Moviefone: To begin with, what was it about the podcast, ‘Firebug’, that made you think this would make an interesting series?

Taron Egerton: Well, I think the podcast ‘Firebug’ that you mentioned, it is such an intriguing, unnerving, and arresting story. It has this kind of central conundrum to it, which is what is going on with this guy? The real guy is called John, although my character in this is called Dave Goodson. He defies figuring out, really, and that, of course, is a hugely interesting and fertile territory to spin a drama out from. I remember when Kary (Antholis), the host of that podcast and the producer of ‘Black Bird’ and this, when he and Dennis first started discussing things, it was amazing to watch Dennis ignite his creativity over it and start spinning it off in different directions and suddenly to create these other characters, some of whom are rooted in real people, but very greatly expanded on. I think in answer to your question, he’s just such a mad, fascinating character. Why would somebody do this?

MF: Finally, what was it like working with Jurnee Smollett and building the relationship between those two characters?

TE: A delight. Acting is always a very cyclical thing, so you give and receive energy. The best actors are the ones that are most alive to each other, I think. Jurnee does an incredible job of playing a character with tremendous weight and trauma, but also staying very available, alive and creative and bringing lightness to that in the moment. We had a time building this bizarre relationship, because it’s very complicated. On the one hand, I think, certainly in the first instance, they are intrigued and charmed by one another, and then it becomes competitive, and then it becomes very charged and adversarial. By the end of the show, it’s strange and bitter and dark. I can’t imagine anyone better or more talented to have done that with. It was great to have such a great, talented partner in Jurnee.

Moviefone: To begin with, Jensen, when you first read the screenplay, what excited you most about being part of this project?

Jensen Ackles: Unlike some other shows that I’m a part of, I read ‘Countdown’ with a true eagerness to know what was happening and an excitement. A youthful zeal, as my friend Eric Dane would say. It’s a thrill ride. It’s a ride that I would want to be on as an audience. I got the fortunate call to be on it personally, and there’s nothing in there that I was like, “I don’t want to that.” There were very little discussions with Derek about like, “Hey, can we change the this?” If anything, it was on the day. There was no ick factor. There was no like, “I don’t think I would do this.” Everything that he wrote was a template, and it was either done with precision or we played with it until we got what we wanted and what we needed, and it was a delight.

MF: Eric, your character is the boss of this unit, did that extend off set as well?

Eric Dane: So, everybody’s somewhat of a self-contained unit, but we’ve all coalesced nicely. There is no leader. There is just a group of people that have come together to endeavor to make the best show they can, and we had a great time.

MF: Finally, Jensen, what was it like collaborating with series creator Derek Haas on this project?

Jensen Ackles: I hate to call him a boss because I view him as a friend, but he is a wonderful tone setter. He literally just gave a group of crazy actors a playground to absolutely play, and he wrote such great in-depth characters, and a twisty storyline. It lent itself to the camaraderie that we all found ourselves in, and I can’t thank him enough. I can’t speak highly enough of that guy. He’s a wonderful person to work with. I hope I get to work with him for many years.

Moviefone: To begin with, Kerry, can you talk about your approach to playing Kate and was this a fun character for you to portray?

Kerry Condon: Yeah, it was of course, because it was a super intelligent character that wasn’t one note. It wasn’t like, “This is the intelligent, nerdy character.” It was like there was lots of different flavors to her that made her more of a real person. I was really encouraged to go with my instinct and bring a lot of my own personality and to have fun too, which was wild to be encouraged to have fun on such a high-pressure job. I was encouraged to enjoy it.

MF: Javier, how did you approach playing your character and can you talk about his relationship with Sonny Hayes?

Javier Bardem: For me, it was more about the relationship, the love relationship of a friendship with Brad’s character and how much they respect each other, need each other, and despise each other when they’re not in the same page. It was about creating that relationship and bringing it to the screen, for us to understand that at the end of the day, you really must sacrifice yourself to make the team win. All the personal things must be forgotten to make it more about the team.

MF: Damson, I understand you did your own driving in this film, what was that experience like and how did that help your performance?

Damson Idris: That was the first thing I asked when I first met with Joe (Kosinski) and Jerry (Bruckheimer), I said, “When you guys did ‘Top Gun’, the actors were in the planes for real, right?” They’re like, “Yeah.” “Are we going to be driving the cars for real?” “Yeah.” I was like, “Oh,” and I put on my poker face. I was like, “I could do that easy,” but growing up I always loved fast cars, so getting in the cars and going through these corners, I knew it was going to be just the most fun. We trained for four months every single day so we could look real on screen. Yeah, it was the best experience. Going from track to track, I don’t think anyone’s ever going to be able to experience what I have. No actor, anyway.

MF: Finally, Javier, when you shot the racing scenes, they were at real races in front of real Formula One fans. What was that experience like for you performing in front of all those people?

JB: I remember Silverstone, it was the first day of shooting for me, and Joe and Brad were with the drivers and the planes flying overhead and then the camera will follow them through the whole crowd. We have a conversation, Brad and I in front of thousands of people. That’s a different kind of energy, like a theater play, but seen by thousands of people at the same time. That puts you in a place of really a lot of adrenaline.

Moviefone: To begin with, what was your first reaction to reading the screenplay and why did you want to be part of this project?

Yonas Kibreab: Okay, so when I first got the full script, what tied me to this character of Elio was that he can relate to me in a lot of ways. I feel like he’s such a quirky kid. He doesn’t care about what people think, and he’s not afraid to be himself. I think that’s something that I must really channel, just like Elio. He’s taught me to always be myself, the best self I can be. When reading the script, the writers at Pixar did such an amazing job describing everything, although I couldn’t see the animation yet, I could picture everything in my mind. It turned out exactly what I imagined and more.

MF: What was your first reaction to the animation and the way your character would look on screen?

YK: I saw storyboards of it. He didn’t look the same. But he had a little bit longer hair. But other than that, he looked similar. I think when I saw the first animated footage was at D23 in 2023, when they first announced the movie. I think that was the first time I’ve seen him. It’s just so crazy to see somebody who you’re playing, especially in an original Pixar movie because I’ve watched Pixar movies since I was little, and I still do today.

MF: What was your experience like working with Pixar?

YK: It was great. When I got to go to the Pixar studio up in Emeryville, California, it was the most magical campus I’ve ever been to. I want to work there, and just being able to be in that same studio where Jamie Foxx and Tom Hanks were recording all these famous Pixar movies, was so surreal to me. Meeting all the very talented artists at Pixar, it was just so great to meet them.

MF: Did you work with any of the other actors, or did you record your dialogue alone?

YK: Yes, usually I am by myself, but I’ve been lucky enough to record with Remy Edgerly who plays Glordon. He’s such an amazing kid and it’s been great because usually, I worked on stuff with adults. Being able to also work on a voiceover animated movie where you don’t record with anybody, but to record for the first time with a kid, is so refreshing. It was so great to work with him and I’ve got to know him off-screen as well. We did press stuff in Disney World, and we got to go on rides together. It’s so cool. I feel like we should always experience that. That’s the one thing I wish I could change about the way movies are recorded, especially animated ones. Because I don’t know how they did it back then, but now, usually you’re recording by yourself, and I feel like it’s so important to play off the people you’re working with.

MF: Is there a particular scene in the film that you were excited to see on the big screen for the first time?

YK: Yes. I think I’m going to have to say the scene where Elio and Glordon are crawling in the lava tunnel. Glordon’s like, “Just get in my mouth.” And I’m like, “No, I don’t want to do that. I’m not fireproof.” That’s probably one of my favorite scenes also to record.

MF: Finally, can you talk about the movie’s message and what do you hope young audiences take away from seeing the film?

YK: I hope the first thing that they take away is just how amazing this movie is, but also just how important your friends and your family are. Friendship is very important, just like Elio and Glordon, and your friends are always going to be there for you, including your family members. Also, if you’re feeling alone, if you’re feeling like it’s hard to find friends and you’re going through grief, it’s all going to be okay, and you will find your people. Just stay positive.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about how this project came together and your roles as an actor, co-writer and producer on the film?

Scott Adkins: I was working on ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ with Marko Zaror. We spent a lot of time together because we’re good friends anyway and we started talking about a potential movie that we could star in together. We came up with this idea and then we got Ernesto (Díaz Espinoza) involved, who’s the director, and he does a lot of films with Marko in Chile. So, the three of us came up with a story and then we brought in Matt Samson and developed the story some more and got him to write it. My manager, Craig Baumgarten, also produces movies. So, we took it to him. He took it to some people like Clay Epstein, and we found a place to shoot it in Colombia because we wanted it to be in South America. Originally, we were thinking Chile. So, we ended up in Colombia shooting it with a great production team. We got a lot of support and had a fantastic stunt team behind us that really wanted to work with me and Marko because they’re not used to doing as much fight-based stuff. But we got some great stunts in there like car hits and high falls and all the rest of it. They were fantastic. We ended up with an amazing actress, Alana (De La Rossa), who’s Colombian, and she’s the heart of the movie. It’s a great cast. We didn’t have a lot of time to shoot it, but we’re very happy with the result.

MF: Is being a producer on projects you appear in something you want to pursue moving forward?

SA: Honestly, it’s a massive headache that I could do without. I’m a creative producer. I like to create my projects. But when it comes to dealing with the banks, the finance and the day in day out of dealing with all of that … Ignorance is bliss. I’d rather not know what’s going on behind the scenes because sometimes it’s stressful. So really, I’m a creative producer. But it’s nice to be in a position where if there is a problem and something needs to be addressed, I can pull the producer card out and go, “Hang on a second.”

Scott Adkins as “Kris Chaney” in the action film ‘DIablo’, a Lionsgate release. Photo courtesy of Lionsgate.

MF: How would you describe your character Kris Chaney, and did he change from development to production?

SA: Well, honestly, as simple as it sounds, me and Marko were just riffing on an idea of ‘No Country for Old Men’ and how we could do our version, where I’m like Josh Brolin and he’s Javier Bardem. You can see that now. You see the movie and you’d understand where I’m coming from. We just wanted a chase movie where I’m pursuing him, he’s pursuing me, and what is it? Is it a bag of money? We ended up coming up with the idea for it to be the girl, and everything came from there. As far as my character goes, he is a bit of a blank page, and you learn about my character through the eyes of Elisa. The audience learns about me the way that the story goes, as she does. So, the film’s very much from her perspective. That’s where we went with it. I think the film’s got a lot of heart and really, we were very lucky to get Alana to play the part. Without her being such an amazing actress, it would not be what it is.

MF: Did you have time to rehearse with actress Alana De La Rossa or did you have to dive right in due to a short production schedule?

SA: Well, this is it. She doesn’t know me, so we didn’t need a bond. But we did get some rehearsal time and she quickly proved that she was the best actor in the room. So, I was like, “Okay. Just do that.” But there’s not a lot of backstories because to do that, the way the story is, it would be too expositional. We just got to talk about it and it’s just a lot of talking. It’s more about who these characters are and how they relate to one another on the journey that they’re on. We discussed having some flashbacks to flesh out the backstory, but we just felt it didn’t need it. These characters, that’s who they are. This is the situation they’re in, and this is the journey they’re going on.

MF: Does having a compressed shooting schedule give you a feeling of urgency on the set, and does that translate onto the screen in the action sequences?

SA: You can’t second-guess yourself. If you decide something, you’ve got to go with it because there’s no time to do anything different. You’ve got to hopefully turn up with a tight script that’s ready to shoot if you start making a lot of changes. You always do, but you don’t want to make too many. As far as the action goes, it must be structured. There’s no room for rehearsal, there’s no room for improvisation. Marko designed the action, and it’s pre-vised in a gym. It’s pre-vised in a gym when we’ve got time and we’re not spending as much money to do it. Then we get to the location and then time is money. So, you’ve just got to shoot those pieces, and you want to stick to the structure of what that is, really.

MF: Can you talk about coordinating and shooting the action sequences with Marko Zaror?

SA: We wanted it to be gritty and realistic, to a degree. We want to put a bit of flash in there sometimes, but we didn’t want people flying around on wires or doing somersaults because it would take away from the tone of the movie. It’s important to know what the tone of the film is and stick to it with the action. So, the camera work fits in with that. It’s got a high shutter frame rate and gives it that gritty ‘Saving Private Ryan’ feel. It’s important to us to just let the camera show the action and not just turn into an edited mess. We’re quite good at that. We know what we’re doing. The one thing we don’t have and that we need is time, especially with the action sequences, because it just takes time to get the various angles. You can always do better, but it’s knowing on a budget like this, that, “Okay, that’s the best we’re going to get. Can we live with it? Okay, let’s move on.” Because we want quality action, but we also want a lot of it. When you’ve only got 22 days to shoot the movie, you can’t have everything the way you want it. But me and Marko are obviously very used to doing that sort of stuff.

MF: Can you talk about how action sequences and fight scenes have changed since the ‘John Wick’ series, and having worked on that franchise yourself, do you feel pressure to enhance the action and fight scenes that you are involved with?

SA: Yeah, it’s got better and better. Hollywood’s got better at making actors without martial arts experience look like they have martial arts experience. So, you can’t get away with just being a badass and not really being able to act anymore because that can make Brad Pitt look like a badass these days. Fight-wise, it’s hard not to copy people. When somebody comes along like Gareth Evans and creates a new style, you want to lean into that, ‘John Wick’ comes along with that style, and you want to lean in. It is hard to reinvent the wheel, but sometimes guys do it. Then when it does happen, it’s hard not to copy them because anything less looks dated. I’m really impressed when people find a new style, which I can’t say that I’ve come across yet. It’d be interesting to see what the new style is, whatever that will be.

MF: As someone who works closely with the stunt team, how do you feel about the recent news that the Academy Awards are introducing a stunt category in the future?

SA: It’s about damn time. These guys put their lives on the line. Obviously, they try to be as safe as possible. But nobody ever died sewing a costume as far as I’m aware. So, I think it’s high time that it happened. I’ll be interested to see how they structure it, because there’s so many different facets of stunt work. I think maybe that’s why it hasn’t happened for a bit. But yeah, I’m looking forward to it and these guys, they deserve it.

MF: Finally, you also have ‘The RIP’ coming out next year with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. What was it like working with them and making that movie?

SA: Wow, what a thrill. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, incredible actors. Extremely smart guys. I played Ben’s brother in the movie. Joe Carnahan‘s the director. He wrote an incredible script. I don’t want to say too much about it, but it’s just a thrill to be working with the caliber of talent that I was able to work with. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Premiering on Apple TV+ beginning May 16th is the new sci-fi series ‘Murderbot’, which is based on book series ‘The Murderbot Diaries’ and was written, directed and produced by Chris Weitz (‘American Pie’) and Paul Weitz (‘About a Boy’).

The new series stars Alexander Skarsgård (‘The Northman’) as the title character, as well as David Dastmalchian (‘The Suicide Squad’), Noma Dumezweni (‘The Friend’), Sabrina Wu (‘Joy Ride’), Tattiawna Jones (‘RoboCop’), Akshay Khanna (‘Polite Society’), and Tamara Podemski (‘Fancy Dance’).

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with series creators Chris and Paul Weitz about their work on ‘Murderbot’, their love for the books it is based on, adapting the source material, and the thrill of seeing the cast on set for the first time.

Moviefone: To begin with, Chris, when did you first become aware of the books that the series is based on?

Chris Weitz: Well, Paul sent me ‘Murderbot’, because he had read it and loved it. I mean, he was just reading it for fun and I loved it just as much. So, my first exposure was like a lot of fans of ‘Murderbot’ was just from having the book placed in my hands. Then there was a great audible read, which made it even better. So, it was this kind of great comfort read for me.

MF: Paul, can you talk about your love for the source material and the challenges of adapting the books for a series?

Paul Weitz: Well, there’s no real reason to adapt something. I mean, it’s not like a piece of literature that you love must be adapted. In fact, it’s usually the opposite. In this case, the sort of reassuring thing was that we had access to Martha Wells who wrote the book, and so we didn’t want to take anything out of the book. We weren’t cutting anything. We wanted to add some stuff because it’s 10 episodes. We wanted to think about, the character’s acting this way in the book, what is their backstory? How else might they act when we’re not seeing them in the book? Then also some sort of incident. But we were able to call Martha and say, “Hey, we have this thought or this idea, what do you think?” Then she would either be into it or say, “Well, would you think about something else?” I mean, she was polite, but we wanted her input throughout. So that part was fun and then working with Chris on it was really fun.

MF: Finally, Chris, as a director, what is it like for you the first time you have the entire cast together on set in costume and you begin filming?

CW: It’s exciting. I mean, one reason is that we had quite a lot of freedom because Martha doesn’t over describe the visual texture of this world. She was also very open to improvisation. Sue Chan, our production designer, and Sean Faden, our visual effects supervisor, are both incredibly talented and experienced professionals. We had the resources to make the greatest piece of fan fiction that we could. Our interest was in making a world that didn’t trade upon tropes that have already been done before, which have been done well. But to make something new and something that feels visually like a fun place to be, as well as something that feels true to the books.

The live-action DisneySnow White’ might not exactly have worked at the box office, and saw itself mired in controversy, but star Rachel Zegler has her eyes set on her next project.

According to Variety, she’s now attached to star alongside Marisa Tomei in a new comedy drama called ‘She Gets It From Me,’ which will chart a complicated mother-daughter relationship. Yes, she’s going from having a wicked stepmother to a former punk rocker of a birth mother.

In the director’s chair for the new movie is Julia Heinz, whose resume also includes 2024’s ‘Treasure’ and 2020’s ‘And Tomorrow the Entire World,’ which was Germany’s Oscar submission for that year.

‘She Gets It From Me’ is based on a true story, and follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother, Charlotte (Tomei). Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect.

According to the official synopsis: “YouTube is packed with tearful family reunions, but nobody films the messy aftermath.”

3311 Productions (which previously backed the likes of ‘The Assistant,’ and ‘Brigsby Bear’) produces in partnership with Anna Werner for Seven Elephants ( who worked with Heinz on ‘And Tomorrow the Entire World,’) and Jay Reiss (writer of stage play ‘The Twenty Fifth Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,’) who also crafted the script.

Here’s what Heinz told Variety about the screenplay:

“The emotional truth of the movie, reflecting parts of all our lives, is truly funny, immersive cinema. Jay’s screenplay captures family dynamics at their most authentic: absurd yet profound, messy yet meaningful. The collision of two worlds creates comedy that cuts deep because it’s so honest.”

‘She Gets It From Me’ will mark her next movie.

This is producer Jen Dana on what Zegler brings to the film:

“Rachel always brings a brilliant depth and humanity to her roles, and we are so excited for her to continue to showcase her versatility and humor as an actress.”

More recently, she played Aunt May to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the latest trilogy of ‘Spider-Man’ movies and in 2024 alone, she appeared in three movie, ‘Upgraded,’ ‘High Tide’ and ‘Brothers.’

Upcoming for the actor are the likes of ‘F*ck Valentine’s Day’ and ‘You’re Dating a Narcissist.’ She’s also attached to action thriller ‘The Mongoose.’

Here’s what Embankment boss Hugo Grumbar said about Tomei’s casting:

“What could be more fun than finding out your birth mother is the wonderful Marisa Tomei!”

When will ‘She Gets It From Me’ hit theaters?

The rights to the new movie will be on sale at this year’s Cannes market via Embankment Films, while CAA will make its domestic deal.

But with not distributor attached yet, we’ll have to wait and see when it is released into theaters.

Movies set around the world of athletes, particularly those competing in the heady high levels of the Olympics, have always been a reliable audience-grabber, and the genre has been wide enough to encompass a whole range of categories, including the rom-com likes of ‘The Cutting Edge,’ the full-on comedy of ‘Blades of Glory’ and the noble true-story examples such as ‘Miracle’ and the more recent ‘The Boys in the Boat.’

Paramount is clearly hoping to take advantage of this sort of movie, and is getting back in business with one of its reliable performers.

Miles Teller, who appeared in the company’s mammoth movie hit ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and led its small-screen Paramount+ streaming hit ‘The Offer,’ is now aboard to produce and star in a new sports-themed movie called ‘Winter Games.’

The new film, per Deadline, comes courtesy of director Paul Downs Colaizzo, who co-wrote the script and will call the shots.

The movie is set in the high-stakes arena of the Winter Olympic Games, following a perpetually overlooked skier and a self-sabotaging hockey legend who collide at their breaking points. Their unexpected connection threatens her chance for a medal and his shot at a comeback as they navigate romance and redemption in the Olympic Village.

We don’t yet know who will star alongside Teller.

Colaizzo co-wrote the script with Pat Cunnane, who recently worked on the script for ‘Eternity,’ a new drama starring and produced by Teller (more on that below).

And it’s also a reunion for the actor and producers Tim and Trevor White, whose Star Thrower company helped shepherd ‘Eternity’ and will do the same for ‘Winter Games.’

What else is Miles Teller attached to?

Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw in 'Top Gun: Maverick' from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.
Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

Teller, whose past resume also includes the likes of ‘Whiplash,’ the 2011 version of ‘Footloose,’ ‘Spiderhead’ ‘Rabbit Hole,’ the less-than-loved 2015 take on ‘Fantastic Four’ and, most recently, Apple TV+ horror action thriller ‘The Gorge,’ is a busy, in-demand actor.

As mentioned above, he has ‘Eternity’ on the way, a new A24 movie directed by David Freyne that also stars Callum Turner, Elizabeth Olsen and Da’Vine Joy Randolph.

It’s the story of how, after death, everybody gets one week to choose where to spend eternity. But for main characters Joan, Larry, and Luke, it’s really a question of who to spend it with.

While the movie doesn’t have a set release date in place yet, it’s already drawing potential awards buzz.

Then there is ‘Michael,’ the musical biopic of superstar Michael Jackson, in which Teller plays John Branca, Jackson’s manager, lawyer and close friend. The movie currently has an October release window from Lionsgate, though there has been chatter about legal issues surrounding the depiction of one of his accusers in a sexual abuse case, and the potential for the movie to be split in two so as to cover the full breadth of Jackson’s story.

Outside of those, there is animated tale ‘The Ark and the Aardvark,’ in which Teller voices Gilbert, the titular creature, who is given the task of shepherding the animals on to Noah’s Ark.

The actor is also attached to the long-developing third outing for the ‘Top Gun’ franchise, where he would reprise the role of Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, AKA the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose from the 1986 original.

There are a number of other projects on his To Do list, including crime thriller ‘Wild Game,’ ‘Bartali,’ another sporting tale (where Teller would here play champion cyclist Gino Bartali, who put his career on hold to fight in World War II) and Martin Scorsese’s wishlist project ‘The Life of Jesus,’ which also has Andrew Garfield attached but has still yet to shoot.

Here’s what the legendary director told the L.A. Times about the movie:

“I’m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organized religion. Right now, ‘religion,’ you say that word and everyone is up in arms because it’s failed in so many ways. But that doesn’t mean necessarily that the initial impulse was wrong. Let’s get back. Let’s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life — even in rejecting it. Don’t dismiss it offhand. That’s all I’m talking about.”

When will ‘Winter Games’ be on screens?

Paramount has yet to give the movie a release date. But assuming it films this year (and given Teller’s busy schedule, there’s no certainty of that), it could be out next year.

  • Movie Review: ‘Another Simple Favor’

‘Another Simple Favor’ receives 7 out of 10 stars.

Arriving globally on Prime Video on May 1st, ‘Another Simple Favor’ throws us back into the knotty dynamic of mommy vlogger-turned-crime sleuth Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) and mysterious, murderous fashion plate Emily Nelson (Blake Lively).

This sequel to the 2018 murder mystery brought to screens by director Paul Feig, looks to amp up the mystery even further, throwing in new family members and some luxurious Italian island locations.

On television, there’s a common trick of sitcoms and other shows usually anchored to one place to goose things up by taking the characters on holiday. ‘The Brady Bunch’ went to Hawaii. ‘Friends’ brought us “The One in Barbados” and the usually hospital-bound ‘Scrubs’ splashed out for a destination wedding in the Bahamas.

‘Another Simple Favor’ tries a similar trick, albeit in movie form (though it is premiering on Prime Video), moving its murder mystery machinations to the picturesque isle of Capri in Italy. But is it enough to elevate everything? That’s a more complicated question, one whose answer is both yes and no.

    Script and Direction

Paul Feig attends the Amazon MGM Studios 'Another Simple Favor' New York Special Screening on Sunday, April 27, 2025 at Jazz at Lincoln Center, New York City. Photo: Prime Video.

The sequel boasts the writing talents of Jessica Sharzer (who adapted ‘A Simple Favor’ from the novel by Darcey Bell and has written the likes of ‘Nerve,’ and episodes of ‘American Horror Story’) with Laeta Kalogridis –– more known for the dramatic ‘Shutter Island’ and ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ –– taking a pass.

Together, they have concocted something that feels as though it has a similar energy to the original movie, while looking to heighten things to an even more absurd degree. Which is saying something, given that the 2018 effort had more turns than a corkscrew.

‘A Simple Favor’ effectively blended its mystery and comedy tones together, and while the follow-up attempts the same trick with some new complications, it mostly manages it, while sometimes tipping too far into ridiculousness.

Still, there are the requisite laughs to be found here, and enough twists to keep you guessing. Once the new main mystery is revealed, it does rather start to deflate, and there is some egregious sequel baiting towards the end.

Feig, returning as director, proves he can adeptly hop between genres, and being let loose in the beautiful island of Capri certainly allows him to up the visual interest of the movie. He also capably manages the new cast recruits while keeping the focus squarely where it should be: the winning, sometimes overly catty dynamic between Kendrick’s Stephanie and Lively’s Emily.

    Cast and Performances

Lively might be the superstar here, but it’s Anna Kendrick who really keeps the movie grounded and funny. As Stephanie, who is awkwardly trying to enjoy her newfound fame following the events of the original film (and capitalize on them by writing a book about the case), Kendrick remains the comic powerhouse of the film, whether she’s effectively narrating the movie through her video channel or trading barbs with Lively’s Emily (or, er, Hope, as she should really be called.)

As for Lively, she’s back in full-on comic-inflected femme fatale mode, as she struts around in outrageous clothing and gets passive-aggressive with Kendrick’s character. She once more makes an impact, whether she’s plotting her next move or proving more of a friend to Stephanie than she might have suspected.

There’s also a healthy vein of vulnerability in both the leads, which makes the characters as relatable in the past, even as the screwball murder mystery is dialed up into ever more frenzied levels of complexity.

Around them, a collection of returning and new performers add extra layers to the story.

Henry Golding is able to let loose more as Sean, Emily’s ex-husband (who had a dalliance with Stephanie in the original), and here is a drunken, sarcastic mess, throwing endless shade at his ex.

Of the newcomers, the highlights are Alex Newell, who steals moments and scenes as Stephanie’s enthusiastic assistant/book tour manager Vicky and Elena Sofia Ricci as Portia Versano, the powerful, calculating mother of Emily’s new fiancé Dante (Michele Morrone), neither of whom show up on google searches, but are clearly very rich and powerful –– it won’t take you long to guess why.

Less present, but still entertaining are Detective Summervile (Bashir Salahuddin, returning from the original) and FBI agent Irene Walker (Taylor Ortega), who help drive the plot while not forgetting to bring the laughs.

The really nutritious additions to the cast are Allison Janney and Elizabeth Perkins, who consume whole sections of scenery playing Emily’s grasping aunt and drunken mother.

    Final Thoughts

‘A Simple Favor’ sometimes coasted on the power of its stars and some fun plot turns, and ‘Another Simple Favor’ falls into a similar trap.

Still, the idyllic countryside helps it feel different enough, and though it can’t quite keep the momentum up towards the end, watching it is not too much of an ask.

Wilde is both calling the shots for, and appearing in, new comedy ‘The Invite’ and she’s gathered quite the starry cast to lead it.

According to the official synopsis, Wilde’s latest directorial effort is about a couple who invites the neighbors over, igniting an evening full of unexpected twists and turns, revealing deeply repressed emotions and unexplored sexuality.

The story has its origins in 2020 Spanish film ‘Sentimental’ (AKA ‘The People Upstairs’), which was written and directed by Cesc Gay.

It has been adapted a variety of times before, including into 2022’s Italian version ‘Vicini di casa,’ 2023’s Swiss effort ‘The Neighbors from Upstairs,’ 2024 French remake ‘Maybe More’ and that same year, a Czech movie called ‘V dobrém i zlém.’

This latest script comes courtesy of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who have collaborated on the likes of ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’ and contributed story material to ‘Toy Story 4.’

In addition to this latest project, Wilde also has other directorial gigs in development, including Universal Pictures’ Christmas comedy ‘Naughty’ and Warner Bros.’ ‘Avengelyne,’ a film adaptation of the ’90s comic book character, both of which boast the support of Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company.

There’s also a new, untitled comedy project she’s been writing with ‘Booksmart’ collaborator Katie Silbermab.

As an actor, she’ll next be seen in Gregg Araki’s comedy ‘I Want Your Sex’ opposite Cooper Hoffman and Charli XCX.

(L to R) Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen in ‘The Studio,’ premiering March 26, 2025 on Apple TV+.

Rogen is enjoying success with his Apple TV+ Hollywood satire ‘The Studio,’ which he co-created, co-directs and stars in as a newly crowned studio head wrangling with the division between art and business in his job.

The show features an appearance by Wilde, playing a version of herself.

He was recently heard reprising the voice of Pumbaa in ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ and has the role of autocratic porcine in Andy Serkis’ animated ‘Animal Farm.’

Beyond that is Aziz Ansari’s ‘Good Fortune,’ new drama ‘The Wrong Girls,’ and a wealth of projects in development.

Where else can we see Penélope Cruz?

Cruz was last seen in Michael Mann’s motoring biopic ‘Ferrari, and has ‘Johnny’s Inferno’ in the works.

She’ll be seen in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Frankenstein take ‘The Bride,’ and is starring with Johnny Depp in ‘Day Drinker.’

What else has Edward Norton appeared in?

Norton was Oscar nominated for his role as Pete Seeger in Bob Dylan movie ‘A Complete Unknown’ and is lending his voice as narrator for new documentary ‘Fasting and the Longevity Revolution.’

And, as with many of his colleagues, there are a number of projects in development.

When will ‘The Invite’ accept an invitation to appear in theaters?

At this stage, the movie has yet to lock down a distributor, so we’re guessing a deal is forthcoming or the rights will be available at an upcoming film market.

Given the name cast, we doubt it’ll take too long for it to be snapped up.
