In theaters on Friday, April 26th, ‘Boy Kills World’ is a revenge thriller that choose to layer dark, madcap humor over its clear ‘John Wick’ influence. Powered by a solid, committed central performance from Bill Skarsgård and some entertaining quirk from elsewhere in the cast, it does somewhat fall victim to a thin storyline that gives it much more of a style over substance feel and sometimes comes across as a video game rather than a movie.

Still, with some interesting permutations later in the plot, it does prove to have a little more going on under the surface.

Does ‘Boy Kills World’ punch above its weight?

If you only watch one movie this year where Bill Skarsgård goes on a violent rampage intent on wiping out the people who did him wrong… well, we’ve yet to see ‘The Crow’, so we can’t tell you whether ‘Boy Kills World’ is the better of the two.

But it certainly has a level of originality to put it above a new adaptation of a graphic novel that was first brought to screens in 1994. That said, what we have here is very much a blend of ‘John Wick’, ‘The Hunger Games’ with just a dash of a twisted take on ‘The Karate Kid’.

    Script and Direction

Sharlto Copley in 'Boy Kills World'.

Tyler Burton Smith wrote the script here, working with Arend Remmbers to adapt the short film that the latter created alongside director Moritz Mohr.

While Skarsgård’s performance is mute, the screenplay for the movie is nevertheless full of entertaining voice-over from H. Jon Benjamin (‘Bob’s Burgers’), who provides an insight into what’s going through his character’s head. Whether it’s quoting from the dictionary that the younger version of Boy studies or commenting on what’s going on, it’s a real highlight of the movie as a whole –– all credit to the team for hiring someone who knows what they’re doing on the voice-over front.

Yet for the most part, the movie is reliant on its fight scenes, and they are certainly numerous, even if they eventually start to make you a little numb. Even with the invention on display here, the sheer brutality of every clash is to such a level that you start to feel battered by it yourself. Still, as the credit implies, it’s fight designer/director and coordinator Dawid Szatarski who deserves the lion’s share of the credit here.

But Mohr, who expands his original concept here, certainly has a lot of flare to spare when it comes to camera moves and performances. It’s clear he and his team were working to a tighter budget than the likes of either ‘Wick’ or ‘Hunger Games’, but he gets a lot out of it.

    Performances

Michelle Dockery in 'Boy Kills World'.
Michelle Dockery in ‘Boy Kills World’. Photo: Lionsgate.

Appearing in almost every scene (aside from early story moments when the younger version of his character is on screen, played by twins Nicholas and Cameron Crovetti), Skarsgård brings his typical intensity to the role, and very clearly threw himself into training (he’s essentially carved from stone here) to pull off the various fights.

And his “Boy” is more than simply a savage, revenge-happy warrior –– he’s a damaged personality who has suffered years of trauma and has a mission on his mind (even if it’s not the mission he thinks it is). In tandem with Benjamin’s quirky delivery, it combines to make for a watchable lead role.

As his Guru, Yayan Ruhian channels the film’s anarchic style, bringing a deranged Mr. Miyagi energy to the screens, the world’s most dangerous mentor. He doesn’t have a lot to do besides show off his considerable martial arts skills (you’ll have seen him in the ‘Raid’ movies and the third ‘John Wick’ outing), but he does the job well.

On the villainous side of things, we have an assembled group who are clearly having a blast playing atrocious, dystopian autocrats, a collection of paranoid ramblers and scheming social climbers.

Michelle Dockery in 'Boy Kills World'.

Famke Janssen does a lot with relatively little as the power-obsessed Hilda Van Der Koy, one part Hitler, one part Margaret Thatcher. Around her are the likes of Brett Gelman (superbly sleazy as the script-happy brother-in-law Glen), while Sharlto Copley leans into his ability to make smarmy assholes likeable. Well, sort of. But even when he’s at his worst, he’s utterly entertaining.

Michelle Dockery, meanwhile, is creepy on a whole other level as Hilda’s sister Melanie, the real power behind the throne.

And then there’s June 27, played by Jessica Rothe. The star of the ‘Happy Death Day’ movies is just as committed as the rest, and proves she’s got the action chops as much as Skarsgård. Plus, she delivers when called upon to show other sides to her character.

    Final Thoughts

Jessica Rothe in 'Boy Kills World'.

‘Boy Kills World’ is certainly frenetic and action-packed, with a healthy line in dark, zany comedy and some clever ideas.

But in a world where movies such as ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’, ‘John Wick’ and other exist, it doesn’t seem as completely original as it might, and it frequently mistakes punching for plot. Don’t let that stop you from checking out something that could use the support, though.

‘Boy Kills World’ receives 6 out of 10 stars.

What’s the story of ‘‘Boy Kills World’?

The new movie stars Bill Skarsgård as a young man known only as “Boy”, who vows revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Famke Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty that left the boy orphaned, deaf and voiceless.

Driven by his inner voice, one which he co-opted from his favorite childhood video game, Boy trains with a mysterious shaman (Yayan Ruhian) to become an instrument of death and is set loose on the eve of the annual culling of dissidents. Bedlam ensues as Boy commits bloody martial arts mayhem, inciting a wrath of carnage and blood-letting.

As he tries to get his bearings in this delirious realm, Boy soon falls in with a desperate resistance group, all the while bickering with the apparent ghost of his rebellious little sister.

Who is in the cast of ‘Boy Kills World’?

    • Bill Skarsgård as Boy
    • H. Jon Benjamin as Boy’s “inner voice”
    • Jessica Rothe as June 27
    • Michelle Dockery as Melanie van der Koy
    • Brett Gelman as Gideon van der Koy
    • Isaiah Mustafa as Benny
    • Andrew Koji as Basho

    • Lionsgate brought the likes of ‘The Crow’ and ‘Borderlands’ to CinemaCon.
    • Stars including Henry Cavill and Halle Berry promoted their new movies.
    • The studio revealed several movies that have yet to lock down release dates.

Following a somewhat subdued and honestly lacking 2023 presentation, Lionsgate has a much more packed release schedule this year.

With movies such as the new take on ‘The Crow’, video game adaptation ‘Borderlands’ and an actual update on ‘John Wick’ spin-off ‘Ballerina’ –– there is plenty for the company to drum up excitement for.

But before talking about the movies coming in 2024, there was a chance to tease even further in the future, with confirmation of ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton adapting the ‘Naruto’ manga and anime, the third ‘Now You See Me’ in development with Ruben Fleischer directing and, even more intriguingly, Jason Blum’s Blumhouse working on a new ‘Blair Witch Project’ and Margot Robbie intending to make a ‘Monopoly’ movie with her LuckyChap company.

Now, on to the imminent offerings…

The upcoming release of Guy Ritchie’s World War II based-on-truth spy action thriller gave the company the chance to also tease his early 2025 release, which we now know is called ‘In The Grey’ and features criminals who work in a gray area of the world, somewhere between right and wrong.

Henry Cavill was brought out on stage to promote ‘Ministry’ and ‘In The Grey’, which he’s also appearing in. ‘In The Grey’ will see him once more appearing alongside ‘Ministry’s Eiza Gonzalez, with the addition of Jake Gyllenhaal and Rosamund Pike. It’s a heist thriller that looks slick and fun.

And because he’s Mr. Lionsgate right now, Cavill also talked up the ‘Highlander’ reboot movie series that has Chad Stahelski in the director’s chair.

According to Cavill, the new movies will dig much deeper into the lore of the characters and the world in ways the previous films did not. “I’m a lover of the original movies, for better or for worse, and it’s one of those things where when I was reading the script for the first time I wasn’t quite too sure where they were going to go with it.”

He also teases that, “If you thought you’ve seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything.” Showoff!

‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ opens next week on April 19th, ‘In The Grey’ will be in theaters on January 17, 2025. The ‘Highlander’ movie has yet to score a date.

The presentation then moved on to a quick look at…

    The Strangers: Chapter 1

Director Renny Harlin's 'The Strangers: Chapter 1.'
Director Renny Harlin’s ‘The Strangers: Chapter 1.’ Photo: Lionsgate Films.

The reboot of the horror franchise comes from Renny Harlin and kicks off a fresh trilogy.

This first new movie follows what happens when a couple driving cross-country to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest sees their car break down and is forced to spend the night in a secluded rental, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.

A trailer was shown, but you can see the previously released version below.

‘The Strangers: Chapter 1’ will be in theaters on May 17th.

Onwards to what the studio is no doubt hoping will be one of its heavy hitters in an era where video game adaptations are ruling the genre roost…

    Borderlands

Borderlands’ adapts the popular sci-fi game series, and the movie boasts a cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, Haley Bennett, Kevin Hart and (the voice of) Jack Black.

The cast and director Eli Roth submitted videos to the presentation, talking up the tone of the film (the extended version of the trailer continues the feel of Roth aiming for a ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’-style romp). He cites ‘The Fifth Element’, ‘Aliens’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and more as inspiration.

‘Borderlands’ is in theaters on August 9th.

With that complete, it was on to the other big hitter…

    The Crow

    Bill Skarsgård in 'The Crow.'

The presentation for the supernatural thriller remake begins with a lot of talk about how the new movie draws more from James O’Barr’s graphic novel source material more closely than the 1994 adaptation.

With Rupert Sanders directing this one, the cast includes Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and Danny Huston in the story of a couple who are murdered when the woman’s past catches up to her, only for the guy to be brought back to mystical life to take violent revenge on the criminals responsible.

The new trailer for the movie played to the room, which vastly improved on the first. It’s a lot grittier and more violent and spends a little more time building up the relationship between Skarsgård and Twigs and then being told, “The Crow will guide you to put the wrong things right. Kill them. Kill them all…”

We watch our hero getting into impressive scraps and needing to rebuild his body after a nasty encounter with traffic. Could this turn around word on the new movie?

‘The Crow’ flies into theaters on August 23rd.

    Next!

    Never Let Go

Halle Berry took the stage to talk up horror movie ‘Never Let Go’ from director Alexandre Aja, who also made ‘Crawl’ and 2006’s ‘The Hills Have Eyes’.

It’s the story of a family who have been haunted by an evil presence for years –– or at least, that’s what their mother claims –– begins to question the truth of their situation. Berry talked about how she’s an adrenaline junkie who grew up loving ‘The Shining’ and looked to be part of a story she’s never seen before.

And she also mentioned going Full Method to play an overprotective mother who lives with her kids in a cabin in the woods –– including learning to skin a squirrel.

‘Never Let Go’ is out on September 27th.

    Next, a surprise entry…

    The Killer’s Game

The movie features Dave Bautista as an assassin who falls for Sofia Boutella and looks to start a family. But then alas! He’s diagnosed with a fatal disease, so to help those around him avoid the pain of a long illness, he takes out a contract on his own life… until he learns he was misdiagnosed and learns that the contract is still valid –– and a lot of his former colleagues (including an enthusiastic killer played by old ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ pal Pom Klementieff) are still looking to collect.

Day Shift’s’ J.J. Perry is behind this one, and it looks fun, but it has yet to confirm a release date.

    bDGAW2juQSFlTfeikJ2916

Now, to one people might have something to say about…

    ‘Flight Risk’

A thriller directed by Mel Gibson and starring Mark Wahlberg? Yeah, surely that won’t be controversial.

Still, the film, which features Wahlberg as a scenery-chewing mob hitman who takes over piloting a charter flight transporting a prisoner (Topher Grace) to New York to stand trial had a footage reel. The biggest thing to draw attention appeared to be Wahlberg’s accent and hair…

‘Flight Risk’ is still being edited, so it has yet to announce a release slot.

    Moving swiftly to…

    ‘Good Fortune’

Another less reported movie, this one directed by Aziz Ansari, in which he also stars alongside Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.

It’s the story of Ansari’s struggling Los Angeles-based assistant, who is visited by a “budget guardian angel” (how could Reeves be a budget anything?), who helps him find meaning and value in his life. And how is that accomplished? A body-swap twist with Rogen’s wealthier sort, so both can see how the other half lives.

When you have Ansari behind your movie, you naturally have him come out on stage to be funny, and so he does, poking fun at Henry Cavill and how theater owners (the primary crowd here) frequent strip clubs in Vegas.

He also tells a story about Keanu Reeves –– a man who has survived ‘Matrix’ and ‘John Wick’ movies ending up on crutches while shooting this film… by tripping on a rug on his way back to his trailer. He kept on working, shooting everything bar one dance sequence, for which Ansari, in a moment of genuine gratitude, described him as an actual angel.

‘Good Fortune’ is another movie without a release date in place.

And talking of Keanu Reeves and ‘John Wick’…

    Ballerina

The ‘Wick’ spin-off starring Ana de Armas as an assassin has been the subject of much speculation, most pointedly because it has been delayed more than once.

After little to talk about on this one last year, the company had more to say on this one, including extra details on how the release delays allowed director Len Wiseman to go in an add extra action scenes.

The first trailer for the film screened which, to no-one’s surprise, includes Reeves’ appearance as John Wick in the movie. And, also less than surprising, it factors in the High Table, the Continental, and some key cast from the franchise. From the looks of it, Reeves’ Wick will be training de Armas’ character.

‘Ballerina’ will land in theaters on June 6th next year.

    One more for luck?

    Michael

It’s still in production, so director Antoine Fuqua couldn’t make it to Vegas, but Lionsgate still wanted to make sure we all know the Michael Jackson biopic is on the way next year. Producer Graham King (who has no little experience with musical movies about big stars after ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’) was on hand to offer a first look. Behind-the-scenes buzz-builder ahoy!

King revealed that the movie will feature more than 30 songs from Jackson’s oeuvre, and that it’ll dig into various aspects of his life in music and beyond. How far it’ll probe still remains to be seen, but King seemed confident in the filmmakers’ approach.

‘Michael’ is due to arrive on April 18th next year.

Things are changing on the ‘John Wick’ spin-off front. While ‘Ballerina’, the Ana de Armas-starring new movie, had been scheduled for June 7th, will now move back a year.

But before you start worrying that the High Table has somehow found a way to hobble the main character, fear not: it’s for a good reason.

What is happening with the ‘Ballerina’ movie?

    Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves

According to Deadline, the change is happening so the ‘Ballerina’ team can add in some extra action scenes.

Chad Stahelski, who has directed ever ‘Wick’ movie since the first, has been promoted to oversee the wider franchise for Lionsgate, and is now going to help director Len Wiseman with boosting the action quotient of the new movie. Which makes sense, since the ‘Wick’ films are always full of stunts and set-pieces.

    What’s the story of ‘Ballerina’?

Anjelica Huston as "The Director" in 'John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.'
Anjelica Huston as “The Director” in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.’ Photo: Lionsgate.

‘Ballerina’ will follow the Ballerina character, played by de Armas, glimpsed briefly (and there brought to life Unity Phelan) in ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ and tracks a young assassin who seeks revenge against the people who killed her family. Which feels fitting for a ‘Wick’ movie.

Wiseman, who has worked on the likes of ‘Underworld’ and ‘Live Free or Die Hard’, directed the new movie, based on a script by Shay Hatten (who wrote ‘Chapter Three’).

The cast for the new movie also includes Norman Reedus, Anjelica Huston, Catalina Sandino Moreno, and Gabriel Byrne, plus ‘Wick’ stalwarts Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane and the late Lance Reddick (since the majority of the movie was shot back in 2022).

When will ‘Ballerina’ be in theaters?

The action movie is now targeting a June 6th, 2025 release slot. Which might be a smart move, since it plants a flag on a date that is currently empty of competitors.

What is moving into ‘Ballerina’s old release slot?

If you’re wondering what you can watch instead of ‘Ballerina’, Lionsgate has a plan for that. The studio is moving the new version of ‘The Crow’ to the June 7th date this year.

Directed by Rupert Sanders, the new adaptation of the James O’Barr graphic novel stars Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven, who is brutally murdered alongside his soulmate Shelly Webster (FKA twigs) when the demons of her dark past catch up with them.

    VUhnt7q2qXPBFbAt2H8vg5

Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The movie also stars Danny Huston, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila, and Jordan Bolger. But it’ll be under plenty of pressure, since the 1994 original is considered a cult classic. And the new movie will be up against Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (daughter of M. Night) horror pic ‘The Watchers’ on that June date.

    • Bob Odenkirk’s back action for ‘Normal’.
    • ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ director Ben Wheatley will make the movie.
    • ‘Nobody’ veteran Derek Kolstad wrote the script.

Though we’re more used to seeing Bob Odenkirk use his quick wits than his fists as Jimmy McGill in ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’, he proved he was more than up to the task of getting into clashes with 2021 action movie ‘Nobody’.

That film, directed by Ilya Naishuller and written by ‘John Wick’ veteran Derek Kolstad, saw Odenkirk as a an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, who when his house is robbed, reveals his past as a government agent and all-round badass who takes on some dangerous Russian thugs.

Though they’ve talked about a sequel to that movie, Odenkirk and Kolstad have now reunited instead for a new action concept called ‘Normal’, which has British filmmaker Ben Wheatley attached to direct.

The new movie follows Ulysses (Odenkirk), who is thrust into the temporary role of the sheriff for the small sleepy town Normal after the previous officer’s untimely death.

When the town’s bank is robbed by an out-of-town couple, Ulysses arrives on the scene to find that the town is hiding much more sinister deep-seated secrets under its surface and everyone –– from the bartender to the priest –– is in on it.

And now Ulysses, who’s up until now focused only on running away from the demons of his past, must uncover the full extent of this criminal conspiracy.

Marc Provissiero, who worked with Odenkirk and Kolstad on ‘Nobody’, is aboard to produce ‘Normal’ alongside them.

WME Independent is representing the movie, and the distribution rights will be on sale at this month’s European Film Market, which kicks off next week. We doubt it’ll be long before someone snaps this up –– might Universal, which saw ‘Nobody’ earn nearly $60 million from a $16 million budget, take a chance?

What has Ben Wheatley worked on before?

    2016's 'Free Fire.'
    2016’s ‘Free Fire.’ Photo: StudioCanal.

US audiences might know Wheatley best from his most recent movie, the Jason Statham-starring giant shark sequel ‘Meg 2: The Trench’, but he’s been something of a genre-hopper.

He got his start in low-budget, high-bloodshed horror movies in the UK, including ‘Down Terrace’ and ‘Kill List’ and has made his way through different styles of films such as social satire ‘High Rise’ and a new adaptation of the Daphne Du Maurier novel ‘Rebecca’, famously previously brought to screens by Alfred Hitchcock.

He proved he can make action movies interesting via 2016’s ‘Free Fire’, which pitched two rival criminal gangs against each other in a shoot-out and a game of survival.

When will ‘Normal’ be in theaters?

Since it has yet to start shooting or find a distributor, there is no scheduled release date for ‘Normal’ just yet.

The idea of rebooting 1986’s ‘Highlander’ is not a new one. It has been bubbling away on Hollywood’s development burner for a few years now, going through the usual litany of directors, writers and potential cast on its difficult journey to screens.

Along the way, the likes of Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan among those attached to direct, while Ryan Reynolds, Dave Bautista and more have been eyed to play different roles.

These days, the re-imagined take on the movie is in the hands of ‘John Wick’ veteran Chad Stahelski, who has Henry Cavill aboard to play the lead. And talking to the Happy. Sad. Confused. Podcast, Stahelski has been outlining some of his thinking for the film.

Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod in 1986's 'Highlander.'
Christopher Lambert as Connor MacLeod in 1986’s ‘Highlander.’ Photo: 20th Century Fox.

The 1988 original revolves around Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a Scottish Highlander born in the 16th Century who is somehow immortal. He has survived through the centuries, and learns from Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (Sean Connery), that he is part of a race of many who can only die when beheaded. The power of the slain immortal is absorbed into the victor, and they are all competing for “The Prize” –– enough power to rule Earth forever. Connor’s biggest threat is the Kurgan (Clancy Brown), a murderous brute of an immortal who wants that power for himself and Connor must face him at an event known as The Gathering.

“There can,” as the tagline famously reads, “be only one.”

Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the first film is considered a cult classic, dividing audiences into those who love it and those who think it’s so bad it’s great. The movie is famous for its sword fights and its Queen-composed soundtrack.

It spawned several sequels and even a spin-off TV series.

Here’s what Stahelski had to say:

“‘Highlander,’ I’ll tell you, if we get our shit together and pull off a feature, we have ideas for days about the coolest characters and how to make that an epic TV show. I just think that’s a rich, rich mythology. Our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that. But we’ve also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we’re trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property.”

Yet he adds that he’ll have to be careful:

“The trick is when you have the tagline ‘there can only be one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time.”

While he loves the original, he’s not above pointing out its flaws…

“There’s not a lot that happens in the second act, It’s mostly about bitchin’ flashbacks with Sean Connery mugging the camera. You watch the movie, and it has no business being good or cool or interesting, but for whatever reason — the fisheye lenses, weird sword fights, fucked up dialogue, and the Queen soundtrack make it one of the funnest movies you’ll ever watch.”

There has been little progress of late on the movie, primarily because of the combined writers and actors’ strike. But once smarter decisions have been made by the studios and the matter is resolved, Stahelski and Cavill will be ready to dive back into that world.

  • New Trailer for ‘The Continental’

Despite the seemingly finality of the end of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’, studio Lionsgate would dearly like to mine more from the successful franchise.

For now, though, it’ll have to settle for the cinematic spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (starring Ana de Armas and due in theaters on June 7th next year) and three-part “event” TV series ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’, which has a new trailer online.

What’s the story of ‘The Continental’?

The show aims to explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the ‘John Wick’ universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott (played in the movies by Ian McShane and here as a younger man by Colin Woodell), as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind.

Winston charts a deadly course through the hotel’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the hotel where he will eventually take his future throne.

And from the looks of this, we know his family will be in lethal danger from Mel Gibson’s criminal kingpin.

Star Woodell said this to Empire about the narrative and how his Winston is different from McShane’s:

“It’s a story of revenge and making amends for what I think is taken from my character, and that’s my love and my family. I love Ian’s embellishment of the character, and how delicious everything is. To some degree we begin to get there at the end of ‘The Continental’ and you understand what motivates him, but I didn’t get to really participate in that deliciousness.”

Here’s what director Albert Hughes (who made the first and third installments) had to say about the limited series:

“Everyone loves escapism in cinema. As a filmmaker I wanted to honor the spirit of escapism and excitement from the film series while introducing new fans to a hyper-stylized world they’ve never seen before. Together, executive producer/writer Kirk Ward and I had several goals –– to explore the backstories of familiar ‘Wick’ characters, introduce new and exciting ones, dig deeper into the rules and mythology while expanding the physical scope of The Continental, showing fans areas of the iconic hotel they’ve never seen before. Kirk and I had the time of our lives creating this impressionistic spin on New York in the 70s. Even the soundtrack became a character in itself and reflects all that is American culture; a tapestry of distinct identities and experiences pieced together to create something truly unique.”

Where and when can I see ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’?

The series launches its first part on Peacock on Friday, September 22nd, with the next following on Friday, September 29th and the final chunk streaming on Friday, October 6th.

  • ‘John Wick 4’ Almost Had a More Obvious Final Scene

    Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves
(L-R) Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves attend the Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation in support of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ at the Colosseum Theatre in Caesar’s Palace on April 28th, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Photo by Eric Charbonneau.

Before we get into the meat of this story, a quick yet vital SPOILER WARNING if you have somehow not yet seen ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’.

Still with us? Don’t try to make us excommunicado because we somehow broke a rule –– you were warned.

    f9HakKt6vPZWClZUV638w3

    John Wick is dead.

At least, that’s what the end of ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ would have you believe. After defeating Bill Skarsgård’s Marquis and beating the High Table for good, it appears Keanu Reeves’ seemingly indestructible assassin has taken one bullet too many, and –– no! –– dies at Paris’ Sacré-Coeur while the sun rises, dreaming of his late loving wife Helen, before being buried in the plot next to her.

But could that have been a plot by our hero to fake his death? According to Chad Stahelski, there was originally a plan to point to Wick’s survival more clearly, but that test audiences didn’t buy that.

    Stahelski on the scene

Here’s what director Stahelski told Empire Magazine about the scene:

“We had a different ending. [The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending. We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So, it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.”

The End. Or is it? The movie does feature Wick getting buried, but a returning main character (and actor) is certainly something that studio Lionsgate would like to see, since according to its CEO, a fifth film is in development, and it has more Wick in the works than your average candle factory.

Stahelski, though, won’t be drawn on specifics of whether there will be more ‘Wick’. He and Reeves mostly knew they weren’t satisfied with how the third movie had left things.

Here’s Stahelski’s statement on coming up with ‘Chapter 4’s finale:

“We didn’t feel like we had done our best. We both felt like we could have ended the series better. We didn’t feel like we stuck the landing, and that’s a shitty feeling. Because we love the character, we love working together, we love the world. I said, ‘I’d be pissed if that’s how they ended the whole series. I’d be pissed at the director,’ And I had just read this treatise on samurai etiquette called Hagakure, the art of the way of dying. And we’re like, ‘Yeah, he’s got to die. And we got to come up with the coolest way to make the happen. We’ve got to make it all about, ‘you can only have a good death if you had a good life’.’ That’s the first line we wrote on a napkin in Japan, three years out. We wrote the movie backwards off that one thing.”

So, while there are currently no official plans for more main ‘Wick’ movies from the creative team, ‘Chapter 4’ has been successful enough that you can all but guarantee that something will arrive to go along with big-screen spin-off ‘Ballerina’ (starring Anna de Armas) and TV prequel ‘The Continental’.

  • Oliver Stone Criticizes ‘John Wick’ Movies and More

There aren’t many people who would want to go toe to toe with Keanu Reeves’ assassin character from the ‘John Wick’ franchise. But director Oliver Stone sounds like he’s spoiling for a fight –– or a war of words, at least.

Speaking to Variety at the Transilvania International Film Festival where he was picking up a lifetime achievement award, Stone was unflinching in his criticism of the action movies where Reeves cuts a swathe through various enemies.

    Stone on ‘John Wick’

Here’s what Stone had to say about the ‘Wick movies:

“I saw ‘John Wick 4’ on the plane. Talk about volume. I think the film is disgusting beyond belief. Disgusting. I don’t know what people are thinking. Maybe I was watching ‘G.I. Joe’ when I was a kid. But Keanu Reeves kills, what, three, four hundred people in the f*****g movie. And as a combat veteran, I gotta tell you, not one of them is believable. I realize it’s a movie, but it’s become a video game more than a movie.”

It might sound surprising coming from the director of violent movies such as ‘Natural Born Killers’, ‘Platoon’ and the writer of 1983’s ‘Scarface’, but then much of his filmography has been about the horrors of such actions.

Stone was also vocal when it came to his feelings about modern movies’ style:

“How many cars can crash? How many stunts can you do? What’s the difference between ‘Fast and Furious’ and some other film? It’s just one thing after another. Whether it’s a super-human Marvel character or just a human being like John Wick, it doesn’t make any difference. It’s not believable.”

He’s also angry about the way movies are made these days:

“When they make movies now, they want to think about how do we market it, who’s going to watch it? Of course, that’s a consideration. But it becomes the sole consideration. You really have to have a bigger and bigger hit, which ruins the business because it makes the margins bigger, and of course that makes the cost of the film bigger.”

    Going nuclear

In his own career, Stone hasn’t enjoyed as much success as his 1980s and 1990s heyday, with his dramatic movies failing to connect with audiences and struggles to get documentaries made as he’s increasingly seen as a contrarian.

Most recently, Stone had to fight to make a documentary called ‘Nuclear Now’ about how nuclear power has been unfairly vilified (despite the likes of events such as Hiroshima and Chernobyl).

Here’s what he said about the frustrations of the new documentary:

“It was rejected. It was rejected at birth. No financing. No company wanted to do it. No Netflix. It’s crazy. People in showbiz are idiots. They just go with the trend; they just go with the fashion — it’s a fashion business.”

John Wick is back and it is even more action-packed than ever. Can he ever earn his freedom and finally be released from the grasp of the High Table?

Following the events of 2019’s ‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is seeking out the new head of the High Table, Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård). With a hefty price on his head and hundreds of assassins go after Wick, including his old friend Caine – a blind assassin – Wick is in for the biggest and longest battle yet.

The official synopsis for ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ is below:

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ opened to $73.8 million domestically, making it the highest opening grossing movie in the ‘John Wick’ franchise’. It is certified Tomatoe-meter fresh with a 91% score from critics, 93% from the audience, and 95% from Moviefone. The fourth installment has grossed $180 million domestically and $406 million worldwide since its release.

The Most Intense Fight Scenes Of The Franchise

The ‘John Wick’ franchise has come a long way since the 2014 film where the former assassin was seeking revenge from those who murdered his beagle puppy, a gift from his late wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan). The film is known for its intricate “Gun-fu” fight choreography, carefully crafted by director and stuntman Chad Stahleski and his stunt team.

Working with stunt coordinators Scott Rogers and Stephen Dunlevy, who have over 30 years of experience in the industry, they created some of the most stunning fight sequences of the franchise including one involving a weapon named “Dragon’s Breath”. This scene takes place later on in the film and gives the audience a top-down view of the fight, something that has not been done yet in the franchise.

The cameras had to be rigged on wires over the set in order to shoot it from the top-down. The walls of the set had to be built shorter in order for the camera rig to be set up correctly for the scene. And the “Dragon’s Breath” weapon? It was a modified shotgun that shot fireballs. Each time it fired, it would ignite the victims on fire in a flurry of flames and sparks. Paired with the heart-thumping music, making this scene quite the spectacle.

Another intense – and long – fight scene was the one that took place at the iconic Rue Foyatier. It is a 222-step staircase that leads to the Sacré-Coeur. Wick has a time limit to reach the top of the stairs, and it wasn’t just the endless staircase that stood in his way. Countless assassins show up at the Rue Foyatier to try to claim the hefty bounty that’s been placed on the Baba Yaga. Just when Wick finally sees the top of the stairs, he receives a kick that sends it all the way back to the bottom. For the safety of the actor, Reeves’ stunt double Vincent Bouillon made the fall.

Finally, there’s the incredible John Wick verses cars sequence at the Arc de Troimphe. Filled with busy traffic of Paris, Wick is dodging endless cars and Garmont’s goons while taking a few hits himself. This scene was accomplished with group of 50 stunt drivers from all over the world, two camera crews, and countless hours of rehearsal.

What worked (mostly) for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Marvel’ can work for everything, right? That appears to be the lesson that the producers of ‘John Wick’ have taken from Disney’s hunger to expand all of their storytelling universes outside of the movie sphere, with linked TV series on Disney+.

Which means that the ‘Wick’ world is ever-growing, with a movie spin-off (‘Ballerina’, starring Ana de Armas) due next year, and before it, a TV prequel that aims to dig into the predictably violent history of the Continental hotel that forms a key part of the stories in each movie.

It doesn’t hurt, of course, that the most recent main entry, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ has scored a healthy $270 million worldwide since it landed near the end of March.

    What is ‘The Continental’ about?

According to the official blurb, the new “TV event” (think three 90-minute episodes, a little like the way the BBC’s ‘Sherlock’ used to run) will explore the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins, which has long become the centerpiece of the ‘John Wick’ universe.

This will be accomplished through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, who is dragged into the Hellscape of a 1975 New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind. Winston charts a deadly course through the New York’s mysterious underworld in a harrowing attempt to seize the iconic hotel, which serves as the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.

Ambulance’s Colin Woodell plays the younger Winston (the character brought to life in the movies by Ian McShane) while Ayomide Adegun is Charon (the future concierge of the hotel, where he’s played by the late, great Lance Reddick).

At this point in the story, the Concierge is someone played by Sallay Garnett. And possibly the biggest –– and most controversial –– piece of casting is Mel Gibson, who plays a character called Cormac. He doesn’t appear in the trailer, so it’s impossible to say how he fits into the story.

What we do know is that the show is bursting with 1970s style and the usual brunch of quirky assassins.

The cast for this one also includes Nhung Kate, Adam Shapiro, Katie McGrath, Jeremy Bobb, Ray McKinnon and Peter Greene, who appears to be playing the younger version of cleaner-for-hire Charlie.

Given the time period, we doubt Wick himself will make an appearance, unless there’s a sneaky shot of an orphaned child or teenager being shown how to use a gun.
