  • New Spider-Man Movie Titled ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

CinemaCon 2016 - An Evening With Sony Pictures Entertainment: Celebrating The Summer Of 2016 And BeyondHoney, Spider-Man’s home!

Sony unveiled the official title and logo for their upcoming “Spider-Man” film at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The movie, which is co-produced by Marvel in their first-ever collaboration, is titled “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Star Tom Holland made a surprise appearance to make the announcement.

“It really is a homecoming for the character because throughout the story Peter is trying to find his true identity and where he belongs in the world,” Holland said.

The actor also played a clip from “Captain America: Civil War,” which introduces Peter Parker as a high school student in New York City. The clip features Holland, Marisa Tomei (who plays Aunt May), and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Tony offers Peter a research grant, setting up their mentoring relationship, which leads to Spider-Man taking Iron Man’s side in his big face-off against Captain America (Chris Evans).

The title also emphasizes Peter’s youth (maybe he’ll ask Mary Jane to the dance), but also serves as a meta reference to the franchise’s return to Marvel’s creative control.

“Spider-Man: Homecoming” opens in theaters July 7, 2017.

  • ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot Will Feature Other Marvel Characters

Spider-ManThe upcoming reboot of “Spider-Man” will feature other Marvel characters, because … well, duh! If you’re going to include him in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, might as well double down.

As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly, “He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.”

This couldn’t have happened had Sony and Marvel not come to a deal to co-produce the reboot. That led to the introduction of Spider-Man (Tom Holland) in “Captain America: Civil War,” which opens May 6.

The standalone “Spider-Man” movie isn’t due in theaters until July 2017, but we can start speculating now about which characters might show up in the film. An obvious choice would be Iron Man, as Tony Stark serves as a sort of mentor to young Peter Parker. And Holland performed his screen tests with Robert Downey, Jr. But making a deal with Downey for the movie might prove difficult. Same goes with Chris Evans, who plays Captain America (and happens to live in New York City, too, like Spider-Man).

Which Marvel characters do you think could cross over?

  • Zendaya Joins ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot in Mysterious Key Role

FIJI Water At The Weinstein Company's Pre-Oscar DinnerMarvel and Sony’s joint reboot of the “Spider-Man” franchise has cast a mysterious new role, with actress and singer Zendaya joining the ensemble.

Deadline reports that Zendaya will play “a key role” in the new Spidey flick, alongside titular star Tom Holland. Just what that role entails remains to be seen, however, since plot details are being kept heavily under wraps.

According to Deadline, it’s unlikely that the actress will be playing a romantic role (like famous Peter Parker girlfriends Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy); her character’s name is believed to be Michelle. Variety has some additional intel, confirming Deadline’s report that Zendaya won’t be a love interest, and adding that the actress isn’t even considered to be a lead in the flick. Instead, Variety says, “She will, however, play a bigger part in future installments.”

The new “Spider-Man” franchise — the third iteration of the character to hit the big screen since 2002 — is going back to Peter Parker’s high school days, and will apparently have a John Hughes vibe. Zendaya is no stranger to catering to the teenage crowd, having gotten her start on Disney programs “Shake It Up!” and “K.C. Undercover.” The actress has graduated to more adult fare in recent years, including appearances on “Dancing With the Stars” and a guest starring gig on “Black-ish.”

“Spider-Man” is set to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.

  • New ‘Spider-Man’ Writers Confirm No Origin Story, Tease Peter Parker ‘Departure’

The new “Spider-Man” movie, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, is still in the “extremely early” stages. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been announced as the writers, and while talking about their new movie “Vacation,” they teased several details on the upcoming “Spider-Man” movie. They noted that they have a meeting set up at the end of the week to go over logistics and other ideas, so everything is only just starting to be put in motion. But Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently talked about the new movie being like a “soap opera in high school,” comparing it to a John Hughes movie, and the writers shared more on that theme.

As Daley told Grantland (see the video below):

We’re so pumped about it and Marvel seems to be doing everything right. We’re both such huge fans of the stuff that they’ve been putting out. And I think it’ll be a fun departure from the Peter Parker that you’ve seen. Where now he is truly a kid and I think the stakes are increased in that his struggle through high school is very real and isn’t just a sort of side note. It matters now.

Daley knows from high school struggles — you may remember watching him in “Freaks and Geeks.” Grantland noted that what made Spider-Man such a popular comic book character is his life navigating high school is just as difficult as his life as a superhero. They are equal struggles.

    Goldstein added:

That’s what we love about it. We want to explore that. Just because you get superpowers doesn’t make you into a sophisticated, successful adult. He’s still a kid and he’s clumsy and he’s a geek and he’s a bit of an outcast and in many ways the superpowers amplify that and exacerbate his trying to fit in.

He has one more secret and burden beyond all the other crap he deals with as a teen. They also confirmed that this new “Spider-Man” will not be a retelling of the origin story.

    As Goldstein noted:

I think that everybody feels like we know he got hit by a spider and know that Uncle Ben died and we probably don’t need to revisit that.

Sorry, Uncle Ben! But, overall, it sounds like Peter Parker will remain an awkward geek with #nerdprobz, continuing his own education in school even as he battles a new enemy. Watch the full video for more, and stay toward the end for a completely generic tease on the new villain. Spoiler alert: He’ll be a bad guy!

  • Watch Chris Hemsworth Starve With Co-Stars on Set of ‘In the Heart of the Sea’

Chris Hemsworth, aka the Sexiest Man Alive, is following his Thor fame with a couple of comedy roles — “Vacation” and the new “Ghostbusters” reboot — but he’s also making waves in the thriller “In the Heart of the Sea.” The movie is based on the real-life story of the sinking of the whaleship Essex, which inspired the novel “Moby-Dick,” and it’s headed to theaters December 11. Ron Howard directed the movie, which stars Chris, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Holland, aka the new Spider-Man.

Entertainment Tonight got a first look behind the scenes and, in the on-set video, Chris talks about the cast’s 500-calorie-a-day diet to be convincingly starved on screen. Ron Howard mentions that he talked to Tom Hanks about how to lose weight for a film, since the “Cast Away” star has done that a couple of times now.

Here are a few set photos from the director and Tom Holland:

Here’s the official movie synopsis from Warner Bros.:

Oscar winner Ron Howard (“A Beautiful Mind”) directs the action adventure “In the Heart of the Sea,” starring Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker and Cillian Murphy, based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.

In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. “In the Heart of the Sea” reveals the encounter’s harrowing aftermath, as the ship’s surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive. Braving storms, starvation, panic and despair, the men will call into question their deepest beliefs, from the value of their lives to the morality of their trade, as their captain searches for direction on the open sea and his first mate still seeks to bring the great whale down.

“In the Heart of the Sea” stars Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers,” “Rush”) as the vessel’s veteran first mate Owen Chase; Benjamin Walker (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) as its inexperienced Captain, George Pollard; Cillian Murphy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) as second mate Matthew Joy; and Ben Whishaw (“Skyfall”) as novelist Herman Melville, whose inquiries into the event 30 years later helped bring the story to light.

    And here’s the trailer:

  • Marisa Tomei Might Be the New Aunt May in ‘Spider-Man’ Reboot

    2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards - ArrivalsWith a brand-new Spider-Man comes a brand-new Aunt May.

Variety reports that Sony and Marvel are in final negotiations with Oscar winner Marisa Tomei to play aunt to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. The deal is not done, nor are the details confirmed, but should Tomei sign on, she’d star in the first standalone “Spider-Man” movie due in 2017.

Holland will make his first appearance as the web slinger in “Captain America: Civil War,” which hits theaters next May.

Aunt May has always been a key character in Spider-Man lore. She and Uncle Ben are Peter’s guardians, though she becomes his sole parental figure after Ben’s death. In the “Amazing Spider-Man” movies, starring Andrew Garfield, Aunt May was played by Sally Field.

Tomei, who is 50, is the youngest actress to play Aunt May, but Sony and Marvel deliberately chose a much younger actor in Holland as Spider-Man. The rumor mill indicates that the companies, which are collaborating on the project, wanted to write a high school-set storyline for the next movie in the franchise.

  • The New ‘Spider-Man’ Movie Is Inspired by John Hughes, ‘Inside Out’

2013 National Board Of Review Awards - Inside ArrivalsEven though it will be the third iteration of the character, Marvel wants you to know that the newest version of “Spider-Man,” starring Tom Holland, will be like nothing you’ve seen from the MCU before, thanks in large part to its unique influences.

In an interview with Birth.Movies.Death., Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed that the creative team behind the character’s reboot is taking inspiration from an unlikely source: ’80s teen movie icon John Hughes. Speaking to the plethora of supporting characters from the Spidey comics that have yet to make it to the big screen, Feige said that fans can expect more members of Peter Parker’s social circle (and the awkward teenage antics that come with them) to become part of the MCU canon.

“It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting,” Feige told B.M.D. ” … [W]e haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us.”

And it’s not just Hughes who Marvel filmmakers are taken with. Referencing a recent Birth.Movies.Death. editorial about the surprisingly high stakes of current Pixar hit “Inside Out,” which features an 11-year-old girl going through a deep, emotional crisis, Feige said that future iterations of Spider-Man would tap into that same sense of life-or-depth feeling to which only adolescents and teenagers can really relate. As Feige tells B.M.D.:

Stakes don’t need to be end of the world. Oftentimes, in our films, it is, and in our future films Thanos doesn’t work small. But sometimes the stakes can just be ‘Will this little girl grow up to be healthy and well put-together, or are there too many issues for her to overcome?’ That’s HUGE! That overrides a threat to reality itself. And I think Spider-Man straddles that line in a fun way in his comics. What we wanted was a movie where the stakes could be as high as ‘This bad person is going to do this bad thing, and a lot of people could die’ OR ‘You don’t get home in time and your aunt is going to figure this out, and your whole life is going to change.’

Hughes and Pixar leave some big shoes to fill, but if anyone is up to the task of taking on beloved cinema, it’s box office giant Marvel. Here’s hoping Feige and co.’s plans for a more sensitive MCU can meet their own lofty expectations, and live up (and least somewhat) to their inspirations.

  • Tom Holland Is the New Spider-Man

24th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala - Red CarpetMeet your new Spider-Man … Tom Holland!

The 20-year-old British actor has been tapped to play the web slinger in both Marvel and Sony movies. Sony also announced that Jon Watts (“Cop Car”) will direct Holland in a standalone Spider-Man movie.

The young actor is an up-and-comer who most notably starred in “The Impossible” with Naomi Watts. He next appears opposite Chris Hemsworth in Ron Howard’s “In the Heart of the Sea.”

In February, Marvel and Sony made the deal to share the character, and part of that deal was that Andrew Garfield would not return. So, Holland will first appear as Spidey in a Marvel movie, likely “Captain America: Civil War,” which is currently filming. Spider-Man is a key figure in the comic books storyline that pits superheroes against each other.

Then, he’ll star in a standalone film set for July 28, 2017, which will be helmed by Watts, also an up-and-comer who received acclaim when “Cop Car” debuted at Sundance earlier this year.
