‘This Is Us’ Bringing Back Deja Full-Time in Season 3

    NBC

Get ready for lots more Deja: “This Is Us” has promoted actress Lyric Ross to series regular for season three.

Ross joined the NBC tearjerker in season two, playing Deja, the troubled foster child taken in by Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson). Deja and the Pearsons had plenty of ups and downs throughout the season, though the teen seemed to form a close bond with Randall, and also got along well with their two daughters, Annie and Tess.

When we last saw Deja in the season two finale, she had just returned to the Pearsons after her mother waived her parental rights, paving the way for Randall and Beth to formally adopt her. But Deja didn’t exactly handle her mother’s abandonment well, destroying Randall’s car while the rest of the Pearson clan partied at Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) wedding.

Clearly, there’s going to be some immediate fallout from that event, and now fans are also set to see plenty of additional Deja storylines in future episodes. We already know that a decent chunk of season three will focus on the past, and the future will also be explored. It’s comforting to know that our present-day characters won’t be forgotten, either.

Season three of “This Is Us” premieres on NBC on September 25.

The already-sprawling cast of “This Is Us” is growing in season three, with sitcom vet Jane Kaczmarek landing a guest spot on the NBC drama.

Kaczmarek, the Emmy-nominated star of family comedy “Malcolm in the Middle,” is set to appear in an upcoming episode of “This Is Us,” according to Entertainment Weekly. It’s currently unclear how — or during what time period — her character will factor into the show, but EW reports that the role is of “a liberal university professor and scientist who is described as intelligent, warm, and down-to-earth.”

As EW notes, she’s just the latest famous family matriarch from a beloved sitcom to appear on the NBC tearjerker, following Katey Sagal (“Married… With Children,” “Eight Simple Rules”) in season one and Debra Jo Rupp (“That ’70s Show”) in season two. Fingers crossed that they can somehow find a way to include Jo Marie Payton — a.k.a. Harriette Winslow from “Family Matters” — in an upcoming storyline.

Season three of “This Is Us” is set to focus heavily on Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) time in Vietnam, as well as provide some more background on Pearson spouses Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) and Toby (Chris Sullivan). Creator Dan Fogelman has called this third outing the show’s most ambitious season yet, and we can’t wait to see it all unfold.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Casts Michael Angarano as Jack’s Brother

    Michael Angarano
    Showtime

Meet the newest member of the Pearson family.

“This Is Us” has cast actor Michael Angarano as Nicky, sibling to Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia). Angarano currently stars in Showtime’s “I’m Dying Up Here” and previously played the son of Sean Hayes’ Jack on “Will & Grace” (so, yes, he’s going from Jack’s son to Jack’s brother).

As fans are aware, Nicky served with Jack in the Vietnam War and was killed in action. He was seen briefly as a boy in a flashback scene in Season 2 and again in a photo with Jack and fellow servicemen.

Season 3 will delve into Jack’s time in Vietnam. The NBC drama hired  renowned Vietnam journalist and author Tim O’Brien (“The Things They Carried”) as a consultant to help the writers create an accurate portrayal.

Jack’s service will also be tied into current-day storylines, particularly Kevin’s (Justin Hartley), who was seen in a Season 2 finale flashforward traveling to Vietnam with new girlfriend.

“This Is Us’ premieres Tuesday, September 25 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

The Big 3 will have another big day when “This Is Us” returns for its third season this fall.

Co-showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker revealed that the Season 3 premiere will again center on the shared 38th birthday of Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley).

And as the season goes, the NBC family drama will “catch up to all of those [flash-forward scenes from the Season 2 finale] over the course of this year,” Aptaker told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour.

As fans will recall, those flash-forward scenes included Kevin traveling to Vietnam with his new girlfriend/Beth’s cousin, Toby (Chris Sullivan) suffering from depression, and a much older Randall visiting his adult daughter Tess.

And the executive producers teased that they’ll finally reveal some of Toby and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) back stories. Those flashbacks will dovetail with current storylines.

“We’re going to be seeing Toby go through various challenges,” Berger said. “Obviously, we showed last season their journey to have a family. That’s a journey that we’re going to be continuing this year, and there’s going to be the stresses of your first year of marriage.”

Still, the season won’t be all stress and doom and gloom, especially now that the question of how Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) died is out of the way.

“This is a hopeful season,” Berger said, “and a season about true new beginnings for everybody.”

“This Is Us” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. on NBC.

  • ‘Ambitious’ ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Will Feature Flash-Forward Timeline and ‘Some Wallops’

    Ron Batzdorff/NBC

Acclaimed NBC drama “This Is Us” doesn’t shy away from emotional moments or unconventional storytelling techniques, and according to the show’s creator, its upcoming third season will have plenty of both.

While chatting with Entertainment Weekly, Dan Fogelman discussed some of the plotlines that await fans of the series when it returns this fall. But of course, Fogelman couldn’t help but be a bit vague about exactly what will happen. Hey, this show is still part mystery, after all.

One key mystery that will be addressed, however, is whatever was happening with Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and a grown-up Tess in the flash-forward timeline from the season two finale. We already know that Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) doesn’t die, but whatever tragedy does befall the Pearson clan (and the infamous “her”) will come into clearer focus.

The show will jump between that era and the present (and yes, will still include flashbacks to the past), in order to add context to each timeline.

“The question isn’t just who’s estranged, or who’s in prison, or any of the other theories that I’ve heard from people, it’s about where are all the other characters at that point in their lives,” Fogelman explained to EW.

And speaking of that point in their lives: The producer revealed that that future timeline would mark the “ending timeline” of the series, with no flash-forwards occurring after that era. Does that mean that Brown used some of that old age makeup to film some of the final scenes of the series?

Fogelman isn’t talking, though he did leave fans with this appropriately anguished tease about season three:

“There’s humor and love and levity after a very heavy season which I always like when we do. And then… some wallops. It’s our most ambitious season. It’s going to pack a great deal of emotion, and the story lines are going to surprise people.”

We’re both excited and nervous to see what’s in store for the Pearsons.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Filming Has Begun, and The Cast Is So Adorably Happy

    ABC

At last, “This Is Us” Season 3 is filming. Better still, the first day back, July 10, brought some fun photos and video from the cast.

Based on what we’ve seen on social media, the cast and crew were just as excited to get back to filming as fans are to see them do it. Leading up to their new beginning, star Chrissy Metz said it felt like “the night before the first day of school” and shared “gratitude for each one of you who are as excited as we are to share these new chapters together.”

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BlCBWZHgPvS/

And that was only the beginning. There were numerous posts from her co-stars and the crew on July 10. Let’s start with our favorite: a video tweeted by Sterling K. Brown that shows him making the most of Day 1 alongside his onscreen wife, Susan Kelechi Watson.

Brown and Watson doing the Shiggy? Yes, please. When the co-stars weren’t dancing around on set, though, they were hard at work. Both actors were in the first scene, which we know thanks to a photo from “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman.

Brown and his co-stars later had a lot more to say about the day. Clearly, they were happy to be reunited and resume work on the hit NBC drama.

“This Is Us” returns to NBC on Sept. 25 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Star Susan Kelechi Watson Says Beth Doesn’t Die

With all of the drama that unfolded throughout the season two finale of NBC tearjerker “This Is Us,” it might have slipped your mind that a key flash-forward scene seemingly foretold the doom of one cast member. But now, said actress is clearing the air about her character’s fate.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Susan Kelechi Watson — who plays Beth Pearson, Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) wife — chatted about the moment in question, which occurred when an older Randall and his now-grown daughter, Tess (Iantha Richardson), are talking about visiting an unknown woman.

“It’s time to go see her,” Randall says.

    “I’m not ready,” Tess replies.

    “I’m not either,” Randall responds.

Many fans assumed they must have been talking about Beth, and perhaps visiting the grave of the deceased matriarch. But is that really what goes down?

    Not according to Watson.

“I didn’t know that I was going to die,” the actress joked to EW, adding that the possibility “didn’t even cross my mind.” Watson was surprised, then, when fans ran with that theory, and even had to convince her own mother that her onscreen alter ego wasn’t going to kick the bucket.

“Dan [Fogelman, the show’s creator] and I spoke about it — they’re not going to kill Beth,” the actress assured EW. “She’s going to survive. It feels good to know.”

Of course, Watson also told EW that “there’s mystery there,” when it comes to whatever is happening between Randall and Tess in the future. Could they perhaps be visiting a Beth who is very sick in the hospital, or maybe a Beth that is estranged from the family after she and Randall divorce (a scenario that we adamantly implore the “This Is Us” team to immediately strike from their idea list)? Or maybe it’s a grown-up Deja, or Annie?

“Dan would like us to keep it [mysterious], so I’m going to stay away from it!” the actress told EW. “That’s as much as I can say.”

We can’t wait to find out, whenever the show deems it time for viewers to learn more. Season three of “This Is Us” returns to NBC this fall.

  • ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Will Reveal ‘Pain and Suffering’ for Toby

Hit NBC drama “This Is Us” pairs heartwarming and heartbreaking stories in equal measure, and according to the actor who plays Toby, the character will get a steady helping of the latter during the upcoming third season.

In an interview with TV Insider at the NBC upfronts event, Chris Sullivan gave fans some clues about what they can expect from the affable character when new episodes debut. As loyal viewers know, season two ended with a flash-forward featuring Toby lying in bed, suffering from a debilitating bout of depression. The cause of that jarring shift will definitely be explored, Sullivan said.

“I’m looking forward for the audience to see both the light side and the side where he holds his pain and suffering,” the actor told TV Insider. “I think through that, the audience will get a much more grounded view of who he is and why he is the way he is.”

Toby is certainly a polarizing character, with some fans loving his outsized personality and penchant for grand romantic gestures, and others wincing at his try-hard demeanor. But Sullivan’s comments make it clear that there are some underlying reasons for that behavior, and we’re definitely curious to see how the show explains Toby’s journey.

Also on the docket for season three is a deeper exploration of Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) time in Vietnam. Sounds like “This Is Us” isn’t planning on giving fans a break from upsetting storylines anytime soon.

Season three starts shooting this summer. “This Is Us” returns to NBC in the fall.

  • Milo Ventimiglia Says ‘This Is Us’ Season 3 Will Explore Jack’s Time in Vietnam

Hit drama “This Is Us” is known for bouncing around between the past and the present, and its upcoming third season will be no different: According to the actor who plays the dearly departed Jack Pearson, the patriarch’s story is far from over.

In an interview with People, Milo Ventimiglia gave fans a preview of what they can expect from the new season, which starts shooting this summer. As was teased in bits and pieces throughout the recently-wrapped second season of the series, there’s a lot more to the story of Jack’s time serving in the Vietnam War, and now, “This Is Us” is ready to reveal additional information about that mysterious period in the protagonist’s life.

“We’re definitely going to see Jack in the Vietnam era,” Ventimiglia explained to People. “At the end of the Super Bowl episode when people were ultimately confronted with how he passed away, there was a trailer to show Jack in a helicopter over Vietnam in uniform. We’re going to explore that side of Jack’s 20s and what brought him into the man that we all knew.”

Based on the few clues that were sprinkled throughout season two, we know that much of Jack’s experience in Vietnam was tied to his younger brother, Nicky, a character that fans didn’t even know existed (and the rest of the Pearson clan doesn’t know about yet, either). It’s assumed that Nicky didn’t survive, and we’re guessing that Jack’s guilt over that — and what exactly happened — will be a big part of episodes to come.

We already know that Kevin is planning on traveling to Vietnam to find out more about his father’s service, based on the flash-forward that took place at the end of the season two finale. We’re eager to see how the past and present storylines collide.

“This Is Us” begins shooting season three in July. No premiere date is set yet, but it should debut sometime this fall on NBC.
