  • Is Channing Tatum Exiting ‘Gambit’? If So, Should Taylor Kitsch Return?

Channing Tatum looked so excited at San Diego Comic-Con as he joined the Marvel team to promote his upcoming role in “Gambit.” But now, just a month after the happy group photo below, rumors are swirling that Channing is leaving the movie:

According to TheWrap, quoting “an individual with knowledge of the situation,” Channing’s “Gambit” deal is in jeopardy of collapsing and he’s planning to exit the comic book movie. This source said Channing’s reps are still in active discussions with 20th Century Fox, but it’s supposedly known that “something is up.”

“Gambit” already has a release date of October 7, 2016, so if they lose Channing they either have to recast quickly or just take it off the schedule. Some fans think Taylor Kitsch should just come back as Gambit, since he had the role in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” But things are still in wait-and-see mode all around.

Would you be sorry to lose Channing or would it be no big deal to recast — with Taylor or someone else?

  • Behold Epic ‘Superhero Selfies’ With ‘X-Men,’ ‘Gambit,’ ‘Deadpool’ Casts

While David Ayer was mocking Marvel over at DC Comics’ “Suicide Squad” Comic-Con panel, the Marvel team took some epic shots of their own at the 20th Century Fox talk.

Check out Chris Hardwick’s photo with the great Stan Lee himself, backed by some familiar faces like Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Channing Tatum, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and more. As Chris noted: “Panel 10 – Hall H, @20thCenturyFoxPanel – I mean this HAS to be some kind of damn record. Most superheroes in one selfie? Casts of Wolverine, X-Men, Deadpool, Gambit, and Fantastic Four PLUS the Generalissimo!!!” You can quibble over whether this is really “selfie” or just a group photo but here’s the shot:

Channing Tatum tweeted his own version of the group photo, sharing his excitement to join the team as Gambit:

And here’s arguably the best shot, from 20th Century Fox:

So much awesome in one place. Sigh. FYI, io9 live-blogged the Fox panel if you want a play-by-play with screencaps, including lots of “X-Men Apocalypse” talk.

  • 5 Reasons Why ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Bombed at the Box Office

You know it’s a bad day in Hollywood when “Magic Mike XXL” can’t get a rise out of the box office.

The male-stripper sequel was expected to earn in the low $30 million range over the three-day holiday weekend, and hit somewhere around $45M for the five days since its debut on Wednesday. Instead, it opened in fourth place with an estimated Friday-to-Sunday haul of $12 million and $27.1 million for its first five days of release. That’s nearly 45 percent below the $49.6 million the original “Magic Mike” earned in its first five days in 2012. Ouch.

Another sequel, “Terminator Genisys,” also underperformed this weekend. The fifth film in the franchise opened in third with an estimated $28.7 million for the three-day weekend, and $44.2 million since its Wednesday debut. But at least those numbers were at the low end of what pundits had predicted. “Magic Mike XXL” wasn’t even in the ballpark.

Why did Channing Tatum and his team of male entertainers drop so fast and so far? Here are six likely reasons:

    1. Channing Tatum Can Be Hit or Miss
Is C. Tates a box office draw? Sure. A consistent one, though? Not so much.

Outside of “The Vow,” the first two “Jump Street” films and “Magic Mike,” Tatum seems unable to attract the level of box office that other A-Listers can. (We’re looking at you, “Jupiter Ascending.”) “XXL” was sold largely on his shoulders (and pecs and abs) alone, and they don’t seem muscular enough.

    2. The Female Appeal

That’s been the big box office story all year, starting with “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “Cinderella.” Indeed, exit polls show that 96 percent of “XXL’s ” audience were women. But it seems you have to have at least some men buying tickets to generate a hit, and “Magic Mike” had hardly any.

    3. Needs More Than Just Good Word-of-mouth

“Magic Mike XXL” earned a very good A- CinemaScore, suggesting that viewers would give the film strong recommendations to friends. But the film’s older audience relies on more than just word-of-mouth recommendations. These ticketbuyers still read reviews, and reviews for the sequel were decidedly mixed.

    4. That Big Drop Over the Weekend
Wednesday’s opening day triumph ($9.3 million) seemed to indicate that fans of the first “Mike” were really eager to see the sequel. Unfortunately, as with many franchise movies and genre films (especially horror), the die-hard fans are the only ones who feel compelled to see the film on opening day. And a troublesome 60 percent slide from Friday-to-Saturday all but underlines that point.

    5. July 4th Competition

Usually, Independence Day is a good weekend to open a movie; just ask Will Smith. But this year, July 4 fell on Saturday, so fireworks and barbecues cut into the heart of the moviegoing weekend. Plus, competition was especially stiff, not just from fellow newcomer “Genisys,” but also from unstoppable holdovers “Jurassic World” and “Inside Out.” The two box office hits nearly tied for first, even though they’ve already been in theaters for four weeks and three weeks, respectively.

But there is a silver lining (ish) here. Thanks to hits like “Jurassic World,” “Inside Out,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” this summer is running about 13 percent ahead of 2014, and only five percent behind 2013. But are these films, and December’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” enough to carry a whole year?

They’d better be, if the rest of 2015 turns out to be filled with miscalculations like “Magic Mike XXL.”

  • Conan O’Brien Crashed a ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Girls Night – and It Was Glorious

The petition for “Magic Conan” starts now!

If you think about it, a midnight showing of “Magic Mike XXL” might be a good place for a guy to find a date. Not that Conan O’Brien was going that route — even though the married man did take off his shirt and gyrate repeatedly for his assistant and her friends. He said the “Conan” staff were freaking out over the release of the “Magic Mike” sequel, so he decided to investigate by crashing a “girls night” midnight showing.

You have to watch it all play out in his 9 minute video, below.

All the ladies met at his assistant’s apartment so, in the dead of night, Conan led cameras to her door. “It’s like an episode of ‘COPS,’” he said, “only instead of arresting murderers I’m just hanging out with some women and seeing a movie.” He proceeded to make fun of their celeb crushes (Channing Tatum and Joe Manganiello), while pointing out that has has met those celebs. The conversation — consider it foreplay before the film — also included this question from Conan: “Raise your hand if you’d like if it you saw a penis. Be honest.” The whole size discussion was hilarious. Then Conan, clearly feeling the need to showcase his own masculinity, did some shirtless “Magic Mike” moves. Strangely, no one made the “woo!” noise for that, they just laughed and hid their faces.

At the theater, all the women in line chanted “Magic Mike!” so Conan did a little dance for them. Just watch and enjoy. Whatever you do, don’t miss the very end for a special cameo:

  • Channing Tatum Was Forced to Be G.I. Joe: ‘I F–king Hate That Movie’

Well, they say knowing is half the battle — and now you know the truth: Channing Tatum f–king hated “G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra.” He never wanted to be G.I. Joe. He’s embarrassed to have been a part of it. He only did the blockbuster because the studio would’ve sued him if he said no. So what you really need to know is not to sign long-term contracts unless you’re ready to sell out your dignity.

The topic came up when Channing was promoting “Magic Mike XXL” on Howard Stern’s show, and Howard brought up the millions than Chan’s “G.I. Joe” made. They noticed that Channing sounded embarrassed about it, and he admitted he was. Here’s his story:

Look, I’ll be honest. I f–-king hate that movie. I hate that movie. I was pushed into doing that movie. From ‘Coach Carter,’ they signed me for a three-picture deal. […] I’m sitting there and they give you the contract and they go, ‘Three-picture deal, here you go.’ And as a young [actor], you’re like, ‘Oh my god, yeah, that sounds amazing, I’m doing that!’ … Even the options go from X amount of money — it was like 60 grand to 80 grand to, like, 100 grand. I’m like ‘Oh my god that’s so much money.’ Even if I just got one other of those movies, I’m good. So time goes by and you get other jobs … and things happen and then you have a dream job that you want to go do. And the studio calls up and they’re like, ‘Hey, we’ve got a movie for you, we’re going to send it to you.’ And they send it to you. It was right during the writer’s strike and it’s G.I. Joe.”

He said he loves G.I. Joe but he wanted to play Snake Eyes. They said no, you have to be Duke. Howard Stern pointed out that so many people would be thrilled because it’s G.I. Joe and he got the lead role. But Channing continued…

The script wasn’t any good and I was like I don’t want to do something that — 1) I’m a fan of since I was a kid, I watched it every morning growing up. I didn’t want to do something that I thought was 1) bad, and 2) I just didn’t know if I wanted to be G.I. Joe.”

Howard pointed out that Mark Wahlberg was originally attached to “G.I. Joe” but he was considered too old for the role. Channing quipped that maybe he should’ve done his Mark Wahlberg impression to get out of it. But Howard loved the movie, and Channing admitted he was “super lucky and blessed to have been given that film” and it wasn’t really that bad. But he only did it because of his contractual obligation. (That happens a lot.)

Check out more clips from the show over here. Chan just opened up on all kinds of subjects — including how Emilia Clarke (the Khaleesi on “Game of Thrones”) offered herself to Channing and his wife for a threesome. That would be Dracarys as hellllll!

  • Elizabeth Banks Wants Some Sugar From Channing Tatum in ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Clip

Magic Mike XXLThe men of “Magic Mike XXL” are ready to show us a little … um, magic … but only if they can satisfy Elizabeth Banks.

Warner Bros. released a clip from the stripper movie, and sadly, it features nary a shirtless guy. No pelvic thrusts. No body rolls. (Sob!) Instead, the clip is all business, as Mike (Channing Tatum), Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello), and crew roll up to a stripping convention run by Banks, hoping to get some showtime.

“Are you even in shape?” she wonders, noting Mike’s been out of the game for awhile. And do they have the most important thing — an MC?

We’re always happy to see Banks in anything, and it’s fun to see her playing a slightly trashy, bleached blonde. But come on, “Magic Mike XXL,” you couldn’t throw us an (ab) bone? Just a peek?

“Magic Mike XXL” also stars Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Amber Heard, and Jada Pinkett Smith, and opens in theaters July 1.

  • Rupert Wyatt to Direct Channing Tatum in ‘Gambit’

"The Gambler" New York PremiereChanning Tatum‘s upcoming “X-Men” spinoff, “Gambit,” has had some trouble snagging a director, but now, it looks like that position has finally been filled.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Rupert Wyatt, who directed reboot “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” has been tapped to helm the film, which focuses on the New Orleans-born mutant. Tatum is taking over the role from Taylor Kitsch, who appeared as Gambit in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” This will be the card-throwing character’s first solo flick.

Tatum had long desired to see Gambit get his big screen due, though a movie took some time to materialize. First, the studio needed to sign on; then, the flick floundered for months without a director (and was reportedly rejected by high-profile people including Darren Aronofsky and Tatum’s “Foxcatcher” director Bennett Miller). But now, it seems that Wyatt is at the helm, and work can finally start on the feature, which is due in theaters later next year.

No official word has come down from studio Fox yet. Stay tuned to see what they have to say about Wyatt (and perhaps the rest of the cast).

“Gambit” is slated for release on October 7, 2016.

  • Channing Tatum & ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Cast Dance at L.A. Pride Parade

The Los Angeles Pride Parade attracted some major talent this weekend, but one float in particular had everyone talking.

Channing Tatum and his “Magic Mike XXL” costars Matt Bomer and Adam Rodriguez — joined by a bevy of attractive males — rode a giant float decked out in promotional materials for the upcoming sequel to the male stripper flick. Tatum was also sporting a rainbow flag bandana and wristband for the occasion.

But as soon as Ginuwine’s “Pony” began to play — a signature song for the “Magic Mike” franchise — things really heated up, as Tatum and co. began to gyrate with the music, putting on quite the show for the excited onlookers at the event. (A special shout-out to the gentleman on his knees, rippling his stomach to the beat. Yowza.)

This is just the latest publicity stunt for the flick, which has also promoted itself through a surprise lap-dance performance for a group of fans (led by a disguised Tatum). We’re eager to see what else the marketing team has up its sleeve as the countdown to film’s debut continues.

Check out some video of the parade performance, and a few more photos, below. “Magic Mike XXL” dances into theaters on July 1.

  • Disguised Channing Tatum Pranks Fans at ‘Magic Mike XXL’ Screening

26th Annual GLAAD Media Awards - ArrivalsThe old adage “never judge a book by its cover” came into play for a group of “Magic Mike” fans during a recent screening of the flick’s sequel, when star Channing Tatum donned a disguise to prank the unsuspecting filmgoers.

In a video posted to his Facebook page in support of an Omaze campaign, Tatum sat in a makeup chair and transformed into “Scott,” a balding, bearded, bespectacled marketing rep for studio Warner Bros. Adopting a southern drawl, Tatum asked attendees at a “Magic Mike XXL” screening a series of ridiculous questions about the first flick, ranging from which parts they wished had been in 3D (“The pelvic thrusting,” one woman eagerly replied) to if they actually cared about the story (a resounding “no”).

Fans were obviously a bit skeptical of his queries (a question about “Magic Mike”‘s accuracy vs. real male strippers produced some particularly amusing responses), but were quickly won over when the marketer promised attendees a “3D experience.” That experience morphed into an actual striptease performed by a gaggle of gorgeous guys, who pulled Scott up onstage to unmask Tatum.

Check out the video below, which is worth it for the crowd’s over-the-top enthusiasm as Tatum’s ruse is uncovered. (A special shout-out to hyperbolic woman who said that after Tatum twerked on her, she “pretty much reached peak life.”)

  • ’21 Jump Street’ Getting Female Spinoff, ‘Men in Black’ Crossover

The success of “21 Jump Street” and its sequel, “22 Jump Street,” signified that this franchise would continue to grow, and now, two new reports reveal that there are two more “Jump” flicks in the works: a spinoff and a surprising crossover.

The first was Broad City” writers and producers Lucia Aniello and Paul Downs attached to write the screenplay. No details about a possible plot (or who may star) were provided.

TheWrap followed up with its own report, writing that Sony is hoping to replicate its “Jump Street” success with the female-led flick, which will “feature the same comedic tone” as its predecessors. In addition to that project, an even more intriguing one is on the horizon for the brand.

According to TheWrap’s report, the third film in the original “Jump” franchise — to again feature leads Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill — will actually be a crossover flick with the “Men in Black” franchise. Much like the first two films made fun of reboots and sequels, respectively, “the next ‘Jump Street’ movie will send-up the current trend of Shared Movie Universes by having Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum enter the ‘Men in Black’ universe and investigate aliens,” the trade writes.

It sounds pretty strange, but then again, so did a “21 Jump Street” reboot, and we all know how that worked out. Stay tuned to see how all this moves forward.
