‘True Detective’ Season 3 References Season 1 Because Time Is a Flat Circle

    HBO

Time really is a flat circle on “True Detective.”

An eagle-eyed fan noticed an Easter egg in HBO’s preview for Season 3, Episode 5, “If You Have Ghosts,” which airs February 3.

In the 2015 timeline, Detective Hays (Mahershala Ali) is getting interviewed by Elisa Montgomery (Sarah Gadon), an investigative filmmaker who is working on a true crime documentary about the Purcell case from 1967.

The promo for Episode 5 (around the 19 second mark) shows the screen of Elisa’s laptop, which displays an article with the headline “Former State Police Officers Stop Alleged Serial Killer” and pictures of Detectives Rust Cohle (played by Mathew McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) — the protagonists from “True Detective” Season 1.

So, the two seasons exist in the same universe! Hays is being interviewed about three years after the modern-day timeline of Season 1 (which took place in 2012).

This isn’t the only Season 1 Easter egg in the new season. In Episode 2, Elisa said, “It’s been theorized that the straw dolls are a sign of pedophile groups, like the crooked spiral.”

The straw dolls are clues found by Hays at the Purcell crime scene. The crooked spiral is a sigil repeated throughout Season 1, notably carved onto victim Dora Lange’s back.

It’s unlikely there’s a deeper connection, and that these Easter eggs just indicate that the two seasons take place in the same universe. But it’s still interesting to speculate about whether Rust or Marty might show up to lend their expertise on finding creepy serial killers.

Time is a flat circle — an inescapable one for Mahershala Ali in the first trailer for HBO’s “True Detective” Season 3.

The Oscar winner stars as Detective Wayne Hayes, who is haunted by a the case of two missing children in the Ozarks in the 1980s. Much like in Season 1, the story will unfold over three separate timelines.

Season 3 boasts a terrific ensemble cast, with Stephen Dorff playing Hayes’ partner, Roland West, and Carmen Ejogo as a schoolteacher connected to the two kids. Scoot McNairy and Mamie Gummer play the kids’ parents.

The trailer indicates the crime drama is returning to its Season 1 form and Ali’s performance looks to rival Matthew McConaughey’s. The show took a bit of a tumble in storytelling quality in Season 2, but the time that creator Nic Pizzolatto took to craft these new episodes seems to have paid off.

“True Detective” Season 3 premieres January 13, 2019 on HBO.

HBO released six pictures from the new season, which stars Oscar winner Mahershala Ali as Wayne Hays, a state police detective in 1980 Arkansas. Stephen Dorff sports an interesting wig as his partner, Roland West. And Carmen Ejogo plays Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher connected to two missing children.

The eight episode season will revolve around a “macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks” and set in three different time periods.

HBO recently announced Season 3 will premiere January 13 at 9 p.m.

‘True Detective’ Season 3 Gets Official Premiere Date on HBO

    HBO

After years of waiting, fans of HBO anthology series “True Detective” now know exactly when the show will be back for its highly-anticipated third season.

The premium cable outlet announced on Thursday that the season three premiere is scheduled for January 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The eight-episode season will center around what’s being described as “a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks,” and will span three different time periods.

Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight“) will play the main character, Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. The supporting cast includes Stephen Dorff (playing Roland West, an Arkansas State Investigator), and Carmen Ejogo (playing Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980).

Season one of the HBO series, created by Nic Pizzolatto, starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and was a huge hit with both viewers and critics alike. But the second season — featuring stars Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn — was decidedly less successful, leading HBO at one point to put plans for a third installment on indefinite hold.

This new version, though, has fans hopeful that “True Detective” can once again return to its first season heights. They’ll only have to wait a few more months to find out for sure.

It’s too soon to know if “True Detective” Season 3 will be more like Season 1 or Season 2. There’s a wide chasm between the two in terms of quality — at least to many HBO viewers — but the network’s first teaser trailer for the new season is off to a good start.

Moonlight” Oscar winner Mahershala Ali leads the new story as a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. The season follows “a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks,” covering three different time periods as the mystery unfolds.

(Side note: The Ozarks are truly having a moment — between this and Netflix’s “Ozark.”)

Here’s HBO’s “teaser trailer,” which suggests a full official trailer is still ahead before the January premiere:

“True Detective” Season 3 co-stars Ray Fisher, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scott McNairy, and Mamie Gummer. Series creator Nic Pizzolatto returned to write the whole series.

So far, we only know it’s arriving in January, which will surely be a welcome distraction from the cold, dark, and (for some of us) snow of winter. It’s possible HBO’s next trailer will be more specific on the start date.

  • HBO’s First ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Clip Is a Brief But Meaningful Reunion

HBO’s First ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 8 Clip Is a Brief But Meaningful Reunion

Game of Thrones Season 8, Sansa
    HBO

Last night, before the “Sharp Objects” finale, HBO shared one of its classic next year teases — this time promoting many originals coming in 2019.

We got our first clip of Meryl Streep in “Big Little Lies” Season 2, the first look at “True Detective” Season 3 (before a full trailer followed), a look at the final season of “Veep,” and a glimpse of “Game of Thrones” Season 8.

A “glimpse” is right, because the only new “Game of Thrones” shot appeared to be around the 1:10 mark of the video below — the brief scene of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) hugging Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) in a new reunion at Winterfell:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouA24T1Tz-Y

That shot was confirmed to be new, and not from any previous reunion from the past two seasons. The rest of the “Game of Thrones” footage was recycled, despite some reports suggesting the Jaime or Gendry clips were new. They just recut and repackaged a lot.

Fans were hoping for a full “Game of Thrones” Season 8 premiere date, or a full trailer. But they made do with what they got — and took the opportunity to analyze the clip into the ground:

    https://twitter.com/lillygraef/status/1034000181878906880

Sansa may be giving Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) the stank eye, but we’re not buying that any kind of rivalry is brewing. Nobody has time for that. They are all (except maybe Cersei) smart enough to realize there are now bigger fish to fry. It’s exciting to think that a Jon/Arya reunion is probably right behind that scene — and an Arya/Gendry reunion. So many reunions for the final season! Our tear ducts may be the first casualty.

Sophie Turner recently told Digital Spy Season 8 shows Sansa as “a real, true leader of Winterell now. And that’s where we first see her – as a very protective, empowered lady in charge. It’s the first time you ever see her like that, and it’s so amazing to see her like that – kind of owning her destiny.”

“Game of Thrones” is meant to premiere in the first half of 2019. Some people assumed that meant April, but they were basing that on rumors that were probably wrong; HuffPost has an interview with visual effects supervisor Joe Bauer that suggests the premiere will more likely be in May/June.

  • Mahershala Ali Confirmed for ‘True Detective’ Season 3 & Fans Have So Many Thoughts

US-OSCARS-PRESSROOMThe “True Detective” is happening, and it will star Oscar winner Mahershala Ali. It’s also true that fans are now dream casting his partner, with some saying his involvement alone makes Season 3 better than Season 2. (But that is a low bar.)

HBO boss Casey Bloys talked up the network’s slate at the Television Critics Association’s press tour yesterday, confirming “True Detective” Season 3 is in the works with the “Moonlight” star. He also promised good things from the story:

“I have read five scripts for a third season. I’m very very impressed and excited about what I’ve read. I don’t want to give away the storyline, but I really think they’re terrific.”

Bloys said the next step is to find directors, then they can start production. Cary Joji Fukunaga directed all of Season 1, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Season 2 — which starred Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams — had multiple directors.

Mahershala Ali posted about his new role:

And fans have been posting their own thoughts:

Now that we know “True Detective” Season 3 is really a go, with Mahershala Ali in the lead, we’ll just have to wait and see what HBO has planned for the supporting cast, plot, directors, shooting schedule, and premiere date. Cross your fingers that this will be the best season yet … or at least better than Season 2.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 3 in Development With ‘Deadwood’s’ David Milch

“True Detective” may get a third season after all.

Entertainment Weekly reports that creator Nic Pizzolatto has written at least the first two episodes of a potential third season of the anthology crime drama, and that “Deadwood” mastermind David Milch is joining the show to work with Pizzolatto.

A third season seemed up in the air, after a disappointing second season was poorly received by critics and viewers. Last summer, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys said the show was “not dead but there’s no take on a third season yet.”

Well, it seems Pizzolatto has a take on it now. Still, HBO hasn’t ordered a third season yet.

Season 1 of “True Detective” bowed to great reviews and buzz, thanks to acclaimed performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. But season 2, which starred Vince Vaughn and Rachel McAdams, fell flat. HBO itself claimed that they rushed Pizzolatto into writing it.

With Milch on board, “True Detective” gets a veteran writer and showrunner. But of course, this probably means those “Deadwood” follow-up movies won’t be made anytime soon.

  • ‘True Detective’ Season 3 Probably Won’t Happen

After the disappointing second season of HBO limited series “True Detective,” the premium cable outlet is unlikely to move forward on season three.

That’s the word from a new story in The Hollywood Reporter, previewing the reign of incoming HBO programming chief Casey Bloys. According to THR, sources from inside the network say that HBO is “more likely” to develop a new series from “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto, rather than order an additional season of “TD.” Bloys, who’s taking over from retiring longtime chief Michael Lombardo, currently holds the fate of the series in his hands, per THR.

While that’s not a definitive cancellation, it certainly seems unlikely that more “True Detective” is on the horizon, based on the tepid reaction to (and critical drubbing of) the series’s second season. But despite the setbacks to the show following its buzzy, lauded first season (featuring an instantly iconic performance from Matthew McConaughey), HBO apparently believes in Pizzolatto’s creative vision, and has signed him to an exclusive development deal. Just what may come of that is unclear at this point, but the showrunner has to be happy that he still has an outlet for his work, if not the long-running success of “True Detective” that many fans and critics expected.

Stay tuned to see what’s next for Pizzolatto and HBO.
