Viola Davis Joins the cast of ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,’ which is scheduled for release in theaters on November 17th, 2023.

While Viola Davis is more usually seen as a heroic or good-hearted character, we have seen her channel a darker side in the past: ‘Suicide Squad’s Amanda Waller, for example. Or the crafty Annalise Keating on TV’s ‘How to Get Away with Murder’.

It’s that side of her performance that will be on display in the ‘Hunger Games’ prequel movie ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’. Davis has joined the in-production movie as Dr. Volumnia Gaul.

‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ is set years before the story of Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen. In this throwback to an earlier era of the Hunger Games, the new narrative follows 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) long before he’s the cunning president of post-apocalyptic nation Panem.

Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.

But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and a snake.”

Dr. Gaul will serve as the main antagonist for the movie, a games-maker who designs the 10th annual games.

Francis Lawrence is directing the movie now from a script by Michael Lesslie. The ever-expanding cast also includes Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ashley Liao, Sofia Sanchez, Mackenzie Lansing, Zoe Renee, George Somner, Isobel Jesper Jones, Lilly Maria Cooper, Max Raphael, Dakota Shapiro, Vaughan Reilly, Nick Benson, Knox Gibson, Amélie Hoeferle and Cooper Dillon.

“The ‘Hunger Games’ films have always been elevated by their exceptional casting, and we are thrilled to be continuing that tradition with Viola Davis as Volumnia Gaul,” says Lionsgate motion picture group president Nathan Kahane. “Her formidable and powerful presence will add layers of complexity and menace to this story.”

“From the beginning, Viola has been our dream for Dr. Gaul because of the finely layered intelligence and emotion she brings to every role,” comments franchise producer Nina Jacobson. “A brilliant and eccentric strategist, Gaul is instrumental in shaping a young Coriolanus Snow into the man he will become. We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor with Viola’s extraordinary range and presence to play this pivotal role.”

“Dr. Gaul is as cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable. Snow’s savvy as a political operator develops in no small part due to his experiences with her as the games’ most commanding figure,” enthuses Lawrence.

Shooting is underway on the prequel movie set in ‘The Hunger Games’ universe, ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’, but that isn’t stopping fresh casting news from being confirmed.

Peter Dinklage, the veteran of such huge genre projects as ‘Game of Thrones’, the ‘X-Men’ movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest recruit for the movie. He’ll play Dean Casca Highbottom, who runs the training academy in Panem and is one of the architects of the games.

The story, based on Collins’ prequel novel, is set roughly 60 years before the events in the original book trilogy. It finds 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) as the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol.

Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a snake.

Francis Lawrence, who directed three of the ‘Hunger Games’ movies based on Suzanne Collins’ bestselling book series (‘Catching Fire’, ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’ and Mockingjay – Part 2’) is back behind the camera for this new one, which has seen script work from Collins, Michael Arndt and, more recently, Michael Lesslie.

    Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence in 2012’s ‘The Hunger Games.’

“Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow’s life. As the austere and vindictive face of the games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus’s fate. I’m thrilled that Peter will be bringing him to life,” says Lawrence in a statement.

“With production underway, we couldn’t be more excited about the way this cast has come together and thrilled to be welcoming Peter Dinklage to Panem. Peter is not just a fan favorite actor who brings a commanding presence to every part he plays,” adds Nathan Kahane, President of Lionsgate’s Motion Picture Group. “He is one of the best actors alive. He will bring a formidable, charismatic authority to the important role of the dean of the Academy.”

Dinklage is just the latest piece of casting for this movie. Others have included Hunter Schafer, who plays Tigris Snow, while Jason Schwartzman is Lucretius “Lucky” Flickerman, the host of the 10th games and ancestor to Caesar Flickerman (Stanley Tucci in the original movies).

And there has been a wave of mentors and tributes brought aboard including Irene Boehm, Cooper Dillon, Luna Kuse, Kjell Brutscheidt, Dimitri Abold, Athena Strates, Dakota Shapiro, George Somner, Jerome Lance, Ashley Liao, Knox Gibson, Mackenzie Lansing, Aamer Husain, Vaughan Reilly, Nick Benson, Laurel Marsden, Lilly Cooper, Luna Steeples, Hiroki Berrecloth,
Max Raphael, Zoe Renee, Ayomide Adegun, Kaitlyn Akinpelumi, Sofia Sanchez and Amélie Hoeferle.

‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ will be in theaters on November 17th next year.

  • 2022 SAG Awards Nominations Announced

(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in 'House of Gucci'
(L to R) Jared Leto, Florence Andrews, Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, and Al Pacino in ‘House of Gucci’

The 2022 SAG Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens via Instagram Live and there were many surprises.

In the film categories, Oscar frontrunner ‘Power of the Dog’ tied ‘House of Gucci’ for the most nominations with three each, however it was surprisingly left off the list for Best Cast, which is basically SAG’s Best Picture category. On the other hand, ‘Gucci,’ which had essentially left the Oscar race till now with only Lady Gaga still in the hunt for Best Actress, has seen a resurrection of sorts with it’s Best Cast nomination and now has a better shot at multiple nominations at the Academy Awards. Rounding out the Best Cast category are ‘Don’t Look Up,’ ‘Belfast,’ ‘CODA’ and ‘King Richard.’

Other surprises in the film categories include Oscar frontrunner for Best Actress, Kristen Stewart being left off of the list for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her work in ‘Spencer.’ As well as actor Peter Dinklage, who will likely be nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his role in ‘Cyrano,’ but was unfortunately snubbed by his fellow actors.

There were also some unexpected nominations, as Javier Bardem scored an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his work in ‘Being the Ricardos,’ and Jennifer Hudson was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her role in ‘Respect.’

In the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category, both Ben Affleck and Bradley Cooper managed to receive nominations for their work in ‘The Tender Bar’ and ‘Licorice Pizza,’ respectively, putting both actors squarely in the Oscar race. Likewise, Ruth Negga’s Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role nomination for her work in ‘Passing,’ also makes her an Oscar contender.

On the television side, nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series include ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ ‘The Morning Show,’ ‘Squid Game,’ ‘Succession,’ and ‘Yellowstone.’ Nominees for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series are ‘The Great,’ ‘Hacks,’ ‘The Kominsky Method,’ ‘Only Murders in the Building,’ and ‘Ted Lasso.’

As previously announced, receiving the Life Achievement Award at the 28th annual ceremony will be Oscar winning actress, Helen Mirren. Last year’s ceremony was held virtual due to the pandemic, but this year it will be live again from Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, airing on TNT and TBS at 5pm PST on Sunday, February 27th.

  • Movie Review: ‘Cyrano’

(L to R) Haley Bennett and Peter Dinklage in 'Cyrano'

    ‘Cyrano’

After a one-week run in Los Angeles beginning December 17th, the new musical comedy ‘Cyrano,’ which is based on the 2018 stage musical of the same name, will open in wide release on January 28th. Directed by Joe Wright (‘Darkest Hour’), the musical is loosely based on the 1897 play ‘Cyrano de Bergerac,’ and stars Peter Dinklage (‘Avengers: Infinity War’) in the title role as a man unable of telling his true love how he really feels and instead helps another man win her love. In addition to Dinklage, the film also stars Haley Bennett (‘The Magnificent Seven’), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (‘Ender’s Game’), and Ben Mendelsohn (‘Captain Marvel’). The result is a really fun, entertaining and romantic musical comedy with unforgettable songs and a powerful performance from Peter Dinklage.

    vAP3VI3UHVTqQUGzCFGHZ3

Just like the original play, the film is set in 1640 Paris and begins with the introduction of the beautiful Roxane (Bennet), who attends a play with De Guiche (Mendelsohn), an officer in the French Army. The play is quickly interrupted by Cyrano de Bergerac (Dinklage), a cadet who is hopelessly in love with Roxane and trying to impress her. However, Roxane soon meets another cadet named Christian (Harrison Jr.) and falls instantly in love. She asks her Cyrano to introduce her to Christian and he reluctantly agrees. Christian has feelings for Roxanne too, but is too shy to talk to her. Eventually, Christian asks Cyrano for help winning Roxane’s love by writing romantic letters to her on his behalf. Fearing that Roxane could never love him because of his diminutive size, which has made him an outcast, Cyrano reluctantly agrees even though it breaks his heart. Meanwhile, De Guiche also has his eye on Roxane as well and threatens her new romance when he sends the cadets to the frontlines of the war. Roxane asks Cyrano to watch over Christian, but when he discovers Cyrano’s true feelings for her, it will threaten both of their lives.

Full disclosure, I had no idea this film was a musical when I saw it, I only knew that it was based on the classic literary character. I was pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful, fun and entertaining film this turned out to be. Joe Wright, who is best known for his movies like ‘Atonement’ and ‘The Darkest Hour,’ creates a large and colorful world with beautiful camera movements and an impressive production design. What really stuck with me is how unforgettable the music in the film is, which was composed by members of The National, Aaron and Bryce Dessner. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least one of the songs from the film is nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song this year. One of the best numbers in the film comes toward the middle of the third act and features Cyrano, Christian and their fellow soldiers signing as they prepare for war. The music is haunting and the way the sequence is cut together really highlights the significance of the moment. Also, keep an eye in this scene for ‘Once’ star Glen Hansard who plays one of the soldiers. The film’s opening number, “Someone to Say,” is also a show-stopper and a fun start to the movie.

One of the clever concepts of the film, and the musical that it is based on, is that Cyrano is not an outcast because he has a large nose, but rather because of his size. This works exceedingly well, obviously because of the actor playing the role, but also because the old concept for making Cyrano an outcast seems so silly now. But Peter Dinklage plays the role beautifully giving his character other reasons for the way he is treated besides his size, such as his attitude and crass demeanor. But Cyrano is also kind of a badass in this version, with Dinklage’s character being a master fighter and marksman, and someone others would not want to cross. He also plays the character like he’s the smartest person in the room, which he usually is, and adds to his elitist attitude. The actor gives an absolutely brilliant performance and is definitely a frontrunner for an Academy Award nomination. I was also impressed with his singing ability, as the actor can carry quite a tune and is really terrific in all the musical numbers.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Ben Mendelsohn who has very strong acting scenes but struggles with his one musical number. The character is really the heavy in the film, a role the actor portrays well, so he really didn’t really need to have a song at all. That being said, no one plays a villain better than Mendelsohn and he is clearly having fun in his menacing role. In any retelling of this story, Christian is kind of a thankless role and Kelvin Harrison Jr. imbues the character with an innocence and naivety that makes him both vulnerable and relatable to the audience. Who hasn’t felt insecure around someone they are attracted to? As the attention of everyone’s affection, actress Haley Bennet is very sweet and charming, as well as a bit devious in the role. She is believable as a woman desired by several different suiters, but also totally believable as a woman who wants to choose her own destiny and find independence of her own. The actress is a very impressive singer and has great chemistry with Dinklage and Harrison.

Obviously, the Cyrano de Bergerac story has been adapted to film several times before, probably most memorably in Steve Martin’s 1987 comedy classic ‘Roxanne.’ While that was a modern-day adaption, oddly, ‘Cyrano’ seems like a more relatable film in 2021, even though it is set in 1640. The important issues the film tackles, the performances and the music give the movie a relatable feeling for today’s audience. The screenplay by Erica Schmidt is smart and funny and translates the material superbly. The film itself is gorgeous to watch, thanks to Seamus McGarvey’s sweeping cinematography. In the end, director Joe Wright delivered a fantastic rom-com musical based on the most unlikely source material, with wonderful songs and a career-highlight performance form Peter Dinklage.

‘Cyrano’ receives 4 out of 5 stars.

  • 9 Great Peter Dinklage Performances That Aren’t From ‘Game of Thrones’

9 Great Peter Dinklage Performances That Aren’t From ‘Game of Thrones’

    Miramax Films

Peter Dinklage rightly collected three Emmys (and countless other awards) for his role as wise, wine-drinking Tyrion Lannister on “Game of Thrones.”

If you didn’t realize he’s been acting since the ’90s, here are some of his other performances you might have missed or forgotten about. Or are just damn fun to revisit as the actor turns 50 on June 11.

    9. “Living in Oblivion” (1995)

    Sony Pictures Classics

In this offbeat indie movie about making an indie movie, Dinklage is an actor hired for a”Twin Peaks”-style dream sequence. He goes off on a rant to the director (Steve Buscemi) demanding to know, “Have you ever had a dream with a dwarf in it? Do you know anyone who’s had a dream with a dwarf in it? I don’t even have dreams with dwarves in them!” Watch the scene here.

    8. “Elf” (2003)

    New Line Cinema

Dinklage spent years fighting against being typecast as a Santa’s helper, so for him to be in a movie called “Elf,” and not play an elf, well, that’s huge. When  Buddy (Will Ferrell), blunders into his dad’s meeting and proclaims, “I didn’t know you had elves working here!,” cue one “Angry Elf” going ballistic on a completely clueless Buddy.

    7. “Knights of Badassdom” (2014)

    Entertainment One

It’s great fun to see Dinklage cut loose as “Sir Hung the Capable,” a LARPer whose lines include, “I’m packin’ an ounce of killer shrooms and there be monsters in need of pummelin’!” He’s part of a crew (Ryan Kwanten, Summer Glau, and Steve Zahn) who accidentally summon a real demon to their fake battle in this underrated horror comedy.

    6. “Death at a Funeral” (2007/2010)

    MGM

Dinklage is a guest whose presence at a somber funeral triggers a hilarious chain of events in this British comedy — and in the American remake (in which he plays the same part).

    5. “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri(2017)

    Fox Searchlight

Dinklage didn’t get an Oscar (or even a nomination), like costars Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell, but we loved his work here. The dinner scene where Frances’s character agrees, reluctantly, to go out with him, is gold: “I know I’m a dwarf who sells used cars and has a drinking problem, I know that. But who the hell are you, man? You’re that billboard lady who never ever smiles, who never has a good word to say about anybody … and I’m the one who’s not the catch?!”

    4. “Find Me Guilty” (2006)

    Freestyle Releasing

In the great Sidney Lumet‘s second-to-last film, Vin Diesel stars as colorful gangster Jackie DiNorscio, who constantly butts heads with the ridiculously bureaucratic legal system. Dinklage has some of the most riveting moments as an eloquent defense attorney.

    3. “I Think We’re Alone Now” (2018)

    Momentum Pictures

A recluse (Dinklage) thinks he’s the last man on earth and he’s fine with that in this indie film. And then along comes another survivor (Elle Fanning) and he’s not quite sure if that’s a good thing. The film doesn’t completely work, but Dinklage is, as always, terrific.

    2. “Rememory” (2017)

    Lionsgate Premiere

An intriguing premise about a machine that lets you access your memories like movies becomes a murder mystery, with Dinklage as the detective. The film got mixed reviews, but Dinklage is great as a man mourning his dead brother. And the way he finagles his way into a grieving widow’s home is pure Tyrion: He offers her a bottle of booze and a whopper of a story that her late husband saved his life.

    1. “The Station Agent” (2003)

    Miramax Films

Dinklage’s first lead role, as a man who inherits a train station and wants nothing to do with his new neighbors’ complicated lives, earned him 2 SAG nominations, an Independent Spirit Award nomination and several critics awards. Director Tom McCarthy (who’d go on to direct Best Picture Winner “Spotlight) rewrote the role just for Dinklage, a decision that ignited both of their careers.

The upcoming thriller “I Care a Lot” is poised to add a “Game of Thrones” vet.

Peter Dinklage is in talks to join the film, Variety reports. He’s expected to co-star with Rosamund Pike. The project is written by J Blakeson, who will also direct.

The film centers on Marla Grayson (Pike), a legal guardian who uses the law to her benefit, yet at the expense of her clients. She’ll apparently pick out a client she thinks is perfect, only to find that looks are deceiving. No details have been revealed about Dinklage’s character.

The actor is well-known for playing Tyrion Lannister in all eight seasons of “Game of Thrones.” His work on the show has earned him three Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. Dinklage is also a SAG Award winner for his role in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Other recent films that include the actor are “Avengers: Infinity War,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” and “Three Christs.”

“I Care a Lot” is slated to start production this month. It comes from Black Bear Pictures and Sugar November. Blakeson will produce alongside Teddy Schwarzman, Ben Stillman, and Michael Heimer. Sacha Guttenstein will serve as executive producer.

With “Game of Thrones” ending, Peter Dinklage is moving on from Westeros.

Dinklage, Michael Fassbender, and Jamie Foxx are in early talks to star in Mel Gibson’s remake of “The Wild Bunch,” according to Deadline.

Sam Peckinpah’s 1969 original told the story of an aging outlaw gang looking to pull off one final score. At the time, the film was controversial for its graphic depiction of violence, but was nominated for two Oscars, original screenplay and score.

Gibson co-wrote the screenplay with Bryan Bagby; it will be Gibson’s first directorial gig since 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” which won two Oscars and was nominated for Best Picture and Director.

As an actor, Gibson has several projects right now in the Cannes market, including “Rothchild” opposite Shia LaBeouf and the dark holiday comedy “Fatman.”

Fassbender can next be seen reprising his role as Magneto in “Dark Phoenix” this summer. Foxx will play George Jefferson in ABC’s live tribute to “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” next week. And Dinklage will play Tyrion Lannister once last time in the series finale of “Game of Thrones” on Sunday.

    Sesame Street/YouTube

Lessons from “Sesame Street” aren’t just for kids — they’re even applicable to the adults battling for control of the Seven Kingdoms.

HBO released a “Game of Thrones”-themed “Sesame Street” video as part of the kids’ show’s 50th anniversary celebration campaign “Respect Brings Us Together.” The spoof teaches a lesson about respect using well-known characters — Elmo, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) — and a lot of fans were into it. They shared some hilarious reactions on Twitter on Thursday, including some wild fan theories, ranging from Elmo being the Night King to this clip being how the show really ends.

    First, here’s the video:

And now, a selection of the tweets on the topic:

  • Peter Dinklage Drops Another Hint About Tyrion’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending

Peter Dinklage Drops Another Hint About Tyrion’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending

    HBO

Peter Dinklage may have just dropped a major hint about how his “Game of Thrones” character, Tyrion Lannister, wraps the series. Or maybe he’s just messing with fans.

The truth is anyone’s guess, but either way, Dinklage gave “Thrones” devotees plenty to think about during a recent interview with Vulture. The actor — who just picked up another Emmy for his role — discussed what it was like to finishing filming on the series, which will officially sign off from HBO after season eight next year, and reflected on what both the character and the experience of shooting the series meant to him.

Dinklage explained that he appreciated that Tyrion “developed a deeper sense of responsibility” as the series went on, and said that wrapping his final day of work was “beautifully bittersweet.” As for how Tyrion himself says goodbye, the actor was scant on detail. But it was hard to miss the giant hint (or was it a giant bit of misdirection?) Dinklage offered.

“I feel very, very — I’m trying to find the right word,” the actor said. “I think he was given a very good conclusion. No matter what that is — death can be a great way out.”

Interviewer David Marchese noted that he didn’t believe Dinklage was actually suggesting that Tyrion dies, “but rather … attempt[ing] to leave open the possibility that the character might meet that fate.” And that certainly might be true. But Dinklage also made other comments recently suggesting that Tyrion is set for a grim end, and that’s already got some fans worried.

Like we said before, Dinklage may just be doing his darnedest to throw viewers off track. After all, HBO and the “Thrones” creative team have been fiercely protective of spoilers throughout the show’s run, and we’d find it odd if they suddenly ignored Dinklage dropping huge hints left and right.

It’s fair to say that fans won’t know anything for sure until the series finale credits roll. We’ll be eagerly awaiting answers until then.

“Game of Thrones” returns for its eighth and final season sometime in the first half of 2019.
