  • The 7 Most Depressing TV Shows Ever

    %Slideshow-294924%
Television certainly isn’t canned laughter, positive life lessons, hug-filled very special episodes, and happy, sappy-scored endings all the time. It seems like the small screen has gotten increasingly darker over the years, and the storm clouds don’t appear to be lifting any time soon. Call it a quest for schadenfreude, call it high-brow, or call it art imitating the awful realities of life, but many shows tend to leave us down in the dumps, and we don’t even mind the pain. Need proof? Here are 7 terribly depressing TV shows that make us want to curl into the fetal position and shed tears of hopelessness.

  • New ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Teasers, Details on First Two Episodes

HBO is now entering the heavy promotion stage for “True Detective” Season 2, which stars Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Taylor Kitsch and premieres June 21. The network recently shared two new teasers, even letting some of the high-profile cast occasionally speak instead of just looking menacing or depressed:

HBO also issued materials with more details on what will happen in the first two episodes, which air in June, listing more cast members and guest stars.

    WHAT’S THE SHOW ABOUT?

A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California in “True Detective.”

Colin Farrell plays Ray Velcoro, a troubled detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him. Vince Vaughn portrays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner. Rachel McAdams plays Ani Bezzerides, a sheriff’s detective whose uncompromising ethics put her at odds with others and the system she serves. Taylor Kitsch portrays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and a highway patrol motorcycle officer, running from a difficult past and the sudden glare of a scandal that never happened.

MORE CAST MEMBERS & GUEST STARS

The cast also includes Kelly Reilly (“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”) as Jordan Semyon, Frank’s wife, a former D-list actress who is a full partner in his enterprises and ambitions; Christopher James Baker (“Gotham”) as Blake Churchman; Afemo Omilami (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”) as Police Chief Holloway; Chris Kerson (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”) as Nails; and James Frain (HBO’s “True Blood”) as Lt. Kevin Burris.

Among the guest stars this season are Lolita Davidovich (“Raising Cain”), W. Earl Brown (HBO’s “Deadwood”), David Morse (HBO’s “Treme”) and Rick Springfield (“Hard to Hold”).

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 2: See 4 Posters, Read New Details

Who says summer belongs to the blockbusters? HBO has us pumped to sit at home on June 21 for the premiere of “True Detective” Season 2. The second round is set in Los Angeles and follows three cops (played by Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Rachel McAdam) and a criminal (Vince Vaughn). All four characters are featured from the noses down in these new posters:

Not sure why we’re being denied eye access but, as each image repeats, “WE GET THE WORLD WE DESERVE.” That could be good. That could be bad. Guessing bad, for now. “True Detective” creator and showrunner Nic Pizzolatto did a little Q&A with HBO, and even though we don’t learn many hard facts about Season 2, here are some excerpts:

HBO: Is there a relationship between the story of season two and the story of season one, or any connection between the seasons?
There’s no relationship between the stories or characters, which was the result of fully committing to something new, but I do think that the seasons have a deep, close bond in sensibility and vision, a similar soul, though this is a more complex world and field of characters.

HBO: Earlier last year, you said that this season was about ‘Bad men, hard women and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system.’ Is that still true?
It’s not, I’m afraid. There’s definitely bad men and hard women, but no secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. That was a comment from very early in the process, and something I ended up discarding in favor of closer character work and a more grounded crime story. The complexity of the historical conspiracy first conceived detracted from the characters and their reality, I felt, and those characters are ultimately what have to shape the world and story. So I moved away from that.

HBO: What’s that music on the trailer? Where’d it come from?
That’s one of several original songs developed with T-Bone Burnett, as original music plays a much greater role this season. The reasons for that are probably best explained by seeing the show, but these songs will be revealed in full at a later date.

Watch the teaser again below. The music alone is reason enough to watch this show.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 2 Has a Trailer and a Release Date (VIDEO)

    True Detective season 2
HBO dropped the first trailer for the second season of “True Detective” on Thursday, and also revealed when new episodes of the critically-acclaimed series are set to debut.

The wordless teaser features our first glimpses of Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Kelly Reilly in character, and from the looks of it, everyone is absolutely miserable. Several characters burst into tears throughout the short clip, Farrell — who sports a pretty spectacular mustache — puts on some brass knuckles, and Kitsch appears to be suffering some sort of mental breakdown.

That seems about right for the dark series, which this season features a corrupt police department (led by Farrell, McAdams, and Kitsch) teaming up with a floundering mob boss (Vaughn) to solve a murder. Based on this first clip, that task won’t be easy on anyone — least of all on the involved parties’ psyches.

“True Detective” season two is slated to premiere on June 21 on HBO.
