  • ‘Deadpool 2’ Gets the PG-13 Treatment in ‘Once Upon a Deadpool’

‘Deadpool 2’ Gets the PG-13 Treatment in ‘Once Upon a Deadpool’

    20th Century Fox

The Merc With a Mouth is cleaning up his act — for the most part, anyway.

Fox has confirmed its rumored plan to re-release “Deadpool 2” as a PG-13 film, re-edited with a bonus framing device that cleans up the R-rated language and violence of the original and repackages the film for a more family-friendly audience. According to Deadline, the idea is to target teen moviegoers who are on holiday break in December.

“Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” star Ryan Reynolds explained in an interview with Deadline. “I’ve said no since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘Yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…”

As fans speculated from Reynolds’s hint back in September, Savage will indeed be playing a role similar to his part in “The Princess Bride,” in which he listened to his grandfather read him the titular book. This time, Reynolds/Deadpool is telling the decidedly dirtier tale.

Part of the inspiration for “Once Upon a Deadpool” is the looming merger between Disney and Fox, and how Disney/Marvel can potentially weave Deadpool into the MCU. Deadline reports that executives will be watching the performance of “Once” very closely — though filmmakers admit that their baby doesn’t necessarily play well with others, and that’s by design.

“’Deadpool’ has been a unique property and, by definition, what’s in a Deadpool movie is all the stuff that can’t be in any other superhero movie,” writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick told the trade.

“Once Upon a Deadpool” opens on December 12; it will remain in theaters for a limited run through Christmas Eve.

    Walt Disney

Disney has invoked the right of parley with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Those guys wrote “Zombieland” and the first two “Deadpool” movies (which were all rated R). Now they are in early talks to write a script for a reboot of Disney’s PG-13 “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.

That’s the scoop from Deadline. The site added that Jerry Bruckheimer would continue to produce the films. That’s basically all the intel they had, but more drips and drabs will surely leak out as this moves forward.

The billion dollar question is whether Johnny Depp would be involved. It’s a reboot, but who knows what that might mean in terms of cast or story.

Would Disney be disinclined to acquiesce to fans’ request for more (Captain) Jack Sparrow?

Yeah, he can be controversial — and the James Gunn situation showed how little Disney wants to be even semi-controversial — but Depp is also their “Pirates” cash cow. Does this franchise work (make $$$) without him?

The most recent film with Depp’s Sparrow — the fifth film in the series, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” — was released in 2017 and made just under $800 million worldwide. That sounds damn good but it was the second-lowest grossing movie in the series. It was also panned by critics and only got lukewarm user reviews from viewers.

Back in August, rumors spread — via The GWW — that Disney was still moving forward on “Pirates of the Caribbean 6.” They said “Dead Men Tell No Tales” co-director Joachim Rønning might return, with a script seeming to be in progress by writers Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, and Jeff Nathanson.

No idea what’s going on with that, or how it — if it happens — it could relate to this reboot idea. Just grab some rum (unless it’s gone again) and stay tuned.

  • ‘Deadpool’ Movie Coming in December, ‘Dark Phoenix’ Delayed

‘Deadpool’ Movie Coming in December, ‘Dark Phoenix’ Delayed

    20th Century Fox

“Dark Phoenix” will rise a few months later than scheduled, and a different kind of “Deadpool” might be ringing in the holidays.

Just days after releasing the first teaser trailer, 20th Century Fox is pushing back the “X-Men” movie, while adding an untitled “Deadpool” movie to the upcoming December calendar.

The flurry of moves are all a domino effect. Fox is opening an untitled “Deadpool” movie on December 21. That means it has to delay “Alita: Battle Angel” from that date to Feb. 14, 2019. In turn, that pushes back “Dark Phoenix” to June 7, 2019. And the planned “Gambit” movie (which apparently will have a romantic comedy vibe) has been pushed from June 7, 2019 to March 13, 2020.

Many are speculating that Fox is planning to release a PG-13 version of “Deadpool 2,” May’s hit sequel. Star Ryan Reynolds fanned the rumor flames by posting an image calling back to “The Princess Bride.” In the pic, Fred Savage is in bed, listening to Deadpool read a bedtime story. That could indicate the PG-13 version will have a similar format and could explain the difference in language and violence levels.

If the PG-13 “Deadpool” is indeed what will open Dec. 21, it will have a lot of stiff competition at the box office in “Aquaman,” “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” and “Bumblebee.”

    Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Disney won’t use The Force as much moving forward.

Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger just talked to The Hollywood Reporter about everything in his vast world — which includes ABC (so they talked “Roseanne”), Marvel (so they talked James Gunn), Lucasfilm (so they talked “Star Wars”), and the newly acquired 21st Century Fox (so they talked “X-Men”).

Comic book fans don’t normally pay close attention to corporate acquisitions, but now that Marvel Studios and Fox’s Marvel properties are in the same family, that means potential X-Men/Deadpool/Fantastic Four crossovers with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers.

    Marvel Studios

THR asked Iger about that, and got confirmation that Marvel Studios/MCU boss Kevin Feige is going to run the whole combined Marvel show:

How is Marvel going to absorb Fox’s X-Men franchise? Is Kevin Feige going to oversee everything?

I think it only makes sense. I want to be careful here because of what’s been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn’t be two Marvels.

So Deadpool could become an Avenger?

Kevin’s got a lot of ideas. I’m not suggesting that’s one of them. But who knows?

    In Feige We Trust.

On to “Star Wars.” The “Star Wars” franchise is hardly in trouble, but the excitement of the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” awakening the galaxy has already led to some fatigue and frustration. The disappointing box office of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” was blamed, in part, on just too many Star Wars movies coming out on top of each other.

    THR asked Iger about that:

Many believe Disney should pump the breaks and not put out a Star Wars movie each year.

I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast. You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn’t mean we’re not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [‘Game of Thrones’ creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.’s. But I think we’re gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.

“More careful about volume and timing.” So fewer films, and those films will have more breathing room between them to build anticipation. Not sure what that might mean for upcoming standalone films after “Rogue One” and “Solo,” but it doesn’t sound that promising.

    Lucasfilm

Iger also talked a bit about Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which is expected to launch in late 2019. There’s a lot to chew on in Iger’s THR Q&A, and since Disney pretty much touches every aspect of the pop culture univese, he has a lot of say in what we watch and when — and where — we get to watch it.

    Suck marmalade, Pads!

There are certain feuds you just never see coming, and they all include sweet innocent Paddington the bear.

Paddington, it should be noted, never did anything more harsh than reply to Ryan Reynolds with a hard stare.

The “Deadpool” star started the Twitter feud, because … apparently Deadpool needs a new nemesis.

In truth, Ryan Reynolds was just doing his usual troll work, joking that fans should include “Deadpool 2” in more People’s Choice categories this year:

Paddington 2” star Hugh Bonneville offered his own perfect reply:

Chris Hemsworth Tries to Share ‘Avengers 4’ Spoilers, and Trade Roles With Deadpool

    Chris Hemsworth, Thor, Thor: Ragnarok
    Marvel Studios

Well. Chris Hemsworth may or may not be in “Star Trek 4,” but he seems free to take over Ryan Reynolds‘ job as Deadpool.

That’s boldly going where only one guy has gone before!

Hemsworth made headlines Friday for his “Star Trek” salary dispute, but he seemed to be in great spirits over the weekend. That’s probably because he celebrated his birthday on August 11, turning 35.

Thor had some birthday cake, as one does, and that’s when he made his quip about taking over as the Merc with a Mouth:

Of course, Ryan Reynolds jumped in and offered to be the new Thor:

They’re joking, but there’s something to that idea. Marvel and Disney are in the process of joining forces, which should eventually bring the MCU and Marvel-Fox worlds together. Anyone else up for a Thor/Deadpool buddy movie?

So on Saturday Thor almost burned his other eye out. On Sunday, he won a Teen Choice Award, but wasn’t around to accept it because he’s filming “Men in Black” in the U.K. So instead he taped a cute video, sharing “Avengers 4” title and plot spoilers that just didn’t survive the connection:

We’re supposed to learn the title of “Avengers 4” sometime later this year, around when we get the first teasers for “Captain Marvel.” “Avengers 4” opens in theaters May 4 (for now). Meanwhile, “Deadpool 2” is now out on Digital and coming to DVD/Blu-ray August 21.

‘Deadpool 2’ Star Zazie Beetz in Talks for Joaquin Phoenix’s ‘Joker’ Movie

    Deadpool 2, Zazie Beetz, Domino
    20th Century Fox

Zazie Beetz is still feelin’ lucky. The Domino actress is fresh off “Deadpool 2” and now she’s ready to join another superhero/villain movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Atlanta” actress is in talks to join Joaquin Phoenix‘s “Joker” origin movie, from director Todd Phillips.

She would play “a single mother who catches the interest of the man who will become the ‘clown prince of crime.’”

“Joker” has been compared to a dark crime thriller, described as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society that is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

It’s meant to have a lower budget than the DC Extended Universe movies, since it’s not part of that world. (Jared Leto is still the current Joker in the DCEU, and he may still get his own movie.)

“Joker” — the official title — is scheduled to start filming in New York in September.

Meanwhile, Beetz’s career is still flying high. She’s an Emmy nominee for her role as Van in “Atlanta,” and she has several films coming up beyond “Joker” — including “Finding Her,” “Slice,” “High Flying Bird,” “The Undiscovered Country,” “Against All Enemies,” and “Pale Blue Dot.” She’ll also be back for more fun with Ryan Reynolds in the eventual “X-Force” movie.

“Joker” was just given a release date of Oct. 4, 2019.
