Did you ask Santa for some royal rom-coms? Hope so, ’cause that’s what he’s streaming your way.
Netflix is joining the Christmas movie trend Hallmark and Lifetime have been dominating. Entertainment Weekly just shared three new photos promoting three holiday movies coming soon to Netflix:
• “The Holiday Calendar” with Kat Graham – November 2
• “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding,” sequel to “A Christmas Prince” – November 30
Here’s more on each film, along with their first look photos.
“The Princess Switch”Netflix, via EW
Vanessa Hudgens previewed this movie with the Instagram photo at top, shared after filming wrapped in June. The rom-com is a modern take on “The Prince and the Pauper,” following a duchess and a commoner who swap places after discovering they look exactly alike. Vanessa Hudgens plays Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro, who magically swaps places with a commoner named Stacy a week before Christmas. Thanks to Santa’s helper, Margaret falls for Stacy’s co-worker (Sam Palladio), and Stacy finds love with Margaret’s fiancé, who is a prince.
“A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding”Netflix, via EW
Apparently a lot of people watched “A Christmas Prince,” so hopefully they all return for “The Royal Wedding,” which picks up a year after Amber (Rose McIver) helped Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) take the crown. Now they are preparing for a Christmas wedding — “but everything is thrown into the air when Amber questions whether she’s ready to play queen, and Richard must deal with a ‘political crisis that threatens to tarnish not only the holiday season, but the future of the kingdom.’”
“The Holiday Calendar”Netflix, via EW
“The Vampire Diaries alum Kat Graham plays a photographer who inherits an antique holiday advent calendar that appears to forecast the future. “This Is Us” favorite Ron Cephas Jones co-stars, along with Quincy Brown and Ethan Peck.
That’s just what Netflix has coming in the next month. TV networks will be listing their own holiday schedules pretty soon, with marathons of your favorite Christmas movies/shows, along with more new originals.
“…TVLine has heard that Netflix is seriously considering ending ‘Fuller House’ with its upcoming fourth season. When reached for comment, a Netflix spokesperson told TVLine, ‘No decision has been made about the future of Fuller House; we’re looking forward to the premiere of Season 4 later this year.’”
No reason for a (possible) cancellation was shared, but it’s worth noting that series creator Jeff Franklin was fired as showrunner between Season 3 and the upcoming Season 4. It’s possible that’s a factor, if the show does end after Season 4. Or maybe they’ve just told all the story they want to tell? Or the actors are ready to move on?
If the series does end, it would be nice for the Olsen twins to show up for a cameo. They probably won’t, and they don’t owe anyone anything, but it would still be nice for them to return to the “home” that made them rich and famous.
“Fuller House” Season 4 was filmed in September, TVLine reports, including guest stars Lee Majors and Lindsay Wagner (aka The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman) as a pair of retired detectives; plus Leslie Grossman; Maria Canals-Barrera; and Josh Peck.
“Sherlock” creators and “Doctor Who” writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are working on a “Dracula” miniseries with three 90-minute installments. The Bram Stoker adaptation will air on the BBC in the U.K. and Netflix elsewhere around the world.
“In Transylvania in 1897, the blood drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.”
Moffat and Gatiss (who also plays Mycroft Holmes in “Sherlock”) shared their own tease:
“There have always been stories about great evil. What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”
Here’s more from Charlotte Moore, BBC director of content:
“Genius duo Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss turn their attentions to Dracula for unmissable event television on BBC One.”
And now Larry Tanz, VP of content acquisition at Netflix:
“We can’t wait to bring Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ brilliant storytelling to our members around the world and we are eager to collaborate on yet another series with the BBC.”
Maybe it’s too obvious with the “Sherlock” connection and “Doctor Strange” cape, but screw it — Benedict Cumberbatch should play Count Dracula. If you disagree, come up with your own suggestions.
Deadline announced the news Friday night. It came as a surprise to fans, and also to many non-fans, since “Iron Fist” is part of the Marvel/Netflix series of “Defenders” shows and they seemed … well, less destructible than this. Sure, the first season of “Iron Fist” was pretty much panned, but many of the toughest critics said Season 2 was a lot better. And Season 2 just came out September 7.
Marvel/Disney shared a joint statement with Deadline:
“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”
Live on? Deadline surmised that could be a hint to the show, or at least character, continuing on Disney’s streaming service when that launches late next year.
Here’s an interesting additional note from Deadline:
“I hear that while Marvel wanted Iron Fist to continue on Netflix, the parent company’s new rival to the streamer has put the idea of a resurrection in consideration as it fosters the likes of the already announced Jon Favreau produced Star Wars series too.”
“Netflix has made a terrible decision in cancelling Iron Fist after 2 seasons . There are many fans of the character and the series and most people said that the second season was excellent . I think its unfair that Luke Cage , Jessica Jones and Daredevil get a third season and their shows get mixed reviews too yet Iron Fist gets the shaft . There is so much more potential and stories to be told and its not great fanservice to end the last season on a cliff hanger and not go along with it especially when the second season was more well recieved with critics and fans . So Netflix and Marvel please revise your decision and greenlight a third season for Iron Fist.”
The petition only has about 10,000 signatures at this point, but it may pick up steam.
Meanwhile, stars Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick reacted to the cancellation with gratitude to the fans:

“The Conners” Season 1 (Tuesday on ABC at 8 p.m.) “The Rookie” Season 1 (Tuesday on ABC at 10 p.m.)ABC/Robert Trachtenberg
Roseanne Conner is dead. Long live The Conners? ABC fired Roseanne Barr from the “Roseanne” revival, but kept the rest of the family and gave them their own show. That premieres Tuesday at 8, followed by “The Kids Are all Right” at 8:30 pm., “black-ish” Season 5 at 9 p.m., and “Splitting Up Together” Season 2 at 9:30 p.m. Then “Castle” star Nathan Fillion returns to ABC for his new cop series “The Rookie.”
“The Sentence” (Monday on HBO at 8 p.m.) “My Dinner With Hervé” (Saturday on HBO at 8 p.m.) HBO has a couple of big titles this week — starting with the documentary “The Sentence” on October 15, then the film “My Dinner With Hervé” on October 20.
In “The Sentence,” filmmaker Rudy Valdez draws from hundreds of hours of footage to show the aftermath of his sister Cindy’s 15-year sentence for conspiracy charges related to crimes committed by her deceased ex-boyfriend — something known, in legal terms, as ‘the girlfriend problem.’” “My Dinner With Herve” was inspired by director Sacha Gervasi’s own experiences. The film follows a struggling journalist’s (Jamie Dornan) story of his unlikely friendship with actor Hervé Villechaize (Peter Dinklage), the world’s most famous knife-wielding French dwarf, as it unfolds over one wild night in L.A. — an encounter that will have life-changing consequences for both.
“Arrow” Season 7 (Monday on The CW at 8 p.m.) Half of the Arrowverse returned last week, but not “Arrow” itself (or “Legends of Tomorrow,” which starts next week). Stephen Amell and company return October 15 with the Season 7 premiere, “Inmate 4587”:
“Following Oliver’s (Amell) shocking decision to turn himself over to the FBI and reveal his identity as the Green Arrow to the public, Oliver has spent the past five months in Slabside Maximum Security Prison. Determined to keep a low profile to shorten his sentence for the sake of his family, Oliver is tested when he runs into old foes. Meanwhile, Diggle (David Ramsey) and Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) have taken on new jobs and left their costumes behind but not everyone is following suit. With her focus on William (guest star Jack Moore), Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) tries to start over but when someone from her past resurfaces, things become complicated.”
It’s kind of amazing to think of a docuseries becoming a binge-watching sensation. But that’s what happened with Netflix’s “Making a Murderer,” following Steven Avery from DNA exoneree to convicted murderer. In Part 2 — streaming October 19th — Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos return to the Midwest for 10 new episodes examining the high-stakes post-conviction process. Here’s the trailer.
“Marvel’s Daredevil” Season 3 (Netflix Original) He’s back! “Daredevil” returns October 19 on Netflix. “Missing for months, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) reemerges a broken man, putting into question his future as both vigilante Daredevil and lawyer Matthew Murdock. But when his archenemy Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) is released from prison, Matt must choose between hiding from the world, or embracing his destiny as a hero.” Check out the trailer.
“Wanderlust” (Netflix Original)
This six-episode British TV series stars Toni Collette and Steven Mackintosh as married couple Joy and Alan. In an attempt to revive their dwindling sex lives, this couple from a small English town mutually agree to sleep with other people. Watch how that turns out starting October 19. Here’s the trailer.
Santa Claus rocks out, gets salty with dancing elves, wears a badass “S” necklace, and even gets into a police car chase in “The Christmas Chronicles” teaser.
“If you ever meet Mrs. Claus … maybe just forget this part.”
Netflix just shared the first look at the Christmas movie, which was produced by “Harry Potter” and “Home Alone” director Chris Columbus.
Kurt Russell plays Santa, which we didn’t quite see coming. But he’s still every inch Ego the Living Planet, so … here’s hoping Chris Pratt has a cameo as Santa’s son. Just because.
Since we’re still a few weeks away from Halloween, it feels kinda early for Christmas movie trailers. “The Christmas Chronicles” will actually release on November 22, which is Thanksgiving Day. And even though this “teaser” is already nearly 2 minutes, a full “official trailer” will probably come after Halloween.
Here’s the teaser:
Here’s the official synopsis:
“The Christmas Chronicles, a holiday adventure from producer Chris Columbus (“Home Alone”, “Harry Potter”) and director Clay Kaytis (“The Angry Birds Movie”), tells the story of sister and brother, Kate (Darby Camp) and Teddy Pierce (Judah Lewis), whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about. After staking out Santa’s arrival, they sneak into his sleigh, cause it to crash and nearly derail Christmas. As their wild night unfolds, Kate and Teddy work together with Santa – as you’ve never seen him before – and his loyal Elves to save Christmas before it’s too late.”
Why do Santa and Christmas always need saving? You never get this drama from the Easter bunny.
“The Christmas Chronicles” arrives on Netflix November 22.
Julia Garner is serving some A+ acting right now, from “Ozark” and “The Americans” to “Maniac,” playing drastically different characters in each series. Maybe she’ll be next on the Emmys list. Jason Bateman was nominated for Season 1 in two categories at the 2018 Emmys: Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Directing for a Drama Series.
There’s no Season 3 release date at this point, but Season 1 came out in July 2017, and Netflix released Season 2 in August 2018, so … let’s go ahead and pencil in Season 3 for next summer.
