  • George R.R. Martin Addresses ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending and If It’s Different From His Books

George R.R. Martin Addresses ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending and If It’s Different From His Books

    HBO

Not sure if you’ve heard, but “Game of Thrones” ended its run on HBO this past Sunday. But while the television series is over, George R.R. Martin’s books are not.

The author still has two more installments to go and has been working on the long-delayed “The Winds of Winter” for over eight years. The show’s creators, David Benioff and D.B Weiss, had to chart their own course in the final two seasons, though they have repeatedly said that Martin had revealed key plot points to them.

Now that the show is over, fans have an ending. But is it Martin’s ending, too? The author addressed that question in a new blog post.

“How will it all end? I hear people asking. The same ending as the show? Different? Well… yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes. And no. And yes,” he wrote.

Martin added, “Book or show, which will be the ‘real’ ending? It’s a silly question. How many children did Scarlett O’Hara have?”

He also commemorated the show’s cast and crew and praised Benioff and Weiss for shepherding his “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga to the screen. He also reminded viewers that there are many differences between the books and the show.

“I am working in a very different medium than David and Dan, never forget. They had six hours for this final season. I expect these last two books of mine will fill 3000 manuscript pages between them before I’m done… and if more pages and chapters and scenes are needed, I’ll add them.”

As for book six, “The Winds of Winter,” well, he’s still working on it.

It “is very late, I know, I know, but it will be done,” Martin wrote. “I won’t say when, I’ve tried that before, only to burn you all and jinx myself… but I will finish it, and then will come ‘A DREAM OF SPRING.’” So there you have it. Sort of.”

‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Sets HBO’s All-Time Ratings Record

    HBO

When it comes to ratings records, “Game of Thrones” is king: The show’s series finale scored some huge viewership numbers, putting it atop the most-watched lists for both “GOT” itself, and cable outlet HBO as a whole.

Viewers are still debating the merits of the episode, “The Iron Throne,” but its success at pulling in eyeballs is indisputable. The finale notched 13.6 million viewers in its initial airing on HBO, and 19.3 million total viewers when counting replays and streaming views.

Both of those numbers are records for “Thrones” (and for HBO), besting the previous champ: itself. Last week’s penultimate installment, “The Bells,” earned 12.48 million and 18.4 million viewers, respectively.

The initial-airing viewership numbers are particularly impressive when viewed within the context of the history of HBO programming. “The Sopranos” was the previous title holder in that category, scoring 13.43 million viewers in 2002 for its fourth season premiere. “GOT” also whacked “The Sopranos” in the most-watched series finale race, besting that show’s 11.9 million record set in 2007.

The watch may have ended for “Game of Thrones,” but we have a feeling that these jaw-dropping numbers will live on for a long, long time.

When you play the “Game of Thrones,” you win or you die. And then you tweet about it.

After eight seasons and 73 episodes, HBO’s fantasy epic closed the book with a series finale that produced some winners, one major death, and many, many hot takes on Twitter.

There’s a “Game of Thrones” uprising going on, and no, it’s not the one in Westeros.

Disgruntled fans are calling on HBO to remake Season 8 — specifically, “with competent writers.” Harsh. A Change.org user named Dylan D. started a petition last week, and the message is short and to the point. It says:

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material (i.e. the books) to fall back on.

This series deserves a final season that makes sense.

Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!

The petition has gained traction. There are more than 67,000 signatures at the time of publishing — and at least 13,000 of those came in the time it took to write this article. Clearly, there are a lot of fans who are displeased by how the final season is going. Beyond the petition, there was outcry on Twitter this week, with many fans slamming Season 8, Episode 5 as the “worst episode ever.”

It’s not uncommon for the end of a series to be divisive, particularly in a case like “Game of Thrones,” where there are so many characters that fans have strong feelings about. Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont) said in March 2018 that while he liked the ending, he expected it to be controversial. He noted that “you cannot please everyone,” and the existence of the petition supports Glain’s point.

For all that we’re sure HBO is sad to see “Game of Thrones” go, we’d be shocked if the network actually decided to remake Season 8. Perhaps even more shocking would be if the actors were willing to sign on for a redo after all they went through to shoot it the first time. And yet, if it happens, you can bet we’ll be watching … along with millions and millions of others.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Photos Don’t Reveal a Damn Thing

‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Photos Don’t Reveal a Damn Thing

    HBO

The “Game of Thrones” series finale lays under a heavy veil of secrecy and two new photos released by HBO … don’t change that at all.

Not that Season 8’s pre-episodic stills have revealed much of anything. But this time, there are only two of them, and both are images seen in the finale trailer.

The photo above is a shot from behind Daenerys Targaryen as she surveys the destruction she and her dragon Drogon wrought in the penultimate episode, “The Bells.” She is flanked by the ever loyal Unsullied while fires continue to burn in the distance. Long live the Mad Queen?

The other still features Tyrion Lannister, her Hand of the Queen, looking extremely troubled as he makes his way through the rubble-strewn streets of King’s Landing. Does he yet know that his brother Jaime and sister Cersei perished in each other’s arms as the Red Keep crumbled?

    HBO

“The Bells” notched a series-high rating with 18.4 million viewers, but received a ton of backlash on social media — and even labeled as possibly the worst episode of the entire series.

The series finale caps eight seasons and 73 episodes of HBO’s award-winning fantasy drama. Written and directed by series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the 80-minute untitled episode airs May 19 at 9 p.m.

  • The Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie Will Come From ‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

The Next ‘Star Wars’ Movie Will Come From ‘Game of Thrones’ Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

    HBO

“Game of Thrones” is ending, but showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are ready to start their journey in a galaxy far, far away.

The next “Star Wars” movie — after “Rise of Skywalker,” slated for release in December 2022 — will come from the pair, Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed today at the MoffetNathanson Media & Communications summit.

“We did a deal with David Benioff and D.B Weiss, who are famous for ‘Game of Thrones,’ and the next movie that we release will be theirs,” Iger said. “And we’re not saying anything more about that.”

Disney recently announced three new “Star Wars” movies, to follow the concluding chapter of the Skywalker saga, to open on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.

Benioff and Weiss were brought into the “Star Wars” fold in February 2018 to write and direct a series of films. They joined Rian Johnson, director of “The Last Jedi,” as the architects of the next phase of Lucasfilm projects.

Benioff and Weiss wrote and directed this Sunday’s series finale of “Game of Thrones.” They created the series in partnership with author George R.R. Martin.

The final season has proven divisive among fans, but it’s still a pop cultural phenomenon. This past Sunday’s episode, the penultimate, notched a series high in ratings.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Reactions: Season 8, Episode 5 the Worst Episode Ever?

‘Game of Thrones’ Reactions: Season 8, Episode 5 the Worst Episode Ever?

The fight for King’s Landing finally happened in “Game of Thrones” Season 8, Episode 5, and oh, was it big one.

Now that fans have seen the show’s penultimate episode, there is a lot of talk about it on social media. The long-awaited showdown went differently than many expected, and it has proven to be super controversial. While there are people who enjoyed it, there’s also a sizable contingent decrying it.

There are spoilers from the episode “The Bells” ahead, so read on at your own risk!

Fans had a number of complaints about the episode, from Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) unleashing fire and fury on King’s Landing after the people surrendered to Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) dying in the arms of the man who loved her. The phrase “worst episode ever” was frequently mentioned in tweets after the episode aired. Very, very frequently.

And  yet, for all those criticisms, there were words of encouragement, too. Some fans spoke out in defense of “The Bells,” with many arguing that people should have seen this coming.

Regardless of whether people loved it or hated it, we expect they’ll tune in for the series finale. The final episode of “Game of Thrones” airs Sunday, May 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Trailer Brings Everything to an End

‘Game of Thrones’ Series Finale Trailer Brings Everything to an End

    HBO

When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die; there is no middle ground.

And in next week’s series finale of “Game of Thrones,” we’ll finally see who wins. Fans certainly got to see who died in the penultimate installment, “The Bells.”

    [SPOILERS AHEAD]

Daenerys Targaryen truly lived up to her heritage, becoming the Mad Queen, as she and her dragon Drogon laid fiery waste to King’s Landing — despite the city’s surrender. Buildings crumbled and many innocent people perished. Her allies Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister were horrified by the carnage.

Cersei Lannister also died during the attack, along with brother Jaime, which means Daenerys now has a clear path to the Iron Throne. But should she sit on it?

The series finale trailer ominously hints that Dany’s reign over the Seven Kingdoms would be dark and full of terrors.

“The Bells” featured the exits of several notable characters: spymaster Varys, executed early in the episode for treason; pirate Euron Greyjoy after a fight with Jamie; Cersei’s advisor Qyburn; and both Sandor Clegane and his brother The Mountain, after a bloody and hard-fought “Cleganebowl.”

The series finale caps eight seasons and 73 episodes of HBO’s award-winning fantasy drama. Written and directed by series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the 80-minute episode airs May 19 at 9 p.m.

It’s already clear that “Game of Thrones” is a cultural phenomenon, but now there’s even more proof. It turns out that the show has had a huge impact on Taylor Swift‘s music.

The pop star opened up about her appreciation for “Game of Thrones” during a recent interview with EW, and she admitted that a lot of the tracks on her last album, “reputation,” were “influenced by the show” because she started binge-watching it in 2016. Although many songs were inspired by events from her life, she said she saw them “through a ‘Game of Thrones’ filter.”

While Swift gave examples of specific plot lines that influenced specific songs (“‘Look What You Made Me Do’ is literally Arya Stark’s kill list,” as she told EW), she also shared what she learned about writing.

“My entire outlook on storytelling has been shaped by [‘Game of Thrones’] — the ability to foreshadow stories, to meticulously craft cryptic story lines,” she said.

And so there you have it: more proof of the show’s wide-reaching impact. From pop songs to Emmy campaigns to presidential tweets, “Game of Thrones” is everywhere. The hit series may be ending with Season 8, but it will clearly live on in the cultural lexicon — as well as in Swift’s music.

  • ‘Family Guy’ Turns to ‘Game of Thrones’ Tactics to Win an Emmy

‘Family Guy’ Turns to ‘Game of Thrones’ Tactics to Win an Emmy

    Family Guy
    Fox

The Emmys are coming, and “Family Guy” isn’t above a little “Game of Thrones”-style trickery.

20th Century Fox TV has been sending out mailers to Emmy voters, and the one for “Family Guy” capitalizes on “Game of Thrones” mania in a fitting and funny way. It shows Peter Griffin (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), seated on the Iron Throne with a direwolf-like Brian (also voiced by MacFarlane) by his side, under the following message:

Due to a printing error, if you wish to vote for “Game of Thrones,” please check the “Family Guy” box on the animation ballot.

Of course, voters should know that this doesn’t refer to a real “printing error.” It’s just another case of “Family Guy” campaigning for an Emmy in a creative way — one that HBO approved, as executive producer Rich Appel told Variety. In the past, the show’s mailers have drawn inspiration from other topic issues as well, the publication pointed out. Examples include the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the election of Donald Trump.

“Family Guy” has been nominated for 27 Emmys over the years so far, with eight wins overall. It has never won for outstanding animated program, but with its new mailers, that may soon change. Cersei would be proud.
