    • Lee Pace and Maisie Williams are leading the new recruits for ‘Practical Magic 2’
    • Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are back to star.
    • Susanne Bier is directing the movie.

It’s clearly the time for long-awaited sequels to much-loved movies announcing clutches of new casting to support their returning stars.

With ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ recently adding actors, it’s the turn of ‘Practical Magic 2’, which will see the return of Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock as witch sisters Gillian and Sally Owens.

According to Deadline, new for the sequel will be Lee Pace (‘Foundation’), Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’) Xolo Maridueña (‘Blue Beetle’), and Solly McLeod (‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’). We also now have confirmation that Joey King is officially aboard after previously being in talks.

That’s not all –– Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who appeared alongside Bullock and Kidman in the original movie –– will reprise their roles.

What’s the story of ‘Practical Magic’?

‘Practical Magic’ adapts Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel. The movie follows two sisters, Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman), who come from a long line of witches.

Orphaned at a young age, they are raised by their eccentric aunts, who embrace their magical heritage. However, the Owens family is cursed: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman is doomed to an untimely death.

Subsequently, Sally and Gillian struggle with their powers and the consequences of the family curse. Sally attempts to lead a normal life, distancing herself from magic, but tragedy strikes when her husband dies.

Gillian, on the other hand, lives a wild life, embracing her magical abilities. The sisters are reunited when Gillian finds herself in a dangerous relationship with Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), a violent man. In an effort to protect Gillian, the sisters accidentally kill Jimmy, leading to a series of supernatural events as they attempt to hide his death and ultimately break the family curse.

What will be the story for ‘Practical Magic 2’?

While there are zero official details are available for the new movie’s storyline, King’s casting does open up a narrative alley we figured they’d take.

She’ll play one of Bullock’s daughters, the one who discovers the dark family secrets and her own dark powers, plunging the family into a crisis.

As for the newcomers (beyond King), we don’t yet know their roles.

But Wiest and Channing, of course, will be Aunt Jet and Aunt Frances respectively, who always have wise words for their nieces (and now, grand-nieces).

Akiva Goldsman, who worked on the script for the original, is back, with Georgia Pritchett, a veteran of ‘Veep’ and ‘Succession,’ also credited.

What else has Susanne Bier made?

Bier is a hugely respected Danish filmmaker who is more normally found in the indie sphere, though has been diversifying into premium TV in recent years.

She got her start with 1991’s ‘Freud Leaving Home’ and has since made the likes of ‘Like It Never Was Before,’ ‘Credo,’ ‘The One and Only,’ ‘Open Hearts,’ ‘After the Wedding,’ ‘Things We Lost in the Fire,’ ‘Serena’ and ‘In a Better World,’ which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year in 2011.

Her work has scored many other accolades and trophies, and she’s also been behind projects such as John le Carré adaptation ‘The Night Manager’ and White House drama ‘The First Lady.’ She is the first female director to win a Golden GlobeEmmy and European Film Award, collectively.

Perhaps most pertinent to ‘Practical Magic’ and its stars is her previous collaborations with both Bullock and Kidman.

Bullock starred in Bier’s Netflix thriller ‘Bird Box,’ the story of a world plunged into chaos when aliens arrive who send anyone who glimpses them mad.

As for Kidman, Bier handled HBO drama ‘The Undoing,’ which saw the actor starring alongside Hugh Grant in a murder mystery. And more recently, Bier tackled all the episodes of Netflix drama ‘The Perfect Couple,’ with Kidman playing the icy matriarch of a wealthy, dysfunctional family.

Here’s the statement from the filmmaking team on the new casting choices:

“Twenty-five years ago, Sally, Gillian, Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny flew off the pages of Alice Hoffman’s beloved novel and into theaters around the world, and we are thrilled to bring the Owens family back to the big screen with Joey, Lee, Maisie, Solly and Xolo joining the next chapter in our story. The enduring affection for these characters has been our inspiration to deliver the next installment in the Owens’ story to new fans, and those who’ve been with us since the beginning.”

When will ‘Practical Magic 2’ be in theaters?

We do now know when Warners is looking to release the sequel –– and in theaters, rather than sending it direct to streaming service HBO Max –– September 18th, 2026.

Production is currently underway in England, so all looks good for the sequel to hit that date.

‘The Luckiest Man in America’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on April 4th, ‘The Luckiest Man in America’ takes a real-life event as the basis for a comedy drama about a quiz show champ whose winning ways come into question during one fraught day filming ‘Press Your Luck.’

Paul Walter Hauser leads a considerable cast for the new movie, directed by Samir Oliveros from a script he wrote with Maggie Briggs.

While younger (well, younger-ish, the figures for the likes of Gen Z and Gen Alpha watching a legacy game show are probably not healthy) audiences know ‘Press Your Luck’ as the quiz show hosted by Elizabeth Banks, that version does sometimes call back to the history of the series, which stretches back to 1983.

This new movie charts a real-life event that happened during a taping on the show, when the most unlikely player somehow managed to get on to set as a contestant. It’s certainly a strange story, and Samir Oliveros’ take on does include some invention wrapped around the basic facts. He only had the actual episode recording to go on (which is on YouTube), so there are scenes set in the control room and before Michael Larson gets on the set that are entirely fabricated.

Yet the whole does hang together decently, the tone pretty much consistent and the ticking clock quality of the day on set giving the movie as a whole a propulsive quality. Yet it’s also burdened with a story that doesn’t quite work and despite some impressive work from a talented cast, not everything functions as it should.

    Script and Direction

Director Oliveros and his co-writer Briggs (who came up with the story –– at least the fictional chunks), have put plenty of work into figuring out the chaos that must have erupted between executives and other staff when Larson’s winning streak really got moving and the bosses started to suspect that he might have figured out the patterns of the board to make sure he kept winning and not land on the show’s famous “Whammy” characters, the little red cartoons who gleefully take any winnings (and ultimately banish a player from the show if they hit more than four).

All of that is clearly conveyed in the script, and while Michael Larson was obviously a real person, it’s impressive how much detail the writers have filled in about him and those who are both on stage and off it. The issue comes when the story starts to run out of steam and little and even Larson isn’t well served.

Oliveros’ directing style does well mimicking the look of the series back in the day, and segues effectively between an authentic 1980s style and the feel of the behind-the-scenes areas.

Paul Walter Hauser is a big part of why the movie succeeds at all. As Larson, he’s a complicated mix of quirky loner and desperate grifter. And he’s excellent as both sides of the character –– at once loveable and weird, but always believable.

It’s a pretty perfect match for the actor’s skillset, since Hauser has bringing people like these to screens for years now, and he’s also had some experience walking the fine line when playing characters based on real-world personalities.

You’ll completely buy him as this oddball, ice cream truck-driving obsessive, whose past life is littered with money making schemes and a marriage that is seriously on the rocks.

Twitchy and nervous when it starts to appear that his appearance on the show might just be his latest scheme, Hauser is great portraying Larson.

He’s matched by David Strathairn (no stranger to a based-on-truth story himself), the veteran actor playing egotistical, calculating executive producer Bill Carruthers. He’s all strutting peacock-disguised-as-homey-man-of-the-people, who makes the decision to override his casting team to invite Larson onto the show after the potential contestant takes someone else’s audition spot.

Strathairn is also great at portraying Carruthers’ flop sweat as Larson’s winning ways continue as he’s forced to justify the decision to those who write his paychecks.

Walton Goggins makes an impact as Peter Tomarken, the host of the show, who becomes increasingly worried for his own job and starts to improvise as Larson’s earnings rack up. Playing one of the few well-known people in the story, he brings his own flair to it, but doesn’t deviate so far from the recognizable version of Tomarken.

Shamier Anderson plays Chuck, the head of casting for the show, who buts heads with Carruthers’ over Larson’s last-minute selection. Anderson does excellent work as the character, fully channeling his frustration while keeping him relatable.

In smaller roles, we have ‘Game of Thrones’ veteran Maisie Williams as Sylvia, a fresh-faced production assistant on the show who wrangles the talent and conducts tours. She’s fine in a more limited scope. Likewise Brian Geraghty and Patti Harrison as Larson’s fellow contestants.

Finally, Haley Bennett doesn’t have too much to do as Larson’s wife, but she brings some healthy, genuine emotion to the proceedings.

    Final Thoughts

Given how fascinating the real-life story of the movie is, it’s frustrating at times that it rarely feels like ‘The Luckiest Man in America’ takes full advantage of it.

Yet it’s still a well-considered take on a particular piece of quiz show history.

What is the plot of ‘The Luckiest Man in America’?

1984, Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser), an unemployed ice-cream truck driver from Ohio, steps onto the game show “Press Your Luck” harboring a secret: the key to endless amounts of money. But his winning streak gets threatened when the executives in the control room start to uncover his real motivations.

  • Maisie Williams Has One Big Regret About the ‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale

Maisie Williams Has One Big Regret About the ‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale

    HBO

SPOILERS: Stop reading now if you haven’t watched the “Game of Thrones” series finale. Or been spoiled 2000 times about every detail on Twitter and Tumblr.

If you weren’t entirely pleased with how the epic series ended, you’re not alone.

Talking to EW, Maisie Williams admitted she had an entirely different idea of how Arya’s final scenes would play out.

Williams told EW, “I wanted Arya to kill Cersei even if it means [Arya] dies too. Even up to the point when Cersei’s with Jaime I thought [while reading the script], ‘He’s going to whip off his face [and reveal its Arya]’ and they’re both going to die. I thought that’s what Arya’s drive has been.”

Of course, instead of perishing at the hands of Arya, Cersei died along with Jaime in the cave-in caused by Daenerys’s fiery assault.

Williams said she would have loved to have one more scene with Lena Headey, who plays Cersei. “I just wanted to be on set with Lena again, she’s good fun,” said.

Headey also regretted not having the final showdown that the entire series seemed to be leading up to: “I lived that fantasy until I read the script,” Headey said. “It was nothing that I had dreamt about. It was a bit of come down and you have to accept that it wasn’t to be.” But, she added, “There is something poetic about the way it all happens in the end with her and Jaime.”

Now that Williams has given it some thought, she’s OK with the final, more hopeful note for Arya: “When The Hound asks her if she has another option, all of a sudden there are so many more things in [Arya’s] life that she can live for, that she can do. It was a shock for me because that wasn’t how I envisioned her arc going this year. Then I realized there were other things I could play, bringing Arya back to being a 16-year-old again.”

She said she never anticipated a happy ending for Arya, but, “it gave me a place to take Arya that I never thought I’d go with her again.”

As she previously told The Guardian before the finale aired, her final scene was “perfect.”

“I ended on the perfect scene. I was alone – shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone. But I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches. [Her own speech] wasn’t something I planned, but in that moment I realized what the show meant to me.”

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Maisie Williams Teases Arya and Sansa Bond in Final Season

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Maisie Williams Teases Arya and Sansa Bond in Final Season

    Helen Sloan/HBO

The Stark sisters have finally reunited on “Game of Thrones,” and their bond will be stronger than ever as the series moves into its final season. That’s the word from star Maisie Williams, who’s sharing some intriguing teases about her character, Arya.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Williams dished about season eight — set to debut next month  — and the inevitable high body count, no doubt thanks in large part to the epic, record-breaking Battle of Winterfell. While the actress stayed mum on her character’s ultimate fate in that clash, she did offer this tease: “There’s a lot of death this year.”

As if we’d expect anything else from “Thrones.”

Regardless of where Arya ends up, Williams told EW that she appreciated the character’s journey throughout the series, and how the show set her on a “full circle” path. In season eight, Arya is caught between fighting for the normalcy of her youth, while “remaining on this path to try and kill Cersei and remembering her list and getting closer to that,” the actress said.

“So there’s this split with Arya between trying to be who she wants to be — getting back to the naïveté and innocence with her family — and unfinished business,” Williams added.

As for her bond with her family, Arya and Sansa (Sophie Turner) will present a united front in season eight, especially when it comes to dealing with their adopted brother, Jon Snow (Kit Harington).

“It’s not often you see a character siding with Sansa who’s not manipulating her,” Williams explained to EW. “Last season it was really tough for Sansa because Jon was thinking with his penis and it kind of made Sansa look bitter. This season you see Arya teaming with Sansa and sometimes calling out Jon. It felt nice and powerful to stand next to Sophie. Sophie and I are the tightest of friends when sitting across from anyone, so no acting required.”

Fans will find out soon enough what happens to Arya and the rest of Winterfell when the eighth and final season of “Game of Thrones” premieres on HBO on April 14.

Richard Madden, who played doomed older brother Robb Stark on the HBO series was there, as was Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and John Bradley (Samwell Tarly).

Williams shared a sweet Instagram photo of her and Madden hugging it out. Madden shared the same photo, with the caption: “Last night watching Maisie Williams being brilliant in her new play.”

  • Maisie Williams Ended ‘Game of Thrones’ Filming on ‘the Perfect Scene’

Maisie Williams Ended ‘Game of Thrones’ Filming on ‘the Perfect Scene’

    Game of Thrones, Arya Stark
    HBO

    A Girl was alone…

Maisie Williams finished filming “Game of Thrones” in July. She filmed right up to the end and was, by her own account, the #lastwomanstanding. (She took pains to say that wasn’t a spoiler.) She said goodbye to the show, the city of Belfast, and her character of Arya Stark.

A few months later, Williams told The Guardian she’s not in mourning for GoT or her character, because she got to say goodbye at the right time:

“I got to the end and I didn’t want more. I had exhausted every possible piece of Arya. And this season was quite big for me. I had a lot more to do. Mainly because there’s just less characters now, so everyone’s got more to do.”

She told The Guardian her final scene as Arya was “beautiful”:

“I ended on the perfect scene. I was alone – shocker! Arya’s always bloody alone. But I was alone and I had watched a lot of other people wrap. I knew the drill, I had seen the tears and heard the speeches. [Her own speech] wasn’t something I planned, but in that moment I realized what the show meant to me.”

Williams said, after her final scene and speech, she went to her trailer to be alone for a while, then went out with some coworkers for a fancy mean and “a lot of sake.”

    HBO

Once “Game of Thrones” airs its final season next year, Williams will probably let us know which scene was that “perfect” final scene. They do film scenes out of order, so it’s not necessarily the last scene we’ll see featuring Arya. But

it’s a good sign for Arya that Williams filmed right up to the end.

It’s going to be a whole nostalgia tour with the cast and crew next year, once each episode airs and it’s the last scene for this star, and then that character, etc. We’ve been warned that not everyone will be happy with how the show ends — we’re already worried for Dany — but we’re staying confident in the showrunners’ storytelling.

“Game of Thrones” is adapting George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” novels, which have given us many, many welcome and unwelcome curveballs.

As Ramsay Bolton put it: “If you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”

But we are hoping for a fitting ending to this song.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 will air on HBO next year. We don’t have a specific air date yet — or any official trailer, poster, photos, etc. — but supposedly the six episodes will start airing in the first half of 2019.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Will Leave Many Fans ‘Disappointed,’ Others ‘Over the Moon’

‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Will Leave Many Fans ‘Disappointed,’ Others ‘Over the Moon’

Sansa Stark, Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones
    HBO

Sophie Turner seems to agree with Kit Harington that the “Game of Thrones” series finale won’t make everyone happy.

You had to expect that was the case anyway, but from Turner’s perspective it will probably be divisive — making *some* fans very happy, and others disappointed.

Here’s what Turner told IGN about her reaction to reading the “Game of Thrones” ending for the first time:

“A lot of tears. I think, you know, as an actor it was really satisfying — I think for everyone, everyone’s storylines — to be able to act out the way that it all ends. It was really satisfying for us. Who knows if it will be satisfying for the fans. I think a lot of fans will be disappointed and a lot of fans will be over the moon, I think. I think it will be really interesting to see people’s reactions, but for me reading the script it was just like heartbreaking to read at the very final page of the script it just says, ‘End of Game of Thrones’. That was really emotional.”

    Game of Thrones Cersei gif
    HBO

Reading between the lines — never a safe thing to do, but screw it — it sounds like some major characters must do well while others don’t (and possibly die). If you’re batting for, just say, Dany to end the series in charge, maybe you’ll be disappointed? But if you’re Team Jon maybe you’ll be over the moon? And  maybe we don’t get all the answers we want, all the theories confirmed, or all the fan-service romances paired up. (Brienne doesn’t *have* to end up with anyone, you know.)

Turner also repeated more wonderful things about Sansa’s storyline, including this note:

“…at the end of this season, I feel she is the most self-assured character in the show.”

So she makes it to the end? That would be reassuring. We were worried. We’re still worried.

Game of Thrones, Kit Harington, Jon Snow
    HBO

Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) have also spoken about the ending, with Harington cautioning that “not everyone’s going to be happy,” but Coster-Waldau saying the pieces all fit together and the show ends as it should. Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) just said the final season is “incredible” for the women of Westeros, who are now in charge.

Turner made her comments to IGN while also promoting the first trailer for “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” which just came out.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8, the final season, has six episodes which will premiere at some point in the first half of 2019 on HBO.

For the record, this Iron Throne theory is the No. 1 theory we’re hoping pans out. But if not, we’ll try to stay over the moon anyway.

  • Maisie Williams: Final ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Is ‘Incredible’ for the Women

Maisie Williams: Final ‘Game of Thrones’ Season Is ‘Incredible’ for the Women

Game of Thrones, Arya Stark, Maisie Williams
    HBO

Who run the world of Westeros? Girls.

As we enter “Game of Thrones” Season 8, it’s clear the women are running the show.

Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) is on the Iron Throne. Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) is looking to take over. Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) now runs Winterfell, with no more whispers from Littlefinger. Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) — well, Arya can kill entire families with pie. So she’ll be doing whatever the f*ck she wants.

“I’m the serial killer everyone’s rooting for,” Maisie Williams quipped to Elle UK.

Williams promised to Elle that the final season is a great one for the women:

“For me, [Game of Thrones] is a medieval world in which women don’t have a lot of rights, and yet they still prevail. But I do think that as the seasons have gone on, it’s become more and more amazing for women. And this final season is going to be incredible. It just feels great, being on set with all these girls. They’re all ruling, you know, they’re all back on top – it’s pretty impressive.”

Sophie Turner seemed to echo that sentiment, at least for Sansa, recently telling Digital Spy that her character is “a real, true leader of Winterfell now. And that’s where we first see her – as a very protective, empowered lady in charge. It’s the first time you ever see her like that, and it’s so amazing to see her like that – kind of owning her destiny.”

Hopefully the list of ruling women will also include Yara Greyjoy (Gemma Whelan), who wasn’t left in the best position at the end of Season 7. Maybe she’ll ultimately help take down her Uncle Euron in Season 8. And maybe Arya will help take down Cersei, since she’s still on A Girl’s list. Melisandre (Carice van Houten) is also on Arya’s list, and we’re curious about her role in the final season too.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 has six episodes, premiering on HBO in the first half of 2019.

    Helen Sloan/HBO

A girl has finished filming “Game of Thrones,” and so she took a piece of it with her.

After wrapping on the hit HBO fantasy drama’s final season, Maisie Williams earmarked a special item to bring home: Arya Stark’s brown doublet jacket. She discussed her keepsake Wednesday on “The Radio 1 Breakfast Show,” and it’s something she clearly prizes. She told host Nick Grimshaw that she expects to show it to her grandchildren someday.

“I can imagine it being something that I’m like, ‘Oh, I was in this show once upon a time and this was the jacket I wore,’” she said. “And my grandkids are like … ‘Please stop.’”

Her hypothetical descendants might not be moved, but we are. Williams grew up playing Arya Stark; as she mentioned to Grimshaw, she was only 12 when she auditioned for the role. She should have something to remember her fearless character by, and it’s probably safer that it’s Arya’s jacket rather than her sword, Needle.

And now, as touched as we are that Williams has an item to remember the show by, we’re saddened by the reminder it’s ending.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8 will close out the series in 2019.

    Game of Thrones Arya Jaqen

A Girl has a new tattoo to honor the end of “Game of Thrones.”

Sadly, it isn’t “Valar Morghulis,” although … shouldn’t we all just get that together, as a fandom?

Maisie Williams was one of the final people to complete her role on “Game of Thrones.” She posted about being the #lastwomanstanding, although it wasn’t really a spoiler that Arya Stark is the sole female survivor. She was talking about filming, which is often done out of sequential order.

A couple of weeks after that post, she returned to Instagram to show off some new tattoos. One of the photos showed the words “No One” on the back of her neck. Obviously, “Game of Thrones” fans picked up on that, seeing it as a nod to Arya’s time with Jaqen H’ghar and the Faceless Men at the House of Black and White.

You should flip through to see all of the little rascal’s new tattoos, including “No One”:

Also, the tattoo artist had just posted some new tattoos from Williams’ “Game of Thrones” sister, Sophie Turner, and her fiance Joe Jonas:

Turner didn’t get another “Game of Thrones” tattoo, although she recently got inked with a quote from her own character, Sansa Stark.

Both Maisie and Sophie also have matching tattoos of the same date, when they were cast on “Game of Thrones.” It was a life-changing experience, and they’re bonded by it forever.

“Game of Thrones” Season 8, the final season, arrives on HBO in 2019. Hit us up if you’re down for that group “Valar Morghulis” tat.
