John Wick: Chapter 4,’ which is the fourth installment of the ‘John Wick‘ franchise and is once again directed by Chad Stahelski, opens in theaters on March 24th.

What is the Plot of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4?’

Sometime after the events of ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,’ John Wick (Keanu Reeves) has recovered from his injuries and seeks to kill the leader of the High Table, while Winston Scott (Ian McShane) must face the consequences of his actions. The new leader of the High Table, Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård), wants Wick dead and hires hundreds of assassins to kill him, including a tracker named Mr. Nobody (Shamier Anderson), and Caine (Donnie Yen), a blind assassin who is old friends with Wick.

Aided by another old friend, Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), the manager of the Osaka Continental Hotel, as well as the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), Wick agrees to Winston’s dangerous plan to earn him his freedom, which involves Wick rejoining the Ruska Roma, assassinating German High Table member Killa (Scott Adkins), and challenging Marquis Vincent de Gramont to a duel to the death. But first John Wick will need to survive till sunrise if he wants a chance at getting his life back.

Who is in the Cast of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4?’

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ once again stars Keanu Reeves (‘Speed,’ ‘Point Break’) as John Wick, Ian McShane (‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’) as Winston Scott, Laurence Fishburne (‘The Matrix’) as the Bowery King, and the late Lance Reddick (‘Bosch’) as Charon.

The sequel also features new cast members Donnie Yen (‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’) as Caine, Bill Skarsgård (‘Deadpool 2’) as Marquis Vincent de Gramont, Hiroyuki Sanada (‘Avengers: Endgame’) as Shimazu Koji, Shamier Anderson (‘Stowaway’) as Mr. Nobody, Clancy Brown (“Highlander’) as the Harbinger, Scott Adkins (‘The Expendables 2’) as Killa, and Rina Sawayama as Akira.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Bill Skarsgård about his work on ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ how he was a fan before joining the franchise, creating his villainess character, and working with Keanu Reeves.

Moviefone: To begin with, were you a fan of the ‘John Wick’ movies before joining the franchise?

Bill Skarsgård: Yeah, I was a fan of the franchise. I’d seen at least the first two films, possibly all three of them before I was approached to join the fun. It’s special that way, when you’re very familiar with the world as a fan, and then all of a sudden you are on set acting opposite John Wick himself. It’s very strange.

MF: Your character has a very specific look. The way he walks, talks and dresses is very specific. Can you talk about your approach to creating the character?

BS: I mean, they don’t go into any details of who this guy really is or where he comes from. He just appears in the movie. I enjoyed the script, I really enjoyed Chad, and I read it and I think it was initially conceived for an older actor. I was like, “Okay, this is an interesting choice.” I just wanted to play him because there’s no real backstory and I can invent whatever I want with it. I had a bunch of ideas going into who he is and there’s quirkiness, strangeness and delicious sinister moments. I was like, “Okay, he’s in Paris. He’s called the Marquis Vincent de Gramont. Is he French or is he from a French colony somewhere?” I mean, I just went with it and created. Chad really, just gave me the freedom of creating this thing that’s in the movie. I really enjoy that part of it. The franchise is very stylized and Chad had a great concept. It was just such a pleasure to be a part of it.

MF: Finally, what was it like working with Keanu Reeves?

BS: I’ve been a fan of his since I was eight when the first ‘Matrix’ came out. It was truly an honor to be a part of his movie and his franchise, and he couldn’t be a nicer guy. It was surreal acting opposite him, but just the nicest, sweetest guy and such a hard worker, and a genuinely caring actor, and a caring individual. It was just a treat.

    Initial Thoughts

With over-the-top action, more character development, and a satisfying conclusion, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is the best of the ‘John Wick’ sequels and is on par with the original film. Keanu Reeves excels in his signature role, and Donnie Yen is finally given a part in an American film worthy of his great talents.

The Story, the Action and the Direction

2014’s ‘John Wick’ was a revolutionary film for the action genre and helped to rejuvenate Keanu Reeves’ career (more on that later). What felt like a perfect stand-alone action movie was eventually transformed into a huge franchise, thanks to the success of its sequels and upcoming spinoffs. While ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’ was a strong sequel that expanded the “Wick Universe,” ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,’ while a good movie in its own right, was ultimately not as satisfying a conclusion to the series as expected as it basically ended with a “To Be Continued.”

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is absolutely a satisfying ending to the title character’s story (at least for now) and one that fans of the series truly deserve. With the exception of the introduction of Halle Berry’s great character Sofia Al-Azwar in ‘Parabellum,’ who unfortunately does not appear in ‘Chapter 4,’ the third movie does not seem that relevant anymore, as most of the new film follows the same story beats: Wick and Winston atoning for their actions in ‘Chapter 2.’ While I think a trilogy would have made the series stronger in the long run, I understand the studio wanting to stretch it out given its success, and I guess ‘Parabellum’ needed to set up the upcoming spinoff ‘Ballerina.’

Director and former stunt coordinator Chad Stahelski, who upped the game for action movies with the first ‘John Wick’ ups his action game again with this film, which truly contains some amazing fight sequences. And it’s not just the scenes with what Reeves has called “Gun-Fu,” the movie also has “Car-Fun,” as well as “Sword-Fu” moments. The scenes are shot incredibly well and fluid, and allows the audience to follow the wild action without missing a beat. Particularly impressive is a massive gun and sword fight that takes place at the Osaka Continental Hotel, as well as the final set-piece, a 10-minute-plus long fight sequence that takes place on a steep set of outdoor stairs.

    Keanu’s Performance

Keanu Reeves is one of our most beloved, and at times, underrated actors. Reeves has starred in countless modern classics like ‘Point Break,’ ‘Speed,’ and of course ‘The Matrix,’ but it seems like he didn’t finally receive the respect he deserved for his impressive career until he starred in the surprise hit ‘John Wick,’ which completely changed everything for the actor. Keanu is now a national treasure, and his dedication to the role of John Wick, as demonstrated in his training videos on YouTube, shows just how much this role has meant to him, and just how talented an actor he really is.

John Wick was never your typical action character, as his origin story began with the death of his wife (to an illness, not assassination) and his motivation was to avenge the death of the dog she gave him before she died. From inception, this gave the character more depth and made him more emotionally vulnerable than most action heroes. Reeves’ deep emotional connection as an actor is part of what makes him so good as this character and that is only elevated by the new movie. While in some ways he will always be remembered for playing Neo in ‘The Matrix’ series, it’s safe to say John Wick is now Reeves’ signature character. With ‘Chapter 4’ the actor not only brings his character to a satisfying conclusion, but also seems to be at the apex of his talents and career.

Donnie Yen as Caine in 'John Wick: Chapter 4.'

    Donnie Yen’s Caine

Best known for his work on the ‘Ip Man’ series, actor and martial artist Donnie Yen has only appeared in a few American films such as ‘Rogue One’ and ‘XXX: Return of Xander Cage,’ and he has not really been given a chance to show off his talents until now. In ‘Chapter 4,’ Donnie Yen is truly brilliant as Wick’s old friend and adversary Caine, and absolutely shines in the role. He creates a fully formed character as the blind assassin, and is completely believable in the role. His action sequences are some of the best in the film, and he brings a lot of humor to the part, and has great onscreen chemistry with Reeves. There are some hints in the movie that Caine may continue on in future installments or spinoffs, and I for one would love to see Yen return to the role.

    The Villains

While not necessarily a villain, like Caine, Shamier Anderson’s Mr. Nobody is an adversary to Wick and one of the great new characters this film introduces. He is mysterious at first, and we’re not quite sure who’s side he is really on, which makes him more interesting to follow throughout the film. His physicality and skills are a match for Wick, but their mutual love of dogs is key to them possibly calling a truce before film’s end. I was not that familiar with Anderson’s work previous to this movie, but was impressed with his portrayal of the character and would love to see him appear in the franchise again.

Although he is really only in one sequence, action star Scott Adkins steals his scene as Killa, a physically massive German High Table member that poses a threat to Wick. The actor is heavily made-up and physically imposing, while his martial arts skills are well on display, regardless of the character’s size. Character actor Clancy Brown is always good when he appears in small but pivotal roles, and has another strong one here as the Harbinger, who works for the High Table.

But the true villain of the movie is the Marquis Vincent de Gramont, played by Bill Skarsgård. The actor does his best with the material, but like Alfie Allen’s Tarasov in the first movie, and Riccardo Scamarcio’s Santino D’Antonio in the second, the character comes off as a spoiled brat, and without the power of the High Table, one on one, is no threat for Wick, which does play out in the final scenes of the movie. He’s your standard “Bond Villain” behind the scenes pulling the strings, and I would have liked a main villain that could really be a physical threat for our hero, but perhaps that is why they cast Yen and Adkins in their roles.

    The Supporting Cast

The ‘Matrix’ reunion is cut short again as Laurence Fishburne does return as the Bowery King but has limited screen time. However, it is always nice to see Fishburne and Reeves share the frame again, and his role is pivotal to Wick’s success. Actors Hiroyuki Sanada and Rina Sawayama are great additions to the franchise as Shimazu Koji and his daughter Akira, respectively, and it was fascinating to see the Osaka version of the Continental Hotel.

Tragically, actor Lance Reddick, who has played Charon, the concierge of the Continental Hotel in New York, in all four ‘Wick’ movies died this past week, just before the film’s release. Unfortunately, the actor’s role is limited in the new movie, but his performance now has new context as it will be one of his last. Reddick’s character was a staple of the series, always having great chemistry with McShane and Reeves, particularly in ‘Parabellum,’ and the actor will definitely be missed.

But in many ways it is Ian McShane’s Winston Scott who has the biggest upgrade in ‘Chapter 4.’ The character played an important but small role in the original, and that role has grown in each new installment. Winston’s power is threatened in this film, and like a scared animal backed into a corner, we learn what happens when you cross the character. It’s his plan that could help John regain his freedom, and in turn help himself return to power, but McShane allows the character to come across in a way that you feel he is motivated by his friendship and respect for Wick as much as he is by his own self-preservation. And again, his lovely moments with Reddick as Charon will take on more resonance now that the actor is gone.

(L to R) Lance Reddick as Charon and Ian McShane as Winston Scott in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’

Is ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ the last one, or will there be a ‘John Wick 5?’

Without giving anything away, there definitely is a finality to ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ or at least a satisfying conclusion to the main character’s story arc. Regardless of the movie’s outcome, rest assured that the franchise will not end here. While there are plans for a ‘John Wick: Chapter 5,’ director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves have both said recently that they plan to take a break from the character and the franchise for a while.

But no matter what happens with the flagship ‘Wick’ series, the franchise and especially ‘Chapter 4’ have created such a big world with so many interesting characters that it will go on for the foreseeable future. Already in production is ‘Ballerina,’ based on characters introduced in ‘Parabellum,’ including Unity Phelan’s Rooney (now played by Oscar nominee Ana de Armas) and Anjelica Huston’s “The Director.” The movie is helmed by ‘Underworld’s Len Wiseman and will also feature Reeves, McShane and Reddick, reprising their roles, and it is said to be set between ‘Parabellum’ and ‘Chapter 4.’

There has also been talk of a spinoff featuring Halle Berry’s ‘Parabellum’ character, and a possible crossover with Bob Odenkirk’s ‘Nobody’ series. Not to mention the upcoming series adaption called ‘The Continental,’ which is an origin story for the Winston Scott character, featuring Colin Woodell playing a young Winston, as well as Oscar winner Mel Gibson.

    Final Thoughts

In the end, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is an action-packed and emotional rollercoaster with fantastic new characters and a satisfying conclusion to the title character’s arc. Keanu Reeves reminds us why we love him playing his beloved signature character, and Donnie Yen dazzles creating a new character you’ll want to see again, while director Chad Stahelski delivers the best sequel in the series.

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ receives 9.5 out of 10 stars.

Lance Reddick, an actor who brought poise, gravitas and depth to even the smallest role, has died.

Best known for movies including the ‘John Wick’ series and TV shows including ‘The Wire’, ‘Fringe,’ and ‘Bosch,’ Reddick was 60.

    Who was Lance Reddick?

Born in 1962 in Baltimore, Reddick’s initial passion was for music; he attended the Peabody Preparatory Institute and completed a summer program on music theory and composition at the Walden School as a teenager. Yet acting calling to him: after earning his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, he relocated to Boston, Massachusetts in the 1980s to start attending the Yale School of Drama in 1991.

Reddick began his screen career in the mid-1990s, guesting on such series as ‘The Nanny’ and ‘New York Undercover’. Later in the decade, he appeared on the big screen in films including ‘Great Expectations’ and ‘The Siege’ before recurring on HBO’s Emmy-winning 2000 miniseries ‘The Corner’, which was based on David Simon’s book. The same year, he scored a role on fellow gritty HBO drama ‘Oz’.

But all that was prologue to the first of his most notable TV roles –– Simon cast him in ‘The Wire’ as Cedric Daniels, an iconic character who appeared throughout the show’s run. He also won fans for his work as Phillip Broyles in sci-fi drama ‘Fringe’.

More recently, he’s been back on the TV cop drama beat with ‘Bosch’. But his career has been incredibly varied, Reddick showing up on shows such as ‘The Blacklist’, ‘Castle’, ‘Intelligence’, ‘Castlevania’, ‘Corporate’, ‘The Legend of Vox Machina,’ and Netflix‘s ‘Resident Evil.’

Which movies has Lance Reddick been in?

Movie-wise, he’s enjoyed a long and successful career that takes in a wide variety of films including ‘White House Down’, ‘Little Woods’, ‘Angel has Fallen’ and ‘One Night in Miami…’ But perhaps he’s become best known as Charon, the stoic, badass concierge of the Continental hotel in the ‘John Wick’ movies.

Reddick has a few films left in which audiences can enjoy his work: he’s in the remake of ‘White Men Can’t Jump’, due out this year, ‘Saint Sebastian’, ‘The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial’ (which is still in production), and ‘Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’, which stars Ana de Armas. He’s also playing Zeus in the new Disney+ adaptation of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’, which should be out next year.

Most recently out promoting ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, which is in theaters next week, the actor was found dead of natural causes at his home in Studio City. Reddick is survived by his wife, Stephanie Reddick, and children, Yvonne Nicole Reddick and Christopher Reddick.

  • Norman Reedus joins ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off ‘Ballerina’

Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon in AMC's 'The Walking Dead.'
Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’

Unlike the usually frenetic pace of the ‘John Wick’ movies themselves, the pace of information about casting for the in-production movie spin-off film ‘Ballerina’ has been more of a slow, consistent drip feed.

And the latest word on the ensemble is that ‘The Walking Dead’ mainstay Norman Reedus is now aboard.

“We’re huge fans of Norman, and we’re confident that the fans will be just as excited as we are that he’s joining the ‘Wick’ universe,” producer Erica Lee. “He’ll make an incredible addition to ‘Ballerina.’ ”

Nothing is known yet about exactly what role Reedus will be filling, but the movie stars ‘No Time to Die’ and ‘Knives Out’ actor Ana de Armas as the title character.

Len Wiseman, better known for the likes of the ‘Underworld’ franchise and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, is in the director’s chair for the movie, which has a script from ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten.

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which does feel apt for something set in John Wick’s world.

Ian McShane in 'John Wick: Chapter 2'
Ian McShane in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’

So far, the movie’s cast has started to feel like a reunion for ‘Wick’ performers, as several veterans of the main film series are confirmed to be showing up. Ian McShane, for example, will be back as Winston, the manager of the Continental hotel, part of the chain of luxury facilities which offers accommodation and assistance to assassins such as John Wick.

Lance Reddick is once more playing Charon, the concierge of the main Continental in New York, while Anjelica Huston will show up as the Director, the head of the Ruska Roma crime organization who raised Wick and trains young women like the Ballerina.

More recently, ‘Maria Full of Grace’s Catalina Sandino Moreno has also boarded the movie, though like Reedus, she’s a new character in the story.

And talking of John Wick, the Keanu Reeves character who kicked (and punched and shot) it all off, is reportedly making a cameo in the new film.

Many of the ‘Wick’ regulars will also show up in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, which is much further along. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to chalk up a release date, while ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is headed our way on March 24th next year.

As for Reedus, he recently wrapped up a 12-year run on ‘The Walking Dead’, the zombie-crammed survival series that became a massive pop cultural sensation. He hasn’t left that world completely behind, though, as he’s filming a spin-off series focused on his character, Daryl Dixon.

Movie-wise, he’s part of the cast for Jeff Nichols’ new movie, ‘The Bikeriders’, which also features Tom Hardy, Austin Butler and Michael Shannon. That one has been shooting since October but doesn’t yet have a release date on the books.

  • Movie Review: ‘Violent Night’

Leah Brady, and David Harbour in 'Violent Night.'

Punching into theaters on December 2nd, ‘Violent Night’ represents the sort of Christmas movie that is certainly not festive fun for the whole family. But for those whose tastes run more towards the more brutally entertaining likes of ‘Atomic Blonde’ or ‘Bullet Train’, it’s got some fun lurking in Santa’s sack.

Father Christmas in this case is played by ‘Stranger ThingsDavid Harbour as a grizzled, jaded sort introduced drowning his sorrows at a pub in England between “shifts” delivering presents to the ungrateful spawn of the world. A Nordic warrior who has been handing out presents for more than 1100 years now, he’s seen it all.

And as the world has moved on from more traditional Christmases towards cash gifts, Amazon deliveries and video games, he’s become increasingly disillusioned, ranting about kids who “want, crave and consume”. The movie’s cynically playful tone is set early on when the barkeep, concerned that the sozzled Santa has headed to the roof, is overjoyed to discover him flying away on the traditional reindeer-pulled sleigh, only to be drenched in vomit by the overindulging Claus.

So what can help Santa regain the joy and belief in himself if fewer and fewer are believing in him? Tommy Wirkola’s new film, written by ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ script duo Pat Casey and Josh Miller, posits that what he needs is a ferocious encounter with thieves who are looking to rob a wealthy family.

Stephanie Sy, John Leguizamo, and André Eriksen in 'Violent Night,' directed by Tommy Wirkola.
(L to R) Stephanie Sy, John Leguizamo, and André Eriksen in ‘Violent Night,’ directed by Tommy Wirkola. © Universal Studios.

Led by John Leguizamo’s Scrooge – his code name – this bunch of Naughty List-dwelling robbers have finagled their way into the swanky, well-defended Lightstone compound posing as caterers and entertainers. Before long, the squabbling brood overseen by Beverly D’Angelo’s Gertrude Lightstone (who is much more a female Logan Roy from ‘Succession’ than ‘National Lampoon’s sweet Ellen Griswold) are being held at gunpoint while the gang look to raid their vault.

Of course, Santa shows up to deliver gifts (and sample some expensive whiskey) and has to help save these largely irredeemable types from the even nastier threat that has invaded their home. His real motivation, though, is young Trudy Lightstone (Leah Brady), a sweet-natured girl who just wants her parents Jason (Alex Hassell) and Linda (Alexis Louder) to reconcile.

It’s a set up that promises plenty of opportunities, but the movie tends to squander them with first-draft family dynamics and mugging from some of the cast (though others, such as ‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Edi Patterson grab the chance to be despicable and run with it).

When the saccharine stuff eventually creeps in, it’s largely manageable and not too sickly, largely balanced by the violence that has been perpetrated before.

Director Tommy Wirkola and David Harbour on the set of 'Violent Night.'
(L to R) Director Tommy Wirkola and David Harbour on the set of ‘Violent Night.’ © Universal Studios.

While the story can’t quite hold everything together, the set-pieces have much more value. Which is perhaps not surprising given both director Wirkola’s past movies such as ‘Dead Snow’ and ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ and the team from 87North.

Spawned from the stunt training facility co-founded by David Leitch (who produces here) and Chad Stahelski after their days working on the original ‘Matrix’ trilogy, it has since become one of the go-to destinations for actors looking to whip themselves into fighting shape. And to design memorable action moments for both the founders and other filmmakers.

Here, the focus is on inventive ways to off nameless (or codenamed) goons with different takes on Christmas staples or other items. So Harbour’s Santa battles armed thieves with a stocking full of pool balls, festive decorations and, in one particularly stabby/slashy moment, an ice skate.

And there is the most inventive, splashy use of Santa’s chimney transport trick to murder someone that we’ve seen in the cinema. Which shouldn’t be surprising, as Santas outside of the odd horror movie don’t generally go on killing sprees.

Alexis Louder, and David Harbour in 'Violent Night.' © Universal Studios.
(L to R) Alexis Louder, and David Harbour in ‘Violent Night.’ © Universal Studios.

Harbour absolutely commits to the role of a Santa Claus who used to spend his days smashing heads with a hammer, and despite being tired from years of Christmas duty, still relishes the chance to punish the naughty with more than just coal. Cue lots of spins on Christmas song lyrics turned into catchphrases.

‘Violent Night’ also tips its hat early on to its big influences – ‘Die Hard’, obviously, with Harbour’s character having more than a little John McClane about him – world-weary protagonist dropped into a tough situation who often has to stitch himself up. And then there’s Trudy trying out some ‘Home Alone’ booby traps against the baddies with less cartoony results than Kevin McCallister ever dreamed of.

Forced to do a lot of the heavy lifting, the fight scenes don’t always balance out the fact that the plot is thin and the characters less than stimulating. The baddies are mostly just stock criminals waiting for Santa to kill them off. There are times when it all feels like a video game as Harbour ploughs through the different level of challenges, which is somehow fitting given the writers’ ‘Sonic’ experience.

Yet even Leguizamo, bringing a welcome cocktail of rage and humor to the main villain, can’t quite make it all hang together, leaving the story to droop like an old Christmas tree.

Mitra Suri and John Leguizamo in 'Violent Night,' directed by Tommy Wirkola.
(L to R) Mitra Suri and John Leguizamo in ‘Violent Night,’ directed by Tommy Wirkola. © Universal Studios.

Plus the twists and turns are entirely predictable, leaving Santa as the main reason to keep watching. Wirkola has some fun with the situation, and the needle drops feature some more eclectic choices alongside the standards, it’s just disappointing that the movie doesn’t do more with what it has.

Yet like a slightly overdone gingerbread cookie, it still has its pleasures, mostly whenever Harbour is on screen. Or when a nativity scene is utilized to take out some villains in a way that would probably give the Pope a conniption fit.

It could certainly benefit from a little more of the Christmas magic that Santa keeps talking about, but ‘Violent Night’ is worth unwrapping at the cinema if you ever wondered what ‘John Wick’ at Yule would look like.

‘Violent Night receives 3.5 out of 5 stars.

The news continues to arrive about ‘John Wick’ spin-off movie ‘Ballerina’, which has ‘No Time to Die’s Ana de Armas starring. And from the sounds of it, it’ll be even more closely connected to the ‘Wick’ world than we thought.

Lionsgate has announced that Anjelica Huston, who debuted as crime lord The Director in ‘John Wick: Chapter Three – Parabellum’, will also show up in ‘Ballerina.’

This makes sense, since The Director, who is the head of the Ruska Roma crime organization, is seen in that third movie training up young female ballerinas with some very harsh techniques. And she also oversees the training of male orphans as assassins.

It’s to the Director that Keanu Reeves’ embattled hit man comes to for help, though her assistance costs her when the High Table – controllers of crime in the ‘Wick’ world – decide to punish her giving some who is excommunicado by stabbing her in the hands. No one says they’re not literal when it comes to rough justice.

“The idea of ‘Ballerina’ was formed around the scenes with Anjelica in ‘John Wick 3’, says producer Erica Lee. “Anjelica Huston is an icon and is nothing less than Hollywood royalty. The world of Wick is always made richer by her commanding screen presence.”

Len Wiseman, better known for the likes of the ‘Underworld’ franchise and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, is in the director’s chair for the movie, which has a script from ‘Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten.

Lionsgate also previously announced that Ian McShane, who has played Winston, the complicated manager of the Continental Hotel seen in the movies, will be back to reprise the role.

News leaked earlier this month that the key figure in the entire franchise – that would be Keanu Reeves himself – will also show up in the spin-off.

There is, of course, no information about what Wick might be doing in the movie (besides kicking, punching and shooting people, we can only assume), or how big his involvement will be beyond a potential cameo, since this is really intended to focus on de Armas’ character.

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which does feel apt for something set in John Wick’s world.

“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’, says producer Basil Iwanyk. “He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.”

Reeves and McShane will both also be back for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, which put a trailer out recently.

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ lands in theaters on March 24th next year. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to confirm a release date.

The ‘John Wick’ universe just continues to expand, with a fourth main movie headed our way in a few months (and giving out cryptic social media clues about… something – probably a trailer) and ‘The Continental’ TV series making its way through post-production after shooting this year.

Attention is now turning to ‘Ballerina’, the movie spin-off of the ‘Wick’ films, which stars Ana de Armas.

Len Wiseman, better known for the likes of the ‘Underworld’ franchise and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, is in the director’s chair for the movie, which has a script from ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten.

Lionsgate has announced that Ian McShane, who has played Winston, the complicated manager of the Continental Hotel seen in the movies, will be back to reprise the role.

Collider, meanwhile, has learned that the key figure in the entire franchise – that would be Keanu Reeves, who plays John Wick himself – will also show up in the spin-off.

So… yes, very much a ‘John Wick’ story.

“We’re thrilled to have Ian McShane joining us for a pivotal role in ‘Ballerina’, says producer Basil Iwanyk. “He’s been such an integral part of the franchise since the original John Wick. It’s been fun to have him on this journey as the Wick universe expands.”

There is no statement about Reeves – but then, his presence is probably something the producers were trying to keep quiet a little longer. And the studio has yet to reveal who else is in the cast, but with cameras now rolling, expect more details soon.

‘The Continental’, which focuses on a younger iteration of Winston, is also due on screens in 2023 via Peacock. That show features Mel Gibson, Colin Woodell, Nhung Kate and Katie McGrath in its ensemble.

The fourth ‘Wick’ movie, meanwhile, finds Reeves in familiar territory. “John Wick takes on his most lethal adversaries yet in the upcoming fourth installment of the series,” reads the official logline for the next movie. “With the price on his head ever increasing, Wick takes his fight against the High Table global as he seeks out the most powerful players in the underworld, from New York to Paris to Osaka to Berlin.”

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ lands in theaters on March 24th next year. ‘Ballerina’ has yet to confirm a release date.

  • Keanu Reeves Starring in ‘The Devil in the White City’

Keanu Reeves speaks onstage at Comic-Con at San Diego Convention Center

Keanu Reeves is officially confirmed as the star of Hulu’s adaptation of Erik Larson’s novel ‘The Devil in the White City’, which has Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese as executive producers.

Little Children’s Todd Field is directing, while ‘Castle Rock’ veteran Sam Shaw will serve as writer, showrunner and exec producer.

Larson’s scrupulously researched and endlessly compelling tome covers a true story but does it in thrilling novelistic style.

It chronicles two men: Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to mark his mark on the world, and serial killer Dr H. H. Holmes, who might not have gained the infamy of Jack the Ripper but is alleged to have killed a slew of people around the time of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago.

Reeves had been originally linked with the latest adaptation back in January when word arrived that he was in talks to star. The Hollywood Reporter has it that Reeves will be playing Burnham.

That said, there is something definitely compelling about the idea of Reeves as a serial killer. It would be a real shift from his usual roles (though you could argue that John Wick has killed way more people than Holmes, even if it was out of necessity and his targets are all bad people as opposed to innocent victims).

Keanu Reeves as John Wick in 'John Wick: Chapter 4.'
Keanu Reeves as John Wick in ‘John Wick: Chapter 4.’

This is a project with a lengthy development history. Back in 2002, Leonardo DiCaprio learned of the book’s existence. He then discovered that Tom Cruise had already bought the movie rights and was working on an adaptation with the help of Kathryn Bigelow and her ‘K-19: The Widowmaker’ writer Christopher Kyle.

Not to be outdone, DiCaprio dug up all the public domain information he could about the case and started to put the pieces together for his own movie, looking to beat Cruise to theaters.

Yet years in limbo for both movies ended with little forward movement, and the rights eventually ended up back on the open market in 2010. Seeing his chance, DiCaprio snapped them up, intending to star in (as Holmes) and produce the project with his Appian Way business partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran. In a statement, they called the book “truly a one-of-its-kind American story about our nation’s first serial killer. We’re excited to bring it to the big screen.”

With the rights in hand, DiCaprio and his team set about working up their new version. And, in a move that should surprise exactly no one, DiCaprio planned to reunite with regular collaborator Martin Scorsese. Warner Bros. was quick to grab the package given that combo, and then had Graham Moore write at least one draft of the script.

Yet it didn’t quite gel, and then Paramount won the rights in a 2015 bidding war, sealing a new deal with DiCaprio and co, while Billy Ray wrote the latest version of the script.

Still, even that level of talent attachment is no guarantee of a greenlight and the movie version sat in limbo for a few more years. Cut to 2019, and the Hulu deal was announced, DiCaprio and Scorsese staying aboard, but only as executive producers.

This marks Reeves’ biggest TV role to date, but there’s no word yet on whether DiCaprio will be joining him on screen (his continued big screen work with Scorsese makes that unlikely). It’s just good to see some actual forward movement for this one, a killer concept if ever there was one.

  • Halle Berry Hints at ‘John Wick’ Spin-Off

Halle Berry in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’
Halle Berry in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’

Halle Berry’s Sofia was one of the definite highlights of ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’, an old friend and tough ally for Keanu Reeves’ titular character who was there in his moment of need.

It shouldn’t be all that shocking then, to learn that there could be a spin-off movie featuring Berry’s character.

Out on the promotional trail for Roland Emmerich’s new disaster epic ‘Moonfall’, Berry let slip to IGN that there’s a chance. “There could possibly be a Sofia… her own movie,” Berry tells the site. “So, she might not be in ‘John Wick’, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”

There’s certainly plenty more to learn about Sofia Al-Azwar, the manager of the Continental Hotel in Casablanca, who aids Wick when he’s declared excommunicado, cut off from access to assassin’s guild resources and with a price on his head.

Fortunately, not only can Sofia handle herself, but she also has two very well trained Belgian Malinois dogs. Who, let’s just say, have a bite worse than their bark…?

And the ‘John Wick’ team has certainly shown a willingness to expand the concept beyond the initial three movies (with the fourth on the way next year). ‘The Continental’, a limited series due on Starz later this year, which chronicles the younger days of hotel manager Winston Scott (Ian McShane in the movies). Starring Colin Woodell as the more youthful Scott, the series also features Mel Gibson, Peter Greene, and Jeremy Bobb.

Ian McShane in 'John Wick: Chapter 2'
Ian McShane in ‘John Wick: Chapter 2’

Then there’s movie spin-off ‘Ballerina’, which has ‘No Time To Die’s Ana de Armas in talks to star as the character glimpsed briefly (and there played by Unity Phelan) in ‘Parabellum’. Len Wiseman is directing and ‘Parabellum’ co-writer Shay Hatten wrote the script for the movie, which tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Very in keeping with ‘John Wick’, then.

But before you get too excited about the idea, this is no more than Berry dropping a hint, with nothing official on the books yet.

And we’ve been down the Halle Berry spin-off road before. When 2002 Bond movie ‘Die Another Day’ was in production, Berry’s Giacinta ‘Jinx’ Johnson led to talk of a potential follow-up, with a solo adventure planned detailing how she joined the National Security Agency.

Unfortunately, apparent lack of interest from production studio MGM scuppered the idea. Her following it up with ‘Catwoman’ in 2004 didn’t really help, and the Bond franchise effectively rebooted in 2006 with ‘Casino Royale’. Berry describes the idea of the Sofia spin-off as “putting some ointment on a little sore,” referring to her disappointment over the cancellation of a Jinx film.

‘Moonfall’ is in theaters on Friday. ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is scheduled for release on March 24, 2023.
