    British Lion Films

The 1976 cult classic movie “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” which starred David Bowie in his first film role, is getting a television remake.

CBS All-Access ordered the project from “Star Trek: Discovery”  and “Picard” producer Alex Kurtzman, who will serve as co-showrunner with Jenny Lumet.

“The Man Who Fell to Earth” follows an alien who arrives on Earth at a turning point in human evolution and must confront his own past to determine humankind’s future.

The 1976 film was based on a 1963 novel by Walter Tevis.

“Walter Tevis’ visionary novel gave us a tech god Willy Wonka from another planet, brought to life by David Bowie’s legendary performance, that foretold Steve Jobs’ and Elon Musk’s impacts on our world,” said Kurtzman and Lumet.

“The series will imagine the next step in our evolution, seen through the eyes of an alien who must learn what it means to become human, even as he fights for the survival of his species.”

The producers were inspired by the late Steve Jobs. Lumet said, ““We were thinking about the day 12 years ago when Steve Jobs took the stage and introduced the iPhone and it fundamentally changed how we live and communicate and Alex says, ‘What if he’s an alien?’ Here we are where we’ve never been more connected but never been further apart.”

Kurtman explained that the series is designed to run for a minimum of three seasons, with the first season focusing on the alien’s ascension to the head of a tech company.

    HBO

The upcoming limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand” is getting a new ending — from the author himself.

The CBS All-Access project also added four actors to the cast in key roles, including James Marsden and Amber Heard.

“The Stand” is set in a world decimated after an apocalyptic pandemic and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil. The fate of mankind rests on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail and a handful of survivors. But they must contend with a man of unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.

King will write the show’s finale episode, which will include “a new coda that won’t be found in the book” that will reveal more about what happened to the survivors.

As for the new cast members, they are led by “Westworld” star Marsden, who will portray Stu Redman, “an ordinary working-class factory man in an extraordinary situation with a damaged quality to him that belies his exterior.”

“Aquaman” star Heard will play Nadine Cross, “a deeply conflicted woman who feels the consequences of her actions, but is still compelled by her allegiance to Randall Flagg, the Dark Man.”

Odessa Young (“A Million Little Pieces”) will play Frannie Goldsmith, “a pregnant young woman navigating a strange new world, who also has the foresight to recognize that there is evil lurking beyond the Dark Man.”

Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”) will portray Nick Andros, “a young deaf and mute man who finds himself in a position of authority when the unthinkable happens. He has a habit of risking his own well-being for the safety of others.”

No premiere date has been set by CBS All-Access.

  • James Marsden Will Lead Cast of CBS’s ‘The Stand’ Miniseries

James Marsden Will Lead Cast of CBS’s ‘The Stand’ Miniseries

    HBO

Casting is underway for CBS All Access’s 10-episode adaptation of Stephen King‘s post-apocalyptic epic “The Stand,” with some big names reportedly close to signing on the dotted line.

Deadline reports that James Marsden (Teddy Flood  on “Westworld”) will play Stu Redman, the first man who’s immune to the virus that’s ravaged the planet. He eventually becomes the leader who confronts the evil Randall Flagg. Gary Sinise memorably played Stu in the 1994 ABC miniseries.

According to Collider, here’s who’s currently in various stages of negotiations for other key roles:

Amber Heard (“Aquaman”): Nadine Cross, a school teacher who becomes obsessed with Flagg. Laura San Giacomo played Nadine in 1994.

    •  Whoopi Goldberg: Mother Abagail, who is immune to the superflu and claims to be a prophet of God. Ruby Dee originated the character.

Greg Kinnear: Glen Bateman, an arthritic professor who joins Stu on his journey to meet Mother Abagail. Glen was played by Ray Walston in the ABC miniseries.

Odessa Young (“Assassination Nation“): Frannie Goldsmith, a pregnant woman who leaves her devastated community and ends up falling in love with Stu. Molly Ringwald played her in the 1994 miniseries.

Henry Zaga (“Teen Wolf”):  Nick Andros, a young, deaf-mute grifter who wears an eye patch for most of the book. Rob Lowe played him in 1994.

Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”) and Ben Cavell (“SEAL Team”) adapted King’s novel and Boone will also direct and produce.

“I’m excited and so very pleased that ‘The Stand’ is going to have a new life on this exciting new platform,” King said earlier this year. “The people involved are men and women who know exactly what they’re doing; the scripts are dynamite. The result bids to be something memorable and thrilling. I believe it will take viewers away to a world they hope will never happen.”

No names were mentioned to play the villainous Flagg, who was played by Jamey Sheridan in the 1994 miniseries.

A representative for CBS All Access refused comment to Collider on this casting list.

    ABC/CBS

We’re getting our first look at the characters of “Why Women Kill,” the CBS All Access drama from “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry.

The 10-episode stars Ginnifer Goodwin (“Once Upon a Time”), Lucy Liu (“Elementary”) and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“The Good Place,” “Downward Dog”) as three women who live in the same house in different decades — and who all contemplate murder.

    CBS

Ginnifer Goodwin will play Beth Ann, a woman aspiring to be the ideal housewife in 1963. Per CBS, “She is kind, cheerful and warm. But if you get too close, you start to see that she wears a mask to hide her pain. Beth Ann’s whole world revolves around her husband, and so she is understandably defensive and immediately in denial when told Rob is having an affair. Determined to learn the sordid details for herself, Beth Ann is in for a life-changing shift of perspective.”

    CBS

Liu is Simone, an elegant, stylish ’80s woman who’s the picture of urbane confidence. She’s seemingly happily married to her indulgent husband, Karl, But she’s devastated when she learns Karl is cheating on her.

    CBS

Howell-Baptiste’s character is Taylor, whose story takes place in 2018. She’s a fiercely intelligent lawyer whose husband is content to play beta to her alpha. She’s also upfront about being bisexual, and she and Eli have an open marriage, which, so far, seems to be working. Until, we guess, it doesn’t.

“Why Women Kill” is Cherry’s follow-up to “Devious Maids,” which ran for four seasons on Lifetime.

  • ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser Trailer Explores Patrick Stewart’s Retirement Years

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Teaser Trailer Explores Patrick Stewart’s Retirement Years

    CBS

“Why did you leave Starfleet, Admiral?”

That chilling question lingers over the first teaser trailer for “Star Trek: Picard,” the upcoming CBS All-Access series that brings back Patrick Stewart as the venerated leader who once captained the Enterprise on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

The teaser is comprised of sun-dappled footage from Picard’s winery, where he has retired after his space-exploring career. But in voiceover, a woman wonders what an “unimaginable” tragedy cost Picard. “Your faith in us? Your faith in yourself?”

Showrunner Alex Kurtzman has described the series as a contemplative character study. “What happens when circumstances have conspired to not give him the happiest of endings?” he told the L.A. Times. “Hopefully, it’s a reinforcement of [“Star Trek” creator Gene] Roddenberry’s vision of optimism. He’s going to have to go through deep valleys to get back to the light.”

“Star Trek: Picard” does not yet have a premiere date.

“Star Trek: Picard” is ready to engage.

CBS All-Access announced the official title of the upcoming series starring Patrick Stewart as his iconic “The Next Generation” captain, Jean-Luc Picard.

The title is simple and straightforward: “Star Trek: Picard.”

Stewart played the wise and inspiring leader on the syndicated TV series from 1987 to 1994, then in four feature films.

Not much is known about the story of the new show, aside from following Picard in the next stage of his life. Showrunner Alex Kurtzman has said it will be “extremely different” from previous series, including its CBS All-Access sibling “Discovery.”

“‘Discovery’ is a bullet. ‘Picard’ is a very contemplative show,” he explained. “It will find a balance between the speed of ‘Discovery’ and the nature of what ‘Next Gen’ was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm.”
