    • Sam Neill is the latest recruit for the latest Godzilla and King Kong ‘Monsterverse’ movie.
    • Grant Sputore is directing the new movie.
    • Dan Stevens will be back as vet Trapper.

Given that he’s one of the key figures in the ‘Jurassic Park’ franchise (and who popped back up for ‘Jurassic World: Dominion,’ you might think that Sam Neill would want to avoid trouble with giant beasties in his cinematic career.

Yet here he is again, not back with the genetically returned dinosaurs this time, but instead taking his chances running around with another massive reptile –– Godzilla, who will be back on screens with best pal/frenemy King Kong for the next, still-to-be-officially-titled Monsterverse movie from Legendary and Warner Bros.

What was the story of ‘Godzilla x Kong’?

The movie followed up the explosive showdown of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat of a monstrous white ape hidden within our world, challenging their very existence –– and our own.

It delved further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

The new, untitled effort is still mostly being kept under wraps, but according to the first official details, it’ll follow “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.”

Yep, apparently, there are still some giant threats lurking out there; so the big ape and the giant lizard will have to spring into action once again. But at least they have new some human friends (and potentially foes) to spend time with!

Who is working on the new movie?

Alongside director Grant Sputore (who made his directorial debut with Netflix sci-fi thriller ‘I Am Mother’), the film will have a script from ‘Shang-Chi’ and ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ writer Dave Callaham.

And back in January, Deadline reported that the movie saw its first piece of casting as Kaitlyn Dever locked in a deal to star.

Best known for her roles in TV limited series ‘Dopesick’ and the 2019 movie ‘Booksmart,’ Dever has a key role in the second season of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us,’ which just returned to screens.

Kaitlyn Dever in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2. Photograph by Liane Hentscher/HBO.

Details on her character are also, like much of the movie, a mystery, though apparently it represents a renewed push to add in solid characters, which has been a common complaint of especially some of the more recent Monsterverse efforts.

We can also add to the new recruit list the likes of ‘Unbroken’ and ‘Back to Black’s Jack O’Connell and Delroy Lindo, most recently seen in ‘The Harder They Fall’ and headed our way in Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ this week. Also aboard? Alycia Debnam-Carey, who last appeared in Netflix wellness scam drama ‘Apple Cider Vinegar,’ which coincidentally starred Dever.

As with Dever and Modine, we don’t yet know anyone is playing, but Dan Stevens is confirmed to reprise his role as Trapper, the cocky, thrill-seeking veterinarian who helps Kong when the giant ape is injured.

Where else have I seen Sam Neill?

(L to R) Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum), Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) and Kayla Watts (DeWanda Wise) in 'Jurassic World Dominion,' co-written and directed by Colin Trevorrow.

As we mentioned above, Neill may still be best known for his role as warm-but-grouchy paleontologist Alan Grant in various ‘Jurassic’ movies.

Yet the versatile actor has enjoyed a long, successful career hopping between the giant likes of those blockbusters and more indie work.

In the last few years alone, he’s been seen in movies such as ‘Bring Him to Me,’ ‘The Portable Door’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’

Further back, he’s been part of the cast for ‘The Piano,’ ‘The Dish’ and ‘Event Horizon.’ On TV, his back catalogue includes Apple TV+ series ‘Invasion,’ ‘Apples Never Fall’ and ‘Peaky Blinders.’

What has happened with the Monsterverse so far?

Already around for a decade, Legendary’s Monsterverse follows humanity’s battle to survive in a world facing a catastrophic new reality –– the monsters of our myths and legends are real.

It all kicked off with ‘Godzilla’ in 2014 and continued through 2017’s ‘Kong: Skull Island,’ 2019’s ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters,’ 2021’s ‘Godzilla Vs. Kong’ and last year’s record-breaking ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.’

The Monsterverse has grossed more than $2.5 billion at the global box office and has expanded onto smaller screens via ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ for Apple TV+, which has been renewed for a second season.

When will the new Monsterverse movie be on screens?

The movie is currently scheduled for release on March 26th, 2027. Let’s hope theaters have time to reinforce their walls. And that it doesn’t inspire kaiju to start their own version of the ‘Minecraft’ audience chaos when it opens.

Taron Egerton continues to be a busy man, and has been adding more projects where he’s a producer as well as star.

He’s also back with Apple TV+, where he found success with ‘Black Bird,’ and this time he’s found a project that is –– pun entirely intended and unapologetically deployed –– hot.

‘Smoke’ is a new crime drama that will see Egerton in a lead role alongside ‘The Order’s Jurnee Smollett.

The eight-episode new series will see them digging into a complicated arson case (more on that below).

‘Smoke’ follows a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.

Egerton stars as the man with the talent for digging into fire crimes, Dave Gudsen, while Smollett is police detective Michelle Calderone.

Perhaps most excitingly, especially to crime genre fans, the show has writing legend Dennis Lehane crafting all the episodes. Lehane, of course, already worked on ‘Black Bird’ with Egerton.

And like that, this is inspired by a true story. Here, it’s a fictional tale inspired by truth.media’s acclaimed ‘Firebug’ podcast, which was hosted by Oscar and Emmy-winner Kary Antholis.

On the directing side of things, Kari Skogland (who produces alongside Egerton and Lehane), Joe Chappelle, and Jim McKay will call the shots.

Taron Egerton in ‘Smoke,’ premiering June 27, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Egerton is typically in demand at the moment –– he was last on screens in Netflix airport thriller ‘Carry-On’ and has a few projects on the go in addition to ‘Smoke.’

He recently shot director Nick Rowland’s movie ‘She Rides Shotgun,’ about a girl who is marked for death and must fight and steal to stay alive, learning from the most frightening man she knows: her father.

The film, an adaptation of Jordan Harper’s award-winning novel, will see Egerton as Nate the father figure, a former gang member whose old cohorts put a hit on his family when he gets out of prison.

There’s also a new action movie from filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur called ‘Apex’, with Charlize Theron as an adrenaline junkie who sets out to conquer a menacing river, only to discover that nature isn’t the only thing out for blood. Egerton is filming that one right now, with Eric Bana also in the cast.

And finally, we have the ever-present possibility of a third ‘Kingsman’ movie, with Matthew Vaughn aiming to wrap up his spy trilogy with ‘Kingsman: The Blue Blood.’

Yet following some financial flops for the director, the 20th Century Studios team seemed to indicate that we might not see the final ride for Egerton’s Eggsy and Colin Firth’s Harry Hart.

But Egerton has been more positive on the subject, saying this to Screen Rant:

“I don’t know, and I don’t want to speak out of school, but I don’t think that necessarily means that we won;t do it. I think Matthew and I very much want to do one more. I want to do one more. And so while, you know, we don’t have a shoot date yet, I think it could still happen.”

That said, we’ve yet to see real forward movement, so file this under “maybe” for now.

Where else can we see Jurnee Smollett?

Smollett, who was most recently found in another law enforcement role, this time with the FBI, in ‘The Order.’

Coming up, she is preparing to work on ‘Sunflower,’ a new thriller about two women struggling to escape from a college professor who holds them hostage on a prison-like sunflower farm.

Scott Speedman is co-starring in that movie, which comes from writer/director Misha Green, who worked with Smollett on ‘Lovecraft Country.’

When will ‘Smoke’ arrive on the Apple TV+ service?

Apple has confirmed that the first two episodes will launch on Friday, June 27th, with a new episode weekly until the finale on August 8th.

  • ‘The Bodyguard’ Remake in the Works

    Preview:

    • A remake of ‘The Bodyguard’ is in development at Warner Bros.
    • ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour’ director Sam Wrench is in charge of the movie.
    • No roles have been cast yet.

It has one of the most iconic movie posters and boasts one of the best-known romantic songs in “I Will Always Love You.”

So you can understand that, despite the reaction it is sure to provoke from fans of the original, Warner Bros. has decided that the time is right to develop a remake of ‘The Bodyguard.’

    7483

First broken via a Deadline interview with current Warner Bros. co-chairman/CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, the plan is now in place for Sam Wrench to direct and Jonathan A. Abrams to write the script.

There will of course be pressure for the new movie to live up to the impact of the original, but we’ve seen a few remakes manage that trick, including ‘Speak No Evil,’ ‘A Star is Born,’ and the ‘Ocean’s movies, even if the success rate is not high.

(L to R) Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in 1992’s ‘The Bodyguard’. Photo: Warner Bros.

The 1992 movie followed Kevin Costner’s former Secret Service agent Frank Farmer, who takes a job as bodyguard to famous R&B star Rachel Marron, played by Whitney Houston at the height of her music fame.

Drama, romance and a thriller plot ensue as Frank tries to sniff out a dangerous stalker, with the final act playing out as Rachel wins the Best Picture Academy Award.

Mick Jackson directed the pic, written by ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’s Lawrence Kasdan.

In addition to a $411 million worldwide box office, the movie was nominated for two Oscars for its songs, and its soundtrack became the best-selling of all time (and the best-selling album by a female artist of all time). Its hits included “I Will Always Love You,” “I’m Every Woman,” “Queen of the Night” and the Oscar-nominated “Run to You” and “I Have Nothing.”

So you can see why Warner Bros., which has been busy ferreting around its back catalogue for titles it can potentially remake, might see this as an attractive proposition.

Of course, there is an argument for not remaking such a beloved movie, even as it has long been turned into other mediums including a stage musical. But we live in an age when almost any movie is fair game.

What else has Sam Wrench worked on?

Scene from 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.' Photo: AMC Theatres.
Scene from ‘Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Movie.’ Photo: AMC Theatres.

Wrench has previously been best known for wrangling live musical events and movies based on them, including for the superstar likes of BTS, Billie Eilish, Brandi Carlile and, most recently, Taylor Swift.

In fact, ‘The Eras Tour’ became a big box office hit, earning more than $261 million in an exclusive deal between Swift and AMC theaters.

Which means that while Wrench would technically be making his narrative feature debut with the new ‘Bodyguard,’ he certainly knows a thing or two about staging musical sequences, which will form a fair part of the movie.

And given his connection to Swift, could we see him reaching out to the global megastar to make one of her rare appearances in front of a movie camera to take on the role of the character originally played by Houston?

It’s certainly a possibility, but given her busy schedule and the rigors of having worked on the Eras Tour (which only wrapped up this past December), we’d guess she may limit her interaction to contributing a song to the soundtrack.

As to who could potentially star in the movie, it may still go for a big name from the music world to replicate the success of having Houston in the lead. As for the Costner role, it’s likely to be a much in-demand part, but is Glen Powell’s phone already ringing (probably not yet, but chances are he’ll be in the mix).

Where else have I seen Jonathan Abrams’ work?

For his part, Abrams’ one produced scriptwriting credit is Clint Eastwood’s ‘Juror #2’ from last year.

Upcoming, he wrote comedy movie ‘Destination Wedding,’ and has written the script for a new TV series called ‘Bishop,’ about a mysterious hotel concierge in New Orleans who becomes the de facto “fixer” for the country’s largest family-owned hotel.

He also worked as a producer on 2013’s prison pic ‘Escape Plan’.

When will ‘The Bodyguard’ be on screens?

Given that this one is still at a relatively early stage, the studio has yet to announce when any new ‘Bodyguard’ might head to screens. But if it comes together this year, there’s a chance we could see it arrive in 2026.

  • ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ TV Series in Development

    • A new ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ TV series is in the works.
    • It’ll adapt Wang DuLu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy novels.
    • Jason Ning and Ron Moore are working on the show.

Back in the year 2000, Ang Lee brought sweeping romance and impressive fight scenes to screens, adapting Wang DuLu’s Crane-Iron Pentalogy series of books to Oscar-winning effect in ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’

    NEKGTEIsmKcyjK5qscj7z

It was followed by a straight-to-home entertainment sequel, ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny,’ released in 2016 and directed by Yuen Wo-ping, who was the action choreographer for the original.

But since then, there hasn’t been much movement on other adaptations, at least until now, with word via Deadline that Prime Video is moving forward with its TV take, which has been in development since 2022 with Jason Ning involved as executive producer.

Ning, who created ‘The Brothers Sun’ for Netflix, is under a deal with Sony Pictures Television, which owns the rights to the ‘Crouching Tiger’ novels after releasing the Lee movie, and they in turn are partnered up with Prime Video.

New to the project is experienced showrunner Ronald D. Moore, who got his start writing ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ and has since gone on to the likes of the successful ‘Battlestar Galactica’ re-imagining and ‘For All Mankind,’ and has period drama experience via ‘Outlander’.

Here’s the official logline from the series:

“Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon follows Shu Lien and Mu Bai, two star-crossed warriors, as they struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity — caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”

And with five novels in existence, there is plenty of material for the series to draw from –– the 2000 movie, in fact, took elements from several books in Wang DuLu’s work.

Who could star in the ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ TV series?

(L to R) Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh in ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’. Photo: Sony Pictures Classics.

The show has yet to reach the casting stage; or at least to the point where deals are starting to be made.

Michelle Yeoh and Chow Yun-Fat played the two lead roles in Lee’s film, which also starred Zhang Ziyi.

While it’s likely that the series would want to start afresh with a group of new talent or rising stars, but given that Yeoh was one of the leads in Ning’s ‘The Brothers Sun,’ there’s a good chance she’ll be involved in some way, even if she doesn’t reprise her role from the movie directly.

Whoever does end up in the ensemble will need to be ready for extensive training and preparation, since a hallmark of the movie –– and therefore presumably the show –– is the complicated, balletic wuxia fighting scenes.

What else is Jason Ning working on?

Ning had been part of the team developing Marvel Comics property ‘Silk: Spider Society’ into a series alongside ‘The Walking Dead’ veteran Angela Kang, but that was scrapped by Sony and Amazon last year.

Ning’s previous TV jobs include writing gigs on ‘Lucifer,’ ‘The Expanse and ‘Mrs. Davis,’ and he’s also developing a series based on Wesley Chu’s novel series ‘War Arts Saga,’ set in a world where martial arts are magic, and a grandmaster takes a spoiled would-be hero under her wing to fulfill his destiny of defeating an immortal god-king and ending a centuries-long war.

Uta Briesewitz is attached to that one as director, but it’s in limbo right now.

What else does Ronald D. Moore have in the works?

The busy Moore has several projects that’s either helped to launch or is overseeing right now, including ‘Outlander’ prequel series ‘Blood of My Blood’ (due on Starz this year) and ‘Star City,’ a spin-off that re-imagines the ‘For All Mankind’ alt-history story through the lens of the Russian space service.

He’s also the head writer on a series adaptation of the ‘God of War’ video games and has been developing a show that offers a fresh take on the ‘Swiss Family Robinson’ story for Disney, with ‘Wicked’ director Jon M. Chu board.

When will the ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ TV series hit screens?

With the deal just done and no word on casting or any date for shooting, expect this one to wait a while before arriving on Prime Video’s servers.

    • Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey star in the show.

With the second season of much-loved video game adaptation ‘The Last of Us’ landing on screens to plenty of acclaim this past weekend, it would appear that HBO’s belief in the show is at an all-time high.

    JcSvNCECyHBj7e90ILkVH6

The channel has handed down a third-season order for the show, which adapts the video game created by Neil Druckmann and his team at Naughty Dog Studios.

‘The Last of Us’ series is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by people infected by a fungus that turns them into mutated zombie-like creatures, and stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

‘The Last of Us’ takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, played by Pascal, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie (Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Producers/Showrunners Craig Mazin (‘Chernobyl’) and Druckmann have yet to detail exactly what the new season will cover.

The first season of ‘The Last of Us’ covered much of games ‘The Last of Us Part I’ and ‘The Last of Us: Left Behind’, while Season 2 will cover part of ‘The Last of Us Part II,’ kicking off with a five-year time jump as in the video game.

Ellie, 14 in Part I and Left Behind, is 19 in Part II, and she and Joel have been living in Jackson since they left the Fireflies in Salt Lake City.

While zero details have been revealed on Season 3, we can expect it to tackle more of ‘The Last of Us Part II.’

Who else is in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2?

Kaitlyn Dever in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2. Photograph by Liane Hentscher/HBO.

With Pascal and Ramsey both back for the new season, the cast of the show is growing and changing as their quest continues.

Gabriel Luna, Kaitlyn Dever, Young Mazino, Isabela Merced and Catherine O’Hara are all part of the new season’s cast.

On top of them, Jeffrey Wright is playing Isaac, who in the game is the quietly powerful leader of a large militia group, known as the Washington Liberation Front. They sought liberty but instead have become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.

Wright represents the second actor to reprise a voice role from the game, after Merle Dandridge did the same for her character Marlene in Season 1.

And while we won’t get too deeply into it, if Season 2 covers certain events, the cast will be a little smaller when Season 3 dawns. But again; without having seen the whole season, we can’t speak to that, and won’t spoil anything for those who approach the story from the point of view of the show alone and haven’t played the game.

With the renewal now official (hardly a surprise given the success of the show so far and the early reactions to Season 2 even before its launch), HBO and the show’s creators have weighed in on its return.

Here’s Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming:

“It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ is. Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up and we’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.”

And this is what Craig Mazin had to say:

“We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of ‘The Last of Us’ with season three!”

Finally, this is the quote from Druckmann:

“To see ‘The Last of Us’ brought to life so beautifully and faithfully has been a career highlight for me, and I am grateful for the fans’ enthusiastic and overwhelming support. Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of ‘The Last of Us’!”

When will ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 be on screens?

We’ll all need some patience. Season 2 has just launched this past weekend, and while we’re relatively sure the team knew that Season 3 would be a done deal, there is still scripting and filming work to be done.

With luck, we should have the new season next year, though ‘The Last of Us’ has been such a good thing so far that it’s worth waiting for.

    Preview:

    • HBO is finally confirming the first cast for its ‘Harry Potter’ TV series.
    • John Lithgow, Janet McTeer and Nick Frost are among them.
    • The show aims to adapt the books across the next several years.

We’ve spent the last few months hearing about actors scoring roles in HBO’s ambitious, giant planned small screen adaptation of the ‘Harry Potter’ book series.

All through it –– even as John Lithgow in particular openly admitted he was part of the show –– the company has stuck to its “no comment” stance, presumably biding time while schedules are figured out (this thing is quite the time commitment if it works beyond the first season) and contacts are worked through.

Yet now it’s officially official, with parent company Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO releasing word that Lithgow (who is playing headmaster Albus Dumbledore), alongside Janet McTeer (Professor Minerva McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (as Severus Snape) and Nick Frost (bringing gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid to screens) will make up part of the series regular cohort.

In addition, the HBO release adds stage actor Luke Thallon (whose main screen credit so far has been a tiny role in 2018’s ‘The Favourite’) and UK comedian and actor Paul Whitehouse (who US audiences might know from ‘The Death of Stalin’ but also has ‘Potter’ form after playing Sir Cadogan in third movie ‘The Prisoner of Azkaban‘), as recurring guest stars.

Thallon has nabbed the role of Professor Quirinus Quirrell, a key part of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,’ while Whitehouse is set to play Hogwarts caretaker and grumpy cat owner Argus Filch, who pops up throughout the stories.

Here’s the official statement on the initial casting from showrunner Francesca Gardiner and main director/executive producer Mark Mylod:

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch. We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”

We’re still waiting, of course, to find out which three young actors have scored the key roles of Harry, Ron and Hermione following a giant casting call, while other important characters such as Sirius Black and Remus Lupin will presumably be cast once the series reaches their entrances.

Here’s the official HBO statement on the show:

“The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved ‘Harry Potter’ book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling. It will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters ‘Harry Potter’ fans have loved for over twenty-five years. Each season will bring ‘Harry Potter’ and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Gardiner scored the job of showrunner after HBO conducted an extensive search for the right writer/producer. Mylod will direct multiple episodes of the series, having worked on the likes of ‘Succession’ and ‘Game of Thrones.’

The show will be shot at Warner Bros.’ Leavesden Studios facility outside London in the UK, where the movies were made.

Who else has been rumored for the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series?

Lithgow’s ‘Conclave’ co-star Ralph Fiennes –– who was the villainous Voldemort in four of the seven ‘Potter’ movies –– suggesting someone who could take over that character (even though he’s said he’d be willing to return if asked).

Following speculation of ‘OppenheimerOscar winner Cillian Murphy taking it on, Fiennes was asked on TV show ‘Watch What Happens Live’ about the possibility. This is what he said:

“Cillian is a fantastic actor. That’s a wonderful suggestion. I would be all in favor of Cillian. Yeah.”

We’d add at this point that The Hollywood Reporter’s sources have poured cold water on the idea of Murphy even being considered right now. Which is not to say he isn’t, but that no one wants to talk yet.

The biggest issue for getting more famous –– and therefore busier –– actors involved is the commitment issue; those taking part would likely be contracted for a good 10 years or so. But we can imagine HBO conjuring hefty cash offers to name stars to entice them.

What about the J.K. Rowling issue?

(L to R) Emma Watson and J. K. Rowling at the premiere of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.' Photo: Warner Bros.

‘Potter’ creator and original novelist J.K. Rowling is a big consideration here, since A) she has final say on anything adapted from the books and B) is a problematic figure given her negative views on trans people.

This was HBO’s recent statement on the issue:

“Warner Bros. has been working with J.K. Rowling and in the ‘Harry Potter’ business for over 20 years. Her contribution has been invaluable. We are proud to once again tell the story of ‘Harry Potter’ — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance. J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

Fiennes (yes, him again) weighed in on the issue when talking to The New York Times in 2022:

“J.K. Rowling has written these great books about empowerment, about young children finding themselves as human beings. It’s about how you become a better, stronger, more morally centered human being. The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, über-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’ And I understand where she’s coming from. Even though I’m not a woman.”

When will the ‘Harry Potter’ series be on screens?

HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently said that he expects the show to debut in late 2026 or early 2027, which makes sense given that production isn’t likely to start until later this year.

‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 receives 8 out of 10 stars.

Returning to Netflix on April 10th for a seventh season of anthology tales blending techno-terror with emotion, ‘Black Mirror’ proves it still has what it counts as the modern-day equivalent of ‘The Outer Limits’ or ‘The Twilight Zone.’

And this time, with six episodes in play, there is a greater scope for stories to be told compared to some of the more compacted recent seasons. It’s also reassuring that, after some slightly less effective entries, the seventh season finds the show handily back on form.

‘Black Mirror’ has always been about more than simply darkly shaded warnings about the use (and mis-use of technology); it’s about humans and how we interact, also. Season 7 definitely lives up to that aim, offering some persuasive tales of those whose lives are impacted by innovations in medical science or tech in general.

It’s also welcome to see the series following up on a couple of popular episodes –– while the sequel to ‘USS Callister’ doesn’t have the sting of the original, for example, it expands it in interesting ways and deepens one of the characters in the process.

    Script and Direction

Charlie Brooker, the show’s co-creator, once again leads the writing team here, working alongside the likes of Bisha K. Ali, Ella Road, William Bridges, and Bekka Bowling to put out more gripping tales. A highlight of the writing this time in the first entry, ‘Common People,’ with its spin on ever-changing subscription services this time applied to live-saving medical treatment. It’s emotional and thorough, and heartbreaking when needed.

On a more darkly funny level is ‘Bête Noire,’ with its vengeful story of old resentments curdled into fresh vengeance. We won’t reveal exactly what is going on, but the answer is a fun one.

Directing wise, it’s reassuring to see such filmmakers as David Slade and Toby Hynes brought back to handle the two episodes –– ‘Plaything’ and ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ that call back to their previous work.

All in all, though, the direction is superb –– stylish when required, subtle at other times.

As has become commonplace for ‘Black Mirror,’ Season 7 boasts a quality ensemble for its various stories.

Chris O’Dowd and Rashida Jones are at the heart of ‘Common People’ and put in turns that are funny, real and packed full of feeling, but not forgetting Tracee Ellis Ross as their company rep, who keeps pushing new updates with a smile, even when the couple struggle to keep up financially.

‘Hotel Reverie’ blends classic Hollywood with high-tech and features lovely work from Emma Corrin and Issa Rae, with fine support from Awkwafina and Harriet Walter.

Peter Capaldi in 'Black Mirror' season 7. Photo: Nick Wall/Netflix.

‘Plaything’ hinges on the intense energy of Peter Capaldi, who really sells the focus of a man on a mission, but kudos also to Lewis Gribben, who plays the same character 40 years earlier.

‘Eulogy’ boasts excellent work from Paul Giamatti as a man haunted by grief and memory (literally in this case) and grapples with tough truths about his past.

And ‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’ of course re-introduces us to the brave, digi-DNA copies of the crew (and their human counterparts), with Cristin Milioti, Jimmi Simpson and Jesse Plemons all fantastic returning to their roles.

    Final Thoughts

While it has the usual highs and lows as in any ‘Black Mirror’ season, the highs far outweigh the lows, and for every episode that doesn’t shine as brightly (‘Bête Noire’ is a fun concept but doesn’t totally deliver), there is a wonderful show waiting to be injected into your eyes.

Oh, and fans of the series will want to be on the lookout for a recurring motif; let’s just say it starts with the letter “J”…

What’s the story of ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7?

The six-episode season of ‘Black Mirror’ features the following stories…

‘Common People’: When a medical emergency leaves schoolteacher Amanda fighting for her life, her desperate husband Mike signs her up for Rivermind, a high-tech system that will keep her alive –– but at a cost…

‘Bête Noire’: Confectionary whizz kid Maria is unnerved when her former schoolmate Verity joins the company she works at — because there’s something altogether odd about Verity, something only Maria seems to notice…

‘Hotel Reverie’: A high-tech, unusually immersive remake of a vintage British film sends Hollywood A-list star Brandy Friday into another dimension, where she must stick to the script if she ever wants to make it home.

‘Plaything’: In a near-future London, an eccentric murder suspect is linked to an unusual video game from the 1990s — a game populated by cute, evolving artificial lifeforms.

‘Eulogy’: An isolated man is introduced to a groundbreaking system that allows its users to literally step inside old photographs — stirring powerful emotions in the process.

‘USS Callister: Into Infinity’: Robert Daly is dead, but now the crew of the USS Callister –– led by Captain Nanette Cole –– are stranded in an infinite virtual universe, fighting for survival against 30 million players.

‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 receives 8.5 out of 10 stars.

Back on Max for its second season and debut the first episode on April 13th, ‘The Last of Us’ plunges us back into the chaotic, carefully-crafted world adapted from the Naughty Dog game originally created by Neil Druckmann and his team.

Now Druckmann, working again with co-showrunner Craig Mazin, is starting the even more perplexing process of adapting ‘The Last of Us Part II,’ which deepened the story of the game and its hard-bitten survivors.

Perhaps the biggest question, and indeed challenge facing the new season of the show is whether it can live up to the praise and success of the first. It’s a situation that co-creator Neil Druckmann has faced before in this universe, and it should give fans of the show who never played the game hope that by all regards, ‘The Last of Us Part II’ is seen as superior to the original, much-loved game.

Of course, season 2 of a TV series, even one with a pedigree such as this, is a different beast. Yet Druckmann and Mazin have shown remarkable patience and care with their work, bring what works about the game to the screen by making the changes necessary to ensure it functions in a different, less interactive medium.

And it’s reassuring to report that, on the basis of the first episode of the new season, ‘Future Days,’ their efforts continue to pay off.

    Script and Direction

While Mazin and Druckmann do the lion’s share of the writing on the show, the first episode features a script by Halley Wegryn Gross that has a lot of work to do.

Though there is a brief moment set right at the end of Season 1, the majority of the episode takes place five years later. With the survivors’ base in Jackson, Wyoming (a former ski resort repurposed as a fortress against the fungi-ravaged zombie-like mutants that prowl the lands between encampments) up and running as a functioning community.

That means we not only have to be re-introduced to Pedro Pascal’s tough-but-heartfelt Joel and Bella Ramsey’s headstrong Ellie (now even more so as a 19-year-old brawler itching to take on more responsibility), but fill us in on all the other characters.

Bella Ramsey in 'The Last of Us' Season 2. Photograph by Liane Hentscher/HBO.
Bella Ramsey in ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2. Photograph by Liane Hentscher/HBO.

The script for ‘Future Days’ is busy but finds time for everyone –– even deviating from the game in introducing and immediately identifying Kaitlyn Dever’s Abby Anders as someone who is looking to enact vengeance on Joel for his actions in the final episode of the previous season.

Another challenge for the script is to start building towards what game players already know is coming either in this season or the next (both are drawn from ‘The Last of Us Part II’ game) –– no spoilers, but things don’t end well.

Mazin doesn’t have that many directing credits to his name despite years in the feature business, and even with his involvement in the series, this is the first time he has called the shots on an episode. But he shows a steady hand and a clear eye for what makes the show work, and if the time jump is a jolt, the style is not.

Anchored by Pascal and Ramsey, the episode doesn’t forget to give other performers some solid work.

Pascal is, of course, still great as the haunted, soulful Joel, the man who never expected to find a surrogate daughter after losing his own in the early days of the pandemic that rocked the world. Here, we find him in problem-solving mode, and Pascal brings out all the tones, including his sly sense of humor.

Ramsey has even more to prove with the more grown version of Ellie, but they handle the job fluidly, this tougher, less childish version of the character finding new connections while still dealing with old issues.

Among the newcomers we meet, Dever makes and impact with relatively little screen time as Abby, Isabel Merced is a shiny delight as Dina and Catherine O’Hara gets to go to some deeper places as Gail, who is tending to Joel’s mental health.

Though it remains to be seen how the rest of the season and beyond plays out, the first episode of ‘The Last of Us’ new season is a welcomer reminder of why this is one of the best shows on TV.

There is so much solid character work going on from both sides of the camera, and the look of the show, including some truly scary mushroom mutants, is still superb.

‘The Luckiest Man in America’ receives 6.5 out of 10 stars.

Opening in theaters on April 4th, ‘The Luckiest Man in America’ takes a real-life event as the basis for a comedy drama about a quiz show champ whose winning ways come into question during one fraught day filming ‘Press Your Luck.’

Paul Walter Hauser leads a considerable cast for the new movie, directed by Samir Oliveros from a script he wrote with Maggie Briggs.

While younger (well, younger-ish, the figures for the likes of Gen Z and Gen Alpha watching a legacy game show are probably not healthy) audiences know ‘Press Your Luck’ as the quiz show hosted by Elizabeth Banks, that version does sometimes call back to the history of the series, which stretches back to 1983.

This new movie charts a real-life event that happened during a taping on the show, when the most unlikely player somehow managed to get on to set as a contestant. It’s certainly a strange story, and Samir Oliveros’ take on does include some invention wrapped around the basic facts. He only had the actual episode recording to go on (which is on YouTube), so there are scenes set in the control room and before Michael Larson gets on the set that are entirely fabricated.

Yet the whole does hang together decently, the tone pretty much consistent and the ticking clock quality of the day on set giving the movie as a whole a propulsive quality. Yet it’s also burdened with a story that doesn’t quite work and despite some impressive work from a talented cast, not everything functions as it should.

    Script and Direction

(L to R) Brian Geraghty and Paul Walter Hauser in Samir Oliveros’ 'The Luckiest Man in America'. Photo Credit: Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.

Director Oliveros and his co-writer Briggs (who came up with the story –– at least the fictional chunks), have put plenty of work into figuring out the chaos that must have erupted between executives and other staff when Larson’s winning streak really got moving and the bosses started to suspect that he might have figured out the patterns of the board to make sure he kept winning and not land on the show’s famous “Whammy” characters, the little red cartoons who gleefully take any winnings (and ultimately banish a player from the show if they hit more than four).

All of that is clearly conveyed in the script, and while Michael Larson was obviously a real person, it’s impressive how much detail the writers have filled in about him and those who are both on stage and off it. The issue comes when the story starts to run out of steam and little and even Larson isn’t well served.

Oliveros’ directing style does well mimicking the look of the series back in the day, and segues effectively between an authentic 1980s style and the feel of the behind-the-scenes areas.

    Cast and Performances

Paul Walter Hauser is a big part of why the movie succeeds at all. As Larson, he’s a complicated mix of quirky loner and desperate grifter. And he’s excellent as both sides of the character –– at once loveable and weird, but always believable.

It’s a pretty perfect match for the actor’s skillset, since Hauser has bringing people like these to screens for years now, and he’s also had some experience walking the fine line when playing characters based on real-world personalities.

You’ll completely buy him as this oddball, ice cream truck-driving obsessive, whose past life is littered with money making schemes and a marriage that is seriously on the rocks.

Twitchy and nervous when it starts to appear that his appearance on the show might just be his latest scheme, Hauser is great portraying Larson.

He’s matched by David Strathairn (no stranger to a based-on-truth story himself), the veteran actor playing egotistical, calculating executive producer Bill Carruthers. He’s all strutting peacock-disguised-as-homey-man-of-the-people, who makes the decision to override his casting team to invite Larson onto the show after the potential contestant takes someone else’s audition spot.

David Strathairn in Samir Oliveros’ ‘The Luckiest Man in America’. Photo Credit: Courtesy of IFC Films. An IFC Films Release.

Strathairn is also great at portraying Carruthers’ flop sweat as Larson’s winning ways continue as he’s forced to justify the decision to those who write his paychecks.

Walton Goggins makes an impact as Peter Tomarken, the host of the show, who becomes increasingly worried for his own job and starts to improvise as Larson’s earnings rack up. Playing one of the few well-known people in the story, he brings his own flair to it, but doesn’t deviate so far from the recognizable version of Tomarken.

Shamier Anderson plays Chuck, the head of casting for the show, who buts heads with Carruthers’ over Larson’s last-minute selection. Anderson does excellent work as the character, fully channeling his frustration while keeping him relatable.

In smaller roles, we have ‘Game of Thrones’ veteran Maisie Williams as Sylvia, a fresh-faced production assistant on the show who wrangles the talent and conducts tours. She’s fine in a more limited scope. Likewise Brian Geraghty and Patti Harrison as Larson’s fellow contestants.

Finally, Haley Bennett doesn’t have too much to do as Larson’s wife, but she brings some healthy, genuine emotion to the proceedings.

Given how fascinating the real-life story of the movie is, it’s frustrating at times that it rarely feels like ‘The Luckiest Man in America’ takes full advantage of it.

Yet it’s still a well-considered take on a particular piece of quiz show history.

What is the plot of ‘The Luckiest Man in America’?

1984, Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser), an unemployed ice-cream truck driver from Ohio, steps onto the game show “Press Your Luck” harboring a secret: the key to endless amounts of money. But his winning streak gets threatened when the executives in the control room start to uncover his real motivations.

    Preview:

    • Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ series is official at Amazon and Prime Video.
    • Summer H. Howell is close to a deal for the lead role.
    • The show will be a new adaptation of the classic Stephen King story.

For the last few years, aside from his big screen work, Mike Flanagan has been creating compelling horror tales for Netflix, including the likes of ‘Midnight Mass,’ ‘The Haunting of Hill House,’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’

But back in 2022, Amazon tempted Flanagan and producing partner Trevor Macy’s company Intrepid Pictures away with a lucrative, exclusive, multi-year overall series deal.

This is what the duo said at the time:

“Amazon is a studio that we have long admired. Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid. We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.”

And since the deal took shape, the pair has been quietly developing several projects, with the first now officially emerging, after being announced as in the works in October.

Amazon has officially ordered a series based on Stephen King’s novel ‘Carrie,’ which has previously been brought to screens a few times.

The most famous adaptation is Brian De Palma’s 1976 movie, which starred Sissy Spacek as the title character. A remake by Kimberly Peirce, starring Chloë Grace Moretz, landed in theaters in 2013.

There was also a 2002 TV movie version handled by David Carson, with Angela Bettis in the lead. Oh, and 1999 saw an attempt to craft a sequel, with ‘The Rage: Carrie 2,’ which didn’t feature the character, but continued the story after her death.

Given his history, we have faith in Flanagan coming up with something much more successful than the more recent efforts. Ready the blood bucket!

‘Carrie’ is Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel. Set in the town of Chamberlain, Maine, the plot follows Carrie White, a friendless high school girl from an abusive religious household who discovers she has telekinetic powers.

According to the official spiel, the show is described as, “bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious powers.”

According to Variety, Summer H. Howell is nearing a deal to star in Flanagan’s series as Carrie.

Howell has form in the horror genre, having starred in the ‘Child’s Play’ franchise films ‘Curse of Chucky’ and ‘Cult of Chucky.’

She has also appeared in genre films such as ‘Hunter Hunter,’ ‘Spirit in the Blood,’ ‘Time Cut,’ and ‘Harland Manor,’ as well as multiple episodes of the scary anthology series ‘Channel Zero.’

On the lighter side of things, she starred in the Disney+ film ‘Clouds,’ which was based on the acclaimed memoir ‘Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom’s Small Prayer in a Big Way’ by Laura Sobiech.

In more confirmed news, Siena Agudong has landed the role of popular high schooler Sue Snell.

In the novel and subsequent film adaptation, Sue initially joins in bullying Carrie but later decides to try to befriend her. Amy Irving played the character in the original film and ‘The Rage: Carrie 2,’ with Kandyse McClure and Gabriella Wilde playing her in subsequent ‘Carrie’ movies.

Agudong most recently starred in the Tubi movie ‘The QB and Me,’ which she also executive produced. She was also the female lead in Kevin Smith’s coming-of-age film ‘The 4:30 Movie.’

With the show now officially announced, team Amazon is naturally happy to talk about it.

Here’s Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios:

Flanagan’s current movie is another King-derived project, ‘The Life of Chuck.’

Starring the likes of Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Matthew Lillard, Karen Gillan, Molly C. Quinn, David Dastmalchian and Chiwetel Ejiofor, it’s described as “a life-affirming, genre-bending story based on Stephen King’s novella about three chapters in the life of an ordinary man named Charles Krantz.”

‘The Life of Chuck’ will be on screens on June 6th.

He’s also in pre-production on a new movie based on classic horror ‘The Exorcist,’ having taken over shepherding that particular franchise for Universal from David Gordon Green.

And beyond that, he wrote the script for DC Studios and Warner Bros.’ ‘Clayface’ movie, which has ‘Speak No Evil’ filmmaker James Watkins in the director’s chair.

When will the ‘Carrie’ TV series be on screens?

Eight episodes of the show have been ordered and production is scheduled for this summer in Vancouver, but there is no official premiere date for ‘Carrie’ just yet.
