  • New ‘Game of Thrones’ 2016 Spoilers on Winterfell, Jon Snow, Margaery, Sansa

“Game of Thrones” Season 6 is almost done filming, and several new teases and outright spoilers have the fandom buzzing. There are always interesting updates posted at Watchers on the Wall — it is known — but one juicy bit of Winterfell scoop is below, plus a brief tease on Queen Margaery Tyrell from Natalie Dormer, and an intriguing update from Ian McShane on his one-off role.

*Warning: Major spoilers ahead — but no promises on the veracity.*

    GUESS WHO’S COMING TO WINTERFELL?

On November 16, Watchers on the Wall posted about a scene being rehearsed and filmed this week including Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), and Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen). Their source said the characters were interacting in Winterfell’s courtyard “an there’s a great deal of tension.” We can imagine. But it gets even more tense when, they added, “a giant turns up at the gates! The giant tries to force its way in and the people inside have to fight it off.”

They said they didn’t know if it was Wun Wun or another giant, and they weren’t sure which episode it was for. WOTW is very reliable so, even though this sounds pretty wild, we can’t wait to see how it plays out. That Jon Snow is alive we could all guess, and there were previous spoilers about a major battle featuring Jon and the Northern armies. It’s sad to hear of Sansa at Winterfell with Ramsay, since Season 5 ended with Sansa and Theon fleeing the place. But hopefully Ramsay will still get his comeuppance. Littlefinger has a lot to answer for as well, but he didn’t seem to know the truth about Ramsay when he stuck Sansa there and went to King’s Landing. All in all, this is one spoiler to keep in mind when Season 6 starts.
    GUESS WHO’S COMING BACK?

It’s already known that Bran Stark is coming back, and we’re expecting to see Rickon and Osha this year too, plus Yara Greyjoy, and even The Blackfish. But who did you never expect to see again? Ian McShane is joining Season 6, and he told Pop Goes the News it’s just for “a one-off episode.” But apparently he gets a lot done in that episode, giving a hint on his character: “I am responsible for bringing somebody back that you thought you’re never going to see again. I’ll leave it at that.” Jon Snow? But that’s what Melisandre is for! Fans apparently think he’ll instead be a cross between Septon Meribald and the Elder Brother from the book “A Feast for Crows,” with the person coming back possibly being the Hound … or Lady Stoneheart. It would be exciting to see either back on screen. But where’s Gendry? Just curious.

MARGAERY HAS 99 PROBLEMS BUT CERSEI AIN’T ONE

Last but not least, the great Natalie Dormer was recently on “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” to promote the final “Hunger Games” movie, and of course she was asked about “Game of Thrones.” When asked if Margaery would get revenge on Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), Natalie said, “I can’t tell you very much … [but] Cersei is the least of Margaery’s problems. She’s got bigger problems this season.” Bigger problems than Cersei? Interesting. More of the power struggle with The Faith Militant? Family problems? Tommen usurped? Does Ser Pounce get sick?

What are you most looking forward to seeing in Season 6, whenever it arrives?

  • George R.R. Martin Says Tolkien Inspired ‘Game of Thrones’ Ending

67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press RoomFans of the “Game of Thrones.” According to the author, he’s taken lots of inspiration from fellow heavily-initialed author J.R.R. Tolkien, and the last two books in the series, “The Winds of Winter” and “A Dream of Spring,” will reflect that.

But for those thinking that Gollum or a giant glowing eye are going to show up, think again. Instead, Martin revealed that he’s really looking to mimic the tone that Tolkien established in the final book in the “LOTR” series, “Return of the King.” During an alumni event at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism on Wednesday, the author expanded on that thought. Vulture reports:

“I think you need to have some hope,” he said, referencing the manners in which sagas end. “We all yearn for happy endings in a sense. Myself, I’m attracted to the bittersweet ending. People ask me how Game of Thrones is gonna end, and I’m not gonna tell them … but I always say to expect something bittersweet in the end, like [J.R.R. Tolkien]. I think Tolkien did this brilliantly.”

Martin went on to explain that he himself “didn’t understand that” when he read the book as a boy. Now, however, he has a different view, as reported by Vulture:

Tolkien’s use of allegory to reveal life’s grittier truths (the tragedy of post-war Britain in the late ’40s and early ’50s, in the case of Lord of the Rings), even in the face of a well-earned victory is brilliant. You can’t just fulfill a quest and then pretend life is perfect, he said. Life doesn’t work that way.

Those comments reflect similar statements Martin has made about the series’s end in the past, and it’s good to know that his vision hasn’t wavered since then. That also could mean he’s actually a lot closer to releasing those elusive books, the next of which may or may not be coming out sometime next year.

Either way, audiences can expect to see some of this vision play out their television screens soon, since the show is set to overtake the events of the already-published books any time now. May we suggest (with lots of love, of course) that Martin stop talking about “ASOIAF”‘s ending so much and maybe just write it already?

  • Will the ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Premiere Be Delayed?

Winter is coming, and then spring, but how long into the spring will we have to wait for “Game of Thrones” Season 6? At this point, everyone is still very Jon Snow about the premiere date — aka, we know nothing — but yesterday, HBO announced a bunch of spring 2016 start dates, and it led to some troubling speculation about GoT’s return.

Every past season of “Game of Thrones” has launched its 10 episodes in early-or-mid April or the end of March. That may still be the case, but Entertainment Weekly got us all nervous when they surmised that HBO’s newly announced dates for “Vinyl,” “Girls” and “Togetherness” mean GoT will probably return later than we expected.

    Here’s how they put it:

HBO usually airs its original programming for up to two hours on one night a week (Sunday), and Thrones tends to start after the network’s late-winter shows conclude – usually very late March or early April (last year Thrones returned April 6). No premiere date for Thrones has yet been announced. But given that the winter programs have 10 episodes each, Thrones couldn’t return in early April, or even mid-April,even if all three shows ran for 10 weeks straight.

So we’re looking at late April at the very earliest. In theory, the show could return April 17 if it was paired with the winter comedies for two weeks, but only if HBO decided to no longer air Thrones with fellow Emmy favorites Silicon Valley and Veep for the start of its run – something the network has done the past two years. It’s more likely HBO will want its spring drama and comedies in sync, and use its premieres to cross promote each other like usual.”

But slow down! Many fans are still thinking GoT will premiere April 17, 2016. As one put it, “Vinyl will wrap up its first season on April 10 cause it’s two-hour premiere on February 14. So Game of Thrones will premiere on April 17.”

EW wasn’t ready to buy the April 17 argument but — if it’s true — then not only is it not a delay, it’s the same exact premiere date as Season 1!

However, the idea of a “delayed” Season 6 got some fans thinking maybe HBO was waiting for author George R.R. Martin to finish the next book, “The Winds of Winter,” and maybe The Powers That Be want to start the new season after the book comes out. That’s probably wishful thinking — although we wouldn’t say no to Book 6 arriving in 2016 — and it’s most likely that Season 6 will premiere in late April, either April 17 or maybe April 24, which would be later than past seasons but not exactly a huge difference.

Fans are just very impatient to learn the fate of Jon Snow, not to mention Myrcella and others who may or may not be dead or on the way to dead or on the way to being less dead than before. (The whole season could easily turn into a Monty Python sketch.)

Do you have a theory on the GoT premiere date or will you just wait and see if it’s still April or even May or … summer?

  • Quiz: Who Is This Minor ‘Game of Thrones’ Character?

Listen, we all love “Game of Thrones,” but that doesn’t mean we can memorize every name in Westeros. We’re lucky that we can remember the main characters names, let alone those people who pop up every now and then just to wreak havoc.

Think you can name some minor characters from “Game of Thrones?” Well test your knowledge with our quiz.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Marks Return of Characters Missing Since Season 3

*Warning: “Game of Thrones” filming spoilers ahead*

There are actually a few key characters we haven’t seen since “Game of Thrones” Season 3 and it sounds like more than one will show up in 2016’s Season 6. (Before you get your hopes up, there’s been no LS confirmation.) We’ll mention the others below, but first, let’s focus on the one that was just “confirmed” by the great spoiler heroes at Watchers on the Wall.

They quoted a new report from Los Siete Reinos, revealing that The Blackfish, aka Brynden Tully (Clive Russell) — uncle of Catelyn Tully Stark — is returning in Season 6. The Blackfish managed to escape the carnage at the Red Wedding, and he’s apparently picking up the Jaime Lannister Riverrun siege storyline skipped over in the fourth-book-to-TV timeline.

Clive Russell was reportedly seen filming in Corbet, Northern Ireland. In September, Watchers on the Wall had reported that Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Bronn (Jerome Flynn) would be heading to the Riverlands together.

    As WOTW noted:

There were scenes involving an assault filmed, with the Blackfish possibly defending the garrison and shooting flaming arrows. We’ll be seeing Jaime and the Blackfish having an argument, as well. […] The scenes mentioned by Los Siete Reinos so far are in line with the siege and Jaime and Blackfish’s disagreements from the novel. The new twist is Bronn’s presence; the show is apparently continuing the partnership between Bronn and Jaime into season 6.”

They speculated about the possible return of Catelyn’s brother Edmure (Tobias Menzies) who at least survived his own ill-fated Red Wedding. It’s not clear if we’ll see Edmure, though, it’s just a hope/guess.

But here’s something else to think about, in case you were wondering about Rickon Stark (Art Parkinson). We haven’t seen Bran’s bro — or Osha (Natalia Tena) — since Season 3 either, but we are expecting to see them in Season 6.

WOTW recently posted a casting announcement for a new young actor joining the show, and one commenter asked if he was Rickon recast. Here’s a response to that post, “Doubt it. We have some realy good info/rumors that the original actor will return.” Another commenter said actor Art Parkinson was spotted with Natalia Tena in Befast back in August, adding that the original Rickon would return.

We’ve been very curious to see what Rickon and Osha have been up to, and even though the actor has aged a lot, it’s good to hear he’s (probably) keeping the role. And the Blackfish! It’s about time some Tullys returned to kick arse and take names, even if Jaime and Bronn are on the other side. (Any way to adjust the story and have them team up to take down the Boltons? No?)

“Game of Thrones” has no exact Season 6 premiere date yet, but it’s expected around early April 2016.

  • Emilia Clarke Is Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive

FASHION-FRANCE-DIOR-CELEBSIn its annual contest of who’s hottest, Esquire has thrown its allegiance behind House Targaryen, and has declared Emilia Clarke its Sexiest Woman Alive for 2015.

Clarke, the star of HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones,” joins some esteemed company on that list, whose ranks include past winners such as Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson, Rihanna, Mila Kunis, and Penelope Cruz. In an interview with the British bombshell, Esquire describes Clarke as a study in contrasts, which only amp up her sex appeal.

“She manages to bring together a number of opposites, to make them natural: sweetness and toughness, emotionalism with a kind of cold-blooded determination,” the magazine writes of the actress. ” … Half pal, half dominatrix. Half kid sister, half sexy queen. The movie star who plays, in her real life, an anonymous, funny beauty. This is the gorgeous balance of Emilia Clarke.”

Clarke didn’t directly address the honor, though she did tell Esquire, “I’m trying everything I can not to be freaky” — meaning she doesn’t want “the star treatment go to her head,” the magazine explains. Based on her warm, funny interview, we doubt it will, though we do think it’s fair if she gloats a little bit; after all, the Mother of Dragons has earned her new title.

  • Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Reunion Is Too Cute

game of thrones, emilia clarke, jason momoa, khaleesi, khal drogoTheir separation in season one of “Game of Thrones” was pretty tragic, but Emilia Clarke and Jason Momoa were all smiles as they reunited this weekend.

Clarke and Momoa, who once ruled the Dothraki together as Khaleesi and Khal Drogo on the hit HBO fantasy series, were both in France on Saturday for Paris Fashion Week, and met up for a series of adorable photos, proving that their onscreen chemistry wasn’t just an act. Clarke shared a sweet snap of the pair embracing and laughing, though she added to the cuteness by captioning the shot with a reference to one of her character’s famous “GOT” quotes.

“Well I guess the sun rises in the west and sets in the east then huh?” Clarke wrote, a response to the line Daenerys delivered to Drogo before he died: “When the sun rises in the west and sets in the east, then you shall return to me, my sun and stars.” Excuse us while we swoon a bit.

Momoa had plenty of love for Clarke, too, posting a bunch of photos of the actress posing in a giant hat and affectionately calling her “my khaleesi” (well, he misspelled it as “khalessi,” but you get the idea). Check out the seriously cute shots below.

  • Jon Snow Is Dead, You’ll Be ‘Disappointed’ If You Think He’s Alive (Says Maisie)

Nothing ever stays dead on “Game of Thrones,” and that includes the debate about Jon Snow’s status. Did he die at the end of Season 5? Will he be alive in Season 6, which premieres next spring? The Powers That Be have insisted Jon did die and is dead, but then interviews and set sightings and stuff come up that makes it seem like Kit Harington will live to fight another day.

Now one of his co-stars is weighing in — and she didn’t just give a casual comment, she was definitive about the fate of Jon Snow. He’s dead.

Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) called into “The Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show” in the U.K., and mentioned that she’s in the middle of shooting at the moment. Season 6 actually started filming in July, and Maisie said she’s “aware of the other storylines” happening around her as “We’re given the full script at the beginning of the season.” So she knows what happens not only to Arya — who is now blind, leaving Maisie’s own eyes in pain from contact lenses — but to everyone else.

The radio host asked if she finds that, everywhere she goes, people ask if Jon Snow is alive? She answered, “All the time. People are constantly asking me, and the answer is no. I’m very sorry.” But she laughed, so… The host returned to the Jon Snow question several times, at one point saying that Maisie knew the fate of Jon Snow. She said, “Yeah, he’s dead.” He immediately said, “[Jon] is not dead!” and called her a liar. Maisie responded, “I’m not a liar! I’m very sorry. I would know, of all people, after all. I’m the one that has the script.” Later, the host asked her to tap the phone twice if Jon Snow is alive. “I ain’t doing nothing,” she said.

At the end of the talk, the host said he was looking forward to seeing her and Jon Snow back in action in the new season. Maisie laughed and said, “I think you’re going to be a little bit disappointed.”

Hmm. A little bit disappointed? Our theory is that Jon Snow did die, but he won’t stay dead for long. Will we be disappointed or is she just trying to troll us off the scent?

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 6 Will Feature a ‘Vicious,’ ‘Thuggish’ Fight

Winter is coming and, after that, “Game of Thrones” Season 6 will be showing up in the spring. No one battles like GoT and it sounds like at least one doozy of a fight is headed our way in 2016.

Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) recently talked to The Sunday Times and dropped a little hint about a Season 6 scene she had been shooting in Northern Ireland. Here’s a portion of the story, via Gwendoline-Christie.com:

I’ve been fighting for three whole days, three entire days without ceasing or desisting. Really vicious, vicious, up-close, thuggish fighting.” Who with? “I can’t tell you. I could, but I’d have to maim you.” Who won? “Again, it would be the last thing you ever knew.”

Nice. Three days of shooting a vicious, up-close fight. Brienne was just seen killing (we think) Stannis Baratheon. Who is she fighting this time? Well, we don’t know, but some hints were recently revealed via Watchers on the Wall.

*MAJOR FILMING SPOILERS AHEAD. RUN AWAY IF YOU DON’T WANT SPOILERS!*

Still here? Watchers on the Wall has been sharing daily spoiler updates from set, including one on September 10 about a massive battle being filmed in Northern Ireland. They thought it was for Episode 9, traditionally an action-heavy episode. In this case, the battle apparently includes Northern armies, featuring the Umbers, the Boltons, wildlings and — dun dun dun — Jon Snow! Yes, Kit Harington — who recently dropped hints that he was returning — was seen on location, along with Iwan Rheon, who plays Ramsay Snow Bolton.

Now add Gwendoline talking about Brienne being in a fight scene. All together, it has fans wondering if Brienne is part of this massive battle in the north. Maybe Brienne and Jon Snow fight Ramsay together. Who will have the honor of Ned Stark-ing Roose Bolton’s son? If Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy aren’t there to do it … our vote goes to “Fat Walda” Frey Bolton. But Jon will do too. He can send Sansa’s regards.

  • ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Emilia Clarke ‘Can’t Stand’ Gratuitous Sex Scenes

Game of ThronesLooks like we won’t be seeing Khaleesi in bed anytime soon.

“Game of Thrones,” told the Daily Mail that she’s not a fan of explicit sex scenes — the very kind that her show has become known for.

Sex scenes should be more subtle,” she said. “I’m British, so I cringe at that sort of thing anyway — I can’t stand it.”

Clarke has been naked on the show before, most notably at the end of season 1, when Daenerys rises out of the ashes of a funereal fire with three baby dragons clinging to her. But since then, she’s reportedly told producers she doesn’t want to do any more nude scenes.

Certainly, her character is busy with other things (trying to consolidate her rule over slave states, managing those growing dragons), but other storylines on “Game of Thrones” have featured explicit sex scenes in brothels and elsewhere. And it’s become something of a joke for a character to explain something important while engaged in sex (aka “sexposition”).

“I don’t want to have sex thrown in my face and I’ve always thought the suggestion is so much more titillating than the act itself,” Clarke said. “On screen, the subtler the better.”
