‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8, Episode 5 Photos Prepares Everyone for War of the Queens

    HBO

Now that the Night King is off the “Game of Thrones” board, the only enemy to checkmate is the Queen.

But which queen is the greater threat: Dragon Queen Daenerys Targaryen or Lion Queen Cersei Lannister?

HBO released nine images from Season 8, Episode 5, which is still untitled, as usual this season. And as usual, these teaser photos show very little about what we can expect in the episode. We can glean from the above image that Jon Snow and his forces have caught up to join Daenerys, as they amass to attack King’s Landing.

It’s also clear everyone is extremely worried (Tyrion) or sad (Daenerys), or both (Grey Worm). Meanwhile, Cersei looks as smugly confident as ever, though her pirate paramour Euron Greyjoy actually looks a bit concerned as he scans the skies. And we get a good look at the Golden Company’s captain, Harry Strickland.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Alum Richard Madden in Talks for Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’: Report

‘Game of Thrones’ Alum Richard Madden in Talks for Marvel’s ‘The Eternals’: Report

    Sophie Mutevelian/World Productions/Netflix

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves past the “Endgame” and into its next phase, it’s already looking for its new “Avengers”-size hit. Enter “The Eternals,” which has already accrued quite an interesting crop of talent, including reported roles for Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani.

Now, TheWrap is reporting that another familiar face is circling the project, with Richard Madden — the former Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones” and current Golden Globe-winning star of BBC/Netflix series “Bodyguard” — in talks to take a part in the flick. According to the trade, there are no details yet about who Madden would be playing, though Jolie is believed to be playing the lead, Sersi (a name that should be familiar to the onetime “Thrones” star — though TheWrap cautions that no, they’re definitely not the same character).

“Eternals” centers around the titular ancient race of human beings created by a cosmic entity known as the Celestials, who possess superhuman abilities and can harness cosmic energy, among other impressive traits. The comic series was created by Marvel legend Jack Kirby in the ’70s, and reminds us of a mashup between the “X-Men” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

Marvel has recruited “The Rider” director Chloe Zhao to helm “The Eternals,” from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo (“Ruin”). Stay tuned to see who else joins the fold.

“Game of Thrones” has edited out an errant coffee cup from last Sunday’s episode.

The Great Coffee Cup Gaffe inspired a ton of memes and elicited a light-hearted response from HBO, but it seems the show wasn’t content to let the anachronistic item remain. As of Tuesday morning, the streaming version of the episode, “The Last of the Starks,” available on HBO Go and HBO Now had been edited to remove it.

Here are screenshots comparing the moment, before and after the new change:

    HBO

After eagle-eyed fans first noticed the coffee cup on the episode, HBO initially made fun of the error, tweeting, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

And the show’s art director, Hauke Richter, told Variety, “It’s not uncommon for such misplaced elements to mistakenly end up in the final cut of TV shows and movies.”

Of course, with streaming television, “final cut” is becoming a loose term.

After a mistake led to a coffee cup popping up in Episode 4 of “Game of Thrones” Season 8, HBO is laughing off the gaffe. The premium network joined in with the jokes from fans on Monday, issuing a statement that “explained” what happened.

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake,” HBO wrote, per Variety. “Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”

The official “Game of Thrones” Twitter account also shared the “news from Winterfell,” spilling the tea to fans.

While, yes, a mixed up order is something we can all relate to, that’s not what actually happened, of course. The cup was presumably forgotten on the table during filming. “Game of Thrones” Art Director Hauke Richter didn’t know the specifics of how it happened, but he told Variety on Monday that such mistakes sometimes happen.

“It’s not uncommon for such misplaced elements to mistakenly end up in the final cut of TV shows and movies,” he wrote.

Good for fans for spotting it, but in the meantime, we have bigger things to worry about — namely, who will live and who will die — as “Game of Thrones” heads to its end. Episodes air Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

  • A Coffee Cup Showed Up on ‘Game of Thrones’ and Fans Had a Latte Jokes

Even the Mother of Dragons needs her latte, apparently.

Eagle-eyed “Game of Thrones” fans had to do a double-take during Sunday night’s episode when a takeout coffee cup made a brief appearance on a table next to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in one scene. The moment immediately went viral on social media.

Such a jolting anachronism on one of the biggest series on television couldn’t pass without Twitter users making a bunch of jokes — including taking swipes at a certain coffee chain’s penchant for misspelling customers’ names, and calling back to last week’s poorly-lit episode (and its cinematographer’s snippy self-defense).

Variety reached out to “Game of Thrones” art director Hauke Richter for comment on the cup’s cameo, and the trade reported that Richter responded that “he had not yet seen Sunday night’s episode but noted that it’s not uncommon for such misplaced elements to mistakenly end up in the final cut of TV shows and movies.”

“Things can get forgotten on set,” Richter added in his email reply, telling Variety that he thought the mistake had been “so blown out of proportion [because] it has not happened with ‘Thrones’ so far.”

You can draw your own conclusions about whether or not fans are making too big a deal of the error, but we have a feeling that the show’s editors are going to be closely combing every remaining episode for additional mistakes, just in case.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8, Episode 5 Trailer Pits Dragon Queen Against Lion Queen

‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8, Episode 5 Trailer Pits Dragon Queen Against Lion Queen

    HBO

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground.”

HBO’s trailer for “Game of Thrones” Season 8, Episode 5 promises the bloody battle for the Iron Throne we’ve been waiting for between the Dragon Queen, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Lion Queen, Cersei Lannister.

And Daenerys also may live up to her father’s name and become the Mad Queen after the events of this week’s episode [SPOILERS AHEAD] — the deaths of her dragon Rhaegal and her longtime advisor/translator Missandei.

The trailer features no dialogue, so not much can be divined from it. It seems Daenerys does take time to regroup after the initial strike that took out Rhaegal, since Jon Snow has caught up to her forces on the road.

Director Miguel Sapochnik returns for the penultimate episode of the series, after helming Episode 3’s “The Long Night.” Cast members have hinted that this battle is even bigger and more show-stopping than the one waged against the Night King’s Army of the Dead.

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’: Kit Harington Teases ‘Twisted and Uncomfortable’ Vibe in Next Episode

‘Game of Thrones’: Kit Harington Teases ‘Twisted and Uncomfortable’ Vibe in Next Episode

At this point, “Game of Thrones” fans should expect engrossing episodes every week, but star Kit Harington has just set the bar even higher for the next Season 8, Episode 4.

The actor, who plays Jon Snow, recently opened up to EW about the upcoming episode, and he revealed that it’s “one of [his] favorites.” Apparently, that’s because it will have audiences feeling unsettled.

If you aren’t  up to date on “Game of Thrones” Season 8 yet, there are spoilers ahead!

The issue, as Harington (Jon Snow) explained, is that the Battle of Winterfell went surprisingly well for the characters in the North. They won the battle, most of the major players survived, and the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) was slayed. It all seems too good to be true.

“As an audience you’re going, ‘This is only episode 4, something’s going to happen,’” Harington told EW. “And that’s the cool thing because I think the characters are aware of this as well. There’s something twisted and uncomfortable about it.”

Harington described the feeling as “Shakespearean,” which seems apt. There is still a tangled web to unravel and the Iron Throne to fight over. As Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) indicated in the promo for the upcoming episode, the great war is over but the last war is still to come.

Of course, Harington didn’t spill anything about whether or not viewers’ anxiety will be warranted; the cast is under strict instructions to maintain the show’s secrecy. Yet, we’ve seen seven seasons’ worth of evidence that the story can be very, very brutal. Needless to say, we’re on edge going into Episode 4.

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Sets New Ratings Record With ‘The Long Night’

‘Game of Thrones’ Sets New Ratings Record With ‘The Long Night’

    HBO

“The Long Night” was dark and full of terrors — and watched by a lot of people.

Sunday night’s episode of “Game of Thrones” was not just the longest in the series’ history, but also the most-watched. It set a new record for the HBO drama with 17.8 million viewers, including same-day replays and streaming.

That passes the previous record of 17.4 million viewers for the Season 8 premiere on April 14.

The initial airing of “The Long Night” drew 12.02 million people, the second largest behind only the Season 7 finale (12.07 million). The viewership will grow as additional airings and streaming numbers are added through the week.

It was also the most-tweeted episode in TV history.

“The Long Night,” directed by Miguel Sapochnik, ran for 82 minutes and was devoted entirely to the Battle of Winterfell, which pitted the living against the Night King and his Army of the Dead. The intense, seemingly hopeless fight culminated with the assassin-trained Arya Stark surprising the Night King and stabbing him a dragonglass dagger, decimating the White Walkers and wights.

“Game of Thrones” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.

Sunday night was dark and full of tweets.

The Battle of Winterfell finally came in “Game of Thrones” Season 8, Episode 3, “The Long Night.” Not surprisingly, the much-anticipated showdown was intense for viewers, and a lot of them felt compelled to tweet about it. In fact, there more than 7.8 million tweets about the episode, making it the most-tweeted about in TV history, per Variety. The episode overtook another Season 8 installment — the premiere — to gain the crown, but we suspect the record will be topped again by the time the series concludes.

If you haven’t seen the episode yet, there are spoilers ahead!

Some characters inspired more tweets than others. Fittingly, the hero of the episode, Arya Stark (Maisie Williams), was most-tweeted about. Twitter found that she led the pack, followed by the Night King (Vladimir Furdik), Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), and Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey). The hashtags #Arya and #AryaStark took off, as did #NotToday, the line from Melisandre (Carice van Houten) that inspired the Night King Slayer.

Here are some highlights from Twitter:

We’ll see if “Game of Thrones” Season 8, Episode 4 tweets can top the most recent episode’s. The show airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
