‘Étoile’ Season 1 receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Landing on Prime Video with all eight episodes of its first season, ‘Étoile’ is the latest series from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, responsible for shows such as ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.’

Yet it shares more in common with one of their lesser known projects, ‘Bunheads,’ which starred Sutton Foster as a Las Vegas showgirl who marries someone on a whim and ends up in their small home town, working with her mother-in-law at a ballet school. In ‘Étoile’s case, however, the setting is much grander, the stakes are higher and with a two-season order, its fate is much less dramatic.

Amy Sherman-Palladino has made no secret of her love for, and connection to, ballet. She trained as a dancer in her youth and was considering a career in the medium before TV writing and producing took over her life.

So with the success of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ and her overall deal at Amazon, she and husband/creative partner Dan Palladino have gone all in on the new series, filling it with their usual rat-a-tat screwball comedy dialogue, plenty of crackling comebacks and enough drama to cross the Atlantic and travel between both New York and Paris.

And given their love for dancing, it’s naturally also a showcase for some truly superb artists, choreographers and others. Depending on your own appreciation for the wild world of creative types and the giant egos in the ballet sphere, chances are this will be your next binge watch.

    Script and Direction

The Sherman-Palladino duo are known, as we said before, for their script work, and here, gifted with a cast that can pull it off (including one who learned English for the role and manages to pull off the quickfire chat), their words are the highlight.

With a much-expanded canvas (previous shows were largely set in one locale, though ‘Mrs. Maisel’ had New York as its playground and sent its title character on tour in one season), the transatlantic storyline of two famous ballet companies trading stars to bolster both their futures offers ripe opportunities to explore an even wider group of characters.

The creative pair has not lost their touch for creating compelling roles and finding entertaining ways into the story, leaning on the funny but also adding plenty of heart as the various struggles and romances come into play.

And with just eight episodes here, they handle the lion’s share of directorial duties, finding interesting ways to shoot both the big performances that anchor a couple of episodes but also focusing on the people behind the scenes.

The different cities’ settings provide appealing backdrops for the various story machinations.

    Cast and Performances

The series’ cast is a mixture of players who have worked with the creators before, some acting veterans and interesting people who American audiences might not be so familiar with.

Luke Kirby, who was so good in a supporting role as Lenny Bruce on ‘Maisel’ here shoulders the lead role of Jack McMillan, the harried head of the New York Met ballet company. His family legacy is tied to the building and those who learn to dance within its walls, and he’s endlessly trying to figure out how to manage the gargantuan egos around him (his own is not exactly tiny).

Kirby is fantastic in the role, a mixture of stressed live wire and head cheerleader for the company, and he’s our guide into the world (his mother is played to perfection in a supporting turn from ‘Gilmore Girls’ Kelly Bishop).

Charlotte Gainsbourg is Geneviève Lavigne, Jack’s opposite number in Paris, who has her own issues to deal with. Gainsbourg brings energy and brio to the role, and her chemistry with Kirby is palpable.

Lou de Laâge as Cheyenne Toussaint in 'Étoile'. Credit: Philippe Antonello/Prime Video.
Lou de Laâge as Cheyenne Toussaint in ‘Étoile’. Credit: Philippe Antonello/Prime Video.

Lou de Laâge provides a bubble of French sarcasm as ace dancer Cheyenne Toussaint, the lead at the Paris company who is traded for a season to New York. She’s a tornado in a tutu (though rarely seen in one, since her dance costumes are much more subtle) and steals a number of the season’s best scenes, including one where she scares off prospective male dance partners by regaling them with a shocking story about her mother cutting off men’s genitals.

Elsewhere, there are reliable, funny turns from veteran British actors Simon Callow (as Crispin Shamblee, the billionaire of questionable ethics who funds the big trade) and fellow cast member from 1994 rom-com classic ‘Four Weddings and a FuneralDavid Haig as Nicholas Leutwylek, Jack’s hard-living, jovial creative director whose health and partying ways are a constant source of comedy.

And ‘Gilmore Girls’ fans will be happy to see the return of Yanic “Michel” Truesdale as Geneviève’s right hand man Raphaël Marchand. And yes, he displays nuclear levels of sarcasm himself at times.

    Final Thoughts

‘Étoile’ should instantly delight fans of the Sherman-Palladino-verse, and at a time when the arts are under attack in funding terms, it’s nice to celebrate the power of music and dance.

And with another season already commissioned, there’s more to look forward to, and hopefully it’ll undo one of the few mistakes of the season, a final episode plot twist that doesn’t quite make sense.

If you’re a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn’s enigmatically stylistic take on thrillers, dramas and horror movies, you might have been waiting to see when he’d get back into the director’s chair for a new big screen project.

    NHNvABnTEuAFsY5JVGooP5

The man behind ‘Drive,’ ‘Only God Forgives’ and ‘Pusher,’ has been busy working on TV series in the last few years, but thanks to a story in Deadline that reported Charles Melton nabbing a lead role, there was also a tweet from distributor Neon confirming he’s cooking up “something groovy” called ‘Her Private Hell,’ with Melton, Sophie Thatcher, Kristine Froseth and Havana Rose Liu in the cast.

What’s the story of ‘Her Private Hell’?

This being Refn, most of the pertinent details are still being kept quiet for now. But if we know anything about what the man whose last movie was ‘The Neon Demon’ is coming up with, we can expect something dangerous and stylish.

The Danish director recently said his next film would shoot in Tokyo, Japan and would involve “lots of glitter, sex, and violence”.

Which is not all that surprising, since he does love a story set overseas (see: ‘Only God Forgives,’ which dives into Bangkok’s criminal underworld).

What else has Nicolas Winding Refn worked on?

As we mentioned, Refn last made theatrical release ‘The Neon Demon,’ and since then has been channeling his efforts into short films and TV series.

He wrote and directed fantasy/mystery short ‘Touch of Crude’ and last year brought us another short, ‘Beauty Is Not a Sin.’

There was also Prime Video’s 2019 miniseries ‘Too Old to Die Young,’ which starred Miles Teller as Detective Martin Jones, who leads a double life as a killer for hire in Los Angeles’ deadly underground. He suffers an existential crisis which leads him deeper into a blood splattered world of violence.

And in 2022, he was behind Netflix crime thriller series ‘Copenhagen Cowboy,’ which tracks Miu (Angela Bundalovic), who travels through Copenhagen’s criminal netherworld.

Perhaps more surprisingly, he was also the creator and executive producer on a new TV adaptation of Enid Blyton’s children’s book series ‘The Famous Five’ starting 2023.

It’s definitely not what we’d expect from Refn but he explained his reasoning for pursuing the project to Deadline:

“I didn’t read until I was 13 so TV was a big thing for me as an eight-year-old coming to the States. Scooby Doo had something that just magically transported me into this adventure land, so this feels like a very full circle that’s coming to completion. And I’m finally making something that my kids would actually watch. I’ve always liked the concept of not really wanting to be an adult; staying in ‘adventure land’ forever. ‘The Famous Five’ feels like one of the very few things that you literally hand down the generations.”

Best known for his role as Reggie on the CW series ‘Riverdale,’ Melton has been on a roll in scoring roles in critically acclaimed films from interesting directors that kicked off with Netflix drama ‘May December,’ directed by Todd Haynes and also starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore.

Melton earned rave reviews and a Golden Globe nomination.

He most recently starred in the A24 pic ‘Warfare’ from directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza and recently wrapped production on the highly-anticipated second season of feud drama ‘Beef’ at Netflix.

Thatcher, meanwhile, is best known for ‘The Boogeyman,’ ‘Heretic’ and, most recently, ‘Companion,’ and has a starring role in Showtime series ‘Yellowjackets.’

American-Norwegian actor Froseth played a young Betty Ford in Showtime’s ‘The First Lady’ and appeared in Apple TV+ series ‘The Buccaneers.’ Her recent movies include ‘Sharp Stick’ and ‘How to Blow Up a Pipeline.’
Actress and model Havana Rose Liu made her name as the lead in the satirical comedy ‘Bottoms’ and recently appeared in Sundance hit ‘Lurker.’

She’s currently filming Jesse Eisenberg’s untitled musical comedy with A24 alongside Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti and Halle Bailey.

When will ‘Her Private Hell’ be in theaters?

Neither Neon nor Refn are saying anything about when the movie might be landing in theaters, but it could conceivably be ready for release next year.

We’ve been hearing about this one on and off for a while now, with talk of performance capture and at least one cast list floating around.

Yet Variety brings word of a seemingly confirmed all-star cast for the project.

Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Kathleen Turner and Iman Vellani are all reportedly aboard the movie.

Orwell’s 1945 novella tells the story of a group of anthropomorphic farm animals who rebel against their human farmer, hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal, free, and happy. Ultimately, the rebellion is betrayed, and under the dictatorship of a pig named Napoleon, the farm ends up in a far worse state than before.

The author –– who also touched on authoritarian metaphors with ‘1984,’ –– always said that ‘Animal Farm’ reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union, a period when Russia lived under the Marxist–Leninist ideology of Joseph Stalin.

Orwell, a democratic socialist, was a critic of Stalin and hostile to Moscow-directed Stalinism, an attitude that was critically shaped by his experiences during the Barcelona May Days conflicts during the Spanish Civil War.
While Serkis’ ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ director Rupert Wyatt worked on an earlier draft, Nicholas Stoller, who has been responsible for movies such as ‘The Muppets,’ ‘Storks’ and ‘You’re Cordially Invited,’ wrote the actual shooting script.

Who is who in ‘Animal Farm’?

Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

While not every cast member has a confirmed character, we do have a few details…

Rogen is voicing Napoleon, the pig who assumes command of the farm and ends up becoming a despot on four legs (and then two legs).

Culkin is on to be Squealer, a small, white, fat large white pig who serves as Napoleon’s second-in-command and minister of propaganda.

Serkis, meanwhile, is playing Benjamin, a donkey, one of the oldest, wisest animals on the farm, and one of the few who can read properly. He is skeptical, temperamental and cynical: his most frequent remark is, “Life will go on as it has always gone on –– that is, badly.” Many have pointed to Orwell adding something of himself to the character.

Here’s what Serkis has previously said about the project:

“The challenging journey to bring this extraordinary story to the screen has been finally rewarded by the opportunity to partner with the brilliant team at Aniventure and Cinesite. Together we hope to make our version of Orwell’s ever relevant masterpiece, emotionally powerful, humorous, and relatable for all ages. A tale not only for our times, but for generations to come.”

Rogen is currently enjoying great reviews for his Apple TV+ series ‘The Studio,’ about a stressed movie executive trying to navigate art and commerce.

Close has earned eight Oscar nominations for the likes of ‘Fatal Attraction,’ ‘Dangerous Liaisons,’ and ‘The Big Chill,’ but has also been seen in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and TV series ‘Damages.’

Matarazzo is best known for his work on Netflix’s ‘Stranger Things,’ He has also lent his voice to movies including ‘My Father’s Dragon’ and ‘The Angry Birds Movie 2.’

Buscemi might be most famous for movies including ‘Fargo,’ ‘Reservoir Dogs’ and ‘The Big Lebowski,’ and while on TV, he starred in ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ Voice-wise, his recognizable tones were heard in “Monsters, Inc.

Cox starred in Netflix’s ‘Orange is the New Black,’ and has since appeared in ‘Promising Young Woman,’ ‘Inventing Anna’ and ‘Disclosure.’

Culkin recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Jesse Eisenberg’s ‘A Real Pain’ He also won an Emmy for his work as Roman Roy on HBO’s ‘Succession.’

Harrelson is a three-time Oscar nominee whose credits include HBO’s ‘True Detective,’ ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ and ‘The People vs. Larry Flynt.’

Parsons is best known for his work on ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ while Vellani broke out with her role as Kamala Khan in Marvel/Disney+ series ‘Ms. Marvel’ and follow-up movie ‘The Marvels.’

When will ‘Animal Farm’ be on screens?

While Variety’s story makes no mention of a release date (and the movie’s connection to Netflix would not naturally scream theatrical), World of Reel is reporting, and the IMDb lists, a July 11th release for ‘Animal Farm.’

Of course, given the long history of this one, we’ll believe it when it’s in cinemas or on our screens some other way.

    • Emma Mackey will be Jadis, ‘Narnia’s White Witch.
    • Greta Gerwig is directing the movie.
    • The movie has scored a rare theatrical release from Netflix for 2026.

Like the titular kingdom itself, details on the ‘Narnia’ movie planned by Greta Gerwig are slowly starting to drip out, as the information freeze begins to thaw.

    19417

Recently, we learned that Meryl Streep is in talks to play heroic, and somewhat messianic lion character Aslan in the movie, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the forces of darkness have found their leading lady.

Rising star Emma Mackey, known for Netflix’s ‘Sex Education’ series has landed the role of Jadis, the White Witch, seeing off competition from the likes of ‘The Substance’s Margaret Qualley.

It’s the first properly confirmed –– if not officially announced yet –– piece of casting, but there have been plenty of rumors in the past; the likes of Natalie Portman, Daisy Ridley, Brie Larson, and Selena Gomez have all shown interest in Gerwig’s project, and the director talked to recent ‘AnoraOscar winner Mikey Madison about a role.

In case the various film and TV adaptations have passed you by (the TV series was largely on the BBC in the UK, but the movies were big fantasy productions by 20th Century Fox in an era when studios were looking to capitalize on the success of ‘The Lord of the Rings’), the ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ is a series of seven books by British author C.S. Lewis.

Illustrated by Pauline Baynes and originally published between 1950 and 1956, the series is set in the fictional realm of Narnia, a fantasy world of magic, mythical beasts, and talking animals.

It narrates the adventures of various children who play central roles in the unfolding history of the Narnian world. Except in ‘The Horse and His Boy,’ the protagonists are all children from the real world who are magically transported to Narnia, where they are sometimes called upon by Aslan to protect Narnia from evil. The books span the entire history of Narnia, from its creation in ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ to its eventual destruction in ‘The Last Battle.’

Possibly the most famous tome in the set (and the one more normally adapted) is ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.’

As for Jadis, she’s a nasty sort known for freezing Narnia in an endless winter (where Christmas never comes –– boo! hiss! etc.), and turning her enemies into statues. She’s the main antagonist of both ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ and ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.’

What’s the story of Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ movie?

Gerwig’s movie will adapt the sixth novel in the ‘Narnia’ series, the aforementioned ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ which chronologically takes place first in the series. The novel tells the origin of Narnia and is centered on youngsters Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, who discover the magical world through Digory’s uncle’s magic.

Daniel Craig, per Deadline, has been in talks to play Uncle Andrew, while Charli XCX had been linked to potentially playing Jadis –– the role that Mackey has now landed.

If Gerwig’s first ‘Narnia’ movie is a success, she may end up adapting the others.

The biggest development for the movie before casting started was that Gerwig had managed to swing an exclusive two-week Imax global run in 90 countries across 1,000 auditoriums in advance of the movie’s drop on Netflix.

That’s pretty much unheard of in terms of Netflix releases, which has been loathed to give even its biggest talents more than a cursory theatrical release, mostly preferring to drive subscribers to its servers. So it’s a big vote of confidence in the writer/director (but then, again, when you’ve made ‘Barbie,’ it buys you some clout.)

Where else have we seen Emma Mackey?

Mackey, as mentioned before, broke out big playing Maeve Wiley in ‘Sex Education,’ which was a big hit on Netflix and ran between 2019 and 2023.

Since then, she’s exploded into the movie sphere, with the likes of ‘Death on the Nile’ and Emily.

But perhaps most pertinent to this latest job is her role as one of the Barbies in Gerwig’s 2023 smash hit named for the doll.

Coming up, Mackey has indie dramas ‘Hot Milk’ and ‘Alpha’ and will also be seen in James L. Brooks’ new political comedy ‘Ella McCay,’ playing the title character.

She has also been working on J.J. Abrams’ mysterious new blockbuster project.

So, when will Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ movie be on screens?

Narnia will release in Imax on Thanksgiving Day 2026, so November 26th and debut on Netflix on Christmas Day 2026.

‘You’ Season 5 receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Returning to Netflix for its fifth and final season, ‘You’ drags us back into the warped world of Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), the charming sociopath who fixates on finding the perfect someone to share his life, but always seems to end up with blood and death in his life –– and usually at his hands.

With the pressure off to keep the story going, this new run of episodes looks back as well as confronting Joe where he is now.

Given that it started on Lifetime, was renewed for a second season only to suffer the sting of cancellation before those episodes could air, ‘You’ has enjoyed a remarkable life. Picked up by Netflix from that second season onwards, it has since grown into one of the streaming service’s more reliable performers, its patent, potent blend of Penn Badgley’s creepy/smooth voice-over and low key/manic turn as Joe himself and the many twists and turns sparking a fervent fanbase.

Naturally, sticking the landing on a show such as this was always going to be challenging, with multiple dangling story threads to be (somewhat) neatly knotted and a brand new variation on Joe’s obsessive focus on a new particular “You” to be adapted from Caroline Kepnes’ novels. Though “adapted” is used in loose terms these days, as since the first season, the show has diverted considerably, following its own path.

    Script and Direction

The ‘You’ writing team, led by this season’s showrunners Michael Foley and Justin Lo does manage to thread the needle effectively, partly by finding fresh ways for Joe to plan for perfection and to then screw things up royally when he can’t achieve it.

While the shift back to New York might be seen as covering old territory, it allows for a welcome dip back into the history he’s been trying to run from for years, not the least of which is his relationship with Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) which, as his dalliances tend to, ended badly.

And via the set-up of Joe’s seemingly happy relationship with the wealthy Kate Galvin (Charlotte Ritchie), there’s also the chance to explore another facet of his personality: what does Joe do when his problems –– the external ones, at least –– are fixed by her resources.

Of course, nothing in his life can ever be easy, mostly because he’s a diabolical serial murderer with obsessive compulsive tendencies, but the season does have fun with Kate’s extended, squabbling and privileged family.

There’s also the storyline involving Madeline Brewer’s homeless Bronte, a wannabe writer herself who is squatting in the now-closed bookstore from the first season. Naturally, things get complicated.

Main director Silver Tree is back this year and guides the rest of the filmmakers in keeping ‘You’s visual style consistent. The New York backing is a welcome throwback and the show is always shot in interesting, but never distracting fashion.

Badgley is, as always, the core of the show, both on screen and in our heads narrating Joe’s inner monologue. He really has come into his own with this role, and while there are only so many ways for Joe to find or cause trouble, the actor has made him work from day one.

He’s never afraid to look foolish or ridiculous, and he still comes across as a believably romantic figure, bouncing perfectly off of any scene partner and making even the crazier twists and turns function.

As Kate (who was introduced in last season’s England-set storyline), Charlotte Ritchie has proved to be one of the better foils for Badgley, her no-nonsense attitude flipping to anger when she discovers what he’s been up to (again).

Madeline Brewer, probably still most recognizable for her role as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Janine, brings a twitchy, vulnerable energy to the series as a young woman Joe sees as something as a mentee, a person he can guide to greatness. It’s a different dynamic from the usual interactions he has with women, though there’s always the lurking sexual tension between them.

Outside of the main trio, this season’s best turns are from Kate’s spoiled, argumentative and weird family, including a wonderful twin turn from Anna Camp as Maddie and Raegan Lockwood, her half-sisters. Fizzing with very different energies, they’re both great.

    Final Thoughts

‘You’ was always going to be a challenge to end, and while this final season isn’t quite perfect and can’t escape every trap of repeating a beat here and there, it does at least offer a fine conclusion to the show, maintaining the madness while also addressing both the past and the present.

A committed, fun cast and some enjoyable plot turns make it worth watching.

‘The Legend of Ochi’ receives 7.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on April 25th, ‘The Legend of Ochi’ invites you into a world of creatures, heroes, an ages-old conflict and a surprising friendship that proves to be a balm for a splintered family.

First-time director Isaiah Saxon’s movie also answers the question, “what if A24 let someone make a 1980s family film in the studio’s style?”

Will ‘The Legend of Ochi’ make you want to preserve it?

Bringing us to the distinct and quirky world of a tiny, remote village nestled on the island of Carpathia in the Black Sea, ‘The Legend of Ochi’ sets its stall early, with a quick introduction to the narrative in storybook form.

Writer/director Saxon has cooked up something unique, though filled with influences from the Amblin creature features of the 1980s and the stylistically challenging work of Spike Jonze or Michel Gondry. There’s also just a hint of Wes Anderson here, though without his rigid dedication to framing and design.

Yet the filmmaker has also injected plenty of his own heart and feeling into the movie, making this an entertaining crossbreed.

    Script and Direction

Director Isaiah Saxon on the set of 'The Legend of Ochi'. Photo: A24.

Saxon’s screenplay is a rich one, choosing to lean less on dialogue and more on emotion and instinct. Which is not to say ‘Ochi’ is a silent film, far from it –– between the bluster of Willem Dafoe’s Maxim the frustration and wonder of Helena Zengel’s Yuri and the straightforward pragmatism of Emily Watson’s Dasha, there is still plenty of language to enjoy.

Yet the focus is really on Yuri and her budding friendship with the sweet baby Ochi she bonds with after its family is scared off by Maxim’s group of boy soldiers.

While the story might be a basic one about a youngster whose life is changed by the connection she makes with an unlikely ally, it has so much of its own personality that it works.

Director Isaiah Saxon on the set of 'The Legend of Ochi'. Photo: A24.
Director Isaiah Saxon on the set of ‘The Legend of Ochi’. Photo: A24.

It’s also in direction where Saxon shines, collaborating with cinematographer Evan Prosofsky and production designer Jason Kisvarday to whip up a world of his own, both recognizably human but just enough removed from reality to give it its own unique feel.

It all conspires to give the movie as a whole the dynamism of a fairytale crossed with a bleak Eastern European drama –– but don’t get us wrong, this is far from a depressing tale.

    Cast and Performances

Helena Zengel might be best known for her work opposite Tom Hanks in ‘News of the World,’ but ‘The Legend of Ochi’ gives her another welcome spotlight. She’s committed as Yuri, the young girl whose family has been shattered by their encounter with the creatures and her parents’ own attitudes.

Desperate for acceptance, Yuri has also become withdrawn, listening to heavy metal music and spending time alone, worried about the legends of the Ochi creatures that those around her are convinced are the biggest threat they face.

Yet when she finally opens up in her friendship with the young Ochi, Zengel brings her fully to life, and the young woman becomes the hero she’s destined to be.

Willem Dafoe likewise fully portrays the blowhard character of Maxim, a man who’s convinced he has a mission, and is so convinced by it he barely has time for his own daughter. The actor is clearly enjoying a new period of offbeat roles that let him properly embrace his love for character work.

Willem Dafoe in 'The Legend of Ochi'. Photo: A24.
Willem Dafoe in ‘The Legend of Ochi’. Photo: A24.

Similarly, Emily Watson brings her all to Dasha, a woman whose life has been designed around learning more about the Ochi, but has, much like her daughter, withdrawn from the world. She’s a spiky, staunchly no-nonsense person, practical to a fault, but also filled with longing for connection again.

Besides the three main cast members, the world is weaved by the ensemble, especially Maxim’s group of young soldiers, who might not have lines, but add plenty to the movie.

And finally, all credit to everyone involved in the puppets and other creature effects –– the Ochi as a species (a sort of bear/bat/ape hybrid) are realized in truly memorable fashion, making them both clearly natural but also not of our environment. The sound design for them is also impressive, crafting a language of hoots and trills that is distinctive and creative.

    Final Thoughts

Though it might be too languid and unusual for some family audiences, Saxon’s attempt to make a movie for all ages while maintaining the distinct A24 style works. It has its own voice, and a message that, while you’ve heard it in other movies, works here.

They really don’t make ‘em like this often, and it should be cherished.

What’s the plot of ‘The Legend of Ochi’?

In a remote village on the island of Carpathia, a shy farm girl named Yuri (Helena Zengel) is raised to fear an elusive animal species known as Ochi.

But when Yuri discovers a wounded baby Ochi has been left behind, she escapes on the adventure of a lifetime to bring him home.

    • Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood have boarded the ‘Ready or Not’ sequel.
    • Samara Weaving is returning to star.
    • The movie is about to start shooting.

The cameras are about to roll on the follow-up to 2019 horror hit ‘Ready or Not,’ which means that directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett –– part of the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence alongside producers Justin Martinez and Chad Villella –– are getting ready to unleash the chaos of games-turned-deadly once again.

    3pRJTsTfE2pIFAOF13LUf6

Following the success of the original –– $6 million budget with more than $57 million at the box office worldwide, the sequel, which we now know is rather wonderfully titled ‘Ready or Not: Here I Come,’ is adding some cast members to join the established Samara Weaving (who will reprise the role of Grace from the original) and more recent addition Kathryn Newton.

And the new recruits should be familiar to anyone who enjoys genre titles: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Elijah Wood.

They’re not the only fresh faces signing up to work on the new movie: Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand (who, like Newton, worked with the directors on vampire romp ‘Abigail’) and directing legend/occasional actor David Cronenberg are rounding out the cast.

What was the story of ‘Ready or Not’?

The original movie followed a young bride (Weaving’s Grace) as she joined her new husband’s (Mark O’Brien) rich, eccentric family (which included Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, Andie MacDowell) in a time-honored tradition that turned into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their survival.

Spoiler alert in case you didn’t see the film: Weaving’s character was just about the only person to make it out of the game alive.

Which means it’s hard to predict what will happen in the follow-up. Could there be previously unseen family members who come out of the woodwork to threaten Grace? Will she find herself in a different but equally dangerous weird life-threatening situation?

We can only guess at this point, but with writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy returning to craft the chaos, it’ll surely be just as lethal.

Director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, left, and Director Tyler Gillett on the set of Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group’s ‘Scream VI.’

Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are clearly happy to be back at it:

“We’re thrilled to be returning to the world of ‘Ready or Not’ with Samara, Brett, Avery and Andrew and so excited to work with this immensely talented cast and the incredible artists across every department joining the ‘Ready or Not’ family.”

And here’s what Searchlight Pictures president Matthew Greenfield had to say:

“We’re beyond excited to make another film with the phenomenal Radio Silence. With ‘Ready or Not: Here I Come,’ we get to go on another ride with the amazing Samara Weaving, mix in awesome new voices and bring audiences a fresh take that’s every bit as twisted and fun as the first one. This is for those who’ve been waiting, and those who didn’t see it coming.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar is no stranger to the world of sci-fi and fantasy, particularly on the small screen. She’s still best known for playing Buffy Summers, the main character of much-loved series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer,’ and is an executive producer on the rebooted version of the show that is now in development.

Elsewhere on TV, she’s been seen in shows such as ‘Dexter: Original Sin,’ ‘Wolf Pack,’ ‘The Crazy Ones,’ ‘Ringer’ and ‘Buffy’ spin-off ‘Angel.’

Movie-wise, her credits include ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer,’ ‘Scream 2,’ ‘Small Soldiers,’ ‘Simply Irresistible,’ ‘Cruel Intentions,’ the American version of ‘The Grudge’ and as Daphne in the two live-action ‘Scooby Doo’ movies.

She’s attached to star in and produce a new TV series called ‘Bad Summer People.’

As for Wood, he got his start as a child actor, making his movie debut in ‘Back to the Future Part II.’

Since then, he’s been seen in the likes of ‘Forever Young,’ ‘Flipper,’ ‘The Ice Storm,’ ‘Deep Impact,’ ‘The Faculty,’ ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,’ ‘Sin City,’ ‘The Monkey‘ and voiced Mumble in the two ‘Happy Feet’ movies.

But far and away on his resume in terms of impact is his work on Peter Jackson’s three giant ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies, in which he played Frodo Baggins.

Since then, he’s also become something of a producer, helping filmmakers get their work on screens.

His TV credits include ‘Yellowjackets,’ ‘Star Wars: Resistance,’ ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,’ ‘Wilfred’ and ‘Frasier.’

When will ‘Ready or Not: Here I Come’ be in theaters?

Backers Searchlight Pictures haven’t yet announced when the sequel will be causing chaos on screens, but with production gearing up, a 2026 release surely isn’t out of the question.

    • The first look at Netflix’s crime novel adaptation ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ has landed.
    • Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley lead the cast.
    • The movie hits Netflix on 28th August.

We’ve known for around a year now that Netflix and Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the popular ‘Thursday Murder Club’ series by TV host/producer-turned-author Richard Osman is on the way, ever since the film announced casting with Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren, Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie landing the lead roles.

    s9q2deZnwTHZAtRmWmG6c5

That’s quite a murderer’s row of casting –– pun entirely intended, since the book and resulting film will fall cleanly into the cozy murder mystery genre that the UK does so well –– and cements the latest big move for Osman, whose novel series has been a massive bestseller.

With Chris Columbus calling the shots, we now have the first look at the movie, and particularly the leads in the middle of their latest case. And if this one is a success, we can surely expect more.

Other books in the series include ‘The Man Who Died Twice,’ ‘The Bullet That Missed,’ and ‘The Last Devil to Die,’ as well as the newest installment ‘The Impossible Fortune,’ which is released later this year.

Here’s Osman’s statement on his inspiration for the stories –– spending time at his own mother’s retirement home:

“You just sit and chat with these people and they’ve lived these extraordinary lives. You hear these amazing stories and gossip and wisdom. You think, ‘These people are so overlooked.’ The idea that these people with their wisdom and their invisibility would be the perfect people to solve a crime is exactly where ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ comes from. Take these people who are underestimated but who have these incredible skills, put them together, and they can achieve anything.”

What’s the story of ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

Osman’s book, the first in a series follows four irrepressible retirees –– Elizabeth (Mirren), Ron (Brosnan), Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Joyce (Imrie) –– who spend their time solving cold case murders for fun.

When an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn as they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands.

And this is no ordinary group of retirees –– they all bring a particular set of skills to the table. Mirren’s Elizabeth is a former spy, Kingsley’s Ibrahim worked as a psychiatrist, Brosnan’s Ron spend his days as a union activist and Imrie’s Joyce was a nurse.

Here’s what Columbus said about that main cast:

“This is the finest cast I’ve worked with since ‘Potter.’ They’re just so incredibly well-prepared, and it’s because they do everything. They do theater, they do television, they do film, and they’ve developed those sorts of muscles.”

Osman sold the rights to Spielberg’s Amblin company in 2020, shortly after the first book became a hit, and development quietly proceeded along.

So, who did the company chose to adapt a popular series of novels set in the UK it hopes will spawn a successful franchise (and has form working with Spielberg)? That would be Columbus, who helped kick off the gigantic ‘Harry Potter’ film series!

With Osman aboard as an executive producer, production happened last year and the first trailer should be on the way before we know it.

And though the concept might seem more niche than the adventures of a boy wizard, the casting will certainly help push the idea here and beyond.

While it originally looked like Columbus would pull double duty and also write the script, the adaptation instead come courtesy of actor and ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ writer Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote, whose credits include ‘Fear the Walking Dead,’ Apple TV+ series ‘The Crowded Room’ and a season of ‘Killing Eve.’

Who else is appearing in ‘The Thursday Murder Club’?

(L to R) Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie and Ben Kingsley in 'The Thursday Murder Club', which will launch on 28th August 2025 exclusively on Netflix. Photo: Netflix.

Beyond that starry main cast, we also have the likes of Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant and Ingrid Oliver.

And we have a few character details for some of those…

Ackie is Donna De Freitas, a local police officer and good friend to the Club’s members.

Jonathan Pryce plays Stephen, husband to Mirren’s Elizabeth.

Tom Ellis will be as Jason Ritchie, Ron’s (Brosnan) son and a retired boxer.

Sarah Niles has the role of Patrice De Freitas, Donna’s mother.

Ingrid Oliver will be Joanna Meadowcroft, Joyce’s (Imrie) daughter.

When will ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ be on Netflix.

Along with the first look photos, Netflix has announced that the movie will head to its servers on August 28th.

The casting news for the latest ‘Hunger Games’ prequel –– once more based on a book by Suzanne Collins, this time subtitled ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ –– has been ramping up.

We recently learned that Elle Fanning has been linked with the role of a younger Effie Trinket; the effusive stylist as portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the original ‘Hunger Games’ movies. But that has yet to be confirmed.

We do know, however, who has won the lead roles: Joseph Zada and Whitney Peak will play Haymitch Abernathy and Lenore Dove Baird.

Here’s Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman on the casting:

“ ‘The Hunger Games’ franchise has long been a launching pad for remarkable young actors, and Jo and Whitney carry that legacy forward with incredible heart, depth, and fire. After auditioning hundreds of gifted performers from around the world, these two stood out — not just for their talent, but for the emotional truth they brought to these iconic roles. Haymitch has always been a fan favorite, and his origin story is one of the most anticipated in the franchise. His relationship with Lenore Dove is deeply woven into the emotional history of Panem. We can’t wait for fans to experience the story that shaped one of the most compelling characters in the series.”

While the previous prequel took place 64 years before the events of the original trilogy, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ is set 24 years before that trio of Jennifer Lawrence films in the world of Panem, commencing on the morning of the reaping of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell.

Those games are an important event in the canon as the victor was Haymitch Abernathy, the only winner from District 12 before Lawrence’ Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson’s Peeta Mellark’s tie win. Haymitch continues on to become a mentor, a character in the original movies played by Woody Harrelson.

While Lenore is only briefly mentioned in the book ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay,’ she’s a full character in ‘Sunrise on the Reaping.’

Who else has been rumored for ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’?

Kieran Culkin accepts the award for Male Supporting Actor - Motion Picture at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, airing live from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. Zada’s casting puts paid to the rumors that Charlie Plummer, who appears in Lawrence’s Stephen King adaptation ‘The Long Walk,’ due in theaters on September 12th, would take Haymitch role.

That might end up throwing doubt on the idea that Ralph Fiennes will also end up in the movie, to play Coriolanus Snow, as brought to screens by Donald Sutherland in the original films and Tom Blyth in previous prequel effort ‘Songbirds and Snakes.’

And then there was word that Kieran Culkin is mulling an offer to play Caesar Flickerman (the eccentric host character played in the first film series by Stanley Tucci.) We’ll wait and see if there is an official announcement about any of them.

Here’s Suzanne Collins’ statement on the new book and movie:

“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’, I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few… The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day. From the beginning, Lionsgate has been a wonderful home and partner for the ‘Hunger Games’ franchise, and I’m very excited to be collaborating with Adam and the team as we bring this next story to theaters in 2026.”

And here’s Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Adam Fogelson:

“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. We know ‘Hunger Games’ fans worldwide will be spellbound by where Suzanne has focused this next extraordinary story. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later. Like fans around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem.”

When will ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ be in theaters?

Lionsgate already has a release date in place for this one: the studio wants the new movie in theaters on November 20th, 2026.

'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' opens in theaters on November 20, 2026.

If it feels like we’ve had to have the patience of an immortal as we await any real update on Netflix action sequel ‘The Old Guard 2’ –– the last main bit of news on the movie was back in 2022, when Uma Thurman and ‘Crazy Rich AsiansHenry Golding joined the cast.

But at long last, the streaming service has announced when it’ll be headed our way, and posted some pictures of the new movie.

And star Charlize Theron has also commented on the return of her character, the long-lived warrior who in the 2020 original, faced her existence coming to light and a threat to her team as a potential new immortal came on the scene.

Here’s what she had to say:

“There’s something for everyone in this movie: Fans who loved the first film, fans who love the original graphic novels — and brand-new fans who are looking for insane action, grounded and relatable characters, gorgeous locations, and a global cast of superstars.”

And this was her statement on the new developments this time around:

“We’re going to meet some brand-new characters,” she teased. “Quyhn is back and her story continues, and we’re all excited to have Uma Thurman and Henry Golding join us as two key new players in the ‘Old Guard’ universe. Andy and her warriors are back with a renewed sense of purpose. The stakes are even higher now that Andy is mortal and can die — but that certainly won’t keep her out of the action.”

What’s the story of ‘The Old Guard 2’?

Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years.

Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.

The movies adapt the work of comic book/graphic novel writer Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez, who created the world of Andy and the rest.

Back in 2020, the first movie became a pandemic-era hit, as audiences turned to streaming to increasingly meet their entertainment needs. That one was written by Rucka, with Gina Prince-Bythewood in the director’s chair.

For the new one, Victoria Mahoney, who directed 2011’s ‘Yelling to the Sky’ and was first assistant director on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX –– The Rise of Skywalker’, took over directing, with Rucka returning to write, this time alongside Sarah L. Walker.

Here’s what Rucka had to say about the sequel:

“We ended the first film with some radical changes to the status quo. Andy’s mortality has mysteriously left her, Nile has become immortal and joined the group, and Booker’s been punished for his sins by being sent into exile, which is pretty much the worst thing you can do to people who live for hundreds and hundreds of years.”

    And this was Mahoney’s comment:

“My mandate every time we went out the door to scout was, ‘I do not want to visit any locations, routinely seen as an audience member in a number of my favorite films.’ I relentlessly pushed toward the unexpected.”

Who are the new characters in ‘The Old Guard 2’?

While Thurman’s character –– beyond the fact she’ll be a key component in the story –– is a mystery for now, we do know Golding is aboard to play Tuah, an enigmatic figure who has been researching the immortals. Golding brought his own personal background to the character, even going as far as helping to name him.

Golding said this of the role:

“When Victoria Mahoney and I had our first Zoom call, we went over the character, and originally we didn’t have a name for him. That came a little bit later because Vic really wanted to know who I was, and how this character could represent parts of my life. In the end, I suggested his character be called Tuah, which in Malaysian means ‘luck.’ ”

When will ‘The Old Guard 2’ arrive on screens?

‘The Old Guard 2’ will land on Netflix globally on July 2nd.
