‘Game of Thrones’ Has Finally Finished Filming, With Maisie Williams as #LastWomanStanding

    Game of Thrones, Arya Stark
    HBO

A Girl is finished. A list is complete?

Maisie Williams was one of the last people to finish filming in the final season of “Game of Thrones.” She said goodbye to the show on Instagram, getting fans worked up with her bloody shoes and tease that she was the #lastwomanstanding, although #barely.

That certainly doesn’t mean that Arya Stark survives to the end, or that she’s really the last woman alive, since the HBO series routinely shoots scenes out of order. Emilia Clarke shot her final scene as Daenerys Targaryen months ago, before returning to shoot more scenes as Dany.

But still — there’s something fitting about Arya Stark as the final survivor of this Game.

However it turns out, it’s bittersweet to see this girl we saw grow up over eight seasons say farewell:

Question: What’s up with the bloody shoes? It’s not like Arya is likely to be rocking those shoes on screen. That’s a story it would be interesting to hear.

At any rate, “Game of Thrones” is finally actually completely done filming. They had two wrap parties, and stars returning for various things, but it appears that Maisie did make it to the very end in terms of whatever scenes they shot on the last day.

According to Watchers on the Wall, the final day of filming was Friday July 6.

When HBO airs this final Season 8’s six episodes, they will probably also share a nostalgic montage of scenes from the last days of filming. When you watch that, remember that it was this week.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Celebrate ‘The Real Royal Wedding’ of Kit and Rose

It was a nice day for a wildling wedding.

“Game of Thrones” costars Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Rose Leslie (Ygritte) got married this past Saturday up in Scotland, where Rose’s family has a castle. Yes, in real life she’s a highborn lass. In both real and reel life, Kit and Rose fell in love.

Their “Game of Thrones” costars were in attendance for the nuptials — including Emilia Clarke (Jon Snow’s post-Ygritte love interest, Daenerys Targaryen); Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister); Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark); Maisie Williams (Arya Stark); John Bradley (Samwell Tarly); Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth); Joe Dempsie (Gendry); Richard Madden (Robb Stark); Ben Crompton (Dolorous Edd); Conleth Hill (Varys); and more.

Fans couldn’t help but compare this GoT union to U.K.’s real royal weddings:

Haha. Thankfully it wasn’t a Red or even a Purple Wedding. Maybe you could consider it a Plaid Wedding in honor of Scotland — and Madden’s kilt — but overall it looks like it was just perfect.

If only Jon and Ygritte’s story could’ve turned out this beautifully. We’ll always imagine they just stayed in that cave…

“Game of Thrones” Season 8, the final season, will premiere on HBO in 2019. Rose Leslie’s “The Good Fight” Season 2 recently finished on CBS All Access and will return for Season 3 next year.

  • Maisie Williams Says ‘Shallow Industry’ Limits Her Roles After ‘Game of Thrones’

A Girl deserves better than to be denied roles, and her fans deserve better than to be denied seeing her range after “Game of Thrones.”

Maisie Williams, now 20, has been playing Arya Stark on HBO’s biggest hit drama since she was 12-years-old. It hasn’t always been easing growing up in the public eye. But she’s now in her final year as Arya Stark, looking to her future as an actress. She told the Irish Times it’s been a rude awakening to learn what aspects of that future are blocked to her, and why.

“It’s only now I’m starting to realize the characters that are available to me because of the way I look and the characters that aren’t available to me. It’s a very shallow industry. And I don’t look like someone who is cast in roles that are, well, sexualized. Don’t get me wrong. I’m completely in awe of Hollywood’s leading ladies. I love looking at those totally jaw-droppingly beautiful women. But I think it’s sad that you only get to see one type of beautiful on screen.”

Hear, hear. And can we add that it’s refreshing that she’s not taking the angle that she herself should have to change to fit into the existing industry? She recognizes the problem is on the shallow end: Judging performers primarily for a certain look instead of what else — everything else! — they can bring to a role. So many stars (male and female) end up just following the lead of casting directors and agents and try and change their looks to match the current expectations. Otherwise, they won’t get work. Well, it’s time the expectations changed.

Not that Maisie seems to be aiming for roles that are “sexualized,” she just realizes that kind of sexy/hot archetype is what the casting folks want. This is not the first time she has brought up how the industry is still primarily focused on casting for “hotness,” as if being “hot” is a personality trait of its own. Here’s what she told the London Evening Standard back in 2015:

“There are a lot of roles that come in that are ‘the girlfriend’ or ‘the hot piece’ in a movie or TV series. That’s something I’ve seen first-hand and read all the time. It will say ‘Derek: intelligent, good with kids, funny, really good at this’ and then it will say ‘Sandra: hot in a sort of cute way’ — and that’s all you get. That’s the way your character is described, so going into an audition you are channelling ‘hot,’ which isn’t like a person, that’s not who a person is. That’s what I see and that’s what needs to change. I’ve been lucky enough to play a very great female character from a young age, who is a fantastic role model for girls.”

She saw that and spoke out about it three years ago when she was still a teen. That’s such a good sign for the future — if anyone listens to her. Jessica Chastain recently mocked the “hot” obsession in a funny “Tonight Show” video, showing it’s not just Maisie who deals with that vague industry mandate.

Thankfully Maisie Williams is still getting roles, including in “The New Mutants,” now coming out next year, and a voice role in “Early Man,” which will be released in theaters on February 16. The final season of “Game of Thrones” will premiere in 2019.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans Want Arya Stark to Get Her Own Spinoff

A Girl would make a perfect “Game of Thrones” spinoff lead.

“Seinfeld” already did a show about nothing, but how about a show about No One? Sure, the GoT spinoffs HBO has in development are all reportedly prequels, but there are also reportedly *five* of them. Can’t at least one of them be an actual “spinoff” spinning off an existing character into her own series?

Who wouldn’t watch assassin Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) having adventures beyond Winterfell? She could have guest appearances from her new semi-adoptive parents, Brienne and The Hound, and maybe spend more time with Gendry. (Fans have a lot of ideas when it comes to her supporting cast. See below.)

“Game of Thrones” Season 7 just ended, and there are only six episodes left in total. It’s unclear how much Arya we can expect in Season 8. She at least needs to reunite with Jon Snow. At least.

Season 7 started with Arya ending House Frey in an epic cold open, and the finale saved room for Arya the Assassin to get in one last key kill. All season long, fans have tweeted their awe for Arya, and hope to see more of the serial slayer in one of the upcoming spinoffs:

What say you? HBO, author George R.R. Martin, and actress Maisie Williams may have no interest in an Arya spinoff, but if the fans demand it … would they dare say no?

  • Watch ‘Game of Thrones’ Sisters Do Ned Stark Impressions (One of Them Is Pretty Good)

If only the Stark sisters got along this well on “Game of Thrones” Season 7.

This priceless video has an entire sequence with GoT stars Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) shouting “Becky, Becky, BECKY, look at her butt!” in Sean Bean’s Ned Stark accent.

The Ned Stark version of Sir Mix-a-Lot comes after Turner’s surprisingly good Ned Stark version of “Hakuna Matata” from “The Lion King.” Arya > Sansa most of the time on screen, but Turner wins The Game of Sean Bean impressions.

It’s all part of “Carpool: Karaoke: The Series,” an off-shoot of the popular segments on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” This 3-minute video is an extended preview of the GoT BFFs’ episode.

Watch the preview:At least Ned’s daughters are close in real life.

On Season 7, Arya just came back to Winterfell and her reunion with Sansa was less than warm. Now Arya and Sansa are tense to the point of death threats. We can only expect the tension to get thicker in the “Game of Thrones” Season 7 finale, which airs this Sunday, Aug. 27 at 9 p.m. on HBO.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Fans React to Ed Sheeran Cameo: Not Bad or Distracting Fail?

Shall we begin … by asking how you felt about that big “Game of Thrones” cameo?

Spoilers ahead from the Season 7 premiere, “Dragonstone.”

Most fans knew Ed Sheeran would have a Season 7 cameo, but we didn’t know it would be in the premiere, and we didn’t know it would so obviously be Ed Sheeran. It was hardly subtle, unlike some of the past celebrity/musician appearances on the show. Sheeran even got to take on a bit of a role from one of the books, Symon Silver Tongue, whose song “Hands of Gold” was taken from George R.R. Martin’s book, as originally written as a jab at Tyrion Lannister.

The GoT showrunners cast Sheeran as a surprise for fan Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), and Arya shares the scene with Sheeran’s singer, who is also a Lannister soldier.Fans gave Sheeran’s cameo mixed reviews — and so many jokes based off his song lyrics. The pop star’s loyal fans were thrilled, but it would be reaching to say the GoT fandom was fully supportive. Many will only be happy if Winter comes for House Sheeran.

Here’s what fans were thinking out loud:

If it’s just a cameo, that should be it. No chance to murder him. No more songs. Instead, “Game of Thrones” Season 7 will chug along with out him, continuing Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

  • ‘X-Men: New Mutants’ Snags Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy

Game of Thrones” — now the actress who plays Arya Stark will be turning into a wolf herself in a new “X-Men” spinoff as Scottish mutant Wolfsbane.

She and Anya Taylor-Joy of “The Witch” are headlining the X-Men spinoff “X-Men: New Mutants,” THR reports.

Taylor-Joy, who also starred in “Split” and “Morgan,” will play Russian teen Magik, who uses teleportation discs to travel. She also happens to be the sister of Colossus, who appeared in “Deadpool.”

Fox is currently conducting searches for a Native American actress to play Cheyenne mutant Moonstar and a South American to play Brazilian Sunspot, per THR.

Also yet to be cast in the teen-driven film: Kentucky-born Cannonball and an alien named Warlock.

Josh Boone of “The Fault in Our Stars” will direct and is co-writing the script. The movie is slated to start filming in July with an April 13, 2018 release date.

The X-Men-verse already tapped Williams’ “Game of Thrones” sister, Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), who played young Jean Grey “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

  • Ed Sheeran Will Be in ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 as a Gift to Maisie Williams

Ed Sheeran Performs On NBC's 'Today'Hope you’re in love with the shape of “Game of Thrones” Season 7.

GoT showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss were with stars Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) at a SXSW panel in Austin on Sunday, and they announced another guest cameo.

Benioff: “For years we were trying to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie and this year we finally did it.”

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Roaming ShowNot a big fan of celebrity cameos on any show — it’s a distracting gimmick that takes away from the story — but it is sweet to think of the showrunners working behind-the-scenes to make one of their best and brightest stars happy. Then again, it’s not like she’s never met him or couldn’t hang out with him elsewhere.

Sheeran addressed the news with a link to a post on his appearance:

There were rumors that UFC fighter Conor McGregor would have a cameo this season. Past seasons have featured musician cameos from Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, Will Champion from Coldplay, Sigur Rós, and Mastodon. As Vanity Fair noted, we don’t know yet if Sheeran will be performing or singing (or both) or if he’ll have an unrecognizable cameo like the members of Mastadon, who played zombified wildlings.

17th Annual AFI Awards - ArrivalsDuring the panel, the showrunners talked about the boring, unglam process of shooting a cameo. They said Jonsi Birgisson of Sigur Ros wanted to leave after he shot his close-up during Joffrey’s wedding in Season 3, and didn’t realize he’d have to hang out for several more days. (You may recall Sigur Ros’s haunting cover of “The Rains of Castamere.”)

Weiss: “A lot of [music artists] say they would they would like to [be on the show], and then we tell them [shooting a scene] is so boring. ‘You’re gonna hate this — you’re going to be sitting around three days for 12 hours a day.’”

Then stop giving cameos to musicians? Season 7 premieres July 16 on HBO.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’: Maisie Williams Sent Sophie Turner the Cutest 21st Birthday Note

21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Red CarpetStark sisters 4EVA. “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) turned 21 today, February 21, and her on-screen sister Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) honored the milestone with the sweetest b-day post.

Turner and Williams have been close friends from the start of the HBO show, which began filming in 2010 for its 2011 debut. Williams will turn 20 on April 15, so she was barely a teen when she first met Turner. A lot has changed in the past several years, but one thing remains the same: Turner is way taller than Williams. Their love for each other hasn’t changed either, and Williams worked both angles into her cute birthday post:

    All together now: Awwwww.

Turner’s height is listed at 5’9″ and Williams is 5’1″, but when it comes to the Stark sisters, Arya is the real powerhouse. (For now, anyway.) We can’t wait to see the Northern lasses back in action in “Game of Thrones” Season 7, which will show up sometime this summer.

Here are a couple of other great b-day posts honoring Turner’s big day:

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Ends With ‘a Huge Cliffhanger’

We all love huge cliffhangers, right? (Shut up, “Walking Dead” fans.) “Game of Thrones” only has two seasons left, with Season 7’s seven episodes arriving this summer. Apparently those seven episodes will leave us hanging on the edge of our seats. Brace yourselves for Is Jon Snow Really Dead Part II!

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) has become the official spokesperson for the show, and she teased Season 7 to Time Out London:

“It’s just kind of tumbling now. We’ve come to the climax and it’s rolling down to the end. It’s exciting. I really felt like at the end of last season everything was set up for how it was going to end. Every character came to a little junction in their lives. Now we’re all going to crash down together to however this show ends.”

What else can we expect? “A huge cliffhanger,” she laughs.

The last time GoT ended on what one could consider “a huge cliffhanger,” Kit Harington and his hair were stalked for nearly a year so fans could rest assured that Jon Snow was not really that dead. The show probably has a different cliffhanger in mind this time, but we won’t be shocked if Jon is involved again.

GoT Season 7 is meant to keep filming through February; the final Season 8 hasn’t even been announced yet, because HBO said they are waiting for a final episode count from the showrunners. We’re still expecting it to be six, or thereabouts, in keeping with the two final seasons being shorter-than-usual.

Maisie Williams said she and her fellow castmates don’t know anything about the series end game, but she did confirm that if Arya makes it to Season 8 she is going to join the others who get matching tattoos. “‘We’re all waiting to see if we do make it. I was lucky enough to be in Season 1, even the pilot episode. If I do make it to Season 8 I will get it. It would be rude not to!”

“Game of Thrones” Season 7 premieres this summer on HBO. We are on standby for the first official trailer…
