    • ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ won the weekend’s box office again.
    • ‘Marty Supreme’ nabbed third place.
    • ‘Song Sung Blue’ and ‘Anaconda’ also debuted.

As we’ve learned before with ‘Avatar’ movies, it’s not necessarily the launch, it’s the hold. A key phrase among the films’ Na’vi characters is “I see you,” and audiences certainly came out to see the third entry, ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ with the title staying top of the box office for a second weekend.

Across the Christmas holiday weekend, James Cameron’s latest took in a solid $64 million over the traditional weekend and $88 million since the Christmas holiday on Thursday.

That three-day earning marks a 28% decline from its $89 million launch, a stronger hold than 2022’s ‘The Way of Water’ managed.

As mentioned above, the third entry is holding on well. So far, it has earned more than $217.7 million domestically and shows little sign of slowing down.

Worldwide, thanks to strong business in places such as China, the movie has now crossed $760 million, indicating that it should at the very least pass the $1 billion mark. Will it push past $2 billion like its predecessors? That’s trickier to predict.

Still, while some may deride the franchise for having little cultural impact, crowds certainly turn out for it.

What else happened at the box office this weekend?

There was also good news for star Timothée Chalamet and director Josh Safdie, as ‘Marty Supreme’, which expanded and enjoyed the best numbers among “newcomers” in third place with $17.4 million from 2,600 theaters over the weekend and $27.1 million through the four-day holiday frame.

Domestic ticket sales stand at $28.3 million after a weekend in limited release. The three-day figure marks the second-biggest opening weekend to date for A24.

Still, second was Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ which has been one of the year’s success stories. The animated sequel took in $20 million over the weekend and $25.2 million since Christmas Day. In total worldwide, it has now earned $1.42 billion.

Fourth was ‘The Housemaid’ with $15.4 million for the weekend, ahead of new arrival ‘Anaconda’ in sixth. The action comedy, which features Paul Rudd and Jack Black, made $14.6 million over the weekend and has taken $23.7 million since Christmas. The movie also opened internationally with $20 million for a global start of $43.7 million.

Also new to the charts was ‘Song Sung Blue,’ which stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson in the based-on-truth tale of Neil Diamond tribute musicians. That earned $7.6 million over the weekend in eighth place and $12 million through the four-day holiday frame.

In Theaters via Focus Features on December 25 is ‘Song Sung Blue’, which sounds like it should be a Neil Diamond biopic, but is in fact the adaptation of a documentary about a couple who covered his tracks while dealing with difficult moments in life.

Writer/director Craig Brewer‘s new movie stars Hugh Jackman (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’), Kate Hudson (‘Almost Famous’), Ella Anderson (‘Suncoast’), King Princess (‘Bottoms’), Jim Belushi (‘The Whole Truth’) and Fisher Stevens (‘Motherless Brooklyn’).

We have had such a glut of music biopics in recent years, unleashed by the success of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ that you might roll your eyes at the idea that ‘Song Sung Blue’ delves into some aspect of crooner Neil Diamond’s life.

Instead, writer/director/producer Craig Brewer has unearthed Greg Kohs’ underappreciated 2008 documentary about a real-life couple who formed a Diamond tribute act, chronicling the highs and lows in their own family.

    Script and Direction

Brewer certainly knows how to bring music to screens, and in ‘Dolemite Is My Name,’ he took an effective, funny look at a real-life person. With ‘Song Sung Blue,’ he combines those to largely winning effect, though it is sometimes hampered by what is invented (coincidence and convenience in the service of heartstring plucking) and suffers from what’s best described as ‘Return of the King’ syndrome –– multiple moments where there could be a natural ending, but the movie keeps going.

Still, Brewer has found a fantastic story here –– one that the trailer doesn’t fully address, and this is best enjoyed without knowing too much –– and draws superb performances from the whole cast, including Jackman and particularly Hudson.

While it might seem to be Jackson’s film as Mike Sardina initially, it evolves to become much more of a two-hander, Hudson enjoying her best role in years.

Around them, the supporting cast work well without slipping too often into expected beats (tough when it’s a true story on display).

‘Song Sung Blue’ should entertain even those who don’t know their Neil Diamond from their ‘Diamond Jim’, proving to be a welcome dose of real sentiment in an awards season that has been in need of it.

  • ‘Song Sung Blue’ Interview: Director Craig Brewer

Opening in theaters on December 25th is the new movie ‘Song Sung Blue’, which is based on the documentary of the same name and tells the true story of Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder.

Written and directed by Craig Brewer (‘Dolemite Is My Name’), the film stars Hugh Jackman (‘Deadpool & Wolverine’), Kate Hudson (‘Almost Famous’), Michael Imperioli (‘Goodfellas), and Jim Belushi (‘Thief’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with writer and director Craig Brewer about his work on ‘Song Sung Blue’, the documentary that inspired it, developing the screenplay, why Hugh Jackman recommended Kate Hudson for the film, and their on-screen chemistry together.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to watching the documentary, the challenges of adapting it into a screenplay, and why you wanted to tell this story as a filmmaker?

Craig Brewer: Well, I think that I was fooled a little bit. I think I went into this documentary thinking I was just going to watch of a fluffy movie about a Neil Diamond tribute band and I was rooting for this couple as they went about their journey with it. But then suddenly this amazing story with tragedy and commitment to each other and love and family started to unfold. I just felt like, oh, this movie is really about the kind of people that I’m gravitating to in my work. It was about four years after ‘Hustle & Flow’ and it took a long time for people to even bend their mind around the idea of doing that movie. Like, “What could we possibly have in common with a pimp who wants to be a rap artist?” But really, people find that they’re relating to the characters if you treat them with respect and with honesty and try to remove some cynicism from it. I just thought that this story, if someone would trust me enough to do this, that you can take all the music of Neil Diamond, all the lyrics that I think are about being isolated, about being lost and trying to find your way, and put it into a movie that’s really inspiring about people that aren’t in the spotlight.

MF: Finally, I understand that Hugh Jackman recommended Kate Hudson for this role. Can you talk about that and their incredible on-screen chemistry together?

CB: I got a text from Hugh saying, “Kate is Claire. Claire is Kate. Check out this interview that she’s doing on television.” I’ve been trying to make a movie with Kate for about 20 years. I’ve been to her house on three different occasions with three different scripts. I always found her to be an incredible actress, but also just a delightful person that I wanted to be around. Then when I got that message from Hugh, and I saw this television interview with Kate, she was tearing up because she was at a different place in her life. Her son was going off to college, and I was like, well, that can’t be right, I remember when that boy was a baby or a toddler. Then it suddenly hit me. We’re older. We’ve had marriages. We’ve had divorces. We’ve had life. We’ve had a lot of stuff happened to us since you last saw Kate. I also saw that she wanted to sing. She was going to, I wouldn’t say leave Hollywood behind, but she was going to really take a break and start writing songs, going on tour, and playing gigs. I thought, is it just me or is Kate basically auditioning for this movie without even knowing about it? So, she got the script, all three of us got on a Zoom together and I think the three of us basically decided that we’re the ones to make this movie. So, we moved forward with incredible trust and confidence.

    • Ryan Reynolds is working on ideas for a new ‘Deadpool’ movie.
    • He’s looking into teaming the character up with the X-Men.
    • There’s no word on what might happen with the movie.

With last year’s smash success ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ Ryan Reynolds leapfrogged into the position of being among the most valuable performers –– and creators –– among the Marvel ranks.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

But since that movie’s release (which earned more than $1.33 billion worldwide), Reynolds has largely been playing coy about future plans for masked nuisance Wade Wilson. Neither he nor Marvel has confirmed whether he’ll show up in either of the two new team-up movies (those would be ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ which recently confirmed the first part of its sprawling cast) and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’

He’s also been stepping back from the acting side of his career in the last few months, with word that he’s juggling several writing projects, including a comedy about a reforming boyband (more on that below) that could see him reunite with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ co-star Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy.

Still, the Deadpool whispers continue, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds is working on various treatments for an ensemble film featuring three or four X-Men characters. Deadpool would of course appear, but perhaps only as a supporting player.

The actor/writer/producer is said to believe that keeping his f-bomb wielding anti-hero more on the sidelines could allow for the X-Men characters to be used in unexpected ways. Reynolds has been open about every Deadpool movie needing a strong reason to exist, and it’s possible this could provide the avenue he needs.

Right now, it’s all just noodling, Reynolds figuring out what he wants to do without directly involving Disney and Marvel (though you know both companies will be interested to see what he comes up with).

And he’s said that he doesn’t intend to have Deadpool really find a place amongst the likes of the Avengers for storytelling reasons.

Here’s what he said  at the Time 100 summit:

“I like that he’s isolated. If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we’re at the end. That’s his wish fulfillment, and you can’t give him that.”

Not to mention that Marvel is already exploring its own X-Men future, with ‘Hunger Games’ prequel writer Michael Lesslie at work on a script for the mutant heroes.

Chances are we’ll have to wait a while to see what Reynolds comes up with –– he prefers to take his time honing his treatments, and went through several different variations of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ at the early stage before it evolved into its final form (and that was partly thanks to Jackman’s decision to come back to the role of Logan/Wolverine).

What’s Ryan Reynolds boy band movie?

The other big project Reynolds is scripting at the moment is tentatively titled ‘Boy Band.’

Right now, much of the movie is a mystery –– we don’t know exactly what aspect of the boy band life would be featured.

But given that Reynolds is looking to reunite with his friend and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ co-star Jackman on the new movie, we can imagine something catching up with the former members of a boy band group who have since gone their separate ways.

The Netflix TV series ‘Girls5Eva’ covers similar territory, albeit from the point of view of a girl group.

This is what Reynolds told about the project:

“I’m on a second draft. The first draft was incredible and written by one of my favorite writers, Jesse Andrews [‘Me and Earl and the Dying Girl’]. Now I’m on my lonesome. There are no dates or anything just yet. I’m not filming anything for at least a year. This feels like it needs to have an extremely modest budget, and one that wouldn’t be all about going to pay above-the-line actors. Shawn, Hugh and I are open to creative ways to make this movie at an absolute bargain.”

And this was his quote about the trouble with boy bands:

“A lot of members of boy bands — and there are a lot of them — had managers who left them high and dry. They experienced levels of fame that would be very difficult for anyone to navigate, let alone an adolescent, when you are farming out your self-worth to an audience of screaming people. It creates a kind of arrested cultural development. They’re forever associated with that period of time in their lives. This would be about people in their 40s and 50s trying to get their lives back. I think there is something beautiful about that. The north star for me as a producer is joy. I feel like cynicism is a contracting industry and doesn’t have a great shelf life.”

When might we see a Deadpool/X-Men team-up movie on screens?

(L to R) Hugh Jackman, Wesley Snipes, Channing Tatum, Dafne Keen, Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'. Photo: Marvel Studios.

This concept would likely be a few years away if it actually happens –– not only does Reynolds have to commit to a treatment and write (or co-write) it, but there’s also the matter of Marvel approving it and then finding space on its busy release schedule to get it into theaters.

Of course, Reynolds has a lot of sway after the success of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ but the next couple of years alone are packed with planned movies, not to mention that while his most recent film had nods to the X-Men, the Marvel brass is also planning its own use of the classic characters in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ now filming. And the company is also putting the pieces in place for a rebooted mutant team in the future.

Movies and TV just can’t stay away from the British legend of Robin Hood –– the folk hero figure known for stealing from the rich to help the poor –– and you’d think that everything anyone would ever want to say about the character has already been covered.

That’s never been the case with Hood, though, with the most recent being the 2018 version starring Taron Egerton. And now here comes ‘Pig’ and ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ writer/director Michael Sarnoski, who has come up with his own version, ‘The Death of Robin Hood’.

Crafted by Sarnoski before he even got the gig making the ‘Quiet Place’ prequel, the script is moving forward, and the director has already recruited Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer to star.

According to Variety, they’ll now be joined by the likes of Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe, playing unknown characters.

As has previously been reported, the title nods to a darker reimagining of the classic Robin Hood tale.

The film will see the title character grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, a battleworn loner who finds himself gravely injured and in the hands of a mysterious woman who offers him a chance at salvation.

Jackman, of course, will be Hood (in shades of his battered, older Wolverine in ‘Logan’), while Comer (known for the likes of ‘Killing Eve’ and ‘The Last Duel’) as the mystery woman.

Lyrical Media has stumped up the money to make the film, while Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett will produce under their Ryder Picture Company banner, alongside Alexander Black for Lyrical Media and Jackman. Lyrical’s Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers are executive producers alongside Rama Gottumukkala and Sarnoski.

Here’s what Sarnoski says about the movie:

“It has been an incredible opportunity to reinvent and freshly innovate the story we all know of Robin Hood. Securing the perfect cast to transform the script to screen was essential. I could not be more thrilled and trusting in Hugh and Jodie to bring this story to life in a powerful and meaningful way.”

And here are producers Aaron Ryder and Andrew Swett:

“This is not the story of Robin Hood we’ve all come to know. Instead, Michael has crafted something far more grounded and visceral. Thanks to Alexander Black and our friends at Lyrical along with Rama and Michael, the world is going to love seeing Hugh and Jodie together in this epic.”

Skarsgård will probably be pleased to be playing a character that doesn’t require him to be slathered in prosthetic make-up following his turns as Pennywise the demon clown in the ‘It’ movies and, more recently, the title figure in Robert Eggers’ vampiric horror hit ‘Nosferatu.’

He is reprising the Pennywise role in the ‘It’ spin-off prequel TV series ‘Welcome to Derry,’ which will be on screens via HBO later this year.

And he has a few films awaiting release, including horror thriller ‘Locked’ about a thief breaking into a luxury SUV who gets more than he bargained for; historical revenge epic ‘Emperor’ in which he plays King Philip II of Spain and Gus Van Sant’s new crime drama ‘Dead Man’s Wire.’

The actor is also attached to Andrew Niccol’s ‘Lord of War’ sequel ‘Lords of War,’ which finds Nicolas Cage’s character discovering he has a son.

Bartlett, who scored an Emmy for his role as Armond the resort manager in Season 1 of ‘The White Lotus,’ has also gone on to acclaim for a memorable episode of ‘The Last of Us’ and based-on-truth TV series ‘Welcome to Chippendales.’

Coming up, he has roles in new drama ‘Opus’ about an offbeat, long-missing pop star who reappears seemingly leading a cult, musical epic ‘O’Dessa,’ following a young woman’s quest to retrieve a family heirloom, and ‘At the Sea,’ which finds a woman returning to her family home after a stint in rehab.

He’s also at work on the second season of ‘Nine Perfect Strangers,’ which once again stars Nicole Kidman.

And finally we have Jupe, who made his name starring in the first two ‘A Quiet Place’ movies (though doesn’t appear in ‘Day One’ since that focuses on different characters.)

He’s since appeared in the likes of ‘Honey Boy’ and will be part of the cast for the new season of ‘The Night Manager,’ which should arrive this year.

When will ‘The Death of Robin Hood’ be in theaters?

Production is kicking off this week in Ireland, which might explain the latest casting announcement.

A24 nabbed the domestic rights to the movie at last year’s Cannes Film Market, while True Brit Entertainment will be releasing the film in the U.K. and Ireland. There is, as of yet, no announced release date.

What’s the story of the Ryan Reynolds boy band movie?

Ryan Reynolds attends the UK Fan Event of Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool & Wolverine' at Eventim Apollo, London on July 11th, 2024.

Right now, much of the movie is a mystery –– we don’t know exactly what aspect of the boy band life would be featured.

But given that Reynolds is looking to reunite with his friend and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ co-star Hugh Jackman on the new movie, we can imagine something catching up with the former members of a boy band group who have since gone their separate ways.

The Netflix TV series ‘Girls5Eva’ covers similar territory, albeit from the point of view of a girl group.

This is what Reynolds told the Reporter about the project:

Who else would work on the new movie?

(L to R) Hugh Jackman, Shawn Levy, and Ryan Reynolds attend 'The Adam Project' World Premiere at Alice Tully Hall on February 28, 2022 in New York City. Photo by Monica Schipper/Getty Images for Netflix.

While it appears Reynolds is now solely writing the movie himself, there’s a chance he could collaborate down the line with others again.

And from the sounds of it this is being seen as a potential ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ reunion in more ways than one, since director/producer Shawn Levy, who wrangled that giant superhero movie to life with Reynolds, is also likely to be involved as a producer and, potentially, director.

Levy makes sense, since he’s formed a close working bond with Reynolds following ‘Free Guy,’ ‘The Adam Project’ and now ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ though like his colleagues, he’s also someone who has a packed schedule.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

Still, given that it sounds like the boy band project is a ways away, all three could carve out some future time to work on the movie. While Paramount is still apparently involved in the new film, it’s far too early to speculate on when it might hit theaters.

Talking of the more recent Deadpool outing, there has naturally been speculation that Wade Wilson and Logan could return for the two new ‘Avengers’ movies that will be headed our way in 2026 and 2027

Will Deadpool show up in the new ‘Avengers’ movies?

Reynolds plays it coy in the Reporter interview when asked about a potential return for Deadpool.

This is what he had to say:

“There are no updates to share just yet. But I trust Kevin and [Marvel exec] Lou D’Esposito with my life. The character trait I love most about Deadpool is that he’s a fanboy. His enthusiasm and longing to be part of a team is really endearing to me. It’s his overarching wish-fulfillment story. But I don’t think he should ever be an Avenger or an X-Man. I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humor works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”

    Preview:

    • Conan O’Brien will host next year’s Oscars ceremony.
    • The announcement comes after a lengthy search.
    • O’Brien has experience with shows such as ‘The Simpsons’ and his own late night output.

Each year –– aside from when a previous host such as Jimmy Kimmel agrees to return –– there is the seemingly long slog for the team behind the Academy Awards in finding a suitable host for the televised ceremony of handing out trophies to some of the best movies and performances of the past year.

Now we finally know who has the job: Conan O’Brien, a man who is best known for his comedy career, his relatively short-lived stint in primetime late-night TV and his resurgence after that.

Conan began his late-night hosting career in 1993, taking over for David Letterman on NBC’s ‘Late Night.’ After an ill-fated, year-long tenure at ‘The Tonight Show’ after replacing Jay Leno in 2009, O’Brien later moved to TBS for ‘Conan,’ which he hosted from 2011 to 2021.

    noeLbecwNqZiloOsL4XA82

In recent years, he transitioned from anchoring a late night talk show to hosting a hit podcast, ‘Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend,’ and presiding over a podcasting empire under the banner of Team Coco.

A former writer on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and ‘The Simpsons,’ he has garnered 31 Emmy nominations, five of which resulted in wins.

He’s an interesting choice –– certainly a proven talent in both writing and performing, but perhaps not as well-known as some previous hosts. Still, his job will be to make some initial jokes and keep the ceremony moving and we’re fascinated to see what he comes up with.

While the search for a new host is private, there are always leaks and speculation about who might take the stage, following a legacy that has included the likes of Kimmel, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Lewis, Hugh Jackman and Bob Hope.

This year, while Kimmel was offered the chance to return, he turned it down, and comedian John Mulaney also reportedly passed on the job. There was also talk of Jackman coming back, this time alongside ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ co-star/pal Ryan Reynolds, but that has not worked out.

In his own, inimitable, self-deprecating style, O’Brien had this to say about the choice:

“America demanded it and now it’s happening: Taco Bell’s new Cheesy Chalupa Supreme. In other news, I’m hosting the Oscars.”

Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang were more straightforward in their own press release:

“We are thrilled and honored to have the incomparable Conan O’Brien host the Oscars this year. He is the perfect person to help lead our global celebration of film with his brilliant humor, his love of movies, and his live TV expertise. His remarkable ability to connect with audiences will bring viewers together to do what the Oscars do best –– honor the spectacular films and filmmakers of this year.”

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich had this to say:

“Conan is a preeminent comedic voice, whose decades-long success is marked by his distinctive humor and perspective. He joins an iconic roster of comedy greats who have served in this role, and we are so lucky to have him center stage for the Oscars.”

Finally, this was the comment from Oscars executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan:

“Conan has all the qualities of a great Oscars host –– he is incredibly witty, charismatic and funny and has proven himself to be a master of live event television. We are so looking forward to working with him to deliver a fresh, exciting and celebratory show for Hollywood’s biggest night.”

    • Ryan Reynolds is writing a new movie.
    • He’s aiming to re-team with ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy.
    • It’s reportedly not a Marvel movie.

If you enjoyed ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (and given its record-breaking, $1.33 billion haul to date, many of you have, more than once), you’ll be happy to learn that stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman and director Shawn Levy, are looking to reunite for a new project.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

But before visions of snarky clashes and cameos from other Marvel characters begin to dance in your head, a reality check: according to Reynolds, the project that he’s cooking up does not involve their comic-book characters.

Speaking to Variety’s Award Circuit podcast, Reynolds had this to say on the matter:

“I’m spending the year writing. I’m writing a movie for myself, Hugh [Jackman] and Shawn [Levy] to do that is not Marvel.”

So what is the new Ryan Reynolds movie about?

Ryan Reynolds attends the UK Fan Event of Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool & Wolverine' at Eventim Apollo, London on July 11th, 2024.

That’s the billion-dollar question at this point. Reynolds offered up no details about what the new movie might entail, beyond the fact that he’s spending the next few months, possibly the next year, working on a script that will see him share the screen with Jackman once again, and for Levy to call the shots.

The trio are, of course, all good friends –– Reynolds and Jackman having previously shared the screen in ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ and developed a bond, while Levy directed Jackman for ‘Real Steel.’

We don’t yet know where the new movie will land but given the enormous success of their previous collaboration (Marvel trappings or no), you have to guess that studios and streamers to will be scrambling to get a look and secure their services.

Also, despite Reynolds naysaying, the possibility remains that he’s quietly coming up with ideas for a future ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ team-up, assuming they’re not already on the roster for the upcoming ‘Avengers’ movies due to hit screens in 2026 and 2027.

Separately, Reynolds has a role (possibly a voice part) in next year’s ‘Animal Friends’ and is also in the cast for John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s follow-up to ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,’ called ‘Mayday,’ which is reportedly about a stranded pilot.

Add to that a variety of projects in development and his various business ventures, including co-chairman of Wrexham Football Club, whose ongoing efforts will be documented when Hulu series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ returns next year.

As for Jackman, he’s playing a farmer in sheep detective mystery (not a joke) ‘Three Bags Full,’ and is co-starring with Kate Hudson in ‘Song Sung Blue,’ about a real-life husband-and-wife Neil Diamond tribute act.

The actor and singer also has a series of live shows in New York with dates across 2025.

And there remains, of course, speculation that the two actors are hot favorites to host next March’s Oscar ceremony. Nothing has been announced yet, but they’re certainly on the wishlist for the producers.

  • ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Deleted Scene Offers Hope for Gambit

    Preview:

    • Ryan Reynolds released a deleted scene from ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
    • The moment hints at Channing Tatum’s Gambit escaping the Void.
    • Tatum has been vocal about his desire to keep playing the character.

Once upon a time, Channing Tatum was going to be Gambit.

That time was 2014, and the actor was signed on to star in and produce a movie about the card-slinging, Cajun-accented X-Men character who had previously been brought to screen in animated form and by Taylor Kitsch in live-action for 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine.’

Of course, we all know what happened next… or rather, what didn’t happen. The ‘Gambit’ stand-alone lingered in development limbo as filmmakers came and went (Tatum, who later turned to directing, even offered to handle it himself if it would help), and by the time Disney bought Fox, the project was pretty much dead.

Until Deadpool. Yes, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ one of the smash hits of the summer, the movie that has burned through multiple box office records (worldwide total at time of writing? $1.2 billion and counting) finally gave Tatum the chance to play Gambit on screen.

And now the movies’ star/producer/writer Ryan Reynolds has released some deleted footage to social media that offers a hopeful hint for Gambit’s future.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

What did Ryan Reynolds post about Gambit?

Quick spoiler alert for the four people who have yet to see ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’… near the end of the movie, it’s implied that Gambit, along with some other veteran characters, might have been swallowed by giant cloud creature Alioth.

But it appears that’s not the case for Gambit.

Taking to Instagram, Reynolds put up a snipped scene from the movie, which you can find below:

In the small moment, we see Gambit walking through the wreckage of Cassandra Nova’s (Emma Corrin) forces, and there is a distinct color behind him, which indicates the presence of a portal (or, as Reynolds puts it both on film and in his caption, a “Marvel Sparkle Circle.”)

What does that mean for Gambit? A potential escape from the Void where he was born.

What has Channing Tatum said about returning as Gambit?

In an interview with Variety, Tatum said this about his hopes for returning as the character:

“I would do lots of terrible things to make that happen. I wanted it for the last 10 years. It’s in Bob Iger and Kevin Feige’s hands. I pray to God. Write it into existence, friend.”

He also wrote more directly on social media himself, thanking Ryan Reynolds for the chance to actually play the role, however briefly:

“I thought I had lost Gambit forever. But Ryan fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause I’m not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me. I love ya buddy…I’m so grateful to be in this movie. It’s a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater.”

At the moment, our sad guess would hew closer to negative territory. So while we’d never say never, we’re also not holding our breath.
