  • Golden Globes 2016: Presenters Include Mel Gibson, Channing Tatum

NIDA Graduate School Launch - ArrivalsThe list of presenters for this coming Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony has been trickling out this week, with the first set of names including past winners, stars of current and upcoming big projects, and — Mel Gibson?

At first glance, Gibson is a head-scratching addition to the telecast, though his involvement may be a nostalgia nod: He’s most likely going to present the highlight reel for Best Drama nominee “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Gibson starred as the titular hero in the original trilogy of “Max” films, which first debuted in 1979.

In addition to Gibson, the other big names that will be handing out trophies this weekend include Amy Adams, Jaimie Alexander, Patricia Arquette, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Amber Heard, Bryce Dallas Howard, Kate Hudson, Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Kurt Russell, J.K. Simmons, Channing Tatum, and Olivia Wilde.

Expect more presenters to be added to this list as the week continues. The 2016 Golden Globes, hosted by returning emcee Ricky Gervais, air Sunday, January 10 on NBC.

  • Johnny Depp Is 2015’s Most Overpaid Actor, According to Forbes

Premiere Of Lionsgate's "Mortdecai" - ArrivalsJohnny Depp may have stored up lots of moviegoing goodwill thanks to his iconic work as Captain Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, but that sentiment didn’t translate into box office dollars in 2015: Depp’s inability to earn much money at the multiplex this year has earned him the dubious title of Hollywood’s most overpaid actor.

Forbes put out its annual list of overpaid performers this week, and Depp’s 2015 numbers are especially dismal (yes, even for the star of notorious flop “The Lone Ranger“): According to the magazine, Depp made only $1.20 for every $1 he was paid for films including “Mortdecai” and “Transcendence,” which earned just $47 million and $100 million, respectively. (For comparison, Chris Evans returned $181.80 for every dollar he took home in 2015, making him Hollywood’s best bargain, according to Forbes.)

While 2016 does look brighter for Depp (he has another “Pirates” flick on the horizon, as well as “the Alice in Wonderland” sequel “Through the Looking Glass“), he still has to worry about the underwhelming box office for “Black Mass,” which may mar his numbers next year. (Forbes looked at each actor’s three most recent wide-release films that debuted before June 2015 for its list, meaning “Black Mass” will be eligible for Depp’s 2016 calculation.)

The rest of Forbes’s list is peppered with similarly-big name stars, including Denzel Washington, Will Ferrell, and Will Smith. The full top 10 most overpaid list is below.

Hollywood’s Most Overpaid Actors of 2015:

    1. Johnny Depp ($1.20 for every $1 paid)
    2. Denzel Washington ($6.50 for every $1 paid)
    3. Will Ferrell ($6.80 for every $1 paid)
    4. Liam Neeson ($7.20 for every $1 paid)
    5. Will Smith ($8.60 for every $1 paid)
    6. Christian Bale ($9.20 for every $1 paid)
    7. Channing Tatum ($10.80 for every $1 paid)
    8. Brad Pitt ($12 for every $1 paid)
    9. Ben Affleck ($12.30 for every $1 paid)
    10. Tom Cruise ($13.60 for every $1 paid)

  • Channing Tatum Is Elsa From ‘Frozen’ in New ‘Lip Sync Battle’

Yeah, we wanna build a snowman, but we also wanna see “Lip Sync Battle.” Season 2 starts Thursday, January 7 on Spike, and the network just shared a promo for the “Tatum Takedown” with Chan and Jenna Dewan-Tatum — including Channing as Elsa from “Frozen.” The cold never bothered him anyway!

“I just really hope our marriage isn’t over after tonight,” Channing says in the trailer, which promotes the husband vs. wife showdown. Jenna tells her hubby, “We’re a house divided at the moment. We’re going to war.”

Channing and Jenna met while making the dance movie “Step Up,” and even though Chan is the bigger celebrity right now, Jenna is the real dance pro. This could be close … unless the winner is determined by who looks the most ridiculous. Then it’s definitely Chan’s trophy. Just watch:

The promo teases “a full hour of big performances and special guests,” and it has already been confirmed that Beyoncé will be performing alongside Chan. With the power of Queen Bey and Queen Elsa, is there any way he can lose?

  • Best of Late Night TV: Channing Tatum’s Hateful Kitten Rant and The Victoria’s Secret Angels’ Buffalo Wing Eating Session

If you’re like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered. Here’s the best of what happened last night on late night.

The Late Late Show.” So, how do you get Queen Bey to sing mere backup on your song? You wander over to her castle, wait for a week, get fed “minimally,” and are forced to interact with Destiny’s Child. This, from Chris Martin.

Over on “The Tonight Show,” The Late Show,” and they broke into a full-blown song and dance routine. (Dance = swaying weirdly at a desk). Their bromance is real, guys.
More importantly, a bunch of Victoria’s Secret Angels (Adriana Lima included) showed up on “The Late Show” and ate a giant plate of buffalo wings. And yes, they used their actual wings as napkins.

Finally, Channing Tatum said eight hateful things to an innocent kitten. That is all.

  • Doug Liman May Step in to Direct Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’

"Edge Of Tomorrow" New York PremiereChanning Tatum has been interested in making “X-Men” spinoff “Gambit” for years, but apparently, not everyone in Hollywood shares his vision. The flick had a hard time securing a director, and when it finally did, he bailed on the job. Now, it appears that a replacement has been selected.

The Hollywood Reporter writes that Doug Liman is the new top choice for the directing gig, and is currently in final negotiations to take over from the recently-departed Rupert Wyatt. Liman has plenty of experience in the action genre, helming 2014’s “Edge of Tomorrow” and past hits including “The Bourne Identity” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.”

While THR notes that those latter two films had trouble-laden shoots, both were big hits with critics and audiences alike. And according to the trade, Liman reportedly has a close relationship with “Gambit” producer Simon Kinberg, who will help steer the proceedings.

It’s basically do or die at this point for “Gambit,” which has a late 2016 release date looming. Wyatt said he left the project over scheduling issues, but THR reports that he really had creative differences with the studio. Here’s hoping Liman doesn’t have any such issues, otherwise this mutant might have to be put down.

“Gambit” is due in theaters — for now — on October 7, 2016.

  • Here’s the Star-Studded First ‘Hail Caesar!’ Trailer

hail caesar, hail caesar trailer, channing tatum, coen brothersThe first trailer for “Hail Caesar!,” the latest offering from the Coen Brothers, is here, and is stuffed with enough stars to make you dizzy.

The flick is meta from the get-go, focusing on a movie studio making a big-budget spectacle called — you guessed it — “Hail Caesar!” The film-within-the-film is led by the biggest movie star in the world, Baird Whitlock, played by — you guessed it — the actual biggest movie star in the world, George Clooney.

With Whitlock on board for the epic in size, scope, and budget “Caesar!,” the studio stands to make big bank — that is, until Whitlock is kidnapped by a mysterious group that calls itself The Future, right in the midst of shooting. The studio needs to cover up its star’s disappearance to avoid negative press, while also desperately searching for the man, who wakes up dazed and confused — and still wearing his gladiator costume — in a stranger’s home.

“Hail Caesar!” is a veritable who’s who of Hollywood, including Scarlett Johansson, Channing Tatum, Josh Brolin, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, Frances McDormand, and Tilda Swinton, among many, many others. And based on this trailer, it seems like classic Coen cinema: funny with an edge.

“Hail Caesar!” is due in theaters on February 5, 2016.

  • Will Rogue Appear in ‘Gambit’? Anna Paquin Weighs In

anna paquin, rogue, x-menNot much is known yet about the plot of Channing Tatum‘s upcoming “X-Men” spinoff flick, “Gambit,” including whether or not fellow mutant Rogue will make an appearance. Now, actress Anna Paquin, who plays Rogue in the series, may have an answer.

In a Twitter exchange with fans earlier this week, Paquin was asked point-blank whether or not she will be in “Gambit.” Paquin’s response? A simple “no.”

But when the media ran with that quote, stating definitively that Paquin wouldn’t be in the flick, the actress backtracked a bit, updating Twitter once more to clarify that her statement “wasn’t a press release” and that she just supplied “the information that I currently have.” So does that mean that she will appear in the movie after all?

Maybe, but probably not. SlashFilm has a good analysis of how the films’ timelines make it seem unlikely that Paquin would star in “Gambit,” because if that flick is set in the 1980s (which is the rumor right now), then Rogue would be only a baby, according to the chronology of the existing movies. That means, obviously, that she can’t be a love interest for Tatum’s Gambit, like she is in the “X-Men” comic stories; plus, with the addition of Lea Seydoux to the cast as Bella Donna Boudreaux, the love interest angle is already covered.

Of course, the plot for “Gambit” may not be set in stone yet, especially considering the film’s behind-the-scenes woes. It has an October 2016 release date, but its director, Rupert Wyatt, just suddenly left the project, and no replacement has been named yet. Production was also pushed from this fall to next March, another sign that the creative side has some issues.

So Paquin-as-Rogue may yet fit into this version of Gambit’s story; it’s all a bit up in the air at this point. As Paquin herself noted, things may change, so stay tuned.

  • Director Rupert Wyatt Leaves Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit.’ What Now?

"The Gambler" New York PremiereChanning Tatum‘s “X-Men” spinoff flick, “Gambit,” has just experienced another setback: Its director, Rupert Wyatt, has left the project.

Deadline reports that Wyatt chose to exit the film due to a scheduling conflict: The flick was initially set to start shooting in New Orleans in November, but studio Fox changed the start date to March, clashing with Wyatt’s schedule.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project,” Wyatt said in a statement explaining his exit. “I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

According to Deadline, “There are rumors that there was some disagreement over script and budget” that prompted Wyatt to bail on the production, though the “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” helmer has lots of buzz around him, so the scheduling excuse could indeed be a valid one.

Still, it’s the latest problem plaguing the “Gambit” production, after the flick took forever to find a director in the first place. Wyatt seemed like a solid choice, but after so many people reportedly rejected the project, who’s going to fill in now? And can Fox find them in time for the flick to make its March start date (and October 2016 release date)?

    Stay tuned.

  • Channing Tatum Will Play Gambit After All (Sorry, Taylor Kitsch Fans)

So now it’s kind of awkward. Last week, TheWrap had a story saying Channing Tatum may not play superhero “Gambit” because his deal was potentially falling apart. They noted that a decision would have to be made quickly, since “Gambit” already had a release date, etc. It prompted the Taylor Kitsch fans who loved him in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” to jump in and say he should just get the role back. But never mind, because now it’s official that Channing is going to be Gambit, and it sounds like he was never not going to be Gambit, he just had to finish his negotiations.

Here are some big picture details from The Hollywood Reporter:

One thing that needed figuring out was the extent of Tatum’s involvement in the X-Men universe. Fox sees Tatum’s Gambit, a mutant who harnesses kinetic energy, as one of the anchor characters of the X-universe, akin to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, someone who would anchor his own movies and appear in numerous others. It’s a commitment that could theoretically last more than a decade. (Jackman has been portraying Wolverine since 2000, for instance.)

Sources say that backend compensation was also a sticking point.

So if these movies — however many he makes as Gambit — make serious coin, Chan needs to be shown the money. But it is a bit awkward now, considering how many fans were fine — even happy! — about the idea of Channing dropping out, because they don’t see him as a good Gambit. Then again, it’s rare for fans to be 100 percent supportive of casting, especially comic book casting. Channing is a charmer and he’ll probably win everyone over, we just have to wait and see.

  • ‘Ghostbusters’ Producer Issues (Confusing) Clarification on New Movies

All this back and forth about a possible “Ghostbusters” franchise beyond the upcoming reboot has gotten really confusing. It’s dogs and cats living together — mass hysteria! We know the Paul Feig movie with Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth is now filming for a release next year, and there were rumors that a second movie was coming with a male cast (possibly including Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt). But that second movie may not really be happening. Unless it is happening? See if you can follow along…

Here’s part of what “Ghostbusters” producer Ivan Reitman told Deadline back in March:

We want to expand the Ghostbusters universe in ways that will include different films, TV shows, merchandise, all things that are part of modern filmed entertainment. This is a branded entertainment, a scary supernatural premise mixed with comedy. Paul Feig’s film will be the first version of that, shooting in June to come out in July 2016. He’s got four of the funniest women in the world, and there will be other surprises to come. The second film has a wonderful idea that builds on that. Drew will start writing and the hope is to be ready for the Russo Brothers’ next window next summer to shoot, with the movie coming out the following year. It’s just the beginning of what I hope will be a lot of wonderful movies.”

That “Drew” is writer Drew Pearce, and Channing and his partner Reid Carolin were meant to produce with Channing maybe playing one of the upcoming Ghostbusters and Joe and Anthony Russo looking to direct and produce.

    But not so fast!

In late June, Reid Carolin shot down the “Ghostbusters” idea for himself and Channing, telling Screen Rant, “We’re not doing that anymore. I think it’s too complicated. There’s a lot of things going on with that brand and I just feel like it’s over-saturated.” And starring in the movie was apparently news to Chris Pratt, who told GQ, “No one has ever even spoken to me about that. Never. I’ve even seen Channing a couple times. As far as I know, that’s complete bulls–t.”

So, perhaps because of that, Ivan Reitman returned with a new statement to try and clear up all the talk:

There has been a lot of excitement recently about what is happening with the ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise. As the producer of the new ‘Ghostbusters’ film, I feel the need to clarify. There is only one new ‘Ghostbusters’ movie and that is the Paul Feig directed version coming next July, presently filming and going fantastically. The rest is just noise.”

As Coming Soon noted, along with that statement came a message from the Montecito Picture Company clarifying that “before Feig’s reboot was greenlit, several writing teams were engaged by Sony to present different pitches, with the Pearce/Russos/Pratt/Tatum venture likely one of them, although no formal conversations ever took place.”

But here’s where it gets even more confusing. Writer Drew Pearce just talked to MTV about the second “Ghostbusters” script in a new July 29 report:

I’ve finished my work on that in the last couple weeks. Obviously it’s top secret, but there’s a gigantic bold idea that I came up with, and the Russo brothers — who did ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ and are doing ‘Civil War’ at the moment — and Ivan Reitman, who did the original movie, are going to take that and run with it. Obviously I cannot tell you what it is, but hopefully in one year’s time you’ll know!”

He also discussed the rumored leads, Chris Pratt and Channing Tatum:

That’s definitely the cast we’ve been thinking about as we approach the project. Whether that happens or not is very much above my pay grade. It’s just my job to give them something exciting that maybe they’ll do.”

So maybe the clarification is that nothing is solid yet on a second movie, and maybe Chris Pratt hadn’t even been asked because it was too soon to even make that call. Channing may not even do “Gambit” so “Ghostbusters” could be off his acting table too. We’ll see.

Do you hope they do go ahead with another “Ghostbusters” movie after this new one? Too soon to say?
