  • ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Shatters Box Office Records Over Holiday Weekend

“Fifty Shades of Grey” was already on track for a huge box office haul, but the S&M-tinged book adaptation exceeded prognosticators’ wildest expectations, breaking several records along the way.

After the four-day holiday weekend, “Fifty Shades” is estimated to have pulled in $94.4 million domestically, a whopping total that far outpaces the previous four-day holiday weekend champ, “Valentine’s Day,” which nabbed $63.1 million back in 2010. And its $85 million three-day haul (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) beat out Mel Gibson’s 2004 epic “The Passion of the Christ” ($83.3 million) as the biggest February opening ever.

Those receipts also gave “Fifty Shades” the third-highest-grossing opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie. And overseas, the numbers were equally impressive: The flick nabbed $158 million in 58 countries over Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, making it the highest R-rated debut ever in foreign markets. “Fifty Shades” also grossed an estimated $14 million overseas on Monday, bumping up its international total to $172 million.

“This was unchartered territory,” said Universal domestic distribution chief Nicholas Carpou in a statement. “We created a perfect storm for Valentine’s Day weekend, and made a movie that was accessible to the widest audience. And the marketing campaign really empowered people to see the film.”

“Fifty Shades of Grey,” directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and based on the series by E.L. James, stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

It might not have always been easy, but Dakota Johnson has brought Anastasia Steele to life in the long-awaited adaptation, “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

A third-generation Hollywood starlet, Johnson got her start in Antonio Banderas’s directorial debut, “Crazy in Alabama” (1999), but it would be another decade before the young actress would return to acting. After graduating school, Johnson embraced the limelight and appeared in “The Social Network” (2010) opposite Justin Timberlake, making everyone ask, “Who is that girl?” Beginning this Friday, most of the world will know.

From her famous lineage to her unexpected airplane companion, here are 11 things you (probably) don’t know about Dakota Johnson.

  • The Two ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Sequels Are Happening

Brace yourself folks, preferably with some kind of high-grade leather whip: the two sequels to “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed,” are officially being developed as major motion pictures that film journalists everywhere will only have a cursory interest in seeing. According to MTV this bit of news was announced at a fan screening of the film held in New York on Friday morning, where director Sam Taylor-Johnson, author E.L. James, and stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan made an appearance. There were apparently gasps and screams of ecstasy from the audience.

The first adaptation of the trilogy, “Fifty Shades of Grey,” opens this weekend and has already reported record-breaking pre-release ticket sales. The film concerns the BDSM relationship between a young woman and a powerful millionaire (or something). This was the book that women everywhere were pretending was another book while reading it on the subway.

While Dornan and Johnson are locked into the three-movie deal, it’s unclear if Taylor-Johnson will return for the subsequent films given with how publicly she didn’t get along with author James on the first film (to the point where James overruled Taylor-Johnson’s preferred ending for the movie). It’s not like Dornan and Johnson have gotten along much better, but hey, that’s what ironclad contracts are for, right guys? Talk about bondage.

  • New ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Footage Pops Up in Ellie Goulding Soundtrack Cut (VIDEO)

New ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Footage Pops Up in Ellie Goulding Soundtrack Cut (VIDEO)

    Universal

British pop star Ellie Goulding hasn’t had a proper album released since 2012, but since then the artist has appeared on the soundtracks to “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” “The Host,” “About Time,” “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Divergent,” and, perhaps most memorably, over the closing credits to stone cold masterpiece “Spring Breakers.” Her latest contribution to her ever-growing soundtrack compendium is a new track for the hotly anticipated “Fifty Shades of Grey,” opening on February 13th.

The track, an unbelievably catchy number called “Love Me Like You Do,” has an accompanying music video and said music video features ballroom dancing, Goulding walking around in a black leather jacket, and, oh yeah, brand new footage from the movie (starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan). Don’t worry, it’s totally safe for work. The soundtrack, which also features cuts from The Weeknd, Annie Lennox, and Sia, will be out on February 10th.

  • Which Key Sex Scene Isn’t In ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’?

Fifty Shades of GreyThere is a lot of sex in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the book. There won’t be quite as much in “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the movie.

Though the idea of an NC-17 version floated around, the finished movie is rated R for “strong sexual content” and “unusual behavior.” And the script was even toned down from early drafts.

“There was a sense there was way too much sex,” director Sam Taylor-Johnson told Variety. “The story, of course, is of equal importance. We tried to balance the narrative correctly, so one doesn’t feel like it’s drowning the other.”

One infamous sex scene that stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson won’t be portraying? Let’s just say it involves a tampon. Including it “was never even discussed,” Taylor-Johnson revealed.

Though author E.L. James fought to include as many original details from her book as possible, she ultimately gave her thumbs up to the movie – even without all of the sex scenes.

“‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ is first and foremost a romantic love story,” she said, “and sex is only a part of that.”
