‘Killing Eve’ Season 2 Premiere Sets Series-High Ratings

    BBC America

“Killing Eve” is killing it in the ratings.

The drama reached an all-time record-high in the ratings for Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, with 1.2 million viewers.

That’s half a million viewers and a 67% rise from its previous high in the Season 1 finale. The premiere episode also doubled its average in the adults 18-49 demo, to a total of 327,000.

There are some big differences between the first and second seasons. Now, the show is being simulcast on both BBC America (its original home) and sister network AMC.

The show also got a ton of notice over the fall and winter, thanks to Sandra Oh hosting the Golden Globes and winning a Globe and a SAG Award for her performance.

The meteoric rise in ratings led AMC Networks to give the show an early renewal for Season 3.

It will be shepherded by another new showrunner, British writer Suzanne Heathcote (“Fear the Walking Dead”). She follows Season 2 executive producer Emerald Fennell, and Season 1’s EP and series creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

“Preacher” is returning in August, but the show’s fourth season will be its final one.

Seth Rogen, one of the executive producers on the AMC series, shared the news with fans via Instagram on Monday, thanking them and saying, “It’s been a wild ride.” He also shared a trippy video announcement that revealed Season 4’s Aug. 4 premiere date.

The fourth and final season of Preacher is coming. It’s been a wild ride. Thank you all.

“Preacher” premiered in May 2016. The show is based on the comic book series of the same name from Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. It centers on Jesse (Dominic Cooper), an unconventional preacher with an powerful gift that leads him on a quest. He’s joined by his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and a vampire, Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).

Rogen developed the series with longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg as well as showrunner Sam Catlin. The show has earned a 90 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer alongside a 86 percent “liked it” audience score, at the time of this writing. But alas, the wild ride is coming to its end.

Prepare to say goodbye to “Preacher” when Season 4 arrives on Aug. 4.

  • ‘Killing Eve’ Renewed for Season 3, Gets New Showrunner

‘Killing Eve’ Renewed for Season 3, Gets New Showrunner

    BBC America

Just one day after the sophomore season debut of acclaimed drama “Killing Eve,” the BBC America series has been renewed for a third season.

The news was announced on Monday at an AMC Networks summit, where it was also revealed that “Killing Eve” would be getting a new showrunner for season three. Unlike with other series, however, where a revolving door of EPs is a major creative red flag, this is a tradition for “Killing Eve,” which has plans in place to install a new head female writer every year it remains on the air.

Taking over showrunner duties for season three will be British writer Suzanne Heathcote (“Fear the Walking Dead”). She follows season two EP Emerald Fennell, and season one EP Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who created the series.

“I’m very excited that the ‘Killing Eve’ baton is being passed onto another incredible writer for season three,” Waller-Bridge said in a statement. “We can sleep soundly knowing these characters are safe in Suzanne Heathcote’s hilariously murderous hands.”

“Killing Eve” has been a success since its launch last year, scoring glowing reviews, lots of awards season attention, and — most crucially — excellent ratings. The series stars Sandra Oh as the titular MI6 agent, who becomes obsessed with the psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer).

According to AMC Networks president Sarah Barnett, handing “Killing Eve” such an early renewal is “a sign of confidence,” since “we adore this show as much as our fans do.”

“‘Killing Eve doesn’t do anything in a templated way; we love giving opportunity to three genius women to make their mark,” Barnett added.

One other way the show has bucked convention is by being simulcast this season by both original network BBC America, and sister net AMC, in an attempt to bring more viewers to the series. With its latest renewal, it will get even more opportunities to do just that.

    The Walking Dead Season 9

“The Walking Dead” is multiplying once again on AMC.

The network has officially ordered another spinoff of its zombie hit drama, which launched “Fear the Walking Dead” in 2015.

The announcement comes a week after the flagship’s Season 9 finale, which was the lowest rated in series history.

The new untitled series, which received a 10-episode order, was co-created by “Walking Dead” universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple and longtime writer Matt Negrete. The latter will serve as showrunner.

Negrete and Gimple collaborated on the Season 9 episode, “What Comes After,” that marked the last appearance of star Andrew Lincoln, who will reprise his role as Rick Grimes in three TV movies on AMC.

It’s unclear if the new spinoff is connected to Rick or those movies, or if it’ll feature any current universe characters.

AMC did reveal that the series will center on two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as viewers know it.

Here’s the official logline: “Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”

Production begins this summer in Virginia for a 2020 premiere.

  • ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Ticket Sales Crash Multiple Sites, and Fans Are Losing It

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Ticket Sales Crash Multiple Sites, and Fans Are Losing It

    Walt Disney Studios

Tuesday was a big day for “Avengers” fans, who were treated to a new teaser for the final flick in the franchise, “Endgame,” as well as the start of ticket presales for the hotly-anticipated film. But excitement soon turned to anger for many would-be moviegoers, as the overwhelming demand crashed multiple ticketing websites.

Sites including Fandango and AMC experienced a huge surge of traffic this morning as thousands of eager fans logged on to secure their seats for “Endgame.” Unfortunately, many of them were met with error messages, screens that wouldn’t finish loading, or queue times stretching into multiple hours.

Frustrated filmgoers took to Twitter to sound off, some of them chastising ticketing companies for their lack of preparedness, others simply lamenting the fact that they might not get to see “Endgame” on opening day.

According to Deadline, much of the trouble with purchases early on Tuesday could be chalked up to the sheer volume of ticketing requests. The trade reports that mobile retailer Atom Tickets saw “Endgame” generate a record number of tickets sold, with the film easily outpacing last year’s “Infinity War” by a three-to-one margin in the first hour of sales.

It makes sense that “Endgame” is inspiring such a frenzy, since the film is the big swan song for many beloved characters. As several outlets have already pointed out, if you’re having trouble purchasing tickets, keep trying. Marvel definitely wants your money, after all, and we have a feeling that theaters will add extra showings to keep up with the huge demand.

“Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters on April 26.

  • ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Ends With Lowest-Rated Finale Ever

‘The Walking Dead’ Season 9 Ends With Lowest-Rated Finale Ever

    AMC

“The Walking Dead” has reached new lows.

The AMC zombie drama still remains one of cable TV’s highest rated shows. But the Season 9’s last episode was its lowest-rated finale ever.

Sunday night’s finale — which kicked off a snowmageddon arc — was watched by 5.02 million viewers and received a 1.9 rating among adults 18-49 on its first airing.

The previous low for a finale was Season 1’s cap, which brough tin little under 6 million and a 3.0 in the demo.

Season 9 as a whole averaged 4.95 million viewers and a 1.9 in the demo in live+same day ratings. That’s down 37 percent in viewers and 44 percent in the demo versus Season 8.

The only good news is that the finale rose from last week’s series low ratings (4.15 million viewers, 1.5 in adults 18-49).

Despite the inexorable drop in viewership, “The Walking Dead” remains the No. 1 series on cable (excluding sports and news) this season by a wide margin. But it will likely have to give up that badge of honor when HBO’s “Game of Thrones” premieres on April 14.

  • New ‘Orphan Black’ Series in the Works at AMC

New ‘Orphan Black’ Series in the Works at AMC

    BBC America

Sci-fi series “Orphan Black” may have ended its run in 2017, but the show will live on — in a sense, anyway — thanks to a new project in development at AMC.

Variety reports that the cable outlet is teaming with original “Orphan Black” producers Temple Street Productions to make a new show “set in the ‘Orphan Black’ universe.” What exactly that means is anyone’s guess, since Variety’s sources also said that this new project “would not be a spinoff or reboot of the original series, but rather a completely new story set in the same world.”

The show is so mysterious, in fact, that it doesn’t even have a script yet, but is currently seeking writers to pitch ideas “on what the show could be,” per Variety. The original “Orphan Black” starred Tatiana Maslany as a woman who discovers she’s one of several clones (also played by Maslany), who have all been targeted by a killer. Maslany won an Emmy for her role in 2016.

The series ran for five seasons on BBC America, with whom AMC is currently partnering to air another BBC America original series, “Killing Eve.” It’s unclear at this time if this new “Orphan Black” show would follow a similar broadcast strategy.

  • ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Promotes Alexa Nisenson to Series Regular

‘Fear the Walking Dead’ Promotes Alexa Nisenson to Series Regular

    AMC

Alexa Nisenson can look forward to spending more time in the zombie apocalypse. After joining AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” for several Season 4 episodes, the actress is set to return in Season 5.

Nisenson has been made a series regular, Deadline reports. She plays Charlie, a young girl who spied for the Vultures. After they fell, she ended up joining Morgan’s group. She’ll star alongside Lennie James, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Danay Garcia, Colman Domingo, Maggie Grace, Garret Dillahunt, and Jenna Elfman as well as “Fear the Walking Dead” newcomer Karen David.

After multiple characters were killed off in Season 4, it makes sense that “Fear the Walking Dead” would have room to promote a recurring character and add in someone new. Charlie’s search for redemption, in particular, should work well with the more hopeful tone that emerged in the second half of the season.

“I think going forward, this show is really going to be about the mission of hope and it’s going to be about our characters trying to make the world a better place,” co-showrunner Andrew Chambliss told Comicbook.com in late September.

“Fear the Waking Dead” began production during the fall, and Season 5 is slated to premiere later this year.

Even more “The Walking Dead” is coming our way. AMC announced that a second spinoff of its hit zombie drama is in “active development.”

“We’re not yet at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere,” said Ed Carroll, AMC’s chief operating officer during an earnings call with investors.

“But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”

Despite falling ratings for the flagship series, AMC is determined to wring as much content out of “The Walking Dead” as possible. They launched the first spinoff, “Fear the Walking Dead,” in 2015. The network is also planning three spinoff movies starring Andrew Lincoln, who departed the flagship last season.

Scott Gimple, the Chief Content Officer of “TWD” universe, teased more offshoots last year, saying, “There’s a lot of stuff that’s cooking in the garage right now. We’re working on all sorts of things.”

The potential new spinoff could focus on Danai Gurira, who is reportedly exiting after the upcoming Season 10. Fans have also speculated another spinoff could explore the zombie apocalypse in another location, like Tokyo or London.

“The Walking Dead” is currently airing its ninth season.

  • The ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie Is a Sequel With Aaron Paul, Will Air on Netflix and AMC

The ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie Is a Sequel With Aaron Paul, Will Air on Netflix and AMC

    AMC

A few precious details are finally emerging about Vince Gilligan’s upcoming “Breaking Bad” movie.

The two-hour film, which was announced last November, will be a sequel starring Emmy winner Aaron Paul. It will follow the escape of a kidnapped man — Paul’s character, Jesse Pinkman — and his quest for freedom.

Gilligan is writing the script and sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that he will also direct.

Deadline reports that the movie will stream first on Netflix, then air on AMC — a reversal from the original series. Netflix is often credited for the show’s rise in popularity and ratings in later seasons. Even Gilligan himself acknowledged that when accepting the show’s first Emmy for Best Drama.

“I think Netflix kept us on the air,” he said at the time. “Not only are we standing up here, I don’t think our show would have even lasted beyond Season 2 .… It’s a new era in television, and we’ve been very fortunate to reap the benefits.”

Paul’s co-star Bryan Cranston is not likely to reprise his role as Walter White in the movie, though if Gilligan asked him to  make a cameo, he said, “I would, absolutely.”

“I don’t know if there’s an appearance — flashbacks, flash forwards — but I’m excited about it because it’s ‘Breaking Bad’ and it was the greatest professional period of my life and I can’t wait to see all those people again, even if I just come by to visit,” Cranston said.

“Breaking Bad” ran for five seasons from 2008 to 2013 and told the story of Walter White, a chemistry teacher who turns to making meth after a cancer diagnosis and enlists the help of former student Jesse.

The series is regarded as one of the best in television history and earned numerous awards, including 16 Emmys (three of which for Paul as Best Supporting Actor). The show also generated a spinoff, the highly acclaimed “Better Call Saul,” which will return for a fifth season later this year.
