  • ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’ Review: Marvel’s ‘Infinity War’ Follow-up Is a Damn Good Time at the Movies

It’s not meant to be a pun to call “Ant-Man and the Wasp” the smallest Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to date, but especially after the smorgasbord of brutality that unfolded in “Avengers: Infinity War,” Peyton Reed’s follow-up to “Ant-Man” feels like sorely-needed counterprogramming.

Scruffy, understated and fun, the sequel sidesteps just about all of the gravitas left hanging after the events of April’s highly-anticipated superhero crossover, instead focusing on few more than the characters from the first film, some remarkably inventive action, and a story aimed, directly and satisfyingly, at resolving emotional baggage rather than driving forward the machinery of a cinematic universe.

As briefly mentioned in “Infinity War,” Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) took a plea deal for his participation in the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” and is serving out his sentence on house arrest in San Francisco. But a strange vision of Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) prompts him to contact Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), who coincidentally are working on a device to try and locate her in the Quantum Realm, where she got lost decades ago.

Desperate to complete his sentence and re-establish a presence in his daughter Cassie’s life, Scott is reluctant to help them further, especially since they’re still on the run from the authorities. But when a mysterious figure called Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) shows up to steal a much-needed part, disrupting Hank and Hope’s work, Scott agrees to help track her down, locate the materials needed to complete their device, and hopefully bring together not one but two families — all before S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) discovers what they’re up to.
antman and the waspAlthough his abs are as capable of scrubbing out tough stains as the next hero’s, Scott Lang is the outlier of the MCU — in virtually all other respects, an ordinary guy whose costumed exploits are secondary to his priorities as a father and aspiring business owner. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” leans refreshingly heavily on his “regular” life — or at least a reasonable facsimile of the life this guy might lead — if he actually faced some of the consequences of his actions, including the ones he was paying for at the beginning of the first film. Although he likes bragging about his escapades with the Avengers in Germany, his central concern is not screwing up his relationship with Cassie, and helping launch a security company with Luis (Michael Pena) and the rest of his crew of ex-convicts. It’s a much more interesting, identifiable foundation than the calling that some have, or the inescapability that many others do, and Rudd maximizes his natural “better to be clever than smart” charm in the role.

That said, a preponderance of exposition greets viewers at the beginning of the movie to make sure that you know exactly who Janet Van Dyne was, what happened to her, why and how Hank and Hope are trying to find her, and who plans to stop them from accomplishing that goal and for what reason. The result is a decidedly underwhelming first few scenes, but what quickly emerges is the delightful discovery that the movie doesn’t need “more” happening for it to entertain audiences; with the stakes clearly defined and the characters established, we never have to worry about what it all means for the future of a larger film series, or really even just this franchise. Instead, we get to simply revel in watching them face an escalating series of obstacles in their path.

If “Infinity War” felt like too much, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” feels like the right amount of “too little,” content to explore its tiny corner of this larger universe in suitably meticulous detail.
Lilly, a commanding actor since her debut on the TV series “Lost,” finally gets the chance to be as tough and in charge as she’s always deserved, and effectively sidelines the guy audiences came to see the first time. Additionally, her character’s relationship with her father, Hank, gets sketched in with more nuance this time, enabling both her and Douglas to provide some real pathos, and at the same time be more playful. Meanwhile, Pena’s improvisational excesses once again give the movie some of its funniest moments; among Lang’s crew, he comes away with the most to do in the film. Conversely, Hannah John-Kamen oozes wounded anger as Ghost, but a surplus of backstory does as much as the actress’ own talents to keep her from simply being the film’s erstwhile villain.

Some viewers may find themselves disappointed by the lack of showstopping moments that they haven’t already seen in trailers and promotional materials, but in terms of sheer character-oriented action, the film delivers some of the best that the MCU has seen. Director Peyton Reed, granted seeming free reign after inheriting the first “Ant-Man,” makes the most of his two heroes’ superpowers with visuals that utilize their rapid shifts in size and play well into the franchise’s self-aware sense of humor.

Ultimately, whether it means Lang’s foray into his daughter’s school for a family heirloom, the collapsing secrets of Hank Pym’s portable lab, or just the comparable scale of this story to the rest told in the MCU, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” works best when it’s at a little bit smaller than life size — consistently buoyant and thrilling, but also surprisingly intimate, which makes it just as important as any of its predecessors.

  • Evangeline Lilly ‘Pissed’ About ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Overseas Release

Thanks but no thanks to the World Cup, many countries — including the U.K. — won’t get to see “Ant-Man and the Wasp” until more than a month after its initial release.

Evangeline Lilly, aka Hope van Dyne/The Wasp, told the British magazine Empire she’s worried that delayed release will lead many fans to pirate the movie instead of waiting. After all, we’re not just talking about any old sequel, we’re talking about a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie that’s expected to have some kind of lead-in to next year’s “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers 4.”

Still, while the U.S. will get to see the “Ant-Man” sequel on July 6, the U.K. and Poland have to wait until August 3, with Italy scheduled to get it August 14, then Portugal August 15, and Japan waiting until August 31.

Why? The World Cup is dominating international attention, delaying many releases (although “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” went the other way and opened overseas several weeks before the U.S.).

Evangeline Lilly shared her frustration with the equally frustrated folks at Empire (via CBM):

“They always do that. Then what happens is people just pirate the movie and they see it in the worst way possible, like some sh*tty version online, instead of going to a theater. They go in the end, but I don’t like that staggering. I’m really going to get to the bottom of this for you. I’m as pissed off about it as you are.”

Paul Rudd, aka Scott Lang/Ant-Man, added:

“I don’t understand. Let me see if we can maybe get the World Cup moved.”

Haha. Maybe just play snippets during breaks in the action.

Last we heard, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” was tracking for an opening of around $75 million at the North American box office, which would be better than the first film but modest for the MCU in general. But we’ll see.

We get to see it in theaters July 6.

  • New ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ TV Spot Wonders Where Scott Lang Was During ‘Infinity War’

If you were wondering where Ant-Man was during the events of “Avengers: Infinity War,” well, you’re not alone. This new TV spot for “Ant-Man and the Wasp” asks that very same question.

As Marvel previously revealed, the movie takes place before the events of “Infinity War” and after “Captain America: Civil War.” Two years elapsed between those two films, so that explains the lighter, funnier tone of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (since all those you-know-whats haven’t taken place yet).

And indeed, the shot of Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) towering over a shrunken Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is pretty amusing. The TV spot also has some new footage and a better look at Randall Park’s FBI agent character.

The movie sees Scott and Hope, along with her father Hank Pym, attempting to rescue Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) aka the original Wasp from the Quantum Realm. Many fans are theorizing that the end of the movie coincides with all the you-know-whats at the end of “Infinity War.”

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” opens in theaters July 6.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Tracking for $75 Million Opening

Ant-Man and the Wasp” has the tough job of following “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War” at the 2018 box office. The “Ant-Man” sequel is the 20th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s not expected to be one of the major blockbusters of the franchise.

That said, early tracking suggests “Ant-Man and the Wasp” will substantially outpace the first movie in its opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Paul Rudd/Evangeline Lilly sequel looks like it will make about $75 million at the domestic box office over the July 6-8 opening weekend.

“Ant-Man” opened to just under $58 million in 2015, for a total domestic box office intake of $180.2 million, plus just under $340 million overseas for a global total of $519.3 million.

Although it’s good to see the sequel will apparently top the original, TheWrap noted that it would make “Ant-Man and the Wasp” the first Marvel Studios movie since “Doctor Strangeopened to $85M to post a domestic opening below $100 million.

That said, if “Ant-Man and the Wasp” gets a strong reaction from fans — and jumps ahead in time to include big hints on what’s ahead in “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers 4” — it could be a giant surprise at the box office. Sometimes lower expectations help!

“Avengers: Infinity War” was always expected to crush at the box office, and it just passed $2 billion. It’s one of only four movies to have ever made that much money (not adjusting for inflation). “Avengers 4” is expected to make a similar killing, when it opens after “Captain Marvel” next spring.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Trailer Tease Asks Where They Were During ‘Infinity War’

Marvel knows its fans probably have a million questions after the emotional rollercoaster that was “Avengers: Infinity War,” and it’s going to answer a big one this week: Why weren’t Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) in the movie?

Of course, that’s probably not the most pressing concern for MCU diehards right now, but it’s still an important query, since we already know that those heroes will be making some key contributions to next year’s “Avengers 4.” And according to a new trailer tease for upcoming “Ant-Man” sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” it looks like we’re going to see exactly what the titular pair were up to while everyone else in the MCU was off fighting Thanos in Wakanda.

The full trailer won’t be dropping until Tuesday, but Marvel also released a new poster for the flick (featuring new cast member Michelle Pfeiffer as Hope/The Wasp’s mother, Janet Van Dyne) to tide over fans until then. It’s hard to believe that another Marvel flick will be coming out so soon, since fans are still riding high after “Infinity War”‘s record-breaking opening weekend, but Marvel is nothing if not productive.

Stay tuned for the new “Ant-Man and the Wasp” trailer tomorrow. The movie hits theaters on July 6.

  • First ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Trailer Launches Beautiful New Partnership

    Meet the new dynamic duo.

Marvel released the first trailer for “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” which brings back Paul Rudd as the thief-turned-tiny-superhero Scott Lang. The sequel teams him up with Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne, who gets a suit of her own.

They’re on the run, after Scott’s defeat along with Captain America’s side in “Civil War.” Her father, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), goes with them, packing up his entire tech company in a tiny cube (a great visual gag). Not only must Scott and Hope evade the authorities, they also use their suits to enter the Quantum Realm to find her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer).

The trailer has the breezy, heist-like tone of the first movie, but adds a screwball romantic comedy vibe that plays off the chemistry between Rudd and Lilly. Also starring are Michael Peña, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, and Laurence Fishburne.

“Ant-Man” and the Wasp” opens in theaters July 6, 2018.

  • ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Suit Up in New Photo

A new photo from the upcoming Marvel sequel “Ant-Man and the Wasp” has arrived, and it finally unites our titular duo in all their superhero glory.

The image features Evangeline Lilly and Paul Rudd in character — and in Lilly’s case, in full costume at last — as Hope Van Dyne and Scott Lang, a.k.a. Wasp and Ant-Man. While we’ve seen Lilly before in part of her suit, this is the first time we’ve seen her fully transformed into her insect-monikered alter ego, and we’re loving all of her outfit’s subtle nods to her winged inspiration. From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes “Ant Man and the Wasp,” a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of “Captain America: Civil War,” Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a Super Hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Walton Goggins, Bobby Cannavale,  Judy Greer, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Hannah John Kamen, Abby Ryder-Fortson, Randall Park, with Michelle Pfeiffer, with Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Douglas.

Kevin Feige is producing with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, Charles Newirth, and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer & Gabriel Ferrari wrote the screenplay. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” hits U.S. theaters on July 6, 2018.

The photo is practically buzzing with anticipation, and we are too, especially considering Lilly’s previous comments about the characters’ adventures in this new chapter. According to the actress, the events of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” will have a major impact on the “Avengers” universe, potentially opening up new timelines for Marvel characters to explore on the big screen for years to come.

Of course, we’ll have to wait for the sequel’s premiere — not to mention the May release of “Avengers: Infinity War” — to know more. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” is due to hit theaters on July 6.

  • Evangeline Lilly Compares Post-‘Avengers 4’ MCU to ‘Lost’: ‘Everything’s About to Shift’

Big things are on the horizon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the upcoming release of “Infinity War,” the two-part conclusion to the “Avengers” saga. The epic flick is set to assemble dozens of beloved characters, and launch a new chapter in the MCU, one whose future — not to mention future timeline — is murky at best. Bending the concept of time is something recent MCU addition Evangeline Lilly can relate to, with the Wasp actress comparing this seismic shift in the Marvel galaxy to another high-profile project from her past.

    While Lost” alum.

“When I heard about ‘Infinity War’ and the direction that they’re heading, I did have this moment of realizing, oh, wow, there’s a bit of a déjà vu for me with the ‘Lost’ franchise,” Lilly said of the suggestion that the MCU will also feature “flash-forwards and flashbacks and flash-sideways,” just like the late ABC sci-fi series. “We are hitting that [‘Lost’] Season 4 space where everything’s about to shift, and you’re about to lose the solid ground underneath you. And [‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’], of course, will play a part in that.”

According to the actress, she and her “Ant-Man” cohorts seem especially well-equipped to play a key role in those unique time elements. Here’s how Lilly explained it to Vanity Fair:

“Those characters are experts in the quantum realm. In ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ they are trying everything in their power to safely enter the quantum realm and return back from it because they have evidence from the first film that Scott Lang was able to do that. If he can do it, why can’t we? If we do succeed in ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp,’ then that does open a whole entire new multi-verse to enter into and play around in. I’m not the story creator, so I can’t tell you what they’re going to do with that. But I definitely see the potential there.”

It’s certainly an intriguing aspect of this new MCU, and like Lilly said, it suggests there’s lots of potential for the storytelling ahead. Fans may be sad to see the Avengers go, but it sounds like there’s plenty to be excited about, too.

  • Evangeline Lilly Shows Off Her Guns as ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp’ Filming Starts

Premiere Of Marvel Studios 'Ant-Man' - ArrivalsAs production begins on upcoming Marvel movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” titular heroine Evangeline Lilly is getting back into fighting shape, offering fans a sneak peek at her super physique and generating some serious buzz for the sequel.

In a photo shared on social media over the weekend, Lilly can be seen showing off her impressively sculpted arms, and putting on what appear to be boxing gloves.

“#Wasp ready arms,” the actress captioned the photo, which she posted on Sunday. “They better be. First official day of shooting for me tomorrow!”

As the film’s title indicates, “Ant-Man and the Wasp” will see Lilly’s role as Hope van Dyne — a.k.a. The Wasp — expanded significantly following the events of 2015’s “Ant-Man.” The new flick will see Hope suit up as her alter ego, and unite with Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) — a.k.a. Ant-Man — for a new mission.

Based on Lilly’s photo alone, it seems safe to say she’ll be ready to take on whatever challenges the MCU throws her way.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp” is shooting right now, and also stars Michael Douglas, Michael Pena, Michelle Pfeiffer, Laurence Fishburne, Walton Goggins, and Randall Park. It’s slated to hit theaters on July 6, 2018.
