“The job of the production designer is to build the world that the film takes place in,” says “Ant-Man’s” production designer Shepherd Frankel. From ant tunnels to inside of a vacuum cleaner, the larger than life environments seen in “Ant-Man” were real, full size and shot with macro-photography techniques. Frankel began his career path in production by by using his education in architecture for filmmaking. “In a three month period, more architecture that I thought was interested was being put together on a soundstage… I knew at that moment I wanted to be a great production designer.” (1009-2)

When the team behind “Ant-Man” wanted to celebrate the release of the film on DVD, they needed to do it in a big way. So they looked to Ultra Productions–a company that brought to life “Ant-Man’s” world to an epic scale. “We specialize in the impossible and the spectacle of the whole movie magic around us,” Maximillian Castillo, CEO of Ultra Productions, tells Made in Hollywood. For the DVD launch, Ultra Productions created a giant-sized coffee mug, spoon and sugar cubes. “What we do is create experiences so that people can touch and feel and experience the movie.” (1009-3)

  • Peyton Reed May Return to Direct ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’

Marvel's "Ant-Man" - European Premiere - Red Carpet ArrivalsThe sequel to “Ant-Man” is still a few years away, but the flick may have already found its director — and it’s a familiar face.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peyton Reed, who helmed the first film, is currently in negotiations to direct the follow-up, “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” too. The news comes fresh off the heels of the sequel getting a release date, which will be part of the Phase 3 slate of MCU films.

There are no writers attached yet, though based off the flick’s title, it will focus more heavily on Evangeline Lilly‘s character, The Wasp. Lilly and star Paul Rudd are set to return for the sequel, and Rudd will once again reprise the character in “Captain America: Civil War,” which is due in theaters in May 2016.

After all the upheaval behind the scenes with the first “Ant-Man” flick — including original writer-director Edgar Wright abruptly leaving the project — we can’t imagine that the Marvel studio heads would risk ruffling any more feathers by bringing in someone other than Reed for the job. We expect that he’ll be back for round two.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Coming to Theaters in 2018

Ant-Man“Ant-Man” is getting a sequel, but the pint-sized superhero won’t be its only star.

Marvel announced the sequel’s surprising title, “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” as well as the movie’s release date — July 6, 2018. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” will arrive right in the middle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase 3.”

This will be the first Marvel film with a female character in the title. Marvel has come under some criticism for a lack of female-centric movies; their first solo female superhero film, “Captain Marvel,” which was slated for July 2018, is now hitting theaters in March 2019.

The addition of the Wasp to the “Ant-Man” sequel title indicates how popular Hope Van Dyne, played by Evangeline Lilly, was. It also hints at her increased importance in the future storyline. In a scene during the end credits, Hope was presented with the Wasp costume by her father, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).

Ant-Man himself (Paul Rudd) will appear in “Captain America: Civil War,” to pave the way for the character to join the new Avengers team. The sequel’s scheduling right after “Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1” leads us to wonder if the Wasp might become part of that crew, too.

  • ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Surges to $60 Million Opening

    straight

The hip-hop biopic “Straight Outta Compton” beat all expectations to debut with $60 million at the box office, according to Sunday estimates.

The film about the emergence of N.W.A. rap stars Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E became the biggest R-rated opener in August, topping “American Pie 2,” and left “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” far behind in third place with $13.5 million.

“The movie tapped into something in our culture and that made it more of a must-see,” Phil Contrino, vice president and chief analyst at BoxOffice.com, tells Variety. Weekend estimates of a $56.1 million opening were upgraded to $60 million by Monday.

The movie also benefited from good reviews, the viral success of the “Straight Outta …” meme, aggressive marketing, and the huge social media followings by the rap artists.

“Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” kept rolling in second place with $17 million in its third week. “Fantastic Four” plummeted 69 percent in its second week to collect $8 million in fourth while “The Gift” showed some staying power with $6.5 million in the fifth slot.

“Ricki and the Flash” also lost only about a third of its audience in week two, coming in behind “Ant-Man,” “Vacation” and “Minions” in ninth place. “Trainwreck” was 10th.

  • ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’ Opens with $56 Million at Box Office

    tombikeMission: Accomplished.

Tom Cruise and his Impossible Mission Force bested already-high expectations to debut atop the U.S. box office this weekend with $56 million, according to estimates Sunday.

That gave “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” one of the best three-day openings of the five movies in the franchise and restored the 53-year-old Cruise to bankable action star status with his third-best debut after “Mission: Impossible II” and “War of the Worlds.”

Despite opening two days earlier on Wednesday, “Vacation” fell short of projections to finish with $21.2 million over the five-day period, though the Ed Helms-starring film’s modest $30 million should ensure that the raunchy comedy ends in the black.

Returnees “Ant-Man” and “Minions” followed with $12 million-plus each while “Pixels” petered out with $10.4 million and “Paper Towns” fizzled with $4.6 million.

  • ‘Ant-Man’ Tops ‘Pixels’ and ‘Southpaw’ Has Punch at Box Office

You know that sound the ghosts make when Pac-Man eats them? That just happened at the box office this weekend for “Pixels.”

The critically panned Adam Sandler movie about vintage video games going crazy opened to a tepid $24 million to fall into second place behind holdover “Ant-Man” with Paul Rudd, which collected $24.9 million in its second week, according to final numbers Monday.

“Paper Towns” also debuted weakly with only $12.7 million, well under estimates for the John Green adaptation that some thought could have topped $20 million on the strength of the author’s popularity and the carry-over goodwill from the Green-to-screen hit “The Fault in Our Stars.”

“I’m really somewhat mystified,” Chris Aronson, domestic distribution head at 20th Century Fox, which released “Paper Towns,” tells Variety. “It’s something we’re going to have to look at and review on a post-mortem basis and find out why we didn’t get more people in.”

In fact, the weekend overall was down and some speculated that many would-be moviegoers stayed home because of the shocking shooting last week week at a Louisiana theatre showing “Trainwreck” that killed three and injured nine.

The box office doldrums didn’t hurt “Southpaw,” however, as the Jake Gyllenhaal boxing drama — the only new release aimed at adults — opened to a better-than-expected $16.7 million, a solid haul considering the movie’s budget was only $25 million.

  • Paul Rudd: You’ll See More of Me as ‘Ant-Man’

Moviegoers have yet to experience rom-com staple Paul Rudd as a superhero, but he’s ready to don his “Ant-Man” costume again for the big screen.

“I figured that when you sign up for this that it can exist for more than just one—and in some form,” Rudd tells “Made in Hollywood.”

“I don’t know how or what the story will be, and I was excited by that—I still am, I can’t wait to find out where I go. I have some ideas, but I’m keeping some things to myself.”

In “Ant-Man” Rudd takes on Scott Lang, a former petty thief and father who helps his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, played by Michael Douglas, safeguard the Ant-Man technology – which allows its user to shrink in size and gain incredible strength. He can also communicate with ants and other high order insects through a specialized helmet, according to the comic book series.

With so much buzz about “Ant-Man,” it’s likely that Rudd continue with the character in a three-picture deal, as well as have appearances in cursory Marvel universe films.

Following “Ant-Man’s” release, he will reprise the character in “Captain America: Civil War,” in theaters May 2016.

Also starring Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, and Tip “T.I.” Harris, the comedy-action movie hit theaters July 17. Watch the trailer below:

  • ‘Ant-Man’ Star T.I. Calls Wolverine the Best Superhero

Ant-Man can shrink to the size of a real-life ant and just like the insect that bares his namesake, he can utilize its ability to lift more than 5,000 times its own weight.

And while those skills are impressive to many, it fails to impress T.I., who stars as Dave opposite Paul Rudd as the titular hero in “Ant-Man.”

Speaking to Made in Hollywood alongside his co-stars Michael Pena and David Dastmalchian, the rapper-actor reveals why “X-Men’s” immortal, metallic-claw wielding Wolverine is his favorite Marvel universe hero.

“Because he travels through different time periods and he has so many different loves of his life,” T.I. says, eliciting laughs from Pena and Dastmalchian. “In different generations he falls in love with different people.”

He adds: “I guess the claws are cool.”

The action-comedy co-stars Michael Douglas, who serves as Rudd’s character’s mentor, and Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll and Bobby Cannavale, opened July 17.
