    • Tom Holland has updated fans on the status of the fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film.
    • He says it’ll have to work for the character.
    • No director is attached to make it right now.

Tom Holland became a firm fan favorite when he debuted as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, signaling that Marvel Studios finally, truly had the rights to use one of the comics company’s most famous characters.

Across his own trilogy (‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’) and crossovers such as ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, he more than delivered on the promise of a great take on the web-slinger.

Naturally, there has been plenty of speculation on when –– and even whether –– he might return to the role, given that it has been two years since ‘No Way Home’ heralded audiences returning to theaters in droves after the worst of the pandemic.

And since that movie –– which saw previous movie Spider-actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield return to the iconic role –– left the MCU’s world with no knowledge of who Peter Parker is, there was concern that Holland could be done with the role.

Now, though, during a new Critics Choice Association press conference, Holland has offered an update.

What did Tom Holland say about returning to the world of ‘Spider-Man’?

This is what Holland had to say:

“All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character.”

Is a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ really in development?

Here’s what Marvel boss Kevin Feige said to Entertainment Weekly in February about work on the film to date:

“All I will say is that we have the story. “We have big ideas for that, and our writers are just putting pen to paper now.”

The forward motion on the film was naturally paused when the writers’ strike hit, but it would seem the Marvel team is back at it.

When will a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ movie be in theaters?

That’s the biggest question right now –– even given the fact that Sony releases the Spidey movies, there’s the MCU chronology to consider, and Marvel’s slots are full for the next couple of years given the schedule shake-up after the actors’ strikes.

And even if Spidey trilogy director Jon Watts returns (he’s said he was ready to take a break from superheroes and has been working on ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Skeleton Crew’) and it gets going quickly, it could be at least a couple of years until Spider-Man swings back on our screens.

Thomas Haden Church has “heard rumors” that director Sam Raimi may be directing another ‘Spider-man‘ movie with none other than original Spider-man actor Tobey Maguire.

The actor, who played Flint Marko/The Sandman, has appeared in two Spider-man films – 2007’s ‘Spider-Man 3’ and 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.” When asked which Spider-Man he’d go toe-to-toe with during an interview with Comicbook.com for the Peacock series ‘Twisted Metal,’ Church named Maguire as that was the Spider-man [movie] he started out with and expressed his interest in appearing in a possible ‘Spider-Man 4’ movie.

“There’s always been some kind of…I’ve heard rumors…that Sam Raimi was going to do another [Spider-Man movie] with Tobey [Maguire] and if that happens, I would probably campaign to maybe at least do a cameo,” Church said.

Sam Raimi directed the ‘Spider-man’ trilogy starring Tobey Maguire as the web-slinging superhero. The 2002 film also starred Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin. ‘Spider-man’ earned over $825 million worldwide and became the third highest grossing movie of 2002. Raimi continued to work with Maguire for the next two ‘Spider-man’ movies.

After the ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, Raimi returned to his horror roots with ‘Drag Me To Hell,’ then in 2022, the director teamed up with Marvel for ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. Last year, while speaking with Comicbook.com, the director expressed interest in directing a fourth ‘Spider-Man’ film as well as working with Maguire again.

“I’ve come to realize after making ‘Doctor Strange’ that anything is possible, really anything in the Marvel universe, any team-ups,” Raimi said. “I love Tobey. I love Kirsten Dunst. I think all things are possible. I don’t really have a story or a plan. I don’t know if Marvel would be interested in that right now. I don’t know what their thoughts are about that. I haven’t really pursued that. But it sounds beautiful. Even if it wasn’t a Spider-Man movie, I’d love to work with Tobey again, in a different role.”

Currently, Sony Pictures owns the right to make and distribute the current Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. Disney shares the right, allowing the character to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ fans finally got to see all three iterations of Spider-Man on the same screen. The film opens up the possibility for the trio to meet once again, as well as appear in other Marvel films or a standalone film. Marvel is diving fast into the realm of the multiverse, and we saw a cameo of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man in Sony’s latest hit ‘Spider-man: Across The Spider-Verse,’ which means the probability of seeing Maguire’s Spider-man on-screen again is quite likely.

  • ‘Spider-Man’ Producers Tease Future Live-Action, Animated Movies

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ lands in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.
‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ lands in theaters on June 2nd, 2023.

All eyes are on the Spider-Verse this week thanks to the release of ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ (find our review here), and all the positive buzz around it, but even with a follow-up on the way (‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’, in theaters March 29th next year) the movie’s producers are looking further into the future.

    9GwiTO4NNjuDFLxjoETBm3

Amy Pascal and Avi Arad, who are the general overseers of Sony’s Marvel-affiliated Spider-Verse, talked to Variety about possibilities for other movies.

Among them? A live-action film focused on the Miles Morales character (the focus of the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies, there voiced by Shameik Moore), a ‘Spider-Woman’ animated spin-off and a fourth film (more directly in collaboration with the Marvel team) starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man to follow 2021’s wildly successful ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

What did the Spider-team say about a Miles Morales movie?

Spider-Man/Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) in Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animations’ ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.’

Morales, who first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics in ‘Ultimate Fallout #4’ in 2011, has become a popular figure for fans who enjoy the more diverse characterization.

As the emotional core of the ‘Spider-Verse’ movies, he’s also crossed over into a more mainstream movie audience, and the first entry won an Oscar for Best Animated Film.

“You’ll see all of it. It’s all happening,” Pascal said at the ‘Across the Spider-Verse’ premiere.

Nothing has been officially announced about any potential Miles Morales movie, but if the latest ‘Spider-Verse’ movie is as successful as the first, expect that to kick into high gear in terms of development.

    Is a Spider-Woman movie likely?

Much as with the Morales movie, there’s nothing official about a Spider-Woman film. The title could refer to Gwen Stacey (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld), but the Jessica Drew character, who has also gone by the title, is introduced in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’.

According to Arad, a ‘Spider-Woman’ movie is coming sooner than you think.

“I cannot tell you yet, but it’s coming,” he said at the premiere.

Still, Steinfeld has told Variety that she’s up for much more Gwen time.

Here’s what she had to say,

“This is like my dream job, sign me up over and over again. I got to be comfortable! And it’s a dream to be in a space that feels so comfortable but also creative and free and just exciting to be a part of.”

What about the future of movies starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker?

Sony is naturally looking to keep the Peter Parker Spidey train rolling, especially after the success of ‘No Way Home’. And according to Pascal, the studio is in the process of developing the fourth film, which would likely reunite Holland with co-stars Zendaya and Jacob Batalon and once more see contributions from Kevin Feige’s Marvel team.

“Are we going to make another movie? Of course, we are. We’re in the process, but the writers’ strike, nobody is working during the strike. We’re all being supporters and whenever they get themselves together, we’ll get started.”

  • Trailer for Tom Holland Series ‘The Crowded Room’

    Pxe4ZqsS

While Tom Holland‘s certainly faced high stakes and big drama in his movie career (heck, no one remembers him at the end of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’) and in ‘Uncharted’ he risked life and limb to recover artifacts.

But his small screen work definitely goes down some darker paths –– witness Netflix’s ‘The Devil All the Time’ and Apple’s ‘Cherry’ –– and his next gig with the latter also has some seriously dark overtones. How dark? Try a psychological thriller digging into the faulty recollections of a man accused of a terrible crime.

What’s the story of ‘The Crowded Room’

‘The Crowded Room’ follows Danny Sullivan (Holland), a man who is arrested following his involvement in a shooting in New York City in 1979. The thriller series is then through a series of interviews with curious interrogator Rya Goodwin (Amanda Seyfried), and Danny’s life story unfolds, revealing elements of the mysterious past that shaped him, and the twists and turns that will lead him to a life-altering revelation.

Who is the mysterious man who saved Danny from bullies when he was younger? And how does his daughter Ariana (Sasha Lane) fit into it all? Why can’t Danny remember chunks of his life? Could he be innocent as Rya feels, or is he much more nefarious?

Akiva Goldsman created the 10-episode limited series, adapting Daniel Keyes’ 1981 non-fiction novel, the title of which we won’t reveal here as it nods to the truth of the tale and constitutes a giant spoiler. So don’t go googling if you’re curious because you’ll end up ruining the story for yourself.

White God’ and ‘Pieces of a Woman’s Kornél Mundruczó directed several episodes, including the pilot.

The series also stars Emmy Rossum, Will Chase and Lior Raz along with guest stars Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Thomas Sadoski and Zachary Golinger.

As for Holland, next up, he’s down to star in a Fred Astaire biopic and there’s the prospect of another ‘Spider-Man’ entry, though little is known about that, and it could well end up being impacted by the writers’ strike in any regard. In a much earlier state is World War II drama ‘Beneath a Scarlet Sky’, which will see him playing a man who helps Jews escape to Switzerland.

The first three episodes of ‘The Crowded Room’ will launch on Apple TV+ on June 9th, followed by one new episode weekly through July 28th.

There are occasionally subjects that inspire films in dual development––famous examples have included danger from the skies in 1998’s ‘Deep Impact’ and ‘Armageddon’ and volcanoes via 1997’s ‘Volcano’ and ‘Dante’s Peak’.

Fred Astaire is perhaps not something you might expect to generate the same fever, but the incredibly talented performer is now the subject of two movies making announcements or adding filmmakers.

The first of the two, which had been development at Amazon but is now on the open market, has Jamie Bell and Margaret Qualley aboard to star as Astaire and longtime partner (and dancing equal) Ginger Rogers. Deadline reports that the movie’s rights are up for sale.

(L to R) Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Virginia Dale, and Marjorie Reynolds in 1942’s ‘Holiday Inn.’

Hollywood icons Astaire and Rogers starred in ten movies together, starting with ‘Flying Down to Rio’ in 1933 and ending with ‘The Barkleys of Broadway’ in 1949. The duo revolutionized the musical film genre and dazzled audiences with their inventive flair. This movie focuses on a life-defining point in their early careers when their contrasting dance styles and competitive rivalry threatened to destroy their legendary partnership.

Jonathan Entwistle, who created series ‘The End of the F*cking World’ for Netflix is directing from a script by writer Arash Amel, who most recently worked on ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’ with director Guy Ritchie. The aim is to have this Astaire movie shooting later this year.

And then we come to the second Astaire-focused film, which will star ‘Spider-Man’s Tom Holland.

What is the Tom Holland Fred Astaire movie about?

Holland will play Astaire in a film that focuses on him and his sister, Adele Astaire. The two were inseparable for more than 20 years, moving out of a simple Midwestern vaudeville act in the early part of the 20th Century to Broadway and London’s West end in the 1920s.

Adele Astaire was initially the face of the act but eventually, Fred Astaire’s consummate stage skills eclipsed hers. The duo parted in 1932 when the sister married, which was a blow to Fred, but it also thrust him onto the path of Hollywood dance musicals, and subsequently into cinema immortality.

Paul King has come aboard to direct the movie. He’s the man behind both ‘Paddington’ movies and most recently made ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ prequel ‘Wonka’ starring Timothée Chalamet, which will be in theaters this December.

The connections between the two Astaire movies are deep––Lee Hall has come aboard the Holland-starring film to re-write the script. One of his previous credits? 2000’s dance-centric crowd-pleaser ‘Billy Elliot’, which starred Jamie Bell as a young lad with a love of dance who is mired in his family’s disintegration in a town in the North of England.

That movie was adapted into a successful stage musical, which saw a breakout performance from one Tom Holland. So by association, it’s Billy Elliot that takes the credit for the dueling Astaire films!

  • Donald Glover Starring in ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off

Donald Glover attends the 74th Annual Golden Globe Awards

Donald Glover is finally ready for his Spider close-up.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the ‘Community’ veteran and ‘Atlanta’ creator/star is on board to star in and produce a currently untitled movie featuring obscure ‘Spider-Man’ villain the Hypno-Hustler.

So who is this little-known baddie? Created by Bill Mantlo (who also created Rocket Racoon, who has gone on to be a key part of Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ movies), and artist Frank Springer, Hypno-Hustler was a disco-era character who first appeared in ‘Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man’ No. 24 in 1978. His real name was Antoine Delsoin, the leader of a band called the Mercy Killers and used hypnosis technology in his instruments on his audience in order to rob them.

It doesn’t sound like the source material for the greatest cinematic villain, but in Glover’s hands it should be something fun––he’s not a creative type who sticks to the basics.

The new Spider-Universe movie is at an early stage right now; it doesn’t have an announced title but we do know who hatched the idea to turn the character into a movie: Myles Murphy, the son of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, is on board to write the project.

Glover’s history with ‘Spider-Man’ stretches back at least a decade, though. His ‘Community’ character Troy was seen wearing Spider-Man pajamas in the episode “Anthropology 101”. Fans jumped on the idea that he could be ideal to play Miles Morales in a future Spidey films.

Donald Glover and Tom Holland in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming.'
(L to R) Donald Glover and Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’

Their hopes were not realized––at least, on the live-action front––as Andrew Garfield was cast as Peter Parker in 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’.

Still, Glover did get to play Miles, albeit in voice form, in TV series ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ in 2015.

And while the live-action cinematic Spider-universe stayed Parker-central with 2017’s ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ Glover appeared briefly as a character named Aaron David, who Spidey encountered while the man was trying to by advanced weapons from the Vulture’s crew. A deleted scene from the movie suggested that Aaron was Miles Morales’ uncle (Mahershala Ali voiced the character more officially in ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’).

This is the latest development in Sony’s ever-expanding batch of movies based in the world of the web-slinger, even if most of them won’t feature the (Spider) man himself.

With two ‘Venom’ films and ‘Morbius’ already out in the world, the future for Sony is certainly entangled in a web. Movies on the way include ‘Kraven the Hunter’, due October 6th next year, followed by ‘Madame Web’ on February 16th, 2024. In development, meanwhile, are ‘El Muerto’, a third ‘Venom’ and a slate of TV series set in the same universe.

  • Sony Recreates Spider-Man Meme

Even before ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ came out, one of the worst kept secrets in movies was the fact that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would show up to share the screen with current Spider-Man Tom Holland. (Apologies if you were trying to keep spoiler free on the movie, but we’re afraid it’s well and truly out there).

After months of trying to stop the news from leaking pre-release, Sony and Marvel are taking a very different approach as they announce the movie’s planned home entertainment arrival. How so? The companies tweeted out a picture of Maguire, Garfield and Holland recreating one of the most famous memes to hit the web (pun unapologetically deployed) – Spider-Man pointing at Spider-Man.

Just in case you aren’t familiar with this particular meme, the image originates from Episode 19b of the 1967 ‘Spider-Man’ cartoon, titled ‘Double Identity.’ In the story, the villain Chameleon impersonates Spidey to pull off an art heist. He replicates all of the hero’s abilities in order to force a showdown and to try and trick the authorities into arresting everyone’s favorite web-slinger. Suffice to say, Spider-Man shows up and pointing/fighting ensues. Find the clip below…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRUjV4YC3pA

The meme itself first debuted in 2011 and became increasingly popular as a way to indicate similar things (there’s an example here). It even inspired the end credits scene for ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, in which Spider-Man 2099 (AKA Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara), who meets another Spider-Man and comedy arguments about pointing ensues. You can watch that here…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFQFd5RvNfA

It’s fitting for ‘No Way Home’, which sees Holland’s Peter Parker reeling after his secret identity is revealed to the world by J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons) and he’s framed for the death of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. Seeking a way to solve the problem, he consults Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who suggests a spell to make everyone forget that Peter is Spidey.

Trouble is, Peter’s attempts to make sure his friends and family don’t also lose their memories of his true identity end up causing problems for the spell, tearing open access to the multiverse, and leading to the likes of Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Lizard (Rhys Ifans) and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church), who all appeared in different previous ‘Spider-Man’ movies.

It does, however, also let Holland’s Parker meet and team-up with Garfield and Maguire’s variants of the character, and there is much swapping of stories before they tackle the various villains.

This comes on the heels of word from Holland (while appearing on ‘Late Night with Seth Myers’) that one of the three Spider-Men wore a fake butt in their suit. “I’ll give you a spoiler, and I’m not going to tell you who, but one of us has a fake a– in their suit,” Holland said. “You can figure out that for yourselves.”

‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ will be released on digital March 22, followed by a 4K Ultra HD, DVD and Blu-Ray disc release on April 12. Now we just have to wonder what other memes make it into release announcements. Probably this one.

Opening in theaters on February 18th is the new movie ‘Uncharted,’ which is based on the popular video game of the same name. Directed by Ruben Fleischer (‘Venom’), the film stars Tom Holland (‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’) and Mark Wahlberg (‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’) as treasure hunters Nathan Drake and Victor “Sully” Sullivan, respectively.

In the movie, Drake and Sullivan must race against the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) in order to find the treasure of the Magellan expedition. In addition to Holland, Wahlberg, and Banderas, the movie also stars Sophia Ali (‘Truth or Dare’), Tati Gabrielle (’The Emoji Movie’), and Rudy Pankow (‘The Politician’).

Moviefone recently had the opportunity to speak with actors Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg about their work on ‘Uncharted.’

    AyUtiotC

Below you can read our full interview with Tom Holland, or you can watch the both interviews in the video player above.

Moviefone: To begin with, is it true that you were a huge fan of the game ‘Uncharted’ before you were cast in the movie?

Tom Holland: Yeah, absolutely. I was playing the fourth Uncharted game while shooting ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’ It was a lunch between (Chairman of Sony Pictures) Tom Rothman and I, where the idea of me playing Nathan Drake kind of came about. I think it was probably five years later that we finally went into production. So, it’s kind of crazy to be here today and that something as simple as two mates playing a video game could result in a massive movie that I’m incredibly proud of.

MF: Did your preparation for this movie include going back and playing the video game again?

TH: Yeah. It’s quite a nice thing to be able to say that spending a lazy day on the couch playing video games is technically work. So, I really enjoy that aspect of the prep. (When I was a kid) my mom would be like, “Go outside. You’re never going to make any money playing video games.” And now I’m like, “I’m actually being paid to do this mom.”

MF: Can you talk about how the stunts in ‘Uncharted’ compare to the stunts in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home?’

TH: That’s a great question. I mean, there were obviously a lot of similarities. The ways in which we did certain stunts were very similar, but naturally with these two characters, they’re very different. Spider-Man is a fantastical character who can do things that a human could never dream of doing. Whereas Nathan Drake is a character that is obviously very grounded in reality.

So, rather than thinking about a stunt that will eventually be taken over into a CG world, we need to think about the beginning of the stunt, the middle of the stunt and the end of the stunt. Unfortunately for myself and my two stunt doubles, the end of the stunt usually results in us on our back, on our head, or on our front in some sort of uncomfortable position. So, this film was brutal to make from a physicality point of view. But if you see the film, it really pays off.

In the Spider-Man suit when you’re doing these stunts, you can pull the most grotesque faces because you are going through huge amounts of stress to achieve some of these stunts. With ‘Uncharted,’ obviously I don’t have the luxury of hiding my face. So, I had to sort of retrain myself to look cool and heroic while doing things where I felt incredibly scared. So, it was tough and my stunt doubles would come up to me and be like, “That was great. Just less face. You’re doing too much with your face.” I was like, okay, brilliant. I’ll try my best.

MF: What was your experience like working with Mark Wahlberg?

TH: I mean, it was kind of a dream come true. I’ve been a huge fan of his for a long time and his body of work is so impressive. So, for a young actor to get the opportunity to work with him, it has been a real honor. He’s a good guy and we had a lot of fun working together. The relationship between Nate and Sully was very, very important to get right. I’m really glad it was Mark because the chemistry was something that came very naturally to us.

MF: Finally, Sully is Nate Drake’s mentor in the movie. Did Mark Wahlberg mentor you at all on set?

TH: Yeah, absolutely. He’s a real entrepreneur and he has his fingers in so many different pies. He’s always working and I admire his work ethic. His fitness is something as well. When we were shooting this movie, we came to set for the first day of shooting and I realized how much smaller I was than him because he is massive. Then we shut down because of COVID for five months. So, I went home and did nothing but eat and train, and eat and train, and eat and train. When I came back, he did make a comment about how much size I’d put on, which I was very chuffed about. So, he has inspired me and given me loads of great advice.

  • Movie Review: ‘Uncharted’

Opening in theaters on February 18th is the new action-adventure movie ‘Uncharted,’ which is based on the popular video game of the same name.

In addition to Holland and Wahlberg, the movie also stars Antonio Banderas (‘The Expendables 3‘),  Sophia Ali (‘Truth or Dare’), Tati Gabrielle (’The Emoji Movie’), and Rudy Pankow (‘The Politician’). The result is another mediocre movie adaption of a video game with little to offer except one great action sequence and a charming performance from Tom Holland, but is an otherwise forgettable film.

‘Uncharted’ begins with an origin story for Nathan Drake (Holland) and his brother Sam (Pankow) before jumping forward to present day. Sam has gone missing and Nathan is working as a bar tender and pick-pocket when he is recruited by his brother’s former partner, Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Wahlberg) to look for the hidden treasure of the Magellan Expedition. Hoping to discover what happened to his brother, Drake agrees to help Sullivan, but he doesn’t trust him.

Their rival for the treasure is a wealthy businessman named Santiago Moncada (Banderas), who believes the treasure is his birthright, and mercenary Jo Braddock (Gabrielle). But in order to get to the treasure first, Drake and Sullivan will have to work with fellow fortune hunter Chloe Frazer (Ali), who possesses an important key to finding the hidden gold. Now, trusting no one, they must travel the world looking for clues to the treasure, while Nathan searches for answers to his brother’s disappearance.

I love video games, but let’s be honest, there has never been a great movie adapted from a video game. The list of mediocre movies adapted from video games is long and includes ‘Warcraft,’ ‘Assassin’s Creed,’ ‘Doom,’ ‘Hitman: Agent 47,’ ‘Need for Speed,’ ‘Rampage,’ ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time,’ and ‘Max Payne‘ (which also starred Mark Wahlberg). Unfortunately, you can add ‘Uncharted’ to that list.

But let’s start with what is good about the movie. The film begins with an incredible action sequence featuring Holland falling out of a plane, which is actually just a preview of the full sequence that actually takes place in the third act. The filmmakers were wise to start the movie with part of that action scene, since it is the most stunning sequence in the entire film.

I have to wonder if the screenplay was designed that way, or if the filmmakers realized in post-production that they didn’t have an action sequence in the first 45 minutes of the movie and needed to pull some excitement from the third act. Either way it works but unfortunately, it is the only exciting action sequence in the movie, including the final fight scene.

Tom Holland is fantastic! The young actor known best for playing Spider-Man gives an absolutely charming performance as Nathan Drake. The character is tougher, and rougher around the edges than Peter Parker, but still has Holland’s signature sweetness and charm. The actor also buffed-up for the role and is completely believable in all of his action sequences. Like “Tom Cruise hanging off the side of a plane” believable! He completely out classes and out shines his co-star Mark Wahlberg and gives a very strong leading-man performance. It’s almost heartbreaking that Holland wasted his talent on such an ordinary film.

With a movie as unspectacular as ‘Uncharted,’ you have to look at the person behind the camera, in this case, director Ruben Fleischer. The filmmaker made a fantastic debut with 2009’s ‘Zombieland,’ but followed it up with disappointments like ’30 Minutes or Less’ and ‘Gangster Squad.’ Fleischer had a huge box office success with ‘Venom,’ but we can argue whether that was actually a good movie or not. And you have to wonder why the director was not asked back for ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’ That being said, Ruben Fleischer is a serviceable director at best. So, it should be no surprise that the direction of the movie lacks any real feeling of urgency or cinematic style.

While the movie is loosely based on “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End,” it incorporates elements of the mythos from the entire franchise. However, the screenplay unfolds like an actual video game, with no real plot other than “We have to go to A to get B to go to C.” With so much mythology to choose from, I wish they had incorporated more of that in the film and allowed it to drive the story, rather than having the story driven simply by “We have to achieve this goal to achieve the next.”

Actresses Sophia Ali and Tati Gabrielle are both fine in their roles, but not given enough to be truly memorable. Antonio Banderas’ villain is completely over-the-top and one dimensional, and isn’t given enough screen time to be truly threatening. Mark Wahlberg, who has been attached to this project for over a decade and at one point was going to play Nathan Drake, basically phones in his performance and is over shadowed by Holland in every scene. You never really get a sense of who the character of Victor Sullivan really is, and instead it feels more like Mark Wahlberg is just playing Mark Wahlberg.

In the end, ‘Uncharted’ is a just disappointing movie. The source material offers an extremely rich and intriguing mythology that basically goes to waste with no real character development explored at all. A commanding leading performance from Tom Holland and an exhilarating action sequence is just not enough to make ‘Uncharted’ a movie worth seeing.

‘Uncharted’ receives 2 out of 5 stars.

  • Oscars 2022: Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall to Host

(L to R) Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer to Host the 2022 Academy Awards.
(L to R) Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer to Host the 2022 Academy Awards.

Looking to return to a more normal state of affairs for this year’s Oscar ceremony, 2022 producer Will Packer has decided to return to having a host. Or in this case, three, as Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall will take the job.

Packer, who has produced movies including ‘Girls Trip’ (which starred Hall), ‘Think Like A Man’, ‘Ride Along’ and many more, is the primary producer for this year’s show, and according to Variety, he’d been considering different options for hosts, including rotating between different pairs of presenters each hour of the ceremony. He has, apparently, now decided on just the three.

While even the single-host format isn’t a guarantee of quality, the multiple host idea has been fraught with problems (everyone remembers James Franco and Anne Hathaway), so you must wonder what the current trio will bring to the ceremony.

The actresses, who are not normally known for presenting, do at least have a lot of stand-up experience (Sykes and Schumer), and long, healthy acting resumes (Hall particularly), but the big challenge comes when you must be both funny and keep the show moving at a decent speed (so it doesn’t end up as 17 hours). Hopefully they’ll have the chance to write some of their own material, too.

While there had been some chatter about Tom Holland being asked to host, Variety has heard that Jon Hamm was a recent contender, but dropped out at the weekend. As of right now, the choice is still technically a rumor, but we can expect a formal announcement on Tuesday’s ‘Good Morning America’.

Following 2021’s pandemic-impacted ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station, this year’s event will be back at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood and at full capacity. There has been some controversy over the Academy’s decision to require negative Covid tests over vaccine proof, especially given the Academy itself insists its employees are vaccinated.

And that’s not the only difference this year. The Oscars are going the public vote route in a big way, looking to engage audiences (especially given last year’s lackluster viewing figures). In a move that sounds more American Idol than Academy awards, we’ll all get a chance to vote in a couple of categories outside of the main ballot.

You can vote for your “Favorite Movie” and “Movie Cheer moment” on twitter using the hashtags #OscarsFanFavorite, #OscarsCheerMoment and #Sweepstakes, or at the Academy Website. You’ll be entered into the sweepstakes, which offer a chance to attend next year’s event and win other prizes.

Cue hordes of fans supporting ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ or ‘Malignant’, though we’re not sure we’ll see ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ making a triumphant return to audience hearts.

The 2022 Academy Awards will happen on Sunday, March 27th. Our guide to the Oscar nominees can be found here.
