CinemaCon 2026: Amazon MGM Studios Presentation

After making its first trip to CinemaCon last year, Amazon MGM Studios has certainly been enjoying a good year at the box office so far, largely thanks to the huge success of ‘Project Hail Mary’ (which, as announced at the panel, just crossed $525 million at the global box office, cementing it as the company’s biggest movie to date, and will see its theatrical window extended, Amaze! Amaze! Amaze!).

Hoping to keep the momentum rolling, the studio unveiled new looks at this year’s crop of movies and beyond including ‘The Sheep Detectives’ and ‘Masters of the Universe’. But if you were expecting a surprise announcement about casting for the new James Bond movie, there was none –– but VP of Film Courtenay Valenti did promise it’ll be worthy of the venerable franchise’s legacy.

‘The Thomas Crown Affair’

First out of the gate (even though it isn’t out until next March) was newly minted Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan‘s remake of the 1968 caper movie –– previously re-imagined in 1999, which the actor is directing and starring in.

After a look at some fun footage, Jordan himself took the stage to talk up the fact that Jon Batiste is crafting the music for the movie. He also brought out co-star Adria Arjona, complimenting her “intensity, wit, and fire” while calling her “an incredible scene partner.” Their cat-and-mouse relationship (as art thief and the insurance investigator tracking him down) is at the core of the movie.

Kenneth Branagh, meanwhile, plays the antagonist, the person that Jordan’s Crown targets. Jordan says he made the movie for big screens.

‘Masters of the Universe’

Hoping for another big hit, Amazon MGM is putting a lot of weight behind ‘Masters of the Universe’, which adapts the 1980s toy line and cartoon series (and was already focus of a notoriously unsuccessful 1987 movie).

Stars Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes and director Travis Knight took the stage to introduce a new look at the film. Galitzine, of course, was hefting He-Man’s classic power sword, which is surely some sort of safety violation.

Some fresh footage from the movie –– which Knight and co. described as tackling how someone is challenged to step up beyond what they think they can do –– was screened after Galitzine had the audience lift the fake swords they received as he recited He-Man’s classic transformation line…

The new scene shows Galitzine’s Prince Adam and Mendes’ Teena reuniting on Earth before they travel to Eternia to battle the evil Skeletor (Jared Leto), which in turn leads into the new trailer.

Another jump ahead in time for a quick look at footage from Jason Statham action sequel ‘The Beekeeper 2’. It’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from The Stath, and should keep fans happy. Statham himself appeared via video to exclaim, “some people say less is more. I say more is more.”

The new movie will see the Beekeeper society looking to overthrow the US government. At this point in time, the jokes write themselves…

‘The Sheep Detectives’

Back to 2026’s schedule, and the quirky mystery drama about a herd of sheep who must solve the murder of their beloved shepherd (Hugh Jackman).

Jackman himself arrived on stage (along with co-stars Nicholas Braun, and a returning Galitzine) to tout the film, which also boasts a considerable cast in both live-action (Emma Thompson) and voice (too many to list) form. It’s described as “a warm deeply human story about finding your place in the world.” And we got an extended look at the movie.

Sope Dirisu in the story of Colt, a Vietnam veteran turned contract killer, goes on the run after assassinating a gangland boss.

‘How to Rob a Bank’

With confetti and chaos, the new movie from director David Leitch launched into a first look at a team of social media types who make videos about, well, how to rob banks.

Leitch came on stage with Pete Davidson, and Davidson revealed that this group of robbers livestreams their crimes and robberies. “They’re putting an end to greed and corruption one heist, and one video, at a time,” he said, before Rhenzy Feliz and Anna Sawai were confirmed to be the other two robbers. Leitch wanted to capture the energy of a manic YouTube video, before a video message from the rest of the cast played.

‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother‘

More action, this time a visceral thriller starring Mahershala Ali and following a hitman struggling to balance his job with his faith & fatherhood. Bassam Tariq directs.

Ali took the stage to enthuse about how the movie checked every box for him, and he introduced some intense footage.

The much-anticipated ‘Spaceballs’ sequel was introduced by originator Mel Brooks (via video), with cast members Bill Pullman, Josh Gad, Lewis Pullman, Daphne Zuniga and to great response, Rick Moranis actually present to introduce a first look at the movie, which is as funny as you might hope for. Let’s just say the ‘Star Wars’ sequel trilogy is heavily targeted for spoofing.

‘Highlander’

It might still be busy shooting, but the re-imagining of the 1980s action movie is one of the bigger titles on the horizon for the studio.

With Henry Cavill starring as the immortal warrior who must battle others of his kind, it promises plenty of set pieces.

Cavill and director Chad Stahelski (‘John Wick’) are halfway through filming, but the former took time out to appear via video and offer some early footage.

The chaotic making of the 1976 Sylvester Stallone classic is the subject of this based-on-truth film from director Peter Farrelly.

He strode on stage with some of his cast to talk about the movie, one he described as “for dreamers” before cueing up a first look.

Let’s get some things straight right away: Brendan Fraser is not in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ Tom Cruise is not in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ And, oddly enough, there really isn’t a mummy in ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy.’ Although this movie, produced by James Wan‘s Atomic Monster banner and Blumhouse Films, eschews the action-adventure strains of the Fraser and Cruise variations, its return to the IP’s horror roots is still missing the classic image of a hulking, bandaged corpse slowly shambling after its victims.

In its place is a plot loosely linked to the Egyptian monster of yore, as well as a bunch of scenes and ideas either pulled from or inspired by other horror movies, ranging from the classic ‘The Exorcist’ to the more recent ‘Bring Her Back’ to Cronin’s own ‘Evil Dead Rise.’ But even though the film is nasty, viciously bloody, and wildly bonkers in its third act, a sloppy, strung-together script all but buries ‘The Mummy.’

TV reporter Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor) and his doctor wife Larissa (Lola Costa), along with their young son Sebastian and daughter Katie, are living in Cairo, Egypt, while Charlie is on assignment there. But then Katie vanishes after being lured to the edge of their backyard by a mysterious woman (Hayat Kamille) – a woman glimpsed in the film’s prologue when something stirs in a sarcophagus on her family’s property.

Eight years later, the Cannons have long since returned to the U.S. and live in Albuquerque, where Charlie is a local news producer. Little daughter Maud (Billie Roy) has since been born as well, but no trace of Katie has ever been uncovered. Then the Cannons get a call from Cairo: Katie has been found, alive, wrapped in bandages in that same sarcophagus from the opening, after the plane it’s being transported on crashes.

But as the Cannons soon discover, Katie barely resembles the sweet little girl who disappeared nearly a decade ago. Her skin, nails, and hair desiccated, her body gnarled and contorted, and Katie herself incapable of speech, her survival hardly seems like a miracle. And in fact it’s not: before long, Katie begins behaving in bizarre, dangerous ways, as a malignant presence exerts its influence on the Cannons and threatens to destroy the family.

‘The Mummy’ is one of those movies in which the audience quickly gets so far ahead of the characters that the whole narrative rapidly turns increasingly ludicrous. From the start, it’s clear that something is horribly wrong with Katie; the doctors who let her go home should have their licenses revoked, and she has no business being home so soon. Yet as grotesque as she is, it takes a long time for the Cannons to wake up.

After one particularly brutal outburst of violence, Charlie suggests that it might be time to send Katie elsewhere for round-the-clock professional care. ‘Do you think I’m incapable of caring for my daughter?’ asks Larissa, almost comically unreasonable in light of current events. The whole middle act is a rinse-repeat of Katie doing something violent or gross, with the family simply waiting for the next incident.

Charlie finally investigates the circumstances of Katie’s disappearance with the help of an Egyptian detective (May Calamawy) who was initially on the case in Cairo. Meanwhile, things get progressively worse at the Cannons’ place, leading to a gruesome scene involving coyotes and an in-house wake that turns into a display of vomiting, blood, guts, and the lapping of embalming fluid – and still Katie remains at home.

There is some truly shocking gore in ‘The Mummy,’ and in fact the film is a kissing cousin aesthetically and visually to ‘Evil Dead Rise.’ Cronin is nothing if not mean-spirited when it comes to doling out the onscreen pain, and between that and a few creepy sequences in the house (which, we must note, is at least the third domicile we’ve seen on film this year with full passageways in its walls – what’s with the builders in these movies?), ‘The Mummy’ does have some schlock horror value.

Terrific sound design and a series of unnerving split diopter shots give it an added boost as well. But in the end, ‘The Mummy’ is too sloppily structured as a story for us to care about this family and its fate, and it also turns out – expository lore aside – to not really be a mummy movie at all, but another, all too familiar type of horror movie.

Jack Reynor is serviceable if rather bland as Charlie, the actor capable of either wide-eyed alarm or heavy-lidded shock. His everyman demeanor helps but his character, like the others, is too thinly sketched in to feel real. Reynor and Laia Costa as Larissa have zero chemistry as a married couple, while Verónica Falcón provides some comic relief as the family’s Abuelita.

We did like May Calamawy’s haunted detective, but the best performance is by Natalie Grace as the older Katie. Laden with unsettling prosthetics, making death-rattle sounds in her throat and throwing her body around like a graduate of the Regan MacNeil school for possessed children, Grace is creepily effective and actually hard to look at for long.

Look, there have been loads of mummy movies, and many of the older ones are rather dull quickies in which a stuntman (or Lon Chaney Jr. or Christopher Lee) shuffles around in dirt-caked wrappings and makeup. The more recent attempts channel an Indiana Jones vibe, so it’s nice to see the property done as a proper horror movie again, and credit to Cronin for at least trying to give it a new spin to some degree.

But it’s still not the scary mummy movie we’ve been hoping for, and in fact it’s another kind of horror film entirely once the bandages fall away – which is ironic, because early viewers apparently think it’s going to be a new Brendan Fraser entry. Yet despite its visual flourishes and admittedly effective jolts of blood and guts, ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ doesn’t pay enough attention to its story or characters to make its overlong, two-hour-and-15-minute runtime feel like anything but an eternity.

Universal had a more muted and mixed 2025 than some other studios –– the latest ‘Jurassic World’ outing was a hit, but other titles, including thriller sequel ‘M3GAN 2.0’ stumbled.

Can it regain its mojo? ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s success as certainly helped, and it does at least have some heavy hitters on deck, including Steven Spielberg with sci-fi pic ‘Disclosure Day’ and Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’.

Beyond those two biggies, we can expect the usual blend of family fare (including ‘Minions & Monsters’, the latest extension of the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise) and comedies such as ‘Focker In-Law’.

Before the full presentation kicked off, Snoop Dogg took the stage to confirm that the biopic based on his career will start filming this summer, directed by Craig Brewer and starring Jonathan Daviss.

Here’s what was revealed…

Christopher Nolan’s epic, based on Homer’s story, was somewhat naturally the first big movie featured. Starring half of Hollywood, it promises to be massive in scale and ambitious in scope.

The filmmaker himself took the stage to talk up his latest, joking that he’s glad he doesn’t have to follow Steven Spielberg. ‘The Odyssey’ is not, he says a story. It’s THE story, one he knew he had to shoot entirely in IMAX.

He praised his ensemble, especially Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland, who he called the heart of the film. Oh, and it was a “nightmare to make in the best way possible,” but he’s nearly finished.

More than five minutes of new footage from the movie was shown, including a shipwrecked Odysseus (Damon) washing up on a shore, where he’s greeted by the goddess Calypso, played by Charlize Theron, asking her about his past life which he cannot remember, and a battle from the Trojan war and the iconic Trojan Horse.

‘Minions & Monsters’

Illumination has been a consistent performer for Universal, its animated output boosting studio coffers. So of course the team were present to pimp the next ‘Minions’ movie featuring the little yellow troublemakers.

It’s set in the 1920s and features the Minions trying to find a new master to serve. Pierre Coffin, who co-writes, directs and voices the creatures, told the crowd that he put everything into the new one, before introducing some fresh footage.

‘One Night Only’

The next film to get a brief spotlight was romantic comedy drama ‘One Night Only’, which stars Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro as two New Yorkers searching for love on the one night of the year when sex is legal.

‘Other Mommy’

The initial teaser for the horror movie, starring Jessica Chastain, was shown. It features Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems, confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet. The presence, whom she calls “Other Mommy,” becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family.

‘Violent Night 2’

Next up was a quick look at ‘Violent Night 2’, the sequel to the 2022 action comedy with David Harbour as a grumpy Santa who takes down armed thieves. The 2026 follow-up adds Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus in a story where Santa somehow ends up on the Naughty List.

Getting more of a spotlight was the new ‘Meet the Parents’ outing, which sees Ariana Grande as a young woman looking to marry into Ben Stiller‘s family (and Stiller’s Greg Focker is suspicious of her).

Stiller and Robert De Niro took the stage to introduce a first look, with De Niro commenting that Grande is the funniest scene partner he’s ever had. Ouch!

‘Sense and Sensibility‘

Focus Features was next up, with a quick look at the latest Jane Austen adaptation. Daisy Edgar-Jones, Caitríona Balfe, Fiona Shaw and George MacKay are among the cast.

‘Disclosure Day’

‘Disclosure Day’s Colman Domingo arrived on stage to introduce his director, Steven Spielberg, who is getting a special award from CinemaCon (along with a sizzle reel of past work and a standing ovation from the audience).

His latest, an alien-inflected sci-fi thriller starring Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Domingo.

The iconic filmmaker took the chance to argue for longer release windows, which naturally plays well with this crowd.

He also sat down with Domingo to discuss his own movie-watching history, his father’s belief in life beyond our world, his own thoughts on aliens and his time making this latest effort.

Bob Odenkirk has been proving for a while that he’s more than just a comedian and comic actor; the depth he brought to Saul Goodman across the ‘Breaking Bad’ TV universe was key, but he also showed real action chops in the two ‘Nobody’ movies.

With ‘Normal’, he’s much more back in the latter two films’ wheelhouse, playing someone who has to confront a violent situation. But while ‘Nobody’ and its sequel certainly have some dark laughs, this latest outing raises the comic stakes and ups the deadly inventiveness.

Based on an idea by Odenkirk and Derek Kolstad (better known for the ‘John Wick’ franchise, but also responsible for cranking out scripts for the ‘Nobody’ movies and the ‘Die Hart’ outings), ‘Normal’ certainly leans on comedy to leaven the action madness.

While most of the characters are archetypes (and some are disposable cannon fodder), there’s enough care and attention given to the setup to make you invest in the story once the bullets (and more) start flying.

Ben Wheatley, meanwhile, might be best known in the States for ‘Meg 2: The Trench’ and ‘Free Fire,’ but his UK work is deeply rooted in dark humor, and he’s certainly a good choice for this one, bringing a devilish sense of invention to the chaos.

Odenkirk obviously gets the lion’s share of character work, bringing to life the troubled Ulysses Richardson, interim sheriff who quickly realizes that the quirky small town he’s been hired to protect has some very deep, dark secrets.

But around him, there are plenty of standout characters, including Henry Winkler’s cheerful, sweary Mayor Kibner, Reena Jolly and Brendan Fletcher as a seemingly criminal couple whose ambitions light the fuse on the powder keg that is the town. Also worth watching? Ryan Allen as Deputy Blaine Anderson, who has one eye on the top job in the town’s law enforcement.

Utterly ridiculous but also a lot of fun, ‘Normal’ presents as a crossbreed of ‘Hot Fuzz’ (new lawman confronts a small locale’s dark secrets) and the ‘Final Destination’ franchise (in the sheer invention of some of its deaths).

Don’t go in expecting high art, but it’s a wild ride with plenty to enjoy.

Moviefone recently had a chance to speak with actress Ayelet Zurer about her work on ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, Vanessa’s death, leaving the show, what playing the character has meant to her, Vanessa’s relationship with Wilson, what will happen to him now that she is gone, working with Vincent D’Onofrio and the rest of the cast, the reaction from the fans, and if we might see the actress appear in a flashback in the future.

Moviefone: To begin with, when did you learn of Vanessa’s death and what was it like filming her final scenes?

Ayelet Zurer: I got some calls. I was parking my car, and I got a call from Dario (Scardapane) first and then Vincent. We discussed and they wanted me to know where the season is going and how they’re going to take it. It was brutal at first, but at the same time, I really understood why they needed it to really pull all the guns and make this season explosive, and they succeeded. Then, through the season, we had a lot of emotions because we knew every single scene will be maybe the last scene doing that, and we’ll never have that again. So, it was emotional in some ways, and I think it gave another layer to the whole thing. Then obviously, the last two episodes were brutal. It was fun but I was so emotional.

MF: What has it meant to you personally to be a part of this series and to play this character and what are you going to miss most about playing Vanessa?

AZ: I really love her journey, I have to say. I love the journey from ‘Daredevil’ the Netflix show where she’s just a person who’s meeting this man and falling in love with that extremist and saying to him that she’s intrigued by his brutality. Moving away from it, but then moving back into it, and then committing to it, and them having that deal of loyalty for truth, which keeps them together. Then lending that into season 1 of ‘Born Again’, where she’s the boss, she’s matured into that part, and she is now that seasoned woman who’s running the show. Also, the emotional complication between them because he left and what does that mean, loyalty for truth? Because that’s always been the theme for them. Then into this season where she’s realizing that she might not be enough and nothing will be enough for him, really. Power is never enough. Control is not going to be enough. So, I think something breaks inside of her, but at the same time, she’s staying loyal and very protective of him all the way until coming to where she’s not invited to be, to take aim, and to possibly take the bullet. She’s not taking a bullet, but she’s taking something else and going down. So, I think the arc of it all really plays so well and it’s just such a beautiful character, I think. It’s very poetic in my perspective and I’m happy for completion. It’s completed with a bow on top.

MF: Can you talk about Wilson and Vanessa’s relationship, and now that there is no one to hold him back, what do you think the future of New York City will look like with Fisk as Mayor without Vanessa by his side?

AZ: Brutal. He’s going to explode, for sure. I think the audience will be expecting that to happen. I think in a way, subconsciously, because Vincent is playing big, and is large, and he’s also energetically big, and Vanessa is constrained. Her energy is very centered, and that together was balancing each other. So now, one power without the other to balance it is going to be explosive.

MF: What has it been like working with Vincent D’Onofrio to create their relationship on screen?

AZ: I mean, I love him to death. He is a friend. I think we created a relationship/friendship that is similar in some ways to the relationship of our characters in the sense that we have this loyalty and he’s always very protective of me. No matter what was going on. If there was a need for protection, he was always there. So, I will always remember that when thinking of him. I also think he’s a phenomenal actor. We worked well together. I think our chemistry together was profound and became easier with the years. It was so smooth, the listening and the reaction. It was great. I’m going to miss that.

MF: In addition to Vincent and of course Charlie, you also got to work with new cast members Lili Taylor and Matthew Lillard this season. What was it like for you to have scenes with them?

AZ: It was amazing. Lily is amazing. First, she’s brilliant. She’s funny, she’s smart, and she’s everything you would expect her to be. I think she’s a great casting in that specific role. Of course, Charlie has been doing an amazing job on this show, making it so real, down to earth, and so connected. Both Charlie and Vincent were always on top of the writing as well. They were always contributing, so I think that’s also something that’s really elevated the show in a way. I mean, everything is elevating the show. You have an amazing cast on that show, you really do.

MF: While being very entertaining, the show also deals with some serious subject matter. What has it been like for you to have a chance to explore some of those themes in this series?

AZ: Yes, the themes are interesting. The themes of what is good and what is bad? The mask you wear in life, and when you take off the mask, who are you? Faith, and love, I mean, it’s endless. I think it’s a beautifully poetic show in that sense.

MF: What has your experience been like starring on a Marvel series and were you surprised by the fan’s reaction to the show?

AZ: Wow, the fan reaction is amazing. I’ve never seen something so intensely loyal from the fans. It’s so interesting to see. I’ve never done this thing where you watch people watch the show. It’s kind of mind boggling, but I sort of became addicted to that because I am so intrigued by how they perceive certain things. So, I watch that sometimes and it’s so interesting. To be honest, the fans brought the show back in a way. They did. I mean, I will never forget the massive posters in New York saying, “Bring back ‘Daredevil’.” I think that loyalty is an outcome of a good show that really deals with some intriguing themes regarding humanity. But also knows how to have fun at the same time. It’s like the action is entertaining. It’s beautifully shot. The cinematographers and the directors on that shows are so talented. I’m going to miss this whole thing.

MF: Finally, now that Vanessa is gone, does that mean you will never appear on the show again or is there a chance you could return in a flashback some day?

AZ: I think the fans must ask for that. It comes down to that, really. But you never know.

Acclaimed documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville accomplishes the near impossible by capturing the illusive Lorne Michaels in the new film ‘Lorne’. The documentary, which is very funny, is almost an ‘SNL’ parody of celebrity biopics with pitch perfect narration from alum Chris Parnell and TV Funhouse style animation.

Neville was given unprecedented behind the scenes access to Michaels and ‘Saturday Night Live’ and lifts the curtain to show how the sausage is really made. With interviews from ‘SNL’ alum like Tina Fey, John Mulaney, Kristen Wiig and Mike Myers, the movie explores Michaels’ career, the history of the show, and how ‘SNL’ is really made.

Director Morgan Neville is no stranger to documenting famous people, as his last film, ‘Man on the Run’ was centered on Paul McCartney. But the opening scene of ‘Lorne’ makes one think that Neville has finally met his match in Lorne Michaels. The ‘SNL’ creator seems surprised and annoyed that he even agreed to having a documentary crew follow him around, and virtually disappears once the movie begins.

This forces Neville to pivot quickly and results in a movie that is closer to an ‘SNL’ parody of a documentary, which makes for a very funny movie. Some of the techniques that Neville uses to offset the loss of his subject include focusing on interviews with ‘SNL’ cast and alum instead and incorporating cartoons and narration. Those choices, whether out of desperation or not, transform the film from a standard celebrity documentary to a truly funny and entertaining experience on its own terms.

But despite his best efforts, the film eventually does breakdown Michaels’ defenses and gives an honest and in-depth look behind the curtain at the man that created a comedic industry. In fact, Neville’s access to ‘Saturday Night Live’ was astounding and gives a rare never-before-seen look at exactly how the show is really made with glimpses into the writer’s room, pitch meetings, guest meetings, rehearsals, and finally choosing the sketches for that episode.

In addition to chronicling how the show is made week to week, the film also goes through Michaels’ personal history, the beginnings of his career, how he created the show, ‘SNL’s ups and downs including his exit in 1980, his return in 1985, almost losing the show in the 90s, and the various cast changes, as well as his film career, which includes writing ‘Three Amigos’ and producing ‘Wayne’s World’.

Morgan Neville is the best documentarian working today and has made some of the finest documentaries in recent years including the Oscar winning ‘20 Feet from Stardom’, ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’, and ‘Man on the Run’. But ‘Lorne’ might be his best work yet, cracking the code on one of the most important figures in entertainment history.

While reluctant at first, Lorne Michaels does eventually sit down for several interviews and is surprisingly open, despite his reputation for being guarded. However, his insight into his past and the inner workings of the show are delivered cryptically and in a very Lorne Michaels way. But we do get a rare look at his lakeside hideaway retreat in an undisclosed area of Maine, as well as his rigorous late-night schedule.

You really come to understand that Michaels is a creature of habit, basically living the same schedule for fifty years, even eating at the same handful of New York restaurants and ordering the same meals for decades. People often wonder why ‘SNL’ has such a strange schedule, working late into the night and into the early morning most days. It’s because of Lorne, that’s his schedule, the show just adopted it.

Neville assembles a fantastic group of Lorne’s friends and former ‘SNL’ cast members including Steve Martin, Paul Simon, John Mulaney, Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Seth Meyers, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, and Mike Myers.

John Mulaney had the most insight about Lorne, while Tina Fey acted like she didn’t really know him at all. But the most fascinating exchange was watching an intimate dinner between Michaels and friend Steve Martin.

My one critique is I do wish Neville had interviewed more of the earlier cast members, as there seemed to be a focus on only cast members from the last 25 years. Where was Chevy Chase and Bill Murray? Where was Dana Carvey and Adam Sandler? What about Will Ferrell? But this may just be a result of who was available and not by design.

‘Lorne’ is a brilliant documentary that delivers a rare look at an almost mythic figure in popular culture and gives true insight without damaging the myth. At the same time, for fans of ‘Saturday Night Live’ or comedy in general, the movie is a must see that really dissects how the series became an institution and why it is still going strong after fifty years.

Tom Cruise and Alejandro G. Iñárritu kick off the 2026 portion of the show with their collaboration, ‘Digger’. Cruise heaped praise on his director, with the filmmaker explaining that he got the idea for the new movie nine years ago and started discussing it with the actor seven years ago. The new thriller from David Robert Mitchell (‘It Follows’) is a suburban supernatural story produced by J.J. Abrams.

It features the Platt family, who band together to navigate their new surroundings after a cosmic event transports their suburban neighborhood to someplace unknown. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor lead the cast, but the presentation was mostly an extended trailer.

Next up was DC Studios, with producer and co-CEO Peter Safran on stage to introduce it (director and co-chief James Gunn is a little busy, as production on the ‘Superman’ follow-up ‘Man of Tomorrow’ starts next week.

The first project to cover was ‘Clayface’, about the Batman antagonist, which Safran described as more focused on character than genre. He showed off the first footage from the movie.

While we have to wait until October for ‘Clayface’, the next DC Studios film out of the gate is ‘Supergirl’, starring Milly Alcock as Superman’s wilder cousin. She, director Craig Gillespie and co-star Jason Momoa (playing outer space vigilante Lobo) took the stage to talk up the film –– Momoa on a motorcycle! A new scene from the movie was screened.

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock showed up to tout the witchy sequel, mentioning their shared appreciation for director Susanne Bier and how the production rebuilt the original movie’s house. What can we expect? “Midnight margaritas, jumping off the roof, and also have our past catching up with us,” according to Kidman. “We have our destinies, and the family. I think it’s going to be really, really fun.”

The big finish was, somewhat naturally, the new ‘Dune’, with director Denis Villeneuve taking the stage accompanied by Fremen warriors. Villeneuve said he made the movie “1,000%” for the fans, and the audience was treated to the first seven minutes of the movie.

Accompanied by the likes of Zendaya, Momoa and notorious opera-disliker Timothée Chalamet, Villeneuve showed off a battle scene that promises some suitably epic action.

Moviefone recently had the pleasure of speaking with Lena Headey about her work on ‘Ballistic’, her first reaction to the screenplay, the grief her character is experiencing after the loss of her son, why she blames herself, preparing emotionally for the role, working with actor and director Chad Faust, and having fun destroying a car on screen.

Moviefone: To begin with, can you talk about your first reaction to Chad Faust’s screenplay and why you wanted to be part of this project and play this character?

Lena Headey: Well, I loved his screenplay. I’ve known Chad for a million years, and he’s just a gorgeous human. I loved what he’d written. Initially, I think he’d written it as a father-son story. Then he was like, “I kind of started thinking about a mother.” So, from the jump, I was just fully in.

MF: Can you talk about the grief character is feeling after the loss of her son and was it challenging to bring that intensity to the set every day?

LH: Here’s the thing. I think challenging is a funny word when it comes to acting. That’s why we do it because it’s challenging. It’s delightful. For me, you get a script that’s kind of expositional, that’s challenging because you must find something to drive your interest and drive your emotional investment and curiosity. When you get a script like this, it’s just exciting. You just can’t wait to go to work every day because it’s all there. I just show up, be present, be courageous and vulnerable. That’s the joy but in the most enjoyable way. I think we’re all probably tiny sadists, but there’s nothing better than walking away from a day and feeling like you gave it. You gave it in the best way, and it’s up to somebody to do what they’re going to do with it afterwards. So, sort of feeling exhausted but high is, for me, the driver, and I guess for a lot of actors.

MF: Can you talk about why Nance blames herself for her son’s death?

LH: Obviously, the loss of a child for any parent is the living nightmare, and I think it just hits Nance on every human level. Her deep desire for it not to be anything to do with her, to find someone else to put the blame on, but she’s ultimately carrying it. As we see during the movie, her discovery of the bullet and the ammo, and the fact that she is connected to all of this, unknowingly, unwillingly, is devastating. She is looking for someone to blame until there is nobody. Until the answers are, “This is life. This is what happens. He signed up to all those things.” Which, nobody wants to hear, and ultimately, it’s about war.

MF: What was it like working with Chad Faust as both an actor and director?

LH: He’s a wonderful actor too, which pretty much always makes a great director. He’s wonderful. He’s collaborative and present and doesn’t over direct any moment. He just lets it be. Then, he’s this kind of soft backbone to hold up everything. So, it’s a wonderful pre-experimental safe place to just be.

MF: Was there any one direction that he gave you on set that really helped you with a scene?

LH: No. I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’m a parent, and I also write and direct. So, we were kind of 50/50. I would bounce things off him. I think being a mother is very powerful, especially in something like this. So, all the things were just deeply instinctive. I don’t think we discussed a huge amount. He would just let me go.

MF: Finally, there is a scene in the film where you destroy an expensive sportscar with a crowbar. Was that a fun scene to shoot and did you only have one take to get it right?

LH: It was fun. I think that was half our budget, that car. So, they were like, “Don’t mess it up.” Yes, it was obviously really good fun, and much harder than it looks. Those early ’90s cars were made tougher than today’s cars.

While not exactly the first studio to present at this year’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas (that honor went to a collection of smaller outfits such as StudioCanal and Angel), Sony was the first of the major legacy companies to tout its wears, including a new ‘Insidious’ entry and ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’

Among the other movies to get new looks? Nate Bargatze’s family comedy ‘The Breadwinner’ and a mysterious new movie called Grandgear being developed by ‘Godzilla Minus One’ director Takashi Yamazaki, and produced by J.J. Abrams.

There was also an appearance by Justin Lin, who is about to head off to New Zealand to shoot an adaptation of video game title ‘Helldivers’ starring Jason Momoa, which will be out next year.

Comedian Nate Bargatze kicked off the presentation proper with footage from his comedy movie, which sees a suburban couple switch parenting roles when the wife (played by Mandy Moore), scores a deal on ‘Shark Tank’. Bargatze was naturally funny introducing the film, but also promised to keep selling tickets to keep the exhibitors happy.

The promotional push for the latest Spider-outing has been strangely muted given the success of ‘No Way Home’, and the CinemaCon presentation was much the same –– Tom Holland was there in video form and we got a look at a scene from the film, which the studio is describing as the most emotional and grown up of the franchise so far.

Despite all the delays, anticipation remains high for the third entry in the animated Spidey movie series. Early footage was shown from the movie, which finds Miles Morales desperately trying to protect his family as he’s hunted across the farthest reaches of the multiverse. It looks amazing, but we’ll still have to wait until June next year to see it.

Moviefone: To begin with, Bob, can you talk about your first reaction to writer Derek Kolstad’s pitch for this movie and what were some of the elements you helped add in the development process?

Bob Odenkirk: Well, Derek had written an outline for this story, and I liked it because it was unlike a lot of action films. It had story to it. It had character to it. It was almost like three movies in one. The first film is a mystery suspense with comedy, but it’s kind of like a Lake Wobegone town, if you know that reference from Garrison Keillor’s ‘Prairie Home Companion’. It’s a small town in Minnesota. There are funny characters in there, squabbling and being stupid. Then it turns into this action film and then it has horror elements in it in the later part of the film. So, again, unlike a lot of action stories, it had texture and it had character, and some depth to the characters. That’s just different. I mean, that’s not actually something you see in a lot of action films, outlines, or scripts.

MF: Henry, what was your first reaction to the screenplay and what excited you about playing a character like this?

Henry Winkler: Okay. Bob is a friend; he and Naomi is beautiful wife. We have had pasta together. He called me up, he said, “Henry, I’m doing a movie. Would you be part of it?” I didn’t have to read the script. I just said yes. I went up to Winnipeg. I played the wonderful mayor of the town. He is the interim sheriff. Little does he know there is chaos below the surface. He said, “We’re going to have a confrontation. I’m going to put you in the most comfortable position to have that confrontation. I’m going to put you in a blizzard.” That’s how it goes.

MF: Lena, can you talk about your character’s role in this town and how she feels about the new Sheriff?

Lena Headey: I think Bob just wanted someone who would wear a pair of overalls. I love Moira. She’s kind of a little weird. She’s a little eaten by life and when Bob’s character rolls up, there’s a recognition between the two of them and suspicion. Yet, a kind of emotional deficit where they don’t discuss anything they truly like to discuss. So, they kind of skirt around like two snakes a little bit, figuring out who the other is.

MF: Bob, what is Ulysses’ reaction to meeting Moira and discovering what is really going on in this small town?

BO: She is the smartest character in town. I mean, arguably Henry Winkler’s character is very smart too, but not really. He’s just got it an antenna for things, but Moira sees Ulysses and fully grasps the danger of Ulysses, but just the way he sees the world and the details that he sees. So, they really connect and kind of right away. They’re both people who are, in the case of the character Moira, she’s a bartender, and she talks about, you know, “I spend a lot of time listening to people, and I can pick apart what they’re saying, and I can understand the subtext, essentially.” Ulysses, as you see in the movie ‘Normal’ is also somewhat removed from the world around him and is always observing on a very high level. I think that’d be a good team if they weren’t opposing forces.

MF: Lena, what was it like working with Bob on your scenes?

LH: I was only there for a few days, and I was a little nervous because you’re going onto somebody else’s job and story and character and you’re stepping on for a few days. So, it’s always that thing of like, I hope I bring it. But Bob and Ben were both super collaborative and warm and open.

MF: Bob, what was your experience like working with Lena?

BO: I mean, one of us got a master class in acting and I think it was me. She always brings it, you can be sure of that and nobody else could have played this character, Moira, like Lena did. I mean, the depth and the texture and the smile in her performance, and the smile for the audience. They know the purpose of her character right away, which is to cut open the story and lay it bare for you.

MF: Henry, you mentioned you and Bob are friends and you have some intense scenes together. What was it like for you shooting those scenes with Bob?

HW: As an actor your job is to separate the friendship and the reality of where you are, what’s going on in the world, and bring it right in to telling the story, to take the audience with you so that they have a really good time. So, that was not difficult and then when you are in a scene with him, he is so present that you literally just have a conversation with this guy, the interim sheriff, who is figuring out the real problem under the town’s energy.

MF: Finally, Henry, as a director yourself, what did you learn from working with director Ben Wheatley and watching the way he makes movies?

HW: First, Ben is very easygoing and he’s just this big hulk of a guy. He comes up to you and he goes, “Do you think you should bring that down a little? Do you think your energy might be a little high?” Any actor who thinks they can do it without a third eye, is a liar. You need somebody who’s got the vision, and Bob and Ben knew exactly the story they wanted to tell. My job is not just to play the mayor, but my job is to fulfill their vision.

Ulysses (Bob Odenkirk) comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff after the passing of the original sheriff. A bank robbery in Normal leads Ulysses to find that a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town.
