  • ‘Logan’ Director James Mangold Can’t Wait for You to See His ‘Comic Book Movie for Adults’

Logan” director James Mangold really wanted to make an “adult comic book movie.”

“We have adult Westerns and adult science-fiction movies, but somehow comic book movies — even by their nature and titles — seem like they’re for 12-year-olds,” he recently told Moviefone at a press event for his latest film, which will reportedly be Hugh Jackman’s last time going snkit as Wolverine.

Mangold got want he wanted with “Logan.” As 20th Century Fox, the home of the X-Men films, was finding success with its R-rated “Deadpool,” the studio announced the final chapter of the Wolverine saga would share the same kid-inappropriate tone.
Hugh Jackman reprises the titular role for the film, which has long been teased to adapt parts of the “Old Man Logan” storyline from the comics. “Clearly we drew a lot of inspiration, not only from ‘Old Man Logan,’ but other sources,” Mangold revealed.

The director, who also co-wrote “Logan,” described Mark Millar’s original take as Clint Eastwood in the Western “Unforgiven.”

“I think the idea that I wanted to explore further was the idea of being in kind of twilight, of being over it, of losing faith,” he added. From the moment Mangold started mapping out the plot of “Logan,” the story also became about X-23, the female clone of Wolverine, played here by Dafne Keen.
“The biggest thing that’s inspiring from the comics and the storyline, besides drawing from a sense of place and setting for ‘Old Man Logan,’ was also drawing upon the X-23 comic books and the charting of that character and the launching of the character,” he explained.

Mangold wanted more “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Paper Moon” than the typically sexualized actress playing a younger superhero, which led to a central question: “How do you make an adult, intense movie, but you involve the issues of children coming to terms with the darkness of the adult world?” The filmmaker told Moviefone that he sees a longer shelf-life for X-23 beyond “Logan,” so perhaps there’s room to explore her story further in the future.

    “Logan” hits theaters March 3.

  • Ryan Reynolds Has a Cameo as Deadpool in ‘Logan’ (UPDATE)

    Deadpool and Wolverine, together again?

The Wrap reports that Ryan Reynolds has shot a cameo for the upcoming “Logan” movie.” The scene, which was filmed by “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch, will be featured after the credits, rather than within the main part of the movie.

That should somewhat alleviate fan concerns about putting the two characters in the same movie again. They appeared together in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” a pretty terrible movie that “Deadpool” snarkily tweaked. Still, the characters share a long history in the comics, and Reynolds has previously said he wants to make one more Deadpool/Wolverine movie. But Hugh Jackman announced his intention that “Logan” be his final outing.

“What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh,” Reynolds said. “If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”

It might be a lost cause, and not just because of the first movie’s negative response. The two franchises have very different tones — “Deadpool” is cheeky, where Wolverine movies are dark — and it’s unclear how a team-up movie would fit in the new timeline created in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

“Logan” takes place in 2024, when mutant births have declined for an unknown reason. An older Wolverine cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart), but had left his superhero days behind him when he’s called on to mentor a young mutant girl. The movie opens in theaters March 3.

  • Ryan Reynolds Wants to Make a Deadpool and Wolverine Movie

Screening of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" - ArrivalsHugh Jackman may have shaved off his signature Wolverine mutton chops for the last time, but that hasn’t stopped fellow superhero star Ryan Reynolds from wanting one more onscreen collaboration between Logan and the Merc with a Mouth.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Reynolds — a newly-minted Golden Globe nominee — said he desperately wants to make one more Deadpool-Wolverine movie, even though Jackman has said that the upcoming third standalone Wolverine film, “Logan,” will be his last appearance as the X-Men hero.

“What we’re gonna have to do is convince Hugh,” Reynolds told EW. “If anything, I’m going to need to do what I can to get my internet friends back on board to help rally another cause down the line.”

Those internet friends were mighty helpful in getting “Deadpool” made, so if anyone is up to the task of changing Jackman’s mind, it’s certainly Reynolds’s faithful — and unrelenting — fans. And while Reynolds admits that part of the appeal of reuniting the characters (who first appeared together in 2009’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) is Wolverine’s inherent awesomeness and their onscreen spark, it’s also because Jackman is, according to Reynolds, “one of the best human beings.”

“Part of the reason I want to do a Deadpool/Wolverine movie is not just because I think the two would light the screen on fire, but [because] I genuinely love the guy,” the actor explained to EW.

Keep your fingers crossed, and keep tweeting at Jackman, superhero fans.

  • Stephen Merchant Is the New Caliban in Surprising ‘Logan’ Photos

BAFTA LA's Behind Closed Doors With Stephen MerchantThe third Wolverine movie is going to give us the second Caliban within a single year.

“Logan” director James Mangold and Stephen Merchant both shared photos of Merchant in character, appearing to confirm his role as albino mutant Caliban, who was also in “X-Men: Apocalypse” earlier this year, but played by Tomas Lemarquis.

Check out the new photos of Merchant’s character:

Those of us who still know Stephen Merchant best from comedies like “The Office,” “Hello Ladies,” and “Hot Fuzz” — not to mention his super-dirty “Lip Sync Battle” — were pleasantly surprised to hear of his casting in a Wolverine sequel. But now some fans are even more surprised that the “X-Men” universe is being reshuffled with another recasting.

“Logan” stars Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart (as a much older Professor X) with Boyd Holbrook as villain Donald Pierce. A new image on Instagram suggests Pierce’s storyline will be as leader of the assassins called The Reavers.

“Logan” is scheduled for release March 3, 2017.

  • Here’s Your First Look at the Villain of ‘Logan’

Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine and Patrick Stewart‘s Professor X are much older in “Logan,” but we still pity the fool who tries to mess with them.

Director James Mangold has been sharing photos to tease the third (and final) Wolverine solo movie, and the latest post on the film’s official Instagram showcases our new villain:

    Pierce

That’s Boyd Holbrook as “Pierce,” most likely Marvel villain Donald Pierce.

Here’s some comic book backstory from Collider:

“The character first appeared in the late 80s, modeled after Donald Sutherland with the character’s last name sharing the same last name of Sutherland’s M*A*S*H character Hawkeye Pierce. The Marvel villain was a mutant-hating genocidal maniac who infiltrated the Hellfire Club with the sole intention of murdering all of its members. Oh, and he’s also a cyborg, carrying four artificial limbs that grant him superhuman strength and a great resistance to damage—in fact, as long as his head is intact, he can survive pretty much anything, including a beating from The Wolverine himself.”

In the past week, fans have also been treated to the first “Logan” poster, a script page, and an image of the much older Professor X. Follow @wponx for more teaser shots.

“Logan” will be released in theaters March 3, 2017.

  • Patrick Stewart Looks Old AF in Our First Look at Professor X in ‘Logan’

First, a poster and title for the new Wolverine movie. Now, our first look at a very old Professor X.

Logan” director James Mangold tweeted a camera and make-up test revealing how Patrick Stewart will look in what could be his last appearance as Charles Xavier.

The film is expected to take place years after the events of “The Wolverine,” and center on an aging Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) who struggles with a diminished healing factor. Enter Professor X, who is also clearly succumbing to the effects of aging — but what does senility mean for a psychic mutant.

We can’t wait to find out when “Logan” hits theaters March 3, 2017.

  • ‘Wolverine 3’ Has a New Title, Poster, Release Date, Script Page, Deadpool Joke

Cast members Ryan Reynolds (R) and HughOld Man Logan — or just “Logan” — will return to theaters one last time in March. Hugh Jackman revealed the official title of his third Wolverine film in a billboard photo, and director James Mangold shared the poster on Twitter with the March 3, 2017 release date in clear view.

Mangold also teased a copy of Page 2 of the “Logan” script, for anyone who wants to zoom in close and get some early spoilers. (Warning: There’s an f-bomb right at the top of the script page and more curse words after that.)

Ryan Reynolds, who plays Deadpool in the same universe as Wolverine (and made his own debut in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) continued his bromance with Jackman by quickly tweeting this poster joke:

He wins everything just for that perfect hashtag.

Jackman’s final Wolverine film is rumored to be based on the Old Man Logan comic book storyline, and the script page above adds more weight to the theory. Like “Deadpool,” “Logan” will be rated R. Fox producer Simon Kinberg previously confirmed the story takes place in the future, adding that it’s “a very radical, bold, different Wolverine than you’ve ever seen in any of these movies. […] [I]t’s kind of like a Western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”

  • It’s the End of an Era as Hugh Jackman Shaves His Wolverine Beard for the Last Time

Hugh Jackman has officially finished filming his final outing as the mutant Wolverine, and the actor is marking the occasion by shedding the character’s iconic facial hair for the last time.

Jackman took to Twitter to share the news and wield some shears, posting a video where he gives himself a shave. (Or starts to, anyway; the short clip is only the beginning of what we assume was a fairly lengthy process to cut through his thick beard.) The actor captioned the clip “#GoodbyeChops,” a nod to Wolverine’s signature scruff.

Jackman had plenty more to get rid of this time around, too, since set photos point to the flick (currently untitled) following the comics’ Old Man Logan story line, for which the actor grew a large, bushy beard. Things apparently got pretty dicey with that unwieldy facial hair, too, since Jackman said in both the video and in its caption, “My wife is going to be very happy” that he was finally chopping it all off.

“X-Men” fans may feel differently, though, since this definitively marks the end of an era for both the actor and the franchise. As Jackman prepares to hang up his metal claws, we can’t help but get nostalgic over his humble beginnings with the series, way back in 2000, when the little-known Aussie actor rocketed to superstardom thanks to his scene-stealing performance.

Fans will have some time to prepare themselves to say goodbye: “Wolverine 3” doesn’t hit theaters until March 3, 2017.

  • Bryan Singer Reveals How Quicksilver Steals the Movie (Again) in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

[SPOILER ALERT! If you haven’t seen the movie, stop reading now.]

Another “X-Men” movie, another chance for Quicksilver to steal the show.

Director Bryan Singer returns with his biggest X-Men movie yet, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” and he has brought “Days of Future Past‘s” Quicksilver (Evan Peters) with him. The speedster became an instant fan-favorite last time with his slow-mo running sequence through a Pentagon kitchen near Magneto’s cell. In “Apocalypse,” the action gets next level’d with a daring rescue through the X-Mansion as it is (naturally) blowing up.

At a recent press junket for the film, Singer revealed how he and his production team put this scene together — an all-timer for the franchise.
“It took a month-and-a-half to shoot two mins of film,” Singer said about the intricate shoot. “Evan Peters worked 17 days, doing most of his own wire work.”

An extensive amount of pre-viz also went into the sequence obviously, as it employed “every type of special effects you can imagine — from CGI to explosive algorithms.”

Several practical physical effects were used as well — including ol’ fashioned explosions.

“What we did when we were done shooting in all the physical locations is, we blew them all up,” Singer grinned. “And [we] had Phantom cameras that run at 3000 FPS, fly in blast cases through the sets at 80 MPH — simultaneously with the explosion. So, when you look at the footage, you can actually read pages of a flaming book moving past the screen, and you can just read the words [on it] — and we just put all those elements together and crafted a scene that had to rival the one in the previous movie.”

Blame H.G. Wells for inspiring Singer on how to, visually, bring Quicksilver’s super speed to life.

“It was all born out of a short story I read when I was kid called ‘The Great Accelerator,’ by H.G. Wells, and it’s a story of a person who takes a potion that allows them to move so fast everything else seems like it’s standing still. And I’ve always wanted to put that on film, and the kitchen scene in ‘DOFP’ allowed me that opportunity, and Apocalypse allowed me to take it to the next level.”

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is in theaters now.
