‘Conjuring 3’ Director’s ‘The Curse of La Llorona’ Just Got the Creepiest Trailer and Poster

    Warner Bros.

If you thought The Nun was bad, wait til you meet La Llorona.

It was just recently revealed that Michael Chaves would be directing “The Conjuring 3,” picking up from director James Wan. Wan is still on board as producer, but he felt confident in passing the reins to Chaves based on their experience working together on “The Curse of La Llorona.” (Tip: Don’t say that title in your head to the “My Sharona” song or it will never leave you.)

Chaves directed and Wan produced “La Llorona” — which was formerly called “The Children.”

The story follows social worker Anna Garcia in 1973 Los Angeles. Anna investigates one of her cases and finds foul play at the hands of a supernatural force, which she finds has similarities to the force terrorizing her family. She looks for help from a local faith healer when the entity, La Llorona, attaches itself to her and will stop at nothing to take her children.

The film stars Linda CardelliniPatricia VelasquezSean Patrick ThomasRaymond CruzJaynee-Lynne Kinchen, Roman Christou, Madeleine McGraw, and John Marshall Jones.

    Here’s the super-tense teaser trailer:

The official poster for the film was released before the first trailer:

And here’s a very long description for more intel:

La Llorona. The Weeping Woman. A horrifying apparition, caught between Heaven and Hell, trapped in a terrible fate sealed by her own hand. The mere mention of her name has struck terror around the world for generations.

In life, she drowned her children in a jealous rage, throwing herself in the churning river after them as she wept in pain.

Now her tears are eternal. They are lethal, and those who hear her death call in the night are doomed. La Llorona creeps in the shadows and preys on the children, desperate to replace her own. As the centuries have passed, her desire has grown more voracious … and her methods more terrifying.

In 1970s Los Angeles, La Llorona is stalking the night—and the children.

Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment, a social worker and her own small kids are soon drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope to survive La Llorona’s deadly wrath may be a disillusioned priest and the mysticism he practices to keep evil at bay, on the fringes where fear and faith collide.

Beware of her chilling wail…she will stop at nothing to lure you into the gloom.

Because there is no peace for her anguish. There is no mercy for her soul.

And there is no escape from the curse of La Llorona.

On April 19, 2019, this timeless Mexican legend comes to terrifying life in New Line Cinema’s “The Curse of La Llorona.”

The film is produced by Emile Gladstone, Gary Dauberman (“IT” and “Annabelle” franchises) and James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe). Michael Chaves, who won Shriekfest’s Best Super Short Film in 2016 for “The Maiden,” makes his feature directorial debut.

The film stars Linda Cardellini (Netflix’s “Bloodline,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,”); Raymond Cruz (TV’s “Major Crimes”); Patricia Velasquez (TV’s “The L Word,” “The Mummy” films); and Marisol Ramirez (TV’s “NCIS: Los Angeles”). The cast also includes Sean Patrick Thomas (the “Barbershop” films, “Halloween: Resurrection”), Jaynee-Lynne Kinchen (“Selfless”) and newcomer Roman Christou.

Chaves directs from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry & Tobias Iaconis. The behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Michael Burgess, production designer Melanie Jones, editor Peter Gvozdas and costume designer Megan Spatz. The music is by Joseph Bishara (the “Annabelle” and “Conjuring” films).

“The Curse of La Llorona” opens in theaters on April 19, 2019.

  • Evan Rachel Wood Would Love a ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel Following Her Character

Evan Rachel Wood Would Love a ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel Following Her Character

    Practical Magic
    Warner Bros.

    Yes. A thousand times YES.

Practical Magic” — starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as the wonderfully witchy Owens sisters — just celebrated its 20th anniversary on October 16.

Evan Rachel Wood was only about 11-years-old when she played Sally’s (Bullock) daughter Kylie Owens, who looked and acted a lot more like her Aunt Gillian (Kidman).

“Westworld” star Evan, now 31, retweeted an anniversary post…

… then responded to a fan’s idea for a sequel following her character today:

    https://twitter.com/evanrachelwood/status/1052392805090254848

    https://twitter.com/ldybug5012/status/1052445153066127361

    https://twitter.com/Dean_the_human/status/1052394417561030656

No doubt. The fan who suggested the idea is actually Netflix’s social media manager, so if Netflix gets behind this, we could at least potentially add it to their list of 10 gazillion titles. Or maybe it could still get a wide theatrical release.

All of this is theoretical rather than practical magic, of course, since there is no sequel plan to speak of. Not yet.

But come on. If Evan Rachel Wood is down for it, and fans are into the idea, why not? It’s not a reboot. It’s not even one of those “continuations” set in the same universe. It’s a straight-up sequel picking up the story 20 years later. Please?

  • ‘NYPD Blue’ Sequel Coming to ABC, Following Theo Sipowicz

‘NYPD Blue’ Sequel Coming to ABC, Following Theo Sipowicz

NYPD Blue, David Caruso, Dennis Franz
    ABC

Oh my God, they killed Andy Sipowicz. You bastards!

“NYPD Blue” was ABC’s longest running primetime drama until “Grey’s Anatomy” topped it in 2016. Through all 12 years (1993-2005), Dennis Franz was the heart of the show as Andy Sipowicz.

Now ABC is bringing back “NYPD Blue” — or at least giving it a sequel/spinoff — following Andy’s son Theo.

Theo was born near the end of Season 3, the child of Andy and his love interest Sylvia (Sharon Lawrence). Sylvia was killed at the end of Season 6, and her final words to Andy were “Take care of the baby.”

Apparently this new series is killing off Andy, to focus on young Theo. Also because they probably couldn’t get Dennis Franz back.

    Here’s the scoop from Deadline:

“Unfortunately for all Andy Sipowitz fans, in the sequel his character is dead. The return of NYPD Blue follows his son, Theo, as he tries to earn his detective shield and work in the 15th squad while investigating his father’s murder. Theo seems to have taken after his father as he too is a hard-drinking, hard-headed and quick-witted cop.”

Wow. ABC handed out a pilot-production commitment to the sequel, with Matt Olmstead and Nick Wootton writing the script. They both worked on the original show, and will executive produce along with Steven Bochco’s son and wife.

Original “NYPD Blue” co-creator Steven Bochco died back in April. Hopefully this sequel — or spinoff, why are they calling it a “sequel”? — is in keeping with what Bochco wanted to happen.

  • Why Rupert Grint Almost Quit ‘Harry Potter’ After Fourth Movie

Why Rupert Grint Almost Quit ‘Harry Potter’ After Fourth Movie

    Harry Potter
    Warner Bros.

Rupert Grint is 30 years old. It’s hard to imagine it, since we’ve known him as Ron Weasley in the “Harry Potter” film series since he was cast at age 11.

Grint was part of the main cast for eight “Harry Potter” films. Now he’s co-starring in the Sony Crackle series “Snatch,” and talking to the Independent about his formative years.

Apparently he used the word “weird” more than a dozen times when talking about his Harry Potter experience.

He told the Independent he almost quit the series after filming the fourth film, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.”

“I had just finished my GCSEs [General Certificate of Secondary Education exams]. I thought ‘Do I actually want to keep doing this? It’s a bit of a drag.’ Because obviously it’s a big sacrifice. You take for granted anonymity — just doing normal stuff, just going out. Everything was different and a little bit scary. There were times when I was like ‘I’m done.’”

    Ron Weasley gif, Harry Potter
    Warner Bros.

Damn. Why is Ron always the quitter?

You could argue Grint was lucky to get the high profile role — which came with the kind of fortune that magically vanishes any of the usual Muggle money problems. But everything in life is a trade-off, and the loss of anonymity that came with fame was a big issue for him. Not just from paparazzi and tabloids looking for dirt, but also from fans constantly whispering, taking photos, or approaching him because he’s Ron.

“It’s almost like having a split personality. Sometimes it can be quite dehumanizing to have people just taking pictures of you when you’re out. To them, you are just this one thing. It’s a weird existence. But that’s my life. I can’t really remember life before it. In a weird way, you become blasé about it. It becomes normal and you adapt.”

Of course, Grint did finish filming the series and he even went back to watch the play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” watching a new older actor in the role of Ron Weasley.

Independent asked if he’d ever go back to play Ron in an eventual movie version of the stage play.

“Never say never, but, for me, I closed the book on that. It was a huge and amazing part of my life that I feel ended at the right time. We’re all saying this, but we’re ready to move on. The interesting thing is, I saw the play a couple of years ago, and it’s based 30 years on. It was very strange seeing someone else play Ron. A character I really thought I was. We merged into the same person. To see someone else’s portrayal of it, it was like an out-of-body experience. It was very strange. I loved it.”

Read his full interview for more. In addition to “Snatch” — which he also helps executive produce — Grint will soon be seen as Inspector Crome opposite John Malkovich in the BBC’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “The A.B.C. Murders.”

  • Nicole Kidman and Sebastian Stan Go Dark in ‘Destroyer’ Trailer

Nicole Kidman and Sebastian Stan Go Dark in ‘Destroyer’ Trailer

    Nicole Kidman in Destroyer
    Annapurna Pictures

Based on the early praise for Nicole Kidman, we should expect to see her name on awards lists for “Destroyer.”

She already has one Oscar under her belt, and director Karyn Kusama‘s cop thriller may give her another. “Destroyer” premiered to raves for Kidman’s performance (if not the entire film) at the Telluride Film Festival. Now you can see the first trailer before the film arrives in theaters this Christmas.

Here’s what the movie is about:

“‘Destroyer’ follows the moral and existential odyssey of LAPD detective Erin Bell who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results. When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.”

“Destroyer” co-stars Sebastian Stan — prominently featured in the trailer — along with Toby KebbellTatiana MaslanyScoot McNairyBradley WhitfordToby Huss, and James Jordan.

    Here’s the trailer:

Last month, Karyn Kusama (“Girlfight,” “Jennifer’s Body,” “Æon Flux,” “The Invitation“) talked to Vanity Fair about the look they wanted for Nicole Kidman’s character:

“We always knew that what we wanted her to look like was a real middle-aged woman with a past that she wears on her face. With sun damage and sleep deprivation and stress and rage, just in her whole physical body.”

“Destroyer” is scheduled for release in select theaters on December 25. Yeah, it’s kind of a depressing holiday gift, but maybe you’ll be in that kind of mood on Christmas. Let’s face it, sometimes Christmas is exactly this dark and depressing.

Did you ask Santa for some royal rom-coms? Hope so, ’cause that’s what he’s streaming your way.

Netflix is joining the Christmas movie trend Hallmark and Lifetime have been dominating. Entertainment Weekly just shared three new photos promoting three holiday movies coming soon to Netflix:

    • “The Holiday Calendar” with Kat Graham – November 2

    • “The Princess Switch” with Vanessa Hudgens and Sam Palladio – November 16

    • “A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding,” sequel to “A Christmas Prince” – November 30

Here’s more on each film, along with their first look photos.

Vanessa Hudgens previewed this movie with the Instagram photo at top, shared after filming wrapped in June. The rom-com is a modern take on “The Prince and the Pauper,” following a duchess and a commoner who swap places after discovering they look exactly alike. Vanessa Hudgens plays Margaret, the Duchess of Montenaro, who magically swaps places with a commoner named Stacy a week before Christmas. Thanks to Santa’s helper, Margaret falls for Stacy’s co-worker (Sam Palladio), and Stacy finds love with Margaret’s fiancé, who is a prince.

Apparently a lot of people watched “A Christmas Prince,” so hopefully they all return for “The Royal Wedding,” which picks up a year after Amber (Rose McIver) helped Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) take the crown. Now they are preparing for a Christmas wedding — “but everything is thrown into the air when Amber questions whether she’s ready to play queen, and Richard must deal with a ‘political crisis that threatens to tarnish not only the holiday season, but the future of the kingdom.’”

“The Holiday Calendar”The Holiday CalendarNetflix, via EW

“The Vampire Diaries alum Kat Graham plays a photographer who inherits an antique holiday advent calendar that appears to forecast the future. “This Is Us” favorite Ron Cephas Jones co-stars, along with Quincy Brown and Ethan Peck.

You probably already saw Kurt Russell as a cool (and yet also hot?) Santa in the trailer for “The Christmas Chronicles.”

That’s just what Netflix has coming in the next month. TV networks will be listing their own holiday schedules pretty soon, with marathons of your favorite Christmas movies/shows, along with more new originals.

  • ‘The Conners’ Boss Defends Killing Roseanne, as Barr Slams ‘Morbid’ Choice

‘The Conners’ Boss Defends Killing Roseanne, as Barr Slams ‘Morbid’ Choice

THE CONNERS - ABC's "The Conners" stars Maya Lynne Robinson as Geena Williams-Conner, Jayden Rey as Mary, Michael Fishman as D.J. Conner, John Goodman as Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Emma Kenney as Harris Conner, Ames McNamara as Mark, and Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner.
    ABC/Robert Trachtenberg

“The Conners” returned last night — actually, it premiered. It felt like a return, since it was the entire “Roseanne” cast minus Roseanne Barr herself.

You know ABC canceled “Roseanne” after Barr’s racist tweet, then the network decided to revive the show without her creative or financial involvement.

But “The Conners” had to explain where the main character — Roseanne Conner — disappeared to. Last night, it was confirmed that they decided to kill her off. It was revealed that Roseanne Conner had died from an overdose tied to her opioid addiction.

Bruce Helford is the showrunner of “The Conners” and was previously showrunner of “Roseanne.” He penned a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter explaining the decision to kill her off that way.

They debated other ways to explain Roseanne’s absence:

“We knew we had to explain Roseanne’s disappearance from the show definitively but also set up the other characters in a way where they could move on. There was a lot of chatter in the ether about how we should explain Roseanne’s absence: Should she have a sudden heart attack, a mental breakdown or go off into the sunset on a boat with her son Jerry Garcia? But back in the writers room, we firmly decided against anything cowardly or far-fetched, anything that would make the fierce matriarch of the Conners seem pathetic or debased.”

After hearing everyone out, they decided to “make her departure clearly permanent” with a death. (Hey, they killed off Dan Conner at the end of the original run, then made a joke of it in the revival. Death isn’t always that “permanent.”)

    The Conners
    ABC

Helford said they wanted a death that would be “reverent” to this woman who was so beloved by her family, and wouldn’t leave a shadow on the remaining family members:

“It was a crucial story point so that the other characters could truly move on boldly with their lives, evolve and grow. And on a personal note, Roseanne helped launch my career, and while we had our disagreements (she once fired me in Roseanne’s original run), I wanted a respectful sendoff for her, too: one that was relevant and could inspire discussion for the greater good about the American working class, whose authentic problems are often ignored by broadcast television. If you watched the first episode, I hope you’ll agree we did that.”

He said the audience for the live taping of the premiere was tentative to laugh at first, then Laurie Metcalf‘s Aunt Jackie landed a big laugh about casseroles and the crowd relaxed.

    Roseanne
    ABC

Fans who watched the premiere on TV had their own reactions, which they shared at #TheConners (and sometimes #TheConnors even though that’s the wrong spelling).

For her part, Roseanne Barr tweeted this….

    https://twitter.com/therealroseanne/status/1052371163161088001

…. and shared a joint statement with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (via THR):

“While we wish the very best for the cast and production crew of The Conners, all of whom are deeply dedicated to their craft and were Roseanne’s cherished colleagues, we regret that ABC chose to cancel Roseanne by killing off the Roseanne Conner character. That it was done through an opioid overdose lent an unnecessary grim and morbid dimension to an otherwise happy family show.

“This was a choice the network did not have to make. Roseanne was the only show on television that directly addressed the deep divisions threatening the very fabric of our society. Specifically, the show promoted the message that love and respect for one another’s personhood should transcend differences in background and ideological discord. The show brought together characters of different political persuasions and ethnic backgrounds in one, unified family, a rarity in modern American entertainment. Above all else, the show celebrated a strong, matriarchal woman in a leading role, something we need more of in our country.

“Through humor and a universally relatable main character, the show represented a weekly teaching moment for our nation. Yet it is often following an inexcusable – but not unforgivable – mistake that we can discover the most important lesson of all: Forgiveness. After repeated and heartfelt apologies, the network was unwilling to look past a regrettable mistake, thereby denying the twin American values of both repentance and forgiveness. In a hyper-partisan climate, people will sometimes make the mistake of speaking with words that do not truly reflect who they are. However, it is the power of forgiveness that defines our humanity.

“Our society needs to heal on many levels. What better way for healing than a shared moment, once a week, where we could have all enjoyed a compelling storyline featuring a witty character – a woman – who America connected with, not in spite of her flaws, but because of them. The cancellation of Roseanne is an opportunity squandered due in equal parts to fear, hubris, and a refusal to forgive.”

“The Conners” continues Tuesdays on ABC.

OK, but now “Arrow” fans are pushing to see Stephen Amell in a “Supergirl” suit.

That kind of “Freaky Friday” wish was just one reaction to The CW’s intriguing new “Elseworlds” poster teasing this year’s crossover event — where “Destiny Will Be Rewritten.”

You know the Arrowverse shows (or at least a few of them) have themed crossovers every year. This year, “The Flash,” “Arrow,” and “Supergirl” are holding a three-day event from December 9-11.

  • Idris Elba Joins ‘Cats’ Movie in His Second Feline Villain Role

Idris Elba Joins ‘Cats’ Movie in His Second Feline Villain Role

    Idris Elba, Luther
    BBC

One more and it’s officially a trend. Also possibly a concern.

Idris Elba is in final negotiations to join the “Cats” movie, Variety reports.

That film adaptation of the blockbuster musical already stars Jennifer Hudson, James CordenTaylor Swift, and Sir Ian McKellen,

Deadline reports that Elba is playing Macavity.

Who is that, you ask? Here’s a description from Deadline:

“Macavity is the only real villain in the musical, who kidnaps Old Deuteronomy — the Jellicle leader — and attempts to abduct Demeter, one of two cats who sings about him. The character was originally portrayed by Richard Pettyfer in the original West End production, and by Kenneth Ard in the Broadway production. Macavity also has a hypnotic power. In Act II, there are two songs about him: “Macavity: The Mystery Cat’ sung by Demeter, Bombalurina, and female feline back-up; and “Macavity Fight’ performed by Macavity, Demeter, Munkustrap and Alonzo.”

It’s a big role. And, as Variety noted, it will be Elba’s second feline role after voicing Shere Khan in “The Jungle Book” movie. Another villain.

When he’s not meowing maliciously, Elba will next be seen in the “Hobbs and Shaw” movie, and also the upcoming Netflix comedy “Turn Up Charlie.”

“Cats” is said to be in pre-production right now, for a release in theaters on December 20, 2019.

  • Tom Holland Shares Photos and Feels as ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Ends Filming

Tom Holland Shares Photos and Feels as ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Ends Filming

    Columbia Pictures

Mr. Stark, Underoos doesn’t feel so good. He doesn’t want to go.

Can’t blame him. If we had the chance to travel Europe with the cast of “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” we’d want to keep going too.

Tom Holland, Zendaya and company are apparently done filming their second “Spider-Man” movie. According to Holland’s IG, his last day was Tuesday, October 16. The Marvel Cinematic Universe movie has been filming since July. Rumor had it, “Far From Home” would wrap in December, but maybe that’s for the rest of the crew? Or it could just be outdated intel.

“Far From Home” takes Peter Parker and friends to Europe on summer vacation (along with some scenes back in New York), and fans enjoyed following Holland’s international journey. We’ll see the results on screen in July.

Tom Holland seemed to start his final day of filming with swagger, then added a tearful emoji at the halfway point:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpAMJFRF5Z-/

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpAXVDTlIBP/

A few hours later, he shared an Instagram Story video right before his final scene:

“It is here. Final shot of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ It has been a blast. It’s been amazing. The movie’s gonna be awesome. You’re all gonna love it. I’m gonna go smash this shot out. And I just can’t believe we’re finished. Love you all. Thanks for your amazing support.”

Later, he shared a final wrap photo:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BpBMgkAlEEy/

    What an adventure.

We have about nine months to wait for this film baby to be born. In the meantime, check out some of the slightly SPOILERY set photos and videos that have been floating around the Web in the past few days — including more shots of Spider-Man and Michelle/MJ (Zendaya). They clearly had a great time together:

    https://twitter.com/DisneyEntrprses/status/1052315511709728770

    Also…

A lot has changed for Peter Parker since “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” If you saw “Avengers: Infinity War,” you know it didn’t exactly end well for Spider-Man. We’re expecting “Avengers 4” to bridge the information gap between “Infinity War” and “Far From Home.”

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” will be the third MCU film to hit theaters next year, after “Captain Marvel” in March and “Avengers 4” in May (or late April, we’ll see). “Far From Home” opens in theaters July 5th, 2019.
