  • Elle Fanning’s ‘About Ray’ Trailer Shows Transgender Transition Challenges

Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon star in the new movie “About Ray,” showing how one teen’s transition from a girl named Ramona to a boy named Ray affects his entire family. The Weinstein Company just released the first trailer, which opens with a frank discussion on mood swings and menstrual cycles, and leads to questions like this:

Susan Sarandon’s Dolly: “Why can’t she just be a lesbian?”
Naomi Watts’ Maggie: “Because she’s not a lesbian, Mom, she’s a … boy.”

The trailer shows Ray getting into a fight with other kids while his mom struggles not only with the fear that he may change his mind later in life, but with the fact that she has to track down his absent father to get his consent for the transition.

Here’s the synopsis from The Weinstein Company:

ABOUT RAY tells the stirring and touching story of three generations of a family living under one roof in New York as they must deal with the life-changing transformation by one that ultimately affects them all. Ray (Elle Fanning) is a teenager who has come to the realization that she isn’t meant to be a girl and has decided to transition from female to male. His single mother, Maggie (Naomi Watts), must track down Ray’s biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray’s transition. Dolly (Susan Sarandon), Ray’s lesbian grandmother is having a hard time accepting that she now has a grandson. They must each confront their own identities and learn to embrace change and their strength as a family in order to ultimately find acceptance and understanding.”

Here’s the powerful, emotional — but also warm and funny — trailer:

We should all have parents as wonderful and accepting as Ray’s mom! “About Ray” opens September 18. It looks like it’s going to be a great showcase for both Elle Fanning and Naomi Watts, and — who knows — we may see their names come up around Oscar time.

  • ‘The Dressmaker’ Trailer Has Sexy Kate Winslet, Shirtless Liam Hemsworth

Everything about “The Dressmaker” — a revenge dramedy described as “Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven with a sewing machine” — looks perfect. There’s gorgeous Kate Winslet in full glam mode as Tilly Dunnage, a beautiful misfit who returns to her middle-of-nowhere home in Australia after many years working as a dressmaker in Parisian fashion houses. There’s Liam Hemsworth, all shirtless perfection, as pure-hearted star footballer (and love interest) Teddy. There’s Judy Davis as Tilly’s ailing, eccentric mother. And wouldn’t you know it, there’s Hugo Weaving dressing in women’s clothes again.

“The Dressmaker” is based on the novel by Rosalie Ham, following Tilly as she transforms the locals with her fashions and, in the process, exacts revenge on those who once wrongly accused her of murder. Here’s the new international trailer from Universal Pictures Australia:

“The Dressmaker” will premiere in September at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and it’s set for release October 22 in Australia. We’ll have to wait and see what the official U.S. date turns out to be.

  • Britain Goes BOOM in ‘London Has Fallen’ Teaser Trailer

Another major city has fallen — and it can’t get up! Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman survived 2013’s Washington, D.C.-set “Olympus Has Fallen” and they’re back to watch London bridge go falling down (falling down, falling down) and everything else get blown to bloody bits in the sequel, “London Has Fallen.”

Lions Gate just shared the first teaser trailer, along with this synopsis:

The sequel to the worldwide smash hit Olympus Has Fallen begins in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the western world. But what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate every known landmark in the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.”

    Here goes:

So Eckhart is back as the POTUS, with Freeman as the vice president. Angela Bassett and Melissa Leo have also returned, with British actress Charlotte Riley in a new role. The bombs drop January 22, 2016. Will you be there to see them?

  • Oliver Stone’s ‘Snowden’ Teaser Leaks No Footage of A-List Cast

For a movie about a guy (in)famous for leaking classified information, “Snowden” is playing its own cards close to the vest. For now. Oliver Stone, who lives for this kind of story, directed the political bio thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as former CIA employee Edward Snowden. The movie comes out on Christmas, which means it’s a capital “B” Big Deal. Also a big deal: the rest of the A-list cast, which includes Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson and even — a bit randomly — Nicolas Cage.

The first teaser trailer doesn’t focus on the cast. It doesn’t show them at all. It only lists their names at the end, after a series of facts are shown about the real Edward Snowden (who is also not shown at all). Here’s what we see, amid close-up shots of an American flag, as pensive piano music plays:

    – Army recruit at 20
    – Joined CIA at 22
    – NSA contractor at 26
    – By age 29 the most wanted man in the world

Then we see the upside-down flag, which is meant to be a sign of distress, and also used in the “House of Cards” logo. Check it out:

The December 25 release date suggests Oscar ambitions, but it’s hard to know what to think without any footage. That’s why they call it a teaser!

  • First ‘Creed’ Trailer Shows Rocky Still Packs a Punch

“Creed” is already a hit online, but will it be a knockout in theaters this November? The movie’s tagline is “Your legacy is more than a name,” but the names Sylvester Stallone, Rocky Balboa, Apollo Creed, and Michael B. Jordan are selling this latest entry into the “Rocky” franchise.

The first official “Creed” trailer dropped last night and it already has more than 1,025,000 YouTube views. Jordan stars as the son of Apollo Creed, who heads to Philadelphia to track down his late father’s legendary rival-turned-friend, Rocky Balboa, to ask him to be his own trainer.

Here’s the 2 minute, 43 second trailer. It doesn’t even reveal Stallone until the halfway point, emphasizing that this isn’t his story.

“Creed” is directed by Ryan Coogler, who knocked it out of the park (more sports metaphors!) with Michael B. Jordan in “Fruitvale Station.” “Creed” co-stars Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson, Tony Bellew, Wood Harris (“The Wire” reunion!) and Graham McTavish. It’s set for release on November 25. And now, for good measure, please repeat “Eye of the Tiger” in your head for the rest of the day. You’re welcome.

  • Creepy ‘Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension’ Trailer Promises Final Answers

Bloody Mary! Bloody hell! Bloody finally — the “Paranormal Activity” franchise is officially ending this October with “The Ghost Dimension” and the first official trailer was just released. Producer Jason Blum promised that this movie will answer all of the mythology questions from the past films, and the trailer states, “For the first time you will see the activity” and “Every secret will be revealed.” But even if you haven’t been following any of the mysteries, you can just watch it for the “There’s something behind you…” scares and more shots of people looking into mirrors as the reflections do their own things.

    Check it out:

“Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” follows a new family and their young daughter who move into a house (bad idea – never move in a movie, especially with kids!) and discover a video camera and a box of tapes in the garage. They start watching the tapes, which are at least 20 years old, and one of them features a little girl with the impressive talent to know when to say “bless you” when you sneeze in real time. At least these creepy ghost children are polite…

“The Ghost Dimension” comes out on October 23, just in time for Halloween scares. If you want to prepare, you can rewatch the past movies, from 2007’s “Paranormal Activity” to the 2010 sequel, the 2011 one after that, and the 2012 one after that.

  • Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg Fight for Fatherhood in ‘Daddy’s Home’ Trailer

Who’s your daddy? If you’re very lucky it’s both Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, like the kids in “Daddy’s Home.” The comedy comes out this Christmas, but the first trailer was (wisely) released just in time for Father’s Day, pitting a tough-guy divorced dad (Wahlberg) against a mild-mannered new stepfather (Farrell).

Linda Cardellini plays Wahlberg’s ex, with Farrell as her new husband. The trailer shows the dads competing for the kids’ affection — including bribing them with cash, which never fails. Things get increasingly out of hand, of course, in the manner of all hilarious man-child comedies, but at least this preview gives us a few shots of Wahlberg shirtless with slicked-back hair. (Shallow. Not sorry.) It doesn’t look like the “Freaks and Geeks” alum has much to do besides react to the two guys, but hopefully that’s just the deception of the trailer.

  • ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ Trailer (Hilariously) Confirms Our Suspicions

When the cat’s away, the mice will play. And when the human’s away, the Dachshund will get a massage from the electric mixer, the bird will mess with the remote, and the Poodle will turn off the classical music and headbang to death metal. Yes, pet parents, you suspected as much, and “The Secret Life of Pets” is putting it on screen in a new 3D computer animated feature.

Check out the first official teaser trailer:

Don’t even get us started on that cat eating all of the food in the fridge — they are always the ones to blame when the cake is gone! It’s definitely not us…

“The Secret Life of Pets” takes place in a Manhattan apartment building, following terrier Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) whose life is turned upside-down when his owner brings hope a sloppy mongrel named Duke (Eric Stonestreet). But they must bond when they discover a white rabbit named Snowball (Kevin Hart) is building an army of abandoned pets to take revenge on all the happy pets and their owners.

Although we sniffle at the idea of “abandoned pets,” we’re guessing there’s a happy ending. And on all other fronts the movie sounds great — especially with those three guys leading the voice cast, along with Jenny Slate, Albert Brooks, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Bobby Moynihan, and Hannibal Buress.

“The Secret Life of Pets” is currently scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on July 8, 2016.

  • New ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ Trailer Amps Up the Sexy Spy Action

The first trailer for the Henry Cavill/Armie Hammer spy movie “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” was pretty awesome, but this new one is downright groovy, baby.

Based on the TV show from the 1960s, and set in the early ’60s, the movie follows a CIA agent (Cavill) and a KGB operative (Hammer) in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization working to proliferate nuclear weapons. Sex appeal is provided by the leading men, natch, but also Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki as shown in the trailer, Plus, it looks like Hugh Grant will be back in action with some pithy one-liners. Missed that from him.

All in all, Guy Ritchie‘s movie looks pretty promising — or maybe the trailers are just that good. But it looks like “U.N.C.L.E.” might have the right mix of action, humor, intrigue, randy innuendo, and (so important in a movie like this) bromance.

  • Emma Watson’s Thriller ‘Regression’ Gets a Creepy First Trailer

When Emma Watson is in a movie, you know we’re already like “Accio tickets!” no matter what. Add Ethan Hawke and another “Harry Potter” alum, David Thewlis, and you have “Regression,” a dark thriller whose first official trailer just came out and gave us the heebie-jeebies.

In the movie, directed by Alejandro Amenábar (“The Others”) and scheduled for an August 28 release, Hawke plays a detective investigating the case of a young woman (Watson), who accuses her father (David Dencik) of an unspeakable crime. When the father unexpectedly admits guilt without remembering what really happened, a renowned psychologist (Thewlis) is brought in to help him relive his memories. A horrifying nationwide mystery is revealed, and it’s all teased in this trailer.

So here’s 2 minutes of murky mystery — plus Emma working an American accent:
