    New on Netflix

This Thursday marks the start of a new month, and you know what that means — a bunch of new titles will be added to Netflix as of November 1, and several more will be leaving.

“Trolls: The Beat Goes On!” Season 4
It’s time to grab your dancing shoes for the new season of DreamWorks’ “Trolls: The Beat Goes On!” Season 4 starts streaming this Friday, November 2 on Netflix.

“Troll Village hosts all new sparkling parties with Poppy, Branch, and the Snack Pack. With colorful, new songs and adventures, the Trolls party it up like never before. Check out this exclusive promo for the new season:

“They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead” (Netflix Original)
Great title. Also great subject, since this documentary — available November 2 — explores a chapter in the life of Orson Welles. “Academy Award winner Morgan Neville (’20 Feet from Stardom”) tells the provocative story of legendary director Orson Welles during the final 15 years of his life, when he struggled to make a Hollywood comeback with one last radical gamble. It’s the untold chapter of one of the greatest careers in film history.” Trailer.

“The Other Side of The Wind” (Netflix Film)
Pssst. If you watch the title above about Orson Welles, you might want to see this one too. It’s a satire of classic and new Hollywood that just debuted in 2018, although it was filmed from 1970 to 1976. “Surrounded by fans and skeptics, grizzled director J.J. ‘Jake’ Hannaford (John Huston) returns from years abroad in Europe to a changed Hollywood, where he attempts to make his comeback: a career summation that can only be the work of cinema’s most adventurous filmmaker, Orson Welles.”  Watch the trailer. This one will be in select theaters and on Netflix this Friday, Nov. 2.

“House of Cards” Season 6 (Netflix Original)
It’s HER turn. The final season of “House of Cards” arrives — sans Kevin Spacey — starting November 2. Claire Underwood (Robin Wright) is in charge, but she’s not finding the POTUS job much easier than her husband did before … *something* happened to him. Netflix is going to have to explain what apparently killed off Frank Underwood between Season 5 and Season 6. Here’s the official trailer.

    “The Holiday Calendar” (Netflix Film)
‘Tis the season for Christmas movies, and Netflix has a bunch of holiday rom-coms coming this month. This one — streaming Nov. 2 — stars Kat Graham as a woman whose life is stuck in a rut until her grandfather (Ron Cephas Jones) gifts her the antique advent calendar that belonged to her grandmother. The calendar is pretty magical, and romantic adventure ensues. Trailer.

Here’s what’s coming soon to Redbox.

“Teen Titans Go! To the Movies”Teen Titans Go to the MoviesWarner Bros.

Here’s a random idea: Have yourself a Nicolas Cage double-feature with this animated film — in which Cage voices Superman — and “Mandy” below. Two very different films brought together by a very different man. Or you could just watch this film on its own when it arrives on Blu-ray and DVD October 30.

The Blu-ray Combo Pack includes the Lil Yachty Music Video: “Teen Titans GO! Rap”; a sing-a-long with Silkie “DC Super Hero Girls: The Late Batsby” Mini-Movie; Red Carpet Mayhem; “Everything is Fake”: Exclusive song not in the movie; Teen Titans GO! “Slender Man”
It’s Halloween. So even though this movie was panned by critics and audiences, it still fits the theme of the week. So here goes: Joey KingJulia Goldani TellesJaz SinclairAnnalise BassoAlex FitzalanTaylor RichardsonJavier Botet, and Jessica Blank all deserve better star in this horror film arriving on Blu-ray and DVD October 30. • ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Season 3, the Final Season, Shares First Photos

‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ Season 3, the Final Season, Shares First Photos

A Series of Unfortunate Events, Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf
    Netflix

Get ready to look awaaaaayyyy, looook away one last time.

The Baudelaire orphans take on Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) for a final face-off in “A Series of Unfortunate Events” Season 3.

Season 3 adapts the final four books in Lemony Snicket/Daniel Handler’s series — “The Slippery Slope, “The Grim Grotto,” “The Penultimate Peril,” and “The End.”

The Netflix series, which has no release date at this point, just shared some first look photos with Entertainment Weekly.

The show’s Twitter account teased the reveal in classic form:

Showrunner Barry Sonnenfeld told EW this is “the most emotional season yet” for Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), Sunny (Presley Smith), and company.

“It’s got a lot of action, and the kids have become much more proactive and less victims.”

He also said they expanded on the end of “The End,” since many fans (my hand is up) were disappointed by the resolution of the book series.

“When you see ‘The End’, you’ll think that it’s what Daniel always had in mind, though it’s not. “It wraps up in such a strong way that you may think we came up with the idea at the beginning of the first season.”

EW‘s first photos show more of Allison Williams as Kit Snicket, sister of Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton).

“She plays a bigger role in the show than she did in the books,” Sonnenfeld said, adding that he cast Williams as Kit after running into her in a British Airways lounge a year ago. “I just looked at her and I thought, ‘She’s Kit!’ She’s sporty, she’s smart, she’s sassy, she’s self-confident, and she’s beautiful, which are all the attributes Kit has.”

There you go, aspiring actresses — hang out in the British Airways lounge more often!

Of course, we’ll also see more of Count Olaf and his partner in crime Esmé Squalor (Lucy Punch). In Season 3, they take in the incredibly irritating Carmelita Spats (Kitana Turnbull), “who insists on dressing like a tap-dancing fairy veterinarian,” as you can see in one photo below.

Sonnenfeld said Count Olaf is “scarier, a little more unhinged, a little bit harder to reason with” this season. But when was he ever easy to reason with?

Season 1 had eight episodes, released on Netflix in January 2017. Season 2 had 10 episodes, dropped March 2018. Season 3 is meant to have seven episodes, coming at some point in 2019.

  • Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson See Horrors in ‘Bird Box’ Trailer

Sandra Bullock and Sarah Paulson See Horrors in ‘Bird Box’ Trailer

    Sandra Bullock in Bird Box
    Netflix

    Keep that blindfold on!

Bird Box” doesn’t have the best horror film ring to it, but it does have the best cast:

    Sandra Bullock
    Sarah Paulson
    John Malkovich
    Trevante Rhodes

The Netflix thriller is directed by Susanne Bier, fresh off her Emmy wins for “The Night Manager.”

You can let it scare you on the darkest night of the year — December 21.

It’s still another story set in a post-apocalyptic world, based on an acclaimed novel. There aren’t too many other comparisons to “The Passage,” but since that apocalyptic series just shared its first trailer too, it feels like one more must be on the way this week to make it an official trend.

    Here’s more on “Bird Box”:

    “Never lose sight of survival.

When a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, only one thing is certain: if you see it, you take your life. Facing the unknown, Malorie finds love, hope and a new beginning only for it to unravel. Now she must flee with her two children down a treacherous river to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But to survive, they’ll have to undertake the perilous two-day journey blindfolded.

Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast that includes Trevante Rhodes, with Sarah Paulson, and John Malkovich in #BirdBox, a compelling new thriller from Academy Award winner Susanne Bier.”

So it’s like “A Quiet Place” but with sight instead of sound? Or “A Quiet Place” is “Bird Box,” which was written first, with sound instead of sight?

    Check out the trailer:

“Bird Box” will play in select theaters and stream on Netflix December 21.

  • ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Director Has Ideas for Season 2

‘The Haunting of Hill House’ Director Has Ideas for Season 2

    Netflix

These days, if something is a success, it usually comes back. Doesn’t matter if it was always meant to be a “limited series” with just a few episodes telling a specific story.

So that’s possibly the case with Netflix‘s “The Haunting of Hill House.” It was a huge success. There was no guarantee that adapting Shirley Jackson’s novel — and really stretching it this far — would turn out well. But it was brilliant.

It also seemed to end on some definitive notes.

That said, when Entertainment Weekly asked director Mike Flanagan (who also directed Carla Gugino in “Gerald’s Game“) about the possibility of Season 2, he left the door open a crack:

“I don’t want to speculate too much about Season 2 until Netflix and Paramount and Amblin let us know if they want one. What I will say, though, is that as far as I’ve ever been concerned with this, the story of the Crain family is told. It’s done.

I think that there are all sorts of different directions we could go in, with the house or with something completely different. I love the idea of an anthology as well. But to me, I felt like the Crains have been through enough, and we left them exactly as we all wanted to remember them, those of us who worked on it.

We toyed with a cliffhanger ending and we toyed with other ideas, but ultimately, in the writers’ room and with the cast and everything else, we really felt like the story demanded a certain kind of closure from us and we were happy to close the book on that family.

That said, I think more than anything, the show is about haunted places and haunted people, as Steve says, and there’s no shortage of either. So, there’s any number of things we could do, in or out of Hill House.”

    The Haunting of Hill House
    Steve Dietl/Netflix

Yeah, the Crains should be left in peace at this point. But if they continue in that house … if they did a story set after this point it would certainly be a crowded house filled with ghosts. But what about a prequel? Or would that be too obvious, since we know exactly where it’s heading?

Might be better to leave Hill House entirely and haunt a new place with new people.

It’s possible the production team will go ahead and tell Flanagan “Yes, we want another season, write something up and let’s go.” Then we’ll see exactly what he meant by those teases about an anthology, and whether a second season would indeed leave Hill House behind.

More than likely, Season 2 would/will end up “The Haunting of _____.”

  • Guillermo Del Toro Is Bringing ‘Pinocchio’ to Netflix as a Stop-Motion Musical

Guillermo Del Toro Is Bringing ‘Pinocchio’ to Netflix as a Stop-Motion Musical

    Pinocchio
    Walt Disney

Guillermo del Toro does ______ immediately has our time and attention, and usually takes our money.

In this case, the Oscar-winning director for “The Shape of Water” doesn’t need our money ’cause we’re already giving it to Netflix each month.

According to TheWrap, del Toro has decided to set up his “Pinocchio” passion project at Netflix, with production expected to begin this fall.

The Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine will work with del Toro on the stop-motion animation production. This will mark del Toro’s first time directing (co-directing, with Mark Gustafson) an animated feature film. He’s also going to co-write and produce the film, which was described as “a stop-motion musical.”

Del Toro created DreamWorks Animation’s “Trollhunters” computer-animated series for Netflix, and it sounds like that relationship sealed the deal for the streamer to get this project.

In a statement, Guillermo del Toro told TheWrap more about his vision for the film:

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio.

In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world.

I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember. After the incredible experience we have had on ‘Trollhunters,’ I am grateful that the talented team at Netflix is giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to introduce audiences everywhere to my version of this strange puppet-turned-real-boy.”

We’re all familiar with the 1940 Disney film “Pinocchio,” but the children’s book “Le avventure di Pinocchio” — “The Adventures of Pinocchio” — was published in 1883 by  Italian author Carlo Collodi.

Before winning Best Director and Best Picture last year for “The Shape of Water,” del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” team won Oscars for makeup, production design, and cinematography. He’s pretty discerning about directing features, with a relatively short list from the early 1990s to today, including “Cronos,” “Mimic,” “Hellboy,” “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” “Blade II,” “Pacific Rim,” and “Crimson Peak.”

The Vampire Diaries” alum just finished filming his upcoming vampire show. This time, he does not play a vampire. Instead, he plays Dr. Luther Swann, who…

“…enters a world of horror when a mysterious disease transforms his best friend, Michael Fayne (Adrian Holmes), into a murderous predator who feeds on other humans. As the disease spreads and more people are transformed, society fractures into opposing camps pitting normal people against the growing number of these vampires. Swann races against time to understand what’s happening, while Fayne rises to become the powerful underground leader of the vampires.”

“V-Wars” is based on the IDW anthology series “V-Wars: Chronicles of the Vampire Wars” by Jonathan Maberry.

Somerhalder shared the first look at his character on set back in August. Now it’s October, and filming has just wrapped in Canada.

Somerhalder shared a couple of Instagram posts on the topic, including some early impassioned pitches for a Season 2 renewal:

As he notes, now it’s time for post-production editing and visual effects work. It’s not clear when Netflix plans to release this series, but Mr. Smolderhotter will definitely let everyone know.

    Get higher, baby!

Narcos: Mexico” is kind of “Narcos” Season 4, and kind of not. It’s a reboot/companion series to the Netflix show. Colombia is out, and Mexico’s Guadalajara cartel is in.

Netflix just shared the official trailer for “Narcos: Mexico,” which stars Michael Peña (“Ant-Man“) and Diego Luna (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“) and starts streaming November 16.

Here’s the full synopsis for the 1980s-set series:

“‘Narcos: Mexico’ will explore the origins of the modern drug war by going back to its roots, beginning at a time when the Mexican trafficking world was a loose and disorganized confederation of independent growers and dealers. Witness the rise of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1980s as Félix Gallardo (Diego Luna) takes the helm, unifying traffickers in order to build an empire.

When DEA agent Kiki Camarena (Michael Peña) moves his wife and young son from California to Guadalajara to take on a new post, he quickly learns that his assignment will be more challenging than he ever could have imagined. As Kiki garners intelligence on Félix and becomes more entangled in his mission, a tragic chain of events unfold, affecting the drug trade and the war against it for years to come.”
