For almost twenty-five years Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine on screen, longer than any other actor has consecutively portrayed a live-action comic book character.

The actor has appeared as the character in six different ‘X-Men‘ movies and three ‘Wolverine‘ movies including the critically acclaimed ‘Logan,’ which was supposed to be his final appearance as the beloved character.

However, Jackman will reprise his signature role one more time opposite his good friend Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine‘, which is the third movie in the ‘Deadpool‘ franchise but the first to take place in the MCU and will open in theaters on July 26th.

In honor of Jackman’s return to the character, Moviefone is counting down every Hugh Jackman appearance as Wolverine, including his cameos and his latest film.

    Let’s begin!

    • Production on ‘Deadpool 3’ was shut down for the strike.
    • The film should be starting up again this month.
    • Ryan Reynolds let slip that the Dogpool character concept will be in the movie.

Like so many movies in production, ‘Deadpool 3’, the third outing for Ryan Reynolds’ “Merc with a Mouth” Wade Wilson was shut down back in July when actors joined the Writers Guild on the picket line to strike for a new deal.

Since then, director Shawn Levy has said that he and his team were halfway through filming when the shutdown hit. Since then, he has been able to come back to work editing what footage was shot and overseeing any effects shots for those sequences.

But with the performers’ union SAG-AFTRA making a tentative deal for a new contract, Levy, Reynolds and the rest can get back to work.

What is the plan for ‘Deadpool 3’ now?

A new report in Variety says that the movie, a big priority for Disney/Marvel, will be gearing up to get back to shooting in the coming days and weeks, with the current aim to have production in the UK up and running before Thanksgiving (which this year falls on November 23rd).

The rush is partly because the holiday period will mean another shutdown for festivities over Christmas and the New Year, and also so that the movie can meet its planned summer 2024 release date.

What’s the story of ‘Deadpool 3’?

The ‘Deadpool’ team have yet to release formal details of the third movie’s plot, but we do know it’ll see Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine meeting up with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson –– and that things will not necessarily go well, since the pair tend to fight when they interact in the comics.

We’re promised plenty of the usual meta madness inherent to Deadpool’s adventures. This time around, expect prods at the X-Men’s (and Wade’s) previous home at 20th Century Fox (before Disney’s purchase of it nabbed them the rights to the characters), and plenty of cameos from other people, including Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Several of the cast from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies are returning for this one, with Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Rob Delaney all aboard, joined by new recruits Emma Corrin and Matthew McFadyen (whose characters are still a mystery, though Corrin is reportedly a villain.)

    Who is Dogpool?

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats in 'Deadpool.'
Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats in ‘Deadpool.’

Reynolds, who is once more allowed to promote the movie since the strike has been called off, hit twitter today to reveal that the comics character known as “Dogpool” will be showing up in the movie (assuming he’s not joking, but it doesn’t seem that way).

For those who might not be up on the sprawling history of Deadpool in the comics, the idea was introduced in a storyline where Deadpool traveled to Earth-103173, a parallel reality in which scientists conducted Weapon X-level experiments on a dog named Wilson, transforming him into Dogpool. The canine hero would become a member of the Deadpool Corps., a team of alternate-reality Deadpools.

Think the likes of Alligator Loki in the Disney+ series named for Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief. Marvel has been using the Multiverse a lot in its current run of movies and TV series, so naturally this is something they could explore with Deadpool.

When will ‘Deadpool 3’ arrive in theaters?

The rapid start looks to be somewhat in vain, though, at least in terms of getting the movie ready for its planned May 3, 2024 opening. According to Variety, the movie is now shifting to July 26th of that year (so still summer at least).

‘Deadpool 3’ is inheriting that July date from ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, which though it was thought to be closer to finished, is now moving to February 14, 2025. We’d assume that is to allow the Marvel team to maintain their hefty MCU chronology.

The changes mean ‘Thunderbolts’, which hadn’t yet kicked off filming when the strikes hit, is shifting from December 2024 to July 25th, 2025. And the troubled ‘Blade’ will now hit screens on November 7th, 2025.

If you liked the 2000s ‘X-Men’ movies but had an issue with the black leather costumes the team wore –– there was even a meta reference about it when Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine complained about them, to which James Marsden’s Cyclops responded, “What would you prefer? Yellow spandex?” –– prepare to be happy.

Getting ahead of more set pictures arriving showing him in it, the ‘Deadpool 3’ team (including star Ryan Reynolds) has posted an image of Reynolds in his newly modified Deadpool suit walking next to Jackman –– who is in the traditional yellow garb and spiky high hair.

It does seem a little incongruous to see Jackman in such comics faithful attire after years of black leather (or civvies), but the thought of the jokes to be had about it truly makes it worthwhile. And it would truly indicate that there’s either some compelling reason for him to wear that suit or confirmation that this is an alt-universe variant of ‘Logan.’

Deadpool 3: What do we know so far?

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'
(L to R) Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios’ ‘Deadpool 3.’ Photo courtesy of Ryan Reynolds YouTube channel.

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds naturally driving development. Animation veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin worked on the early drafts of the script, and more recently, regular ‘Deadpool’ writer duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick came aboard to help Reynolds get it into shooting shape. Because as we know, the screenplays for these movies are usually heavily reliant on the star and others riffing as well as established pages.

The Wolverine announcement came last year, as did word that director Shawn Levy –– who has now worked with Reynolds on ‘Free Guy’ and Netflix action pic ‘The Adam Project’ –– would be taking the reins on the new movie.

Levy has had the cameras rolling for a few weeks now, and of course pictures have begun to appear online. But, as filmmakers such as ‘Shazam’s David F. Sandberg learned, it’s better to get your own, properly lit and composed images is preferable to bad paparazzi pictures.

A lot of people from the first two ‘Deadpool’ movies will be back.

Leslie Uggams is on board to return as Wade Wilson’s roommate Blind Al, alongside Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Stefan Kapicic as Colossus and Rob Delaney (from ‘Deadpool 2’) as Peter.

New to the franchise? ‘The Crown’s Emma Corrin is co-starring in an unknown new role, one that will reportedly cause trouble for our heroes (when they’re not too busy causing trouble for each other) and ‘Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen, while Jennifer Garner was recently confirmed to be reprising the role of Elektra from the ‘Daredevil’ movies.

  • Hugh Jackman Talks About His Return as Wolverine

Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine in director James Mangold's 'Logan.'
Hugh Jackman as James Howlett / Logan / Wolverine in director James Mangold’s ‘Logan.’

Ryan Reynolds, a man who knows something about using social media – or any media – to his advantage, made a big splash last month when he announced that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine for the third ‘Deadpool’ movie.

The movie has been in the works for a while now, with Reynolds developing the script first alongside ‘Bob’s Burgers’ duo Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, and then with regular ‘Deadpool’ scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Shawn Levy, who directed Reynolds in ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Adam Projectis on board to marshal the madness of a third outing for Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, the Merc with a Mouth.

But the idea that Wolverine would be part of that movie is something that Reynolds has been hoping for before any of that happened, as he explains in a new piece about Jackman in Variety. He approached Marvel boss Kevin Feige about Deadpool and more shortly after the Disney-Fox merger that saw Feige’s team reclaim hold of mutant characters such as the X-Men.

“I got Kevin to talk what, if anything, the future holds for Deadpool in that transaction,” Reynolds says. “The subject was coming up in the meeting about if we could find a way to do a Deadpool-Wolverine pairing. It wasn’t possible then. For this to be happening now is pretty damn exciting.”

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'

Though Jackman had been insistent that 2017’s ‘Logan’ represented the last time he’d submit to the grueling training sessions and emotional work that comes with the character, he changed his mind after constant requests from his friend Reynolds and one particular moment.

“I went to a screening of ‘Deadpool.’ I was 20 minutes in, and I was like, ‘Ah, damn it!’” Jackman admits. “All I kept seeing in my head was ‘48 Hrs.’ with Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. So it’s been brewing for a long time. It just took me longer to get here. A little part of me now thinks I’d be better at it. Is that arrogance of age or something? Wolverine’s a tortured character — more tortured than me. But I always get the feeling of him being comfortable in his own skin. And I feel more comfortable in my own skin now, even though it’s messier.”

Reynolds is naturally happy that he’s finally been able to convince Jackman to come back. “Oh my God, I’m thrilled,” Reynolds explains. “It’s like old home week. To get to be on set with one of my closest friends each and every day is a dream come true. But to do it with these two iconic characters side by side, that’s beyond our wildest dreams.”

How the pair will be brought together and what the story of ‘Deadpool 3’ is exactly, is being kept quiet for now. But the movie itself will be out on November 8th, 2024.

  • Reynolds and Jackman Answer ‘Deadpool 3’ Wolverine Questions

Ryan Reynolds knows a thing or two about setting the internet on fire. He and his marketing team have proved time and again that they’ll cannily drop videos to advertise everything from his gin company to his mobile phone company that get people talking.

And when you combine that with the firepower of not only the next ‘Deadpool’ movie, but also an announcement that Hugh Jackman will be returning as Wolverine for the film, you’ve got a blaze worthy of a gasoline explosion in a fireworks factory.

That’s what happened yesterday when Reynolds posted a video to his social media that initially seems to be just an update about ‘Deadpool 3’. “I’ve had to really search my soul on this one,” Reynolds says. “His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning. Every ‘Deadpool’ needs to stand out and stand apart. It’s been an incredible challenge that has forced me to reach down deep inside. And I… I have nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here. And terrifying. But we did have one idea.”

Cue the random appearance of Jackman (who wanders into frame behind Reynolds, munching on an apple). Asked if he wants to play Wolverine again, Jackman casually answers, “yeah, sure Ryan.” Boom.

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman discuss Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'

With a logo and a release date announcement (September 6th, 2024) you have all the makings of a sensation.

Response to the original was, naturally, all over the spectrum, with obvious delight, major concern and the now-typical criticism.

James Mangold, the co-writer/director of ‘Logan’ had his own reaction, hitting twitter with a loop of Jackman’s character in repeated agony. He followed it up to assure fans that he harbored no ill will towards the idea of Wolverine in a ‘Deadpool’ film, insisting he was kidding.

And if we’re honest, the man behind the next ‘Indiana Jones’ movie really doesn’t have anything to worry about… besides, you know, continuing one of the most famous franchises in cinematic history.

There was, of course, some natural concern that the new movie might somehow undercut Wolverine’s heroic death in Mangold’s 2017 film.

So Reynolds and Jackman showed up in a new video today, promising to answer questions fans might have. We got one serious answer, at least…“‘Logan’ takes place in 2029, totally separate thing,” Reynolds says. “Logan died in ‘Logan’. Not touching that.”

As for what happens in ‘Deadpool 3’? Well, you can see for yourself, but suffice to say, when the audio drops out, replaced by Wham’s ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ and the two actors pantomiming what looks like a big fight between the Deadpool and Wolverine (expect those with lip-reading skills to break down what they’re saying, though we predict it’s nonsense).

Finally, they thank Marvel, and Kevin Feige and wrap up with a photo montage of the performers together through the years.

‘Deadpool 3’ is still largely a mystery for now – besides Jackman’s presence, we know that Shawn Levy is directing and that it’ll be out in September 2024. Perhaps Reynolds will be kind enough to share more videos in future – the question is, how many will just be a giant joke?

  • Hugh Jackman Playing Wolverine in ‘Deadpool 3’

Huge news today from Ryan Reynolds. Or perhaps, that should be “Hugh news”.

Because Ryan Reynolds, the man behind the big screen version of Wade Wilson (AKA Deadpool) has taken to social media to announce that his longtime comedy celebrity feud partner (and good friend) Hugh Jackman will return as Logan (AKA Wolverine) for ‘Deadpool 3’.

Tackling fans’ disappointment about the lack of ‘Deadpool’ sequel news at the recent Disney D23 event head on, Reynolds “admitted” why there haven’t been any big announcements recently.

“Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next ‘Deadpool’ film for a good long while now,” Reynolds says sitting on a couch in a house, before a montage of him thinking in different places and outfits (including on the toilet) plays.

“I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special.

Jackman steps into the frame in the background, brushing his teeth.

“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asks. Jackman heads up the stairs, barely seeming to acknowledge Reynolds, before offering, “Yeah, sure, Ryan.”

Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Marvel Studios' 'Deadpool 3.'
Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Marvel Studios’ ‘Deadpool 3.’

Though the video could be taken as Reynolds joking with fans, the presence of the Marvel Studios logo, the piece ending with an apparent release date (September 6th, 2024) and a few other factors are convincing enough to make this feel real.

For one, the likes of Jackman and ‘Deadpool 3’ director Shawn Levy shared the video, both confirming it. For two… Well, there’s really only that one. But it’s a big one.

‘Deadpool 3’ has been in the works for a while now, Reynolds working alongside the likes of ‘Bobs Burgers’ veterans Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin on initial script drafts before regular ‘Deadpool’ writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were brought back into crank out further revisions.

Little else is known about the movie at this point. While Marvel’s Kevin Feige and the Disney studio executives have been quick to stress that Deadpool will be allowed to be Deadpool without his sharper edges filed away, it remains to be seen what a Wade Wilson in the MCU looks and sounds like.

Given Jackman’s presence, can we expect other X-Men characters, be they from his era or new MCU versions? And does this means that poor old Logan will be brought back to life or returned in some sort of multiverse manner, only to die once more.

Either way, you know the jokes are going to come thick and fast.

‘Deadpool 3’, as revealed in the video, will now be with us on September 6th, 2024. Which still feels a very, very long way away.

  • Taron Egerton Would Like to Play Wolverine

Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman in 'Eddie the Eagle.'
(L to R) Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman in ‘Eddie the Eagle.’

Taron Egerton has done a lot in a relatively short career so far. In the last decade, he’s gotten a big break via Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kingsman’ spy caper franchise, played a few real people (including Eddie the Eagle and Elton John), been nominated for several awards and lent his voice to a couple of successful animated movies in the ‘Sing’ movies.

One milestone he hasn’t hit for a young rising star is getting the call from Marvel Studios for a meeting about a potential role. Or has he? According to a new interview with the New York Times, he has. And they talked about him potentially playing Wolverine.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that,” he tells the paper. “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it.”

“Hugh”, of course, is Hugh Jackman, the man who played Logan/Wolverine across different X-Men movies for two decades, finishing up – at least, for now – with 2017’s ‘Logan’, which effectively killed off his character. But as we all know, superheroes rarely stay dead and even with Marvel looking to reboot the mutant characters following its purchase of 20th Century Fox, he could still return.

Patrick Stewart, for example, recently played an alternate Professor Charles Xavier in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. So the door is open to Jackman should he wish to don the claws again. He’s said, though, that he’s effectively done playing the character, especially given the tough training regime it requires.

Taron Egerton in Twentieth Century Fox's 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle.'
Taron Egerton in Twentieth Century Fox’s ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle.’

Still, if Egerton is looking to get Jackman’s blessing to take over the role, at least he has a relatively direct line to the man, since they worked together on ‘Eddie the Eagle’.

We can certainly see Egerton in the role of the long-lived, fast-healing and metal-clawed mutant, as he’s got the dramatic chops to bring the character to life and can get to the physical place.

As of right now, we have to leave this in the rumor zone, since there have been no announcements (not that we’d expect anything official from Marvel until the company is ready to say something). Still, Taron seems excited even by just the potential idea. “Hopefully if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot,” he says.

Marvel’s future plans, of course, are a mystery beyond the current planned films and shows but given the company’s planned presence at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con, we’re expecting to hear more about the plans for the next phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on screens both big and small. Could we see Egerton bound on stage to a rapturous welcome? You never know.

Meanwhile, he’ll be back on our screens via Apple TV+ limited series ‘Blackbird’, debuting this Friday.

From “I’m the Juggernaut, bitch!” to pretty much every other scene is this lackluster sequel, ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ nearly sets a franchise record for packing in so many wrong things into a normal-sized movie.

    9. ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ (2016)

    X-Men: Apocalypse 2016
    Fox

Nevermind that a decade passes between these new prequels and the cast barely ages a day. And ignore all the negative reviews – “X-Men: Apocalypse” is an entertaining disaster epic starring your favorite mutants that achieves some emotionally resonate moments that call back to Bryan Singer’s first film in the series. What doesn’t work is Singer’s seemingly uninspired visual direction and yet another story about proving there’s still good in the really bad Magneto — who ultimately (shocker) turns good just in time (again!) after spending much of the soulless third act floating purposelessly in a swirl of CG. Also, it’s hard not to just feel bad for Oscar Isaac, under gobs of make-up, as the titular villain.

    8. ‘Deadpool 2’ (2018)

    Deadpool 2 2018
    Fox

“Deadpool 2” isn’t a bad movie, per se, but it lacks the surprise and spontaneity that made the first movie so much fun. While undoubtedly entertaining, with MORE of everything — more characters (including Zazie Beatz’s charming performance as Domino), more action set pieces (mostly involving Deadpool facing off against time traveling bad-ass Josh Brolin), and much more blood (it really flirts with an NC-17, which makes the PG-13 cut even more baffling) – without much in the way of dividends. And worst of all, the big emotional moment in the first act is undone by the credits.

    7. ‘X-Men’ (2000)

    X-Men 2000
    Fox

Despite criticisms that the film plays out like an extended trailer for a bigger (potentially better) movie, Bryan Singer’s initial “X-Men” is a confidently-executed introduction to the mutants — filled with powerful Holocaust imagery and strong thematic ideas wrapped around asking: what would life be like if one were a mutant? Answer: More trips on jets that live under a basketball court and lots of fights atop NYC landmarks.

    6. ‘The Wolverine’ (2013)

    The Wolverine 2013
    Fox

Two thirds of this movie capture the brooding, lone wolf thing that fans love in their Wolverine stories — especially this one, which finally brings the character’s Japan arc to the screen. “The Wolverine’s” last third, however, goes off the rails with a weird showdown between Wolverine and a DNA-sucking Silver Samurai (don’t ask). Hugh Jackman gives his best performance to date as our favorite X-Men, finally given something really meaty to play as Logan struggles with the consequences of outliving all those he will or could ever love. And bonus points for that very inventive mid-point fight atop a bullet train.

    5. ‘Deadpool’ (2016)

    Deadpool 2016
    Fox

It’s ironic that the one movie set in the X-Men universe that doesn’t (technically) feature Wolverine has proven to be the most successful and beloved of the bunch. “Deadpool” freed moviegoers from the increasingly convoluted continuity of the main films to deliver a gleefully funny, raunchy and self-aware story of an assassin getting in touch with his inner hero.

    4. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (2014)

X-Men: Days of Future Past 2014
    Fox

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” serves as both a sequel (ish) to “X-Men: First Class” and a ret-con of the original X-Men films, as the laws of physics are literally broken via time travel to bridge the two casts. Bryan Singer’s first X-Men film since 2003 is one of his best; an assured, “Terminator”-inspired adventure that boasts the biggest production values the series has ever seen.

    3. ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2011)

    X-Men: First Class 2011
    Fox

Magneto’s James Bond-inspired Nazi hunt is just one of the many great things about this 1960s-set prequel. It’s basically “Magneto Begins” or maybe “Professor X: Year One,” as we watch the birth of the X-Men — a genesis which finds them struggling to stop World War III by way of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

    2. ‘Logan’ (2017)

    Logan 2017
    Fox

With “Logan” director and co-writer James Mangold set out to deliver a definitive and R-rated comic book movie for adults. One that explores the cost of being an aging superhero full of bone-deep regret. The end result is a violent, and at times, tear-jerking affair that makes it hard to let go of Hugh Jackman’s iconic take on the character.

    1. ‘X2: X-Men United’ (2003)

    X2: X-Men United 2003
    Fox

It’s the “Wrath of Khan” of the X-Men films, as our heroes team up with their enemy to battle an even bigger threat — Col. Stryker, who wants to wipe out mutant-kind. The character-driven storyline and impressive set pieces, including a harrowing dogfight with the X-Jet, make “X2” one of the best comic book films ever.

Taron Egerton Goes on the Record as Interested in Joining MCU

Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Taron Egerton
    20th Century Fox

It’s official: Marvel President Kevin Feige should contact Taron Egerton when he’s looking for the MCU’s Wolverine — or really any other character.

Fans have floated Egerton as a possible replacement now that Hugh Jackman has moved on from the role, and the actor responded on Wednesday to their calls for him to take over. Egerton told Variety that he wasn’t sure if that particular casting was realistic but made it clear he’s interested.

“I love Marvel and I love the movies. … I’d love to be a part of it,” he said. “Whether [Wolverine] is realistic or not, I don’t know.”

While a new Wolverine will eventually be integrated into the MCU, Jackman’s wasn’t. The veteran X-Men actor’s final turn as the mutant was in 2017’s “Logan,” which came before 20th Century Fox became part of Disney. Unfortunately for him, that meant Jackman never got the chance to be in an Avengers film — something Egerton could, in theory, do.

Beyond the idea of getting to be a part of the MCU, there’s a side benefit that excites Egerton: If cast, he would have “the excuse to get in shape,” he says. That was certainly a part of the job for Jackman. The actor was famously jacked as Wolverine, and he told the Los Angeles Times in 2014 that he would “really up the training” and focus eating “a lot stricter” for the X-Men movies.

It remains to be seen where Egerton’s interest will lead, but he has a strong resume to recommend him. He recently starred in the acclaimed Elton John biopic “Rocketman” and has had roles in action flicks like “Robin Hood” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.” And given how big the MCU has gotten, we’d be shocked if there wasn’t a way to work him in.

13 Things You Never Knew About ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine” on its 10th Anniversary

    20th Century Fox

It’s been ten years since Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine got his first solo movie. Few would argue that “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was a high point for the franchise, but without it we never would have gotten future gems like “Logan.” Celebrate this mutant milestone by learning some fun facts about the making of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and the spinoffs that never were.

    1. Liev Schreiber refused to wear a padded muscle suit, instead relying on Jackman’s help to bulk up before filming. Schreiber eventually gained 40 pounds by following Jackman’s exercise regimen and protein-heavy diet.

    2. Director Gavin Hood repeatedly clashed with producers and studio executives over the tone and direction of the film, particularly his desire to portray Wolverine as a military veteran with PTSD.

    20th Century Fox

    3. Kodi Smit-McPhee was originally cast as the young James Howlett, but had to drop out due to his commitment to 2009’s “The Road.” Smit-McPhee would instead make his X-Men debut as Nightcrawler in 2015’s “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

    4. Though it was deleted from the theatrical version, one of the scenes in the Nigeria sequence features a young Storm working as a child slave laborer.

    5. While it draws heavily from Marvel’s X-Men comics, the movie does make some changes to the source material. In the comics, Wolverine isn’t old enough to have fought  in the Civil War, and he and Sabretooth aren’t actually brothers.

    20th Century Fox

    6. Brian Cox expressed interest in reprising his role as Col. Stryker. But due to the expense of the de-aging technology used on Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier, it was decided to cast Danny Huston as a young Stryker instead.

    7. Kevin Durand’s Blob suit was so bulky and hot that a system of tubes had to be installed in order to pump in ice water and keep Durand cool.

    20th Century Fox

    8. While Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool in the first act of the film, he was replaced by stuntman Scott Adkins for most of the the Weapon XI scenes. Reynolds does appear as Weapon XI in a handful of close-up shots.

    9. An unfinished work print cut of the film leaked online a month before its release. Fox estimated the file was downloaded 4.5 million times by the time the finished version hit theaters and blamed the leak for the film’s lackluster box office numbers.

    10. Originally, Fox intended to launch an entire series of “X-Men Origins” prequel movies. These projects were canceled, and portions of the planned “X-Men Origins: Magneto” were instead used for 2011’s “X-Men: First Class.”

    Activision

    11. Activision released a video game adaptation that included significant plot elements not in the movie. For example, one section features Wolverine teaming up with Mystique to destroy the Sentinel program.

    12. Will.i.am eagerly agreed to play John Wraith because of his love for another mutant teleporter, Nightcrawler. In fact, the video game version implies that Wraith is Nightcrawler’s father, though later movies revealed that the villain Azazel is actually his father.

    Warner Bros.

    13. Before the release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Christopher Reeve held the record for the most times the same actor has played a superhero character. Jackman and Patrick Stewart both tied that record thanks to this film, and eventually went on to reprise their roles as Wolverine and Professor X several more times.
