  • Jennifer Garner Back as Elektra for ‘Deadpool 3’

The multiverse may not reap as many dividends at the box office these days (unless it’s surrounding Spider-Man, apparently), but that isn’t stopping the third ‘Deadpool’ movie from going full meta with the concept.

Deadpool 3’, which features the return of Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth, Wade Wilson already boasts the character heading into the MCU and meeting up with a version of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

But from the sounds of it, the film –– which has Shawn Levy directing in his latest collaboration with the actor –– will feature a whole host of other Marvel characters.

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, we can add another confirmed person to the list, as Jennifer Garner is back to play the character of Elektra.

    Who is Elektra?

Elektra Natchios, introduced into the pages of Marvel comics by writer Frank Miller in ‘Daredevil #168’ in 1980, has been a constant presence in Daredevil’s life, and frequently a love interest. The daughter of a wealthy Greek entrepreneur, she’s trained from a young age as an assassin and boasts a wide range of abilities, including lethal skills with Sai knives.

In the movies, Garner played her opposite Ben Affleck’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the 2003 movie ‘Daredevil,’ but despite that not launching its own franchise, she would return as the character in ‘Elektra’ in 2005, which suffered a similar fate at the box office.

How Elektra will show up in ‘Deadpool 3’ remains to be seen, but we’d put money on it being a cameo and one that likely came about thanks to Garner’s work with Levy and Reynolds on Netflix film ‘The Adam Project’. It’ll certainly be fun to see her back in action.

Who is back from the other ‘Deadpool’ movies?

Returning from either one or both of the established two Deadpool movies are Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus and Rob Delaney as Peter.

New this time are Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen as unknown characters.

Besides the confirmed characters, there are also those who are rumored to be back in action. The internet has been abuzz that Affleck will return as Daredevil, while Chris Evans has also been rumored to be returning to Marvel as a character he’s played in the past. No, not Captain America (even if Evans is most famous as him these days), but Johnny Storm/Human Torch from ‘Fantastic Four.’

The latter is more intriguing (if true) given Marvel’s aim to launch a new version of ‘Fantastic Four’ within the MCU. Clearly Kevin Feige is giving Reynolds and Levy plenty of leeway.

‘Deadpool 3’ is currently scheduled to quip his way into theaters on May 3rd, 2024.

With the cameras now reportedly rolling on the third ‘Deadpool’, director Shawn Levy has been busy gathering the cast he needs to surround Ryan Reynolds’ titular Merc With A Mouth, who also goes by the name Wade Wilson.

Some are new recruits –– ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin, for example is reportedly playing one of the movie’s main villains, while ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen is also aboard in an unknown capacity (we could see him being a Weasley character of some sort, though he might want to do something different after years of Tom Wambsgams).

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

And the headliner, of course, is Hugh Jackman, who after two films (and years of a fake rivalry with his good friend Reynolds) is bringing Wolverine to both the ‘Deadpool’ franchise and the MCU (since the new movie will be overseen by producer Kevin Feige and counted as part of the sprawling superhero universe for the first time).

But then there are the returning characters who have appeared in previous ‘Deadpool’ movies –– and the latest to be announced are Brianna Hildebrand and Shioli Kutsuna, per Deadline.

Hildebrand has played sullen, sarcastic teen X-Men hero Negasonic Teenage Warhead (who has the ability to generate nuclear explosions) since the original, while Kutsuna joined in the second as her girlfriend, the cheery Japanese mutant ninja Yukio.

Who is else is back for the movie?

Alongside Hildebrand and Kutsuna, many of the movies’ veteran characters are coming back. Morena Baccarin, who plays the main character’s great love, Vanessa, will return (thanks to some convenient time-travel shenanigans that retconned her character’s death at the start of the second movie). Karan Soni is once again playing humble, nervous taxi driver Dopinder, while Leslie Uggams will be the sardonic Blind Al, Wade’s roommate. And we’ll also see more from stoic, metallic X-Men member Colossus, brought to life via performance capture and CGI by Stefan Kapicic.

Those have all been with the franchise since the original. Joining from ‘Deadpool 2’ is Peter (Rob Delaney) the unassuming human who stumbled into Wade’s auditions for his X-Force team and somehow ended up joining the group. Though Peter ended up dying like (most of) the rest of the ill-fated squad, Wade also used time travel to save him at the end of the movie.

What will ‘Deadpool 3’ be about?

So far, director Shawn Levy, who collaborated with regular writers Reynolds, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese and new recruit Zeb Wells, has not said explicitly what the storyline will be.

Yet we know from comments that Jackman in particular has made, that we can expect Wolverine and Deadpool to butt heads (probably literally at several points), and there will of course be knowing nudges at Wade’s new superhero reality –– we’d be shocked if there aren’t at least cameos from one or two MCU characters.

‘Deadpool 3’ is currently targeting a November 8th, 2024, release date.

In other news, Ridley Scott is rounding out the cast for his long-anticipated sequel ‘Gladiator 2’ –– but he’s been required to make a change as he does.

While ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ Oscar nominee Barry Keoghan had been in the midst of making a deal to play the antagonist, Emperor Geta, he’s had to drop out due to a schedule clash. But according to Deadline’s story on the matter, Scott has quickly found a replacement –– Fred Hechinger, seen in the first season of ‘The White Lotus’, will play the character instead.

Fred Hechinger on HBO’s ‘The White Lotus.’

Hechinger’s casting is just the latest piece of news on the film, and he’s part of an eclectic group of fresh additions to the movie.

Also new this time? ‘Moon Knight’ breakout May Calamawy, who was picked after an extensive audition process and is apparently a key character in the movie.

Besides her, Lior Raz, Peter Mensah (no stranger to gladiators after appearing on Starz series ‘Spartacus’ as Doctore) and Matt Lucas are all playing new characters. Plus, Derek Jacobi, who played Senator Gracchus in the original movie, will be reprising the role in the sequel.

Who is already in the cast?

‘Gladiator 2’s ensemble already boasts a compelling mix of established names and rising stars, with Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen aboard.

Nielsen, of course is another returning veteran of the originally, and she’ll be reprising the role of Lucilla, mother to Lucius, played as a boy by Spencer Treat Clark in the original and now by ‘Aftersun’s Paul Mescal.

And there has been chatter that Djimon Hounsou, Juba from the original, will be back for this one.

    CJVuNFCKxFBq4IsG555O72

How does the sequel continue the story of ‘Gladiator’?

You’ll recall that the 2000 original saw Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general betrayed by the scheming Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who killed his father the emperor and seized power.

While Maximus isn’t likely to show up –– short of CG-enhanced flashbacks since the character died in the original and went to a lush heavenly zone to reunite with his slaughtered family –– the story for the new movie, written by David Scarpa, sets the clock forward by several years.

In addition to being Lucilla’s son, he was the nephew of Commodus. Maximus saved Lucius and Lucilla while avenging his own family and left a strong impression on the young boy.

Quite what Lucius is up to in the new film remains to be seen, but there’s a chance he’ll be ending up in the arena himself, especially since Mescal has reportedly been training for the role.

Knowing Scott’s current prolific output, there’s every chance he’ll be hopping on to a different film as soon as ‘Gladiator 2’ is in good shape. He already has ‘Napoleon’ (a reunion with Phoenix) due in theaters on November 22nd this year.

‘Gladiator 2’, meanwhile, has earmarked the same date –– November 22nd but for next year.

  • ‘Dotty and Soul’ Interview: Leslie Uggams

    hkTva4y0

Premiering on digital and On Demand May 19th is the new comedy ‘Dotty and Soul’ which was written and directed by actor Adam Saunders (‘Family Weekend’).

What is the plot of ‘Dotty and Soul?’

‘Dotty and Soul’ revolves around hot shot entrepreneur Ethan Cox (Adam Saunders), who appears poised to sell his self-driving car company and make his investors filthy rich. But when his problematic Halloween costume gets tweeted, the ensuing social media firestorm nearly ends Ethan’s career. Desperate to figure out a way forward, Ethan hatches a plan: he will hire a 71 year old snack cart vendor, Dotty (Leslie Uggams), to pose as his company’s figurehead, with Ethan still managing from behind the wings. But when Dotty decides to no longer play the straw man, and starts expressing opinions of her own – everything changes.

Who is in the cast of ‘Dotty and Soul?’

‘Dotty and Soul’ stars Leslie Uggams (‘Deadpool’) as Dotty, Adam Saunders (‘Shimmer Lake’) as Ethan Cox, Margot Bingham (‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’) as Isabella, M. Emmet Walsh (‘Blade Runner’) as Harold Eichelbaum, David Koechner (‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’) as Brannigan, Gary Owen (‘Ride Along’) as Diggy, and Alexis Ren (‘The Enforcer’) as Stefani.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with legendary actress and singer Leslie Uggams about her work on ‘Dotty and Soul,’ her character, Dotty’s relationship with Ethan, working with writer, director and actor Adam Saunders, the message of the movie, and preparing to reprise her role as Blind Al opposite Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in ‘Deadpool 3.’

Leslie Uggams in 'Dotty and Soul.'

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Uggams, Adam Saunders and David Koechner.

Moviefone: To begin with, Dotty is quite the hustler in her own right. Can you talk about your approach to playing the character?

Leslie Uggams: I loved the script as soon as I read the script. I loved Dotty. I think people think that people get a certain age and therefore they don’t have many thoughts. She’s in her little world, but she knows how to navigate. Then she meets this wacky guy and he awakes the giant in her and he thinks, “Oh, I’ll be able to manipulate her.” Then all of a sudden he loses control. But he realizes, “Oh my goodness, I think I did the right thing because she’s really smart,” and you never know where your path is going to take you. She gets an opportunity and she gets to have a wonderful relationship with him, and they learn from each other.

MF: Ethan is a hustler too, and he seems to meet his match in Dotty. Can you talk about their relationship and the true friendship and respect that begins to form between the two of them?

LU: Well, the thing is, the hustler is trying to out hustle another hustler, but she manages to one up him each time. Through this, he begins to realize, “Oh my God, maybe I can learn something from this woman.” Plus all of a sudden she realizes, “Wait a minute, I got an opportunity here. Let me go with this. Let me work it.” She has some brilliant ideas and they form this wonderful relationship. But also she teaches him, “Stop trying so hard. Stop trying to be somebody you’re not, because you are really bright. Look what you’ve accomplished. What is all that stuff that you’re wearing?” Stuff like that. She gets him to come down to earth and he helps her finally fulfill the dreams that she wanted. It took many years, but it’s never too late.

(L to R) Adam Saunders and Leslie Uggams in ‘Dotty and Soul.’

MF: What was it like for you working with Adam Saunders, not only as an actor, but also as a writer and director?

LU: We had a great time. We did a lot of improvisation, a lot of times. But we were in tune with each other. From the time I met Adam, we clicked. So being on the set, if an idea came that was better, a line that was better, we went for it. It was a happy set, and everybody, even when we weren’t shooting, we were laughing. That’s a great way to work.

MF: The movie deals with some very serious subject matter, but is also a comedy and is very funny. What was it like for you to have an opportunity to be in a film that is very entertaining but also has an important message at the heart of it?

LU: Well, it’s interesting because when we started filming the movie, we were kind of ahead of what was really happening. Then we got shut down because of the pandemic and we didn’t go back to it till a year later. All of a sudden, the world had caught up to what we were talking about in the movie. We realized that there was a scene that Adam wrote after we came back that was necessary that wasn’t in it originally, but with what happened to (George) Floyd and all these things, we had to address some of the seriousness that was going on in the world. We talked about it, and it turned out to be a wonderful moment. It’s not funny. So therefore, there were certain things that we had to address and it was wonderful. It has a message that talks about those kind of things. So even though it’s a comedy, life happens and we don’t go around laughing every day, especially nowadays. So therefore, it was wonderful to have this teaching moment, that’s what I call it.

MF: Are you excited to reprise your role as Blind Al in ‘Deadpool 3’ opposite Ryan Reynolds and with Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine?

LU: Well, I’m married to an Aussie (Grahame Pratt), so I’m used to those Aussies. I’m not nervous about anything. Of course I just love Ryan, and so I’m excited. I’m really excited about it and Blind Al, she cracks me up. She’s funny.

MF: Finally, do you have any fun memories of working with Jim Henson and the Muppets on ‘The Muppet Show’ in 1979?

LU: I loved it. Oh, it was so much fun doing that show. I thought they were real people. I don’t care what you say.

Looks like ‘Deadpool 3’ is getting more of the gang back together. Following word that Karan Soni is back as taxi driver/Deadpool friend Dopinder and Leslie Uggams is returning to play his elderly roommate Blind Al comes news that two other veterans of the first two films will show up for the third.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

Deadline reports that Morena Baccarin, who plays Vanessa, an escort who falls in love with Deadpool‘s Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) prior to the disfiguring science experiment that turns him into the immortal superhero, and later becomes his fiancée, will now appear despite previous comments (see below).

She’s joined by Stefan Kapicic whose performance is enhanced with CGI to turn him into the stoic, powerful X-Men member Colossus, a frequent target of Deadpool’s mockery, but a reliable ally.

(L to R) Morena Baccarin and Charlie Hunnam in 'Last Looks'
(L to R) Morena Baccarin and Charlie Hunnam in ‘Last Looks’

What had Morena Baccarin said about her return previously?

Baccarin returning to the fold is the one of interest here, since the actor appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast ‘Inside of You’ last week and expressed concern that her deal was not yet closed.

    Here’s what she said:

“Yeah, what is up with ‘Deadpool 3?’ That’s a really good question. I have to be very diplomatic about what I say here. I’d like to be in it. They have called me about being in it. Right now, we have not agreed on terms, and everybody’s trying their best, and doing their best. But it may or may not work out. I don’t know. I do think that this movie, since the acquirement of this Deadpool universe by Marvel/Disney, that merger that happened, I do feel like they’re trying to reinvent it a little bit. I think this movie is going to be much more about Wolverine and Deadpool.”

Whether or not her comments had any impact on her return will likely remain behind closed doors, but a least she’ll be back –– and hopefully not just killed for plot reasons as in the second movie.

    Who is making ‘Deadpool 3’?

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and then regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

Director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie, which will see Hugh Jackman show up properly as Logan/Wolverine after many, many jokes at his expense.

Emma Corrin of ‘The Crown’ is also aboard as an unknown villain, with ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen also aboard. And while Deadline’s report originally mentioned that Brianna Hildebrand would be back as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, it has since corrected that to say her return is not certain.

  • Movie Review: ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’

Justice Smith plays Simon, Chris Pine plays Edgin, Sophia Lillis plays Doric and Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga in 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' from Paramount Pictures and eOne.
(L to R) Justice Smith plays Simon, Chris Pine plays Edgin, Sophia Lillis plays Doric and Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ from Paramount Pictures and eOne.

Releasing in theaters on March 31st, ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ blends the knowing humor that writer/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein brought to ‘Game Night’ with an adventure worthy of the name.

They’re helped by a charming cast that have solid chemistry, a witty script that channels everything from ‘Lord of the Rings’ to ‘Monty Python’ and an enchanting visual style that is bursting with impressive effects work.

If you’re a longtime player of the game, chances are you’ll have a good time spotting the various references and easter eggs sprinkled within the film, but if you don’t know your Paladin from your Cleric, you don’t need to swot up to understand the story.

    7ERMr3hgn8bDgTWarLubW2

What happens in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’?

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ takes as its basis the tabletop gaming system invented in 1974 by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and currently overseen by the company known as Wizards of the Coast. It’s the sort of elemental fantasy world that has been copycatted many, many times. And yet, it still feels original here.

We’re introduced to Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine), a charming bard-turned-thief and his best friend, barbarian Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez), who are cooling their heels in prison after being caught on a job trying to steal magical artefacts.

Betrayed by Forge Fitzwilliam (Hugh Grant) and dark magic acolyte Sofina (Daisy Head), the pair must make good their escape and recruit a band of unlikely adventurers (including Justice Smith’s lackluster wizard Simon Aumar and Sophia Lillis’ shape-changing druid Doric to undertake an epic heist to retrieve a lost relic, but things go dangerously awry when they run afoul of the wrong people.

The stakes are high: the artifact that Edgin and his original associates retrieved has been used by Sofina and her group of evil red wizards to unleash an army of the undead and general chaos upon the fantasy world. Our heroes must make things right, assuming they can stop squabbling along the way…

Related Article: The New ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Movie is called ‘Honor Among Thieves’

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ is powered by fun performances

Making full use of the entertaining script written by writer/directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the cast make this latest stab at ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ work far beyond the ill-fated 2000 movie.

Pine, who has proven he can handle a blend of comedy, heart and action with movies such as the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, here makes for a typically appealing leading man while sending himself up at times. His Edgin is such a charming rogue, just this side of annoying but never smug.

Key to his character’s appeal is the fact that he’s not your basic action protagonist –– he’s heroic and can handle himself, but he’d much rather let Holga deal with any fighting. Rodriguez, usually found within the ‘Fast & Furious’ ensemble, gets more of a chance to have fun here, similarly undercutting the expectations of her character and proving to have a great buddy comedy connection with Pine. One of the smartest moves was to eschew a basic romantic storyline for these two, making the story feel like it isn’t the 500th variation of a well-used tale.

Her character is also the focus of a very enjoyable cameo from a big movie star that has yet to be widely reported, so we won’t spoil it here.

Grant mostly channels his smooth-talking Phoenix Buchanan from ‘Paddington 2’ to play Forge, but while he’s a low-level antagonist who only has a few key scenes, he steals most of them.

Smith and Lillis make for a great duo: he the nervy wizard struggling with self-esteem and his magical abilities, she the cagey druid who can become almost anything she wishes to be but would rather not hang out with humans. And while Pine and Rodriguez enjoy the lion’s share of the material, Grant, Smith and Lillis all have enough moments to keep their characters memorable.

Plus, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Regé-Jean Page’s Xenk Yendar, who the crew seeks out for help. A ramrod straight hero in the classic mold, he’s a blend of Drax from ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and Christopher Reeve‘s Superman. He doesn’t appear in a lot of the movie, but he certainly makes an impact.

The movie as a whole has been carefully calibrated to have as wide an appeal as possible, putting a truly entertaining spin on heroes, villains and even exposition –– the image of heroes getting information out of a series of resurrected corpses is one that will stick (and still make you laugh) for days afterwards.

Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga, Justice Smith plays Simon and Chris Pine plays Edgin in 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' from Paramount Pictures and eOne.
(L to R) Michelle Rodriguez plays Holga, Justice Smith plays Simon and Chris Pine plays Edgin in ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ from Paramount Pictures and eOne.

‘Dungeons & Dragons’ might not be for everyone

There are still elements of the movie that could turn people off: if you’re not a fan of the “Marvelization” of blockbusters putting jokes into adventure or action, this movie might not be the best entry point.

The jokes tend to be more on the chuckle level than giant belly laughs (though there are certainly a few of those here, including a moment featuring both the “dungeon” and “dragon” part of the title). And, yes, it is another movie where a group of quippy heroes have to go on a quest to find a magic thing to fix a situation wrought by a magical baddie. But it does some interesting things with that very basic concept.

At more than two hours, there are small moments that drag and odd sections that don’t support the running time expended on it, but those are few and far between. And if you came to the movie expecting to see plenty of Page’s character, he’s in a couple of scenes and then vanishes for most of the movie until the end. That’s not necessarily a problem, but he works so well with the rest of the ensemble and is so straightforwardly heroic that you might actually miss him when he leaves (in a straight line, jumping over a rock… it’s a thing).

Fantasy is a tricky genre to infuse with humor, but ‘Honor Among Thieves’ pulls it off with aplomb. In a world where even the shoddy 2000 movie can generate sequels, this one deserves to roll a saving throw and spawn a franchise, as, handled correctly, these are characters you’ll want to spend more time with.

‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ receives 9 out of 10 stars.

It marks the latest big gig for the actor, who has been one of the best things about ‘Succession’ in its run (and that’s saying something, given the powerhouse ensemble and top notch, spiky scripts). With the show now airing its final season, we can expect to see him picking up even more work, particularly since he scored an Emmy, a BAFTA and a host of other awards for his work on the series.

Yet ‘Deadpool 3’ is on a whole other level, calling back to a time when he was more regularly seen on the big screen. It already stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and will feature Hugh Jackman playing the target of Wilson’s most meta attention, Wolverine.

‘Deadpool 3:’ What do we know so far?

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and more recently, regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie.

It’s exciting for Marvel fans, as this movie will mark the first time Deadpool will be properly in the MCU, and studio boss Kevin Feige is involved as one of its producers.

While Leslie Uggams is on board to return as Wade Wilson’s roommate Blind Al, while ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin is co-starring in an unknown new role, one that will reportedly cause trouble for our heroes (when they’re not too busy causing trouble for each other).

MacFadyen’s addition just makes us anticipate it all the more. The actor is currently filming a new thriller called ‘Holland, Michigan’, which also stars Nicole Kidman and Gael García Bernal.

‘Succession’s fourth and final season is arriving weekly on HBO on Sundays. ‘Deadpool 3’, meanwhile, is scheduled to land in theaters on November 8th, 2024.

Deadpool 3’ remains one of the most anticipated superhero movies in the works –– and with the film speeding towards pre-production ahead of a planned shoot in London this year, the stars of the movie are talking about it, including main man Ryan Reynolds and, most recently, his friend and ‘X-Men’ icon Hugh Jackman, who will show up as Logan AKA Wolverine in the story.

Interviewed by Le Parisien about his latest film, Florian Zeller drama ‘The Son’, Jackman dropped a tantalizing hint about the new movie, nodding towards the chance of more than one version of Wolverine.

What did Hugh Jackman say about ‘Deadpool 3?’

“Yes, it will even be a dual role,” he said, which immediately sets the speculation machine into action, making us wonder whether he actually means a variant Wolverine (which wouldn’t surprise anyone given how many variant characters have cropped up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the last few years) or if he could actually be playing an entirely other character in the movie. Maybe even himself, to keep with the ‘Deadpool’ franchise’s history of meta references, particularly around Wolverine.

Jackman seems happy to be back at work with his buddy. This is what else he said about preparing for the film:

“Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer,” Jackman adds. “That’s why I’m so happy to be in Paris right now and to be able to enjoy French gastronomy. Because very soon, I’m going to have to put myself on a strict diet to remake my Wolverine body: steamed chicken and broccoli!”

  • Kevin Feige Talks Marvel’s Future Projects

Though we’re sure he’d prefer to keep everything under wraps until he’s fully ready to reveal them, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is sometimes called upon to sit down and discuss future plans for movies (and, increasingly, TV series) adapted from Marvel Comics into the sprawling, endlessly evolving chain of entertainment known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The release of a new movie, in this case ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, is one of the occasions where Feige meets the press. And he was typically enthusiastic about this latest outing and his team’s future ideas.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Big Bad: Why Jonathan Majors?

Asked about the reasons for casting Jonathan Majors in the latest ‘Ant-Man‘ adventure (which led to multiple roles across different projects, including last year’s ‘Loki’ Season 1), Feige was clear on the choice of the actor for the new main villain.

Feige says, “For years, we’ve always had the inkling that Kang would be an amazing follow-up to Thanos. He’s got that equal stature in the comics, but he’s a completely different villain. Mainly, that’s because he’s multiple villains. He/s so unique from Thanos, which we really liked. And in the early days of ‘Quantumania’ [test audiences], Jonathan started to pop in a big way. He’s the highest-testing villain we’ve ever had in any of our friends and families [screenings]. That’s really saying something with a movie like this. Even early on without the effects, Jonathan is his own effect. He was working from the start. It’s always one of the fun rolls of the dice that we do at Marvel, which is to say: ‘Hey, we’re going to make multiple movies around this character, and we’re going to start before the audience has even had a chance to meet him.’ We really go all in on these ideas and this casting. It was a big relief when the season ender of ‘Loki’ season 1 happened.”

    What is Spider-Man’s future?

While ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ seemed to wrap up the Tom Holland story, Feige also confirmed that there are more Spider-plans bubbling away at Marvel HQ. It’s early days, but here’s what he admitted,

“All I will say is that we have the story. We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

    Deadpool and Wolverine

Feige also talked up Hugh Jackman’s surprising return to the role of Wolverine for ‘Deadpool 3’, announced last year by the movie’s star, Ryan Reynolds.

The executive is clear on his joy at having Jackman back, especially given their connected history, since Feige worked on the ‘X-Men’ movies when 20th Century Fox had the rights.

Comments Feige, “It’s amazing. And we’ve got Hugh Jackman coming back for our first ‘Deadpool’ film within the MCU. That’s our first R-rated film. To have Hugh come back is incredible. For me, personally, that is where I started. I remember sitting behind the camera—well behind the camera—at his audition for the [first ‘X-Men’] film. It was his first on-set audition, and he flew up to Toronto to do a read with Anna Paquin. For him, and for me, and I think for all of the fans of Marvel, it’s unbelievable what has happened in those 23 years. It’s very full circle having him come back in this new ‘Deadpool’ film.”

Marvel Studios' 'The Marvels' opens in theaters on July 28, 2023.
Marvel Studios’ ‘The Marvels’ opens in theaters on July 28, 2023.

    What makes ‘The Marvels’ work?

One of Marvel’s exciting titles this year is ‘The Marvels’, the sequel to 2019’s ‘Captain Marvel’, which introduced Brie Larson’s powerful character Carol Danvers.

Directed by Nia DaCosta, the new film finds Carol interacting with Kamala Khan (AKA Ms. Marvel, introduced in her own eponymous Disney+ series last year) and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, the adult version of the character introduced as a child in ‘Captain Marvel’, but seen as an adult in ‘WandaVision’ when she also gained super powers.

Feige can’t wait for audiences to see the interactions between the three women.

He comments, “That’s what the entire movie is about. There are fun cosmic elements to it. Marvel comic fans will recognize elements of the Kree-Skrull war. And it’s picking up directly after the end of ‘Captain Marvel’, not in timeline but in story. We also do that in our upcoming Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’, and those are two very different follow-ups to that movie. Tonally, they couldn’t be more different. But there’s something immensely powerful about seeing Monica and Kamala and Carol together in a frame. To me, it’s only akin to the first ‘Avengers’ movie and seeing the six of them together in a frame. It’s chill-inducing. They’re so great together, and they all have different histories with one another.”

Where does Harrison Ford fit in to Captain America’s future?

Further down the production line is ‘Captain America: New World Order’, which will bring the new Captain America––AKA Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson––to theaters following his assuming the mantle properly in ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’. Mackie’s character will be interacting with a new President of the United States, embodied by an established character with a different face. That would be Thaddeus Ross, formerly played by the late William Hurt and now to be brought to screens by Harrison Ford.

Feige was effusive about the new casting choice…

“We start filming relatively soon. I’m sure anyone you’ve ever talked with about Harrison Ford says this, but it’s unbelievable that we get to meet and talk with him and that he’s embracing this role. He’s tireless with the amount of work that he does. This is certainly a big part for Thaddeus Ross. He’s the president of the United States in the film. And with Harrison, you think about ‘Air Force One’ and you think about some of his confrontations with the president in ‘Clear and Present Danger’, There’s a dynamic between President Ross and Sam Wilson. They have a history together, but in this film, we’ll be seeing the dynamic between Captain America and the president of the United States in a way that is just incredible.”

    What has become of Blade?

There was also good news for fans of Daywalking half-vampire/half-human her ‘Blade’, whose own movie hit some creative road bumps last year when original director Bassam Tariq walked away due to creative differences and script issues.

From the sounds of it, ‘Blade’, starring Mahershala Ali as the main character, is back on track, with Feige offering that it’ll start shooting within the next 10 weeks.

And finally, Feige dropped a hint that we might finally learn more about his company’s plans for ‘Fantastic Four’, with the famous characters finally aiming to enter the MCU in 2025 via a movie directed by ‘WandaVision’s Matt Shakman.

According to Feige, “’Fantastic Four’ is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics. There’s certainly been versions of it [on screen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that’s something that is really exciting for us. People will start to hear more about that soon. We plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward, just the way they’ve been in the comics for 50 or 60 years.”

Emma Corrin in Netflix’s ‘The Crown’ Season 4.

We’ve been told more than once that the most antagonistic combination in ‘Deadpool 3’ is likely to be Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson (AKA the titular Deadpool) and his longtime obsession, Logan/Wolverine, played in a surprise return by Hugh Jackman.

The real life pals’ online rivalry will spill out into the movie as Jackman has promised that Wolverine will be no fan of Deadpool. But it appears they will also find common ground facing off against a bigger threat.

Deadline reports that Emma Corrin, who broke out playing Princess Diana on Season 4 of Royal Family drama ‘The Crown’, is set to play a villain in the new movie.

Naturally, no one is saying anything about the character so far, which means the internet is already frothily speculating on who they might play––especially if Team Deadpool is considering a Marvel Comics character. Emma Frost? Whoever they end up as, Corrin will bring quality to the role––they have also been seen in the likes of ‘My Policeman’ and Netflix’s recent adaptation of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.

Reynolds welcomed the new addition in typically silly social media style…

In related Corrin news, they have also landed another role (one which necessitated the ‘Deadpool’ team figuring out schedules before they could commit).

Corrin will be part of the cast for ‘The Northman’ director Robert Eggers’ take on classic vampire tale ‘Nosferatu’.

The new movie is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Bill Skarsgård) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe are also aboard the fanged film, though we don’t yet know exactly what they or Corrin will be playing.

Nosferatu’ is inspired by F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror feature of the same name. It was given that title, which is derived from an archaic Romanian name for vampire, following a copyright spat with the estate of Bram Stoker, the Irish novelist who wrote ‘Dracula’ in 1897. Murnau’s vampire was renamed Count Orlok.

Eggers, who also wrote the script, is scheduled to start shooting next month in Europe.

One of the most surprising –– and for plenty of people, biggest –– news stories of the year was the surprising announcement from Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman that the latter’s Logan character (better known as Wolverine) would be returning to screens for the third ‘Deadpool’ movie.

The revelation, couched in a typically funny video from Reynolds, who tried to convince us all that he’d run out of ideas for another outing by Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth, set the internet alight.

Both Reynolds and Jackman have been asked about the idea since then, and with Jackman out and about promoting his latest starring role in Florian Zeller’s drama ‘The Son’, he’s been talking a little bit about what we can expect.

Though the two actors share a happy friendship (even if they’ve played it up as a huge rivalry in the past), it sounds like the relationship between the characters will be less than convivial.

“He’s annoyed by him,” he told the Empire Podcast. “Wolverine is frustrated by Deadpool and wants to be a million miles away from him or wants to punch him in the head. Unfortunately, he can’t be a million miles away from him in this movie, so I’m probably going to punch him in the head a lot.”

Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine in director James Mangold's 'Logan.'
Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine in director James Mangold’s ‘Logan.’

And while Jackman had long considered 2017’s excellent ‘Logan’ as the last time he’ll play the character on screen, he doesn’t consider the new appearance as breaking continuity, since it’ll take place in the timeline before the events of James Mangold’s movie.

But why come back at all? Obviously, Reynolds can be a persuasive person. And Jackman can point to when he decided to say yes. “It was August 14th, I remember driving, and it came to me like that, I just thought, this is going to be so much fun,” he adds on the podcast. “I’ll probably have more fun on that movie than anything I’ve ever done.”

And that includes a final potshot at his pal. “I want it to be better than ever, to be in better shape than ever, more able to do things than ever,” Jackman said. “I just get the added incentive of taking Ryan Reynolds out each day.”

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, Reynolds working alongside the likes of ‘Bobs Burgers’ veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin on initial script drafts before regular ‘Deadpool’ writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were brought back into crank out further revisions.

Little else is known about the movie at this point. While Marvel’s Kevin Feige and the Disney studio executives have been quick to stress that Deadpool will be allowed to be Deadpool without his sharper edges filed away, it remains to be seen what a Wade Wilson in the MCU looks and sounds like.

‘Deadpool 3’ is currently scheduled to punch its way into theaters on September 6th, 2024.
