  • ‘Deadpool 3’ Halts Shooting as Actors Go on Strike

Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Marvel Studios’ ‘Deadpool 3.’

Given how much of the ‘Deadpool’ movies have been written on the fly, you might have expected the latest –– ‘Deadpool 3’ to shut down when the Writers Guild of America went out on strike earlier this year. And yet… it kept going, with no official explanation other than the fact that the script had already been written.

But now, as SAG-AFTRA –– the union that represents actors –– joins the writers on the picket line, ‘Deadpool 3’ is among the productions shutting down.

The third ‘Deadpool’, which also features Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine, had been shooting in the UK, and it’s clear the strike is having a global impact as other productions, such as the ‘Mortal Kombat’ sequel, which had been filming in Australia, are also shutting down.

Many movies and shows had already been delayed by the writers’ strike, and the actors’ action promises to affect output even further. This represents the first time in decades that two branches of filmmaking unions have been on strike at the same time.

What’s happening with the actors’ strike?

Much like the Writers’ Guild, the actors’ unions had been negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to secure a new contract. Actors have long been unhappy with reduced residuals brought about by streaming services and are displeased by studios claiming they can’t pay more while company CEOs earn millions.

Here’s SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher on the strike announcement:

“The gravity of this move is not lost on me or our negotiating committee or our board members who have voted unanimously to proceed with a strike. It’s a very serious thing that impacts thousands, if not millions, of people all across this country and around the world.”

Another key issue has been studios’ concerning efforts to bring in new technology to replace physical performers. When the strike was called yesterday, SAG-AFTRA revealed one pertinent detail of a studio offer –– digitizing the likeness of background players (or extras), paying them for one day’s work but then being able to use their image in perpetuity and however they please with no other payment.

The AMPTP replied to that with the following statement:

“The claim made today by SAG-AFTRA leadership that the digital replicas of background actors may be used in perpetuity with no consent or compensation is false. In fact, the current AMPTP proposal only permits a company to use the digital replica of a background actor in the motion picture for which the background actor is employed. Any other use requires the background actor’s consent and bargaining for the use, subject to a minimum payment.”

Not everything that had been shooting is shutting down, however –– some productions have been able to keep going through the writers’ strike (which started on May 2nd) because their scripts are complete. That includes HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off ‘House of the Dragon’, which is continuing to shoot through even through the actors’ strike as much of its cast is British and covered by the Equity actors’ union. And while some Equity members have promised to abide by the strike in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA, they have no legal protection if they end up fined or fired by companies they’re working for.

Welcome, then, to the summer of strikes…

If you liked the 2000s ‘X-Men’ movies but had an issue with the black leather costumes the team wore –– there was even a meta reference about it when Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine complained about them, to which James Marsden’s Cyclops responded, “What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” –– prepare to be happy.

Getting ahead of more set pictures arriving showing him in it, the ‘Deadpool 3’ team (including star Ryan Reynolds) has posted an image of Reynolds in his newly modified Deadpool suit walking next to Jackman –– who is in the traditional yellow garb and spiky high hair.

It does seem a little incongruous to see Jackman in such comics faithful attire after years of black leather (or civvies), but the thought of the jokes to be had about it truly makes it worthwhile. And it would truly indicate that there’s either some compelling reason for him to wear that suit or confirmation that this is an alt-universe variant of ‘Logan.’

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and more recently, regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie.

Levy has had the cameras rolling for a few weeks now, and of course pictures have begun to appear online. But, as filmmakers such as ‘Shazam’s David F. Sandberg learned, it’s better to get your own, properly lit and composed images is preferable to bad paparazzi pictures.

A lot of people from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies will be back.

Leslie Uggams is on board to return as Wade Wilson’s roommate Blind Al, alongside Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus and Rob Delaney (from ‘Deadpool 2’) as Peter.

New to the franchise? ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin is co-starring in an unknown new role, one that will reportedly cause trouble for our heroes (when they’re not too busy causing trouble for each other) and ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, while Jennifer Garner was recently confirmed to be reprising the role of Elektra from the ‘Daredevil’ movies.

The multiverse may not reap as many dividends at the box office these days (unless it’s surrounding Spider-Man, apparently), but that isn’t stopping the third ‘Deadpool’ movie from going full meta with the concept.

Deadpool 3’, which features the return of Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth, Wade Wilson already boasts the character heading into the MCU and meeting up with a version of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.

But from the sounds of it, the film –– which has Shawn Levy directing in his latest collaboration with the actor –– will feature a whole host of other Marvel characters.

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, we can add another confirmed person to the list, as Jennifer Garner is back to play the character of Elektra.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

    Who is Elektra?

Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios in 'Elektra.'
Jennifer Garner as Elektra Natchios in ‘Elektra.’ Courtesy of Marvel and 20th Century Fox.

Elektra Natchios, introduced into the pages of Marvel comics by writer Frank Miller in ‘Daredevil #168’ in 1980, has been a constant presence in Daredevil’s life, and frequently a love interest. The daughter of a wealthy Greek entrepreneur, she’s trained from a young age as an assassin and boasts a wide range of abilities, including lethal skills with Sai knives.

In the movies, Garner played her opposite Ben Affleck’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil in the 2003 movie ‘Daredevil,’ but despite that not launching its own franchise, she would return as the character in ‘Elektra’ in 2005, which suffered a similar fate at the box office.

How Elektra will show up in ‘Deadpool 3’ remains to be seen, but we’d put money on it being a cameo and one that likely came about thanks to Garner’s work with Levy and Reynolds on Netflix film ‘The Adam Project’. It’ll certainly be fun to see her back in action.

Who is back from the other ‘Deadpool’ movies?

Returning from either one or both of the established two Deadpool movies are Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus and Rob Delaney as Peter.

New this time are Emma Corrin and Matthew Macfadyen as unknown characters.

Besides the confirmed characters, there are also those who are rumored to be back in action. The internet has been abuzz that Affleck will return as Daredevil, while Chris Evans has also been rumored to be returning to Marvel as a character he’s played in the past. No, not Captain America (even if Evans is most famous as him these days), but Johnny Storm/Human Torch from ‘Fantastic Four.’

The latter is more intriguing (if true) given Marvel’s aim to launch a new version of ‘Fantastic Four’ within the MCU. Clearly Kevin Feige is giving Reynolds and Levy plenty of leeway.

‘Deadpool 3’ is currently scheduled to quip his way into theaters on May 3rd, 2024.

  • ‘Dotty and Soul’ Interview: Leslie Uggams

    hkTva4y0

Premiering on digital and On Demand May 19th is the new comedy ‘Dotty and Soul’ which was written and directed by actor Adam Saunders (‘Family Weekend’).

What is the plot of ‘Dotty and Soul?’

‘Dotty and Soul’ revolves around hot shot entrepreneur Ethan Cox (Adam Saunders), who appears poised to sell his self-driving car company and make his investors filthy rich. But when his problematic Halloween costume gets tweeted, the ensuing social media firestorm nearly ends Ethan’s career. Desperate to figure out a way forward, Ethan hatches a plan: he will hire a 71 year old snack cart vendor, Dotty (Leslie Uggams), to pose as his company’s figurehead, with Ethan still managing from behind the wings. But when Dotty decides to no longer play the straw man, and starts expressing opinions of her own – everything changes.

Who is in the cast of ‘Dotty and Soul?’

‘Dotty and Soul’ stars Leslie Uggams (‘Deadpool’) as Dotty, Adam Saunders (‘Shimmer Lake’) as Ethan Cox, Margot Bingham (‘Barbershop: The Next Cut’) as Isabella, M. Emmet Walsh (‘Blade Runner’) as Harold Eichelbaum, David Koechner (‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy’) as Brannigan, Gary Owen (‘Ride Along’) as Diggy, and Alexis Ren (‘The Enforcer’) as Stefani.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with legendary actress and singer Leslie Uggams about her work on ‘Dotty and Soul,’ her character, Dotty’s relationship with Ethan, working with writer, director and actor Adam Saunders, the message of the movie, and preparing to reprise her role as Blind Al opposite Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in ‘Deadpool 3.’

Leslie Uggams in 'Dotty and Soul.'

You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interviews with Uggams, Adam Saunders and David Koechner.

Moviefone: To begin with, Dotty is quite the hustler in her own right. Can you talk about your approach to playing the character?

Leslie Uggams: I loved the script as soon as I read the script. I loved Dotty. I think people think that people get a certain age and therefore they don’t have many thoughts. She’s in her little world, but she knows how to navigate. Then she meets this wacky guy and he awakes the giant in her and he thinks, “Oh, I’ll be able to manipulate her.” Then all of a sudden he loses control. But he realizes, “Oh my goodness, I think I did the right thing because she’s really smart,” and you never know where your path is going to take you. She gets an opportunity and she gets to have a wonderful relationship with him, and they learn from each other.

MF: Ethan is a hustler too, and he seems to meet his match in Dotty. Can you talk about their relationship and the true friendship and respect that begins to form between the two of them?

LU: Well, the thing is, the hustler is trying to out hustle another hustler, but she manages to one up him each time. Through this, he begins to realize, “Oh my God, maybe I can learn something from this woman.” Plus all of a sudden she realizes, “Wait a minute, I got an opportunity here. Let me go with this. Let me work it.” She has some brilliant ideas and they form this wonderful relationship. But also she teaches him, “Stop trying so hard. Stop trying to be somebody you’re not, because you are really bright. Look what you’ve accomplished. What is all that stuff that you’re wearing?” Stuff like that. She gets him to come down to earth and he helps her finally fulfill the dreams that she wanted. It took many years, but it’s never too late.

(L to R) Adam Saunders and Leslie Uggams in ‘Dotty and Soul.’

MF: What was it like for you working with Adam Saunders, not only as an actor, but also as a writer and director?

LU: We had a great time. We did a lot of improvisation, a lot of times. But we were in tune with each other. From the time I met Adam, we clicked. So being on the set, if an idea came that was better, a line that was better, we went for it. It was a happy set, and everybody, even when we weren’t shooting, we were laughing. That’s a great way to work.

MF: The movie deals with some very serious subject matter, but is also a comedy and is very funny. What was it like for you to have an opportunity to be in a film that is very entertaining but also has an important message at the heart of it?

LU: Well, it’s interesting because when we started filming the movie, we were kind of ahead of what was really happening. Then we got shut down because of the pandemic and we didn’t go back to it till a year later. All of a sudden, the world had caught up to what we were talking about in the movie. We realized that there was a scene that Adam wrote after we came back that was necessary that wasn’t in it originally, but with what happened to (George) Floyd and all these things, we had to address some of the seriousness that was going on in the world. We talked about it, and it turned out to be a wonderful moment. It’s not funny. So therefore, there were certain things that we had to address and it was wonderful. It has a message that talks about those kind of things. So even though it’s a comedy, life happens and we don’t go around laughing every day, especially nowadays. So therefore, it was wonderful to have this teaching moment, that’s what I call it.

MF: Are you excited to reprise your role as Blind Al in ‘Deadpool 3’ opposite Ryan Reynolds and with Hugh Jackman playing Wolverine?

LU: Well, I’m married to an Aussie (Grahame Pratt), so I’m used to those Aussies. I’m not nervous about anything. Of course I just love Ryan, and so I’m excited. I’m really excited about it and Blind Al, she cracks me up. She’s funny.

MF: Finally, do you have any fun memories of working with Jim Henson and the Muppets on ‘The Muppet Show’ in 1979?

LU: I loved it. Oh, it was so much fun doing that show. I thought they were real people. I don’t care what you say.

Looks like ‘Deadpool 3’ is getting more of the gang back together. Following word that Karan Soni is back as taxi driver/Deadpool friend Dopinder and Leslie Uggams is returning to play his elderly roommate Blind Al comes news that two other veterans of the first two films will show up for the third.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

Deadline reports that Morena Baccarin, who plays Vanessa, an escort who falls in love with Deadpool‘s Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) prior to the disfiguring science experiment that turns him into the immortal superhero, and later becomes his fiancée, will now appear despite previous comments (see below).

She’s joined by Stefan Kapicic whose performance is enhanced with CGI to turn him into the stoic, powerful X-Men member Colossus, a frequent target of Deadpool’s mockery, but a reliable ally.

What had Morena Baccarin said about her return previously?

Baccarin returning to the fold is the one of interest here, since the actor appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast ‘Inside of You’ last week and expressed concern that her deal was not yet closed.

    Here’s what she said:

“Yeah, what is up with ‘Deadpool 3?’ That’s a really good question. I have to be very diplomatic about what I say here. I’d like to be in it. They have called me about being in it. Right now, we have not agreed on terms, and everybody’s trying their best, and doing their best. But it may or may not work out. I don’t know. I do think that this movie, since the acquirement of this Deadpool universe by Marvel/Disney, that merger that happened, I do feel like they’re trying to reinvent it a little bit. I think this movie is going to be much more about Wolverine and Deadpool.”

Whether or not her comments had any impact on her return will likely remain behind closed doors, but a least she’ll be back –– and hopefully not just killed for plot reasons as in the second movie.

Given that he’s spent the last few years around people who trade sweary insults and a powerful person named Logan thanks to his role as Tom Wambsgans on ‘Succession’, Matthew Macfadyen will probably have an easier time than some adapting to life in the ‘Deadpool’ movie universe than others.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

According to Deadline, the British actor is making a deal to join ‘Deadpool 3’ in an unspecified role. It marks the latest big gig for the actor, who has been one of the best things about ‘Succession’ in its run (and that’s saying something, given the powerhouse ensemble and top notch, spiky scripts). With the show now airing its final season, we can expect to see him picking up even more work, particularly since he scored an Emmy, a BAFTA and a host of other awards for his work on the series.

Yet ‘Deadpool 3’ is on a whole other level, calling back to a time when he was more regularly seen on the big screen. It already stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson and will feature Hugh Jackman playing the target of Wilson’s most meta attention, Wolverine.

Deadpool 3’ remains one of the most anticipated superhero movies in the works –– and with the film speeding towards pre-production ahead of a planned shoot in London this year, the stars of the movie are talking about it, including main man Ryan Reynolds and, most recently, his friend and ‘X-Men’ icon Hugh Jackman, who will show up as Logan AKA Wolverine in the story.

Interviewed by Le Parisien about his latest film, Florian Zeller drama ‘The Son’, Jackman dropped a tantalizing hint about the new movie, nodding towards the chance of more than one version of Wolverine.

    FW15JuJGFTtwqnkn4XqPf5

What did Hugh Jackman say about ‘Deadpool 3?’

“Yes, it will even be a dual role,” he said, which immediately sets the speculation machine into action, making us wonder whether he actually means a variant Wolverine (which wouldn’t surprise anyone given how many variant characters have cropped up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the last few years) or if he could actually be playing an entirely other character in the movie. Maybe even himself, to keep with the ‘Deadpool’ franchise’s history of meta references, particularly around Wolverine.

Jackman seems happy to be back at work with his buddy. This is what else he said about preparing for the film:

“Ryan and I have been friends for twenty years; we have a lot of fun together. We are filming this summer,” Jackman adds. “That’s why I’m so happy to be in Paris right now and to be able to enjoy French gastronomy. Because very soon, I’m going to have to put myself on a strict diet to remake my Wolverine body: steamed chicken and broccoli!”

We’ve been told more than once that the most antagonistic combination in ‘Deadpool 3’ is likely to be Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson (AKA the titular Deadpool) and his longtime obsession, Logan/Wolverine, played in a surprise return by Hugh Jackman.

The real life pals’ online rivalry will spill out into the movie as Jackman has promised that Wolverine will be no fan of Deadpool. But it appears they will also find common ground facing off against a bigger threat.

Deadline reports that Emma Corrin, who broke out playing Princess Diana on Season 4 of Royal Family drama ‘The Crown’, is set to play a villain in the new movie.

Naturally, no one is saying anything about the character so far, which means the internet is already frothily speculating on who they might play––especially if Team Deadpool is considering a Marvel Comics character. Emma Frost? Whoever they end up as, Corrin will bring quality to the role––they have also been seen in the likes of ‘My Policeman’ and Netflix’s recent adaptation of ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy––who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’––would be taking the reins on the new movie.

It’s exciting for Marvel fans, as this movie will mark the first time Deadpool will be properly in the MCU, and studio boss Kevin Feige is involved as one of its producers. Oh, so many targets for Deadpool to crack wise about…

Right now, ‘Deadpool 3’ is set for release on November 8th, 2024.

In related Corrin news, they have also landed another role (one which necessitated the ‘Deadpool’ team figuring out schedules before they could commit).

Corrin will be part of the cast for ‘The Northman’ director Robert Eggers’ take on classic vampire tale ‘Nosferatu’.

The new movie is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Lily-Rose Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Bill Skarsgård) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Nicholas Hoult and Willem Dafoe are also aboard the fanged film, though we don’t yet know exactly what they or Corrin will be playing.

Nosferatu’ is inspired by F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent horror feature of the same name. It was given that title, which is derived from an archaic Romanian name for vampire, following a copyright spat with the estate of Bram Stoker, the Irish novelist who wrote ‘Dracula’ in 1897. Murnau’s vampire was renamed Count Orlok.

Eggers, who also wrote the script, is scheduled to start shooting next month in Europe.

  • Movie Review: ‘Spirited’

Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell in 'Spirited,' premiering November 18, 2022 on Apple TV+.

Opening in theaters on November 11th before streaming on Apple TV+ November 118h is the new Christmas movie ‘Spirited’ from director Sean Anders (‘Daddy’s Home’).

The movie is yet another adaption of the Charles Dickens classic ‘A Christmas Carol,’ with Will Ferrell playing the role of Christmas Present. Considering retirement after the holidays, Present chooses to haunt Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds), an arrogant public relations executive who is completely aware of Dickens’ story and what is happening.

Briggs soon turns the tables on Present and instead forces him to examine his own past, present, and future, with the PR exec learning lessons himself along the way. Now Present must choose between his duties as a ghost and teaching Briggs a lesson, or finding true love with Briggs’ assistant, Kimberly (Octavia Spencer).

The result is a fun musical twist on ‘A Christmas Carol,’ with fantastic musical numbers created by ‘La La Land’s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, but the story drags with Ferrell and Reynolds basically just playing their ‘Elf’ and ‘Deadpool’ characters, respectively.

There have been many adaptions of Charles Dickens ‘A Christmas Carol’ over the years, including Billy Murray’s ‘Scrooged,’ ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol,’ and 2009’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey. ‘Spirited’ takes a fun crack at the material but is ultimately stronger as a musical than it is as a Dickens adaption.

In fact, the music is the real star of the movie, with great songs created by ‘The Greatest Showman’s Pasek and Paul. The musical numbers are also fun because the characters know they are in a musical, and for that matter, are also aware of all the ‘Christmas Carol’ adaptions of the past.

But again, this leads to a lot of ‘Deadpool’ breaking-the-forth-wall moments, which now seem tired with Reynolds involved. In fact, as entertaining as he is, Reynolds performance is very one-note and the actor is definitely leaning hard on his charming yet sarcastic public persona.

The same could be said for Will Ferrell, who while equally entertaining, is basically playing his “quiet to angry” character with the innocence of his ‘Elf’ role thrown in for good measure.

That being said, the two movie stars have great onscreen chemistry together and are most entertaining in their musical numbers. Surprisingly, both actors are quite impressive singing and dancing on screen to Pasek and Paul’s music.

It’s also worth mentioning that there is a clever twist to Dickens’ story regarding Ferrell’s character, which I won’t give away, but only say that the actor ends up playing two different characters. His “second role” is more of a stretch for the actor, and while he doesn’t have a lot of screen time as the other character, is completely believable in the role.

Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer shines in the film as both Reynold’s loyal assistant and Ferrell’s love interest. The actress brings a warmth to the film, has great chemistry with Ferrell in their romantic scenes, and also kills it in her musical numbers.

Other supporting performances worth mentioning include Sunita Mani, who is quite funny as the Ghost of Christmas Past. Broadway actor Patrick Page also gives a strong performance as Present’s boss, Jacob Marley, and as one can imagine, is very good in the musical numbers.

There are also a few fun cameos, that I will mention because they are hardly spoilers. Oscar-winner Judi Dench has a funny walk-on role as herself, while Rose Byrne is hilarious as one of Present’s successful hauntings, playing a nasty suburban housewife, aptly named “Karen.”

The screenplay by director Sean Anders and John Morris is very clever, even if it is retreading popular ‘A Christmas Carol’ tropes. While you can see many of the twists coming, it still feels like a fresh take, even if we’ve seen the basic story before.

Anders also does a fantastic job orchestrating the musical numbers, which are by far a highlight of the film. They really pop, not just with the music, but also the lighting, color palette, and the choreography. It’s like watching Christmas come alive on screen!

As far as ‘Christmas Carol’ adaptions go, ‘Spirited’ is at least an original take on the material and may someday be as beloved an adaption as ‘Scrooged’ and ‘The Muppet Christmas Carol,’ or even other Christmas movies like ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ or Ferrell’s ‘Elf.’ Time will only tell if ‘Spirited’ becomes a holiday film that is played at nauseam on cable TV like ‘A Christmas Story.’

But in the end, ‘Spirited’ is a fun holiday musical with a clever twist on the source material, and incredibly enjoyable songs written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

‘Spirited’ receives 3 out of 5 stars.

  • Hugh Jackman Talks About His Return as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine in director James Mangold’s ‘Logan.’

Ryan Reynolds, a man who knows something about using social media – or any media – to his advantage, made a big splash last month when he announced that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine for the third ‘Deadpool’ movie.

The movie has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds developing the script first alongside ‘Bob’s Burgers’ duo Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, and then with regular ‘Deadpool’ scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Adam Projectis on board to marshal the madness of a third outing for Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth.

But the idea that Wolverine would be part of that movie is something that Reynolds has been hoping for before any of that happened, as he explains in a new piece about Jackman in Variety. He approached Marvel boss Kevin Feige about Deadpool and more shortly after the Disney-Fox merger that saw Feige’s team reclaim hold of mutant characters such as the X-Men.

“I got Kevin to talk what, if anything, the future holds for Deadpool in that transaction,” Reynolds says. “The subject was coming up in the meeting about if we could find a way to do a Deadpool-Wolverine pairing. It wasn’t possible then. For this to be happening now is pretty damn exciting.”

Though Jackman had been insistent that 2017’s ‘Logan’ represented the last time he’d submit to the grueling training sessions and emotional work that comes with the character, he changed his mind after constant requests from his friend Reynolds and one particular moment.

“I went to a screening of ‘Deadpool.’ I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’” Jackman admits. “All I kept seeing in my head was ‘48 Hrs.’ with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here. A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it. Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character — more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.”

Reynolds is naturally happy that he’s finally been able to convince Jackman to come back. “Oh my God, I’m thrilled,” Reynolds explains. “It’s like old home week. To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that’s beyond our wildest dreams.”

How the pair will be brought together and what the story of ‘Deadpool 3’ is exactly, is being kept quiet for now. But the movie itself will be out on November 8th, 2024.
