by Wolfhard’s audition.

Wolfhard recently wrapped Season 3 of “Stranger Things,” which will debut on Netflix in July. He’ll also be in “It: Chapter 2” this fall, as well as “The Goldfinch” and “The Turning.”

    USA Network

Coon played the leader of a cult who was also the overprotective mother of a boy accused of a double murder in the second season of “The Sinner.”

Her movie credits include “Gone Girl,” “Widows” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”
