“The Walking Dead: The Complete Eighth Season”

Extras include audio commentaries for three episodes, with showrunner Scott Gimple and episode writers and directors; and the featurettes “Carl Grimes: Leaving a Legacy,” “In Memoriam,” and “The Price of War.”

Check out this exclusive featurette clip with the stars talking about the moral compass of the season:

    “First Reformed”
This acclaimed thriller-drama (easily one of the year’s best films) arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital August 21. Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a struggling church. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks the reverend to counsel her husband, Toller is plunged into his own tormented past-and equally despairing future-until he finds redemption. Extras include audio commentary with director Paul Schrader, and the featurette “Discernment: Contemplating First Reformed.”

New Video on Demand, Streaming, and Digital

    “Adrift”Shailene Woodley, AdriftSTX Films

Shailene Woodley went on a “f*cking miserable” near-starvation diet to make this underrated drama, which is based on a true story. As two sailors set out on a journey across the ocean, Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin) never anticipated they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. Watch the film on Digital August 21, and Blu-ray/DVD/On Demand September 4. Extras include deleted scenes, feature commentary, and three behind-the-scenes featurettes.

    “Crime & Punishment” (Hulu)
Hulu picked up the rights to this award-winning documentary, and it’s partnering with IFC Films for a simultaneous theatrical release and Hulu streaming this Friday, August 24. The documentary goes behind-the-scenes to expose discriminatory policing practices, intimidation, and corruption within the NYC Police Department. “Amidst a landmark class action lawsuit over illegal policing quotas, ‘Crime + Punishment’ chronicles the real lives and struggles of a group of black and Latino whistleblower cops and the young minorities they are pressured to arrest and summons in New York City.” Check out the trailer.

    “Mystery Road” (Acorn TV)
Judy Davis and Aaron Pedersen star in this Outback noir series, which starts streaming Monday, August 20 on Acorn TV. Compared to “an Aussie ‘True Detective’ and ‘Fargo,’” the drama stars Pedersen as detective Jay Swan, who is sent to the remote Outback town of Patterson to investigate the disappearance of two young cattle workers. He is partnered with local copy Emma James (Davis) to solve the case. Check out the trailer.

    “Summer of 84”
This horror-thriller just hit select theaters August 10 and will be available on VOD and Digital HD this Friday, August 24. The official synopsis: “Summer, 1984: The perfect time to be 15 years old and care free. But when neighborhood conspiracy theorist Davey Armstrong (Graham Verchere) begins to suspect his police officer neighbor might be the serial killer all over the local news, he and his three best friends begin an investigation that soon turns dangerous.” If you’re a fan of “Stranger Things” or Stephen King, give this one a whirl. It rules.

    New on Netflix

    “The Innocents” (Netflix Original)The InnocentsNetflix

If you like the supernatural and scary, this could be a good week for you. This British supernatural TV series follows a teen shape-shifter, and her eight-episode journey starts August 24 on Netflix. Guy Pearce, Sorcha Groundsell, and Percelle Ascott star in the mysterious drama: “What you see…is not what you see…June’s adventure starting a new life in London becomes a LOT more complicated than she could have ever expected. Suddenly she finds herself the subject of a kidnap plot, their intentions unknown. Faced with extreme stress her body and identity begin to shift in ways she could have never imagined. The question is not just how…but why?” Watch the trailer.

    “Ghoul” (Netflix Original)
From the makers of “Insidious,” “Get Out,” and “Udta Punjab,” “Ghoul” is a chilling new Indian horror miniseries about “a prisoner who arrives at a remote military interrogation center and turns the tables on his interrogators, exposing their most shameful secrets. You can fight the demons of this world but what about the ones that aren’t?” Here’s the trailer.

    “Follow This” (Netflix Original)
This new docuseries seems like a Netflix version of HBO’s “Vice,” following reporters at BuzzFeed as they probe cultural topics ranging from quirky Internet crazes to safe injection spaces for opioid users. Check it out starting August 23.

    “The After Party” (Netflix Film)
If you want a break from scary stuff and docuseries, check out this comedy film arriving August 24. “When an aspiring rapper goes viral for all the wrong reasons, he thinks his career is over. But when his best friend gets them into a wild NYC after party, he gets one more chance to make the impossible happen.” Here’s the trailer.

    TV Worth Watching

“Mr. Mercedes” Season 2 (Wednesday on Audience Network at 10 p.m.)Mr. MercedesAudience Network

Everything Stephen King touches is gold these days. Brendan Gleeson (Bill Hodges) and Harry Treadaway (Brady Hartsfield) return for Season 2 of this series based on King’s “Mr. Mercedes” trilogy. Be warned, though: Season 2 will be inspired by the third and final book, “End of Watch,” rather than “Finders Keepers.” During Comic-Con, EP/director Jack Bender explained that it’s because the heroes don’t even come into the story until halfway through the book and that didn’t wash with the TV series plans. The 10-episode second season, which premieres August 22, adds several new stars — including Jack Huston as Hartsfield’s doctor, Felix Badineau; and Maximiliano Hernandez as Assistant DA Antonio Montez.

“America to Me” (Sunday on Starz at 10 p.m.)
This ambitious 10-part docuseries — starting August 26 on Starz — follows students, teachers, and administrators in the suburban Chicago area’s Oak Park and River Forest High School over the course of a year. OPRF is one of the country’s highest performing and diverse public schools, and the series sparks candid conversations about what has succeeded and what has failed in the quest to achieve racial equity and overcome obstacles in our education system.

MTV Music Video Awards (Monday on MTV at 9 p.m.)
Imma let you finish, but you never know what can happen at the VMAs. Cardi B, Beyonce, and Jay-Z lead the nominees for the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, which air live August 20 from Radio City Music Hall.

  • Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

Renée Zellweger Heading to Netflix to Lead New Social Thriller Series ‘What/If’

    Bridget Jones's Baby
    Universal Pictures

Welcome to series television — and the world of streaming — Renée Zellweger!

We haven’t seen too much of the Oscar winner in the past few years, except for “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016 and “Same Kind of Different as Me” in 2017. She has some film projects lined up, but now she also has this new Netflix series “What/If.”

According to Netflix, “What/If” is a “social thriller” series that will explore the ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things. Each season is meant to tackle a different morality tale inspired by culturally consequential source material, and the power of a single fateful decision to change the trajectory of an entire life.

Zellweger has a one-year series regular deal for “What/If.” This will be her first major TV role. She plays a character named Anne; Deadline shared more details:

“I hear the 10-episode first season focuses on two struggling newlyweds who accept a powerful woman’s (Zellweger) ethically perilous proposition to secure a badly needed financial windfall.

Zellweger’s Anne is a shrewd and mercurial San Francisco venture capitalist. She is magnetically charismatic, seductive, charming, even vulnerable when it serves her purpose. But she’s also a virtuoso of deception with a cauldron of destructive secrets, including a deeply buried metaphorical deal with the devil that set the course for her life back when she was still just a girl herself.”

Interesting. So it sounds like this will be another anthology (like so many other shows these days, which is fine) focusing on new characters and stories each season.

“What/If” comes from “Revenge” creator Mike Kelley. The rest of the executive team is pretty impressive, too. Executive Producers: Mike Kelley, Melissa Loy (Page Fright); Alex Gartner, Charles Roven (Atlas Entertainment); Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke (Compari Entertainment).

In addition to this series, we can also look forward to seeing Zellweger as Judy Garland in the musical biodrama “Judy,” which will arrive in theaters either in late 2018 or sometime in 2019.

Ian Somerhalder’s First Photo From New Vampire Drama ‘V-Wars’ Is Bloody Intriguing

    Ian Somerhalder, The Vampire Diaries
    The CW

Yes, Ian Somerhalder is starring in another vampire drama — but he’s not the vampire this time.

It’s clear, though, that he’ll still be spending a lot of time with blood.

Mr. Smolderhotter stars in the upcoming Netflix series “V-Wars” and he shared the first look at his character, Dr. Luther Swann:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BmgtseJAPsq/

Good question. Would you trust that doc? That bloody hand. Bloody knuckles. What’s the story there?

The series is based on the IDW anthology series “V-Wars: Chronicles of the Vampire Wars” by Jonathan Maberry. Here’s more on “V-Wars” from THR:

“[Dr. Luther Swann] enters a world of horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne, into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these vampires. Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.”

    Adrian Holmes plays Michael Fayne.

Jacky Lai plays Kaylee Vo, described by Deadline as “a struggling young online journalist – a would-be Assange who will do or say almost anything to advance her career. A fierce, funny, hustling fringe player, she breaks the biggest story imaginable and soon finds herself a key part of that story with a growing list of deadly enemies.”

Peter Outerbridge plays Calix Niklos, described as “an elegant, malicious science expert on the Homeland Security Team.” Laura Vandervoort will play a character named Mila; Kyle Breitkopf plays Dez; and Kimberly-Sue Murray is Danika.

More stars are featured on Instagram.

The initial report on this series, from back in April, said Ian Somerhalder was planning to also direct some episodes. Somerhalder — who is married to “Twilight” actress Nikki Reed — played Damon Salvatore on “The Vampire Diaries” from 2009 to 2017. He also became a producer on the show, and directed a few episodes.

Brad Turner directed the pilot episode of the Netflix series, and also executive produced. No word yet on the premiere date.

    Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
    Netflix

The Powers That Be did warn/promise fans that “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” would be quite dark. Melissa Joan Hart may not even recognize Kiernan Shipka‘s Sabrina, who seems very rooted to the world of the comic book.

Netflix just shared two new photos from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which streams its first season this October.

These are the first official cast photos, including a shot of Sabrina herself (above), and another (below) of what TVLine called “the dark Baptism of Sabrina” by Father Blackwood (Richard Coyle).

The baptism photo also features Lucy Davis as Hilda Spellman; Miranda Otto as Zelda Spellman; and Abigail Cowen, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle as The Weird Sisters.

    Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
    Netflix

Here’s more on the series from The Hollywood Reporter:

“The show will reimagine the origin and adventures of the comic book character ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ as a dark coming-of-age tale that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft. It’s described as in the vein of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ and ‘The Exorcist’ and finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.

Sabrina Spellman is described as an empowered young woman, half-human, half-witch, who is just beginning her dark education as a sorceress, even as she tries to maintain a normal life as a sophomore at Baxter High. Intelligent, compassionate and brave to the point of recklessness, Sabrina is all that stands between us and the forces of darkness that threaten our world.”

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — Chief Creative Officer at Archie Comics — created “Riverdale” and this series. He already showed off the first look at the new Salem the Cat, plus the perfect official poster for the series.

Although “Sabrina” was originally conceived as a companion series to “Riverdale” — since they are both set in the same Archie Comics universe — “Sabrina” ended up on Netflix instead of The CW, and Aguirre-Sacasa said there are no plans for series crossovers at this time.

“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” starts streaming Friday, October 26 on Netflix.

    DreamWorks Pictures

Double your pleasure, double your Rudd!

Finally, someone has granted our wish to clone Paul RuddThe “Ant-Man” hero has signed on for “Living With Yourself,” a new eight-episode comedy for Netflix.

In the new series, Rudd plays “a man struggling with his life who undergoes a novel treatment to become a better person. He then finds he’s been replaced by a new and improved version — revealing that his own worst enemy is himself.” But how could two Paul Rudds ever be bad?

Netflix’s is describing this as a “‘fresh and inventive’ philosophical comedy that asks if people really want to be better.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, this project was originally ordered to pilot at IFC last year, although not with Paul Rudd. IFC’s budget was reportedly not quite in line with what the producers envisioned, so Netflix picked it up and here we are.

This won’t be Paul Rudd’s first Netflix series: He co-starred in “Mute,” “The Little Prince,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” and “The Fundamentals of Caring.”

No word yet on when “Living With Yourself” will stream.

Netflix’s ‘Outlaw King’ Shares Second Look at Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce

    Outlaw King, Chris Pine
    Netflix

Well, he didn’t get dressed up for nothing.

Chris Pine started filming “Outlaw King” in Scotland last August, and it will arrive on Netflix this November 9. The historical drama reunites Pine with his “Hell or High Water” director David Mackenzie.

We got a first look at Pine as Robert the Bruce last September (see the photo above), but Entertainment Weekly just shared a new look at Pine in character, as part of EW‘s fall movie preview:

    Chris Pine, Outlaw King
    Netflix

Here’s more on “Outlaw King” from ScreenRant:

“Outlaw King tells the real-life story of Robert (Chris Pine), the nobleman-turned outlaw who rallied Scotland to fight back against King Edward I (Stephen Dillane) and his son, the Prince of Wales (Billy Howle), during England’s occupation of medieval Scotland. Pine’s ‘Hell or High Water’ costar Ben Foster was attached to portray Robert’s associate James Douglas early on, but the role ended up being handled by (ex-Quicksilver) Aaron Taylor-Johnson instead. Florence Pugh (‘Lady Macbeth’) also costars here as Elizabeth de Burgh.”

Speaking of Robert the Bruce, you may have seen the news earlier this year that “Braveheart” star Angus Macfadyen will return to the role for a historical drama continuing where “Braveheart” left off. That project is picking up a big cast, too, including Jared Harris and Patrick Fugit.

Anyway, Chris Pine’s “Outlaw King” will stream on Netflix starting Friday, November 9.

  • ’13 Reasons Why’ Stars Push for Raises as Season 3 Starts Production

’13 Reasons Why’ Stars Push for Raises as Season 3 Starts Production

    13 Reasons Why
    Netflix

13 Reasons Why” starts production on Monday. The first table read is scheduled for today.

The stars have started arriving on set:

Everything should still happen on schedule. But last night, Deadline reported that the eight core cast members were still renegotiating their contracts.

Here’s more on that from Deadline:

“We hear Dylan Minnette (Clay Jensen), who has emerged as the sole lead following the departure of original star Katherine Langford, is seeking a Season 3 salary in the $200,000 per episode range, while Brandon Flynn, Alisha Boe, Justin Prentice, Christian Navarro, Miles Heizer, Devin Druid and Ross Butler are looking for about $150,000 an episode.”

The starting salaries back in Season 1 were reportedly in the $20,000 to $60,000 range, except for Dylan Minnette who was reportedly paid around $80,000.

Since the series became an instant hit — and instantly controversial — it’s no surprise the cast would reach for more money.

Deadline also added a difference between this show and “Stranger Things,” another Netflix breakout. The “Stranger Things” adults will reportedly get paid as high as $350,000 an episode for the third season, with the kids getting around $250,000 an episode. But there will only be eight episodes in Season 3. “13 Reasons Why,” on the other hand, is scheduled to have 13 episodes. So the “Stranger Things” crew may make more per episode, but the “13 Reasons” stars get to pick up five more paychecks.

One interesting note in Deadline’s story said Paramount TV/Netflix were apparently aiming to pay the main cast (except for Dylan) $135,000 an episode for Season 3, with the pay rising to $150,000 in Season 4.

    So … they’re planning a Season 4?!

The actors were all expected to still show up for work during salary negotiations, if they weren’t resolved by the time of the Season 3 table read.

“13 Reasons Why” Season 3 will arrive on Netflix in 2019.

Netflix’s new “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is set in the same Archie Comics universe as The CW’s “Riverdale,” and the two series share Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa as creator.

But, as it turns out, fans won’t be getting crossovers “at this time.”

    As Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine:

“Right now, we’re trying to make sure that the shows have their own identity and their own set of rules.”

Netflix’s dark take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch was originally billed as a “Riverdale” spinoff meant to air on The CW. That has obviously changed. There’s still potential for a crossover down the line, just not anytime soon.

However, The CW president Mark Pedowitz did tease a real upcoming “Riverdale” spinoff. During the TCA press tour, he said Aguirre-Sacasa had “something in mind” on that front.

Aguirre-Sacasa explained that he hopes to develop the spinoff for next year’s 2019-2020 season:

“We’re really excited, but we’re still early on in the process. [I]t will be VERY different from Riverdale.”

Any theories on what “Riverdale” characters would be getting a spinoff, and how the show would be so different from “Riverdale”? Some fans are guessing Josie and the Pussycats. Guess we’ll see.

“Riverdale” Season 3 premieres October 10 on The CW. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” will start streaming on Netflix on October 26.
