AMC confirmed that Melissa McBride is officially joining ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ for Season 2.
The new season will be called ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon –– The Book of Carol’.
The first teaser for the Andrew Lincoln/Danai Gurira-starring ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’ was unveiled.
The original show might have shuffled off like a walker into the televisual sunset, but the universe of ‘The Walking Dead’ is more than healthy, with plenty of spin-offs either already aired (‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’), in progress (‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’) or on the way (‘The Walking Dead: Those Who Live’).
And AMC chose this year’s New York City Comic-Con to drop some fresh news about two of those series.
First up, we have ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’.
Is Melissa McBride returning as Carol for ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’?

Good news for Carol/Daryl “shippers”, Melissa McBride will indeed be back as Carol Peletier for Season 2 on ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’.
McBride, who played the character for 11 seasons on the main show, was originally going to return for the spin-off, but fans were dismayed to learn that she wouldn’t be making it across to Europe for the series, citing scheduling clashes and a desire to take a break from zombie worries.
Here’s what McBride said in a statement about the news:
“I’ve known there was much more to be told of Carol’s story as I felt her so unsettled when we last saw her, as she watched her best friend, Daryl, ride away. Apart or (hopefully!) together, their stories run deep, and I’m so excited to continue Carol’s journey here. This team of storytellers have done amazing work to land these two established characters in an entirely new world to them, and I’m loving the discoveries!”

The six-episode spin-off series finds Daryl (Norman Reedus) fighting his way through a walker infested and deadly divided L’hexagone in France to protect a child who many believe could save the world.
From the sounds of it, he will make it back for the second season, which is now titled ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon –– The Book of Carol’ set to debut in 2024.

If there is an even more anticipated bit of ‘Walking Dead’ news, it would be anything about the Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira-starring ‘The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live’.
The spin-off is described as an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… and ultimately, a war against the living.
Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?
Or, if we’re being snarky, was the real Walking Dead the decomposing friends they made along the way?
This first look is certainly dramatic and has some flashes of action, but we’ll surely see more ahead of the show’s February 2024 premiere.

Taylor Swift bypassed the major studios and reached a partnership with AMC Theaters for her movie, breaking pre-sale records and opening to $96 million
Taylor Swift bypassed major studios for an unprecedented distribution partnership with AMC Theaters
Why the ‘Eras Tour’ movie was created
She’s done it again. Taylor Swift’s most recent tour was brimming with Swifties in sold-out stadiums donning armfuls of friendship bracelets and themed costumes. Now, Swifties fills the movie theater seats to see her concert movie ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,’ resulting in incredible pre-sale and box office numbers.
What Is the ‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour’ Movie About?
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.
The film, self-produced by Swift herself, gives viewers and fans a cinematic look at her most recent concert of the same name. Filmed over three shows at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, the movie is distributed at AMC Theaters and Cinemark Theaters. The concert depicts the various eras of Swift’s discography over ten acts, with songs like ‘Cruel Summer’, ‘Love Story’, ‘Champaign Problems, and ‘Karma’.
The Eras Tour Movie’s Incredible Pre-Sale

When Taylor Swift took to her Instagram to announce the movie, her diehard fans began prepping to snag tickets during the pre-sale. Due to the overwhelming demand for her concert, many fans were not fortunate enough to score for her show. ‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour’ gives fans another chance to see Taylor’s show without breaking the bank – where concert tickets cost upward of thousands of dollars.
In less than three hours, the film earned a record-breaking $26 million in presales at AMC Theaters alone, surpassing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’s pre-sale record of $16.9 million. The film opened to a staggering $96 million domestically and $128 million worldwide.
‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour’ opened on October 13 in 3,855 theaters. Swift struck an unprecedented deal with AMC Theaters after bypassing major studios once talks have gone cold. While the artist has partnered with AMC Theaters, the film is not exclusive to AMC. It is also shown in Cinemark and Regal theaters.
Why Was The ‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour’ Movie Created?
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.
Concert tickets are already hard to come by. Fans can sit all day long in the Ticketmaster queue only to be faced with a nosebleed seat with a high ticket price – if they’re lucky enough to get in the queue at all. Third-party resellers listed tickets for upwards of thousands of dollars, sometimes with seats with an obstructed view.
Reportedly, Swift was less concerned about where the movie would be shown but for her fans who weren’t able to afford to go to the concert a chance to see it in the theaters. With tickets priced at $19.89 (Swift’s birth year) for adults and $13.13 (Swift’s favorite number) for seniors and children, it is a much more cost-effective way to see her show. AMC Theater is also selling collectible Eras Tour popcorn buckets for $19.89, collectible drink cups for $9.99, and popcorn bugs for $14.99.
‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour’ is directed by Sam Wrench and will be playing in theaters for at least four weeks.

If there’s one person who could claim as much cultural impact via their music and their life as Taylor Swift at the moment, it’s Beyoncé Knowles-Carter.
So, somewhat naturally after having seen the success that Swift is enjoying with her ‘Eras Tour’ concert film even before it hits theaters, Beyoncé is readying ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’, a concert film based on her ‘Renaissance’ tour, and is taking on the same deal with AMC that Swift received.
To give her credit, however, this is something that Beyoncé, who has a history of impressive concert films, has been cooking up for a while –– it’s the distribution plan that’s new.

What is the Renaissance Tour?
‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 1st.
The Renaissance World Tour is the ninth concert tour by Beyoncé. Her highest grossing tour to date, it was announced on February 1, 2023, in support of her seventh studio album, ‘Renaissance’.
The all-stadium concert run began on May 10, 2023, in Stockholm, Sweden, and has just concluded this weekend in Kansas City, Missouri.
The concert lasts between two and a half and three hours and is split into six or seven acts, with Beyoncé performing the tracks of ‘Renaissance’ in order, interspersed with songs from across her discography (much like Taylor’s tour). The stage consists of a giant screen with a large “portal” in its center, and features sculptures, robotic arms and ultraviolet technology.
The tour broke ticket sales records worldwide and became the highest grossing tour ever by a female artist, achieving the two highest monthly tour-grosses in history.
‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 1st.
Primarily filmed at Beyoncé’s Houston hometown, ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ will also feature highlights of the tour and, in true Beyoncé, snippets of more personal footage, including time with her family.
“When I am performing, I am nothing but free,” Beyoncé says in the trailer over a montage of images from the road. “My goal for this tour was to create a place where everyone is free, and no one is judged.”
What’s the deal with ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’?
‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 1st.
As with the Eras Tour, ‘Renaissance’ was offered up on auction to studios and streamers but has ended up striking a deal with cinema chain AMC.
It’s something of a win-win for Beyoncé and the company, since the singer self-financed the film and will receive 50% of the worldwide profits when the movie is released.
When can I see ‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’?
‘Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce’ is scheduled to open in theaters on December 1st.
‘Renaissance’ is currently lining up a December 1st release in theaters. Right now, its main competition is Jeff Nichols’ ‘The Bikeriders’ and the first film in years from John Woo, ‘Silent Night’. We’d be shocked if they didn’t move off the spot the same way ‘The Exorcist: Believer’ blinked when faced with the power of Swift.
The experience will air Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, for a minimum of four weeks, with multiple showtimes programmed throughout the day. Tickets in the US for all standard showtimes will start at $22 plus tax; ‘Renaissance’ will also be available in IMAX at AMC and Dolby Cinema at AMC, and other branded premium large format screens.
You can buy tickets from today at AMC’s site and globally from its sister companies.

Already doing huge business before it has even opened, the Taylor Swift Eras Tour concert film is looking to conquer the wider world.
And in a surprise move, the movie, which will give cinema audiences the experience of being at one of her tour shows, is now going to be released globally day and date.
‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’–– which was filmed over three days of concerts in Los Angeles this summer — will play at every Odeon Cinemas location throughout Europe. Additionally, AMC and its sub-distribution partners are busy making agreements with additional cinema operators throughout the world.
89xyHwaKn2l2PsA2Vq8yg1
Tickets for international locations outside North America will go on sale for most participating locations beginning today. Odeon reported this morning that moviegoers can buy tickets at its locations in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Spain, Italy, Germany and Portugal. In a nod to Taylor Swift’s 1989 album and her favorite number, 13, tickets in the UK and Ireland will be priced at £19.89/€19.89 for adults and £13.13/€13.13 for children.
We say it’s a surprise move because Swift has yet to take the tour around the world. But while there could be concerns about cannibalizing ticket sales for it, that’s not a problem for Swift, who has already sold-out venues across Europe, with anticipation at a fever pitch.

What is the Eras Tour?
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.
The tour, which as the title suggests sees the singer/songwriter performing music from her various career “eras”, has been a massive triumph. The concert was attended by more than three million “Swifties” during the first leg of its U.S. run.
Not only did it shatter all concert sales records, but it also left tens of millions of fans wanting more, either because they attended the concert and wanted to see it again, or after being unable to obtain tickets for sold out performance after sold out performance.
While the first leg concluded last month, Swift has further dates planned for the tour, with the aim to head internationally next year.
Here’s what Swift herself had to say about the new concert film:
“The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far. I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon. Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged.”
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.
The tour film has already been a smash success, generating more than $65 million in presales, which is good news for both Swift and AMC, which made a deal to skip studios entirely and look set to cash in.
Plus, the most recent opening weekend prediction had the tour film making between $100 million -$125 million, though that comes from industry prognosticators and not AMC itself. Even if it makes around $85 million, it will still rank as the biggest opening for a concert movie.

‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ will launch in U.S. theaters on Friday, October 13th. It’ll have a unique release plan, playing at least four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in every U.S. AMC Theatre location (it’ll also play in Mexico and Canada and now, far beyond that).

The “Barbenheimer” sensation set a box office record this past weekend as fans spill into the theaters for both movies. With endless memes on the internet and fans planning their double-feature viewing strategy for ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, the phenomenon has set the weekend box office on fire. Showing up in a sea of pink for Greta Gerwig’s latest film, ‘Barbie’ opened to $155 million. Not to be outdone, Christopher Nolan’s visually stunning ‘Oppenheimer’ follows with $80.5 million on opening day.

The massive box office number is due to audiences refusing to choose one or the other, making their double feature an event of the summer. As the “Barbenheimer’ trend continues to grow on social media, many small businesses leaned into the theme, creating shirts and accessories to celebrate the release. Fans show off their outfit changes as they go from one movie to the next. Star of ‘Barbie’ Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig have also shown their support by posing for a photo in front of a poster of ‘Oppenheimer’ with tickets in hand.
‘Barbie’ also sets a record high for a movie by a female director, surpassing ‘Captain Marvel’ ($153.4 million) and ‘Wonder Woman’ ($103.3 million). Currently, both films are certified on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with ‘Barbie’ at 91% and ‘Oppenheimer’ at 94%. Worldwide, the movies have earned a combined $551.1 million, with ‘Barbie’ earning $337 million and ‘Oppenheimer’ earning $174.1 million.

A New Record For AMC Entertainment
Writer, director, and producer Christopher Nolan on the set of ‘Oppenheimer.’
Movie theaters struggled with attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic and have been slow to recover. The opening of both films sent masses to the theaters, setting the highest records since post-pandemic. According to AMC, Saturday was their busiest day since July of 2019. They recorded their fifth-highest single-day US ticket revenues in their 103-year history. AMC also recorded 87,000 members of their Stubs loyalty program members booked tickets for both movies over the weekend.
AMC CEO Adam Aron sends a personal congratulations to both films:
“AMC sends an enormous thank you and congratulations to Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the entire team at Warner Bros., and to Christopher Nolan and the team at Universal Pictures. They’ve demonstrated that well-made, well-marketed films that captivate audiences can open on the same weekend and both enjoy great success.”
One of the main driving forces leading the audience into the theater is ‘Oppenheimer’ being shot with IMAX cameras and offered in formats such as IMAX 70MM. While it’s not the first movie to be shot with IMAX cameras, Nolan’s visionary storytelling and use of practical effects create a theatrical experience that cannot be duplicated at home.
It is likely for the “Barbeheimer” trend to continue well into the summer as fans continue to show up for their chance to see the movies.

Opening exclusively in AMC Theaters on January 20th is the new psychological thriller ‘Alice, Darling,’ which was directed by first time feature filmmaker Mary Nighy.
But after taking a vacation with friends, Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn) and Sophie (Wunmi Mosaku), she reassesses her relationship and attempts to break her codependency in spite of Simon’s vengeful attitude.
Moviefone recently had the pleasure of sitting down in-person with Anna Kendrick to talk about her work on ‘Alice, Darling,’ her first reaction to the screenplay, the aspects of the character she was excited to explore, Alice’s abusive relationship with Simon and how that affects her both mentally and physically.
Anna Kendrick in ‘Alice, Darling.’
You can read the full interview below or click on the video player above to watch our interview with Anna Kendrick about ‘Alice, Darling.’
Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to reading the screenplay, and what were some of the aspects of the character you were excited to explore on screen?
Anna Kendrick: I think my immediate sense reading the screenplay was, I was really excited about this thing that Alana (Francis), the screenwriter had managed to pull off. Which is really rare when you’re reading a screenplay where she was very specifically not spelling things out. It wasn’t really prescriptive, and she was just doing so much with so little both in the dialogue and in the action lines. She was just really creating a world, a tone and an atmosphere, and it was almost kind of visual poetry. It really invited you into the character, her anxiety and that kind of restraint, that I think is really difficult for screenwriters to trust, I guess.
I totally understand why if you’re just putting it on paper and sending it out, wanting to be like, “This is what I mean by this.” She really created a piece of poetry, and so everybody showed up to the movie with the same sense of tone, if that makes sense. I’ve been on film sets before where you’re like, “Oh, I think a lot of us are in a different movie right now. We’re saying the lines and everything, but you’re in a different movie than I’m in.” Everybody really knew what this movie was, and that meant that we just had to show up and do our jobs, and that was exciting. I think with Alice’s journey, there’s a lot of high impact moments, but what I found exciting was some of the places, especially early in the film where Alice is kind of unlikeable.
She’s in a bad spot, and sometimes when you are not well and things are not good in your life, you’re not perfectly vulnerable and you’re not this kind of doe-eyed innocent lamb. Sometimes you might be cold to your friends, you might push people away, you might withdraw, and it doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of inner life going on. There’s not much to draw you in, which is kind of vulnerable for me as a performer because very explicitly, I try to draw people in. It was weird to trust that the audience would be willing to stick with Alice long enough to see what was really going on with her.
(L to R) Anna Kendrick as Alice and Charlie Carrick as Simon in ‘Alice, Darling.’ Photo Credit: Samantha Falco.
MF: Finally, Alice’s relationship with Simon is literally physically making her sick. Can you talk about that abusive relationship between the two of them and how it brings out these obsessive compulsive aspects of her personality?
AK: First of all, Charlie who plays Simon, was such an incredible scene partner and ally for me on set. We both had the same thoughts about making sure that the relationship really felt like the kind of thing where you could understand why Simon would be convinced that he was the victim, and Alice would be convinced that she was the perpetrator. We talked about that a lot and I felt so lucky to have him as my partner in this.
I think that I’ve talked to a lot of women, and I know for me personally, there is something about this kind of invisible internal, just soul crushing experience where there are manifestations physically. Whether it’s a rash or you have stomach problems, I feel like that’s something that comes up, these kind of physical, symptomatic things. I thought it was really smart of Alana, the screenwriter, to have that manifest in this kind of obsessive hair twirling and tugging. There’s just such an evocative image to sort of punish the self, and to punish a part of you that is supposed to be, especially as a women, beautiful, shiny and pleasing.
To be compelled to harm this part of yourself, this external part of yourself, because what’s going on inside simply must be expressed in some way. It was just such beautiful writing and it was really fun to try to capture that perfectly on camera. That was one of the first things that we did on the camera test day with Mary and our brilliant cinematographer, Mike McLaughlin, was really get in there with these macro lenses and try to find the perfect way to show the tension of the strand of hair around a finger, because strands of hair turns out to be very challenging to put on film, but it was really fun to do.

By and large, going to work for a shadowy government agency is normally not a good idea. Ryan Kwanten’s Jake Atherton, though, doesn’t really have much of a choice, and you can see why in the new trailer for ‘Section 8,’ which we have exclusively for you to watch.
Jake, you see, is a former special forces soldier who was honorably discharged and enjoying spending time with his wife and young son. But then he discovers that his family has been murdered. Understandably aggrieved, he sets out to take vengeance on those responsible with lethal force and zero remorse.
Sent to prison, he’s visited by his former commanding officer Tom Mason (played by action legend Dolph Lundgren), who offers words of regret. But then he’s given something even more valuable – at least to him at the time – the chance to get out and join an elite group of former agents and troopers who carry out off-the-books missions for the organization known as Section 8.
Recruited by Dermot Mulroney’s Sam Ramsey, he’s soon thrust back into action, carrying out assassinations and whatever other missions Section 8 assigns him to.
Alongside the likes of Leonard Locke (Scott Adkins) and the rest of the team, he tries to be a good soldier and follow orders, but soon realizes that many of their targets are innocent people. And that Section 8 just might be a little less noble than he originally thought.
Ryan Kwanten in ‘Section 8,’ which will be in theaters and streaming on AMC+ beginning September 23, 2022.
Soon, Jake is going deeper than he ever thought, turning against those he’s been working with and learning that once you’re out on your own, there is a huge target on your back… And the Section 8 team is definitely not one you want as an enemy.
And those who like their action trivia will enjoy learning that this is Adkins and Lungren’s fifth time working on the same movie together; following ‘The Expendables 2,’ ‘Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning’, monster thriller ‘Legendary’ and last year’s ‘Castle Falls’.
Kwanten, meanwhile, might still be best known for HBO’s vampire series ‘True Blood’. He’s also appeared in movies such as ‘Kill Chain’, ‘Flight 7500’, and ‘Dead Silence’.
‘Section 8’ will be in theaters and streaming via AMC+ from September 23rd.

(L to R) Norman Reedus as Daryl Dixon, and Danai Gurira as Michonne, and Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’
When Andrew Lincoln’s ‘The Walking Dead’ character Rick Grimes was spirited away by mysterious forces in a helicopter early in Season 9 of the show, fans were left wondering when he might show up again.
And then Michonne, played by Dania Gurira, departed the following season on a quest to find the man she loves.
We had been told around that time that their story might continue in TV movies (partly to work around Lincoln’s schedule).
Now, though, both actors made a surprise appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel for the show to announce that their characters will in fact return in a new series.
Lincoln and Gurira, who have been actively involved in conceiving the creative and the continuation of their characters’ story, will be executive producers, while Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of ‘Walking Dead’ Universe, is acting as showrunner.
“What a great surprise for the fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched this universe and made television history, says Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “We couldn’t be more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create, one of three new series coming in 2023 that continue the stories of so many iconic and fan-favorite TWD characters.”
(L t R) Danai Gurira as Michonne, and Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes in AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead.’
“Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people,” Gimple says. “Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true. The three of us, along with a terrific team of ‘TWD’ all stars and incredible new voices, are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait.”
“This has been the most extraordinary journey playing Rick Grimes for the best part of a decade. The friendships I’ve made along the way are deep and lasting, so it’s fitting that I finally get to complete the story with Danai and Scott and the rest of the ‘TWD’ family, Lincoln enthuses. “I’m so excited to be returning to the screen as Rick, reuniting with Danai as Michonne, and bringing the fans an epic love story to add to the ‘Walking Dead’ Universe.”
Gurira adds: “Michonne and this ‘TWD’ family has meant so much to me, and to continue the journey of these beloved characters, alongside Scott and Andy, both creatively and in front of the camera, and bringing ‘Walking Dead’ fans something truly special is just glorious. I can’t wait to pick up the katana again.”
Here’s the official synopsis: “This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance by an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive – or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”
While the main ‘Walking Dead’ show wraps up this year, there are a variety of spin-offs in the works, including those featuring fan-favorite Daryl (Norman Reedus), Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and anthology ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’, which starts on August 14th.
This new Rick/Michonne series, which has yet to announce its title, will launch next year with six episodes.

Available on Blu-Ray and DVD beginning May 10th is the first season of AMC+’s crime drama, ‘Kin.’
Created by Peter McKenna and Ciaran Donnelly, the series centers on Dublin crime family the Kinsellas, who after a personal tragedy, go to war with rival criminal Eamon Cunningham (Ciaran Hinds).
Frank Kinsella (Aidan Gillen) runs the family business, while his brother Jimmy (Emmett J. Scanlan) is his top Lieutenant, and Jimmy’s wife Amanda (Clare Dunne), launders their illegal money through her car dealership. Things get more complicated for the family when Michael Kinsella (Charlie Cox), Frank and Jimmy’s brother, and Amanda’s ex-lover, is released from prison and rejoins the family business.
Irish actress Clare Dunne is best known for her years on stage with the Abbey Theater and the National Theater but has also appeared in a few high-profile movies. Dunne made her feature film debut with the Marvel movie ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home,’ and went on to star and co-write 2020’s ‘Herself,’ before appearing in 2021’s ‘The Last Duel,’ which was directed by Ridley Scott and written by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and Nicole Holofcener.
Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Clare Dunne about her work on the first season of ‘Kin.’

You can read our full interview with Clare Dunne about season 1 of ‘Kin’ below or watch the interview by clicking the video player above.
Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to this character and the series when you read the script for the pilot?
Clare Dunne: Oh, it was the best sit-down read ever. I sat down to start reading and I remember I had a glass of water beside me and I was actually sent four episodes. I don’t remember getting up to pee or anything until the end of episode two. I was just like reading, reading, reading. It was such a page-turner. I just thought it was very distilled and not a lot of words on each page actually. It was very confident in itself. I was just thinking this guy is writing something very strong compared to a lot of scripts that I’ve read. So yeah, it pull me right in.
MF: How would you describe Amanda and the circle of violence she finds herself and her family in?
CD: Amanda is basically a character who is married into a family that is very much involved in crime and drugs in Dublin. She has the job of running a car dealership and cleaning the money. But she definitely keeps her eyes on that road and nowhere else. She’s got two sons and she wants them to not be involved in the gang and is encouraging them to go to university.
So, I think she’s somebody that is able to hold her own in this family in terms of minding her own kids. But, she’s also dealing on very tentative land with the family because she is technically not blood. So, she’s always bordering between, “I’m holding my own and I’m a strong mother,” to, “Okay. I have to go with what the family says.”
Clare Dunne as Amanda Kinsella in ‘Kin’ Season 1. Photo Credit: Patrick Redmond/AMC+.
MF: I would compare Amanda’s arc in season 1 to Michael Corleone’s arc in the original ‘Godfather,’ as both characters go from innocent, to complicit, to guilty through the course of their stories. Did you see your character that way?
CD: I really did. In fact, I mistakenly was like, “Oh, I’m Tony Soprano,” joking one day. But then actually Peter, the writer said, “No, you’re Michael Corleone.” I was like, “Oh yeah, yeah. No, that’s what I am.” I would definitely agree with that. I think that’s really what this series is about. If you’re watching it, it’s hard on the outside and soft on the inside, if you know what I mean.
It’s showing that it’s not always what you think when you’re born into this world. Sometimes you don’t have a choice, certainly for the young people that are born into it. But when somebody’s married into it, they might be trying to stay out of it and then something can happen that literally snaps your moral fiber into a different direction, because you’ve been so affected by what’s happening. So, I think it’s really similar to Michael Corleone’s journey.
MF: Can you talk about the challenges of playing a mother who has lost their child?
CD: Oh my God. It’s a different kind of grief. That’s what I learned. I’ve never experienced that because I’m not a mother. But, oh my God, it’s really deep. It’s really tough. Even if you just look into it for more than an hour, or watch people talking about it, or read up about it, it’s something that is incredibly challenging.
But when I was in it and doing some of the more grief-stricken scenes, I just kind of, I basically would have to go, “Okay, that day I’m going to be really tired after work.” So, I would actually know that physically my body would be really spent after it because it is such a physical thing, grief. It just takes over. So, it was incredibly challenging, and it just made me feel all the more empathetic towards parents of children that go before them.
It definitely will play into season two. You will see her search for her meaning in life now, and that’s tough. I think what people forget about grief, or especially grief of children, is the first few months, everybody’s probably really aware of it. But it’s about that year later, and then that two years later, as you watch your other child grow up, or other kids his age growing up around you, and it’s a ripple effect. How do you keep going with that?

MF: Can you also talk about the love triangle that happens in season 1 between Amanda, Jimmy and Michael?
CD: Yes. The tripod of doom. I used to just call us a little tripod because we’re holding each other up, and we’re grand. I think it’s a very intricate relationship. We had to all slightly try and form a bit of history, and write a bit of history for ourselves before we started filming, because it’s all in the mystery of that and that is what you’re seeing.
You’re seeing the surface level of a lot of history and mystery. We had to kind of create that a bit. I think that will only deepen and grow as it goes and, cue the flashback episode moment. But I just think it’s one of those things in life where you can find somebody that ticks all the boxes, right? Then you meet somebody else and your spinal fluid is like, “That person is for me.” I don’t know why that happens, and it can be the completely wrong person to go for.
I feel like there’s something going on like that with Amanda and Jimmy and Michael. It’s just there. There’s just some chemistry there and it cannot be denied. It’s one of those things. It’s scientific or something. It’s really interesting because it’s just processing that and being like, “We can’t deny this anymore, but we also have to move on and be adults and grownups.”
MF: What was it like for you to get to work with this incredible ensemble that also includes Charlie Cox, Aidan Gillen, and Ciaran Hinds?
CD: It was just all-around brilliant. I worked with Ciarán in one of my first ever jobs on stage, so it was just like coming home. He was my dad in the last thing, so it was like, “Hey dad!” Then we were arch enemies and I loved working with him again. That was brilliant. Aidan, I’d never worked with before and I loved working with him. He’s just so generous an actor.
Then Emmett became the brother I never had, because I don’t have any brothers. I feel like I’ve inherited him now. Charlie was like a mentor, and a teacher in some ways, on set because he’s so experienced with TV acting. I really appreciate everyone, they were just so generous and looked after us.

MF: Finally, what can you tease fans about the upcoming second season of ‘Kin?’
CD: What can I say? The only thing I know is that there’s quite big character arcs for everyone now. I would say it’s a bit more ensemble and because of that really exciting. Because we already know everyone and are invested in everyone, so I think that will mean a slightly different pace to everything, which will be really good.
AMC+’s ‘Kin’ season 1 will be available on Blu-Ray and DVD beginning May 10th.

Just because ‘The Walking Dead’ is set to stumble into TV history this year, that doesn’t mean that network home AMC is ready to give up on the post-apocalyptic world just yet. Far from it, in fact, with a variety of follow-ups at different stages of development and a new one – starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan and Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee called ‘Isle of the Dead’ on the way.
A six-episode limited series, ‘Isle of the Dead’ will follow Maggie and Negan traveling into a post-apocalyptic Manhattan long ago cut off from the mainland. The crumbling city is filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world full of anarchy, danger, beauty, and terror.
Created by and to be run by ‘Dead’ scripting veteran Eli Jorné, the show will bring together two characters few thought would find common ground, especially since Negan was introduced partly by killing Maggie’s husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun). And yet, in the years since, they’ve come to an understanding, even teaming up in this 11th and final season.

Though there had been talk of a solo spin-off for Cohan’s popular character a few years ago, she went through some tough contract negotiations in recent times, leading to her making sporadic appearances in season 9 and leaving the show before returning for the Season 10 finale onwards.
“This is a very big day for the expanding universe we are building around ‘The Walking Dead’,” says Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks. “It not only adds another compelling series to this collection, it extends our storytelling around two unforgettable characters fans have grown to love, hate or hate and then love in Maggie and Negan, brilliantly inhabited by Lauren and Jeffrey. It also lets us explore a corner of this universe located on the island of Manhattan, with an iconic skyline that takes on a very different meaning when viewed through the lens of a zombie apocalypse.”
Says ‘Walking Dead’ chief content officer Scott Gimple: “Eli has created a chaotic, beautiful, grimy madhouse of the dead for Negan, Maggie, and fans of the show eager to discover an unseen and insane world of the ‘TWD’ Universe. Lauren and Jeffrey have always been fantastic collaborators and now, we bring that collaboration to the next level with a series that will take these characters to their limits with the world — and each other. All of us are thrilled to take you on an all new, all different ‘TWD’ epic for the ages.”
This latest spin-off follows the likes of prequel ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ and youth focused ‘The Walking Dead: The World Beyond’ and is part of a sprawling grand plan to keep the stories going.
Anthology series ‘Tales of the Walking Dead’ is scheduled to launch this year, while a show focused on Carol and Daryl, played by Melissa McBride and Norman Reedus, is expected in 2023. ‘Isle of the Dead’ should also be on screens at some point next year and there is still the lingering promise of a movie featuring Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.
